Spring fair By Cathie Bell Torrential spring rain hasn’t stopped Sue Boniface and Jim Stuart from growing thousands of plants for this weekend’s Linkwater School spring fair. The school usually has an art auction and fair over Labour Weekend, but this year, it will have a fundraising meal ‘Taste Outward Bound’ at Anakiwa and then a spring fair, specialising in plants, school board of trustees chairwoman Sarah Lightfoot says. The spring fair is ‘the place’ to get your garden’s plants, she says. “There is so much… it’s easier to say what there isn’t rather than what there is.” Continued on page 2 Pip Lightfoot, 7, and Sue Boniface with tomato plants Sue has grown for the Linkwater School spring fair on Saturday.

Spring rain fails to dampen school fair spirits Continued from page 1 Linkwater is half-way between Picton and Havelock on Queen Charlotte Drive, and Sarah says many people in Marlborough don’t know where it is. “It’s hard for us to believe, but there you are.” The school’s spring fair is an excellent opportunity to visit the village for the day, “have a great cup of coffee and some food and buy some plants at the fair and still have time to go on to the beach at Anakiwa”, she says. Usually, the school holds an art auction on the Saturday night of Labour weekend, followed by a ‘fun day’ and fair, but this year, the board has decided to change things around to make it easier for the school’s 20 ‘or so’ families. “We’re still having the fun day with all the old-fashioned games for children and families,” Sarah says. A massive plant sale and café will be the main fundraisers, she says. “Instead of having the art auction the night

before, which we normally have, this year we are having a meal at Outward Bound, called ‘Taste Outward Bound, with Marcel Rood’. There’ll be a bit of an auction too, but not as much art.” Tickets for the Friday dinner must be prepurchased, and can be arranged through the school office. The plants on sale at the school fair will be ‘the biggest and best array of vegetables’ in the district, Sarah says, many heirloom varieties that are hard to get anywhere else. Jim Stuart and Sue Boniface, who live in Linkwater near the school, have grown thousands of plants for sale at the school fair, despite torrential spring rains and a lack of sunlight this year. As well as vegetables, there will be natives, fruit trees, flowers, bedding plants, and herbs. “Rather than have a list of what we have, it’s easier to say what we don’t have.” • Linkwater School spring fair, Saturday October 21, 10am to 1pm.

Haka marks battles centenary By Cathie Bell Last Thursday was the 100th anniversary of the most bloodiest day in New Zealand’s modern military history, with 843 soldiers killed in a single day at Passchendaele in Belgium, and Marlborough Boys’ College students in Europe on a classics and history trip were right on the spot, marking the tragedy with heart-felt haka performances. The New Zealand Division spent a year in the conflict in Belgium, between 1917 and 1918, and 5000 young Kiwis died. October 12, 1917, at Passchendaele remains the highest one-day death toll suffered by New Zealand forces overseas. History teacher Matthew Clark, says the boys ‘did themselves and our community

proud’. “Whilst not on tour as a concert party, they wanted to perform a haka at Passchendaele. The haka they performed was full of passion and the sound of it reverberated across Tyne Cot Cemetery. “They received many compliments from those who witnessed it.” Classics teacher Peter Olliver says teachers and the 21 students found Passchendaele ‘incredibly moving’. “For many of the students, this was a highlight. “The hakas performed on several occasions had people in tears as they heard our tribute to those New Zealanders who had given their lives in service of our country.” The group arrive home late Marlborough Boys’ College students in Europe on a classics trip do a haka at Tyncot today. Cemetery to mark the 100th anniversary of the battle at Passchendele.

Third option proposed for colleges’ consideration

inbrief

The Sun

Man dies A man has died in a quad bike crash in Okiwi Bay in the Marlborough Sounds, police say. The man in his late 60s died after coming off his quad bike on an Okiwi Bay property about 11.45am on Saturday, police say.

By Cathie Bell The Education Ministry is choosing between only two options and it should look at other options, a Blenheim man says.

Crossing danger noted Students are in danger crossing State Highway Six at the corner of McLauchlan and Nelson Streets and options including traffic lights or an underpass should be considered, a report to the Marlborough District Council’s assets and services committee says. The committee meets tomorrow to discuss doing a safety investigation on the crossing.

Craig Basham.

Craig Basham says neither of the sites proposed for the co-location of Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ Colleges is ‘ideal’. The ministry has identified 225 Alabama Road, currently a vineyard, as its preferred site for the colleges to be moved to, while others, including the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce, say land at Waterlea Racecourse would be a better site. Craig says a third option could be what he calls ‘Wairau College’, co-locating the colleges on onto a combined campus of the existing Marlborough Girls’ College and Bohally Intermediate sites. Bohally Intermediate could be moved to the Marlborough Boys’ College site in Stephenson Street.

