No go in snow Winter weather delays deliveries

By Bill McElhinney Wednesday and Fridays mean an early start for young Riversdale resident Diego Adams. Diego delivers The Sun newspaper into the letterboxes of residents in a large part of the Riversdale and Mayfield area. However last week Diego’s delivery was disrupted when snow closed the Lewis Pass and delayed the delivery of the papers, which are printed in Rolleston. Continued on page 2 Diego Adams makes sure Sun readers in the Riversdale and Mayfield area get their papers every week.

Lewis Pass closure causes delays Continued from page 1 About 25 truck drivers spent a night in their vehicles near Springs Junction and the Lewis Pass last Thursday, trapped by a heavy blanket of snow covering the area. Snow had earlier forced the closure of State Highway 7, the fragile alternative highway between Picton and Christchurch, causing headaches for truckies, travellers and businesses. Lewis Pass could not reopen until

Friday morning with the disruption delaying deliveries to towns between Picton and Christchurch. Trucks finally got through later on Friday afternoon and The Sun was delivered on Saturday morning. “I’m usually out first thing in the morning,” Diego says. “I have 740 papers to deliver and I need to get them done before school.” The Sun publishers thank the

many deliverers, including Diego, who do a stellar job even when inconvenienced by the weather and road closure. They are also grateful to Peter, who delivers the bundles of The Sun after they arrive, and the readers who were patient in waiting for The Sun to arrive in their letterboxes. Sue Hamilton, of Foodstuffs, which owns New World, Pak ‘n Save and Four Square, said their

trucks were subject to the same delays as everyone, but stores had enough back-up supplies. “Our deliveries were late getting through,” Ashley Shore from Blenheim New World supermarket says. “We usually get them in the morning, but when the road is closed, the goods don’t get in until later in the day. “We’ll be glad when the main road to Christchurch opens again!”

By Bill McElhinney Bary Neal will never forget the moment the police arrived at his work to tell him his son, Matt, had taken his life. Bary was working at the Anzco meatworks at Riverlands in October last year when he got the news. “It was a huge shock.” “Then once you have absorbed that awful news, you realise you are going to have to go and tell the family – Matt’s sister and brother, his grandparents . . . it affects so many people.” Matt was an avid sportsman who, in 2015, was awarded division one player of the year in Marlborough football for his Blenheim Valley Cobras team. “He loved sport, he loved dancing, he was full of fun,” Bary says. Matt had moved out of his family home, living in Blenheim with some friends and working for Constellation at their Rapaura Drylands winery and vineyards. “I didn’t see a lot of him because he was with his friends, and when he was at home with his mates he was usually pretty happy,” Bary says. “If anything was going on inside, he hid it pretty well.”

Bary and his fiancée Wendy Giddy, who lost her husband two years ago, joined other Blenheim people who had suffered similar losses outside the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 in

Kinross Street on Friday. There, 606 pairs of shoes were laid out, each pair representing a New Zealander lost to suicide in the last year. The shoes were brought to Blenheim

by the national Public Service Association ‘Yes We Care’ campaign. Suicide prevention groups and families and friends who have lost loved ones have lined up shoes in more than 20 towns across New Zealand, Co-ordinator Simon Oosterman says the shoes provide a striking visual reminder of the toll suicide has on communities. “Suicide is preventable,” Simon says. “We need to talk more about how to identify people at risk and support them to get help.” Bary agrees. “We need to get young people to open up more, to talk about what’s bothering them. “We also need more funding for mental health, more mental health workers. “And the government needs to set targets for suicide prevention and set up an inquiry into the number of suicides in this country. We need to do more.” Bary went to Wellington on Sunday, World Suicide Prevention Day, where the shoes were lined up outside Parliament to send a message about suicide prevention to all political parties.

