Flying high Mary Poppins will be magic

By Bill McElhinney Mary Poppins will fly through the air at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim next year. She will not only fly over the stage, but will also glide over the audience. “That alone will be worth the price of admission,” says Duncan Whiting, who will direct the Blenheim Musical Theatre’s production of the ever popular show. Continued on page 2 Dancers Elly Molloy and Shiloh Walsh will be auditioning for parts in the Blenheim Musical Theatre’s production of Mary Poppins.

Well loved musical on the way Continued from page 1 Blenheim Musical Theatre, formerly the Blenheim Operatic Society, is celebrating its centenary next year and Mary Poppins will be their biggestever production, Duncan says. He and production manager Neville Patchett and Robin Boyce, who will manage the stage set, have already started planning. Auditions for the cast of 36 are on this weekend. About 30 children are auditioning tonight for the roles of Michael and Jane Banks. Four children will take turns in the roles. Auditions for the principals and cast also begin tonight and carry on tomorrow. “This will be as professional

Robin Boyce, Duncan Whiting and Neville Patchett.

as anything you would see in London or on Broadway,” Duncan says. “We will have an all-Marlborough cast, with Kevin Moseley as musical director and Jeannie Mark choreographing.”

The Blenheim crew have already had professionals down from Auckland to look at how the flying scenes can be staged. “It will be a bit of magic,” Duncan says. “We couldn’t have done it

without the new theatre,”. “We have to build a huge revolving set, which is the Banks’ house, on top of the stage.” Neville says. Along with the main cast and a full orchestra there will also be an off-stage vocal chorus of at least 12 singers, and a large production crew. Based on P.L. Travers’ beloved books of the same name, Mary Poppins became an immediate hit when it premiered as a movie musical in 1964. Forty years later, Cameron Macintosh created a stage musical that combines elements of the Walt Disney film with material inspired by Travers’ books.

Stephanie honoured with award By Celeste Alexander Former Marlborough Girls’ College student Stephanie Benseman is one of four young New Zealanders to receive the 2017 International Leadership Award. Stephanie, 21, lives in Wellington where she is completing a Bachelor of Commerce in Information Systems, Commercial Law and Management at Victoria University. She also works as the communications and marketing manager at the Young Enterprise Trust, was the co-founding director of graduate recruiting platform Filtr, and is a partner in youth-led investment fund First Cut Ventures. The announcement for the leadership award was made on Wednesday by Youth Minister Nikki Kaye and as part of the award, Stephanie will travel to China next month to take part in the Follow the Footsteps of Rewi Alley Programme in Shenzhen.

Corner Hutcheson & Parker Streets, Blenheim | 03 578 4719

Participants will discuss topics such as innovation, cultural creativity and social enterprise, and meet with leading Chinese technology companies to learn more about the latest innovations, trends and technology developments in China. Stephanie says she is honoured by the award. “I’m incredibly excited and honoured to have the opportunity to attend the trip but more importantly I can’t wait to use the knowledge gained from this experience to help influence entrepreneurial youth in our own country.” This is not the first time she has been acknowledged for her youth leadership. In 2015 Stephanie, at the age of 19, was a finalist in the Women of Influence Awards in the Young Leader category and was a nominee in two categories in the 2017 New Zealander of the Year Jim Bolger presenting Stephanie Benseman with her award. Sisters return to take over family business

By Celeste Alexander From the bright lights of Auckland and Dubai, sisters Tamzin Henderson and Lana Wilson have returned ‘home’ to take over the helm of their father’s business, Henderson’s Ltd. For 18 years their father John Henderson owned and operated the Grove Road business but stepped back six years ago. In that time Tamzin was living and working in Auckland and Lana in Dubai, but after a conversation with John on what to do with the business, they both decided to return. “It was a discussion to see if either of us wanted to do it on our own or if we would together but it was an easy decision to do it together... together is best,” Tamzin says. “Dad’s really happy that the business is staying in the family and it’s neat to have something of our own to be proud of.”

Working in a fishing and chandlery business is nothing new to both women as they had worked their afterschool jobs with their father, and say some of their customers are still the same. “We are still seeing the same people as we did when we were teenagers which is really neat. It’s been going really well since taking over in February, we’ve just been taking some time to learn our way around the shop and the 5700 products in stock,” Tamzin laughs. To celebrate their takeover, Tamzin and Lana will be hosting an open day on Saturday, October 7 where they will have suppliers on hand demonstrating new products as well as giveaways and a sausage sizzle. “The open day will be our chance to introduce ourselves to the public so come along and check out what’s new and exciting at Henderson’s,” Tamzin says.

