Book festival takes out top award Continued from page 1 Trustpower Community Relations Representative Abbie Siely says the award acknowledges the Marlborough Book Festival’s rapid rise, both in Marlborough and with book enthusiasts around the country. “The Marlborough Readers and Writers Charitable Trust began in 2014 when a couple of friends saw a gap in the region’s cultural calendar. They noted that many locals were either travelling away for readers and writers festivals, or simply not experiencing them. There was space in the national festival schedule for a winter event that would

bring Marlborough to life in the colder months and add to the region’s cultural diversity. “The vision was to give authors a wonderful weekend away, enjoying Marlborough’s hospitality, and to give audiences an intimate experience that would stimulate, inspire and entertain.” This vision has more than realised, Abbie says, with this year’s event the biggest yet. The festival has grown from six authors at three venues in its first year to 15 authors and journalists at six venues this year, with 1350 tickets sold across 20 sessions. “It is incredible to think that what was only an idea just a

few years ago has grown into such a respected and anticipated event,” Abbie says. She noted that judges are particularly impressed with the strong volunteering component in the group’s efforts. “With the exception of one part-time contracted event coordinator, brought on to help accommodate the festival’s huge success and growth, the entire weekend is organised and run by volunteers. It is the vision, initiative and determination of these people that has made the Marlborough Book Festival a highlight on the calendars of book lovers and authors alike.”

Go Joe! Crowds expected for big Picton parade By Bill McElhinney Picton Preschool teacher Samantha McGruddy will be taking her family down town on Thursday night to see home town hero Joseph Sullivan in the Picton America’s Cup parade. “It will be exciting,” Samantha says. “We’ll be there and so will heaps of others.” Yo u n g s t e r s a c r o s s Marlborough have been writing messages of support and congratulations on two donated sails, ready to be handed over to Joseph and his America’s Cup-winning team-mates tomorrow. “We ran out of room on the first sail so Kent Luxton and his team [at KJL Sails] donated a second one to us,” Picton Smart and Connected chair Chrissy Powlesland says. Young sailors from the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club will hold the sails during a

parade in Picton before giving them to Joseph. The street parade and welcome for Emirates Team New Zealand members bringing the ‘Auld Mug’ to the South Island starts at the London Quay/ Wellington Street waterfront area in Picton at 6pm tomorrow. Joseph and fellow cyclor crew member Andy Malloney and representatives from team management will be taken on the parade and then enjoy a formal welcome on the foreshore. There will be plenty of time for people to stay afterwards and picnic on the foreshore where there will be continuing entertainment. The Queen Charlotte Yacht Club is hosting a private breakfast the next day for the Team New Zealand sailors before they depart for the West Coast and later Kaikoura.

Port boss chosen Port Marlborough manager business delivery Rhys Welbourn is to become chief executive in December when CEO Ian McNabb retires, port company chairman Ed Johnson says. Ed says there is strong interest in the position, which attracted candidates from across New Zealand and internationally. “Rhys’ experience coupled with his strong understanding of the port company’s existing business, customers and opportunities provide clear advantage as he takes on this role. We congratulate Rhys on his appointment and look forward to working with him when he takes over the role in late December.” The staff and board of Simcox Construction, after the awards.

Mumps warning

Simcox wins big at business awards By Cathie Bell Simcox Construction has won the supreme award at the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce business excellence awards. The company, set up by Margaret and the late Ian Simcox in 1984, has the goal of ‘being the civil construction company of choice in Marlborough’, general manager Antony Clark says. In a series of emotional wins throughout the awards ceremony last Friday night, Antony paid tribute to Margaret and the

board’s efforts, saying that two and a half years ago, the company ‘had gone through hell’. Founder Ian was killed in an accident and it was only the foundation provided by Margaret to the board and management team that enabled the company to carry on their good work, he says. The company focuses on more than just the business, Antony says, and it invests in its team ‘for better lives for our people and our community’. Chamber president Nita van Grinsven says it has been a chal-

lenging year for Marlborough businesses. Despite that, the standard of entrants this year has been exceptional, she says. “It is fantastic to be celebrating the success of businesses in Marlborough… Your passion for your business, our region, and the future is inspiring.” Results: Supreme award: Simcox Construction Emerging business: Mag and Turbo Small and medium enterprise: NZ Home Loans

School holidays has brought a warning from health officials about mumps outbreaks, as people travel for vacations. Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service medical officer of health Dr Andrew Lindsay says while there are no current cases of mumps in the region, there were three cases in August and a mumps outbreak is ongoing in Auckland. “With school holiday-related travel involving people from, or locals returning from, other parts of New Zealand and overseas where mumps is present, it is possible that imported cases may appear in our district,” he says.

