Fire brigade funds kits for families Continued from page 1 It was Liz Buttimore, coowner of the Arbour Restaurant who approached the brigade about doing a fundraising dinner, inspired by her own father who served 15 years as a volunteer firefighter. The dinner was a sellout and a huge number of auction items were put up for bids, including the handyman services of three of the brigade’s volunteer firefighters. “It’s been on my list and something I’ve really wanted to do. “The work these guys do is amazing as they are not only firefighters but they do community service as well, so it’s been a pleasure to support them,” Liz says. The dinner was a huge success, raising $15,000 which the brigade decided to put back into the community, spokesperson Rowan Ingpen

says. “After a lot of consideration it was decided to make up the kits and work with the school to distribute them.”

Around 140 kits were put together and delivered to the school. “To put a fire spin on it, we approached the Renwick

Lions Club who came on board and generously funded a smoke alarm for each kit,” he says. Other items include head-

torches, a radio, thermal blanket, rope, first aid kit, a tarpaulin and a roll of toilet paper. The items were bought from local businesses, and some even provided discounts for the cause. Renwick School principal Simon Heath says it has been a fantastic community initiative that is supporting local families. “As we know with the events over the past five years that these items are pretty important, including working smoke alarms. “It’s another great example of the Renwick community caring for itself,” he says. Rowan and fellow firefighter Karen Timms say the brigade is hugely grateful to people like Liz for the opportunity to fundraise and raise their profile. “It’s people like Liz who are the real heroes,” Karen says.

TWICE WEEKLY

Marlborough artist John Parker dies By Bill McElhinney Prominent Marlborough artist John Shotten Parker has died. John passed away peacefully early on Monday with his wife Kate and daughter Mary at his side. John, known as J S Parker in the art world, is fondly remembered by an earlier generation as an art teacher at Marlborough Girls’ College. John began painting full-time after being awarded the prestigious Frances Hodgkins Fellowship from the University of Otago in 1975. He was recognised nationally in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2002, awarded an ONZM for his 40 years of service to painting.

Further recognition came in 2014 when he was designated one of Marlborough’s ‘cultural treasures’. “John was highly regarded nationally as a significant abstract artist,” long-time friend and owner of the Diversion Gallery in Picton, Barbara Speedy, says. “He will be greatly missed, but his paintings will be a tangible memory. He influenced many people with his striking works.” Many of John’s paintings were inspired by the light and colours of the Wairau Plains and the Wairau River. “He inspired us to look at the colours around us and appreciate their beauty,” Barbara says.

Avoiding 13 to cut changes

By Cathie Bell New streets in Marlborough will no longer have a ‘13’ in them under a new policy proposed by the council. Er ica Hobbs told the Marlborough District Council’s full council meeting last week that ‘a significant amount’ of work is caused by people not wanting their house to have the number 13, and asking for it to be changed. Some of the changes can be as simple as changing it to ‘13A’, she says. “It sounds minor but a lot of people out there don’t like 13. “It devalues their property or impacts on their lives. We made the decision not to allocate it.” Jean Wilson, who attends council meetings on behalf of Grey Power, says she has lived at a house with the address ‘13’ since 1955 without any ill effects. Jean says the supposedly unlucky number didn’t worry her. “I wouldn’t say it’s an unlucky number, but I don’t think it’s brought me a great deal of luck.” Likewise, councillor Michael Fitzpatrick has his business at 13

Cup in October The America’s Cup is coming to Marlborough on October 12. It has been confirmed that Picton will enjoy an overnight tour of the Auld Mug with a parade, foreshore reception and evening event to celebrate New Zealand winning the sailing trophy again. Picton’s own Joseph Sullivan, along with fellow Team NZ cycler Andy Malloney, and other team representatives, will attend.

Ohau Point cleared Work crews are now able to access the entire coastal corridor north of Kaikoura for the first time since the November 2016 earthquake, with the slip at Ohau Point being cleared. Transport Minister Simon Bridges says construction crews now have access to the entire stretch of the coastal corridor north of Kaikoura which will greatly speed up the reinstatement of this important route. “Crews are now establishing a construction track around Ohau Point, which will allow work crews to enter a new phase of reconnecting State Highway One, which includes the installation of around 9000 square meters of steel mesh ‘drapes’ to protect the area from further rock falls and will allow the clearance of rocks close to the road level that have been previously inaccessible.”

