By Bill McElhinney The biggest Hope Walk in the country took place in Blenheim on Saturday. Nine hundred people gathered in Seymour Square on a sunny spring morning to show their support for families of suicide victims and to help take away the stigma surrounding suicide. Hope Walk biggest in country Continued from page 1 “I’m absolutely over the moon!” organiser Bary Neal says. “We were hoping for about 400 people, but this is incredible. Our slogan is ‘Stronger Together’ and we have certainly come together over this. “The biggest Hope Walk in the country so far was in Christchurch, where 400 people turned up. Blenheim’s more than doubled that number.” The event drew people from all age groups, including a colourful contingent of young recruits from Base Woodbourne. People spoken to all wanted to see

suicide prevention discussed more openly in the community and many expressed concern about resourcing for mental health services. “This issue has touched a lot of people,” Bary says. “The support we’ve got shows what an amazing community we have. New Zealanders really care about this issue.” Bary also felt the level of support might be attributed to the ripple effect in a smaller community. “When someone takes their life, it affects so many people. Family, friends, work mates. We’re closer here and many people are touched by these tragic events. “I hope this gets more people

talking about suicide and suicide prevention. And I hope young people, especially young men, will open up and talk about things that are bothering them. We need to be more open. “I also hope the politicians take notice of the issue. But we don’t want them to just throw more money at it. We need a proper inquiry into suicide prevention. “We need to come up with some proper measures, and then act on them” The 2.7 km walk around Blenheim was followed by a free sausage sizzle and the release of 150 yellow helium balloons in memory of loved

ones lost too soon. The suicide awareness campaign Hope Walk was launched in 2015 by Papakura pastor Joseph Fa’afiu as a way of “breaking the stigma, shame and silence around suicide.” The walks are to remember those taken by suicide and support those who are currently struggling. The movement has grown and a number of walks are taking place around the world this year as the event has grown. There are 19 centres in New Zealand taking part as well as cities in Australia, Canada, USA and Rarotonga.

Reno race results spectacular By Cathie Bell Marlborough’s first entrant in the United State’s National Championship Air Races in Nevada, a Yak-3 called Full Noise, has won the Rookie of the Year title. Pilot and owner Graeme Frew flew seventh fastest in the championships, making an impressive debut and Graeme and his team believe they are the first New Zealanders to take part of the Championship Air Races. “As far as I’m aware there has never been a Kiwi race team ever travel to Reno and

I know there has never been a Kiwi in the Unlimited class,” Graeme says of the category he raced in, open only to aircraft that are more than 2000kg, propeller-driven and piston engine-powered. The plane worked its way up, starting and winning in the Unlimited Bronze category, then Unlimited Silver, before finishing in the Unlimited Gold category, hitting 315.769 miles an hour or 508.181 kilometres an hour, finishing seventh and winning Unlimited Rookie of the Year.

Crash on highway Drivers on the alternate route between Picton and Christchurch were being detoured to Reefton today after State Highway 65 was closed following a serious crash between two trucks. The detour adds another hour-and-ahalf to the journey. A 40-year-old man in a critical condition was flown to Wellington Hospital after the crash. Chamber president Nita van Grinsven says The Education Ministry said this is the ‘leading site’ for the co-located colleges, a vineyard on the racecourse is a better colleges site. Alabama Road.

Fuel for Marlborough The break in the pipeline delivering fuel to Auckland will not affect Marlborough and other parts of the country, fuel distributors say. Fuel is still being manufactured and shipped to ports around New Zealand.

Chamber wants racecourse as colleges’ site By Cathie Bell Marlborough Chamber of Commerce Board President Nita van Grinsven says local business people want to see Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ College moved to the racecourse. “The Waterlea Racecourse is an ideal site for the co-located colleges, as it would utilise existing infrastructure on that side of town and support further investment from council into those facilities.” Waterlea Racecourse is close to

Lansdowne Park, and also next to Pollard Park with its tennis courts and a golf course. “It makes complete sense to locate the shared college site at the racecourse, as it is close to town and the students would have easy access to the facilities at both Lansdowne and Pollard Parks.” Housing is also going in that side of town, and the shift would let the racecourse move to another site where it could develop ‘a world class future-focused

multi-use equestrian facility’, Nita says. The Education Ministry’s head of education infrastructure services, Kim Shannon, says that ‘as with all site acquisitions’, it is continuing to explore a number of options. She confirmed ministry staff have talked to the head of NZ Racing and ‘other interested parties’. “At this stage we cannot comment further as these discussions are held ‘in confidence’ to protect

our negotiating position, the privacy of other parties, and in some cases, the provisions of confidentiality agreements. “We will make a public statement as soon as we can confirm a preferred site for the colocation of Marlborough Boys’ College and Ma rlborough Girls’ College.” Nita says the new shared college will be a huge asset to Blenheim, so it should be located where it will achieve greatest economic benefit for the region.