Hard workers rewarded By Cathie Bell Marlborough has recognised five people who have given enormously to the district through their volunteer work, and those recipients include for the first time two sisters. The recipients this year are Ross Beech, Glenda Robb, Melva Robb, Jim Thomas, and Henny Vervaart. Marlborough mayor John Leggett awarded the honours to recipients in a formal ceremony in the Marlborough District Council chambers last Friday afternoon. John says the honours are an opportunity to recognise those members of our community who give outstanding service to others. “The recipients use their skills and energy and give their time and talents to a myriad of

organisations and causes. They are serving us all by contributing to the greater good and each deserves our grateful thanks.” The awards are not given lightly, he says, and each recipient has given exceptional service to Marlborough. John says he believes this is the first time siblings have been awarded civic awards, with sisters Glenda and Melva Robb being honoured for their work with rural communities. He described Melva and Glenda as exemplars of ‘country woman – capable, competent, community spirited’. “They’re charitable in the best sense of the word – generous and compassionate. And they know how to organise and mobilise.”

Hospice welcomes new head

New Zealand actress Ali Harper plays singer Doris Day.

Ali brings her ‘Secret Love’ to Blenheim next week By Bill McElhinney Christchurch entertainer Ali Harper has spent years researching Doris Day, and even sang to her on her 94th birthday last year. Ali says she even visited her home in California. “I was at her 94th birthday celebrations last year where I got to sing and chat to her. Doris was standing on her balcony and the fans gathered below her house got to sing ‘Happy Birthday’. I had a moment where I sang the opening bars of her ‘Secret Love’ and Doris responded – to me! I am so happy that I got to talk to her.” Ali plays her lifelong hero in ‘A Doris Day Special’ which she is bringing to the ASB Theatre in Blenheim next Monday. “It’s my tribute to a very special woman,” Ali says. “I wanted to write a show in which people could feel an overwhelming sense of nostalgia through Doris’s music and films.” Ali is always pleased to come to Marlborough, which holds many happy memories for her. She was born in Blackwood Bay in the Marlborough Sounds. “My dad, Leon Harper, built the Boatels at Blackwood Bay,” Ali says. “We shifted to Christchurch when I was three, but spent many summer holidays back in the Sounds. It was always one of those trips when you keep saying:

‘Are we there yet!’” Ali has been touring her show around the country since May last year. Her husband, Iain, who transports the set for the show, spent a night sleeping in his vehicle several months ago when he got stuck in the snow on Lewis Pass. “I flew home, but poor Iain got stuck!” Ali says. “I needed to be home to look after our children, Archie, six, and Thomas, seven. When I get home after a show I make their school lunches before I go to bed. It keeps you grounded!” Ali’s show is presented as a “live” television special, complete with audience, cameras, a film/television screen and a sizeable wardrobe. “Doris Day has always been perceived as miss goody Two Shoes, Miss Happy Go Lucky, the girl next door, but there is so much more to her and it’s exciting to bring her story to the stage,” Ali says. “When I chat to audience members afterwards, they are all incredibly moved by what they learn about Doris Day – she had a full-on life with real heartache. “I just wanted to write a show that celebrated her as a Hollywood actress that we all know and love but also as a woman who survived so much and is still here today.”

By Cathie Bell Hospice Marlborough has welcomed its new general manager Nicki Kitson and she says the job is a ‘huge privilege’. She has moved from Southland, where her husband’s family are from, and was part of the team that set up and ran the hospice in Invercargill. Nicki has been in the job two weeks, and husband builder Bob is yet to move up here, as he is finishing work for longtime customers, but Nicki says it is ‘wonderful’ being here. “To be put in the caretaker role, which I think a manager is, taking care of staff and pa-

Don’t forget to have real conversations (not FaceBook, texts etc) with people, because one day they won’t be there.

Don’t be afraid to try different things. And see the world before you settle down.

I could say so much but it all comes down to this... There are 24 hours in every day so use them!

I’d say make better choices in life. And don’t always listen to what others say.

I’d say to any young person, take on a trade. Then you’ll always have a job.