Jean Wilson has lived at number 13 since 1955.

Maxwell Road. Erica says a review found there are 13 people in eight teams across council who deal with addressing issues, and the new policy will

help streamline all that work. However, councillors voted to hold off on the new policy, until a definition of ‘private road’ could be clarified after councillor Geoff

Evans raised concern that it would make private land accessible to anyone, regardless of the owner’s views. The policy will be discussed at the council meeting next month.

The Sun sponsors new Business Hall of Fame Wednesday Sun The business people who helped build Marlborough to the district it is today are to be recognised by a new award, the Marlborough Business Hall of Fame. The award, run by the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce and proudly sponsored by The Blenheim Sun, is open for nominations now. Chamber president Nita van Grinsen says that in New Zealand we see great profiling of sporting heroes and public servants. “However, business people – in particular successful business people – often go without the recognition they deserve and in some cases, receive negative stigma as a result of

their efforts and achievements.” The Blenheim Sun and Marlborough Chamber of Commerce recognise that the efforts of individual business people are actually the fuel that keeps the economy running, Nita says. “Business people through their individual efforts risk capital, provide jobs, and oil the wheels of the economy.

“The Blenheim Sun Business Hall of Fame is therefore designed to recognise those who have, during their business career, demonstrated service both to their industry and to the greater Marlborough community.” Anyone can nominate someone for the Business Hall of Fame, and self-nominations and posthumous nominations may also be accepted. Email the chamber on info@mcoc.org.nz with your name and contact details, who you are nominating and why. Closing date for these is 15 September. The award will be made at the chamber’s business awards gala dinner on 6 October.

House fire Firefighters were called to a blaze in the bedroom of a Julian St home on Sunday about 9.45am. Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Nigel Botham says a grandmother and her grandson were home at the time. Three appliances attended to the fire and quickly had it under control, with the cause of the fire accidental. No-one was injured.

Long-serving hospital chaplain steps down

14th - 20th August 2017

By Bill McElhinney For the past 17 years, Blenheim Anglican minister Kevin Gwynne has been the person patients at Wairau Hospital, their family members, and even hospital staff can turn to for a sympathetic ear or pastoral or spiritual guidance. Each day, Kevin does his rounds at Wairau, meeting patients, providing comfort and support. “Being in hospital for a lengthy period or even for a few days is not always the most pleasant experience,” Kevin says. “Some patients may be suffering frustration ... or facing permanent disability or even terminal illness. “Sometimes people just need someone to talk to. “Hospital chaplains do this for anyone, no matter what their social or spiritual background.” Now Kevin has handed the baton to another Anglican minister, Chris Donaldson, who has been the vicar for Havelock and the Sounds since 2012. Chris and his wife Susanne served in the same parish from 1982-85 before going to work with Youth With a Mis-

A motorcycle enthusiast, Chris is also the welfare officer for the Marlborough branch of the Ulysses Motorcycle Club. “Most people are very happy to see a chaplain,” Chris says as he does his daily rounds. “They are also often happy to have someone pray with them.” Chris has also been heartened by the response from

the hospital staff, who he says are very happy to have a chaplain visiting the wards. “It’s busy,” he says, “so I have five volunteers who assist for two or three hours a week. “I’m training some more so we can cover all needs, especially on weekends.” Less than 50 per cent of the funding for hospital chaplaincy comes from the Government and the district health board, so the rest is raised through contributions from Marlborough churches. .and events such as Christmas in the Park.