Sawdust removal

The combined land area of the merged sites on McLauchlan Street is approximately 13.8 hectares, which is over the stated minimum shared site requirement, he says. “The location has convenient green belt access via the Taylor river reserve accessing many parts of Blenheim without using surface roads. “The site is approximate-

ly 1.5 km from Lansdowne Park with its upgraded sports facilities and newlyadded netball courts and borders the green belts zones of Pollard Park and the Blenheim Golf Course and is accessibly located on SH6 and MacLauchlan Street and hosts an upgraded bus exchange on Nelson Street.” Neither of the officially preferred options has ser-

vices such as water or power in place, and both will need significant infrastructure to be supplied to the properties, Craig says. He works in engineering, and says both sites are in softer soil locations, requiring more extensive foundations. “It seems that this issue has gone around in circles for years and the two ‘preferred’ options are less

than ‘ideal’ with the budget proposed. Whereas, the Wairau College option can achieve all the project objectives, making the most of existing infrastructure and providing outstanding facilities for the region.”

The council has started removing contaminated soil under old sawdust stockpiles from a dumping spot on the berm of the upper Taylor River. The main area has been fenced off and signposted and people are asked to stay off the site until the affected soils can be removed, the ground tested and then capped with clean soil, a process which may take some weeks. The area was an unused section of the western river reserve, across from the old Blenheim landfill, where untreated sawdust could be dumped, and some contamination has been found in what is left of the remaining sawdust piles and the soil beneath them.

A potential option for the co-located colleges is to put it in McLauchlan Street.

By Cathie Bell A base for Marlborough Sounds-based conservation groups to call home has been set up in Picton. The Envirohub is a shared office and meeting space set up to provide environmental and conservation groups somewhere to work together to promote their efforts and for members to meet, based in a building on Picton’s Auckland Street, down by the railway station. Spokeswoman Tash Luxton says the Envirohub will be ‘by day’, an eco-retail centre to raise funds for the groups that have partnered to set up the Envirohub, and ‘by

night’, a meeting space that fits 40 people for workshops and the like. The space has been fitted out as locally sourced as possible, she says, and includes walls decorated with recycled pallets, wooden crates as shelving, and other re-used materials. Outside there is a vertical garden, growing herbs, and inside, there are books and information about nature, conservation, and the groups working in the region to improve the environment available for people to come and read, Tash says. “If anyone is looking to get inspired, the Envirohub

is here.” Partners in the Envirohub so far are the Marlborough Sounds Wildlife Recovery Trust, Conservation Kids, the Marlborough Sounds Restoration Trust, Forest and Bird’s Kiwi Conservation Club, the Picton Dawn Chorus, Te Atiawa, and Kaipupu Point wildlife sanctuary. The Envirohub is a ‘small but tangible’ step towards the groups’ big dreams, Tash says. It opened on Friday evening, and its first workshop was held on Saturday morning, with the Picton Dawn Chorus group holding a family day about trapping pests.

By Cathie Bell More than 100 Defence Force vehicles and trucks are moving from Christchurch to Omaka air field near Blenheim in a three-night manuoeuvre starting last night. The equipment is to be used in Exercise Southern Katipo 2017, which brings an international military force, government agencies, and aid groups to Marlborough. The exercise sees the district become ‘Becara’ with Havelock standing in as an oil refinery under attack, people being evacuated, and then transported to Nelson over Labour weekend. This week, military personnel set up camp in Omaka, and exercise head Lieutenant Colonel Martin Dransfield met Marlborough mayor John Leggett on

Monday to talk through the impact on the district. The first sign will be ‘a lot’ of military vehicles and people in town, he says. Each night for the next three nights, convoys of up to ten vehicles will leave Burnham at 6pm in ten minute intervals and the last convoy will arrive in St Arnaud by 2am. The next day they will make the final hour-long trip to Omaka leaving mid-morning. There are planned rest stops in townships along the way such as Culverden, Springs Junction and Murchison. Transport Agency Journey Manager Tresca Forrester says people on the alternate Picton to Christchurch route during the night from Wednesday this week need to take extra care and be patient.

Segway gives Lisa better mobility By Celeste Alexander Blenheim woman Lisa Wheeler has mobility issues due to her Multiple Sclerosis and finds it tiring to stand or walk for long periods of time. She describes her MS as an ‘invisible disorder’ which to others can’t be identified so when she began trialling a mini Segway recently, a negative comment about why she wasn’t ‘using her legs’ has prompted her to speak out. “Last Thursday I went along to a business meeting and obviously attracted some attention, and it was during a conversation that someone mentioned that ‘legs work just as well’. “I felt I had to explain that it wasn’t a toy and that my legs don’t work as well as others because of my MS. “It was fine afterwards but I’d like to remind people of tolerance and that things aren’t always as they appear. “As humans we are always looking for what’s different or similar to ourselves, but we need to realise that not all conditions or illnesses are visible,” she says. Lisa was diagnosed in 2002 but says the past two years have been the most difficult. She describes the feeling as her legs being ‘filled with concrete’, taking more effort to move them. While she remains positive and upbeat about her MS, the former half marathon runner and sports enthusiast says mobility can be an issue in everyday life. “What’s been wonderful about trialling this mini Segway is that I’ve enjoyed the freedom. “I can manouvre around the house easily, it fits into my car boot and can be taken anywhere... it’s opened up more possibilities,” she says. Brushing teeth could be a winner Staff at the Community Oral Health Service are using a photo competition during November to encourage parents to be more involved in their children’s tooth brushing. To enter, families enrolled at the community oral health clinic submit a photo of their child brushing their teeth and they will go in the draw to win a family oral health basket. Entrants are also encouraged to provide their children’s answer to the question, why do we brush our teeth? The photos will be displayed in