Rubbish queries Dear Ed, Through your letters column and for the information of others like myself who try to keep Blenheim as free of litter as we can, I would like to ask Council these questions: • When discarding the Marlborough Express in the recycling bin does it need to be removed from the plastic wrapper in order for the paper to be recycled (ie if left in the wrapper is it then destined for landfill)? • Since the paper is unsolicited, and thrown onto the road verge (or, not infrequently the gutter) is it not simply ‘litter’ and should those responsible therefore be prosecuted? I ask these questions out of a genuine interest in improving our environment. Newspapers strewn along our suburban streets not only make the town look untidy; they all too often block our gutters and stormwater grilles. The Litter Patrol Marlborough Marlborough District Council solid waste manager Alec McNeil replies: “In terms of recycling we do receive them through the kerbside collection and we deal with them but it’s not ideal. Residents can now recycle ‘soft plastics’ through the recycling scheme at the supermarkets – PaknSave and New World are current participants with Countdown to follow in due course. In relation to litter this has been looked at by our legal team who offered the following feedback: When the newspaper is delivered by the MEX it is not litter. The definition of litter in the Litter Act is— ‘Includes any refuse, rubbish, animal remains, glass, metal, garbage, debris, dirt, filth, rubble, ballast, stones, earth, or waste matter, or any other thing of a like nature.’ Litter by its nature is something that is no longer wanted or of use. This is not the case with the paper at the time of delivery. Over time, it probably does become litter as it is not wanted or needed and is left where it was delivered. The offence in the Litter Act is depositing litter, or, having deposited it, leaving it in a public place. The person to whom it was delivered did not deposit it there so they are not liable for not picking it up. The MEX is arguably not liable because when they deposited the paper, it was not litter. Rather than take a legal stance, perhaps talking to MEX about making sure the papers are delivered onto private property and not onto public land and asking them to take part in clean-ups as a responsible party.”

Seniors dance Dear Ed, My congratulations to the planners and volunteers who organised the Sunday afternoon dinner dance. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, we all felt included, no matter what our disabilities. MC Ken Ham and his band had us toetapping and clapping, singing along with our familiar favourite songs of 1950s and 60s. Looking around, I was aware of how many other widows call Blenheim home. This event gave pleasure to many lonely people. Generous sponsors whose generous donations enabled participants to enjoy the day for a minimum ticket price, also deserve a bouquet. I look forward to attending this event again next year. Thank you all for your care and concern. Rosemary Francis Blenheim

Special service for baby, infant loss Gold Guitar Awards winner John Borcovsky Also performing is Danielle Coles. will perform at country music concert day.

Also performing is Rebekah-May Saussey.

Gold Guitar winner to perform at concert day By Celeste Alexander The Blenheim Country Music Club is bringing together another concert day for the public to enjoy on Sunday, October 15. Two of the club’s youngest performers, the ‘very talented’ Danielle Coles (14) and Rebekah-May Saussey (12) will be performing at the concert along with guest artist John Borcovsky.

A Gold Guitar Awards winner, John is thrilled to be coming to Blenheim to perform and says he ‘gets a great deal of fun and satisfaction from sharing music with others’. “Singing is a thing that was very much a part of my family when we were kids growing up. My mother was a very talented singer, in fact the whole family was. “My first taste of competition singing came

when I was a young school lad and after being introduced to the county music awards scene I’m still involved,” he says. Last year John won the 60+ Overall Trophy at the Gold Guitar Awards in Gore. The Concert Day will be held at the Redwoodtown School Hall from 2pm. The cost is $3 which includes afternoon tea, and all are welcome.

Open day for Picton rescue services By Celeste Alexander What exactly goes on behind the scenes at Coastguard Marlborough? If this is something you want to learn the answer to, then head along to an Open Day event being held at the Olgivie Lee Emergency Operations Centre at Picton Marina this Sunday. Coastguard Marlborough and St John’s Ambulance are once again opening their

doors for the public to come and have a look and see what they do. There will be a huge amount of fun and entertainment on the day including the inflatable Titanic for children to enjoy, boats, an ambulance and fire engine open to view as well as life buoy tossing. The Picton Volunteer Fire brigade will be on hand to meet the public as well as rescue teams and Marlborough Marine

Radio. There will be information on life jacket rules and the proposed Marlborough District Council marine bylaws and general rules of the road while out on the water. The whole family is welcome to attend and a sausage sizzle will be going throughout the event. The Open Day runs from 10am - 2pm.