Woman airlifted A woman in her 20s has been taken to hospital in a serious condition following a single-vehicle crash on SH6, Rai Valley on Wednesday morning, police say. The crash, which happened between Opouri Road and Kokorua Road, is being investigated. The road was closed briefly to allow the helicopter to airlift the patient to hospital.

Blue cod meeting The Ministry for Primary Industries is holding a consultation meeting on a potential strategy for the Marlborough Sounds blue cod fishery in Blenheim next month. The meeting on September 4 from 5pm until 7pm is at the Marlborough Convention Centre.

Just hang up on phone scammers: Police By Cathie Bell People need to just hang up on phone scammers, community police officer Russ Smith says. Marlborough residents are still being plagued with phone calls from scammers posing as ‘Microsoft computer technicians’ trying to get access to people’s computers and banking details. Russ says while it has been sug-

gested people could ring an 0800 number to get the Department of Internal Affairs to block the calls, that wasn’t possible. The department handled online scams, not phone ones, he says. “The phone numbers that come up on caller ID generally aren’t correct, they’re not real numbers. “Tracing them is almost impossible. “

Even if they were able to be traced, most of the calls come from third-world countries and even if Interpol was involved, the police organisations were ‘less functional’, he says. “My advice to the public is as soon as you realise you have a scammer on the phone, just hang up. “If they ring back, then just keep hanging up.”

Eighty per cent of the 900 people in a council’s survey are happy to support a 10 cent charge on plastic bags, but 63 per cent will still use them, regardless of the charge, council solid waste manager Alec McNeil says. Constable Russ Smith.

Business inbrief NMIT rated Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology has received a category 1 rating in an external evaluation review by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, one of only seven of the country’s 16 institutes of technology and polytechnics to gain the top rating. “It’s a big deal for NMIT and for the region,” NMIT’s interim chief executive Liam Sloan says. “It shows that qualifications gained at NMIT are credible and are robustly qualityassured. It’s also an important outcome for the industries and organisations who deal with us.”

The company received a gold award in the PlaceMakers Volume/Group Housing up to $450,000 section earlier this month, and became a Gold Reserve National Finalists. They will now be re-judged by the national judging panel to find the National Supreme House of the Year and National Supreme Renovation of the Year, to be announced November 25. Finalists can also win one of the 14 National category awards, as well as separate awards for four lifestyle categories – outdoor living, kitchen, bathroom and sustainability.

Woodbourne Tavern & Motels owners Richard Marlow, Stacey Goodwin and Rowan Ingpen toasting to being a national finalist for ‘Best Country Hotel’.

Woody the best? Woodbourne Tavern up for Best Country Hotel award By Celeste Alexander Renwick’s Woodbourne Tavern & Motels might soon claim the title of being the country’s best country pub. Owners Richard Marlow, Stacey Goodwin and Rowan Ingpen are thrilled to find out they had been named as national finalists in the 2017 Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence. The family-run business will find out if they were successful at the awards dinner at Te Papa in Wellington on October 19. Finalists will be visited by a mystery shopper to ensure what they say on paper is what they do in real life.

The category in which they are finalists in is ‘Best Country Hotel’, and they are up against the Jolly Stockman in Gisborne, and the Theatre Royal Hotel in Kumara. “It’s our first time making the finals which we are pretty excited about, but it’s not actually about us it’s about the community supporting us,” Stacey says. “Yes we might get an award, but for us it’s about showcasing Renwick and that we have some bloody good locals,” Rowan says. “We’re only steering the boat, we are just so thankful for the people who come in... without them we wouldn’t be able to enter

these awards,” he says. The family has been entering the awards since they took over the business in 2010. Part of the entry process is being judged on a range of commercial and operational criteria including staff training, customer service and demonstration of business growth. “I think a big tick for us was the growth we experienced last year. “We’ve had business coaching from our accountant Neil Sinclair who has been great and had a good impact on the business. “Let’s hope we’ve done well enough in all areas to win,” Rowan says.

Event Cinemas buys Top Town By Cathie Bell Cinema chain Event has bought Blenheim’s Top Town cinema. Cinema manager Duncan MacKenzie confirmed the sale, saying it took effect on August 1 for a confidential price. People going to the movies won’t notice much change, he says, but staff will now have more career options as Event is the largest cinema group in Australasia and has a philosophy of promoting from within wherever possible. This purchase is their first in the South Island, Duncan says. “The big thing from our perspective is that it’s a huge show of faith in Marlborough, as this is their first venture into the South Island, which is pretty cool.” The purchase came about after Top Town won best independent cinema last year, he says. “That brought us to the notice of a lot of people. That was the starting point.” Duncan says he is staying on until mid-October, but after that will be concentrating on his own events management company.

Top Town Cinema has been sold to Event.

