Bevan Moody’s memory lives on through family

Les Whiteside

Maddison Moody, daughter of Kendra Stewart and the late Bevan Moody. Photo by Mezmerize Photography.

Continued from page 1 Bevan’s partner Kendra Stewart welcomed the arrival of their son on August 20, a much loved new member of the Moody family alongside sister Maddison. While Bevan’s legacy will continue on through his family, they would like to publicly thank the Marlborough community for their support through ‘this difficult time’. Money raised from a recent casino fundraising event which raised over $50,000 will help to fulfill Bevan’s wishes of giving his ‘cubs’ the best future he could, his sister Hayley Moody says. “We know that Bevan wanted to give his cubs the best he could... with him not around now the money donated will help to fulfill those wishes,” she says. One month on from that fundraising

evening Bevan’s family also thanks those who contributed and attended the event. “Our family would like to say a huge thanks. The fundraiser was fantastic with a substantial amount raised for Bear’s little cubs. Thank you to our Waitohi family for organising the fundraisers and also to all the businesses who generously gave donations and the wider community for attending. “We can’t thank everyone enough,” Hayley says. Many beautiful memories have been created in memory of Bevan, including the birth of Jeremiah, all of which the family says they will forever cherish. “We are all doing OK, taking each day as it comes and putting one foot in front of the other it’s all we can do as Bevan’s passing has left a huge whole in all of our lives,” Hayley says.

Carnival fun coming to Renwick By Celeste Alexander You may have seen the carnival themed roadside signs and heard excited chatter between youth about an exciting event coming up this Saturday, Renwick School’s inaugural Twilight Carnival. “What better excuse to dress up in rainbow colours, crazy wigs and watch pyrotechnics... come along for a fantastic, fun community event,” organisers say. The Renwick Community Memorial Hall is undergoing a long overdue refurbishment, so to help raise money it was decided that a ‘Twilight Carnival’ would be a fun way to raise $20,000. There are literally thousands of prizes to be won on the stalls and even more fun to be had with the coin toss, quoits and balloon pop as well as face painting, crazy hair and more. Watch young dancers performing and the highly skilled circus

performers. Try your hand at walking the slack line, pony riding, hula hooping or a selection of bouncy castles. For the adults there’s a winning wheel and silent auction jampacked with around 80 incredible prizes including restaurant vouchers, clothing, sports gear, and more all donated by Marlborough businesses. No carnival would be complete without delicious food. Popcorn, candy floss and hot chips will keep the family happy. Don’t forget Highly Flammable’s grand finale performance,” Sonya Sutherland says. “You can purchase everything using our Carny Cash (which you can buy on the night or prepurchase from the Renwick School office). The Twilight Carnival kicks off at 4.30pm and runs through to 8pm and will go ahead rain or shine.

Hayley Sutherland and Taylor Sutherland are looking forward to the Renwick Carnival this Saturday.

World record attempt By Celeste Alexander Blenheim might soon have bragging rights to a world record if enough people take part in what has been called ‘the most mobility scooters in one place at one time’. Age Concern Marlborough (ACM) has organised the ‘World Record Attempt’ for Friday, September 29 at noon at Market Place in Blenheim. This is the first time this event has been held and was the idea of ACM field worker Catherine Donnolly. “I was on holiday and thinking of ways to create awareness of social isolation for older persons and this popped up. “It will be a fun way to bring people together and celebrate the ‘International Day of Older Persons 2017’,” she says. People of all ages are invited to take part, just as long as they

bring along a mobility scooter for the official count. “Even if you have spare scooters at home, call us at Age Concern and we can arrange a pick up so they can be used for the event,” Catherine says. On the day there will be a Justice of the Peace to do the official count, plus everyone who registers will be counted to ensure an accurate number. Registration is at 11am and those who do will receive an orange flag courtesy of Access Mobility. There will be goody bags and spot prizes. There will be also be entertainment and a free sausage sizzle. “A big thank you to the MDC, Marlborough Violence Intervention Project, Access Mobility, Red Cross, Grey Power and Blenheim Lions,” Catherine says.