decorative frames on the clinic waiting room walls. Oral Health Educator Heidi Owers came up with the competition as a fun way to strengthen the partnership with families and whanau and to get parents involved in brushing their children’s teeth. She also hopes it will make the oral health clinic waiting room more inviting. Send photo and answers to Heidi.Owers@nmdhb.govt.nz by 30 November.

It was never a problem until two years ago. Now I’m having to take pills to keep sinus at bay.

I’m lucky, it doesn’t bother me, but my daughter suffers. There’s a lot of pollen around.

I was brought up out in the country, on a farm, so I’ve developed an immunity.

My Mum really suffers at this time of the year, but I’m lucky, it doesn’t bother me.

Yes it does bother me. I get hay fever and sinus. It’s a nuisance.

Hating the quotation Dear Ed, The quote on page 2 of the Friday Sun is possibly the worst advice I have ever read. “It is not important what you believe, only that you believe” (author unknown). This anti-truth statement is not something that people should abide by, let alone a journalist!

This statement is a reflection of all that is wrong with our society. It is what radicalizes people to become terrorists. I suggest that you publish a retraction and an apology to all your readers. Ryan Lock via email

Molesworth poison drop Dear Ed, I notice a newspaper advertisement about an aerial 1080 possum control operation for Molesworth station. Molesworth is public land and the Department of Conservation administers it as a farm. As I understand there is only one farm in Marlborough with bovine TB. Does that not say something very telling about DOC? The advertisement is by TB Free New Zealand and Vector Free Marlborough Limited, a New Zealand limited company. based in Nelson. Who is behind Vector Free

Pat Fong Blenheim We live up near the Wither Hills and there’s lots of pollen about, so I take an antihistamine every day.

Marlborough? TB Free is OSPRI or the old Animal Health Board. Why is New Zealand aerially dumping 1080 on public lands for possum control? New Zealand is TB free now since the international guideline is to be below 0.2% infection in cattle on slaughter as I understand. New Zealand’s infection rate is a very low 0.01 % so I am told. 1080 is a broad spectrum poison killing anything living - insects, birds, animals, invertebrates like frogs. Don Coyote Blenheim

They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even when a nom de plume is provided for publication. Please note that your name and street address MUST be provided with emails.

A call to stop the misuse of place names An easy way for a correct place name to be lost is for frequent use of an incorrect one. Three examples: ‘The Forum’ in Blenheim, the ‘Old Picture Theatre’ in Havelock and ‘The Domain’ in Havelock. When a new restaurant was built upstairs in the rebuild of the area in the centre of Blenheim it was called The Forum, where people were encouraged to gather and eat and talk. The centre of Blenheim where the band rotunda is located is correctly called Market Place, not The Forum. A recent article in a local paper referred to a building in Havelock being used by the theatre company as being the old disused picture theatre. This building was built as, and still is, the Havelock Town Hall, as the sign on the front says. The third example is the Domain. This area is adjacent to lower Neil Street in Havelock. When I was young it was home

to the RSA building and the motor camp, which only went as far as the creek. The mudflats were reclaimed using soil from slips and road widening on the Mahakipawa Hill. This is now the sports field. The correct name for this area, which includes the sports field, courts Pavilion and the relocated names of the fallen, is the War Memorial Park, as the relocated sign reads. This sign used to be on two large pillars close to the main road. It was erected earlier around the time the RSA building was placed down at the far end. It was never called the Domain. Since the early 1950s, when it was formed, it has been the War Memorial Park. I suspect that some of the use of incorrect place names arises from lack of knowledge or lack of research. Concerned.

Winston Peters.