Apprentice named top in region By Celeste Alexander “It was such a shock to win but I am very happy,” carpentry apprentice Olivia Ward says. The 22-year-old from Seddon has been named the Upper South Island Registered Master Builders CARTERS 2017 Apprentice of the Year. “I wasn’t expecting it at all when I first entered, but I’m really proud and so are my family, friends and employer,” she says. This is the first time since 2013 that a female apprentice will be competing in the Apprentice of the Year national final. Olivia trained through the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation and is employed by Hunt Construction. “Working in this industry kind of fell in front of me. I was offered part-time work working on sheds in Seddon which is where it all began. It’s a bit of a random choice of career for

me but I just wish I had this opportunity earlier.” Employer Neil Hunt says Olivia’s win was ‘well deserved’. “I think Olivia far exceeds expectations, she is methodical, professional and a key member of the team” he says. Olivia wins a range of fantastic products and tools, $2,000 to spend at CARTERS, and a spot on an Outward Bound Course. Olivia now competes against winners from the other nine regions at the National competition in Auckland this November. Each finalist has a 45-minute interview with the national judging panel. They will then compete in a practical carpentry challenge, the product of which will be donated to a local charity. The practical challenge is held on November 3 in Auckland and the winner will be announced at an awards dinner that evening.

Recycling opportunity A rural recycling programme is being extended to help clear more chemical containers and drums from rural New Zealand. Agrecovery, a not-for-profit charitable trust provides the service with support from the manufacturers and the Marlborough District Council. Farmers and growers are able to drop off empty (triple rinsed) plastic containers and drums, free of charge, at Seddon or at the transfer station in Blenheim. A third drop-off point is being planned for Blenheim. For those with high volumes, on-farm pick-ups can be arranged.

Band makes impression in Shanghai By Cathie Bell The Marlborough District Brass Band wowed the crowds in one of China’s biggest cities during its performances in the Shanghai Tourism Festival. The hot and humid weather didn’t stop band members from giving it their all, and the spectators were thrilled by the shows, crowding around, taking pictures and video on their phones, high-fiving conductor Kevin Moseley, and cheering. Kevin says band members had been working hard, with long rehearsals and tough weather conditions. The rehearsal on Friday when the band arrived started at 4.30pm and they got back to their hotel at 2.30am. Temperatures are about 30 degrees Celsius with high humidity.

The Marlborough Chamber of Commerce is hosting a lunch with Prime Minister Bill English in Blenheim next week. The event is being held at the Clubs of Marlborough at 12pm next Tuesday. Those wishing to attend are asked to contact the Chamber office by Friday.

Rail freight resumes The first freight services to run again on the rail line between Picton and Christchurch will begin on Friday, just 10 months after Kaikoura’s devastating earthquake, KiwiRail chief executive Peter Reidy says. The first train will run during the day, but after that KiwiRail will be running a limited, low-frequency service at night.

By Bill McElhinney Students at Blenheim schools have been getting first-hand lessons about writing skills this week from visiting New Zealand authors. The Storylines Festival of New Zealand Children’s Writers and Illustrators has been a highlight of the New Zealand literary calendar for more than two decades. The event brings youngsters together with their favourite authors, illustrators, storytellers and performers, all bringing New Zealand books to life. The aim is for pupils of all ages to meet the creators of books they’ve read and enjoyed, learn something about books and publishing, and be inspired to try their own artistic, literary and dramatic efforts.

Authors David Riley and Sue Copsey were visiting Blenheim schools and colleges earlier this week. David writes books for “reluctant boy readers,” and his stories often feature Tongan and Samoan heroes. Sue writes ghost stories with a New Zealand flavour, which are popular with girls, Marlborough Girls’ College librarian Colleen Shipley says. Adults will also get a chance to meet New Zealand authors Apirana Taylor, Gareth Ward, Melinda Szymanik and Juliette MacIver tomorrow at a free event for the public at the Springlands School Hall at 7pm. The visiting authors will be going to three different schools each and then giving a panel talk in the evening.