Lucky to be alive Two boaties Rescued from Cape Jackson in the Marlborough Sounds are lucky to be alive, senior Search and Rescue officer Mike Roberts says. The pair were plucked off the rocks by helicopter after their launch was wrecked on rocks last week and they spent 11 hours stranded on the beach. They had no radio to call for help. “They ignored safety basics,” Mike says. “Boaties should always have a marine VHF radio and a distress beacon. And they should always wear a lifejacket.”

Mike King in town Well known comedian and speaker Mike King arrived in Blenheim this week to talk to schools and the community as part of ‘Listen to Lara’s Message’ campaign. There is a free community talks tomorrow at the Queen Charlotte College which is for students and the Picton community at 1.30pm, and on Friday a talk for the community at the Clubs of Marlborough main hall from 1.30-2.30pm. There will also be a ‘Listen to Lara’s Message’ team present at each of the talks, including representatives from the Mental Health Hub who will be on hand to provide information and support.

Ricky Shadbolt, Shirley Phillips and Catherine Donnelly are looking forward to the ‘World Record Attempt’.

Letterbox broken, then a new one left behind By Bill McElhinney Did the vandal or vandals have a guilty conscience? That’s the question Howick Road residents Herb and Ngaire Ritchie are asking themselves. “We heard a noise outside about 10.30pm on Saturday night,” Ngaire says, “but we didn’t take a lot of notice.” The next morning they found someone had tried to rip their metal letterbox off its mount. “They must have given it a really good pull,” Ngaire says. “They tore the metal top, but because Herb made such a good job of fixing it on they couldn’t pull the whole thing off.” “But it was well and truly munted,” Herb says. Herb and Ngaire went off to their Sunday service at Cornerstone Church

Ngaire and Herb Ritchie with their letterboxes.

in Wither Road and when they returned home were surprised to find a brand new letterbox, still in its plastic wrapping, sitting at their front door. The couple have had similar vandalism in the past, and one of their neighbours has shifted his letterbox to behind the front fence to better protect it. “But we haven’t had any trouble recently,” Ngaire says. “And when we rang the police they said there hadn’t been any recent vandalism in our area”. “It was an unusual Father’s Day present,” Herb says with a grin. “Now I’ll have to get the old one off and replace it.” If you are the letterbox loosener, don’t be afraid to contact the Ritchies. They’d just like someone to say sorry and they’ll put the whole thing behind them.

Scammers still busy The phone scammers are still out there. Picton woman Brenda Deavin says she got a call recently from someone claiming to be the ‘New Zealand Grants Department.’ “He said I had been selected, along with 389 others, to receive a 50 per cent tax refund,” Brenda says. “I didn’t buy it, but it was different from the recent Microsoft scam, so be aware!” If you get such a call, report it to Scamwatch. By Bill McElhinney Harold, the Life Education Trust giraffe, had a problem this week. He needed to get to Kaikoura, but the road from the Blenheim end is still closed. And Harold is just too tall to get into a plane. But one of the Life Education Trust’s sponsors, Fulton Hogan, has come to the rescue. “We’re driving Harold as far as Clarence in one of our trucks,” Fulton Hogan Marlborough regional manager Tim Glanville says. “Then we’ve arranged for NCTIR (the North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery), the team that are restoring the main highway, to take Harold by helicopter the rest of the way.” Harold doesn’t say much (well he is a giraffe!) but he looked pretty stoked to be getting the ride when the Sun called at the Fulton Hogan Blenheim depot on Monday. “The Kaikoura Suburban School holds its Whale Run every year and Harold always

runs the 2km section with the kids,” Life Education Marlborough teacher Genevieve MacDonald says. “We’re so pleased that Harold will get there for Saturday’s event, and the kids will just love it.” Fulton Hogan and the road recovery team will join forces to get Harold back from Kaikoura. Life Education is a non-profit organisation teaching health education to primary and intermediate school children around New Zealand. Every year the trust reaches over 250,000 children with their mobile classrooms, which are equipped with sight and sound equipment, such as large screens, designed to capture children’s imagination and educate them at the same time. Harold has been part of the teaching since the trust was first started in New Zealand team in 1988 and remains a well known figure for many Kiwi kids.