Not missing them Dear Ed, I do wish the TV newspeople would stop complaining about the coalition negotiations going on and on. To me, it’s quite restful not having a government and I wish the current situation would go on a bit longer. I don’t know why people are so upset, the country is doing fine without a government. More power to Winston Peters’ arm! Take as long as you like. Happy punter Blenheim

New port boss sees great future

By Bill McElhinney Port Marlborough business delivery manager Rhys Welbourn is excited about his new role. In December Rhys will take up the role of Chief Executive Officer, replacing current longserving CEO Ian McNabb, who is retiring at the end of the year. The port, one of the busiest in the country, is owned by the Marlborough District Council company MDC Holdings, and last year had a revenue of $25.85 million. Rhys has been in his current role with the port company for the past two years, but worked with the company previously before leaving to take up a scholarship at Cranfield, one of the top universities in the United Kingdom. A year of full time study earned him an MBA - Master of Business Administration. He returned to New Zealand for an executive role at Port Timaru before being lured back to Marlborough. ”I really feel this is where my home is,” Rhys says. Originally from Yorkshire, England, Rhys has been in New Zealand for the past 15 years and became a citizen in Marlborough. Rhys took his family, wife Hon-

our, son William, and daughters Bess and Elsie to Britain with him when he went to study, and they also spent some time in France, where Rhys’ parents now live. “But we all wanted to come back to New Zealand, back to Marlborough,’ he says. Honour teaches at Rapaura School, where Bess and Elsie are pupils, and the family live close by in Hammerichs Road. The family love outdoor pursuits, Rhys says. He plays football for Redwood Tavern Masters, and son William has followed his Dad. Rhys sees exciting times ahead for the port company as it strives to serve the best interests of the community and the region. “We’re always conscious of our social and environmental responsibilities,” he says. “We have the port of Picton, where the interisland ferries come and go, the deep water port at Shakespeare Bay, and our marinas at Picton, Waikawa and Havelock. “The hoki fishing fleet still works out of Picton, and of course aquaculture is a major industry for us. There’s a lot happening and a lot to look forward to!”

Marine & Watercraft owner Pete Walters is holding a demonstration this weekend for his new Weber BBQ range.

Grills hot for demo day By Celeste Alexander The grills will be fired up at Marine & Watercraft this Saturday during a ‘Weber’ demonstration day held by owner Pete Walters. Pete is happy to announce that Marine & Watercraft has been appointed Marlborough’s only Weber specialist dealer and to celebrate, a range of models will be fired up between 10am - 2pm. “We are known for choosing only premium products so adding the Weber range to our stable complements this nicely. Many people own BBQs and when looking for a product that lasts the proof of time, there was only one answer ... the Weber,” Pete says. One of the biggest drawcards of the Weber is the ‘flavour’ it gives

to food, he says. “If you are already a Weber user, then you’ll be aware of the fabulous tastes and flavours that the Weber gives you. If you haven’t had the pleasure in owning one, make sure you pop down and see what makes this such a well known and recommended brand. “At Saturday’s launch we will be cooking roast pork, lamb, pizzas, steak, chicken and even chocolate brownies on some of our Weber models. With the Weber, it really is a case of ‘tasting the difference’,” Pete says. There will be promotions and giveaways during the launch including the chance to win your money back on your Weber purchase. PBA

Time to stop clowning around Matthew set up and pack down his magic shows. “He gave up the magic when he was 14, and I thought it was a shame to waste the props he had, so I became Pom Pom the Clown. “I learned how to make balloons into animals and I learned basic magic tricks out of library books,” Sandra says. For years she did birthday parties, Christmas functions, shows for elderly people, but more recently several health setbacks have curtailed her activities. “A bad leg and several other injuries have made it harder for me to carry around my props, to set up, to pack up,” Sandra says.

“I’d like to pass it all on to someone else who was interested. “They don’t have to be Pom Pom, or even be a clown. “It just has to be someone who loves children, who loves entertaining them. “And you need to be able to control a crowd of children as well. “Someone with teaching experience would probably manage it well. “I’m happy to mentor someone, to pass on my skills, to teach them some basic magic. It’s very rewarding. “It’s a real thrill when, at the end of a show, some of the kids come up and say: ‘Pom Pom, you’re really magic!’”

Sandra McNeilly and her puppet friends have been entertaining children for the past 16 years.

By Bill McElhinney If you want to know how to make dreams come true, talk to Ben Morris. Ben has always wanted to be a pilot, and last week, after years of hard work, the 20-year-old earned his commercial pilot’s licence. When he was a youngster, Ben took many flights on Sounds Air with his father, Chris, who commuted from their Picton home to a business in Wellington. “At one stage he was Sounds Air’s most frequent flier,” Ben says. Ben joined the Marlborough Aero Club in 2007 and learned to fly while holding down a job helping load and unload the interisland ferries. The nature of his job, which involves shift work, didn’t stop Ben from pursuing his flying dream. He studied and trained over a period of six years to get his pilot’s licence, and then set his sights on obtaining a commercial licence. “I paid as I went,” Ben says. “From start to finish it has probably cost me between $55,000 - $65,000, but at least I don’t have any debt. “The people at the Aero Club have been very supportive;

they’re like a big family. “They’re great.” “Ben is also our club captain,” says Aero Club administration manager Raylene Wadsworth, “which is a great achievement for a 20-year-old.” Getting a commercial licence is an expensive business, and friends of Ben who have trained at professional flying schools have student debts of up to $100,000. Ben also had to make a lifestyle change to become a commercial pilot. “I had to lose more than 90kg,” he says with a grin. “You have to pass a medical, so I changed my diet, did more exercise, and got down from 182 kg to 90kg. “It took a couple of years, though.” Ben has now set his sights on his next goal, which is to become a flying instructor. He has started on his study and exams, and hopes to be qualified within the next four or five months. “My goal is to be a flying instructor with Sounds Air,” he says. “I’d love to fly the Cessna Caravans and teach others how to fly. Any Cessnas are good to fly, but the Caravan is the best.”

