K-mart is coming

By Cathie Bell K-mart is coming to Blenheim, with Westwood retail centre owner Phil Robinson confirming the company is to rent a new building planned. Linda van Kuyk who runs a social media page calling for the company to open in Blenheim says she and hundreds of others are ‘thrilled’. “OMG, that’s amazing!” she says when The Sun told her the news. Phil says it’s been a long time coming but there is now an agreement for the store to come here. “We’re quite excited about it, for sure.” Continued on page 2 Linda van Kuyk is thrilled K-mart is coming to this site at Westwood in Springlands next year.

Agreement signed to bring K-mart to Westwood Continued from page 1 K-mart is to be the tenant in a new building Phil Robinson has applied to build at Westwood retail centre in Springlands. Phil says his company Outer Limits, which operates the Westwood retail park, filed a resource consent application with the Marlborough District Council last week to build a new large format store at Westwood to house K-mart. While the consent has yet to be granted, Phil expects the store to open at the end of next year. The application says Kmart is a well-known discount department store chain operating in Australia and New Zealand, retailing a wide range of homewares and related goods. “Within New Zealand, Kmart stores are generally located with other large format retail centres, or within shopping malls,” it says.

An artist's impression of the proposed K-mart store at Westwood.

Linda says the agreement for Kmart to come to Blenheim is ‘great news’ for her and the hundreds of other Marlborough people who loved the store. “It’s got nice products… I find what I need there, if I can’t find things at other shops, it’s there at K-mart.” An economic analysis has been done as part of the application which says the opening of K-mart at Westwood would have an impact on the Blenheim central business district,

with an estimated drop in income of negative 1.6 per cent, based on total baseline trade of $310 million, and Springlands would lose 0.3 per cent, based on total trade of $30 million. Department stores are expected to be the most affected, with an estimated loss of between 6.6 per cent and 13 per cent. However, it says impacts will be spread across several stores, and not threaten the viability of any single store.

The net impact on the rest of Marlborough is expected to be positive, being 3.2 per cent based on a total baseline trade of $212 million. Overall, Marlborough is expected to stop ‘leaking’ spending to Nelson and Tasman, as people travel there to go to K-mart now. Phil says there are a lot of anecdotes about people going to Nelson and Tasman just to visit K-mart. “It will be nice to keep some of that here.”

The saltworks at Lake Grassmere is installing a Tesla Powerpack to store energy from its wind turbine.

By Cathie Bell Lake Grassmere salt producer Dominion Salt is about to become the first place in Australasia to install Silicon Valley energy storage for power generated by its wind turbine. Dominion Salt’s Chief Executive Shane Dufaur says the company will soon turn on a 250kW battery storage system, storing up to 570kW hours of energy produced by the company’s wind turbine in a new storage and control system, designed and built by energy solutions company Vector. Using a Tesla Powerpack battery to store excess energy to use another time when needed enables

Dominion Salt to produce 75 per cent of energy used at Lake Grassmere on-site, rather than the national grid. Shane says Dominion Salt has worked closely with Vector to ensure it gets the most out of renewable energy sources and designed a complete system, including battery storage, that allows it to use more renewable energy, and rely less on the national grid. “We’ve been using the wind and sun to make salt for 75 years, and it provides symmetry that we’re using the wind as well, adding to the sustainability of the business.” The Powerpack is a series of ‘beige boxes’, Shane says, with

all the ‘smarts inside’ that manage the interface between the turbine, the grid, and the rest of the plant that allows the company to use the turbine to its best extent. The company is in Marlborough because of the solar and wind energy boosts to produce salt, and it has some ‘pretty lofty goals’ on business sustainability, he says. It’s not just about the environment, the goals have to make commercial sense, and energy consumption is a big part of that. “We at Dominion Salt are part of the world’s oldest industry, but here we are at the leading edge of technology. We’re not just resting on our laurels,” Shane says.