By Bill McElhinney A warm August has pushed Blenheim into second place in the sunniest town in New Zealand stakes. At the end of July Blenheim was sitting in third position behind Whakatane and Richmond, but Blenheim was the sunniest town in August and is now 32 hours behind Whakatane and 12 hours ahead of Richmond. The August mean temperature was well above average and there were fewer frosts than average, Rob Agnew, from the Marlborough Research Centre, says. This August is now the third warmest August on record for Blenheim for the 86 year period from 1932-2017, with a mean temperature of 10.34 deg. C. The warmest August on record is 2009 with a mean temperature of 10.85.C and the second warmest is 2013 with a mean of 10.77°C. It is very interesting to note how much warmer August has been since the turn of the new millennium, Rob says. Of the 18 years 2000 to 2017, 14

of those years have recorded warmer August mean temperatures than in the period 1932 to 2000. The coldest day was August 4, with a minimum air temperature of minus 1.3 deg. and a ground minimum of minus 4.6. The consequence of warmer winter mean temperatures over recent decades is that Blenheim is continuing to record far fewer frosts than earlier in the century, Rob says. During the winter of 2017, 30 ground frosts were recorded compared with the long-term average of 37.6 from 1986 to 2016. The rainfall total of 65.8mm for August is slightly above the long-term average for August of 62.5 mm (1930-2016). Although August may have felt as if it was a wet month, there was only average rainfall, Rob says. Rain was recorded on 13 days spread throughout August, which probably gave the feeling that it was wet. However, the highest daily rainfall total was only 13.8 mm on August 14.

No, the voting age is about right where it is. We have enough trouble getting young people to vote.

No, 18 is young enough to vote. I don’t think younger people know enough to make an informed choice.

No, don’t drop the voting age. Having more young people voting could really skew results.

Yes, because youth have an opinion that deserves to be heard.

Don’t lower the voting age. Young people need more maturity and life experience before they’re ready to vote.

Dear Ed, What is happening to New Zealand’s society in terms of manners and common courtesy? At Springlands mail centre, I had two rude college girls barge in through a door. As a pensioner of twinkling toes, I was able to step back and avoid a bodily confrontation. Could parents and the school teach teenagers manners? It’s not only teenagers either.

For instance, motorists on Ferry bridge will go against a giveway sign and never indicate thanks to the motorist at the other end of the bridge. Having recently travelled to the United States, I was impressed by the common courtesies of Americans and good behaviour - Don Trump excepted of course. Kiwis should re-learn courtesy and manners. Really? Dear Ed, I attended Marlborough Federated Farmers election meeting at Renwick. Thanks to local Federated Farmers although the acoustics were terrible. I was startled to hear Kaikoura MP National’s Stuart Smith declare in his opening preamble, ‘You should vote for me because I’m good at what I do.” Really? Bearing in mind the ousting of previous MP Colin King, I thought this a bold statement, perhaps better words might be conceited and/or arrogant. I’m undecided and that went a long way to helping me make up my mind. Voters will be the judges. Swinging Voter Blenheim

Charlie Robbins enjoys reading to his pet lamb ‘Delta’. Photo provided.

Springtime friends By Celeste Alexander It’s springtime and no-one is enjoying it more than Havelock youngster Charlie Robbins. The four-year-old has a pet lamb called ‘Delta’ who he would spend all of his time with if he could, his mother Selena says. Delta arrived in the Robbins family on July 8 and was so little that Charlie had her in a box by the fire for two weeks until she was strong enough to live outside. He feeds her every morning before preschool then the moment he gets home at 3.15pm, he’s straight over the fence into the pen to see his lamb.