By Bill McElhinney Need some help with budgeting, advice on child care, or are concerned about aging family members? There’s a wealth of help and knowledge available behind the bright blue doors at 25 Alfred St, Blenheim. The building is home to the Marlborough Community Centre and houses groups such as Citizens Advice Bureau, the Family Budget Centre, Birthright Marlborough, Age Concern and the Blenheim Early Childhood Centre. A renovation project which began earlier this year has now been completed, and on Mond ay a f ter noon Marlborough mayor John Leggett congratulated the Marlborough Community Centre Trust at a function held to mark the occasion. “The trust provides leadership for community groups,” John says, “which is important now, as there are more calls on those who provide community services.” The 20 user groups now have a brighter, more spacious building with upgraded facilities. “We have upgraded the fire system, which was a safety

concer n” Ma rlborough Community Trust chairman Neville Lawson says. The ground floor meeting room has been extended to ensure disabled access for all users; there are new energy efficient LED lights and wifi access throughout the building. Some new carpet and paint have transformed the interior to a light, bright space. “It’s a good, solid building,” Neville says, and now it’s up to code. “We did look at moving, but decided on an upgrade, and thanks to support, we have been able to transform

the place.” Neville thanked the tenants for their patience during the months of renovations and paid tribute to the work of trustees Owen Batchelor and Lyn Reeves and former trust chairman Barry Abernathy. The cost has been met by a generous grant from the Rata Foundation, a Marlborough District Council allocation and the trust itself. The trust, which has run the centre for 25 years, rents out office and meeting space to not-for-profit Marlborough organisations for as little as $180 a month.

Young jazz stars shine at concert By Bill McElhinney The next wave of young South Island musical talent put on a cracking show in the ASB Theatre, Blenheim, on Saturday night. The theatre was almost full and the crowd was thoroughly entertained by the young musicians who had travelled to Blenheim to take part in the annual Southern Jam Jazz Festival. Despite a hectic week of performances, the youngsters exuded plenty of energy and exuberance, even the group from Invercargill who had travelled for 30 hours to be at this year’s festival for the first time. The evening showcased pieces from all participating schools and featured the AllStars Band, compiled from the top musicians of this year’s event.

There was something for everyone as each group took the stage to present a wide range of music ranging from traditional jazz to Latin beats and even an original composition. Performers from Marlborough colleges shone, with Jonty Zydenbos showing why he won the award for most outstanding trumpet player; Jack McRae the most outstanding drummer; and Aiden Brown blew a didgeridoo to win the award for the most outstanding non traditional jazz instrument. “Once again it was a very successful event,” says Katrina Lange from Marlborough 4fun, organisers of the event. “Clubs, bars and restaurants were packed for the performances and at the primary schools that were visited the kids loved learning about the cool instruments being played.”

Sales and marketing consultant for Harcourts Marlborough Katie Gibbons presented a cheque for $400 to Alzheimers Society Marlborough president Diane Tolley on Monday. The money was raised as part of Harcourts’ community referral network which provides sponsorship to nominated organisations and groups. One of Katie’s clients nominated the society following a successful property sale. Diane was thrilled to accept the cheque and says the funds will support ongoing work with people living with dementia in Marlborough. Photo by Celeste Alexander.

Secondhand Sunday on again The chance for people to pass on goods to others at their front gate is being held again on the morning of Sunday August 27. Second-hand Sunday, organised by the Marlborough District Council’s solid waste section, offers people a free and easy way to move their unwanted goods. Solid waste manager Alec McNeil says it’s a community opportunity which also serves to cut back on material going into the landfill. Between 10am and 1pm on Sunday 27

August people may leave unwanted goods at their gates, allowing others to take them away for free. People with goods to give away should register addresses in advance and registered properties will be listed on the council website advertisement for Second-Hand Sunday. Call Council on 03 520 7400 before 1.00pm on Friday 25 August, by email: mdc@marlborough.govt.nz or via the website www.marlborough.govt.nz.

Excited! It’s my most favourite place ever.

I just worry about the centre of town, what impact it’s going to have, people going out to Westwood.

I feel reasonably indifferent, actually. I won’t be one of the first customers to flock there.

I think it’s wrong. Town has enough cheap things with the Warehouse, I don’t think it should be in our town. Keep our businesses going with what we’ve got.

It will affect a lot of businesses, people will really notice it.