By Celeste Alexander Organisers of last weekend’s Renwick Twilight Carnival say they are ‘delighted’ with the response and couldn’t believe the numbers that turned out to support the event. “Our committee and wider parents, children and school community volunteers put in an incredible effort to provide a hugely fun, family-friendly night,” Caroline Bowron says. “Highlights for us personally, apart from the great turnout, were the efforts

that went into decorating the stalls and everyone getting into the carnival spirit. The Momentum dancers did a fantastic job and were a real crowd pleaser, and the brilliant Highly Flammable troupe from Wellington provided the wow factor with their fire dance. “We’re still doing our final tally on the money raised, but we’re hopeful of a great result,” she says. Asked what their plans were for next year, Caroline says; “We’ll be tweaking it to make the next event bigger and better!”

Bus stop opens after demand By Cathie Bell The new bus stop at the Blenheim Railway Station for tourists has been officially opened. Deputy mayor Terry Sloan cut the ribbon on the bus stop with Friendship Force member Judith Kerridge, saying the bus stop had been put in after years of lobbying by the Friendship Force. The group, which hosts visitors to the region, had complained

there was no shelter for tourists waiting for buses and has been lobbying the council for years for one to be installed. T he shelter, wh ich cost $300,000, was opened yesterday and has glass screens and wooden seats, as well as a geometric roof. Terry says it will ‘give an impression’ to visitors.

Bennett looking forward to road re-opening By Cathie Bell Deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett is looking forward to the re-opening of State Highway One between Blenheim and Kaikoura. “I want to be the first person to drive it,” she says. With her tourism minister hat on, Paula says Marlborough is doing well, maintaining tourism businesses despite the problems caused by the earthquake. While visitor numbers have dropped slightly, she says that drop could have been

much worse without strong efforts by marketers. Paula was in town yesterday as part of the National Party’s campaign, visiting supermarkets, a school, a resthome, and businesses. She says the election campaign has interested people, much more than previous elections. “People are more engaged and interested.” That will hopefully flow through to higher voting figures, she says.

I found it great, really straight-forward once you have had a go.

It was quite quick and easy to use. I found it was no problem, really.

It’s great. No more queuing up waiting for a librarian to issue the books for you.

I’m a regular library user and I found it really straight-forward, easy to use.

I’ve only used the new check-out once, but it was no problem. The staff are really helpful.

Norm Fowke Glass Flawless concert Congratulations to the staff and pupils of Springlands School. Their concert last week, ‘There is no Planet B’ was flawless. What a wonderful challenge those children presented to the audience. Cherishing our environment, forests, rivers, sea and creatures; warnings of the dire consequences of the current pollution of land, water and air were clearly demonstrated through dance and song. Costumes were gorgeous, lighting, music and backdrops, timing and behaviour were excellent. Adults walked away from this concert with the pleas of child advocates for nature ringing in their ears. These young citizens of tomorrow have their priorities right. Let’s listen to them and do what we can to ensure that they inherit a healthier planet than we now have. Check this out Just been down to the Blenheim library where they’ve put in these new-fangled self check-out stations. I wasn’t too sure about all this technology, but the library staff were wonderful - so helpful! I reckon another couple of goes and I’ll have this system sussed. So who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks! No more queuing up at the counter and I can always have a chat to the librarians if I want. Nice place, nice people. Thanks heaps. Ron Manning Blenheim It’s dead easy to use. It will be great for regular library users like me.

Delivery issues The Sun arrives promptly in my letterbox as if it’s a valued publication. The Express publications however don’t. I have had none, one, three, had them on a Thursday afternoon and a Sunday. They have been thrown down my driveway, on my front lawn, both at the same time, and all over the footpath, irrespective of properties, all the way down the street. It’s now 4.30pm Saturday and there’s no sign of the Saturday Express. Hope I haven’t missed anything! I have rung and complained but there hasn’t been much interest. About as much interest as shown in the delivery of their paper. Yours sincerely Leigh Maddison Blenheim

“LINKING DIET and CANCER”

Qualified Naturopath Rebecca Baylis will discuss the link between cancer and our modern diet and cover the science behind the discovery of CYP1B1, the discovery of Salvestrols and how these unique compounds can be used to our benefit.