“He’s there until it’s dark or time for feeding at 5pm. Charlie insists that we stop in the driveway when returning home so that Delta knows he’s home,” Selena says. “On the weekends or his days off from preschool, Charlie and Delta spend nearly all day together. They go walking around the paddocks which he calls going on a journey together.” Charlie’s older brothers Ben and George also have lambs and calves and enjoy doing the feeding and caring themselves. In fact, Selena says this year they paid for their own calves out of their pocket money.

Wendy Giddy and Bary Neal. Bary is organising the HopeWalk suicide awareness/prevention event next month. Photo provided.

Walk in son’s memory In remembrance of those taken by suicide and supporting those who are struggling, a HopeWalk event is taking place in Blenheim on September 16. It’s being organised by local man Bary Neal who talks to reporter Celeste Alexander about losing his son Matt last year.

Let us create a loving tribute to a much loved pet • High quality jade grantite plaque Ask us about our colour ceramic service - prices on request

• 150mm x 100mm • Personal message engraved in silver • Design selection to choose from • Relocatable

• only $60 (incl gst)

On a daily basis Bary struggles to accept the suicide statistics that are plaguing New Zealand, and even more heartbreaking is the fact that his 22-year-old son Matt is one of them. Matt was loved and adored by his parents Bary and Carolyn Jones so when the news came that he had taken his own life last October, it came as a huge shock. “If you had asked me a year ago, I would have said that suicidal people were the ones who had issues with money, relationships, drugs and had no job. Wow, how stupid was I! “My boy had none of these issues, he was a very clever person, passing everything at school and was a very well liked young man with his friends. “He was Marlborough division one footballer of the year in 2015 and good at anything he put his hands to. “So why did he feel he had to

take his own life? That is the question I wish I knew the answer to,” Bary says. It’s Bary’s opinion that males in particular don’t open up and let others know what is ‘eating away at them and causing all the pain deep inside’.

“Never try and go it alone and never be afraid to ask for help. It will be the decision that starts turning your life back around.” “My boy was very good at that, as he was at my house for dinner two days before taking his life and he seemed to have no issues whatsoever from what I could see.

“We played table tennis, joked, talked about many things and he seemed happy. Unfortunately he was very good at hiding his inner struggles from me and from his friends. “As a result I was not able to help or find help for him. That is the one thing I am wanting to change in people and males in particular. “People need to learn to open up more, to ask for help when things get too much,” he says. Since Matt’s death Bary says he has been putting on a brave face despite hurting inside but is determined to increase the awareness of suicide and inspire others to check up on their family and friends. “Be a person who checks up on your family and mates as you have no idea of the good it may be doing. We can all do our bit,” he says. In January, Bary was given the opportunity to organise and run HopeWalk Blenheim, a suicide awareness and prevention cam-

paign, helping to take away the stigma surrounding suicide. It takes place on September 16, starting at Seymour Square at 11am with a 2.7km walk around Blenheim followed by a free sausage sizzle and refreshments for those walking, followed by short talks, songs and skits. There will also be 150 yellow helium balloons released in memory of loved ones lost too soon. “If you have no-one to talk to, or you don’t know who to ask for help, message me through the HopeWalk Blenheim social media page, or call one of the support services,” Bary says. Nelson couple here for healing service

Fiona Fenwick, Jane DIckenson and winemaker Rebecca Wiffen with a winning combination.

Good buy, pork pie! By Bill McElhinney It’s official – Marlborough now has the ultimate Burleigh pie pairing. “After a gruelling yet hugely enjoyable marathon judging session, we have a winner,” Fiona Fenwick says, one of the challenge organisers. The ‘Great Burleigh Pie Pairing Challenge’ was set up by a group of friends keen to have some winter fun. Fiona, Bek Scherp and Belinda Jackson set out to test how the pies best matched with Marlborough beer, wine and cider. “The ultimate overall pairing is Lawson’s Dry Hills Pioneer gewürztraminer 2015 matched with the Burleigh Pork belly pie,” Fiona says. Thirty-nine Marlborough wine, beer and cider producers entered the challenge in what the organisers describe as ‘an incredible show of love for Burleigh pies and marvellous Marlborough wines, beers and ciders.’ “What started as a few friends getting together over a pie and deciding it was about time the perfect tipple was picked to pair with it has grown to something really special in the community.”