Living Treasures sought Nominations are now being sought for the Marlborough Living Cultural Treasure Award. The award is made to people who have demonstrated a lifetime of excellence in cultural endeavour and are a source of community inspiration. Nominations must be in by September 30. Nomination forms are available from the Marlborough Museum and the Marlborough District Council.

Place found for disabled adult toilet By Cathie Bell Councillors will be asked next month to confirm a decision to provide a public toilet for adult disabled people. Blenheim man Hularii Mckenzie asked the Marlborough District Council to provide an adult changing facility in Blenheim as part of Annual Plan submissions earlier this year, as their oldest child, seven

year-old Bailey, is wheelchairbound with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy among other conditions. Initially the council declined the request, but re-considered and directed staff have another look at the issue. Council’s property and community facilities manager Jamie Lyall says the proposed toilet could be retrofitted into

the facility at Liz Davidson Place in central Blenheim. Councillors at the next assets and services committee will be asked to approve its installation, which he estimates at $40,000. The facilities need to have a hoist and adult-size changing table. Jamie says it will not be a public facility in the usual

sense but accessed only by the families or carers of those requiring use of such specialised facilities, probably by way of a swipe card. “This would be an amenity used by only a very few people with particular high needs and, given the level of vandalism at our public toilets, it would have to be accessible by security card only.”

Highway closures State Highway 1 south of Kaikoura will have to close for longer periods to ensure it is open by Christmas. However, the closures will be timed to avoid major events such as the Kaikoura Seafest, Canterbury Anniversary Day, Labour Day and Marlborough Anniversary Day. The closures are planned for Monday to Friday, October 16 – 20, and Monday to Friday, November 6 – 10.

Doing their bit for environment

99

By Bill McElhinney A group of local people passionate about caring for the environment will be rolling up their sleeves at the Wairau Diversion on Saturday. “It’s our annual spring clean event,” New Zealand Motor Caravan Association Marlborough chairman Ian Simmons says. “We’re joining fellow motor home owners from around the country in a range of community-based projects.” The spring clean is a practical way for members to give back to the community and care for the environment, Ian says. “We sometimes get associated with freedom campers, but we’re not,” Ian says. “Our motor homes are all self-contained and we don’t leave anything behind. “”We’re proud of our beautiful country and we recognise our responsibility to play a part in keeping it that way,” Ian says. The local motor caravan members chose the Wairau Diversion for the spring clean because

of its popularity with recreational users. “At this time of the year it’s very popular with whitebaiters chasing the elusive delicacy,” Ian says. “We’re a city on wheels so we’re keen to harness the power of our members in all 25 areas across the country to make a difference to our environment.” Ian says that while the spring clean project is timed for just one month, the big picture is that the association members will take the project to heart. “I can see the day when our members will whip on their reflective vests and do a tidy-up wherever they see it’s needed. “In fact some members do already,” Ian says. “They pick up rubbish they might see in a rest area where they have stopped for a cuppa.” The Wairau Diversion spring clean gets underway at 10am on Saturday.

Renwick to get bus By Bill McElhinney A daily bus service between Blenheim and Renwick is being explored by the Marlborough District Council as it reviews the Blenheim Bus contract for 2018. The bus tender is being advertised now in the hope that decisions can be made by the Council for new services beginning March 1 next year. Whether or not the service goes ahead depends on the cost. Councillors will vote on the proposal later in the year. As well as a Renwick service, a new route connecting southwest Blenheim and Burleigh to the centre of Blenheim is proposed. It’s also possible that an extra

Council finance officer David Craig says bus companies have been asked to propose timetables for the proposed routes. The new services would be subject to a three month trial period to assess patronage. The Renwick and Blenheim southwest services would operate four daily return trips, Monday to Friday, and two return trips on Saturday. Fares to Renwick would be $3 for adults and $1.50 for school children. Super Gold card holders would travel for free between 9am and 3pm.

