Families make homes here Continued from page 1 “We love it here,” Arshad says. “The people are very friendly. We have never had any bad experiences as Muslims. Arshad, his wife Saffaraja, four-yearold son Zeeshan and one-year-old daughter Naza, joined other Blenheim Muslims in the Redwoodtown community hall on Saturday to celebrate Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, the second of two Muslim holidays celebrated worldwide each year. After prayers led by the Imam Fawad Shah, who is also a local drug and alcohol counsellor, the group shared breakfast together before heading off to their normal weekend events. Arshad and Saffaraja came to New Zealand from Kerala, a state on India’s tropical Malabar Coast, eight years ago. They went to Invercargill, where Arshad studied business management at Imam Fawad Shah leads the Blenheim Muslim the Southern Institute of Technology. It was very cold but the couple stuck community in prayer.

it out and Arshad took a job managing a Turkish restaurant in the city for four years. After a stint working in Te Anau, they moved to Blenheim, where Arshad manages the Yum Yum kebab shop in George Street. “We like the summer here,” he says. “It’s much more like home.” There are about 13 Muslim families in Blenheim and their numbers are boosted during the winter by about another 80 Muslim vineyard workers. Arshad is deeply saddened every time he reads of another act of terrorism committed by “so-called Muslims. “The Qur’an does not condone extremism,” Arshad says. The Qur’an (Koran) is the central religious text of Islam, which Muslims believe to be a revelation from God. “These things shouldn’t happen,” he says. “There are 1.8 billion Muslims in the world but only a small group of people doing these things.”

Octogenarian relishes volunteer work By Celeste Alexander Retiree Norma Cavanagh thought she was ‘too old’ to volunteer for the St John charity shop when she first approached them, but the team was thrilled to welcome her. Norma, 80, is the third octogenarian to volunteer for the organisation and is in charge of the bric’a brac. She works a full Monday and ‘loves’ being part of the team. “I was walking past the shop one day and decided to call in. I thought they wouldn’t want me because I’m too old but I thought I’d try it. “I wanted to help St John in particular because anyone could be in need of the ambu-

lance and I know the service needs funding. Working here I get to see what the shop contributes which is rewarding,” she says. Norma walks to the shop each week for ‘good exercise’. Household items such as china and dinnerware are checked and handwashed by Norma before being displayed out in the shop for sale. Shop manager Marlene Weatherall says Norma is one of the shop’s ‘treasures’. “Without our lovely volunteers we just couldn’t do what we do. We have a lot of fun and laughs,” she says. Norma adds with a chuckle; “I’m vintage like some of the things we sell here.”

Popular clothes swap returns to centre

Suzanne Hatch, Bridget Lauder and Libby Barnes will be helping organise the popular She Connects clothes swap and shop.

By Bill McElhinney Ladies, fancy a new outfit for next to nothing? Then get along to the Nativity Centre in Alfred Street, Blenheim, on Saturday September 16. There you will find a great selection of women’s clothing, shoes and accessories all available for $1 per item. The popular clothes swap and shop is being run by She Connects, an inter-denominational church based women’s group. The event last year raised around $1100, which was donated to the Marlborough Women’s Refuge. The money raised this year will also go to the refuge. Marlborough women are now being asked to donate items for the swap meet. “We want clothing, shoes and accessories, in good condition please,” Libby says. “Drop them at the Nativity Church office between 9am - 4pm from Monday September 11 to Thursday the 14th.” Those who come along will pay $2 admission and can then sort through the display and take what they want for $1 per item. She Connects is also running a competition which you can enter through their online site. “Tag a friend online and the two of you will be in to win a style makeover on the day of our event by the lovely Jackie Halliday from Dress Code,” Libby says.