Running for mental health

By Celeste Alexander “Mental unwellness is so common that it’s normal, but not so normal that it’s talked about!” This is the message from Marlborough detective JP Carré who is on a mission to raise awareness of mental health while training to complete the Auckland Marathon later this year. JP has organised a fundraising dinner and auction on September 7 to raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation. His inspiration? His own battles with depression throughout his life and his desire to encourage others to ‘take care of themselves.’ JP has battled depression from a young age including some ‘severe bouts’ and says although he manages it, he knows there are many others in the community who are struggling with their own mental health battles. “As an adult, husband and parent there are constant life stresses in this modern, busy world and when I talk to others it’s evident that many are suffering too, just at different levels. “As a detective I see the psychological effects of abuse, trauma and grief and the profound effect it has on people’s mental health. “My biggest message is to take care of yourself so it won’t lead to something more severe,” he says. The idea to train for and run the Auckland

Marathon came ‘as an accident’. “I did the St Clair in May with a couple of my cousins from Auckland. One mentioned how her husband was doing the Auckland Marathon so I thought yeah... I would too. JP’s sister-in-law suggested he make it a personal journey, so he shared his story and says the response was ‘staggering’. “In the first 24 hours $4000 was raised, then in the next 24 hours a further $1000. This really surprised me but also shows me that mental unwellness does affect people more than we realise,” he says. JP is training with the help of his coaches Paul Newman and Susie Aviss as well as Kate McNabb from Project Vigour. “Also a big thanks to Mitchell Sports for supplying me with two pairs of running shoes and nutritional needs”. The fundraising event, JP’s Road to the Marathon, will be held at the Clubs of Marlborough on September 7 at 6pm. Glenn Kirby will be the MC and guest speaker will be ‘The Resilient Farmer’ Doug Avery. Tickets cost $50 per person which includes a two course buffet dinner, and can be purchased by contacting JP through his online social media page ‘JP’S Road to the Marathon’ or on Local detective JP Carré is raising awareness 021 126 5836. of mental health.

One dead in crash One person has died in a crash by the Wye Bridge on State Highway 63 in the Wairau Valley early on Monday morning, police say. The crash, between a truck and a ute around 1.30am, killed the driver of the ute. The two truck occupants were uninjured, but the truck caught on fire following the crash and needed to be towed from the scene. The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.

Timber burning meeting A public meeting is to be held at the Elim Centre in Burleigh at 7pm on Monday August 14 so Taylor Pass residents can ask questions of the company wanting to set up a new pyrolysis plant near their neighbourhood. Council solid waste manager Alec McNeil says the meeting will be a good opportunity for people living in the area to learn more about the proposal, how pyrolysis works and how the company would manage any effects. Council has identified a site for the pyrolysis plant at its Bluegums Landfill which currently takes the district’s waste timber, and Alec says the Bluegums location offered efficiencies with most of the required infrastructure already there, from weighbridges to drainage and roading. However, the company would have to satisfy all the conditions of the consenting process before it could go ahead.

WWII Spitfire pilot ‘Bunty’ Bunt dies By Bill McElhinney World War Two veteran and popular Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre guide, Laurence “Bunty” Bunt has died. Visitors to the Aviation Centre marvelled at having a World War II Spitfire pilot guiding them through the museum, something he did nearly to the end of his life, Heritage Centre trustee Graham Orphan said yesterday. Bunty, 96, died at Hospice Marlborough. “Few people realise that he was a founding member of the committee that set up the centre,”

Laurence ‘Bunty’ Bunt

Graham says. “He was involved right from 2001 and was in a hurry to see the centre built. Bunty had “turned into a rein-

vented teenager” since the doors to the centre had opened in 2006, Graham says. “He gave so much and got back so much from visitors who hung on to his every word, and of course no one forgot his name!” Bunty was a long-time Picton resident and ran a grocery store there. When war broke out he trained as a fighter pilot in New Zealand and Britain then joined the Royal Air Force when the Battle of Britain was over. He flew Spitfires, Hurricanes and the Boulton Paul Defiant during the remainder of

the war. He flew with the Royal Air Force international squadron at Gibraltar, in North Africa, during the invasion of Italy and at the battle of Monte Cassino, where one of his brothers was in the infantry. He flew a tour of 200 hours and rose to the rank of flying officer. “People say I should write a book,” Bunty said during an interview on his 91st birthday. “Although for years I used to go out to the Woodbourne base and talk to young cadets to share some of my experiences.”

