By Cathie Bell National’s Stuart Smith has been returned as the Kaikoura electorate member of Parliament with an election night majority of 9766 votes over nearest rival, Labour’s Janette Walker. Third in the race was new New Zealand First candidate Jamie Arbuckle with 3903 votes, and Green candidate Richard McCubbin with 2417 votes. Stuart’s majority was down almost 3000 votes on his 2014 majority of 12,570, but he says he is still ‘very pleased’ with the result. “It’s a huge privilege and responsibility to be an MP.” Continued on Page 2 Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith with wife Julie and campaign manager Tim Leslie.

Kaikoura electorate re-elects Stuart Smith Continued from page 1 Stuart was one of 58 National Party MPs elected last Saturday, but a Government is unlikely to be formed until October 7, when the results of the special votes are announced. Those votes could change the election night results. National’s 58 MPs compares with Labour’s 45, the Green Party’s 7, and New Zealand First’s 9. The ACT Party got 1 MP with David Seymour being elected in Epsom, but National leader Bill English has already said ACT will not be in Government in an effort to convince NZ First leader Winston Peters to go into coalition with National. Stuart celebrated election night with his supporters at the Rangitane cultural centre in Grovetown. He says he is ‘very pleased’ with the result. “It’s a different election from 2014, but to have a good result like we’ve had in both party and personal votes, it’s a strong result.” He couldn’t do it without a team, he says, and ‘I’ve had a great team’. “I feel really privileged to be the MP and this result is more pleasurable than the last one. It’s more exciting.

It’s been great. “It’s a huge privilege and responsibility to be an MP and represent people and I’m really looking forward to the next three years.” Jamie says he is ‘pretty happy’ with his result, as being selected 39 days before the election hadn’t given him much time to campaign. He ‘definitely’ wants to stand for NZ First again, he says. “It’s something to learn from, and

with more time, we can prepare a lot better. “There’s a big opportunity to build the party here over the next three years.” Janette says there are an unusual number of special votes to count from this electorate, ‘higher than normal’, and she expects that to have an impact on the result. “I expect Stuart Smith’s margin to decrease a bit more.”

She has also been leading the work at Avonside Girls’ for the relocation and co-location with Shirley Boys’ High School. “Our school design is very much based on our vision for learning and it’s great to hear about the extensive consultation Marlborough Girls’ and Boys’ have been undertaking with the community.” Mary-Jeanne was selected from

We are very pleased that she has accepted the position and we look forward to her taking up her role next year.”

Trains resume Freight trains are back on the main north line from Picton to Christchurch after a pause due to bad weather. The line re-opened on September 15 after closing in November’s earthquake. KiwiRail is warning people crossing railway lines to look out for trains at all times.

Maori MP re-elected Labour’s Rino Tirakatene has been re-elected to Parliament as MP for the Te Tai Tonga electorate, which covers all the South Island and the Wellington region. He was elected with 8435 votes on election night, well ahead of the Green Party’s Metiria Turei who had 4448 votes.Final results with the special votes included are available on October 7.

Judgement appealed

Faye and Bernard Leov are appealing a High Court judgement against them for defamation in a long-running dispute based at Rai Valley Area School, and are seeking to have it put aside. In a statement, the couple’s lawyer Christopher Griggs says the appeal is based on what they say are ‘errors of fact and law’ in the judgment. The letter at the centre of the defamation hearing was prepared and signed by author Helen Dunn, not by the couple, he says, but she was an independent contractor, not the Leovs’ employee. She sent the letter at a time when Faye had told her not to, he says. “Despite that, the High Court found that Ms Dunn was the Leovs’ agent and held that they were liable as copublishers of what she wrote. “The Leovs say that was wrong in law and fact, which is the main reason they are appealing.”

Formal ‘one of best’ By Celeste Alexander Caravans, trucks, excavators and even scooters were used as transport by students attending the Combined Colleges Formal last Friday evening. Themed ‘Casino Royale’, the formal was an elegant occasion and has been described by college staff as being ‘one of the best’. Marlborough Girls’ College head girl McKynlee Breen says feedback from staff and students is ‘really positive’.