No, we’re not doing enough to support our mental health services locally or nationally.

No our mental health services are not properly funded. It’s a real issue.

Definitely not. Mental health services need much more support and money.

Dear Ed, Funny peculiar story by your reporter on former Kaikoura MP Colin King’s views on Winston Peters at the meeting. Why ask a National Party bod? Would’ve been more sensible to ask three or four people from audience. Colin King says PM Bill English deserves another term! Of course he’d say that. Why give English a go for another three years after nine years when poverty, richpoor divide and debt has increased so much? Winston Peters spoke well, with a sense of humour and he cares about NZ. National government has sold out our farmland to foreigners (e.g. Waihopai Valley) and under a stupid free trade agreement, sold out houses, farms and economy to China. Very dumb. Motorbike ride for men’s health By Cathie Bell The ‘Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride’ is on Sunday, and there will be some fantastic motorbikes and their riders taking part. The charity ride for classic and vintage style motorbikes will benefit prostate cancer and mental health causes. Marlborough organiser Anthony Barnes says the Marlborough ride is one of more than 500

events on the same day globally. “There are over 60,000 people taking part around the world.” There are 15 riders registered to take part in the Marlborough ride, on a range of bikes from Triumphs and Ducatti scramblers to an Ariel 1952 square four. The route is kept confidential to registered riders only, but Anthony says it will go through town and round the vineyards, ‘enjoying the scenery’. James Jenneson, Samantha Warrender, Anthony Barnes, Mike Gilbert, and Roger Gleeson are getting ready to ride.

Sit and be fit instructor Sue Houghton in action.

Sitting for fitness Those with low or limited mobility sometimes struggle to find a fitness programme to suit them, but not in Marlborough, Sport Tasman says. The successful Sit and Be Fit programme is now available at the Anglican Community Church in Renwick as well as Riversdale Community House, providing seated and low impact exercises in a fun and social environment that are designed to build lower and upper body strength while improving hand eye coordination. The low-cost, hour-long classes on a Tuesday afternoon are run by instructor Sue Houghton, who also takes the Riversdale classes. Sport Tasman community sport advisor Braden Prideaux says Sit and Be Fit has proved popular at Riversdale with at least 15 people regularly attending and he is hopeful of attracting similar numbers to the Renwick class. “Renwick Anglican Church is

already a bustling hub of activity, with Mainly Music classes for toddlers, Renwick Menz Shed, Tuesday markets, the Girls Brigade and indoor bowls in winter. Sit and Be Fit is an excellent addition.” Renwick hub coordinator Rev Joe Keighley is confident the exercise classes will be supported by the community. “They are an opportunity to have fun while getting active.” Nicki Stretch, general manager of Churchill Private Hospital Trust which is the major funder of the community hubs, says programmes like Sit and Be Fit are a great way to get and keep people moving on the path to better health. “There are many benefits including increased muscle mass and lower blood pressure, as well as making new friends.” The Sit and Be Fit Renwick classes are held on Tuesdays at 2pm and cost $2 per class.

Kupe and the octopus: Pupils tell the tale By Bill McElhinney The Maori legend behind the making of Queen Charlotte Sound has captivated pupils at Waikawa Bay School. “We introduced the pupils to the legend of Te Wheke Akoranga and asked them to write a story around it and design a logo,” principal Willem Lampe says. The exercise will result in a logo to be used by their community of learning, Willem says. The community comprises Waikawa Bay School, Queen Charlotte College, Picton School, St Joseph’s School, which is closing, and

Waitaria Bay School. “The legend is about the Maori explorer and warrior Kupe,” Waikawa pupil Shackleton Scollay says. “Kupe was angry because the octopus, wheke, was eating Kupe’s bait and the fish he was trying to catch,” Haeata Beechlove says. “So they had a big fight and as wheke flailed all has arms around, he carved out the area which is Queen Charlotte Sound. “Then Kupe killed wheke. He cut him in half with his taiha!” The pupils have written

stories about the legend and illustrated them with pictures, mostly of wheke the octopus. “We will invite senior pupils from Queen Charlotte College to come in and judge the pupils’ work,” Willem says. “Then the winning ones from each class will go on display in the Picton Mariners Mall. “One of them will eventually be used to design a logo for us.” The pupils’ work is on display at the school in the meantime, and parents and friends are welcome to drop in during Waikawa Bay School pupils Tara Thompson, Petra Schmidt, Haeata Beechlove and school hours to have a look. Wake up those tastebuds from winter and excite the palate with new season flavours and refreshing spring tipples.