Ageing Positively Liz Anderson is the kind of woman that any volunteer-based organisation would grab with glee. She had a background in banking before running the office for a local family business, had her own family, then worked in broking and insurance in managerial roles. That’s a package of skills that’s in very high demand. Little surprise that Liz is also very active in the community. She was one of those who established the Beavertown Lioness Club, she’s held every board position at the Stoke Lions Club and she’s a past zone chairman of Lions Nelson. Into that busy life she has also squeezed eight years’ service as a Hospice shop volunteer and, for the last decade, she has served on the committee of Alzheimers Marlborough, an officeholder and a valuable member of the fundraising team responsible for the new facilities now available to support Marlborough’s dementia sufferers.

Liz is also a celebrant. Now in her late 60s, she still officiates at weddings but even more often is called on as a funeral celebrant. Having had her own brush with death a decade ago, Liz has a positive outlook. “If you have faith, hope, love and the blessings of good friends and family, you will get through whatever challenges life brings. Your faith will light your path, hope will keep you strong, the love you give to others will bring you joy and your friendships will remind you of what is important in life.”

From left; Denise Green (Regional Co-ordinator for Fostering Kids), Christine Campbell (Open Home Foundation), Kaye McDonald (Oranga Tamariki), Anne Best and John Leggett, Aimee North and Sharon Hunt (Marlborough Fostering Kids Association.) Mayor John Leggett and Mayoress Anne Best recently joined Marlborough families caring for foster children for a mid-winter Christmas party organised by the local arm of the Fostering Kids Association. Fostering Kids is a national charity that provides support, advocacy and training for foster families, kin carers and grandparents caring for their grandchildren. More than 20 families attended. The Mayor said it was good to see local businesses

generously supporting a party for the children and their carers as it recognised the important role that foster families have in our community. “Foster families are providing so much care for children who need them – short term or long term. Caring foster parents are always in demand and I know the Open Home Foundation or Oranga Tamariki would welcome any approaches from families who might be interested in fostering.”

Essons Valley walking track closed –

28 August to 1 September

Council is doing maintenance work at Barnes Dam, one of the water supply sources for Picton and Waikawa, from 28 August. A helicopter will take equipment to and from the dam, with loads suspended beneath the helicopter while in transit. During the period Monday 28 August to Friday 1 September, when the helicopter is being used, the walking track from Essons Valley to both Barnes Dam and Humphreys Dam will be closed for public safety. Signage will be erected at the track entering Essons Valley, and also at the start of the walkways. Maintenance is expected to take three weeks, with the helicopter movements during the first week only. The work includes draining and cleaning the dam, installing equipment and completing a structural survey. If everything goes to plan, the track will re-open by 5.00pm on Friday 1 September.

Free boating course –

get safe for summer on the water

New to boating or just need to brush up in your skills? Our free Boating Safety Workshop in Picton this Saturday can still accept a few more people. It’s a chance for couples and families to learn what they need to know to stay safe out on the water and, even for long-time sailors, it’s a worthwhile way of refreshing skills and getting an update on maritime rule changes and the latest safety gear. No prior knowledge or expertise is necessary; lunch is provided and there’s no test at the end of it all but the workshop is a good stepping stone to further training or more formal skipper or boatmaster courses. Harbourmaster Luke Grogan says the workshops have been run since last Labour Weekend and the feedback is really positive – 189 people have attended the courses which are also supported by Maritime New Zealand and Coastguard Boating Education. • Next course Saturday, 26 August, 9am-3.30pm, contact the Harbourmaster, ph 520 7400.

The Sun K-mart Blenheim Congratulations Phil Robinson for your innovation in getting K-mart here! Let’s trust the council will respond positively to your application...praying!

Supermarket carparks I agree supermarket carparks are in need of a tidy up.

Wye bridge I was thinking why don’t the trucks go through the ford at the Wye bridge? Maybe less accidents or put traffic lights at the bridge.

Accommodation I hope the social welfare accommodation is going to be smoke and drug free and regularly checked.

No balloons, thanks

Water costs

I hope the colleges are planning an alternative to the balloon release for this year, that doesn’t have a negative effect on our environment. What about each student plants a tree, or float flowers down the Taylor river like in Christchurch? I’m sure the creative, environmentally conscious students will have a range of ideas.

Suggest the Labour candidate checks her figures on proposed water costs to the wine industry. She better check on amounts of water used by wineries. Taxing water use does not stop the pollution of waterways. eg city drainage comes to mind.

Depression It’s good to see depression talked about in the media. Don’t suffer alone, reach out for the help available. Keep believing you will get well even if recovery seems slow. Each day brings a little more sunshine and a little less rain until you emerge wiser, stronger and with greater compassion.

Water tax Easy solution ban exports of water, don’t open a can of worms.

Thank you To the wonderful person who handed in my eftpos card, a big thank you. I am very grateful that there are still honest people around.