“We don’t need more migrants” says Winston By Bill McElhinney Winston Peters certainly knows how to work a crowd. The New Zealand First leader fielded questions from the audience of round 150 people who turned out to a public meeting at the Marlborough Convention Centre on Wednesday. The meeting was opened by Picton businesswoman Margaret McHugh. Winston was then introduced by Kaikoura New Zealand First candidate Jamie Arbuckle, a nd launched into a speech that focused mainly on the number of immigrants that have come

Winston Peters, Jamie Arbuckle, Jessica Bagge and Bruce Partridge.

into the country. “Allowing immigrants to enter New Zealand and live here is fine,”

72 Grove Rd, Blenheim, (03) 578 0569 701 SHW1, RD3 Koromiko

Winston says. “Immigrants with skills we really need bring much to New Zealand. But not

mass immigration which does not work in our best interests. “We don’t need any more

taxi drivers or barbers, and we have brought 10,000 chefs into the country. That’s more chefs than there are restaurants!” Winston says he is not opposed to the Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme which brings hundreds of people to Marlborough to work in the vineyards. However he is also adamant that more must be done to train young New Zealanders. “Key industries vulnerable to labour exploitation must be monitored. “And any immigrant employers caught ripping off workers should face deportation,” Winston says.

Business inbrief

Businesses donate to Lara Glover’s message Helping to bring comedian and speaker Mike King to Blenheim this week, were a number of local businesses who donated their time and services to make it possible. Ace Rentals provided a rental car and had it sign written specially for Mike’s three day speaking visit as part of ‘Lara’s Message’, in memory of Blenheim teenager Lara Glover. Other generous sponsors included BB Signs, Geoffrey T Sowmans Funeral Directors, Chateau Marlborough, Clubs of Marlborough, Marlborough Youth Council and Marlborough Violence Intervention Project.

Caci seeking Blenheim franchisee New Zealand skin treatment and appearance medicine provider, Caci, is still looking to open a clinic in Marlborough but first must find a franchisee. Caci has a goal of opening 50 clinics through NZ and so far has 39. Blenheim is named as one of the remaining locations. An information evening is being held in Blenheim tonight for those who have already expressed interest.

A passion becomes business

By Celeste Alexander “Find the joy in the pieces around you”. This is the inspiration behind Pru Adam’s new business venture, Pru & Co. Pru has turned a passion for upcycling furniture into a business and opened the doors to her new shop on Monday. Working alongside Pru is artist and ‘sidekick’ Wendy Hamilton who shares the same enthusiasm for upcycling. Together they have combined their skills and creativity to produce a number of shabby chic, rustic, retro and contemporary furniture pieces for the showroom which is now open on Grove Road. Pru says the idea began when her daughter’s godmother had a shop which inspired her to ‘do something for myself’.

Pru & Co at 25A Grove Road.

“It’s been a passion I’ve worked on over time. “I met Wendy two years ago and she had a bedroom suite she didn’t like the colour of, so I suggested she paint it.

“It all started to build from there and now we are working side by side,” she says. Pru and Wendy believe their work is ‘something different for Marlborough’. “I think there’s been a gap in the market to showcase upcycled bespoke furniture for the public eye, but you really have to see it for yourself,” Pru says. Pru and Wendy source their furniture from second hand sales, local charity shops and privately, and also commission work for customers. “We give a new lease of life to people’s furniture or pick up pieces ourselves and create something absolutely beautiful and unique,” Wendy says. “The possibilities are endless, so call in and see us at the shop.”

By Celeste Alexander Business networking is a valuable way to attract new customers and tell others about one’s business, as Mag & Turbo Blenheim owner Darrell Bate has found out. Darrell is a member of the Blenheim Business Network that has been established for over a year. “I have found it really successful, had a lot of referrals for a range of things like mechanical work, sets of wheels… a bit of everything. “It’s a good way of extending your business, so anyone thinking of joining a business network I highly recommend it,” he says. The Blenheim Business Network was established by Shane Hendrikz, has around 18 members and is looking for more. Within the network there are members that each represent a profession, but there are still many industries and trades not already covered.

