It was followed by a long series of aftershocks which caused further damage and trauma.

“There are families still struggling to cope,” Ally says.

“Some children won’t sleep on their own, won’t sleep in an upstairs bedroom, there’s anxiety and bedwetting.

“Each aftershock just reinforced feelings of helplessness.

“For months people couldn’t think straight.”

Locky and Ally’s home, just north of Ward, was broken by the quakes.

They spent the first four nights after the Kaikoura quake in a Blenheim motel, and then eventually moved into a two-bedroom cottage on the farm.

They are planning to build a new home and hope to be in by Christmas 2018.

In the meantime Eddie has to wait as he watches housing materials head south for new East Coast homes.

Blenheim neighbours have been aware of the effect the upheavals have had on the Seddon and Ward communities and the Rotary Club of Blenheim South has raised $35,000 for classroom therapy and support for South Marlborough school children.

“Now it’s time for the next step,” club member Ian Bond, who is managing the latest fundraising project, says.

“We want to help rebuild facilities that

“Imagine then the effect on children – many of whom can only rationalise the earthquakes as ‘monsters under my house.’

“We know from Christchurch it can result in behavioural issues, learning difficulties.

“We have to make sure that doesn’t happen to the children of our East Coast community,” Ian says.

The Rotarians have organised a special event at the ASB Theatre on Tuesday evening.

Called ‘The Day The Earth Moved’, a panel of speakers will talk about the consequences of the earthquakes.

Pre-school and primary school leaders will explain how the children have been affected and a rural family will talk about the effect on their communities.

An earthquake geologist will explain what happened and engineers will give an insight into the infrastructure rebuild.

Spring Creek Junction Hotel operators Mike and Hazel Pink have had their business badly impacted by the ongoing roundabout works outside their front door.

Last time the Sun spoke to the couple, they were looking seriously at closing down.

Mike Pink However, a wave of support from the public gave them some

hope and they have carried on.

“But we’re not opening until 3pm and we’re closing between 7-8.30pm,” says Mike.

“Credit from suppliers has run out – our financial situation is precarious.”

Despite repeated approaches to the New Zealand Transport Agency and Marlborough Roads seeking some assistance, Mike has had no help. Mike

approached Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith, who has put Mike’s case forward without success.

“I feared this might happen,” Stuart says.

“There is just no payout for loss of business.

“This wouldn’t have happened if they hadn’t decided on a roundabout, which I’ve always maintained was the wrong option.”

Logging fatality One person has died in a workplace accident in the Wairau Valley, police say.

The accident, at 2pm yesterday, happened after the worker was operating a wheeled log hauler when it came off the road.

Police say emergency services are at the scene conducting a preliminary investigation and Worksafe have been notified.

No further information is available at this time.

Millionaires here in Marlborough

By Cathie Bell The ‘shell-shocked’ winners of first division Lotto have claimed their prize, showing up at the Countdown Springlands store early yesterday morning.

A ticket sold at the Countdown Springlands Lotto outlet won a

first division prize of one million dollars in Wednesday night’s draw, the Lotteries Commission says.

Staff member Bronwen Swan says the local couple, who don’t want to be identified, were at the store bright and early yesterday,

although not as early as her.

“They knew they’d won when they came in… They were shellshocked.”

Bronwen says it is ‘lovely’ to have sold the ticket to locals and everyone in the store is ‘so excited’ for them.

Store manager Kirsa Shand says the win is ‘going to change their lives for the better’.

“As a business, we’re about making Kiwis lives better, and as a team, we’re really stoked.

“Store-wide, we’re really excited.”

Gales and rain whip across the region Strong north to northwesterly gales howled through the early hours of Thursday morning before easing off by lunchtime.

The burst of heavy rain that accompanied the wild weather pattern saw a small increase of river levels, prompting warnings from Police of surface flooding across the district including on State Highway 6 between

Police have made public the name of the man who died following a crash on State Highway 63, Wairau Valley, on Sunday 6 August.