Lions roar into fundraising

7th - 13th August 2017

By Bill McElhinney Blenheim Lions Club members are gearing up for two of their big annual fundraisers, the Book Fair and the Fertiliser Fiesta. With spring on the way, gardeners will be getting ready for another growing season and the Lions are now taking orders for superphosphate, blood and bone, lime, lawn fertiliser and nitrophoska. “Orders close today,” says club projects organiser Owen Batchelor, “but we’ll do our best to fill any orders that come in after that.” In the meantime another club member, Gaynor Cotching, is gathering books, CDs DVDs and puzzles for the Book Fair, a joint project between the Blenheim and Beavertown Lions Clubs. The Fair will be held from August 18-20, 9am to 4pm each day, at the former Courier Post building in Kinross Street. Last year the event raised around $13,000 while the Fertiliser Fiesta added about $3000 to the club coffers. “We run about 27 projects a year,” Owen says, “and the money raised all goes to local causes.” Lions club members can be seen at major events such as the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival, where they act as parking marshals, and delivering firewood around town, another popular fundraiser. Owen says that while most of the wood is sold, some is also given away to needy families who have been referred to Lions by

By Celeste Alexander Mark the date August 25 on the calendar and clear your plans, because there will a unique concert being held where young and old come together to celebrate music from the 70s and 80s. Tempo (Today’s Emerging Musicians Performing Onstage) has invited guest artists The Blenheim Orphans Club to perform during the retro concert. This is not the first time that they have performed with Tempo, and certainly not their first time attending, member Ken Ham says. “We have had a long and happy relationship with Tempo and have performed before in the past and a large percentage of our membership also attends their concerts. “We are very supportive of the kids and the organising committee as they are bringing

all this young potential talent to the stage. It’s a privilege to be asked to perform there again and hopefully if our age and experience gives some inspiration to them it will be an achievement in itself,” he says. The theme of the concert is music from the 70s and 80s so the Blenheim Orphans Club will perform a few numbers such as the Bee Gees and Tom Jones as part of their 20 minute set. “We usually perform songs from the 50s and 60s, but that just reflects our ages,” Ken laughs. “The songs we choose will be classic stuff that everyone knows and will hopefully enjoy and sing along to.” The concert will be held at the Wesley Centre from 7pm. Entry costs $3 per person or $10 per family.

Q: Do you feel supported breastfeeding in public?

Emma Tempest Blenheim

Janelle Fallow Blenheim

Rebecca Toms Blenheim

Melanie Old Blenheim

This is my third baby and I’ve never had issues feeding in public. I’m always discreet anyway.

Good support. I’ve just returned to work in early childhood education and I am supported to continue exclusively breastfeeding.

Usually good, however in Nelson recently I fed at a park and had no issues, but then went to a mall and fed at the foodcourt and got a lot of stares.

I have had nothing but support. In fact people have come up and told me I’m doing a wonderful job and cafe owners have been great.

After three kids I’ve had good support and no problems with feeding in public.

Dear Ed, Unbelievable! Of course the district nurses are incredibly disappointed that they are being moved from their purpose-built premises at Wairau Hospital to the Health Hub in the town centre. At Wairau they have all that is available and necessary to run their department as smoothly and as successfully as it has always been run. It is interesting that the Marlborough District Council needs this building tenanted and councillor Gerald Hope, as well as being on the council, is also a hospital board member. Further flow-on could be that more permanent car parks will be needed around the hub, so more cars will need to park in the council’s car park building – another white elephant. All this, and little thought for the patients, their carers and our amazing district nurses who will no longer be part of the hospital, the place they chose to train and work in. We are talking about care of sick people, people who are incapacitated, people who are hurting, in pain, minus a leg, a breast, a bowel, some who are even dying! A hospital atmosphere is one of care, expertise and love. To go there is a comfort for the sick and to be visited by a nurse from the hospital is also a comfort. Will patients feel the same when they are visited by a nurse from the hub in Queen Street? Also Gutted Blenheim

Missing craft beer Dear Ed, When our family moved to Redwoodtown a couple of years ago, we visited the local Redwood Tavern and Old Bank Tavern to meet some of the local community and make some new friends, which I’m glad to say we did . As for myself, I enjoy the odd craft beer on tap , so the closing of the Old Bank last September which kept a fine selection of craft beers on tap came as a bit of a shock, not only for myself but for most of the

regulars who used the Old Bank for their daily tipple. Me and my family use the Redwood Tavern more now, and enjoy spending time with our friends for a drink and good food , but its always nice to have a choice and I do miss a good craft beer on tap occasionally, so I’m hoping a craft beer bar may soon return to this part of Blenheim for all those craft beer lovers, I’m sure it would be a great success. Cook celebration planned for 2020 progressing By Bill McElhinney Celebrations to mark the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook sailing into Ship Cove in the Marlborough Sounds are progressing, the Marlborough District Council has been told. John Hellstrom, co-chairman of the Totaranui 250 Trust, gave the council planning, finance and community committee an update on the trust’s plans last week. The council is contributing up to $300,000 to help the Trust plan and organise events in Marlborough. John lives in Endeavour Inlet and has a deep interest in the history of the outer Sounds and restoration of sites associated with Cook’s voyages. The trust has been set up to com-