The judges carried out a totally blind tasting of all entries and there was official adjudication to ensure fairness all round, Fiona says. “In all my years enjoying pies, I’ve never seen anything like this!” highly regarded wine judge Simon (The Pieman) Nunns says. “The Marlborough wines, beers and ciders submitted are all fantastic in their own right, but they are on the verge of sublime when matched with these iconic pies.” “This has added a whole new dimension to the enjoyment of our pies and we are thrilled with the support,” Jane Dickenson, co-owner of The Burleigh, says. The category winners: Chicken, leek and mushroom: Small and Small Theodore reserve 2016 sauvignon blanc. Jerk chicken: Babich Cowslip Valley 2016 riesling. Vegetarian: Framingham 2016 pinot gris. Mince and English cheddar: Terravin 2012 pinot noir. Steak and blue cheese: Fromm 2015 La Strada syrah. Steak and mushroom: Clos Henri 2013 pinot noir. Steak and bacon: Tempello 2014 pinot noir.

By Bill McElhinney The Order of St Luke, an ecumenical group of people from many different denominations and backgrounds, meets every third Wednesday in the chapel at Wairau Hospital. “We warmly welcome anyone that wants prayer for healing,” Blenheim convenor John Bush says. “The objective is to bring about among Christian denominations, clergy, doctors and other health professionals an increased understanding of spiritual healing,” John says.

THRIFTY THURSDAY Vanessa Evans is the new manager at Port Marlborough Pavilion.

Vanessa back in Picton By Bill McElhinney Vanessa Evans had her wedding reception in the Port Marlborough Pavilion, now she’s managing the Picton sports and community facility. She recently took over from Dale Ashworth, who had run it since it was built in 2013 at Endeavour Park. It’s a homecoming of sorts for Vanessa, who grew up in Blenheim before her family moved to Beeches Bay just out of Picton in her last year at university. Summers were spent working as a kayak guide and in the office for the Marlborough Sounds Adventure Company. After a stint working for Sport Tasman in Blenheim, some OE and seven years in Australia, she and husband Ben and their two young sons were lured back late last year when they bought a share in Seumus’ Irish Bar in the town. She jumped at the chance when the pavilion job came up six months later. “I never ever thought of returning to Marlborough, let alone Picton, that there would be a role in my field that sounded right

up my alley,” Vanessa says. “I had my wedding reception at the pavilion and I knew what an awesome space it was. “I was pretty excited at the opportunity to get an interview after four years at home with the children, although I had been doing the administration, accounts and overseeing for the bar for a year, which I loved.’’ Vanessa has been manager for a couple of months now and is still learning what the diverse job entails. She initially intends focusing on growing membership and marketing the facility which is used by mainly sporting codes in winter but becomes a popular venue for weddings, conferences, parties and dinners in summer. Last year more than 40,000 used the pavilion. Vanessa has a degree in sport and recreation management, is a certified personal trainer and has a bar manager licence, so is well qualified for the job. The pavilion – which is run as an incorporated society – is largely funded by the Marlborough District Council, business sponsorship and community donations.

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this three-time world champion chorus perform live!

other surfaces. They are very sensitive and it’s not smart to clean them with microfiber or even worse – with a wet cloth. One great tip for cleaning these sensitive surfaces is to use coffee filters. They are made of really thin and delicate materials and they are great for cleaning without leaving any scratches or markings on the surface. General tricks Let’s say you want to clean your coffee grinder. There are always those bits of coffee you just can’t get out. Just take a handful of rice grains and add it to the empty grinder. Run it through for some time, and throw away the rice once you’re finished, wipe the grinder off and it’s as good as new.