Nineteen-year-old George Holland of Marlborough, died in the crash between a truck and a ute on the Wye Bridge about 1.30am two weeks ago.

The Serious Crash Unit continues to investigate the cause of the crash, and police extend their sympathies to Mr Holland’s family at this difficult time.

Rail headphones warning KiwiRail is urging people to be alert around the rail network following a rise in incidents involving pedestrians wearing headphones.

This week is Rail Safety Week, with a focus on pedestrian safety around trains.

There was one fatality and six nearmisses between trucks and trains in Marlborough in the year to June.

One year in, two awards

By Celeste Alexander One year into owning their Harrisons Carpet Marlborough franchise, local couple Nathan and Gena Birtles have won two top awards at a recent national conference.

The conference on the Gold Coast of Australia two weeks ago, was attended by 140 New Zealand Harrisons franchise owners.

The couple attended ‘without any expectations’ so were surprised and ‘elated’ when they were named winners of two of the top awards.

Har risons Car pet Marlborough was awarded the Fly Buys Franchise of the Year, and Nathan the Rising Star award.

“We are absolutely over the moon with these awards, especially after only having been in business for one year. They are known to be hard to win and most often given to people who have been operating a lot longer than we have,” Gena says.

“The recognition was a real honour and we are thrilled to be bringing these awards back to Marlborough.”

Nathan and Gena thank their team of local installers for their hard work and quality workmanship.

Jazz, cocktails and new menu

“The new outside dining area is superb and a real hit when we have our pool side jazz evenings. Overall we have had wonderful feedback from the renovation and we welcome anyone who hasn’t visited us yet, to come and try it for themselves.”

Aside from meals, Quench offers live music and drink specials on Thursday evenings, jazz entertainment on Friday evenings and $10 cocktails on Saturdays from 6-8pm. PBA.

Store owners Paul and Sue Robinson say their team is ‘doing a fab job’.

Have your say on the review of the Navigation Bylaws

– your trash may be someone else’s treasure Second-Hand Sundays offer another way of recycling. You can give away goods you no longer need and save yourself a trip to the landfill.

Sunday 27 August is the next Second-Hand Sunday – leave unwanted goods at your gate and let others take them away for free.

Here’s how it works: Register your address in advance.

Registered properties will be listed on the Council website advertisement for Second-Hand Sunday.

Put out a Second-Hand Sunday sign (grey leaflet available from Council website or offices) at your letterbox on Sunday 27 August so people know you have items to give away.

Put the items together in a neat pile, either at your letterbox or next to your driveway.

Remove the sign at 1.00pm and pack up any leftover items. It's your responsibility to remove anything left behind. If you leave it outside your

property boundary then you are in breach of the rubbish dumping bylaw.

Remember: Take items only from properties advertised and where the SecondHand Sunday sign is displayed.

Don’t arrive before 10.00am or after 1.00pm.

Don’t enter the property; items should be at the front gate.

If you have uncollected goods, donate them to a charity shop or take them to the Re-use Shop or Transfer Station.

Living options in retirement years

One of the biggest decisions made later in life is whether or not to remain in the family home.

Boil water notice - Awatere and Seddon Water from Council’s reticulation system in Seddon and the Awatere should be boiled. It does not currently meet the NZ Drinking Water Standard and may contain bacteria or protozoa that are harmful to human health.

Council has bylaws to regulate maritime and navigation safety in the waters of Marlborough and is required to review the bylaws regularly.

We are proposing that we replace the Navigation Bylaw 2009 with a plain English version and update it to: • take into account legislative and technological change such as the promulgation of the maritime Rules Chapter 91; • remove the provisions relating to commercial vessels and replace them with Harbour Master Directions • remove duplication; and • include missing provisions and powers.

Councillors are seeking public feedback on the changes from Monday, 14 August 2017. The deadline for submissions is 5.00pm 31 October 2017.

Anyone can make a submission and your submission can support or oppose the proposals.