“I was told this formal was one of the most successful. There was a lot more dancing and the whole event had a really vibrant, happy vibe,” she says. Students arrived at the Marlborough Convention Centre to walk the red carpet. Inside there was live band Accoustic Boomtown performing and later in the evening a DJ. They enjoyed a dinner, dancing and photo booths before the event wrapped up at midnight.

The venue was decorated using donated furniture from Simone Hill as well as an Aston Martin for photo purposes. Awards were given out on the night, voted on by the students. Cutest Couple - Anaru Anderson and Lina Schoni. King and Queen - Patrick Williams and Elizabeth Kula. Prince and Princess - William Day and Olivia Harrison-Jones.

By Bill McElhinney Pelorus blokes could do a better job of looking after their health. “We did a survey around the area a while ago,” Hazel Booth from the Pelorus Area Health Trust says. “There are a lot of farmers and fishermen out there, and we were concerned to find that few of the men had bothered to have health checks.” The Havelock Lions Club got to hear about this, so members have joined forces with Havelock Vision 2020 to organise a free Health Expo in the Havelock Town Hall, starting on Friday and running from 10am to 3pm through to Monday. “The Lions have always promoted eye health,” Havelock club secretary Ian Cameron says. “And this year we wanted to raise awareness of diabetes, which is so common,” Havelock

Lions Club president Alison Morriss says. “We will have a form that people can fill out that will help them identify this disease. “There will be a range of health professionals on hand at the expo to answer questions and help people access the right health services.” Among them will be people from the Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Marlborough, Diabetes Marlborough, the Marlborough Primary Health Organisation, the Asthma Society and the Stroke Foundation. Optometrist Jenny McKeogh will be there as well as a representative from the Pelorus Area Health Trust, the Rural Support Trust, St Johns, Age Concern and a number of other voluntary organisations that assist with community health. “It’s free,” Janet Brownson from Havelock Vision 2020 says, “so come along and find out more and be prepared for your future.”

By Celeste Alexander There have been numerous fundraisers and thousands of dollars donated and now the time has come for young Georgina Westergard-Allen to travel to St. Louis’ Children’s Hospital in America for her life-changing surgery. Georgina was diagnosed with a form of cerebral palsy, due to a brain bleed following her birth, called spastic diplegia, which affects her mobility and has caused her hips to become deformed. She was accepted for a life-changing spinal surgical procedure called ‘Selective dorsal rhizotomy’ which involves Georgina’s highlyspastic nerves being permanently cut in her spine, leaving the good ones intact. Following that she will have orthopedic surgery to lengthen the tendons in her legs. Throughout the year there has been a lot of community support for fundraisers held, raising just shy of $80,000 for Georgina. Georgina’s mother Siobhan says she recently paid the total bill for the surgery which came to $78,536.79, and thanks to the fundraising and community grants they managed to raise an incredible $79,827. “This money we have fundraised has taken the stress out of the whole thing which has been amazing. So many people got in behind us and for that we are truly grateful. “We have decided that all funds raised in excess of the hospital bills are going to fund Georgina’s ongoing intensive post-operative physical therapy back here in New Zealand. This is key to the surgery’s success,” Siobhan says. Georgina will be travelling with her family, mum Siobhan, dad Frank and twin sister Olivia. The family flies out of New Zealand on October 7 and the surgery is booked for October 17.

Georgina Westergard-Allen.

Their plan is to spend a few days getting settled then following the surgery Georgina will spend a week in hospital. They return November 20 and from there on Georgina will continue to receive post-op physical therapy at home. Before they leave there is one final fundraising event being held on Sunday, October 1. It is a Devonshire Tea in the Garden being held in a beautiful, well established Tua Marina garden on Blind Creek Road. Tickets are being sold for $15 each. There will be gate sales on the day but for catering purposes, organisers encourage people to purchase tickets earlier. There will be live music, raffles and a lucky ticket prize. It runs from 11am - 3:30pm. Contact Glenda on 03 574 1227, text Melissa on 021 184 2580 or email bartmelchelsea@gmail.com

Art society life members make mark By Cathie Bell Life members of the Marlborough Art Society were piped in to the opening of an exhibition of their work by a bagpiper. The ‘Love of Art’ exhibition, which opened last Friday at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery on High Street, shows the work by 10 life members, and it runs until October 8. President Ian Welsh praised the life members, not just for their work, but also their commitment to the society with all playing many different roles in the society for many years. The life members with work on display are: Lorna Clarke, Ron Warnes, Walter Scott, Karen Cunningham, Prue Matthews, Kelvin Allen, Jennifer Jones-Godden, David Godden, Diana Mickell, and Suzanne Roundhill.

