Band gets ready for China

By Cathie Bell The Marlborough District Brass Band is practising hard for what is its largest performance yet – taking part in a Shanghai festival parade in front of a crowd estimated to be in the millions. The band has been invited to be part of this year’s Shanghai Tourism Festival, the only New Zealand band invited to the Chinese city. Next month’s event will see the band parade with more than 20 groups from around the world. Continued on page 2 Denis Teeling leads the brass band in practise.

Band taking on biggest performance yet Continued from page 1 Brass band drum major Denis Teeling has had the band out on weekends marching and playing in Pollard Park, with a full dress rehearsal this Sunday morning at the tennis courts at Marlborough Girls’ College. Denis says while there are ‘still a couple of little things to sort out’ with the band’s performance, he is feeling ‘pretty positive, pretty good’ about the event. “I’m looking forward to it really.” He says it will be the first marching display the band has done for ‘quite some time’, since they stopped doing them at national championships. “It is quite an education for younger players who’ve not done that sort of thing before. They’re doing it quite well.” The first day the band arrives in Shanghai will be “a tough first day’, Denis says as they will have a couple of dress rehearsals to do when they get there. They have come up with a routine

that combines New Zealand tunes with some from Disney and elsewhere that people will recognise, he says. “I think we’ve come up with a unique display, one that shows off New Zealand.” Denis says the preparation for the China trip has been ‘a lot of hard work’, particularly for musical director Kevin Moseley, who has been responsible for fundraising to ensure all the band can afford to travel. “We have had great support from the community and everything, it’s been good.” The Shanghai Tourism Festival opening parade will be held on September 9. Marlborough mayor John Leggett, who is the president of the brass band association, will be in Shanghai to watch the parade on the way back to Marlborough from signing a sister-city agreement in Ningxia, China’s premium winegrowing area in the country’s north-west. Residents band together to fight post plant plan By Bill McElhinney Opposition is mounting to a Marlborough District Council proposal to establish a pyrolysis plant at the Bluegums landfill, not far from the Taylor Pass residential subdivision. Hundreds of residents, concerned about potential health issues and property values, grilled council staff and Mike Henare, from Waste Transformation Ltd, at a public meeting earlier this month. Waste Transformation has partnered with the council to develop the plant to turn chemicallytreated vineyard posts into charcoal. “We weren’t happy with the response we got,” retired builder and Ginko Place resident Alan Hall says, “so we’re taking our opposition to the next level. “The council and Waste Transformation will reflect on the feedback they got from the meeting, but we think the level of investment and agreement between these parties is likely Ginko Place residents Alan Hall and Jenny Halliday will be to result in a resource consent application being lodged for a pyrolysis plant at the landfill.” distributing notices calling for a public meeting.

Over the next few days Alan, assisted by Jenny Halliday, plans to distribute hundreds of notices to households in the surrounding area, about a meeting to be held at the Redwood Community Hall, on the corner of Weld and Cleghorn Streets, at 7.30pm on Thursday, September 7. “The next step is to form an incorporated society,” Alan says. “We will call for nominations to form a committee to determine our direction and case against the proposal.” It is hoped the meeting will agree to a basic membership fee and approve fundraising to finance the costs of opposing any resource consent application. “We may need to employ a lawyer experienced in resource management applications to advise the society and prepare submissions for any resource consent hearing,” Alan says. “We may also need to hire technical specialists to give evidence about our concerns.” Waste Transformation is expected to file a resource consent shortly.

Drama focused on the planet

By Cathie Bell Students from Springlands School are taking to the stage next week to perform songs and dances about what they have learnt during science classes about the environment.

The production ‘There is no Planet B’ is on Tuesday and Wednesday nights next week, with half the school performing the first night and the other half on the second night. Principal Gaylene Beattie says

the children have designed their own dances to celebrate their learning and communicate their messages to their parents. There are dances, singing, and some speaking parts in the drama, she says.

“Sustainability is the central theme.” Deputy principal Dona Ferrier-Ferguson says the production is ‘a huge undertaking’. “Last time we did this was “Maui and the Sun” in 2009, so this is a massive undertaking.”

The 2017 Tonnellerie de Mercurey NZ Young Winemaker of the Year South Island Final was held in Marlborough on Friday with Abigail Maxwell from Babich Wines taking out the title. Kelsey Daniels from VinLink Marlborough came in second with Peter Russell from Framingham Wine Company taking third place. Both Abigail and Kelsey will compete for the ultimate title at the National Final next month against first and second place winners from the North Island Final.