The 18 areas already covered include marketing, automotive, mortgage broker, real estate, alternative medicines, a hypnosis specialist, and a glazier to name a few. “It‘s a group of like minded people and a great way to get business through referrals, by referring yourself as a business of choice,” Darrell says. It’s a similar model to the ‘BNI’ local business network, but with its own point of difference. Members meet once a fortnight, on a Thursday morning at 9am at Speights Ale House. There is a small cost to cover a coffee and scone, and members gets 60 seconds every meeting to talk about their businesses. On a rotational basis, one member also gives a 10 minute presentation to the group. If anyone is interested in finding out more they are encouraged to contact Shane on 021 048 0731. The next meeting will Mag & Turbo Blenheim owner Darrell Bate. File photo. be next Thursday.

Planting along Grovetown School’s creek

Winter warmth for earthquake homes Two truckloads of pine offcuts from Timberlink New Zealand's Blenheim sawmill are going to warm the families living in earthquake-damaged houses on Marlborough’s East Coast. The Council’s earthquake recovery team had trouble finding enough dry firewood for families in the coastal communities to see them through until the warmer weather arrives. Timberlink came forward with the

offer of pine offcuts, gratefully accepted from Timberlink Production Manager Kenny Sherriff by Council’s Earthquake Recovery Manager Dean Heiford. The Australasian timber business earlier donated $5,000 to the Marlborough Mayoral Earthquake fund, set up to provide for the welfare needs of families affected by the quake.

Eltham - Beaver cycleway design gets thumbs-up Last week councillors endorsed the design of the Eltham and Beaver roads cycleway. This follows a community consultation which canvassed a number of design options, and included a public dropin session and letter to local residents. Forty four people gave their feedback in writing or by phone. As a result of the public input, a modified option has been agreed, which retains some car parking outside Whitney Street Primary

School. The 1.5 km cycleway is a north-south route between the Taylor River and the southern part of Blenheim. The partially separated cycleway will provide a safe route for Whitney Street School, Bohally Intermediate and Marlborough Girls' College students. It will also encourage more people to bike to the town centre via the Taylor River Reserve Path. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2018.

It does not currently meet the NZ Drinking Water Standard and may contain bacteria or protozoa that are harmful to human health. Treated water is available at the public tap on the corner of Marama

Students, teachers and whanau at Grovetown School have planted almost 600 native shrubs and trees alongside their school creek. The school is part of the Council-supported Enviroschools programme in Marlborough and a supporter of the Grovetown Lagoon Restoration Project. The school creek flows into the lagoon and the Grovetown Lagoon Trust has a shade house at the school, where native plants are grown and students work alongside Trust volunteers, bagging up the plants for planting at the lagoon. The children want to restore the habitat of their school creek, hoping eventually they’ll have ‘tame’ eels which they’ll be able to feed from the bridge over their creek. More than 6000 Marlborough students now participate in enviro-education with 90% of our schools and all kindergartens now involved in the Enviroschools education which Council helps to deliver.

Elizabeth Street footbridge closed The Elizabeth Street footbridge will be closed for two weeks from 11 September, to replace the water mains pipe which runs beneath it. Local residents’ water supply will not be affected. The water main was damaged by the November 2016 earthquake. Construction is expected to be completed by early October.

A&P pavilion back in use The pavilion at A&P Park is back in use again after earthquake repairs. Structural strengthening plus some rewiring and fire safety measures meant the pavilion was ready by the target date - in time for Marlborough Football’s end of year prize-giving two weeks ago. The building is also set for the bustle leading up to Show Weekend in November when the pavilion becomes headquarters for Marlborough’s A&P Show. However, the 90-year-old showgrounds grandstand, closed since the 2011 earthquakes, has been assessed as unsafe for public use and the cost to bring it up to modern building standards

is prohibitive. Council, in discussions with park users, must now decide whether to seek consent to dismantle it. The A&P Showgrounds were redesignated a recreational reserve, A&P Park, in 1975 and Council is now responsible for management and maintenance.