memorate the 250th anniversary of Cook’s landing and Marlborough’s dual Maori and European history. The first significant long-term contact between Maori and Pakeha took place in Totaranui/Queen Charlotte Sound in the 1770s. Cook’s ship Endeavour first sailed into Ship Cove on January 15, 1770. Cook spent more than 100 days at Ship Cove on five separate occasions. Part of the commemorations involves bringing the replica of the Endeavour from Australia to New Zealand. A fleet of double-hulled seagoing waka will also be sailed to the Sounds. “It would be great to have a fleet of waka lined up off Cloudy Bay to greet the Endeavour when she sails in,” trust

Blenheim Lions Club members Helen Williams, left, Linda Batchelor, Karen McWha and Raewyn Thomas called at Wairau Hospital maternity unit last week to present midwife Jodie Rofe, centre, with the items they have made for premature and stillborn babies.

Six Lions Club of Blenheim members meet to knit and sew garments and quilts to give to the parents of these children. “The idea came about when we saw a small quilt being created at the Quilters Barn in Rapaura Road,” club member Helen Williams says. “When we found out what it was for, we saw a need and decided to do something about it.”

The women meet regularly to knit and sew, and last Friday presented the first batch of their work to staff at the maternity ward at Wairau Hospital. The clothing and quilts will be passed on to parents who may need them and midwife Jodie Rofe said they were grateful for the gifts. Some of the materials used are donated, but the club members provide the rest, club member Karen McWha says. “We get together to knit and sew, but it’s also a nice social time for us.”

She has a client with a string of convictions. “Most of them had come about because of his bouts of mental illness,” Sandy says. But the man has reformed his life, and Sandy is determined to help him. “I’m passionate about what I do,” she says. “And I did find him a job with a local employer. “The employer was told about the man’s past issues, and the man did have some previous work experience, which helped his situation.

She has been with Te Ara Mahi since 2012. Clients are referred to her by mental health providers, health authorities and GPs and she works to establish a relationship with them. “It’s a big step for them, stepping out to meet another person,” says Sandy. “Once I’ve earned their trust I can help them with things like preparing a CV, honing interview skills, how to present themselves for a job interview. “I can talk to prospective employers about job placement or training or even trying a job first to see if it works for both parties.” Te Ara Mahi works with a wide range of employers and employees across Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough and the West Coast to help clients with employment, education and training goals and to promote recovery. Traditional Thai cuisine is well known and celebrated throughout the world for its depth of flavour and plated detail, making it one of the most popular Asian cuisines. Eat Thai owner Benjamas (Ben) Srihorn says it’s much like art with lots of flavour and beautiful presentation. “Every dish is like a work of art. It’s colourful and fresh and there are dishes that suit all palates.” At Eat Thai, you can expect to find authentic traditional Thai cuisine that has been perfected with original recipes, techniques and practices learned by the chefs in five-star hotels. “I love the food to be authentic and because Thai food is made mostly from herbs, it is really good for your health,” Ben says. Ben and her husband/head chef Billy Vongleelaleorn came to Marlborough one year ago with their goal of opening their ‘dream business’. “We came to Marlborough looking for a restaurant opportunity and because we knew the previous owner, she let us know when she was selling. “I love the geography of Marlborough. “I have always worked with a lot of people in cities that were home to millions, so coming here was a breath of fresh air,” she says. Billy worked in hotels throughout Thailand before coming to Auckland and studying culinary art. He works alongside chef Phanida Deekul

who joined the team earlier in the year and has a huge amount of experience working in five-star Thailand hotels. “Phanida came to us from the Mandarin Oriental Bankok Hotel where she worked for four years. “This is one of the places people who study in the hotel and hospitality industry want to work at... it’s very high class,” says Ben. Eat Thai’s extensive menu has dishes that will appeal to all tastes, from spicy to sweet and everything in between. “We also provide many gluten free, vegetarian options and our dishes do not contain any MSG. “Out of 34 dishes, 23 are gluten free and we also offer vegetarian options. “But we are also very flexible and can swap ingredients to what the customer prefers,” she says. The seating area is described as being cosy and child friendly, and the atmosphere ‘welcoming and relaxed’. “We want out customers to feel relaxed and happy and we spend a lot of time chatting with them. Children are always welcome and we even have pens they can draw on the mirrors with.” Groups and special occasions can be booked any day of the week and the restaurant is even open all public holidays. Bouncing can be fun Whether you are a parent organising a birthday party or an event planner looking to include some fun for youth, a bouncy castle is good option. Why hire inflatables? They’re portable. They can be delivered directly to your door. When the party’s over, they are then collected and taken away. All you have to worry about is having fun!