Norm Fowke Glass Not Thrilled Dear Ed, The front page with thrilling news of K-mart coming to Blenheim does not fly my kite. I would far rather spend at locally-owned stores than big stores. All it is doing is encouraging over-spending by people. Consumerism. No thanks. Local First Blenheim

Better Sentences Dear Ed, There has been criticism of the Spring Creek roundabout in your letters page. The $4 million spend is a waste of public money. A 50 km/hour zone would have cost nothing. But driving through Spring Creek over the last few months, I have noted ‘workers’ standing around looking idle. Groups of them. The whole project both in its conception, justification and building, has been a bad joke. Not a good look to the public passing by who are footing the bill for something that was not needed in the first place. Is it not true that a Spring Creek person has kept a running tally of no work days and it’s near 20! Percy Parker Blenheim

Lost my dream Dear Ed, I have been involved with Lotto since it changed from the Golden Kiwi Lottery. I bought my ticket every Saturday and then later on a Wednesday. I thought the lottery was a good thing as the proceeds went to charity. And, as the old saying goes, if you’re LOCAL not in, you can’tHIRE win! and my dream of a big win seemed to be real again. We had the odd $12 and $26 win but winning a prize seemed to be getting more difficult. Recently I marked off five numbers on my ticket, which brought a smile to my face, but when I handed my ticket in the next day I was given only $37. Yet for six numbers you could win $6 million! What’s going on? My dreams are fading and I feel I have been robbed! Fred Blenheim

Dear Ed, Isn’t it nice to see a citizen jumping for joy on the front page, bragging about how they have been instrumental in driving the nails into the local small businesses’ coffins. Small family businesses, who built this town, and who have already got their backs to the wall! Shame on you all, who had anything to do with dragging yet another heartless multinational here, to take what little community funds we have left off-shore. Well done that woman. Dave Nee Blenheim

Lots of plastic Dear Ed, While there is concern about plastic bags, that’s not enough to be concerned about. Jetskis to be registered in bylaw change European By Cathie Bell Jet skis will have to be registered, the same way boats and cars are under new navigation safety bylaws. The local navigation safety bylaws are being reviewed, and in a new measure, ‘personal water craft’, more commonly known as jet skis, must have a visible individual registration number. The number would be provided to the jet ski owner when they registered online and would be recorded on a national database alongside the name and address of the owner. The cost of registration would be a one-off charge of approximately $60. This registration would also

cover the owner to use the jet ski in other areas where a similar bylaw is already in place including Auckland, Northland and Waikato. Nationally, half the recreational

vessels on our waters are power boats, a third are kayaks and just five per cent are jet skis. Marlborough Harbourmaster Luke Grogan says the way jet skis are being used by some people both in the Marlborough Sounds and on some rivers is becoming a safety concern. “Jet skis are becoming more popular because they are capable machines that cost less than a boat and are a lot of fun. “While many people do operate them safely, we are getting an increasing number of calls every summer from people concerned about jet skis being ridden at high speeds too close to shore and, in a high-speed collision with a swimmer, a kayaker or another

vessel, the consequences are likely to be fatal.” Having a registration system would enable targeted educational campaigns to be delivered direct to jet ski owners and would make it easier for complaints to be dealt with, he said. Submissions on this and other proposed changes to council’s navigation bylaws will close on 31 October 2017. The proposed changes are available on the council website www.marlborough.govt.nz/ search?q=navigation+bylaws Council will consider submissions before finalising any changes and it is expected that the updated bylaws will be in place mid-way through next year.

Hypnosis an opportunity By Celeste Alexander It’s been four weeks since I first walked into Chris Steadman’s Ntrance Hypnosis Clinic, nervous, tired and with a ravenous sweet craving. Chris offered me a trial of her Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis Therapy, aiming to show that her relaxation techniques can speak to one’s subconscious and ‘turn off’ sugar and food cravings. For my first session I sat in her comfortable lounger, fidgeting and worrying that I would not be hypnotised, Chris explained that it is nothing like ‘stage Hypnosis’ where people do weird things but rather it’s a deep relaxation. She instructed me to sit back, relax and look at the black circle on the ceiling. She spoke in soothing tones and I found myself drifting back and forth. Now and again my thoughts wandered to my grocery list, my work schedule and other random thoughts, which I’m told is normal. I recall hearing her asking me to slowly open my eyes and I looked about wondering how long it had been. To me, it felt like 10 minutes, but looking at the clock it had been over half an hour. Hypnosis, to me, felt very relaxing, almost