Protection against biosecurity threats One of Council’s important roles in this district with our valued natural areas and primary production economy is providing protection against biosecurity threats. Marlborough is always facing new biosecurity threats or battling some old ones - marine pests in our coastal waters, invasive plants overtaking our pastoral grasses or others new invasive climbers getting established in the wild. Council has a Regional Pest Management Plan which outlines programmes for new threats (keep them out), those only just starting to take hold (nip them in the bud) or those where ongoing management is feasible. Find more information at: www.marlborough.govt.nz/ search?q=pest+management+plan

Street Address: Phone: 03 520 7400 15 Seymour Street Fax: 03 520 7496 Email: mdc@marlborough.govt.nz Blenheim 7201 New Zealand

Council’s Biosecurity team works in partnership with landowners, other agencies and Crown entities on a wide range of biosecurity issues including; • Controlling high priority pest plants in our district such as Parrot’s feather or Purple loosestrife • Working on joint projects like research into the biological control of wasps • Taking a leadership role in the campaign for the battle against Chilean needle grass • Supporting national biosecurity responses initiated by the Ministry for Primary Industries. • Partnering with neighbouring regions to deal with a common threat like the marine pest Sabella • Checking landowners are meeting their biosecurity responsibilities.

The Sun B.S attempt to save the planet So council give out loads of free eco shopping bags to encourage us to not use plastic shopping bags...but they sell plastic rubbish bags to go into landfill. No other bags to be accepted at roadside collection. Remember the triple layer paper council rubbish bags we used to have? And now the free newspapers are wrapped in plastic and dumped at the rural driveways because the posties lost the contract to deliver into the mail boxes. And while we’re on that subject, why not combine all these free newspapers to one decent read? We’re going backwards not forwards. Load of rubbish. Response: Re newspapers - The Wednesday and Friday Sun are independently owned, not part of Fairfax Australia like all the other papers. The Sun does not wrap its papers in plastic. Yes, its happening, the great southern migration has begun just as local land bankers/ agents predicted. Speaking with a business colleague in Auckland the word is out with the new demographics meaning they are feeling like foreigners in their own country and can do the same business by remote here. Flight costs the only down side for meetings. Here they come folks, cashed up, experienced, educated and ready to invest.

Supermarket carparks Untidy supermarket carparks mmm, okay. Well the main cause of that is untidy people throwing their litter around the carparks. I shop at most of the supermarkets in Blenheim - which one needs the tidy the most? Maybe none of them if you didn’t throw your crap around. Well crap happens guys, were not rubbish bins made for something thats right for putting rubbish into?

What is Air NZ up to?

Roundabouts It might be easier to redesign trucks and trailers as the muppets of Spring Creek have lost the plot.

Homeless I am sick of the government not doing anything for these people. I know a lot of them have kids, but there are a lot of homeless people that don’t want to live in a house. So what’s that they say. You can’t help every one. I feel sorry for them. I would take people into my home and help but my home is not big enough. I just say hello and treat them with respect.

If there’s that many ‘gangs’ (also called groups of friends) or youths at the fast food places, then it’s probably because it is their lunch hour, when senior students (of the Boys’ College, anyway, not sure about MGC) are allowed to go outside of school for lunch.

Who is the Green’s advocate here in Marlborough? Never seen anything around...

A night of glamour and mystery By Celeste Alexander Glamour and mystery will be a huge part of the 2017 Combined Colleges Formal which takes place on September 22 at the Marlborough Convention Centre. The vibe at both the Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ Colleges ahead of the formal is ‘buzzing’ with students making their last minute preparations to their James Bond Casino Royale themed attire, MBC head boy Seth Robinson says. “Now dance practise is over the hype is starting to build. I think everyone is pretty excited,” he says. Asked where the James Bond theme originated, Seth says both colleges collected ideas from students and took the top three. “It was pretty similar between the top three so James Bond was an easy pick... which is great because some of us are avid fans,” he says. The 16-strong organising committee has been busy designing, painting and assembling the decorations which range from golden guns on sticks through to strings of playing cards that students will walk through at the venue. Committee member Fenella Smith says around 470 tickets are expected to sell, with