By Celeste Alexander A special remembrance service will be held this coming Sunday for parents and families to come together and remember the lives of their babies who have died. Baby Loss Awareness Week runs from October 9-15 and finishes with the international Pregnancy and Infant Loss Day on the 15th. Marlborough families wanting to commemorate their babies are welcome to attend the Pregnancy, Baby and Infant Loss Support memorial service at Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors’ in the Sowman’s Lounge. The service starts at 6.30pm and the candle lighting will be at 7pm, as part of the global ‘Wave of Light’. Services held all around the world will be lighting their candles at 7pm and leaving them burning for one hour in memory of all the babies who ‘lit up our lives for such a short time’, SANDS Marlborough member Anna Simpson says. Anna joined SANDS after the stillbirth of her daughter Emjay 13 years ago and continues to be a support person to other families. “We acknowledge the lives and deaths of all babies, no matter what their gestation, length of life or how they died. Following the service there will be a balloon release and a shared supper.

Healthy living with Dr Libby 1. Is it possible to eat well and still meet our obligations in today’s fast paced world? I believe so yes. I don’t doubt for a second that it can be challenging to adjust the ways in which we have become accustomed to living to make space for better nourishment. The most common reasoning I hear is “I don’t have time”. When we use the excuse of “not having time” what we’re really saying is “that’s not a priority for me”. We always make time for things that we prioritise. The irony is, the better nourished we are, the better placed we are to meet our daily obligations. With better nourishment comes more energy, a higher resilience to stress, better quality sleep along with improved memory and cognitive function. Really, the question is, are we still able to meet our obligations in today’s fast paced world if we don’t eat well? 2. Why is food so challenging for so many people today?

I think the problem is twofold. We are bombarded with too much information and it is simply overwhelming. We’re told to make ‘healthy’ choices but that word can be used to describe anything from a low-fat yoghurt or packet of biscuits to a banana. On the other side of the coin, we’ve also lost faith in our body’s wisdom and we no longer trust that we can make decisions for ourselves that best support our health. When we don’t know who to trust, but we also don’t trust ourselves, it can make things incredibly complicated. 3. There has been a lot of new health information come out over the past few years, what is your advice on what to follow? I think we need to understand that science will continue to present new research and advancements in technology will continue to change current understandings. This is the nature of the beast, such as it is. We also need to be mindful that the information we’re reading comes from credible

y d o o W the Christmas Party! for your

sources. While research isn’t the be all and end all, when it comes to the biochemistry of the body for example, scientists will always have a better and more complete understanding than anyone else. So, if you are seeking external advice, choose wisely and then let your body be the judge. PBA

Dr Libby Weaver is a best selling author, speaker and nutritional biochemist and will be speaking in Blenheim on Monday the 16 th of October at the Marlborough Convention Centre Grand Hall. 42a Alfred Street from 7pm – 9pm. Tickets are $39.99 from www.drlibby.com

When it comes to keeping your business’s fleet on the road, having scheduled safety inspections is extemely important. The team at Blenheim Testing Station are on hand, six days a week to carry out Warrant of Fitness checks on any car, 4WD, motorcycle and trailer/caravan, so they can legally operate on public roads. Blenheim Testing Station is a NZTA certified Vehicle Testing Station and WOF inspections are

carried out to requirements set by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and supported by New Zealand law. The inspection only covers items required by NZTA to ensure that a vehicle is safe when on New Zealand roads. Items that concern maintenance, engine and gearbox condition, appearance and non-safety related items are not included in a WOF, but the team is happy to look at anything you have concerns about.

Making good decisions on safe travelling speeds and showing consideration for other road users will enable our community to navigate Marlborough roads safely. New Zealand Trucking Association executive officer Carol McGeady says bends, hills, side roads and narrow roads and bridges are just some of the challenges Marlborough drivers face. While you might be confident in your driving abilities, it is important to consider the needs of other drivers, and how your decisions might impact them, Carol says. “People need to be aware of the

capabilities of modern trucks,” she says. “They’re fast, they’re heavy and they cannot come to a stop or swerve to take evasive action quickly.” With a full load, truck drivers are advised to go 10 kilometers slower than the recommended speed on bends to prevent rolling. “It’s a simple message, but hugely effective.” Truck drivers are not the only people that need to play it safe on corners. Any vehicle that takes a corner too fast risks driving off the road

or crossing the centre line, putting themselves and other road users in danger. “If you cross the centre line on a blind corner, there’s no way of knowing if a 50 tonne truck is coming the other way,” Carol says. Marlborough youth will get an opportunity to sit behind the wheel of a big truck when the Safety MAN Road Safety Truck visits Marlborough schools at the end of the month. The aim is to educate youngsters on sharing the road safely with heavy vehicles, in hope the message will be passed on to drivers.