Great news!

Shopping in town

Great news! Now word has it that a Spotlight store is heading to Phil Robinson’s shopping complex at Westwood, joining K-mart. Blenheim is finally a shopping mecca.

I shop at Bunnings, the Warehouse, Mitre 10, and I will shop at K-mart, but i still shop in town. If I like what you have in your shops I will still go into town. Thats not going to change, for a lot of people, don’t panic.

Car parks around town Went to town other day. First time this year and looked down Market Street, not many folk around today, it was a nice day to be out, strolled to other end of town and came back through car park off Wynen Street, it was full but there were not that many folk in town? I was told people who work in town all park for free, finally the council’s not being a big bully.

Re: Whitebait season You made some good points there and I agree. You however said that the camper van brigade buy their spot on the river when in actual fact they don’t. I went in and checked with council and they park for free for the whole season. Maybe there should be a charge like a DOC camping ground to cover the costs of the people checking on the campers.

Free parking The CBD would be more user-friendly if there was time-limited parking instead of moneyhungry meters. We appreciate free parking provided by shops such as Warehouse and will do so at the proposed K-mart. The cost of parking is an obstacle to spending time and money in the CBD. Instead of grumbling about what may happen to shops in town, proactive decisions need to be taken to attract shoppers!

Roundabouts Now we have a new issue at Spring Creek, they’ve miscalculated distances, no room for large vehicle manoeuvring? And the one near New World, many avoid it as it’s dangerous, honestly, whoever decides these things....take a re-cap on your thinking.

txt talk of the week Great work To all you ladies and gentlemen working on the highway between Picton and Christchurch, what a fantastic job you are all doing! Well done, you do us proud.

Number 13 New streets having no number 13...how ridiculous. What next?

Road needs fixing The road from Blenheim to Nelson needs its potholes fixed, I’m scared I will end up in China!

Roleen’s hair is going, going... gone By Celeste Alexander Years of growing and only minutes to shave off, local woman Roleen Claassens sat in hysterics as she had her head shaved for a good cause. Roleen shaved her hair off on Tuesday to raise awareness and funds for Hope Walk. Aaron Nott of Scissorsaurusrex donated his time for the shave off which was watched on by Roleen’s friends and family. Although nervous at the beginning, Roleen laughed and smiled through the process and commented on how she was enjoying her natural grey. “It’s so liberating... getting ready in the morning won’t take a lot of time now,” she jokes. Donations have been coming in from supporters, with all money benefiting the Hope Walk event on September 16, organised by Bary Neal. Mark has fond memories of the great Colin Meads By Bill McElhinney “He was just a bloody good bugger!” That’s how Blenheim accountant Mark Peters sums up rugby legend Colin Meads, who died on Sunday morning, aged 81, after a battle with cancer. Mark served on the New Zealand Rugby Union from 2002 to 2010 and got to know Colin during this time. Mark then became a trustee on the New Zealand Rugby Foundation. “The foundation looks after our VIPs – very injured players,” Mark says. “We look to support them financially, emotionally. And Colin was the Foundation’s patron.” Mark once spent two weeks touring the Far North with Colin and his wife Verna as they did fundraising events for the Foun-

dation. “Colin was very generous – he never said no to people,” Mark says. “He was always available to talk to people, to sign things for fundraising auctions. “We would take some of the injured players to the Wellington Sevens and Colin would come along and spend time with them. “He could always be found yarning away with them, taking personal interest in them and their families and carers. He made each one feel like the most important person in the room. “He was proud to be a New Zealander, proud to be giving back to New Zealand rugby. But at the same time I don’t think he knew how really great and famous he was.” As well as supporting injured rugby players, Colin also gave his time to organisations such as the IHC and the Crippled Children’s Society. The last post played for Bert By Celeste Alexander The patriach of the Collett family, Albert (Bert) Collett passed away peacefully last Wednesday aged 95, leaving behind a legacy that won’t be forgotten by those who knew and loved him. In a moving speech delivered at his funeral on Monday, family described him as a ‘passionate family man who took pride and delight watching his family grow’. “His generosity to his friends and family was outstanding. He was a kind, caring and loving family man with a wicked sense of humour, and his leg-pulling exploits were legendary with the family.” During his service family, friends and members of the Marlborough Returned and Services’ Association laid poppies on the casket, remembering his service during the Second World War as an engineer and supplies transporter from behind the front lines. At the age of 20 Bert enlisted for military service in the New Zealand Army. He trained in Egypt and Northern Italy before being handpicked to work with the engineers. The captain of his battalion was former Prime Minister Sir Robert Muldoon. Bert and his fellow engineers were responsible for building bridges, transporting supplies and repairing holes in runways. After five years of service in Italy and Germany, Bert returned home to Marlborough. He went on to work in the transport industry for 20 years, then later he and his wife Lily

became pioneers in the local garlic growing industry. As one family member says; “The mighty totara has fallen. Bert, you have served your country and your family and you did it well... Rest in peace.”