Exhibition honours a lifetime of art By Bill McElhinney Marlborough artist Lorna Clarke, 93, began her artistic career as a child, drawing mostly with school crayon on brown paper bags and cardboard. Last Friday, friends and fellow artists gathered at the Yealands Estate Gallery in High Street for the opening of an exhibition featuring 60 years of Lorna’s work.

“In 1969 I was elected to be an Artist Member of the NZ Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington.” Included in the exhibition are some paintings from Lorna’s personal collection by renowned Marlborough artist the late John Parker and works by Blenheim artist Keith Reid, who at one stage was Lorna’s tutor. Lorna’s family lived in Rai Valley, where her father was a builder, and as a youngster she got a lot of encouragement about art from sawmill owner Charlie Bryant, who had been an art student at Canterbury University. “When we lived in Nelson I went to Nelson Central School where we did a lot of pencil drawing,” Lorna says. “I went to Marlborough College in 1936 and John Oakley was our art master. “My first job on leaving college was ticket writer for J R McKenzie. When this job was mechanised, I did the window dressing.

“I then went to Masterton and ended up working in the Wairarapa Steam Laundry office till the end of the Second World War. “Meanwhile I met Bruce, my future husband, in Masterton. “He had just returned from four years as a prisoner of war in Germany. “I was not doing any art at this time but I decided to train as a hairdresser in Wellington. “I moved back to Blenheim in 1944, and my parents set me up in the Vogue Salon in Maxwell Road and Bruce and I got married in 1946, when Bruce was working for Safe Air. “I started going to weekend schools and night classes. “I went to weekly oil painting classes with Robert Chilvers. “In 1961, I was a foundation member of the Marlborough Art Society. “We had meetings in Arthur Street (where McKendry’s are now, opposite Countdown). “I became the tutor of the Tuesday Chinese painting class. “This was the beginning of the regular art society day classes. Peter Jenkins, Doreen Blyth, Judy Woolley, Vai Yealands, Thelma Barrett (who was also a potter), Diana Mickell all went to these classes. “I tutored the class for 40 years,” Lorna says. “In 1969 I was elected to be an Artist Member of the NZ Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington, although I did not take up the opportunity to exhibit there. “The Art Society held its first

exhibition in the Town Hall in 1970. Exhibiting artists included John Parker and myself. “ John’s entry was a big sensation. People talked about it for years,” Lorna says. “In 1970 I painted a series of oils of views of Blenheim at night. “One of these is the painting of the Palace theatre in Market Street

which Helen Ballinger now owns. “In the late 1970’s, a group of us went to Keith Reed’s art classes at Marlborough Boys College as mature students. “I sold my work casually from home to interested visitors. “Bruce had a long retirement from Safe Air and began a picture framing business in the workshop

at home where he framed my work and the work of other artists, including John Parker. “In the early 2000’s I was an art tutor for classes at Marlborough Boys’ College for three to four years, teaching one day a week.” Lorna was awarded life membership of the Marlborough Art Society in 1993.

Health setback hasn’t kept Gavin off the airwaves who passed on the news that the government has decided people over 60 will no longer qualify for a kidney transplant. “It’s age discrimination,” Gavin says. “I was really depressed after getting this news. “But I decided in the end to get on with my life.” So the former real estate agent, who retired in 2011, is now volunteering with Marlborough Marine Radio. Gavin has had a life-long interest in amateur radio and can chat to people around the world via his 1kW radio transmitter. He is one of the volunteers who once a week does a 7am to 10pm shift monitoring boat traffic within the wider Marlborough Sounds area. Marlborough Marine Radio now has some 2000 members who subscribe to the service, and seven operators, who monitor the four Marine Radio-owned stations. The organisation owns ma-

rine channels 01, 05, 63, 65 and 66 which operators use to give regular weather forecasts, monitor trip reports, and help with medical assistance. Marlborough Marine Radio members are supposed to log their position when leaving a place and when arriving at their destination, so that if anything goes wrong, Search and Rescue can be alerted and can respond quickly, Gavin says. “If a skipper hasn’t logged a boat’s position for some time after it was supposed to arrive at its destination, and doesn’t respond on the radio, we can call the police and initiate a search,” Gavin says. Boaties who forget to log out with the Marlborough Marine Radio are a headache for search and rescue teams, and with the summer coming, marine radio operators hope there won’t be unnecessary rescue missions because boaties are having too much fun on the water and forget to log in, Gavin says. Marlborough Marine Radio volunteer Gavin Piercy logs another trip report.