Bouncy castles are so much fun and they can be used for various reasons outside the party environment including drawing in customers at a store or venue, or making a public event family-friendly. They are also affordable to hire. Are you looking for bouncy castle hire? Look no further than your local friendly inflatable specialists.

Hire first, then buy Do you have a project or contract that requires the use of heavy equipment or trucks? Perhaps you are looking to expand your company’s fleet and capabilities and want to trial specific machinery? What-ever your reason, consider hiring first before buying. equipment will be most advantageous to your business. Certainly, initial cost is a major factor in the decision process, but it’s not the only one – there are several things to consider when it’s time to gear up – usage, availability and more. One of the biggest benefits is that when you hire, you are often paying for the newest equipment with the latest technology. Talk to your local friendly machinery hire businesses and find out what equipment they have available.

By Celeste Alexander The annual Pamper Day, held for women in the Marlborough community, is just around the corner but organisers are in need of good quality second hand clothing. The volunteer-run event set for August 17 was created by local community support worker Noralyn Berwick for women whose life had been difficult, to give them a relaxing day being pampered. So far a number of local hair and beauty

businesses have come on board to volunteer their time, but as part of the day, quality second hand clothing is also needed. “If anyone has quality clothing they are happy to donate we would be really grateful. “It might also be a nice opportunity to make room in your wardrobes for spring,” Noralyn says. Clothing donations can be dropped off to the Salvation Army headquarters on George Street, Blenheim between 9am - noon on weekdays.

Boxing match a sellout Fight for Life welcomes live streaming venues By Celeste Alexander Ticket sales for the Life Education Trust’s Fight for Life event, set for September 30, has been such a sellout success that organisers have decided to introduce new venues for live-streaming. Tickets for the ringside action sold out well ahead of the event, so a second room within the Clubs of Marlborough will be set up as a live streaming venue. Out of the 30 tables that will be set up, only four are still available at a cost of $500 for a table of 10. This price includes platters of finger food and anyone interested are urged to get in quick. Simply email mattandjo@farmside.co.nz For those who have missed out on tickets but still want to be part of the action, the Redwood Tavern, Woodbourne Tavern and Waterfront Bar & Grill have confirmed they will also be live-streaming venues. Trust member Jo McCormick says the Redwood Tavern will be taking the red corner, the Woodbourne Tavern the blue corner while the Waterfront Bar & Grill will stay neutral. “Entry to these three venues will be by donation which will go directly to the Life Education Trust. “We really are thrilled with the level of interest and the support from local businesses. Road race shows personal bests By Cathie Bell The Marlborough Harrier Club held its road championship races on the Grovetown circuit last Saturday, with many runners and walkers achieving personal bests. Most runners and walkers did personal bests over the course, he says. “We had four non-members turn up for a run with one taking a first in the Open Men category.”

Rangers City grabs important win Rangers City notched an impressive 4-3 victory over Central in the Top of the South Football Competition. City took the lead via an own goal. Milan Cunliffe-Post, Keagan Mortimer and Matt Weaver added to the tally. Central who haven’t had a decent outing for a while took some time to get into the game but finally found goals with Stephen McCaa scoring twice while Matt McCormick added another. It was more one-way traffic as Central Pirates ripped apart FC Nelson Reserves. Alex Duley was brilliant scoring from two dead ball situations while Bryce Smith and Liam Sluiter got on the scoresheet to end the game 4-1 and make it two from two for the Pirates. In the Division 1 Round 3 competition, it was Clubs of Marlborough Rangers who bounced back from a 6-0 loss the week before to beat Blenheim Valley Cobras 2-1. Paul Mustey back from injury scored as well as Neil Henry. Blenheim Valley defaulted giving three points to Blenheim Valley Masters in an even competition.

Division 2 saw Trojans go down 3 2 to Trojans Spartans while Rangers Development beat Picton Panel and Paint 3 2. Division 3, and it was Picton Crow Tavern Masters losing to Rangers Masters 3 2 while Rangers United got up over Redwood Masters 4 3.