Tiny fish and tall tales By Bill McElhinney “Whitebaiters are among the biggest liars in the country,” Tony Grainger says with a grin. The retired merchant navy cook is camped up at the Wairau Diversion for the duration of the whitebait season, which began on August 15 and ends on November 30. “Whitebaiters shroud their success in secrecy,” Tony says. “They’ll tell you about the big catch they had last week, or last season, but you never see any of it!” Tony and his mate, Brian Marshall, are living in their selfcontained motor homes as they chase the elusive delicacy. So how’s the season going? “Not flash,” Tony says. “I got about a pound early on in the season, but I’ve seen bugger all since.” It’s been much the same for Brian. “Enough for a feed, that’s all.”

Whitebaiters must be among the last people in the country to convert to metrics. Everything’s in pounds – except the price, of course. Back at the turn of the century whitebait caught were weighed in tons. The next century catches could be measured in kerosene tins, then pounds. Now, more often than not, a whitebaiter will measure a catch in cups. Whitebaiters staying at the Diversion must follow the rules. Their vehicles must be selfcontained and they must get a permit from the Marlborough District Council. Tony uses a set net, and the rules mean he must always be within 10 metres of his net. Brian uses a scoop net. “But the bait are skittery,” he says. “You can see a shoal coming, but if you make the slightest noise, they’re off out of reach.”

PM sympathy for the waiting quake-hit

Prime Minister Bill English talks with John and Robyn Cuddon in Blenheim.

By Cathie Bell Insurance companies ‘seem to be slow’ in their dealing with claims after last November’s earthquake, Prime Minister Bill English says. The Insurance Council says 77 per cent of all residential buildings had been assessed by the end of August, and 53 per cent of residential claims have been settled either in full or partially, chief executive Tim Grafton says. The total value of insurance claims for the 14 November Kaikoura earthquake as at 31 August 2017 is over $2 billion, he says, with most of the losses in commercial claims at $1.48 billion, with residential claims amounting to nearly $0.55 billion. Talking during an election campaign visit to Blenheim yesterday, Bill says that it sounded like there was still ‘plenty to do’ for the insur-

ance companies after the earthquake more than 10 months ago. “That does sound like a long time… I would encourage them to get on with assessments because it’s stressful.” Bill spoke to the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce after visiting the New World supermarket and BV Gourmet café, where he met Labour’s Kaikoura candidate Janette Walker. “I didn’t spend much time talking to her because I don’t think she’s going to vote for me.” He also visited Springlands School, Pak ‘n Save, Makana Chocolate, and Renwick Tractor and Services. The general election is this Saturday, with people able to vote for their local MP and the party they would like to see form the next Government.

Air force crews train in mountains By Bill McElhinney A Royal New Zealand Air Force helicopter squadron is taking to the skies in and around Marlborough this week conducting a training exercise. Exercise Bluebird involves training for No. 6 Squadron’s Seasprite naval helicopter crews. “This training prepares the crew for mountain flying when undertaking tasks such as routine resupply flights to Raoul and Auckland islands,” No. 6 Squadron Public Information Officer Flight Lieutenant Kerryn Dryden says.

“Most recently, mountain flying was carried out when No. 6 Squadron provided civilian support in Kaikoura at the end of last year.” Exercise Bluebird ensures Air Force crews are ready to respond at a moment’s notice when required for any such search and rescue callout over the next year, Kerryn says. The crews fly to the Dip Flat Camp in Wairau Valley to practise mountain-flying operations and alpine survival training. Support for the exercise is being provided from RNZAF Base Woodbourne.

Grace McKendry and Madison Charman from St Mary’s School with their pea plants and poo science fair entry.

Jared Henn and Felix Bell from Richmond View School with their copper motor mania science fair entry.