Seniors dinner and dance on Sunday By Bill McElhinney The annual Age Concern Marlborough Seniors Dance is on again at the Clubs of Marlborough in Blenheim this Sunday. Dance organiser Ken Ham says the dance, from 4pm to 7pm, will feature music from the 1950s and 1960s. Music will be provided by Janet’s Old Time Dance Band and the Blenheim Orphans Club Band, who have entertained dance-goers since 2009. About 150 people usually attend the dance, says Ken, who acts as MC and also plays in the band.

Tickets are $10, which covers about a third of the cost of the event, which includes dinner, Ken says. “It’s a subsidised community event, and I’m always grateful to our generous sponsors.” “The most important thing is getting people out and having fun,” Age Concern community support worker Catherine Donnelly says. The test was whether people were smiling and tapping their hands and feet along to the music. Tickets are available from Ken Ham’s Music Works or the Blenheim Grey Power and Age Concern offices.

Riding Home – the Longest Day

Graham Sloan, left, and author Steve Reid with Graham’s lovingly restored 1948 Commer truck, one of the truck featured in Steve’s latest book.

Classic trucks feature in Steve’s latest collection By Bill McElhinney Steve Reid cuts hair by day and studies vintage vehicles at night. Steve operates Petrolhead Barbers in Queen Street, giving men and boys ‘just a good-old hair cut and then they can get back on with their daily routine.’ Steve has been cutting hair for 36 years, completing his apprenticeship in a Blenheim hairdressing salon then getting a job in Jim Wilson’s barbershop on Market St. But Steve’s passion is classic vehicles, particularly Ford Zephyrs. He has owned about 44 of them. Most were bought for parts but they included a Mark 1 saloon, a Mark 2 station wagon, and Mark 2 and Mark 3 utes. However, the Blenheim car enthusiast has downsized his collection in recent years and now owns just two Mk IV Zephyr Zodiacs. Instead of collecting classic cars, Steve has been photographing them and writing about them. His first book, ‘Veteran Cars: An Amazing New Zealand Collection’, was published in 2013, followed by ‘Kiwi Vintage Car Collections in 2014’, and he has just finished his latest work, ‘Vintage Trucks and Commercials – Kiwi Collections.’ New Zealand has its fair share of vintage truck lovers, from restorers, to owners, to photographers to simple fans. And Steve

has been able to gather together a selection of photographs of vintage trucks and commercials, and the accompanying stories of them and their devoted owners. “I didn’t have to travel too far for this book,” Steve says, “only as far as Christchurch. Previously I’ve had to go to the North Island to meet some of the collectors.” One of the trucks featured in the book is a 1948 Commer, which has been restored by Blenheim man Graham Sloan. “I take it out for a drive at least twice a week,” Graham says, “although not if it’s really raining – the windscreen wiper doesn’t work that well! “It attracts a lot of attention. Last time I drove it to Mitre 10 I didn’t get out of the car park for over an hour.” Graham bought the Commer from its owner in Levin and stripped it right back. “There was a lot of rust underneath, but the motor had been reconditioned and was reasonably good. “It’s taken a lot of hours to get it in this condition.” Along with Graham’s Commer, Steve’s book features other old workhorses including Fords, Bedfords, Diamond Ts, Internationals, Austins, Leylands, a Studebaker, a Plymouth Fargo— and even a Walker Electric. Steve’s book is due for release early next month.