An artist’s impression of the winery where VinWizard’s technology is being installed.

Technology sale to premium Chinese wine region By Cathie Bell A Marlborough-based wine technology company has made a significant sale into one of the world’s newest and largest wine regions. VinWizard is a winery control system with tank temperature and pumpover control being the first stage. Last week, the company made its first sale into the Chinese market. Company spokesman Bob Richards says the company’s first installation in China is for the ‘substantial’ Pigeon Hill winery in Ningxia, in China’s north-west. Ningxia is China’s premium wine-growing region, focussed on Bordeaux-blends of red wine which are cabernet sauvignon and merlotbased. Bob says the winery which has bought VinWizard’s

Bob Richards, from VinWizard.

technology has 247 tanks in total. He declined to say how much the sale is worth because of commercial sensitivity, but says it is a ‘signifi-

cant’ first step in China. VinWizard is one of the Marlborough Research Centre’s early members of the Marlborough Food and Beverage Initiative, or mFBI. Centre chief executive Gerald Hope says the company’s success is the product of years of hard work. A Marlborough business delegation visiting Ningxia in 2015 included VinWizard and the centre. It ties in well with the centre’s Premium Foods programme into Tianjin, and with the Marlborough District Council’s establishment of a sister-region arrangement with Ningxia. That arrangement is to be signed formally between Ningxia governor Xian Hui and Marlborough mayor John Leggett next month.

Bank closes to volunteer for a day By Celeste Alexander BNZ Blenheim branch staff swapped banking for volunteer work on Wednesday, as part of its ‘Closed for Good’ annual project. For around five years the branch has closed its doors for one day so staff can head out into the community and donate their time and expertises. One group, Teresa Hodgkinson, Donna

Darlington and Richard Vercoe, spent the day at the Riding for Disabled Marlborough, brainstorming ideas for a marketing plan they are putting together. Closed for Good project leader Donna Darlington says their contribution to provide a marketing plan to RDA to help with fundraising. The RDA hope to get sponsors for each of their horses which cost around $4000

a year to keep, so having the BNZ staff help with marketing will be ‘a huge help’, manager Roslein Wilkes says. “It’s been wonderful having them here and a huge help to our organisation. “Marketing to attract more funding is something we need help with so it’s been good to have their skills and knowledge for a day.”

Boutique hotel Escape to Picton is a finalist in two sections of the Hospitality Association’s awards for excellence. Placing in the top four for two submissions, the boutique hotel in Picton is being considered in the final round of the 2017 awards in Best Hotel and Excellence in Marketing categories, the association says. The next round of the awards includes a visit by judges who may ‘mystery shop’ the finalists, and Juliearna Kavanagh, the head chef and owner of Escape to Picton, says she is up for the challenge. “On behalf of myself and all the staff here at Escape to Picton, we are both delighted and honoured by these nomination,” Juliearna says. “We would like to thank the judges at the Hospitality Association of New Zealand for acknowledging our hard work and dedication to our establishment. “We are truly ecstatic to be nominated in not one but two categories by this prestigious organisation and are excited to wow the judges with the Escape experience!” Hospitality New Zealand chief executive Vicki Lee says the awards for excellence are all about the future of hospitality, the leading edge and ‘given the quality of this year’s entries, the outlook for hospitality is in great hands ... and the bar has been lifted yet again’. Winners will be announced, with a trophy presentation for the Supreme overall winner, at the formal/black tie Lion Awards for Excellence Dinner, to be held at Te Papa in Wellington, on October 19.

Song greets candidates at elderly seminar By Bill McElhinney “Welcome to my world – won’t you come on in!” Kaikoura election candidates looked slightly bemused as elder care worker Wendy Best played the popular song, accompanied by photos of the main political party leaders projected on to a large screen, at St Christopher’s Church Hall in Blenheim yesterday. The occasion was the monthly seminar for people 60 years and over and the four candidates standing for the Kaikoura electorate had been invited to be questioned by the audience of about 65 people. Marlborough mayor John Leggett opened the proceedings and prom-

ised the crowd he would be available afterwards to hear any suggestions or complaints they might have about the Marlborough District Council. “And I’m looking forward to sitting back and hearing what the candidates have to say,” he says. Green Party candidate Richard McCubbin, National Party MP Stuart Smith, Labour Party candidate Jeanette Walker and New Zealand First candidate Jamie Arbuckle were then given a few minutes each to introduce themselves before answering questions from the audience. The candidates will also be at a public meeting on Monday evening in the Wesley Centre, Blenheim, organised by the Marlborough branch of Grey Power.