Kind act surprise for Wynen St shoppers By Bill McElhinney Shoppers and retailers in Wynen Street in central Blenheim were surprised and delighted on Friday to find money taped to each of the parking meters in the street. “I think the coins were put there on Thursday evening by a couple of young girls, aged about eight or 10,” Brownies Mattress sales consultant Sacha Foot says.

Each meter had a 20 cent coin taped on it with a note saying: ‘Random act of kindness’. By early Friday afternoon, most of the coins had been used by happy motorists, although one parking person has taken the 20 cent coin and left a dollar coin in its place for some other lucky parker to use. Random Acts of Kind-

ness Day was started in the United States in 1995 and nine years later spread to New Zealand. Random acts of kindness are defined as little things that can turn around someone’s bad day, and can be just about anything, including something as simple as taking a tray of muffins to work or complimenting someone on their appearance.

By Cathie Bell The sun is out, the weather is warming up, and Picton is getting ready for its visitors. The cruise ship season is due to start on October 5. More than 40 cruise ships are scheduled to arrive between then and May 16 next year. Picton Business Group chairman David Hosie says the tidy-up of the town is about building pride in Picton. And the town’s Smart&Connected group is holding a foreshore clean-up on September 10. Picton is looking forward to the summer tourist season, with thousands of cruise ship passengers and interisland ferry passengers scheduled to visit, and State Highway One between Ward and Kaikoura is expected to re-open in December, making it easier for people to travel from Christchurch to the Marlborough Sounds. Last Friday, the Picton Business Group showed Marlborough District Council and Marlborough Roads staff around the central business district, to show them where some improvements could be made. David says the tidy up is an opportunity to showcase the whole of Marlborough. “It colours their opinion about whether

they should come back and visit, not just Marlborough, but the whole of the South Island. “We want to encourage the business owners and the people of Picton to buy into the love of their township, to take ownership of it.” Linda T hompson from Picton Smart&Connected says her group’s spring clean event on September 10 is covering a wide area, starting from the children’s play area on the foreshore and going along Waikawa Road to the marina entrance, up to Nelson Square, and over to Kent Street. “We’re doing the central business district and the outlying streets.” This year, Port Marlborough is getting involved, she says, and it will be cleaning up the marina, with the Waikawa Diving Club cleaning up under the water in the marina as well. “It’s quite a big area. We had about 80 people last year and it might be bigger this year.” This is the third year the clean up event has been held, Linda says. It starts at 9.30am on September 10, until noon, finishing at Mikey’s Bar for a sausage sizzle and prizegiving for those who take part.

Pea project prep By Cathie Bell St Mary’s School Year Six students are among the many primary and secondary school students preparing for next month’s Marlborough Lines Science Fair. Students do projects, either by themselves or as part of their class, and schools put the best projects forward for judging at the fair on September 19, with a public display on September 20. At St Mary’s, room eight students are doing a group project on pea germination and growth rates, to assess how the plants grow when watered by different temperatures. Claudia Gardiner says the plants are watered on Monday, Wednesday, and

Friday with 10 millilitres of water which is either five degrees Celsius, 20 degrees Celsius, or 40 degrees Celsius to see if that affects the plants’ growth rates. The plants are measured every day once they have germinated. Teacher Mel Morris, who is part of the committee organising the science fair, says the students have enjoyed growing the peas and they’ll be planted in the school’s edible garden when the project is finished. Several of the students are also doing experiments at home on their own projects as well, she says. “A lot of primary schools are entering, some do it every year, some every two St Mary’s School pupils Tegan Bayly, Ciara Ryan, Sheena McManaway, Claudia Gardiner, Sammy years.” Vermeer, Shalia Narayan, Luke Holdaway, and Sam Morris with their pea plants.

Two Royal New Zealand Air Force helicopter squadrons will take to the skies in and around Marlborough over the next month to do flying training exercises, with Exercise Blackbird next week and Exercise Bluebird in mid-September. Exercise Blackbird will involve No.3 Squadron NH90 helicopters from RNZAF Base Ohakea to the Dip Flat Camp in Wairau Valley, to practise mountainflying operations and alpine survival training.