today being the close off for sales. “Everyone is looking forward to a good night. Here at MGC there’s a lot of excitement and talk of beauty appointments, nails and tans,” she says. On the night students will begin to arrive in their various modes of transport and while not many hints are being given away, there may be some ‘unusual’ transport, Seth says. “I had one student ask if he could arrive sitting on a couch in a digger bucket. I said he may want to talk to the Police about that,” Members of the Combined Colleges 2017 formal, Fenella Smith, Seth Robinson, he laughs. Students are expected to arrive at 7pm to Anaru Anderson and Lina Schoni. begin their ascent up the red carpet, much to the delight of the families and supporters that go along to watch. Inside they will be treated to the James Bond experience, with the Casino Royale movie playing silently in the background and photo - Cash in 25 minutes booths with spy accessories to pose with. - Fixed rates = no surprises “Parents will be able to see these photos as they are uploaded on to our social media - No early payment penalties page ‘2017 Combined Colleges Formal’,” Subject to normal lending criteria ccounts Overdue a Seth says. A formal sit down roll-over dinner is held Credit cards before students head onto the dance floor and LOCALLY OWNED & TRUSTED later in the evening the judging of the ‘King Payday loa ns FOR OVER 18 YEARS and Queen’ of the formal is announced.

Turmeric Latte Powder $19.99 Turmeric Tablets 100 tabs $19.99 Turmeric Plus Liquid 500ml $28.99 Comedian and mental health advocate Mike King (right) spoke to students and the public at Queen Charlotte College in Picton yesterday.

Mike inspires youth By Celeste Alexander Mike King arrived in Blenheim on Wednesday to give a series of talks to the colleges and community on the topic of building resilience in Marlborough’s youth. Mike’s visit was part of ‘Lara’s Message’ after being invited by a group of people led by Jayne Glover, the mother of teenager Lara Glover who died in a car accident earlier this year. Jayne was concerned by the level of online bullying and depression among the youth she had contact with, so it was her wish to have Mike visit to share his own story and inspire ‘resilience’. Yesterday the Sun sat in on his talk at Queen Charlotte College where students and members of the public attended, and it was evident by the emotion in the room that his messages hit home. Mike told his audience that ‘everyone has

problems’ and that it’s normal. “Holding on to those problems, bottling them up... that’s the killer and that’s when bad things happen. “This is causing huge problems among youth and in schools, so it’s up to all of us to create an environment for our friends and family to reach out and ask for help.” A number of students asked questions including, “what is the best way to ask for help?” Mike replied; “Find someone to connect with or better yet, talk to a counsellor. “Counsellors are neutral, they are not going to gossip or repeat what you say to anyone... tell them everything that’s concerning you and let them help you.” Mike will be speaking again today at the main hall of the Clubs of Marlborough. There will be a talk for the community from 1.30-2.30pm and is free to attend.

Local artist captures judge’s eye By Celeste Alexander “Art has the ability to wake us up from the dream we normally live in”. These are the words used by local artist Kylie Fleur when describing the inspiration behind her winning artwork titled ‘The Centering’. Kylie attended the recent Nelson Art Expo where her work attracted the attention of judge Lloyd Harwood, a respected artists from the Nelson Arts Council. She was given the Crowe Horwath Award of Excellence, an

honour she is thrilled with. ‘The Centering’ is a pen and ink on cotton paper piece where Kylie says she used a physical form of meditation to connect to her ‘true artist within’. “To the sound of beautiful music I produce thousands of tiny hand-drawn circles. The result is a finished piece of art which allows the viewer to experience something that compares to watching a naked flame, where one’s busy mind can simply pause and just be with the art, and in that moment nothing else matters,” she says.

Movie premiere moved By Bill McElhinney A major fundraiser next week for Marlborough Age Concern has suffered a slight hiccup at the hands of a major movie distributor. The Blenheim premiere of Victoria and Abdul was to be screened at the Top Town cinema on Wednesday at 6.30pm. However, the overseas distributor of the film told theatre manager Duncan Mackenzie on Monday that the movie could not be screened until September 14, the official release date. “It was a bit of as bombshell,” Duncan says. “This has never

happened before. This directive has stopped all premieres in the southern hemisphere and affected a number of community groups.” “We apologise for this disruption,” says Wendy Inder, chair of Age Concern Marlborough. “This is most unexpected and beyond our control. But we hope those people that have bought tickets can come to the screening on Thursday at 6.30pm. “You can use the same ticket. But if you can’t come on Thursday, refunds will be available from the Age Concern office at the Marlborough Community Centre