250 entrants in fair By Bill McElhinney Grace McKendry and Madison Charman, year 5 and 6 pupils from St Mary’s School, delved into animal poo for their science fair project. Their entry was one of 250 in the annual Marlborough Lines Science and Technology fair, which aims to promote a greater interest in science and technology amongst students of all ages. Grace and Madison planted sugar snap peas, and then fed those ostrich, chicken, cow and sheep manure to see how the plants responded. “Cow was best,” Grace says. “Chicken and ostrich were the stinki-

est!” Madison says. Jared Henn and Felix Bell from Richmond View School built a small electric motor then ran it with different batteries to see which produced the best rpm on the motor. “The nine volt battery worked the best,” Felix says. “The extra voltage made the motor spin faster.” The Science Fair has been evolving in Marlborough since the 1960s and is now organised as a partnership between Blenheim Lions, local schools, teachers, community organisations and major sponsor Marlborough Lines.

BLUE TEAM Saturday, September 30, 2017

Rowan Ingpen of the Woodbourne Tavern and Mike Neal of the Redwood Tavern.

Fight night approaches By Celeste Alexander There’s going to be plenty of friendly rivalry going around on the night of the Life Education’s Fight for Life charity boxing match, including between the live streaming venues. On the night of the fight, September 30, there will be amateur opening fights leading up to the 10 corporate fights which ticket holders will be able to enjoy ringside. Those who missed out on tickets can watch the event live streaming from three locations. The Redwood Tavern, Woodbourne Tavern and Waterfront Bar & Grill are on board as live streaming venues and are open to the public to go along and back their favourite teams. The Redwood Tavern is backing the ‘red team,’ while the Woodbourne Tavern has the ‘blue team’, and the Waterfront Bar & Grill will remain neutral. Each will have food and drink specials as well as fundraising auctions, raffles and plenty of banter throughout the evening. This is proving to be a lot

of fun, according to Mike Neal of the Redwood Tavern and Rowan Ingpen of the Woodbourne Tavern. “ W hen we were ap proached by the trust I immediately thought it was a good cause,” Mike says. “My kids loved Harold and it’s a great event to be part of. “Come on down and support the Red Team.” At the Woodbourne Tavern, Rowan Ingpen and Richard Marlow will actually be ringside on the night as they have sponsored blue team fighter Bryan Fisher. But back at the tavern there will be plenty of fun had throughout the evening with drinks and food specials and live streaming on all their screens. “We are really looking forward to it, particularly to cheer on Bryan and the blue team. “It will be a great night so come on down and join in on the fun,” Rowan says. For those who go along to watch the Fight for Life, donation buckets will be circulating so please show your support for the Life Education Trust.

Signs of breast cancer in men and women.

Be breast aware Say goodbye to unsightly, aching, varicose veins

Breast Cancer Awareness Month runs from October 1 - 31 and to highlight the importance of being ‘breast aware’, here is some helpful information from the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation. Breast cancer is most treatable when it’s found early. Be breast aware from age 20 The best thing you can do to protect yourself is to be breast aware from the age of 20. This means knowing how your breasts normally look and feel and checking for any unusual changes at least once a month. The best time to check your breasts is about 10 days after your period finishes, once any tenderness or swelling has settled down. Show your doctor if you have any unusual symptoms that persist beyond your pre-menstrual phase, particularly if you can feel a hard knot, thickening or lump in your breast or notice any skin or nipple changes. Consider starting mammograms at age 40 The BCFNZ recommends women consider

starting mammograms at 40. You’re not eligible for free mammograms until age 45, so you’d need to pay to go private. Breast cancers tend to grow quickly in this age group, so it’s recommend having mammograms every year until age 50. From 45 to 50 consider alternating each year between BreastScreen Aotearoa’s free mammogram service, and paying for mammograms privately. Use BreastScreen Aotearoa’s free mammogram service from age 45 From age 45 – 69, you can have a free mammogram once every two years through BreastScreen Aotearoa. The service is available in centres around New Zealand, and through BreastScreen Aotearoa’s mobile screening unit, which travels to smaller towns throughout the year. To register for this service, PH 0800 270200 or register online.