“Flying in mountainous terrain is extremely challenging.” detachment commander Squadron Leader Tim Costley says. Exercise Blackbird runs from Monday to Friday, and will be followed closely by Exercise Bluebird, involving similar training for No. 6 Squadron’s Seasprite naval helicopters. That exercise, which runs from 11-22 September, will involve about 50 personnel from the Auckland-based squadron and support units.

I’ve travelled around a bit but I would rather be right here, in Blenheim.

I’m happy being here in New Zealand. It’s a peaceful country with friendly people.

My wife and I were thinking of going to the Philippines but it’s too dangerous. So we’d rather be here.

I want to go to the United States, to the Woodward West skate park in California, and hang out with all the famous people there.

I’ve lived in Australia for 20 years but I’m happy to be back here in New Zealand. It’s the best place.

Letters to the editor

Missed parade Dear Ed, I read with interest in this morning’s Sun (Wed 23) of the Long Tan memorial service held last Friday. For weeks leading up to the service, the RSA news in Clubs Marlborough weekly newsletter mentioned this ceremony, which was to be held at the Cenotaph. On Friday I duly turned up at the Cenotaph, to find nobody there. Thinking it may be held at the Memorial Wall outside the Club, I walked around to see that no one was there either. My first thought was that I had got the date wrong, and after another look at the Cenotaph, I went home. Once more I checked my e-mail, and saw that I had the correct date. I am wondering why, on such a lovely day, the ceremony was held indoors, and why the newsletter never mentioned a change in venue. Perhaps Mr. Capill can explain the change. I feel very sad that I could not convey my expression of

A division of the Viridian Glass Limited Partnership

thanks to the Vietnam Veterans. Grateful ----------------John Capill responds. I am most sorry about ‘Grateful’ missing out on the parade for the Vietnam veterans. The call to hold the parade inside was made the night before as at that point in time the forecast was not good. Every endeavour was made to inform people about the change, a sign was placed at the cenotaph but apparently it was blown over and it was also put on the radio. In hindsight we should have placed a sign at the wall, and also a trip to the club reception counter he would have been directed to the upstairs lounge where the service was held. In replying to this letter we have decided that in future all cancellations will be done in the morning. Once again I am sorry that ‘Grateful’ missed the parade. John Capill

Recreational Fishing Dear Ed, Thanks for your report on the meeting on NZ Initiative’s scheme for reorganising recreational fishing. I don’t think it’s recreational fishing which needs reorganising but the fishing industry what with leaked exposure on fish dumping, misreporting of catches and the attitude of the big companies in over-fishing. The Marlborough scallop crisis is an example. Commercial caused the crisis not recreational. The lack of kahawai compared

to years ago is another case. Commercial purse seiners greedily plundering to send kahawai for crayfish pot bait to Australia. However about NZ Initiative’s meeting, readers might like to know NZI is the re-born again NZ Business Roundtable whose members were in on the state asset sales of the 1980s. I was not convinced by the presenters. Jack Horner Blenheim (abridged)

Cattle disease Dear Ed, I am shivering with anticipation to see just how TBFree/Ospri can move in on this new disease being rapidly spread in Canterbury by stock trucks! I can foresee great big truck traps being dug on all rural roads and the captured bovines being given a shot of 1080 and the drivers given a week’s holiday in Raratonga at Ospri’s expense because of the huge windfall of charitable dollars being made! Imagine if stock trucks could take two trailers! I can foresee several more million being paid to this Charitable Company by us taxpayers and more from the farming fraternity in levies! Ospri is a redundant entity, as New Zealand has been classed worldwide as Tb free for some years, and they are desperate to keep the gravy train rolling! Prove me wrong! Lloyd Hanson Blenheim

Harmony extravaganza for Marlborough The world-famous acapella Westminster Choir from California, in the United States will visit New Zealand in September, with their first stop in Blenheim on September 15th. They will be accompanied by the equally-famous ladies’ quartet, LoveNotes, who have accumulated a long list of achievements. Both the chorus and the quartet are very popular in the United States and Europe. “We are extremely proud and excited to host the triple gold medal winners and holders of the Choir of the World title to present their unique prowess to the public of Marlborough,” Johan du Plessis, president of the Marlborough Sounds Chorus, says. “Last year during the Annual Barber Shop Convention the ASB Theatre Marlborough proved eminently suitable for vocal performances. “The Westminster Chorus and the