until the end of September. “Tickets for the Thursday screening are still available from the cinema and the Age Concern office,” Wendy says. Victoria & Abdul is a BritishAmerican biographical comedy-drama based on the real-life relationship between Queen Victoria and her Indian servant Abdul Karim. The film stars Judi Dench, Ali Fazal, Eddie Izzard, Tim PigottSmith and Adeel Akhtar. “It’s a great movie,” Duncan says. “We hope people will still be able to come and support this Age Concern fundraiser.”

They will arrive in Blenheim next week from the USA for their performance in the ASB Theatre Marlborough on 15th September. “People just love World Champions”, Johan du Plessis, president of the Marlborough Sounds Chorus says. “Whether it’s in athletics, soccer or of course rugby, it’s always a special and memorable occasion to see

World Champions in action. Having won several gold medals on the world stage Westminster and LoveNotes are literally 24 carat World Champions and we are absolutely stoked to be able to see and hear them perform live in our own Theatre.” Expectations of the two groups are exceedingly high. They have plied their craft in main cities in the USA and Europe where they are revered. And now they will add Blenheim to their list! Their program will include guest performances by local favourites Ovation of the Marlborough Girls’ College and a combined

Marlborough/Nelson chorus. “Experts regard the ASB Theatre Marlborough as the best venue for vocal performances in the Southern Hemisphere. That makes this concert so unique, the World Champions performing in the best theatre for vocal performance”, Johan says. “In years to come people in Marlborough will ask ‘Where were you that day when the World Champions performed here in our Theatre?’” Get your tickets now online at ticketek.co.nz or at the ASB Theatre Marlborough.

Pies and dumplings a hit Early in the morning as the town begins to wake, there is a hive of activity at a new cafe on Main Street as tradesmen drop in for their favourite pie and hot coffee. Cafe 50-81 has become quite the popular desination for many locals travelling on Main Street and is ‘nice and busy’ right throughout the day, owners Bruce and Hong Trevett say. “We have quite a strong following from the local trades but also get people from the likes of Havelock and Renwick

who heard we make our own dumplings and pies. “Our coffee is a hit as well. We use Fair Trade coffee from Nelson company Tuatara which is superb. Plus our smoothies and milkshakes are starting to take off,” Bruce says. In the kitchen Hong bakes a variety of pies from scratch, with each recipe having been carefully crafted, taste tested and given the nod of approval from customers. She also produces chinese dumplings onsite which are cooked to order and can be taken

away. Bruce and Hong say they soon intend to sell them wholesale frozen. “Until then we can steam the dumplings and sell them to customers in packs so they can take them home and finish them off in the pan if they prefer,” Bruce says. In addition to the pies, dumplings and cabinet food the cafe also has a lunch menu and an all day breakfast. “We have an asian fusion lunch menu which features vietnamese

and chinese flavours. “The menu is seasonal but right now our vietnamese sticky pork roll, chicken tenders and salad are a hit with customers,” they say. The cafe is open from 6.15am 4pm Monday to Friday and 7am - 2pm on Saturdays. Takeaway or dine in the comfortable and relaxing table area. Outside there is plenty of off-street parking for convenience. “We look forward to seeing you,” Bruce and Hong say.

Q A Q A Q A

My ideal day is spent.... Eating pastries from de Brood’s and spending time with my wife Cara and our boys. One of my best holidays was... Camping up north with Cara and our eldest…was fun for us, maybe not so much for our neighbours with an eleven month old at 5am. One thing on my bucket list is.... Visit the Cameron ‘family’ castle in Lochiel, Scotland.

Q A Q A Q A

If I could, I would....

Take an extended world tour with Cara and the boys. What’s your favourite meal? Currently loving the Lamb Karahi from Mango, and of course a garlic naan too. My guilty TV pleasure is .....

“Forensic Files” on Netflix. Crime fighting, science... love it.