Ntrance Clinic

Are you someone who faces a daily battle with anxiety, fears and phobias or perhaps you are addicted to sugar, tobacco or over eating? Chris Steadman operates Ntrance Clinic near Blenheim and specialises in hypnotherapy and electropuncture, a safe and relaxing solution for these issues. Using deep relaxation techniques, Chris helps people to ‘take back control’ by reprogramming bad habits and addictions which have accumulated over the years. “With hypnotherapy I’m not taking over the control of anyone’s mind, I’m simply placing them in a state of deep relaxation, helped by electrotherapy, so I can talk directly to their subconscious. “The therapy is extremely effective for smoking, overeating and weight issues right through to anxiety. The testimonials I receive from my clients are often staggering... they normally notice results almost immediately after their first session and they are able to make positive changes,” Chris says. One of her services is the Virtual Gastric Banding therapy. People find long lerm solutions to their weight problems with this non-surgical technique that uses hypnosis to ‘retrain’ their minds to be satisfied with smaller food portions. “By speaking to the subconsious I am able to convince the person that their stomach is full after a smaller helping. Their whole attitude towards food changes as they regain control over cravings such as sugar, crisps and other snacks, and replace these with small, healthy meals. “I believe my therapy is greatly assisted

by my use of electrotherapy. This calms the mind and allows my suggestions to penetrate deeper into the subconscious,” she says. Chris also uses modern, painless, acupuncture techniques with her hypnosis to help people to give up their tobacco addiction. She says that within an hour or so, it can help people to give up smoking by dramatically reducing the withdrawal symptoms, urges and cravings. “I know this works because I have experienced it first hand. Using this combination of procedures, I was treated for tobacco addiction 30 years ago and within an hour of leaving the clinic it was clear that it had been 100 percent successful. I never again touched a cigarette let alone longed for one,” she says. Anxiety, fears and phobias are also treated in the same way, helping people to take back control of their lives. Here are what some of Chris’s clients have had to say: “I can’t believe how easy it was. Any cravings, if you can call them that, got easier everyday. I haven’t touched a cigarette since I saw Chris.” “I was treated for overeating and I now feel like I’m free. I’ve taken back control of my food habits and in the process I’ve lost weight and feel energised, happier and more positive.” “I felt so relaxed and more in control of my anxiety. I would like to share my success with others because honestly, it’s been life changing.” “Not once did I feel the urge to indulge in sugary products. It wasn’t a case of trying not to give in to my sugar addiction, I simply had no interest anymore.”

Q A Q A Q A

My ideal day is spent.... Tearing through the forest in a rally car, which is what I’ll be doing on September 2 as co-driver in my first ever full-on rally. One of my best holidays was... My recent family holiday to Rarotonga and Aitutaki. One thing on my bucket list is.... To travel to Italy and sample local cuisine as I share my mother’s passion for food and cooking.

Q A Q A Q A

If I could, I would....

Compete in the WRC as a works team driver. What’s your favourite meal? Fresh Mahi Mahi from the Muri markets in Rarotonga.

My guilty TV pleasure is .....

Top Gear and pretty much everything on Discovery Turbo.

Q A Q A Q A

My parents used to say...

Stop playing with your cars and go to bed!

The keys to happiness are...

Doing the things in life that you love. Who would you love to share a meal with and why? Hayden Paddon, John Kennard , Ari Vatanen, Jeremy Clarkson and Sir Peter Blake are are my childhood heroes.

Tots turn out to say thanks to Ethel By Bill McElhinney Ethel Smith will be 95 this Christmas but she would rather give than get. Ethel, a resident at Ashwood Park Retirement Village in Blenheim, has been knitting dolls’ clothes and giving them to children who attend the Springlands ABC Blenheim Childcare Centre. Ethel’s daughter-in-law, Jenny Smith, works at ABC and on Wednesday Jenny and a group of children visited Ashwood to say thanks to Ethel. Some of the little girls bought their dolls, wearing Ethel’s knitted garments. The children entertained residents with a selection of songs before presenting Ethel with a card and bunches of daffodils. They then planted a flax bush in the Ashwood grounds, a gift to mark the ABC Centre’s 21st birthday.

Children from ABC Childcare Centre say a big thank you to Ashwood Park resident Ethel Smith, who has been knitting clothes for their dolls.