LoveNotes Quartet will entertain local music lovers with a harmony extravaganza of unparalleled quality.” Local favourites Ovation of the Marlborough Girls’ College and a joint Marlborough/Nelson chorus will have the honour of sharing the stage with the World Champions. The MC for the concert will be Matt Gifford, celebrity judge for the TV series The Naked Choir. “We can look forward to an evening of harmony celebration like never experienced before in Marlborough,” Johan says. “It’s certainly an event not to be missed, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see live two of the world’s best.” The concert is on at 7.30pm on September 15, and tickets can be purchased at the ASB Theatre Marlborough or online at ticketek. co.nz. Chinese signing Marlborough Mayor John Leggett leaves at the end of the week to sign a formal sister-region agreement with China’s winegrowing region Ningxia. He will also be an official guest at the opening ceremony of the Shanghai Tourism Festival where the Marlborough District Brass Band will perform, in his role as president of the band. During the past 18 months, there have been a series of reciprocal visits, leading to the first Ningxia-based winemaker spending a vintage here, Ningxia students visiting Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ colleges, six Ningxia students enrolling in a viticulture and winemaking degree at NMIT, as well

as two businesses making big sales to Chinese winery customers. John says the next step is to formalise the relationship with a region to region agreement. “We’ve been through the preliminary steps and now we have an understanding of what each region hopes to achieve from this relationship.” The Marlborough delegation will include three members of Marlborough’s Sister City Committee, Alistair Sowman, Lily Stuart and Cathie Bell, along with winemakers Richard O’Donnell and Dave Tyney. Mayoress Anne Best will join the visit at her own expense.

Advocate faces big hurdles Lasike Kula and his wife Aiona have been prominent Pacific Island advocates in Marlborough. But health setbacks have curtailed Lasike’s contributions, as Bill McElhinney discovers.

There are hundreds of Pacific Islanders living in Marlborough, and Lasike Kula has been a mentor for many of them. But recent bouts of ill health have cost him his job and curtailed his ability to work with the people he loves. Lasike comes from Vaini, a town about eight kilometres from the Tongan capital Nuku’alofa. When he left college, he decided to explore becoming a priest in the Catholic Marist order. He spent a year in Wellington then three-and-a-half years at a seminary in Suva, Fiji. However he decided the priesthood was not his calling, so returned to Tonga in 1991 and in 1992 married his wife, Aiona. The couple have three sons and a daughter. Lasike worked in supermarket sales and did voluntary community work with youth before deciding to move to New Zealand in 1998.

“We felt it would be better for our family,” he says. “Better education, better opportunities. “It was a good move, but it was hard at first,” Lasike says. “The weather, the food, the culture – they were all a challenge. But New Zealand feels like home now.”

“I have high hopes for recovery. It’s just all taking time.” Lasike and his family moved to Marlborough where he was employed by the Nelson Marlborough Primary Health Organisation as a Pacific fanau advocate. “There are 1000 Pacific Islanders resident in Marlborough,” Lasike says. “My job was to work alongside new arrivals from the Islands to

help them access housing, health facilities, schooling, doctors, make sure they were immunised, help with translating. It was very busy.” In 2011 Lasike also implemented a PHO initiative where Pacific households were given vegetables to plant in their gardens as a way of learning about their health needs. Lasike was also the chairman of the Marlborough Pacific Trust, which aimed to deliver culturallyappropriate health and social services to Marlborough’s Pacific population. Life was busy but very fulfilling. But in 2014 Lasike became unwell. “I coughed and coughed for four months. I didn’t know it, but I had a heart problem.” He was taken to Wellington Hospital and a faulty heart valve was replaced. But worse was to come. When he came home he collapsed and hit his head on a wooden table. Severe headaches followed and

a few months later he was back in Wellington to have his head opened up and blood clots removed. A second operation was needed a few months later to remove more blood clots. Then in January this year Lasike was rushed to Wellington again for an emergency operation after his left lung filled with fluid and collapsed. All this has taken its toll. Lasike can no longer work, suffers from headaches and dizzy spells and has memory lapses. “I’m not comfortable driving and I have trouble sleeping,” he says. “But my memory is slowly coming back and I have high hopes for recovery. It’s just all taking time.” In the meantime Lasike is doing what he can to remain active and help others. He is a leader of the Tongan group affiliated to St Mary’s Catholic Church in Blenheim and works with Pacific Island youth when he can.