Preparing for the next step of a driver’s licence can be a daunting task, but with help from the abundance of tools available, it can be achievable. While driving instructors and lessons with fully licenced family members are a great source of help, there are also many resources available online for free. The New Zealand Transport Agency and ACC created an online website and learning tool to help young drivers achieve their driving test goals and become confident drivers. It also has tools for licenced family members who are teaching their young drivers to drive. The website was established to equip young drivers with the knowledge and understanding of what makes a great driver, arming them with more confidence on the roads. Within the website, there is a range of tools to help young drivers, including interactive modules providing information for people going for the theory-based learners licence, those learning to drive, those preparing for the full test, or for those who are teaching someone else to drive. By Bill McElhinney Gavin Piercy got the bad news in 1986: his kidneys were failing and would get worse as time went on. “It was a shock,” Gavin says. “There was no obvious cause, it’s just the luck of the draw.” Since the diagnosis, Gavin’s condition has worsened and his kidney nephritis means he now has to undergo peritoneal dialysis. A tube into his stomach is used to take a special fluid into his abdomen. This fluid removes toxins associated with kidney failure and is pumped out again with a special machine, which sits beside his bed and is hooked up every night. Gavin had hoped for a kidney transplant. “The best match would have been my sister,” he says, “but unfortunately she had cancer.” He has been waiting for a transplant for years, and was ‘very upset’ to get a call from his kidney specialist,

Fifty-one illustrious years, hundreds of famous local faces. The Marlborough Sports Awards has gone from strength to strength throughout its long, colourful history. Some famous Marlburians who have been honoured at the awards include WRC Rally co-driver, John Kennard, All Black, Anton Oliver, and Olympic Gold winning rower Joseph Sullivan who has been awarded Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year three times. Introduced in 1967, the first awards were held at the Centennial Stadium while the Blenheim Round Table was still in its ‘apprentice’ table status which is why the Sports Awards are 51 years old this year. “In those days, table members cooked the food

and served the meals to the table, too,” says Chris Black, Round Table’s Marlborough Sports Awards organiser. “The event used to be much longer, the awards ceremony has been known to last more than four hours.“

“We have definitely streamlined the award process over the last few years, the cooking is probably better too,” he says. The awards have always had strong community support, and this year is no exception. This year’s

event takes place at Marlborough Convention Centre on November 20 and has guest speaker, threetime Sportsperson of the Year, Joseph Sullivan and TV One newsreader Peter Williams will MC.

Have a look at Marlborough's Wikipedia page, under the heading 'Events and Points of Interest' you will find Blues, Brews and BBQ's - the first weekend of February. For more than twenty years, this has been true, but it may be that Blenheim's Wikipedia page needs to be updated. The festival started in Blenheim in 1992, the brainchild of Peter Baker, Tony Troon, Mark Peters, Bill Brook and Alan Corski. The combination of boutique beer, gourmet barbecue, and toe-tapping Blues music proved to be a popular one for Marlburians, the event selling out consistently in its first decade of life. Competitions for best BBQ, best leaner, best dressed and more recently, best homebrew beer always had a large variety of entries and most Blenheim locals will

have fond memories of baking in the often 30-degree sun wandering from beer tent to beer tent. Like all good things, it couldn't last forever and the event came under fire from many angles. With increased rules and regulations along with dwindling num-

bers and profits, the event’s feasibility has become questionable. Nevertheless, many great memories, and hundreds of thousands of dollars were made in Marlborough for the community from this event that was once a staple of Blenheim summer.

Round Table is an international organisation which presents many opportunities for travelling the world, Round Table style. In 2015, Jason Walker, then Blenheim Round Table president, travelled to Visby on the Island of Gotland, Sweden for the International Round Table AGM.

In 1927 the Duke of Windsor, then the Prince of Wales, made a speech at the British Industries Fair, which proved to be a catalyst for a movement. He said, "The business and professional men of this country must get together 'round the table, adopt methods that have proved so sound in the past, adapt them to the changing needs of the times, and wherever possible, improve them." Louis Marchesi, seeing a need for a group with the emphasis on young men, community and service, was inspired and thus Round Table was born with the motto 'adopt, adapt improve.'

Five days of meetings, two themed shirt nights, 'nation' night and a gala were just some of the events Jason took part in. "I was shagged," says Jason, "but it was an amazing oncein-a-lifetime experience, I would do it again in a heartbeat." There are many opportunities for travel within New

Blenheim Round Table was the 30th club to be chartered into the Association of Round Table New Zealand and was formed by an extension from the Nelson Round Table. The inaugural meeting was held on May 23, 1966, under the chairmanship of Nelson's Hugh Price - who later became national president. A year later, after serving its 'apprenticeship' under the wing of Nelson Round Table, the Blenheim club was officially chartered. The founder chairman, Barry Holmes, remained a member right up until 1982. Most people in Marlborough will have either giv-

Service for babies By Celeste Alexander Candles were lit, balloons released and memories shared at Sunday’s special remembrance service held by Sands Marlborough (Pregnancy, Baby and Infant Loss Support). The service was held as part of Baby Loss Awareness Week (October 9-15), hosted by Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors in Blenheim. Families gathered and shared in the Wave of Light service in what Sands Marlborough members described as being a ‘heartfelt service and a lovely way to remember our babies’. Around 50 people took part including parents remembering their children from over 40 years ago, Anna Simpson says. “As sad as it is to see more numbers coming along each year, it warms the heart knowing people can come and share publicly to remember their babies. “It doesn’t matter how recent or long ago your loss was, everyone is welcome,” she says.