Government grant will help Taylor River A sustained effort by Council to restore the water quality of Blenheim’s Taylor River has been recognised by Government with a half million dollar grant to help support the project over the next five years.

The funding will mean more assistance for landowners in the upper catchment of the Taylor River to work with the Council to extend riparian planting along the river and its key tributaries.

Since 2012, Council has been running a monitoring programme to track river health and the physical, biological and chemical influences on water quality.

Much has already been achieved with Council’s Reserves team and community groups, coordinating planting and working with schools.

At the same time Council is upgrading town sewer and water networks to avoid any cross contamination between the sewerage and stormwater systems reaching the river.

The next step is to bring more private property

owners on board with the Taylor River Project, encouraging more riverside planting and more awareness of the effect of run-off from viticulture and pastoral activity.

As well as riverbank planting, the funding will also help pay for more monitoring and survey work on the Taylor River.

Creative Communities Scheme Fund Applications for financial assistance by way of grants under the Creative Communities Local Arts Scheme are now being invited by Marlborough District Council.

The scheme supports and encourages local communities to create and present diverse opportunities for accessing and participating in arts activities within the Marlborough community.

Why does MDC allow this river to be pillaged each year by greedy commercial sock netters?

This only happens because of MDC’s policy of allowing the camper van brigade to buy spots on the river bank.

This is rubbish, no camping, on the Diversion during the season.

Give everybody a fair crack.

DOC, open your eyes, take some advice from the West Coast policing system.

Police the 10 metre standing rule from nets, confiscate gear for non-compliance.

Bring your measuring tape and measure the circumference of nets.

Should be no more than 15 feet.

Barking dogs

Where do I apply?

Dogs that bark at people walking on footpath all day long, gives an old fella a fright.

If dogs bark while they get burgled, who will know or care.

So you can commit fraud and get to keep your job in politics?

Great to know these people are running our country.

Re Benefit Fraud Three Facts: Claiming taxpayer funded benefits to which one is not entitled is theft and a criminal offence.

Stealing from taxpayers and the thousands of New Zealanders who elect to work to care for their families is the ultimate social offence.

Shocking headline I am in shock reading the paper’s headline ‘Boys and blokes - Boys learn skills at Menz Shed’ as the date of the paper clearly states the year as 2017 but, after reading the headline I thought for certain the year was 1950.

So, only boys should be taught to use tools and other useful skills?

I guess the girls can be at home cooking, sewing, and other womanly duties.

They sure can’t be building things.

Great job at perpetuating stereotypes among men and women.

And I thought Simon Heath was more progressive.

What next, a girls’ shed for sewing?

Long way to go yet to fix fishing problems

By Cathie Bell Overcoming the distrust between different fishing groups and sectors will be the biggest barrier to overcome in moving to a system that fairly manages recreational, customary, and commercial fishing, a public meeting in Blenheim has been told.

About 40 people attended the meeting, called by the New Zealand Initiative as part of a nation-wide consultation on proposals to ensure that recreational fishing remains possible despite population growth and declining wild species.

Geoff Rowling, a long-time recreational fishing advocate who has been involved in some of the work Randall has done, told the meeting that he is impressed with the work of Recfishwest, an umbrella group of 64,000 people representing the 740,000 recreational fishers in Western Australia.

mean competing representative groups putting aside their differences and banding together.

Geoff says the thing Recfishwest has, which is lacking in New Zealand, is trust.

“I know a lot of you guys in this room don’t trust me because I’ve been involved in decisions with negative effects on you.

“The level of trust in Recfishwest, government, and commercial fishers in WA is incredible.

“I’ve not seen anything like that in New Zealand for donkeys’ years.

“I don’t know if Recfishwest is the perfect sort of organisation for us, but it is worth having a look at.”

Randall says there is increasing demand for recreational fishing across the country as the population increases.

“Unless we do things differently, recreational fishing will

increasingly come under threat.”