like taking a nap even though I could still hear fragments of Chris speaking. What followed over the next few weeks was even more surprising. I began eating three, smaller portioned meals each day, and I not once felt the craving or ‘need’ to snack in between. I reduced the number of coffees I drink to just two a day with half a sugar, down from six cups a day each with two sugars. The only way I can describe it is like this – it was like a switch in my brain was flicked off. I just don’t want to snack, I don’t have to force myself to resist sweet treats and I don’t feel hungry between meals. I even halved my portion sizes without even thinking about it. Four weeks on after completing the four-session therapy, I have more energy and my clothes are beginning to feel a little looser and I’m much more positive and happier! If I am asked if it has worked for me, I would answer ‘yes’, but the real proof won’t be in the pudding for this girl, but rather in six months to see if it continues to be a permanent change. Thank you Chris for the opportunity.

Call for metal posts The Marlborough District Council should demand that vineyards use metal posts, not treated timber ones, a Blenheim resident says. Alan Hall told Marlborough mayor John Leggett during a public meeting on Monday night that the council could stop the problems with disposing of old treated timber posts by stopping their use in the district.

“The council have it within their grasp to impose, if it is in the interests of the community to not have something that is detrimental to the community and the environment. “It is time to say if you want to grow grapes, fine, but you have to put them on steel posts.” John told residents all their comments will be ‘taken on board’ by the council.

Council solid waste manager Alec McNeil talks to the public meeting about a pyrolysis plant.

Manager moving near plant

Hundreds turn out for timber meeting

Marlborough District Council solid waste manager Alec McNeil has bought a section in the Taylor Pass subdivision, near a proposed timber pyrolysis plant, and intends to live there. He told a public meeting that he has no issue with the plant’s location, and in response to interjections about whether he’d live near it, he said he would. “I’ve bought a section there and hope to move in there in June next year.” Air quality scientist Cathy

By Cathie Bell Hundreds of people were at a public meeting to discuss the Marlborough District Council’s proposal to put a pyrolysis plant in at the Bluegums landfill, not far from the Taylor Pass residential subdivision. Residents concerned about property values and potential health issues grilled council staff and Waste Transformation Ltd’s Mike Henare and scientist Cathy Nieuwenhuijsen about the plant’s technology and potential emissions from the disposal of CCA-treated timber, particularly old vineyard posts. While they accepted the science around the plant, all wanted it to be based somewhere else than at the landfill. Mike says the proposed plant will

be as big as two 20-foot containers, with a four-bay shed to store charcoal, and a portable office. A smaller version operates in Timaru, under restrictions imposed by regional council Environment Canterbury, and he says he expects there to be conditions as part of any resource consent. “I’m happy to be tested, happy to be scrutinised in whatever way, shape, or form this community expects of people who operate within this community.” Mike explained the pyrolysis process, stating it did not involve ‘burning or combustion’ and there are no open flames, but a thermochemical process that sees the arsenic in the timber treatment ‘bonded’ to the resulting charcoal product, which

will be sold for industrial use, mostly in Australia. Cathy says a model using two years of weather data has been developed to show where the small amount of potential air emissions may disperse, and this will be available in a report, likely to be used by the company in the resource consent process. Deputy mayor Terry Sloan chaired the meeting and emphasised that it was purely to inform residents about the proposed plant and how it works, and to get feedback. The company has yet to apply for resource consent for the plant, and if it does, that will go through a ‘robust’ process, he says, which is likely to include public hearings by an independent commissioner.