Members and friends of Sands Marlborough: Anna Simpson, Jenny Andrews, Sandra McNeilly, Debbie Adams, Monica Beaver, Kate McEntee, Debra Hennessy, and Sandra Remick-Sangster.

‘We are one in four’ By Celeste Alexander Those visiting Pollard Park in the near future will notice a beautiful forget-me-not flower bed display on the ‘pictorial bank’ by the rotunda. Sands Marlborough has its logo in full bloom, perfectly timed with Baby Loss Awareness Week

(October 9-15). Members and friends of the organisation gathered last Friday for a photograph. “We are one in four women who are affected by loss, including miscarriage and still birth,” they say. Council gardener Kate McEntee,

who is also a Sands member, is part of the team that designs the annual garden. She says occassionally a community group approaches the council to have their logo incorporated, and because she is a Sands member she designed the current garden.

“My team approved it for winter planting and because I had gone on maternity leave by then, the team expertly put my design together and did an amazing job,” she says. The garden will be in place until the summer planting takes place towards the beginning of December.

Love your bones October 20 is World Osteoporosis Day and the message of the 2017 campaign is for people of all ages is to ‘Love Your Bones: Protect Your Future!” Through early prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis, millions of men and women all over the world can reduce their risk of painful, debilitating and lifethreatening fractures. What is osteoporosis? Our bones are complex living tissue comprised of a thick outer shell (known as the cortex) and a strong inner honeycomb mesh of tiny cross-members (known as the trabeculae). This structure enables our bones to be strong, lightweight and somewhat flexible. These properties are important because they allow our skeletons to support us while being able to cope with the stresses and strains that we impose upon them in the course of day-to-day life. During the first two decades of life our skeleton grows, reaching what is termed Peak Bone Mass – the point when our bones are at

their most dense – in our early 20s. In the middle period of life, a continual process of repair is ongoing which ensures that old worn-out bone is replaced by fresh new bone. In later life – or when specific medical conditions occur in people in their middle years – the balance between old bone being broken down and new bone being made can be lost. When this happens the total amount of bone in the skeleton begins to decline and bones become more fragile. This is particularly common for women who have experienced menopause, because oestrogen plays an important role in maintaining the balancing act of this process known as bone remodelling. For significant numbers of men it should be noted that, after 70 years of age, loss of bone density is also an issue. When a person’s bone density drops below a specific level a diagnosis of osteoporosis will be made.

Five steps to healthy bones and a fracture-free future 1. Exercise regularly Weight-bearing, muscle-strengthening and balance-training exercises are best. 2. Ensure a diet rich in bone-healthy nutrients Calcium, vitamin D and protein are the most important for bone health. Safe exposure to sunshine will help you get enough vitamin D. 3. Avoid negative lifestyle habits Maintain a healthy body weight, avoid

smoking and excessive drinking. 4. Find out whether you have risk factors Bring these to your doctor’s attention, especially if you’ve had a previous fracture or have specific diseases and medications that affect bone health. 5. Get tested and treated if needed If you’re at high risk you will likely need medication to ensure optimal protection against fracture.

Raupo rebrands to ‘Saveur’ One of Blenheim’s popular dining location, Raupo Riverside Cafe & Restaurant has been rebranded by its owners Stephane Ughetto and Taryn Gilbert. The couple purchased the business three years ago and are now making their own unique mark by rebranding and renovating. “Our new name is Saveur, which is French for flavour,” Stephane says. While these changes are exciting and will compliment the café’s riverside location, much will still be the same, they say. “What is important is for people to know that 85 percent of what we are doing will be the same. “The same smiling, friendly staff and style of dining. It’s

more the visual appearance that’s changing,” Stephane says. When Stephane and Taryn took over the business they gradually made subtle changes along the way, but are now putting their final stamp on it. They say the idea ‘really came to life’ when they ran themed nights over winter. “When we had the tables decorated it hit home for us how successful a French theme would be. “We had French style runners on the tables and it looked beautiful... just little touches here and there. “We asked the advice of previous owners Marcel and Helen Rood who we are good friends with, and they were so excited

for us and have been really supportive which is fantastic,” Taryn says. Of all the changes, the real star of it all will be the French influence on the menu and decor. “All of the changes we’ve made over the past three years is now brought together with an authentic French influence... paying homage to Stephane’s French heritage,” Taryn says. Inside, there’s an upstairs dining space which has been been renovated to ‘open it up’, allowing diners to enjoy the outside view of the river and allow more natural light in. Iron bars have been incorporated into this room’s look to create what Stephane describes

as ‘mezzanine dining’. “It looks and feels much brighter, while still functioning as a private dining area if required,” he says. The furniture has been refreshed with new chairs being ordered in which are both comfortable and have a French flair, and little decor touches throughout the café bring the theme together. “If you want French, you know where to come. “We’ve essentially combined the café, bistro and patisserie together and we encourage people to come and see it for themselves,” they say.