Transport Operators Work on State Highway 1 ramps up With less than three months to go before Christmas, crews working on State Highway 1 between Christchurch and Picton are working hard to complete a number of key projects that will enable the road to reopen and keep rail freight running on the Main North Line. Published by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), a report states that the initial stages of the project were driven by the need to

clear slips and get the MNL reopened. The rebuild of the highway began in earnest during the first part of winter and includes bridge repairs and building, seawall construction and road realignments, rock fall mitigation, tunnel repairs and fixing the highway. North of Kaikoura, seven of the 10 major slips that came down after the November 2016 earthquake are cleared and work continues to clear

the final three. This work should be completed by the next month, NZTA says. Here is a list of work that is underway at some of the critical sites. North of Kaikoura: Site 1 - (Mangamaunu) – now that the slips have been cleared, final road construction is underway. Site 2 - (Irongate) - a 144m long bridge is being built here, along with a retaining wall, seawalls and

a new road alignment. Site 6 - (Ohau Point) - this is the most challenging of the projects requiring retaining walls, seawall construction and road realignment. Site 7 - (Paparoa South) - another large seawall is being constructed here. Site 8- (Waipapa Bay) - this is one of the final (and the largest) of the slips that needs to be cleared. The warmer weather will allow clearing

of this slip to ramp up and then a temporary road realignment will be completed. Site 9 - (Wainui) - final slope stabilisation and road construction is underway. Tirohanga - major work is underway to construct new road and rail bridges and the associated earth embankments for the approaches.

inbrief Sports model heads for Las Vegas The Sun By Celeste Alexander Blenheim woman Alysha Powell has only been competing in the sport of body building for three months, but her success is sending her all the way to Las Vegas in five weeks. For Alysha, living a healthy lifestyle has always been important and now with her success as a fitness model it’s her goal to inspire as many people as she can to embrace clean eating and exercise. In her 20s she experienced stomach problems and after some investigation she was told it was likely she had irritable bowel syndrome. To combat the discomfort Alysha began clean eating and exercising regularly and managed to restore her health. She joined a gym which built her confidence and before long she was about to sign up for her first body building show. However her plans were put on hold as four weeks out from the show she fell pregnant with her son Hadleigh. Earlier this year she picked up those plans again and set a goal to compete as a sports model as the NABBA-WFF Top of the South Body Building competition held in August. She trained for nine weeks in the lead up and ended up placing first in the ‘Novice Tall Sports Model’

category. “Without a doubt I had the body building bug. I took on board the feedback from the judges and decided to compete at the South Pacific Natural Championships show in Taupo two weeks later,” she says. There Alysha won both of her categories, the Bikini Mumma (given birth within 24 months) and Sports Model. She also qualified for the Natural Universe at Sky City held two weeks ago in Auckland. This was an international event with competitors travelling from all around the world, but Alysha held it together to win the overall Bikini and Sports Model and the overall Sports Model, making her an INBA Sports Model Universe champion. This now qualifies her for the Natural Olympia in Las Vegas on November 9-12, only five weeks away. “I’m in total shock... it’s still sinking in. I never expected to progress so quickly,” she says. In addition to training for it, Alysha needs to raise around $8000 to cover the costs of travel and competing. To support Alysha’s bid to compete at Las Vegas, a Givealittle page has been set up to help her fundraise. Visit www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/alyshapowell Blenheim sports model Alysha Powell is heading to Las Vegas in five weeks.

Young gymnasts do well at Nelson competition By Bill McElhinney Four young Blenheim gymnasts who joined the Top of the South team to compete in the New Zealand Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Nelson at the weekend came away with medals. “It was a fantastic result,” coach Erica Ticehurst says. “The girls were competing against the top gymnasts in New Zealand, so we’re very happy with what they achieved.” The Blenheim girls were among the 400 gymnasts contesting the four-day championships. “They’ve been training hard all

year,” Erica says. The Top of the South team was made up of 15 female and six male members who competed in the vault, bar, beam and floor events. “Anna Tempero was placed second in the vault, second in the bar and third in the beam event,” Erica says. “She also took the Step 10 National Championship title. “Abby Webb was placed third in the vault and Astra Ticehurst took second place in the beam competition.” Anna will be heading to Singapore in November to represent New Zealand in all four events.

Supreme winners

By Cathie Bell The group behind the annual Marlborough Book Festival won the supreme award at last night’s Trustpower Community Awards. In three years, the Marlborough Book Festival has become a hugely successful event involving hundreds of people. For winning the Supreme Award, Marlborough Readers and Writers Trust receives a framed certificate, a trophy, and $1500 prize money. The group will represent Marlborough at the 2017 Trustpower National Community Awards in Queenstown next April.