Librarian Emily Fredrickson, right, was on hand on Monday to help library user Rebecca Melling use a new self-loan kiosk .

Library users loving the changes By Bill McElhinney Library users and staff are loving the new self-check out kiosks that have been installed at the Marlborough District Library. “I was able to spend 20 minutes helping a lady find some books for her research,” librarian Jane Milne says. “We’re not stuck behind the desk now. We can get out and help library users.” “That was part of the plan,” Marlborough District Libraries manager Glenn Webster says. “No library staff are losing their jobs. But now they have more time to help library visitors with their inquiries.” Customers can use the self-service kiosks to check out items, renew items,

update their account, reserve items, pay fees and charges and print or email receipts. Overdue fines and other library charges can be paid with eftpos. There is a terminal at each kiosk. “The kiosks also accept coins,” Jane says, “and we have plenty of change on hand if people need it.” The four kiosks on the ground floor have taken the place of the circulation desk and there are now smaller help desks available for library users and staff. Setting up the new system took library staff two-and-a-half months. The bar code on each library item was scanned and the information then loaded on to the new identification tags.

“It was a big job,” Glenn says. “There were more than 100,000 items to be fitted with the tags.” Radio-frequency identification (RFID) uses a wireless radio system to transfer data from a tag attached to an object, such as a book, so it can be identified and tracked. The tag contains electronically stored information on a microchip which is read by a scanner. The system helps library staff with time-consuming tasks such as stock takes, locating missing items and checking that items are correctly shelved. The same system will be introduced at the new Picton Library when it opens in mid to late November, Glenn says.

The presenter will discuss local cases of people who have been helped in their fight against cancer using their body’s natural healing mechanism. All cancer sufferers, their friends or family and anyone wanting to minimise the risk of cancer should attend.

OPEN DAY Join us for a FREE TOUR Sunday October 1, 2017

Exciting new tour launches Escape to Marlborough, owned by Juliearna Kavanagh and Warren Lewis, specialises in tours within the Marlborough region and very soon, will launch an even more exciting new tour service. On October 1, their new ‘Hop on Hop off’ tours of the region will take off in what the couple have described as being ‘the first of its kind’ in Marlborough. The Hop on Hop off tour will make Marlborough’s experiences more accessible to locals and visitors alike, and to celebrate the launch, a free day will be held for locals on October 1. “All locals have to do is win free tickets and to go into the draw for these tickets, simply eat at Escape to Picton or visit our Facebook page and share posts to win,” Juliearna says. The initial concept was forged by Juliearna, owner and head chef of Escape to Picton Boutique Hotel. It has been 18 months in the making but she and her partner Warren say they are striving to make these experiences accessible to locals and visitors in Picton and Blenheim. “It’s always been our goal to bring Blenheim people and tourists to Picton and the other way round. I want to see Marlborough prosper and for people to utilise what Marlborough has to offer in every way possible,” she says. How it works: There will be two routes launching, ‘The 8 Wonders of Marlborough’ and ‘The Wine, Beer & Food Tour’. The buses will transport customers to different destinations in Picton, Blenheim, where they can choose to ‘hop off’ or not, for as long as they would like, and ‘hop on’ the next bus. Customers can also swap between the tours.

Escape to Marlborough is thrilled to welcome the following partners as stops along the Hop on Hop off routes: The Vines Village, including Explore Marlborough and Golden Mile Brewing Co. Omaka Aviation Centre, Omaka Classic Cars, Brayshaw Heritage Park, Marlborough Museum (including the Wine Exhibit), Makana Chocolate Factory, The Marlborough Airport, Edwin Fox Museum, E-Ko Tours, Blenheim and Picton i-Sites, plus multiple wineries including Saint Clair, Allan Scott, Highfield TerraVin, Villa Maria, Seresin, Wither Hills, Moa Brewery, Whitehaven and Clubs of Marlborough. Ray and Sandra Welburn and driver Josh Powell prepare to shift the ancient bullock dray.