Brides wanted for show By Celeste Alexander “Brides, where are your entries for this year’s Bride of the Year Show?” Noeline Stewart, convenor for the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show is appealing for any last minute bride entries to be made as soon as possible, as the countdown has officially begun. The show will be held on Friday, September 29 at the Clubs of Marlborough main hall. Brides who were married between July 23, 2016 and September 4, 2017 are invited to enter, and with spaces still available organisers are eager to hear from them. “It’s such a fun opportunity for brides to put on their dresses again and enjoy a relaxing night. You never know, you might even win one of the fantastic prizes that will be up for grabs,” Noeline says. There will be prizes for first, second, third,

Mrs Photogenic, Mrs Personality and Lucky Bride to name a few. Spot prizes are also handed out to the crowd throughout the night. To enter, brides only need to fill in an application form which includes details of their gowns, venues and any memorable stories from the day. The show committee are on hand to help with the applications if needed, and the cost to enter is only $20 per bride. Brides can enter by emailing bblbrideoftheyear@gmail.com and entries close September 20. Tickets for the show will be going on sale next week, so if brides are wanting their family and friends to attend they must get in their applications to secure their spot, Noeline says. As it is a fundraising event, proceeds from the show will be donated to the Bread of Life Trust and Diabetes Marlborough Inc.

Paddon and Kennard ride again Kiwi world rally stars Hayden Paddon and John Kennard are teaming up to tackle this weekend’s Coromandel Rally in the Hyundai NZ i20 AP4+ rally car. It’s the first time Kennard has co-driven for Paddon since Rally Argentina in April and it’s also the first time Paddon has contested the Whitianga-based event. The one-day rally on Saturday 26 August is round four of the Brian Green Property New Zealand Rally Championship. Blenheim-based Kennard says this weekend in Coromandel is really just about getting out and having some fun on a rally again, after the high-stress environment of WRC. “It’ll also be cool to be back in the Hyundai i20 AP4+ with Hayden and certainly a thrill to be back on some of the best rally roads in the world.” Paddon says New Zealand is the best place to rally in the world.

“I’ve never done this rally or these stages before, so it will be a new experience. It looks like a sunny, cold week, so will be a perfect weekend for rallying. “I’m really looking forward the whole event; it will be great to get back in the car with John again, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, the driving, and the good people in our fantastic New Zealand rally community.” This is the first time Paddon has piloted the Paddon Rallysport-run Hyundai NZ i20 AP4+ rally car this year, with David Holder and Job Quantock both competing successfully in the car at the three earlier 2017 NZRC rounds. The one-day Mahindra Goldrush Rally Coromandel sees 56 crews tackle 135 competitive kilometres in seven special stages all over the Coromandel peninsula on forestry and public roads, some of which were last used for rallying on the 1979 International Motogard John Kennard and Hayden Paddon sign autographs. GREAT FATHER’S DAY

GIFT IDEAS

We have heaps of gifts for dad in-store and Bottle-O Gift Cards

Active dads

My dad is special because... What makes your father special? Does he read with you, build forts in the lounge or let you give him a makeover? There are thousands of reasons children of all ages, young and adult, celebrate their fathers each year. Father’s Day is a special day to recognise and celebrate the role fathers play in our life. Whether it’s your dad, step-dad, foster dad or just a special father figure who has helped you along the way, Father’s Day is your chance to say ‘thank you’. Father’s Day is all about making Dad feel special, and letting him know how much you appreciate the role he plays in your life. If you enjoy giving gifts or organising an outing, think of Dad’s favourite things and organise a special gift or outing surrounding that theme. Here are some art and craft ideas to get you started . Sweet tooth dad Make a special sweet tooth basket for Dad with some of his favourite treats. Why not

cook up some fudge, bake a cake, or roast some nuts with maple syrup. Handy man dad Take a plain photo frame and decorate it with nuts, bolts, nails, latches and odds and sods from Dad’s workshop. Use a hot glue gun to secure on all your bits and pieces, and then coat it in a clear varnish to finish off. Put a photo of yourself on the inside, and you’ll have dad’s two favourite things in one place. At the office dad Take a clean tin can and make a great pen caddy for Dad’s office by covering it with photos of you. Start by colour copying your favourite photographs, and then cut them into shapes so only the best bits of the photo are used. Paste the photographs on to the tin can using PVA glue, making sure that each photo overlaps the next one a little bit. Finish by painting a thin layer of PVA right over the top, to hold the photos in place and provide a protective finish.

FATHERS’ DAY

Fathers have a significant impact on their children during their first five years, shaping them into who they will become. A father’s involvement will benefit a child from the day they are born. Early in 2012, Active Dads Marlborough started up as a project to encourage dads to be active in their role as a parent, providing a range of free activities for them and their children. To date, events such as the the visits to the aquarium, kindy gym, kite making and construction fun have provided a positive avenue for dads to spend quality time with their children whilst socialising with other dads. As well as the free events, Active Dads also offer free parent education resources and programmes with special guest speakers such as Pio. This programme is becoming more and more popular. There are now over 500 Marlborough Dads signed up and following on social media. Keen to know more? Active Dads Marlborough offers members e-mail updates, resources and events that are either social, practical or educational. Plus, it’s free to join so to find out more contact Active Dads by phoning 03 578 6491 or email blenheim.office@barnardos.org.nz

Helen Bengerand Ryan Lock with their certificates from a recent speech contest. Photo provided.