Q A Q A Q A

Spring on the farm Spring is a time when you see newborn lambs prancing about. It’s certainly been a lot of fun for these youngsters who got up close and personal with the birthing and feeding of some newborn lambs in recent weeks.

My parents used to say... “You are by far our favourite child” (there may be some slight exaggeration there). The keys to happiness are... Be grateful, help others, have fun!

Who would you love to share a meal with and why? Everyone who has had a profound impact on my life. It might be a big table, but I wouldn’t be who I am without their support.

The health of the soil is vitality important to the health of our plants and gardens. Poor soil equates to poor crops lacking goodness, flavour and nutritional values. We see it in commercial horticulture and conventional farming. Because of the use of chemical fertilisers and herbicides, soil life has been destroyed and the only reason grass and produce will grow is because it is force fed chemical fertilisers. This makes the plants and grasses unhealthy which encourages pests and diseases, requiring further chemicals. We consumers suffer as the health of our food chain has become so poor that our health suffers. Low immune systems lead to easy to catch colds or diseases and an inability to shake them off and recover quickly. Those of us that grow vegetables and fruit naturally in our home gardens are in better shape to survive in our chemically saturated world. If we care for the soil, replacing nutrients used by plants with natural products to the benefit of the soil life and plants, we will be in good health. About eight years ago I obtained a quantity of freeze dried beneficial microbes, including three types of trichoderma, which you brewed up in a 20 litre container of controlled heated water, plus a special food to breed the microbes over a 24 hour period. When the 24 hours was finished you had a 20 litre bucket of live microbes to distribute

through your garden and into the soil. You took a couple of litres, added it to non-chlorinated water and watered each lot into the garden or sprayed over your plants. While doing all this the penny dropped; I water my gardens when they need it and there is no chlorine in the water. If later on I water the gardens using chlorinated water I am killing all my efforts to put new benefits into the soil. I found for $140 I could obtain a housing with a 10 micron carbon bonded filter inside that I could put on my outdoor tap to remove chlorine in the water. Soon after that a lot of my gardening diseases disappeared, the earthworms returned, the soil improved, the plants were healthy and the world was a better place. Even my dogs stopped drinking dirty puddles of rain water and would again drink what I put in their water bowl, minus the chlorine of course. I also realised a while back that we have beneficial bacteria in our stomach and digestive system and drinking chlorinated water is likely to be harmful to such microbes. When chlorine is introduced into water, it kills pathogenic bacteria. But when it’s introduced into the human body, it destroys our beneficial gut bacteria, where an estimated 70 per cent of our immune system operates. I am told some councils treat sewage with UV to kill pathogens, so why not do the same for our drinking/gardening water? Web site www.gardenews.co.nz

Ferry speed limit stops shoreline damage A decade after speed limits were imposed on ferry traffic in the Marlborough Sounds, a marine biology report says shore life has recovered to the point where monitoring can be scaled back. The Marlborough District Council began the monitoring 20 years ago when concerns were raised about the impact of fast ferries travelling through Tory Channel/Kura Te Au and Queen Charlotte Sound/Totaranui. A navigational bylaw was introduced in 2000 to limit boat speed and the height of vessels’ bow waves to reduce the damage along the shoreline caused by wave action. Now, after two decades, a report presented to council’s environment committee by Dr Kevin Parnell says, at most of the 21 monitoring sites, the results suggest the shoreline erosion has either stabilised or returned to the state it was in before the fast ferries began. In a companion report by marine biologist Rob Davidson, he referred to surveys of the sea life living at the shoreline and in the shallows showing increased numbers of invertebrate species and fewer numbers being cast up onto the shore by wave action. However, regular wave action from today’s ferries appeared to have limited the recovery of some bedrock and cobble sites along the

beaches. “There is no doubt the fast ferries had a negative impact on biological life,” Rob says. “Paua were being washed up onto the shore. It was the biggest adverse effect I had ever seen occurring along every shore exposed to the waves. “Recovery has occurred but the recovery is variable and some places are still not back to their original state. But there is no doubt the bylaw was a big success from a biological viewpoint.” Council coastal scientist Dr Steve Urlich says the report’s findings show that council’s intervention help to save part of the Sounds ecosystem. “The monitoring shows the resilience of the marine environment. Appropriate and far-sighted management can put ecosystems back on the road to recovery. These results are encouraging, but there is much more to do to restore the ecology of the Sounds,” says Steve. Rob has recommended that the shoreline and biological monitoring be reduced to a bi-annual programme, noting also that it was important that it be maintained as there was little long term research on intertidal zones elsewhere in New Zealand.