LOCALLY OWNED & TRUSTED FOR OVER 18 YEARS

For most bike riders, there’s nothing quite like heading off on an extended trip. Whether it’s just throwing a couple of shirts and sammies in the backpack or a well-planned ride with scheduled waypoints, the lure of our beautiful open roads never fails to thrill. Eventually of course we have to head home, but riders beware because that last day on the road is the most dangerous. Too many times we hear of a rider involved in a crash on their way home. How is it that a long trip can go so well only to end badly and sadly not far from home? The number one culprit? Fatigue. But why more so on that last day? Here are two stories. Several years ago, we were on an extended tour and decided to bypass our last destination and head all the way home to Blenheim in one run of 450km. The weather had been good and

after several hours of riding all was well until we turned away from the coast just north of Kekerengu and were hit with the infamous Marlborough nor’ westers. With two up on a fully faired bike, the next hour and a half was a tense and exhausting struggle with winds that we found out later approached 100kph. Our safety margins were wiped out, I was knackered and we were lucky to make it home safely. Here’s another situation. A tour south finishing with a track day at Ruapuna, and what could be better than to run wide open laps on a proper race track. Follow that with one of the great rides in the country up that same Kaikoura coast road and it should make for a perfect trip. But it’s been a long day; your system is probably still churning from track-induced adrenalin and testosterone, and you’re tired. You over-

cook a tight left-hander and you’re going down. You’re in leathers and not going that fast - should be okay. But there’s no defence against that big SUV in the opposite lane that runs over you. Sound far-fetched? Sorry, another true story. The rider escaped with his life, but not two years of pain-filled rehabilitation. Fatigue affects your mind and body in many ways. It clouds your ability to make good decisions and slows your reaction times. Bike riders have only a few things between them and danger. You have your riding skills, your good sense and whatever margins of safety you can utilise on the road. Fatigue erodes those skills and good sense and when they go, your margins are drastically compromised. Take your time; make your last day the shortest day. Be careful out there and get home safe. Rod rows, rides and sews although he can’t see By Bill McElhinney Losing his sight hasn’t stopped Rod Henderson from getting on with life. Although he is legally blind, Rod runs his own business, is a competitive rower and plans to do the 101 km Forrest GrapeRide cycle race next year on a tandem bike. Rod was always blind in one eye, but was able to work on his parents’ farm on the Inland Road, Kaikoura as a young man. “I drove cars, motorbikes, I had a heavy transport licence,” Rod says. “But then in my early 30s my eyes got really sore. I was sent to a specialist in Christchurch but there was nothing they could do. I was eventually classified as legally blind.” Rod was then referred to the Blind Foundation, who were extremely helpful, he says. “They taught me how to get around using a cane, how to set up a computer with a programme that converts text into spoken words. They supply talking books. They were great.” Rod has also had several guide dogs and his last one, Vincent, was the dog that appeared in the Blenheim Musical Theatre production of Annie. Vincent has been retired, and Rod is now waiting to get another dog. Rod, with some assistance from ACC, has set himself up in his own business, Rod and Rose Industrial Sewing, at his Endeavour Street home,. “It was always a hobby of mine,” Rod says. “When I was on the farm I did leatherwork and made horse gear, bridles and the like.” Now Rod makes horse covers, boat covers, BBQ covers, dive bags, shade sails, swimming pool covers and a wide range of leather and PVC goods. “I couldn’t do it without family support,” Rod says. “I’m helped by my wife, Rose, and daughter Kelly and son Jason.” Rod also rows with the Blenheim Rowing Club,

Louise Brownie from the Marlborough Stamp Collectors’ Club at the club’s new Brayshaw Park clubrooms.

Stamp of approval Rod Henderson is legally blind but runs his own industrial sewing business.

and came back from the World Masters Games held in Auckland in April with three bronze medals, including one for the single sculls. How does a blind person compete in single sculls? “The chase boat drives in front of you,” Rod says, “and calls out directions – left, right. Oh, and STOP!” Rod’s next challenge is the Grape Ride with a friend on a tandem bike. He’s had a few training rides and will do some more when the weather warms up. Meanwhile, the Blind Foundation needs more volunteers for the 2017 Blind Week street collection on October 6 and 7. With at least three New Zealanders a day referred to the Blind Foundation for support with blindness or sight loss, the annual appeal is more important than ever, the Foundation’s chief executive Sandra Budd says.