Hilarity and wit at speech contest Earlier this week the Sunbelt Speakers, Blenheim’s local chapter of Toastmasters International, held the Club Contests for Humorous Speech and Table Topics. These were held at the Woodbourne Community Centre. With four very capable and entertaining speakers in the Humorous Speech Contest, there were lots of laughs to be had. Helen Benger took first place with her speech ‘The Post Mistresses Luck’ which had everyone laughing with it’s dry wit and reminiscence of her time working in a small post shop in a very quirky

town with live descriptions of both the characters in the town and the events that took place. The Table Topics Contestants set out to answer the question ‘What is the worst piece of advice you’ve been given?’. Rob Besaans took the stance that his father had told him ice skating would be fun, which it was not, and went from there. Rob and Helen will now represent Blenheim at the area level contest on October 8 in Rai Valley. Overall, it was an enthralling day with lots of laugh and entertainment, organisers says.

Stop-go is adding time to trips through Spring Creek By Bill McElhinney Motorists travelling to and from Picton will need to continue to be patient as the final asphalt surfaces are laid at the new Spring Creek roundabout. Rapaura Road was partially closed on Wednesday but is open again, although down to a single lane approaching Ferry Road. Stop-go signs north and south of Spring Creek are slowing traffic as the roundabout work enters its final phases.

At peak times traffic coming from Picton has been backed up almost to the Wairau River bridge north of Spring Creek. One Spring Creek resident took 20 minutes to drive from Grovetown through to Spring Creek from 5.15 on Wednesday night. People travelling through to Picton to catch a ferry would be advised to allow extra time for the journey, especially during peak morning and evening traffic times.

Huge swimming meet on The South Island Swimming Championships are on at the Stadium 2000 this weekend, and the pool will be closed to the public most of the weekend to hold the huge event. More than 200 swimmers from 26 different clubs are attending the threeday event. This year’s champs are the biggest event the pool complex has held.

Sublime to insufferable in 30 minutes history, but the All Blacks failure to be ruthless when they had every opportunity to be so, is a sign this is a new era of the All Blacks. On a side note, Ben Smith and Ryan Crotty are the keys in the backline while Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock are the best locking combination in the world. Take any of those four players out of the team and other nations have a sniff of toppling us. Rest in Peace Pinetree. You were a credit to the mantle of the greatest All Black in history and an even more stellar gentleman off it.

Michelle Chapman, 30 Sponsor – Will Power Electrical Ltd Express Marlborough Reason for participating: “The Fight for Life Ed opportunity has come at a great time for me. I love boxing and for a while had wanted to sign up for a corporate fight, plus I had not long been living in Blenheim so it was a good chance to get involved with something locally and meet new people. “What a great cause Life Ed is! It is a superb programme to encourage the next generation to look after themselves and those around them. “The experience has well exceeded my expectation of making new friends, we train with an awesome bunch of people and I love my ‘boxing family’ – even the Blue team! “So thank you my fellow boxers and our amazing trainers, for me in particular big thanks to Mike, Pete and Dave. Thanks also to my workmates, friends and family for your support and interest in how training is going. Lastly to Will, who I couldn’t have done this without – thank you for being my sponsor and my biggest supporter. “I hope to make you proud on the night!”

Junior rugby finals Moutere’s junior rugby teams continued the success enjoyed this season by their senior counterparts, dominating the finals played last Saturday. Moutere won the Marlborough under-11 and under-12 deciders, as well as the Tasman under-15 final. However, the Harlequins under-13 team beat Moutere in their final. The other Marlborough-based side involved in a Tasman final, Central under-16, lost 27-12 to Motueka High School in that grade’s decider played in Motueka. locations for growing Corn.

The Fresh Name in the Freezer

Being an impact player off the bench is now a specialist position in the team. The All Blacks still have the best starting lineup on the planet by some way but there are some serious cracks in the men riding the pine. Each of those reserves failed to fire in spectacular fashion. Granted, the game was well and truly over as a contest by the time any of them got on the field, but the massive slide in standards and sieve-like defence will be concerning to the coaching staff. Yes, the Wallabies are at a low point in their

The Fresh Name in the Freezer

It’s hard to describe how sublime the first 50 minutes were of the Bledisloe Cup match last weekend. Equally though, the last 30 from the men in black was some of the worst rugby from the national team in the 21st century. Going into the game, I felt Steve Hansen’s men had lost a bit of their all conquering aura after the drawn British Lions series and the leaked four tries in the last half an hour made me feel vindicated in that worry.