Randall says his final report with recommendations to Government is due in November, but he will circulate a draft to those who have had input into it first.

He says the project was prompted by the late Sir Douglas Myers’ passion for fishing and funded by his friend and neighbour Julian Robertson through the NZ Initiative, which was formerly known as the Business Roundtable.

Mumps on the rise The medical officer of health is warning of a rise in mumps cases in Marlborough.

Dr Andrew Lindsay says three cases of mumps in teenagers and young adults in Marlborough have been notified recently to the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service.

The disease is ‘highly contagious’, he says and it is ‘especially important’ for people under the age of 35 and for parents to take care as severe complications are more common in older children and adults.

These complications include meningitis and sterility in males.

“Mumps causes fever, headaches and pain in the jaw. Swelling may then develop in the glands in front of the ear and some males may experience swelling of their testes. Very young children infected with mumps may have no symptoms but they will still spread the disease if they have it.”

He says vaccination is the best protection against mumps.

Celebrating in style as the lights went on

By Bill McElhinney A rummage through an old photo album turned up a surprise find for retired Blenheim joiner Noel Merrifield.

Noel’s grandfather James Merrifield was one of the original members of the Marlborough Electric Power Board, the group of citizens who set about bringing electric power to Blenheim 90 years ago.

“James was a farmer in the Awatere,” Noel says “He represented the Awatere County Council when the power board was established in 1923.”

The board was responsible for getting the Waihopai hydroelectric scheme built and on August 6, 1927, electric power was switched on in Blenheim for the first time.

vegetables got a mention, and there was Victorian trifle and compote of peaches for dessert.

No mention was made of alcohol, but there was bound to have been a generous supply, as there was a long list of toasts during the evening.

A former editor of The Marlborough Express, Selwyn Vercoe, wrote a book about the occasion, Marlborough Will Shine Tonight, which was published in 1973.

In the chapter about the switching on dinner and ceremony he records: “Celebrations went on far into the night, including a concert tendered its employees by the Power Board.

“It could be said that Blenheim had never been so well lit – in two senses!”

Renwick gears up for carnival

By Celeste Alexander Think circus performers and pyrotechnics and you have the make up of a fun community event.

Renwick School’s inaugural Twilight Carnival event will set the community alight on September 9, and promises an evening of fun and entertainment to thrill all ages.

Organised by the Friends of Renwick School, it is the school’s major event to raise $20,000 for the well-overdue refurbishment of the Renwick Community Memorial Hall.

The Twilight Carnival will consist of more than 20 carnival stalls from a treasure Hunt, juggling and photo booth, to face painting and crazy hair plus much more.

Children will also enjoy the

bouncy castles, pony rides, food stalls and skills-based activities.

Entertaining the crowds will be several live performances, and most exciting of all will be the roving circus performers, a fire show and of course the spectacular finale performance involving pyrotechnics by the Highly Flammable performance group.

The organising committee, including Sonya Sutherland who came up with the idea of a carnival, is hoping it will be a successful fundraising event that will continue to run annually.

“This is going to be a serious event on our local calendar with the proceeds going to a tangible asset used by the wider community, so make sure you put September 9 in your diaries,” Sonya says.

Renwick School students Ben Rodger, Ned Bowron, Hayley Sutherland, Piper Alexander, Matilda Bowron and Taylor Sutherland are all excited for the up and coming Twilight Carnival.

In recent articles I have written about the importance of building your soils with natural materials to create healthy soil life.

In the past I have also said that herbicides, and in particular glyphosate, do a lot of damage to soil.

A recent study proves this point. ‘Soil and Environmental Health after 20 years of Intensive use of glyphosate’, by Robert J. Kremer, PhD, of the University of Missouri School of Natural Resources, cites concerns that include: reduction of nutrient availability for plants and organisms; disruption to organism diversity, especially in the areas around plant roots; reductions of beneficial soil bacteria; increases in plant root pathogens; disturbed earthworm activity; reduced nitrogen fixing at plant roots; and compromised growth and reproduction in some soil and aquatic organisms.