Be breast aware Even if you’re having regular mammograms, it’s important to check your breasts at least once a month for any unusual changes. Most breast cancers occur in women over 50 years of age, so it’s important that you keep up to date with regular mammograms after turning 50. Even though the free mammogram service stops at age 69, people in this age group are still at risk of getting breast cancer. In fact, your breast cancer risk is higher at 70 than it is at 50, so consider continuing to have mammograms. Understand your family history Talk with your family members about

cancer on both sides of your family. If your mother or sister has had breast or ovarian cancer before the age of 50, it’s recommended you get screened annually from the age of 30. While the risk of inherited breast cancer is low, talk about it with your doctor. If you are potentially at high risk, you may be eligible for genetic testing with Genetic Health Service NZ. This would require a referral from your doctor. Women at high risk of breast cancer should be referred to a breast specialist for advice on appropriate screening. This may include MRIs being added to their screening recommendations.

The Skin Clinic Marlborough is equipped with high resolution digital mapping technology allowing early detection of melanomas and other skin cancers. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can result in a complete cure from skin cancer. The clinic provides a comprehensive range of treatment options and is now approved by Southern Cross as an affiliated provider. Make an appointment today to have you and your family’s skin checked. Moutere building up for Fiji By Cathie Bell Moutere Rugby Club is taking a team of young players to Fiji next year, but the focus of the trip is on more than just sport with the club fundraising to take equipment to the villages where they will be playing as well. Spokeswoman Donna Tupouto’a says the club is taking an invitational team of 14 and 15 year-olds to Fiji in July next year. They are fundraising to pay for the trip, selling firewood during the winter, and a ‘horse racing’ and auction evening at the Rangitane centre on October 14. The team is going to Fiji, not just to play rugby, but to help the three ‘quite remote’ villages where they will be playing, Donna says. They are playing three games at three schools, she says, and the club hopes to

build a network so the games can happen every two years. “It’s not just about rugby, it’s about the culture as well. “One village, they have to cross two rivers to get to school, and they do that every day… Our kids are going to spend time at the school and see what we can do to help.” Donna says the club is contacting Air New Zealand to arrange to take over stuff the villages have asked for, ranging from rugby and netball balls, clothes, bedding, and school stationery. The trip will be ‘100 per cent fundraised’, she says, and the team members have cut and sold firewood, washed cars, held a garage sale, and sold pies from Renwick Pies. “It’s brought our team together… They’re earning it.”

Moutere rugby club juniors are fundraising for Fiji.

Croquet season opened officially on Saturday Members of the Blenheim Croquet Club gathered together last Saturday for the opening of the new season. Blenheim Croquet club president Alison Brice welcomed Mayor John Leggett and the Mayoress Anne Best, who had been invited to run the first hoop. Other guests included John Campbell, president of the Marlborough Croquet Association, and six members of the Brooklyn Croquet Club. Members and guests then enjoyed playing two games

prior to afternoon tea. A full and varied programme is proposed for the coming season, spokesman Allan Hutton says, with association croquet on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, and golf croquet on Tuesday, Thursday and Sundays. “This season we hope to start ricochet on Friday afternoons.” New members and visitors are very welcome, Allan says. For further enquiries please contact:Anne on 5783519 or Allan on 5783747.

Ed Massey passes the baton to Robbie Barnes, with Jim Mercer eagerly looking for his lap two runner to take over at the Momorangi changeover point of the Queen Charlotte relay.

Relay runners out in force The senior men’s team from Nelson set out to challenge the field in the 36th Queen Charlotte relay held on Saturday. The popular event, which is run in sections between Picton and Havelock, attracted 42 runner teams and seven teams of walkers, Les McKay from the Marlborough Harrier Club says. “Conditions for the day were ideal. “There was some rain during the debrief at Picton School, then the conditions went from overcast to fine and warm. “We had seven walker teams leaving the Waitohi Domain at 11.30am and two runner teams who had asked to leave with the walkers because

they were going to be slow. “The teams were mainly from Marlborough, but we had one from Rangiora, one from Island Bay and 12 from Nelson,” Les says. “It became quite obvious Athletics Nelson senior men’s team had decided they were going to challenge the field and also go below two hours – a time they had been challenging for the past couple of years. “Their time was 1 hr 59 min 47 seconds. “The Athletics Nelson junior men came in second in 2 hr 12 min 21 seconds and the Marlborough Harrier Club senior men came in third in 2 hr 12 min 45 seconds,” Les says. “Our generous sponsors allowed us

to offer great performance prizes for qualifying grades, fastest lap times in all grades and 21 spot prize bags. “A special spot prize was a Trek mountain bike from Spokesman Cycles, which was won by Ashleigh Weaver in the MOB team. “We asked her if she already had a bike. She did but it was a real old one which she hated, so the new bike went to the right person,” Les says. Les also thanked the users of the Queen Charlotte Drive on Saturday for being considerate to the competitors and their many supporters. The 37th Queen Charlotte Relay will be held on Saturday, September 15 next year.