Rickshaw riders sponsored By Cathie Bell Whitehaven Wines is sponsoring a team entered into this month’s Rickshaw Run in India, because of the connection with former Blenheim woman Denelle MacDonald. Each team entered into the Ricksaw Run must raise a minimum of £1000 for charity, at least £500 of which goes to official charity Cool Earth, an environmental charity that works in partnership with indigenous communities. Whitehaven Wines are sponsoring team Camel Tow, made up of Dubaibased Denelle, Aneel Kesry, and Will Sleigh,

will split all funds raised on Givealittle equally between Cool Ear th, and the Cancer Society Marlborough. The team left Kochin in southern India on Monday, and will drive what they describe as ‘a glorified lawnmower resembling a sewing machine on wheels’ the length of India, 3,000 kilometres from Kochin to Jaisalmer at the top of India, by August 27. “There is also the traffic to contend with, with 70 million vehicles in India, 45 million cows and 30,000 elephants.”

Nieuwenhuijsen, who is assessing the proposed plant’s potential impact for the company as part of a possible resource consent application, says if emissions breached health standards, she will recommend to the company that it not go ahead. Her company is independent, she says, and both its reputation and her own rested on that. “And yes, I’d live there. “I have three young children and I’d be happy to live there.”

Non Surgical Endovenous Laser Treatment Walk In, Walk Out Treatment that’s Reassuringly Local CALL FOR YOUR FREE, NO OBLIGATION DOCTOR’S ASSESSMENT & SCAN IN BLENHEIM

A range of cosmetic treatments are available.

Ageing gracefully with enhanceskin Did you know that enhanceskin, the clinic that brought walk-in walk-out varicose vein treatment to Blenheim, also offers a range of non-invasive cosmedical services? It’s almost a year since Registered Nurse, Lacey Boyd, began offering consultations at the Churchill Trust Private Hospital in Blenheim. Lacey has been expertly tutored in facial rejuvenation techniques and treatments by Dr. David Orsbourn. Her gentle touch and calming manner, combined with enhanceskin’s ethos of helping clients age gracefully, has already proved to be a winning combination for many Marlburians. Lacey says, “One of the most common concerns our clients express is that they don’t want to look ‘done’ following a cosmedical treatment, and that’s the last thing we want as well!” She affirms that aging is part of life, and as people grow older, they should expect their face and bone structure to change, often leaving folds, hollows, sagging and asymmetries. Lacey continues, “We can’t, and don’t, aim to turn back the clock on ageing completely, but we can help correct facial asymmetries, resulting in fuller, more balanced features, creating a natural look that’s similar to how you looked a few years back.” With the team at enhanceskin dedicated to client satisfaction, they have put practices in place to guarantee that you’ll get the natural look you would like to achieve when you invest in any treatment plans with them. Firstly, they offer a complimentary cosmedical consultation. Whilst you need to book

in advance, this is a no-obligation, totally free of charge appointment, that allows you to discuss your requirements and concerns. Lacey suggests, you bring a photograph of your younger self to this initial consultation, saying, “Our aim is always to enhance your features so you look like a younger you.” The cosmedical services, enhanceskin offers, are then tailored into a treatment plan for you, this might involve just one treatment or it might be a combination of treatments. Cosmetic Botulinum, a natural, purified protein, gives such a lovely refreshed look, it’s as if you’ve been on holiday. Lacey says, “Clients have told me that their friends notice the difference, but can’t quite work out why they look so good!”. Lacey also recommends the Liquid Face Lift; this procedure restores the cheeks with youthful volume, lifting the jaw line and naso-labial fold. Results can last up to two years, but the treatment can be performed in your lunchtime! enhanceskin also offers lip enhancement to restore your natural lip hydration and border, creating beautifully shaped lips that are elegant, sculpted and well defined, yet subtle and natural looking. Whichever facial rejuvenation treatment, or combination of treatments, a client decides upon, nobody knows what they are visiting enhanceskin for, it could be for a skin or vein assessment... so their secret to aging gracefully stays a secret. Friends and family will all notice how great an enhanceskin client looks, but nobody will know why!

Motorbike maintenance Gavin Neal with Chinese students Wendy Bai and Rena Zhao who are visiting Marlborough to broaden their language skills and experience some of life in New Zealand.

Marlborough man at home in China By Bill McElhinney There were only six other people who spoke English in the Chinese city of Linyi when Marlborough man Gavin Neal arrived there 13 years ago. After studying biology at Canterbury University, Gavin decided to see some of the world. He was drawn to visit China because of its ancient history.