The dray will be coming back! By Bill McElhinney The ancient bullock dray that has stood outside the Renwick Museum for 50 years has gone. But Renwick residents driving down High Street shouldn’t be alarmed – the dray and its tin bullocks are coming back. “We decided the whole area needed a tidy up,” museum volunteer Sandra Welburn says. Sandra, her husband Ray, and museum president Gwenda Hodson, who is 85, are the team who keep the facility ticking over. The dray was picked up on Friday by Josh Powell, from Tractor Repairs and Spares and a volunteer crew will give it a new lease of life. “We’re also going to do up the area out the front where the dray was situated.” “The interior is also going to get a makeover, Sandra says. “We’ve been given a grant which we will use to paint the interior and Steve Austin from the Marlborough Museum has helped us choose some heritage colours for the job. “We will spend the next month on the project so the museum will be looking really good

by the time summer comes and we get more people passing through.” During the 1840s and 1850s the main means of transporting heavy produce was by bullock and dray. From Blenheim to Renwick by bullock dray was a day’s journey, so the drivers and their teams stopped to water their animals and refresh the drivers. Residents would have been used to the sight of the main street being lined with busy drivers, snorting horses and bellowing bullocks. The museum today showcases the history of Renwick, formerly called Renwicktown, from the early settlers to the start of the wine industry. It is open every day from 9:00am to 5:00pm except Mondays when it is open from 10:00am to 3:00pm with volunteers on hand to help with genealogy, and local history research. The museum also houses the Watson Memorial Library, a unique collection of historical early learning resources begun by Herbert Watson in memory of his wife Olga.

Springlands School pupil Maddison Dowling, 10, reads with Springlands Lifestyle Village resident Vera Cranswick, 96.

Age no barrier at this get-together By Bill McElhinney There are smiles all round at Springlands Lifestyle Village on a Friday when Springlands School pupils come to visit the elderly residents. “It takes us back to the time when we were children,” Vera Cranswick, 96, says with a smile. “It’s part of our kahikatea, or relationship building programme,” teacher Stacey Grainger says. “The children earn the right to take part in the programme, and then get to chose from several different activities. “Visiting the residents here is one of them, and it’s really popular with the children. They love coming over here. “They’re a bit shy at the start, but once they start reading stories with the residents they really get going and enjoy it. “And Springlands turns on afternoon tea for us and the residents. The children go

back to school and tell their friends about the yummy treats they had!” The pupils visit on a Friday afternoon and last Friday’s visit started with a couple of songs with actions: Bad Hair Day and I Am The Earth, a song from the school’s recent production of a show There’s No Planet B. The children also bring their favourite reading book, and then engage the residents in story time. The residents, in turn regale the children with tales of their own childhood, one man recalling the days when he rode a horse to school every day. “The residents love it,” Springlands Lifestyle manager Naomi Mailer says. “The children start off by introducing themselves to the residents and telling them about something they really like. “Then the residents do the same, and they tell children their age as well. It’s a lovely time.”

Vintners Room Restaurant executive chef Damian Oehlrich with freshly picked lemons and herbs from the on-site garden.

Vintners Room Restaurant Vintners Room Restaurant is getting set to launch its new spring menu, and one thing people will recognise is a distinct ‘fresh produce, plant based’ influence. Executive chef Damian Oehlrich is particularly passionate about plant based food and has incorporated it into each of his dishes. “I’m all about encouraging good nutrition and fresh produce, providing a range of options for people to enjoy,” he says. Everything served from the kitchen is made ‘from scratch’ by the team, including the bread, and caters to a good cross section of tastes, Damian says. “We have people come in wanting a homely roast through to a wine matched degustation evening, so we’ve made sure it will appeal to a broad range. “This spring menu will also offer a selection of salads and vegetables which will be packed with flavour, yet be a little unusual and not something you would get somewhere else,” he says. The creativity in each of the dishes is also what makes the Vintners Room Restaurant experience so unique. “I like to be creative so it’s great to have the

freedom to keep the menu interesting. The real hero of this menu is of course the top quality produce that we use. “By using top ingredients we can let the food be the star of the show and create dishes that just blow your mind,” Damian says. Among the fresh produce used, some of it is grown from the onsite garden. “It’s fresh, picked on the spot and used straight away. It’s a real highlight using our own garden produce, it takes the idea of ‘spring fresh’ to a new level,” he says. Vintners Room Restaurant is open seven days to the public for dining.