The pre-eminent option for retirement living in MARLBOROUGH

By Bill McElhinney “It’s great to finally have a place to call home,” long-time stamp collector Louise Brownie says. Louise is standing in the Marlborough Stamp Collectors’ Club’s new clubhouse at Brayshaw Park in Blenheim. The clubhouse was the former Woodbank School building, a 100-year-old historic classroom that has been relocated from its original location at Clarence School. Getting the classroom to its new location proved to be a bit of a mission. The building was sitting on a flat-bed truck near Clarence when the November earthquake struck, and access to Blenheim was subsequently stopped. However, the building has now been set on its new site, given a new roof and a coat of paint, and work

is continuing to fit out the interior for the club’s purposes. “We’ve had some great community support,” Louise says, “including grants from the Rata Foundation and the Redwood Trust. We’re very grateful.” A ramp has been added for disabled access, fluorescent lights and new wiring installed new carpet and a heat pump. “We will need to do some more fundraising for a kitchen to be installed,” Louise says. Now the club has somewhere where their membership of over 60 people can hold exhibitions, workshops and stamp fairs. The clubrooms also house their valuable collection of stamp catalogues, some dating back to 1903. Club members are now looking forward to the official opening of the clubrooms at 2pm on Saturday.

By Cathie Bell Scots folk singer Isla Grant is looking forward to returning to Blenheim and performing for her many fans here. She performs at the ASB Civic Theatre on Saturday October 28. “I just love the people in New Zealand, all over, to be honest. They always give us such a great welcome when we come on. It’s a tour we always look forward to.” While there is always demand

for favourite songs like ‘Single Yellow Rose’, she hopes people will like the songs from the new album, ‘I’m a Survivor’. She also has a new album of Christmas songs out as well. The tour is a long one, 52 concerts in all, and they have just done concert number 13 in Australia after this interview with the Sun. “It’s what we do. I suppose I’ve never done anything else, it’s a way of life to us.”

The audience reaction picks the performers up, Isla says. “Always meeting people at the end of the night and hearing stories about how much they’ve been looking forward to us coming back, that keeps you going.” While in Marlborough, Isla won’t be taking in any of the region’s famous sauvignon blanc as she doesn’t drink alcohol. “But my two buddies on stage and the crew make up for it, they like a nice glass of wine.”

A silent auction will also be held, so please bring cash along and bid on the many incredible items that have been donated for the show. Nibbles and wedding cake will be served and a cash bar is available for those wanting to purchase additional drinks. “Please come along and support the show. Ticket purchases, the silent auction and raffles on the night all go towards raising money for our two chosen local charities,” convenor Noeline Stewart says.

The annual Bride of the Year Show is organised by a committee of volunteers from the Beavertown Blenheim Lions. What is unique about this committee is that many of them either have memories of watching the Bride of the Year Show or taking part themselves. Coleen Bush who has been part of the organising committee for a number of years took part over 40 years ago after she was married. “It was a lot more basic back then but I remember winning some beautiful perfume,” she says. Lesley Ayson recalls presenting the prizes in 1999 when the show was held at the Civic Theatre, and Heather Wilson going along as a child to watch from the audience. The show has been going for decades held previously by the Blenheim Lions and over the past 13 years by the Blenheim Beavertown Lions. Blenheim Podiatry How often have you shrugged off foot pain thinking it’s normal? Perhaps you have purchased shoes, that no matter the style, they continue to cause discomfort in your feet or lower limbs? What ever the reason is for your pain and discomfort, there is a specialist clinic here in Blenheim that can help, specialising in all areas of foot care. Blenheim Podiatry is locally owned by Matthew and Kate Franken and this month is particularly special to them, as the business marks 10 years. It was a chance conversation that led the couple to pack their bags and relocate to Marlborough in 2007 to purchase the business, formally named Wairau Podiatry. Matt and Kate had been working for themselves in Christchurch when they decided to leave the city for a rural Australian setting, taking up positions at a hospital in Victoria. They met with the former owner of Wairau Podiatry at an event in Hobart two years later and after a short conversation about the business, their minds were made up. “We had friends in Blenheim and always liked it so when this business opportunity came up we jumped at it. “One of the best things we ever did was moving here,” Kate says. The couple moved the business to 40 Seymour Street which gave them more space for foot care display areas, and then rebranded to Blenheim Podiatry in 2014. Last year Matt and Kate welcomed podia-