“English is a core subject for university entrance in China” Gavin says. “After arriving in China, I had spent the night travelling to Linyi on a sleeper bus, which got in early, and the person I had arranged to meet me wasn’t there,” Gavin says. “I ended up sitting on the pavement at 5am in a strange place where I couldn’t speak the language. It was pretty scary.” Gavin didn’t enjoy his first year there. He felt isolated. “It was very difficult,” he says. But he soon got to know and love China, and now he runs Leanacres, an education centre

where Chinese students can learn English. “English is a core subject for university entrance in China,” Gavin says. “But many students learn by rote for exams where the questions are just yes-no tick boxes. “We teach our students how to speak the language, how to use English properly. “Last year one of our students was ninth in an English speaking competition for the whole of China.” Gavin’s students range in age from seven to 14, although he has had some adult students as old as 60. He also arranges for some of his students to come to New Zealand for a four-week stay. “They pay their own way,” Gavin says. “They stay with local families and attend the Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ Colleges. “It’s a wonderful way for them to discover New Zealand, which is so vastly different from China.” The pace of change in China is amazing, Gavin says, and there is huge pressure on young Chinese to study and pass exams. Gavin describes Linyi, which is the south of Shandong province, as a ‘small’ Chinese city. The population is about 11 million. “When I first arrived there were about eight high rise buildings in the city, now there are about 800, 20 to 30 stories high!”

LOCALLY OWNED & TRUSTED FOR OVER 18 YEARS

Good motorcycle maintenance could be the difference between having an accident, or avoiding an accident on the road, a long-time Marlborough motorcyclist says. Kiley Boddington has been riding motorcycles for about 28 years, and says it was only more recently that he started thinking about the impact things like vehicle maintenance could have. The inspiration came when he went to a workshop run by motorcycle safety advocate Dave Moss, focusing on suspension. Despite having a fairly new bike, Kiley had his suspension tailored to suit his requirements, and immediately noticed a difference to how safe he felt on the road. “If you’re purchasing a new or secondhand bike I would suggest asking the bike shops to set the suspension up for your own weight and what not,” Kiley says. “I had never had that done before and it made a big difference.” Kiley has seen a lot change when it

comes to motorcycle technology and safety features in his three decades on the road. “Motorbikes are coming out with ABS, which is your antilock brakes and traction control,” he says. “Probably two-and-a-half years ago I purchased a new motorcycle and I suppose the plan was I was going to keep the old motorcycle to do various rides and things [but] going back to the old one I realised that you don’t actually feel as safe and maneuverable on it.” With the unpredictability of other vehicles on the road, Kiley opted to stick with his new bike, due to its better technology and safety features. “The thing I have found is I’ve always tried to treat every vehicle out there as if they are going to do something stupid, really, then you’re sort of semi-prepared for it … you’ve got to realise you’re a pretty small vehicle on the road,” he says.

Garin College ‘family’ We all agree that family is the best place for a child to be raised, so when choosing a boarding school for your child to attend why would you not choose a hostel where your child is going to be part of a family, the Garin family. The Garin College Hostel Trust hostels, Mother Teresa and Francis Douglas houses, are modern, busy, vibrant and stimulating places designed to be like large family homes, with space for only 28 boarders in each hostel looked after by hostel parents. Boarding at Garin offers great experiences for any child and the chance to meet new people, experience new cultures and make new friends.

Being in Nelson and at Garin College offers greater opportunities to be involved in schoolbased, after-school and weekend activities. Nelson has a great environment and is blessed with not only great sporting, recreation and extra-curricular opportunities but being here in Tasman Bay we have wonderful beaches, safe rivers and in the winter the ski field is not far away for those that enjoy the snow. For students who get fully involved, boarding is great fun and very rewarding. A busy boarder is a happy boarder. Education K.I.T.E.