GROVE ROAD The

WHO TO CALL ON looks at local business on our very own Grove Road

New premises for Advanced Electrical Advanced is the right word to use when describing the growth that has occured since Advanced Electrical began in 2007. The business owned by Steve and Nicole Banks has recently moved into its new Grove Road premises after having been run from home. “Our financial advisor suggested we open an office so we found this building on Grove Road which is a great location. We moved in two months ago and it’s been going really well,” Nicole says. Inside the front of the building is a working showroom that demonstrates everything from automation, sound and security through to lighting as well as a large workshop area out back. It’s the ideal space for their growing team and a creative space to display products and services, Nicole says.

For those wanting to ‘experience’ what Advanced Electrical can offer, Steve and Nicole have incorporated a fully automated working showroom into a GJ Gardiner show home on Neville Street. “We are more than happy to take clients through,” she says. Advanced Electrical offers a full electrical design service for new builds, renovations and extensions and commercial projects. The specialist team can sit down with you and discuss exactly what you require, then will design and install to suit your lifestyle now and in the future. “We create designs knowing they will work in the real world and listen to what you want while meeting your budget and offering our experience and advice,” Nicole says.

Light up with new business Richmond Lighting has come to Marlborough with new owners Steve and Nicole Banks. The couple purchased a large electrical company in Nelson in December last year and part of the purchase was Richmond Lighting. Nicole says with Advanced Electrical’s new showroom opening on Grove Road, it was a good opportunity to incorporate a range of lighting.

“It had good suppliers and we felt it complimented what we have here. “The real benefit is that we can supply a large range of lights, and if clients have something in particular they are wanting they can bring in a picture and we can find it. “Before now people were having to travel to purchase or order in lighting,” she says. Richmond Lighting offers everything from LED lighting to pendants lights.

Bikes, dirt and deals Marlborough Motorcycles will be hosting an open day demonstrating a range of Kawasaki bikes next weekend and owner Brendon Wadsworth is inviting the public to attend and get ‘hands on’. ‘Demo in the Dirt’ will be held on Saturday, September 9 at Tommy Dillons property, The

Throne Track on Waihopai Valley Road. Directions will be sign posted along the way. Brendon says Kawasaki New Zealand is sending bikes down for the event that can be ridden for those wanting to try out the different models. On show will be the KLX110 in auto and

manual, the KLX140 for kids and adults as well as the KX65, KX85, KX250F and KX450F. “Those who sign up on the day for one of the bikes will receive a free t-shirt, and there will be plenty of specials across the range,” Brendon says.

“It’s a good opportunity for people to see what the Kawasaki range is like, and if you already have one, to try out the new models.” The event will run from 10am - 3pm and there will be a barbecue running.

WHO TO CALL ON looks at local business on our very own Grove Road

KiwiRail, owner of the Blenheim Railway Station, is currently in the final stages of reaching an agreement with a new tenant for the lease of the building on Grove Road. A spokesperson says ‘it would be premature to comment further at this stage’. It was previously leased by Leanne Harris who operated her business Blenheim Railway Cafe and Ice Creamery at the site.

Marlborough Watercraft owner Pete Walters with some items that would make great Father’s Day gifts.

Get back on the water with Marine & Watercraft As each week passes, boating enthusiasts are getting more and more excited as the arrival of summer means they can get their boats back out on the water. Marine & Watercraft owner Pete Walters says stock for the summer season is beginning to roll in and he is urging boat owners to have their preventative maintenance done as early as possible. “It’s going to get very busy around the Christmas period especially when State Highway One reopens and traffic increases. There are people who have not used their boats for 12 months so we are encouraging people to get maintenance done before launching and finding out there is a problem. “The man at the bottom of the ramp with a boat that won’t run properly is a grumpy one... a lack of maintenance can easily ruin a good day’s fishing or boating so call us to book a service,” he says. Marine & Watercraft even has a field service technician who can come to you for convenience. If it’s not servicing but rather upgrades you are wanting,

Pete says there is a huge range of stock items instore which is growing every week. Last year Marine & Watercraft joined the Boating & Outdoors group which has not only strengthened the business, but enables a ‘huge buying power’. “Essentially it’s a buying and marketing group so we have the opportunity to source good products at good prices and increase our range. “From safety gear through to kayaks for kids, life jackets and outboards, if you need it we have it or can source it,” he says. Whatever your boating and fishing requirements, Marine & Watercraft can deliver top service and pricing on chandlery, boat servicing, jetskis and boats of all sizes. Simply call in and see Pete and his team who will get you back out on the water in no time.