Softball diamond one of country’s best By Bill McElhinney “This will be the single best softball diamond in New Zealand,” long-time Marlborough softball player and coach Steve Healey says. Steve is standing on the new synthetic turf diamond, part of the $4.8 million development of a sports hub at Lansdowne Park. Softball’s new home has been established on the north side of Lansdowne Park after the stopbank north of the rugby fields and grandstand was excavated and grassed over and the softball dugouts, complete with concrete floor, relocated from softball’s old home at A & P Park. Sub soil drainage has been installed and a combination skin/artificial surface laid. The new backstop fence will be 8 metres high, with a 5 metre high fence down the first baseline past the dugouts.

“We’re a family sport, with grades for all age groups.” The old backstop fence has been removed and will be used for a planned second diamond. Two new flush toilets have been installed near the Central rugby clubrooms. “There will be further developments as we go on,” Marlborough Softball president Vicki Nalder says. “We’ll have some temporary clubrooms and some shade areas. It gets pretty hot down here over summer.” Marlborough softballers have moved around a lot over the years, Steve says. “In the 1970s we played down here at Lansdowne Park. Then after a few seasons we moved to Redwoodtown, to Oliver Park, then back to Lansdowne, then to A & P Park where we’ve been for more than 20 years.” Now the association hopes to settle in to a new home and develop the game. “We’re sort of a minority sport,” Vicki says, “but we have around 500 players and supporters. And we’re also a family sport, with grades for all age groups.” Both Steve and Vicki are pleased with the cooperation and support they have had from the council over recent months. “Jamie Lyall, council property and community facilities manager, and councillor Terry Sloan, parks and reserves, have been great,” they say. They are now looking forward to the completion of the diamond, which should be ready in about another two weeks, and the Marlborough softball muster day at the park on September 23.

Cod fishers can help plan for the future By Bill McElhinney A seasonal ban on blue cod fishing in the Marlborough Sounds came into effect last Friday and runs until December 20. Anyone catching blue cod during this time could face a fine of up to $10,000. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is developing a national blue cod strategy, and to do this wants people to tell them what’s happening with blue cod in their area. “The unique biology of blue cod, together with its popularity, makes it particularly vulnerable to overfishing,” MPI Inshore Fisheries Manager Steve Halley says. “We want to get this strategy right, and to do that we need people to let us know what’s happening in their local blue cod fishery.” Steve says. MPI and recreational and commercial fishing experts, tangata whenua and scientists met at a workshop in early July to begin developing the strategy. They now want the public’s opinion on what the experts have developed and

Bag a bargain By Celeste Alexander Anyone wanting to get rid of baby gear, about to have a baby or just needing clothes for their growing children, the place to be is at the Plunket Baby & Child Gear Sale this Saturday. The event will be held from 9am - 12noon at St Christopher’s Church hall on Weld Street, Blenheim. People wanting to sell their baby gear still have an opportunity to grab one of the remaining tables available for $25. Simply contact Adie Boyce on 03 578 5019 to secure a site. For anyone wanting to go

along and bag a bargain, entry is just a $2 donation to Plunket at the door and each seller will have their items priced. There will also be a Plunket Cafe set up selling homemade goodies. All of the proceeds from the table sites and door entry goes towards supporting the lactation services in Blenheim, community services co-ordinator Sam Dodds says. “Every year Plunket raises $6000 to support these services, so by raising these funds it means that new parents can be seen by the qualified lactation consultant in a timely manner,” she says.

The Ministry for Primary Industries wants blue cod fishers to fill in an online survey to help develop a strategy for managing the fishery.

what people think about their local blue cod fishery. To do this, MPI is holding eight information sessions around the South Island. An information session was held in Blenheim on Monday evening. “It was a great way to get local feedback about what is happening with blue cod in Marlborough,” Steve says. “Our team had good, in-

depth conversations with local fishers to discuss the local blue cod fisheries and to answer their questions about the strategy. “We also have an online survey for people to tell us about their local blue cod fishery. “In the Marlborough region alone, we’ve already had around 200 people complete the online survey. “Whether you’re a recre-

ational fisher, commercial fisher, iwi, or simply interested in blue cod – we want to hear from you,” Steve says. Information gathered will be used to guide the development of potential solutions during a second expert workshop. MPI will then seek wider public feedback on the proposed solutions, prior to the strategy being finalised.