Koru Institute of Training and Education

Nelson College is NZ’s oldest state secondary school and can be described as ‘a boys school with traditions, not a traditional boys school’. Traditions establish a strong sense of belonging and community amongst the students and the staff, without preventing the College from innovating and responding to changing social and educational needs of boys in the 21st century. The diversity of our options structure with its multiple pathways enables students to reach their potential in whatever field they have a passion for. Nelson College runs a unique student

leadership programme, champions performing arts and provides an extensive selection of co-curricular activities including 85 sports teams. This combination allows the full breadth of development for the widest possible range of boys. Excellence through robust self-review and a determination to improve lie at the heart of the college’s everyday practice. We have a clear goal: to be the best we can be for all of our students. This goal provides the focus for developing and challenging our most able students as well as providing extra

support for those who need it. The recent (2016) ERO report confirmed student’s high performance, strong sense of belonging and pride along with innovative and responsive teaching supported by strong and visionary leadership. The renovation of our two historic boarding houses, Barnicoat and Rutherford, is in progress with Barnicoat now completed and Rutherford scheduled for completion in November 2018. Prospective parents are welcome to view the difference that boarding at Nelson College can offer.

Ace a test There are a huge number of tips that can be shared when it comes to studying for exams and tests. Here are a few tips to try. Break it up: A new learning technique called “spaced repetition” involves breaking up information into small chunks and reviewing them consistently over a long period of time. Tell a tale: Turning the details you need to remember into a crazy story helps make the information more meaningful.

Own the omegas: Omega-3 fatty acids, found in certain fish, nuts, and olive oil, are known for their brain-boosting potential. Research has also found just half an hour of aerobic exercise can improve our brain-processing speed and other important cognitive abilities. Essential oils: Research has found that catching a whiff of essential oils (like rosemary or lavender) can help calm students before a big exam.

Street sprint this Sunday By Celeste Alexander The growl of engines and squealing tyres will be heard this Sunday at the Picton Tools & Tyres Street Sprint being held at the Riverlands Industrial Estate. This is a hugely popular annual event held by the Marlborough Car Club and considered its ‘premier event’ for the year. There is a maximum of 40 cars that can enter. A practise run and tour of the course will kick off at 9am then straight after the official timed runs commence. The two main award categories are for the Webb Trophy for the fastest Marlborough Car Club member over the first three timed runs, as well as the top three placings for the overall trophies at the end of an elimination shootout.

There are also awards for the first three timed runs in classes a, b, c and d. In the elimination shootout, the top 16 drivers reduce to eight, four then two before the final run determines the overall winner. Local man Neil Webb has won both these categories a number of times over the years, and will be competing again on Sunday. Neil has won the overall prize seven times and the local prize 10 times since becoming a member of the club nearly 30 years ago. He originally began with a yellow Mini Moke which he won street sprint events twice with, but nowadays he is behind the wheel of a modified Mitsibishi Mirage, 2.3L with Evo running gear. Organising the event is Jason and Tracey Clark and Richard

Saxon Ferris, 14, also won his fight against Caleb Foot in the junior 45kg fight on a split decision, after months of hard training at the gym and with his father Ray. Kayden Warren, 15, fought well in the junior 48kg fight

the scoring and then the floodgates opened with the potential player of the year Harrison Pine scoring four goals in a dominant display eventually running out 6-0 winners with Smith slotting again in the second half. Club mates central will be happy with their trip to Nelson to take on Richmond 2nd XI as they came away 4-1 winners. After struggling in the first 45 with a goal from Jono McCormick leaving them level at 1-1, it was then time to attack and thanks to goals from John Porter, Jared Nott and another from McCormick they left Nelson 4-1 winners. The other game was an entertaining 4-all draw between Rangers City and FC Nelson Reserves. Julian Delgado and Keagan

Mortimer both scored two goals apiece for the tie. Division 1 Round 3 saw six different goal scorers from Clubs of Marlborough Rangers as they beat Blenheim Valley Masters 6-1, while Blenheim Valley Cobras took the round 3 honours beating Blenheim Valley United 4-1. Division 2 saw Rangers Development comprehensively beat Trojans 6-1 to take the round out while Picton Panel and Paint and Trojan Spartans battled out a 2-all draw. Division 3 and Rangers Masters beat Rangers United 2-1 to win the round while Redwood Masters and Picton Crow Tavern draw 1-all.