Sergeant Nick keen to compete in Canada Former Blenheim man Nick Marfell can’t wait to compete again at the Invictus Games. The Invictus Games is the only international adaptive sporting event for wounded, injured and ill active duty and veteran service members. This year’s event, in Toronto, Canada, from September 23-30, will be the largest yet, with 550 ill and injured servicemen and women from 17 allied nations – including 24 from the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) – competing in 12 adaptive sporting events. Nick, a New Zealand Army staff sergeant, grew up in Blenheim. He competed at the 2016 Invictus Games and will compete again this year in golf, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. He lost his hearing while serving in Afghanistan and is now deaf in his right ear. Despite also suffering from a severe form of tinnitus – ringing in the ear –the sudden loss of hearing has not stopped him from continuing to succeed. “Having been introduced to the Invictus Games last year in Orlando in the United States, I certainly wanted to be part of that amazing experience again this year,” Nick says. “With the inclusion of golf at this year’s Games I saw it as an opportunity to set some new goals.” It has been great mixing with the NZDF team and other NZDF comrades, Nick says. “Hearing the experiences of others, their highs and lows, helps put my own struggles into perspective. I have now formed a solid foundation of friends whom I can call on if I ever need help. “The Invictus Games has given me that opportunity back to be part of a team environment. “Mixing with other nations and meeting new inspirational people will be a lifelong memory to cherish.” The games use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate awareness of the physical and psychological injuries sustained by wounded warriors.

New Zealand Army staff sergeant Nick Marfell has set some new goals for the Invictus Games, being held this year in Toronto.

Piano man coming to perform with orchestra British pianist Freddy Kempf performs Pianomania with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in Blenheim next Tuesday. Freddy has chosen six piano works that span more than 300 years of the piano from George Frideric Handel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Frédéric Chopin, Felix Mendelssohn, Sergei Rachmaninov and George Gershwin. Just like his hit 2015 NZSO tour, he will play and conduct the NZSO at the same time. Freddy says he always remembers loving music - and even before he started playing an instrument he was listening to it. “I first wanted to play an instrument at age four - I very clearly stated I wanted to have lessons. And after that it was just my hobby” - and luckily it still is! Freddy also conducts while he plays. “The conducting part

British pianist Freddy Kempf performs with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in Blenheim next week.

is mostly in rehearsal,” he says. “Normally a soloist will have a separate conductor that plans how to use the rehearsal time and what plan to have for the show. I then have to take over this role, where the ‘playing’ part is less important.

“I have to focus on listening to the orchestra and sorting out whatever problems occur. In the concert I’m mostly just playing since by then everyone knows what’s going on.” The excitement of performing comes from the challenge, Freddy says. “We all attempt to play something that is actually incredibly difficult - whether it’s a concerto, a symphony or opera. No-one is ever absolutely sure that nothing will go wrong - so everyone is trying as hard as they can to sense mistakes before they happen, or to play something right that’s never gone right before. “Because of the audience and the occasion, we all know we have only one shot - so that’s where the pressure comes from.” Freddy says he wanted to pick a mixture of his favourite pieces to perform in Pianomania as well as works that made sense

stuck together, that maybe explained a little about the whole idea of piano plus orchestera. “The Handel was the most dramatic work I could find written before Mozart and Beethoven - and happens to be basically the first example of a concerto written in the way that they’ve been written ever since,” Freddy says. “The Mozart is simply sublime. The Chopin is one of my favourite works for piano that is rarely played because the orchestra part is so minor. The Mendelssohn is a work I played as a child, written by Mendelssohn when he was very young, and a very exciting piece. “The Rachmaninov almost everyone recognises, and is one of the most passionate works ever written. The Gershwin is so unique - not a concerto, but one of the most famous works for piano and performed almost more often than anything else.”