Auckland have no rugby muscles to flex Auckland’s thumping loss to North Harbour on Sunday has to be the last straw. Once a proud union they suffered one of the most embarrassing losses in their history 57-10. The pride in the blue and white hooped jersey is quickly evaporating and with the Blues struggling for parity in Super Rugby, ques-

tions need to be asked. Gone are the pride filled days of the 1980s when Auckland held the Ranfurly Shield on numerous occasions and a victory was celebrated jubilantly on the final whistle. Sunday was great to watch for a neutral supporter but the age old saying of “When Auckland

rugby is strong, All Black rugby is strong” no longer holds any water. The Auckland schoolboy rugby scene is still strong but player retention and pathways appear to be an issue which no-one can solve. Auckland may produce talented youngsters but the humbling experience of watching the senior team getting pumped on a regular basis

says something is wrong with the province and its focus. Meanwhile, the Canterbury juggernaut continues. That is the powerhouse of rugby and the rest of the country knows it. Everyone loves backing the underdog and so it’s Canterbury who cops the disdain from outside fans once only reserved for Auckland.

America’s Cup ‘Auld Mug’ An early evening event on the Picton foreshore is being arranged to host members of Emirates Team New Zealand and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron who are bringing the ‘Auld Mug’ south. The Queen Charlotte Yacht Club and Picton Smart & Connected are organising a street parade and a formal welcome at the London Quay/ Wellington Street recreation area. The parade will include representation by local sports clubs, schools and businesses that have an association with Emirates Team New Zealand. The event will take place from 6-8pm on Thursday 12 October.

The Queen Charlotte relay is being held on Saturday, September 16. This event is a five-person relay starting at Waitohi Domain, Picton finishing in Havelock outside the Havelock Hotel. The relay was for runners only until 2002 when due to popular demand a walkers grade was introduced. All competitors must be aged 14 or above on race day.

Reason for participating: “For myself it’s a great honour to support the Life Education Trust in this upcoming boxing event. Having two boys I have seen first hand what Harold the giraffe and the mobile classroom does for our youth and I’m a firm believer in putting something back to help support the community. While I have been actively involved in playing and coaching in team sports throughout the years I have found training as an individual competitor very challenging but also very rewarding as we track our progress over the last three months Big thanks to my sponsors Paddy at MD Freighting and Boycie at Marlborough Liquid Waste for their generous support in this event. To coaches Pete, Mike and the rest of the crew for pushing and teaching this old dog a few new tricks for fight night. Looking forward to a great night and a couple cold ones afterwards.”

Karate kids home with medals Blenheim seido karate students returned from a recent Top of the South junior tournament in Nelson with eight medals. “It was an action-packed day with high excitement, drama, passion and some great skills,” head instructor Eric Hughes says. “The marvellous support the children and their parents gave each other, regardless of Dojo, was wonderful and every competitor who was there enjoyed the experience,” Eric says. Over 120 children and teenagers from all over the top of the South Island competed at the seido karate Stoke dojo. “The competition was in shiai (free form), kata (patterns) for all grades and kumite (sparring) for green, brown and black belts,” Eric says. “We were pleased that the Blenheim students came home with eight medals.” Medal winners were: Cheyenne Locke, first in brown belt kata; first in the brown belt Kumite. Ryan Stagg, third in the brown belt kata, first in the brown belt kumite. Ryan Gillman, third in the green belt kata, first in the green belt kumite. Olivia Haddon-Jones, first in the yellow belt kata. Katherine deZwart, third in the blue belt kata.