There are less damaging ways to control unwanted plants, such as weeds, some of which enrich the soil as opposed to damaging it.

SULPHUR Sulphur is the eighth most abundant mineral in the body, about half concentrated in your muscles, skin and bones.

Sulphur makes up vital amino acids used to create protein for cells and tissues and for hormones, enzymes, and antibodies.

Our food 50-plus years ago would have supplied our daily requirement of sulphur; an aspect that has since changed, and I am continually surprised at the many benefits most people obtain when they take a daily sulphur supplement.

Those fortunate enough to have the time and space to grow a good percentage of their food in a natural manner are obtaining their daily requirement of sulphur along with many other minerals and elements.

Using gypsum regularly in your garden ensures plants have stored organic sulphur, called methylsulfonylmethane,

known as MSM. One of my conversations this week was with an elderly lady who told me that she had a foot bath every night in which she dissolved about a teaspoon of borax into hot water and added a cup of magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts) and a teaspoon of MSM. She says that after a few weeks of this she is looking much younger and her friends want to know her secret.

The borax will be giving her body boron, magnesium from the Epsom salts and sulphur from the MSM (Which she also takes orally). If you do try this I would like to know the results.

DRAGON FRUIT About three years ago I spotted an unusual fruit called Dragon Fruit. It is the large seed pod of a climbing type of cacti that puts out basal roots and climbs up any object it can latch on to, so it is best grown on a fibrous pole such as a punga log or in a hanging basket.

The spectacular white flowers only come out at night and attract flying night insects such as moths, which move the pollen.

The fruit look a little like a baseballsized pineapple and have hundreds of black seeds inside.

The seeds are easy to germinate but keeping the baby cacti alive I found was a bit of a problem as they are very easy to over-water.

My oldest specimen is now about two to three years old and hopefully large enough to flower this year.

I found that my tomato food is great for feeding cacti during the summer months, so I have made a new cacti and palm food which has a little neem powder added, because both cacti and palms are often plagued by root mealy bugs.

Vandals break up park bike track

By Bill McElhinney Young vandals have done hundreds of dollars worth of damage to a new bike track for children being built at Oliver Park, Redwoodtown.

“We are sure it was kids who did this,” Annette Hewitson, contract manager for Downers, who are building the track for the Marlborough District Council, says.

“When we arrived on the scene on Thursday morning we could see the small footprints in the mud.

“This is really disappointing we had just laid the kerbing and finished it off on Wednesday evening and now parts of it have been destroyed.

“It’s going to cost up to $3000 to fix.”

“They must have used rocks, something heavy to break this,” says Downer worker Dave Tapping, who was at the park yesterday morning with workmate Tony Gardiner to inspect the damage.

“The whole area was fenced off and they had to break into it to do what they did,” Dave says.

“They even managed to scrawl

‘Die’ in the fresh concrete.

“It’s ridiculous!

“The project is a cycle road,” council road safety co-ordinator Robyn Blackburn says.

“It’s something we’ve seen in other areas and we, along with Bike Walk Marlborough and local schools were keen to see it established here.

“There used to be a similar thing at the park in the late 1960s,” she says.

“We got to a stage where we needed to replace the old BMX track that was there, and this project was decided on.”

The cycle road will have kerbs, a roundabout, a pedestrian crossing and road signs and is designed to teach young cyclists about road safety and build their confidence before they begin riding the streets of Blenheim.

Some old trees in the area have been removed to make way for the track, which will have a packed gravel surface when it is completed next month.

The damage has been reported to Blenheim police, who are investigating.

Shaving hair for hope

By Celeste Alexander After losing a friend to suicide this year, local woman Roleen Claassens has decided to shave her hair off to raise awareness and funds for the Hope Walk event next month.

Roleen, a medical receptionist, will go under the shaver next Tuesday and is hoping to inspire people to make a donation.

“I’ve never done anything like this before, but I’ve been thinking about my friend a lot lately.