Emma urges youngsters By Bill McElhinney While most of her friends are out on a Saturday playing netball, hockey and other team sports, Emma Gardiner is down at the Blenheim Golf Club driving a ball down the fairway. “Grandad got me into it,” Emma says with a grin. “I came down one Saturday to caddy for him, and the next thing I knew, he had signed me up as a club member!” Em ma’s grandad is keen Marlborough golfer Mike Gardiner, and he has been instrumental in getting his granddaughter going in the game. “He got me some clubs,” Emma says, “and then got me out hitting some balls around.” “He gave me some lessons, and when he saw I was interested, he got me some lessons with professional coach Jonti Philipson.” Emma then started playing on club days at the Blenheim Golf Club’s Pollard Park course and recently won a junior trophy ‘which was really exciting,’ she says. She has now entered another junior trophy competition to be played later this month. She has also been gifted a set of clubs from a Blenheim club member who can no longer play. “That was great for Emma,” club president Murray Belk says.

“A set of clubs like that could cost $1000.” Emma is a natural left-hander, but plays her golf right-handed and is currently on a 33.1 handicap. “There aren’t many young people playing golf,” says the Marlborough Girls’ College year nine student. So Emma is launching an initiative to try and get more youngsters interested in the game. She is holding an open day for youngsters at the Pollard Park course at 10am on Sunday, September 24. “They can come along and have a go, just hit some balls,” Emma says. “It will be a fun day with maybe a barbecue and a few sport prizes.” “It was all Emma’s idea,” Murray says. “She suggested it and she’s fronting it. “The club are supporting her, but she’s the one that’s making it happen. Good on her!” And Emma has another goal: she plans to get to the New Zealand Women’s Open golf tournament in Auckland at the end of the month and meet a player who inspires her, Lydia Ko, who won the first-ever Olympic silver medal for women’s golf at the Rio Games last year.

The Sun

Tokomaru on top Picton-based Tokomaru won the Marlborough premier netball title at Stadium 2000 on Sunday afternoon, beating Harlequins 62-55 in the final. “It was a great way to finish,” says Tokomaru coach Alana Cairns, who is bowing out of coaching after 30 years.

Cycling trophy winners Gerard van Antwerpen and Ian Martella took the fastest time and handicap trophies in the Cuddon Cycling Marlborough Van Antwerpen Trophy event at Lower Wairau on Saturday. Conditions were cool and windy for the 41km handicap event which started and finished in Vickerman St and was ridden over three laps of the Lower Wairau circuit.

Harrier event tomorrow

Murray Belk and Emma Gardiner hope youngsters will come down to Pollard Park on September 24 and have a go at golf.

The Marlborough Harrier Club is holding a pack/training run or walk tomorrow leaving from the clubrooms at 6:00 pm. These are situated at Oliver Park on the corner of Weld and Cleghorn Streets. Reflector gear is compulsory. Joggers and walkers regardless of ability are welcome.

Fight for life is an opportunity for me to practice what l preach. If you find something difficult then you should do more of it. I strongly believe this is what helps build resilence and increases self confidence. “Through my role at Family Works as the co-ordinator of the mentoring service and working as a Kiwi Can leader I am all too aware of how important resilience is for children to get through hard times. “When l saw the fight for life ad, I thought

Plus l have always loved a good boxing movie. “Having three boys who have had lessons from the Life Education Trust I feel it is an honour to represent this cause, help them raise money to educate more children and to give something back. Also l want all women to realise they are never too old or weak to try new things. “I would like to thank my sponsor Crown Sheet Metal. All l can say is that l won’t let you down!”