Thanks for letting us be part of the Saveur revamp!

...with a brand new name

A love affair with food Stephane Ughetto and Taryn Gilbert first met when working abroad and with their combined passion for the hospitality industry, the opportunity to purchase Raupo Café was a ‘great opportunity’. “We’ve both been in hospitality for 15 years and had a vision of owning a restaurant. “It’s what we know and love and we do it because we have that passion,” they say. Stephane who is from France’s Cote du Rhone wine region and

Taryn who is from Blenheim, took over the business after only months after moving to Marlborough and set about introducing the French culture. A subtle French theme was introduced to the evolving menu, all the while using kiwi produce and supporting local suppliers. “It’s always been our aim to give our customers a range of options using local produce, but by having a French influence we are able to provide something that’s a little

different and unique to us,” Stephane says. The café is a popular destination as it offers a range of seating options, including a stunning outside terrace area overlooking the river. Inside there’s an inside dining area and upstairs a separate dining area can be enjoyed and booked for private dining. For group bookings and private events, so speak to staff about what they can do for your next special celebration.

Women win The Tasman Makos women’s rugby team has won its first game in the Farah Palmer Cup national championships, beating Hawkes Bay 24-12 at Trafalgar Park in Nelson last Saturday.

Cricket cup win Marlborough Cricket’s senior representative team didn’t come back from the national championships in Napier with the Chappell Cup, but they got the next-best, coming home with the Cave Cup.

Pigeon race results The Marlborough Sports Hall of Fame and Roll of Honour inductees at Monday’s ceremony.

Top sporting efforts honoured

By Cathie Bell Marlborough’s top sportsmen and women, coaches, and officials were honoured as 33 people were inducted into the Sports Roll of Honour and nine into the Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Blenheim on Monday evening. The ceremony, held by Sport

Tasman and the Marlborough District Council, honours Marlburians who have represented their sport at national and international level. Mayor John Leggett says there is a long list of nominations, reflecting the high calibre of sports people in the district. In particular, there has been an

‘outstanding year on the water’, he says, with an outstanding crop of sailors and rowers. “It is good to see the first mention of what many call an art form rather than a sport, ploughing.” John says it is an inspiration to see so many people engaged in sport, starting young and staying

with it to masters grades or getting into coaching. Sport Tasman trustee Brian Dawson says the awards, which started in 1993, are written in an official book at the Blenheim public library.

After last weeks race being cancelled due to inclement weather it was a complete reversal for the Blenheim clubs racing pigeons on Saturday 14, and with the race point being Timaru a distance of just short of 400 km, good conditions enabled the birds to achieve some fairly quick times, with the winning bird to the Renwick loft of Alister Cooper with a speed of 78 km/hr. Next into second place, Two Fishers loft whose pigeon recorded 76.5 km/hr followed closely by Chris Bensley’s bird on 76.2 km/hr. Then Ian McColm’s bird with 75 km/ hr and Donald Morrison on 74 km/hr.

Sir Richard highlights new book By Cathie Bell Si r R icha rd Hadlee visited Marlborough as part of a national tour promoting his book on the 1949 tour of Britain, based on his father’s diary, to find that tour was important here too. Blenheim’s George Cresswell was part of that tour, and nephew Scott Cresswell joined the gathering of about 40 people who came to listen to Sir Richard speak about his book at Marlborough Cricket’s clubrooms last Thursday night. The gathering included a group

of young cricketers, who weren’t old enough to remember seeing Sir Richard play. They said they were keen to get bowling tips from a master, as well as to learn more about the sport’s history. The book, ‘The Skipper’s Diary’, is based on the diary kept by team captain Walter Hadlee during the eight-month-long tour of war-torn England. Walter died in 2006, and both father and son had distinguished cricketing Sir Richard Hadlee with his new book, and young cricketers George Burton, Tom Leonard, Ben Holdaway, careers representing New Zealand. Dylan Burton, and Tim Petrie.

Cup walkabout

Picton’s favourite son Joseph Sullivan carries the America’s Cup during a parade through his hometown to celebrate Team New Zealand’s victory. Joseph, along with fellow Marlburians Simon van Velthooven and Scott Fyffe, walked the cup down High Street and along London Quay, giving people the chance to get up close and personal with the cup. The parade, organised by the Picton Smart&Connected group, is one of the ‘Heartland Tour’ parades around regional New Zealand to celebrate New Zealand’s sailing prowess. Photo by Richard Briggs.