trist Alhana Clendon to the team. Together they provide the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of medical and surgical conditions of the feet and lower limbs. The team treats people of all ages and can diagnose and treat a huge range of ailments including sports injuries right through to ingrown toenails. “What people might not realise is that a large part of our business is to regularly cut people’s toenails which is particularly helpful to those who have mobility issues and can’t bend to reach their feet,” Kate says. Complementing the foot care is a range of shoes, sandals, slippers and jandals, including some designed for diabetics. “These are designed for people with orthotics and gives people an option when it comes to choosing the right footwear,” Kate says. There is also a range of diabetic, circulation and sports socks available as well as retail foot care products. “Our podiatrists can assess your feet and advise you on appropriate footwear.” When choosing a shoe, it is often important to try and purchase shoes that offer your feet the correct support, Kate says. Regular visits to Blenheim Podiatry can help prevent foot problems, alleviate pain and help keep you on your feet to lead an active lifestyle. To make an appointment, call in to 40 Seymour Street, phone or book online at www.blenheimpodiatry.co.nz

Road to success

Twenty three members of the Blenheim branch of New Zealand Motor Caravan Association turned up at the Wairau Diversion on Saturday and collected around 30 bags of rubbish. “The most common items were fast food wrappers, drink cans, bottles and the usual amounts of dumped household furniture and car parts,” president Ian Simmons says. The rubbish collected was taken to the refuse centre by the Marlborough District Council reserves ranger, Ian says.

Wine and Food fest music out The NZ All-Stars are to be the headline act at next February’s Marlborough Wine and Food Festival. The band, made up of music ‘royalty’, will have Tiki Taane, Boh Runga, Fran Kora, Anna Coddington and Joel Shadbolt each taking lead vocals to perform the ‘Marley: Celebrate the Legend’ show. Wellington-based chef Martin Bosley will be in the cCulinary Pavilion this year along with other yetto-be-announced top Kiwi chefs who will be dishing out some of the region’s best produce from Cloudy Bay Clams, Regal Marlborough

King Salmon, Kono and so much more. The longest running and best wine and food festival in New Zealand has announced an even bigger and better line up of chefs and bands for the event, held on Saturday 10th February 2018 at the historic Brancott Vineyard in Marlborough. Festival general manager Marcus Pickens says VIP, Master Class and General Admission tickets are on sale now, with a Platinum Package including helicopter flights to and from the Festival, VIP tickets and exclusive back stage tours to meet some of the bands and

chefs also available. This year’s event was soldout and Marcus, who’s been running the festival for the past 10 out of 34 years, says this one will be the best yet. “This is going to be one of the biggest and most entertaining festival to date, it really is one of the best days out in the country. The festival for us is about showcasing some of the world’s best wines, produce and entertainment to locals and visitors to the region. “We want people to celebrate all that Marlborough has to offer and have a brilliant day out at the 2018 festival.”

By Celeste Alexander A former Marlborough Boys’ College deputy head boy who recently became a fully-qualified practicing lawyer, says students should ‘give everything a go and take every opportunity’. Liam Stoneley says he always had a goal of studying law and he’s now ‘very pleased to get here’. He now works for Chapman Tripp in Auckland as a corporate lawyer. What’s unique about Liam is the two languages, Te Reo Maori and Chinese Mandarin, he studied during college. “I did some Chinese mandarin at MBC with teacher Barbara Song then a little more at university before going to Shanghai to study the language for one academic year. “I also majored in Te Reo Maori as part of my BA and now I’m part of Chapman Tripp’s Maori legal team as well as our China desk,” he says. Liam began his education at Whitney Street School, then Bohally Intermediate before MBC. He received the Dr John Innes Scholarship from MBC to study at University of Canterbury where on his second day,

Christchurch’s February 2011 earthquake hit. A number of students left the university he says, but he made the decision to stay. “I’m grateful for the chance to stay and experience what was an interesting time in Canterbury’s history.” Liam went on to graduate

with an arts degree majoring in Te Reo Maori and history. He completed his second degree in the Bachelor of Laws in 2015 before going to study Mandarin at Fudan University, Shanghai. Today Liam’s focus is his work in mergers and aquisitions as well as general commercial law.