“She had shaved her own hair off for a friend who had cancer, so I thought I could do this for her and to raise money for a good cause,” she says.

Hope Walk will start at Seymour Square with a 2.7km walk around Blenheim, followed by a free sausage sizzle and refreshments for everyone walking.

There will be short talks, songs and skits before the balloons are released.

Homeless motels cost Govt $8m

By Cathie Bell The Government has spent $8 million on buying four motels around New Zealand with plans to buy two more, including one in Blenheim.

The Ministry of Social Development’s application to turn the Brydan Accommodation motel on the corner of Rose Street and Middle Renwick Road has moved to the next stage.

It had been put on hold last month after residents objected to the ministry’s plan to house homeless families in the motel because of a lack of housing in Blenheim.

A council planner confirmed yesterday that application has gone to ‘limited notification’ and letters have been sent to those deemed affected by proposal, to tell them they can make a submission on the application by 5pm September 12.

After questions from Labour’s Social Development spokesperson Carmel Sepuloni, the Government revealed on Wednesday it has bought four motels at twice their valuation for emergency housing in Gisborne,

By Cathie Bell Four kindergartens in Marlborough are among the 220 competing nationwide to grow the tallest sunflower or the widest sunflower head.

An amazing 11,612 kindy kids around New Zealand will be cultivating their gardening skills as part of this year’s Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens Project, which starts on Monday and runs until December 6.

Picton, Redwoodtown, Renwick, and Witherlea kindergartens are taking part and each has been sent a Daltons starter pack with everything the children need to grow their own Kings Seeds Skyscraper sunflowers, which have the potential to grow up to four metres high.

Daltons general manager Colin Parker is thrilled with the return of the project this year, and cannot wait to see what the kids produce.

“These youngsters are our future gardeners

and we want to nurture them from the get-go.

The competition aspect adds a little extra fun to the project for the children, but we are more focused on creating opportunities to spark a lifelong love of gardening.

“Getting them out in the garden and growing their own sunflower is a fantastic way for these children to build confidence through hands on experience and learn about the wonders of plants.”

At the end of the project, kindergartens will also nominate their “Daltons best little gardener,” to receive a certificate and their very own prize pack, courtesy of Daltons.

Carmel says what’s really concerning is that in each of the cities where the motels have been bought, the Government has sold off much-needed state houses.

“In Gisborne, where there has been a loss of 62 state houses, the Government paid $2,150,000 for a motel valued at $910,000.

In Hastings, where there has been a loss of 14 state houses, the Government paid $1,840,000 for a property valued at $900,000.

“In Napier, where there has been a loss of 137 state houses, the Government paid $1,850,000 for a property valued at $910,000.

“Meanwhile, taxpayers have bought a motel in Auckland for $2,650,000, again more than twice the QV valuation.

“It’s simply irresponsible and poor planning by the Government to be paying these sums for motels while continuing to sell off state houses,” she says.

Silver Lake was published earlier this year, followed

Toothbrushes in to benches Local schools, not for-profit clubs and community groups are invited to take part in a recycling project a chance to win prizes simply by collecting oral care waste.

The project encourages recycling of eligible oral care items, including toothpaste tubes and packaging, non-electric toothbrushes and packaging, floss containers and packaging and interdental brushes and packaging.

The project is being run by recycling company TerraCycle in partnership with Colgate.

By sending their used oral care products to TerraCycle to be recycled, New Zealand schools, preschools, not-for-profit clubs and community groups could win one of 10 $1000 cash prizes or one of five garden

beds made from recycled materials valued at $1500 along with a $200 Mitre 10 voucher.

“After running numerous successful oral care recycling contests in past years, we’re thrilled to take the project to the next level,” Colgate general manager John Garside says.

Each eligible shipment of oral care waste received by TerraCycle between now and October 29 will count as an entry into the final prize draw and that week’s cash prize draw.