Regatta brings women to harbour By Cathie Bell The inaugural Mud House Women’s Helm Regatta will take place in the heart of the Marlborough Sounds at the Waikawa Boating Club, during the final weekend of September. Mud House brand manager Chrissy Powlesland can’t wait for the regatta weekend. The regatta is aimed at women around New Zealand, offering social and serious sailing, as well as food, wine, and socialising, and with guest speaker Dave Greenburg talking about his new book ‘Emergency Response – Life, Death and Helicopters.’ Dave has worked for many years with the Wellington Westpac Rescue Helicopter and his book is based on his life and experiences in the air. Chrissy says Mud House is

delighted to be involved in encouraging women to give sailing a go. “As the only event of its kind in New Zealand, it’s an accessible entry into sailing, and a great excuse for a girls’ weekend in beautiful Marlborough.” Mud House was founded upon the platform of sailing and adventure, with the founders of Mud House sailing into the Marlborough Sounds more than 20 years ago to plant vines up the Wairau Valley. The two-day regatta at Waikawa will cater to all levels of sailing abilities, an event where women will share their verve and energy, matching that of the wine they will be enjoying. To register for the event, please contact the Waikawa Boating Club on (03) 573 Mud House brand manager Chrissy Powlesland is looking forward to sharing the 6798 or office@waikawa- Mud House Sub Region Series Range wines with competitors and supporters of the inaugural Mud House Women’s Helm Regatta at the end of the month. boatingclub.co.nz

Ali Hills Sponsors - The Yard Bar & Cartel Reason for participating: “The Fight For Life is a once in a lifetime opportunity and for such a great cause. I had to give it a go! I know that the Life Education Trust are a valued service and my own children have always enjoyed Harold and his interactive education. “The training for this event has been full on and certainly a challenge. Certainly it has helped me to appreciate that if you put your mind to something you can do anything. “I hope this event is an inspiration to others to get out of their comfort zone and pursue their goals and dreams. I cannot praise the trainers highly enough for their patience, commitment and encouragement. Both teams are awesome and everyone has worked so hard and trained with passion and pride. “A big thankyou to my sponsors, the Yard Bar and Cartel.”

Pigeon race results Blenheim racing pigeon club was finally able to conduct their second race of the old bird season on Sunday 17th from Christchurch a distance of 235 km. The misty rain made for a slower race than expected but even so there was only seconds between the first arrivals with Alister Cooper of Renwick on 64.6 km/hr and Two Fishers loft of Dillon’s Point with 64.5 km/hr. Third place to Chris Bensley with his bird doing 61 km/hr followed by Ian McColm doing 53km/hr and George Massie in Picton with 40km/hr.

Harrier Club prizegiving The Marlborough Harrier Club annual prize giving is being held at the Harrier Shed, Churchward Park, Taylor Pass Road, on Sunday from 12 noon. Come along to celebrate triumphs for the 2016 season and enjoy a barbecue and beverages.

Makos seize win The Tasman Makos provincial rugby team beat the previously-unbeaten Wellington team in an exciting 37-35 Mitre 10 Cup win at Lansdowne Park in Blenheim last Sunday. This Sunday, they take on the Southland Stags at Trafalgar Park in Nelson.

Jog, walk tomorrow Joggers and walkers of all abilities are welcome to join the Marlborough Harrier Club pack/training run or walk tomorrow. Walkers and runners leave from the clubrooms at Oliver Park on the corner of Weld and Cleghorn Streets at 6pm. Reflector gear is compulsory.

Tasman soccer selection Three Marlborough players have been selected as part of Tasman United’s National Youth League squad. The 22-person squad, selected by coaches Rob Anderson and Gary Calderbank, includes striker Alex Connor-McClean, defender Liam Sluiter and forward Keagan Mortimer.

The Sun will be profiling each Fight For Life competitor in the lead up to the big event on September 30.