By Cathie Bell The Queen Charlotte Yacht Club opened its sailing season with a celebration last Saturday. Club spokeswoman Christel Hopkins says a ‘vast, diverse crowd’ gathered at Shelley Beach on this sunny hot day for the season’s official opening, with young and old there to support the club. “After some words of the commodore Richard Gifford and a great speech from our mayor John Leggett, the traditional cannon was fired by Phil Chandler,” she says. “It provided an excellent soon to be replaced by competitive racing.” There was a great turnout on the day, Christel says, with a

diversity of yachts: traditional P class, Lasers, Paper Tiger, Finn, Topaz, Flying 15, 420, Starling, Splash and Optimists. Conditions were light Norwester with plenty of sunshine to make the spectators and sailors happy. The junior fleets sailed three races and the intermediate and senior fleets completed two races. After racing support craft and yachts packed away, there was time for a good catch-up and shared afternoon tea up in the old club house, Christel says. “It is going to be a great season with lots of exciting things in the pipeline. “Tom Mitchell from Britain joins the club as this season’s coach. He starts his coaching

sessions with the club sailors who signed up this week.” The first of the three-day Learn to Sail Courses for the season starts on Sunday, with another one to follow the next week of the school holidays October 8-10. “Two of the club’s junior sailors, Louie Poletti and River Hopkins, leave for Noumea with the New Zealand International Optimist Dinghy Association development team on 7 Oct, to participate in further coaching and an international regatta. “Then it is onto the America’s Cup parade on October 12 and 13. “Several of the club’s sailors, juniors or masters, will sail

this season in New Zealand and maybe overseas in classes: Laser, Optimist, P-class, and Starling. “Besides the InterIslander Optimist ranking regatta, Picton will also host the 2018 New Zealand International Optimist Dinghy Association Optimist Nationals at Easter.” Results • P-class/Topaz - River Hopkins • Open Fleet Optimist - Finn Stichbury • Green Fleet Optimist - Max Edwards • Starling/Splash - Emily Overend • Laser/420/Finn - Rob Burn • PT – Nigel and Kain Greenbank

Makos win The Tasman Makos beat the Southland Stags 50-17 in their match last Sunday afternoon at Trafalgar Park in Nelson, after leading at half-time by 33-5. Veteran player Robbie Malneek was called up to play game 103 for Tasman after Levi Aumua was suspended for three games.

Pigeon results The race pigeons of Blenheim club were at Christchurch again last Saturday and for the first time in what seems an age, had a beautiful day for their journey home. With no adverse wind either, times were fairly fast with the winning bird of Alister Cooper averaging 81 km/hr to its Renwick loft. A very good second position to the Two Fisher’s loft in Dillion’s Point with 79 km/hr and third to Chris Bensley close up on 76 km/hr. Ian McColm also of Renwick was next on 72 km/hr.

Good medal haul for Ruataniwha rowers

By Bill McElhinney Rowers from the Blenheim Rowing Club performed well at the New Zealand Masters rowing championships held on Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel, on September 16 and 17. Coach Kevin ‘Mouse’ Taylor said he was very proud of the rowers’ performances in what he said was, at times, a very condensed programme. “All the rowers performed well and came home with medals. It was a great effort. “Some races were very competitive and there were close finishes and some fast times recorded,” Kevin says. The standout performance of the weekend came from Sarah Lissaman, who won four

golds, three silvers and one bronze. Another top effort was by Mark Noble who won a bronze in the mens C grade single scull, despite being up against several of the country’s fastest masters scullers. Another standout performance was recorded by the womens quadruple sculls team of Veronica Best, Sarah Lissaman, Suzy Scorer and Jo Brady, rowing an amazing race and picking up a creditable silver medal in what Kevin says was a hotly contested event. Gold medals: Sarah Lissaman, Deb Hymers Ross, womens coxless pair. Suzy Scorer, Sarah Lissaman, Suzy Scorer, Jo Brady, womens A coxless quad sculls. Hawkesbury circuit a test for Harriers The Marlborough Harrier Club held the Prosser Cup event on the Hawkesbury Road circuit on Saturday. Conditions were excellent, going from warm to very warm during the race, publicity officer Les McKay says. “It is a deceptive course where everyone thinks it is flat, but it has a vicious, steady climb to the first

turnaround point,” Les says. The race had a sealed handicap where everyone received a handicap but was not told what it was until the results were published. “It kept everyone honest,” Les says.