Each cash prize will be drawn weekly throughout the promotion, and the five garden bed and Mitre 10 voucher winners will be drawn at the end of the contest period as the final prize draw. Eligible groups simply

need to sign up to recycling programme for free to send these items via New Zealand Post to TerraCycle for recycling.

“We’re calling on New Zealanders to help us divert oral care waste from the landfill,” Jean Bailliard from TerraCycle says.

“This is a great way for the community to engage with recycling and learn about waste – all while having the opportunity to win some fantastic prizes!”

The programme looks to extend the lifecycle of everyday oral care items regardless of brand. The items will be pelletised then potentially recycled into generic products such as park benches, watering cans and waste bins.

Recycle those old toothbrushes and you could win a prize.

In Justin Marshall I trust The Crusaders’ Super Rugby victory gave me a chance to rub a few friends’ noses in it and the best way to do it was Justin Marshall’s commentary quotes.

Whether it’s his ‘boomfa’, ‘yes boy’ or ‘oh me, oh my’ one liners, it appears the former All Black halfback has plenty of detractors for his over-excited and, at times, fan boy stance.

Personally, he has never bothered me.

Is he the best analyst of a rugby game? No, but he’s not ear-bleedingly bad either.

The reality is that New Zealand doesn’t produce quality rugby commentators.

My childhood had the soundtrack of Keith Quinn, while very knowledgeable, he is best remembered for his ‘Lomu - oh, oh!’ mistake

which was meant to be ‘Lomu - all muscle and pump!’

Grant Nisbett has been Sky’s voice of rugby and he does a dependable job but I doubt he’ll be remembered in hallowed halls of commentary greatness.

The best analytical voice in my view was former All Black prop John Drake, who provided expert comments for Sky’s rugby broadcasts until his untimely death in 2008 at age 49.

Drake was level-headed, precise and had sound judgement.

He also spoke in plain, knowledgeable terms about one area of the game all rugby fans struggle with - the scrums.

assistant coach Grant Fox was another who called a game of rugby with a wise eye.

He praised and criticised players when needed and gave sound reasoning as to why.

It’s a thankless task being in any high level rugby position in New Zealand.

The social media environment we live in means anyone can hide behind a computer or mobile phone and type their hatred to their hearts’ content.

The other alternative is muting the commentary or not watching all together, but I get the feeling disliking Marshall is a fun hobby for a lot of people and they don’t want their fun spoiled.

Redwood Bobcats success

By Cathie Bell The Redwood Bobcats football team has returned from the Alan Fraser Memorial Girls’ Tournament, buoyed up by success and looking forward to next year.

The Waimakariri United Football Club in Kaiapoi hosted the girls-only tournament for its third year, and eight teams of 80 girls entered the 11th grade section, including the Redwood Bobcats.

T he club’s website says the Blenheim team and rivals the Southern Girls from Dunedin both reached the final having not conceded a goal, and after extra time with the score tied at one-all, penalties were needed to crown the Southern Girls as the 11th Grade Champions.

Paddon seeks points Kiwi rally driver Hayden Paddon is seeking points for his Hyundai Motorsport team in this week’s Rallye Deutschland.

In recent months, Paddon and codriver Seb Marshall have contested two tarmac non-World Rally Championship rallies in the Hyundai New Generation i20 R5 as part of building their experience on the surface with which Paddon is least familiar.

“It’s my fifth time here and we want to finish the rally. It’s clear that my team-mates Thierry [Neuville] and Dani [Sordo] will be challenging for the win, so we must play the team role and ensure we pick up some manufacturer points in case one of them runs into trouble.”

Nominations open Nominations for outstanding athletes to be inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame are open now, Sport Tasman says.

Last year 10 people were inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame and 34 into the Sports Roll of Honour, and organiser Terri Willcocks expects another 30 to 35 names to be added this year.

Nominees must have been selected to represent New Zealand at full senior level or at an international event, while Roll of Honour nominees must have represented New Zealand at age group level or as a member of a special national team.
