Ticket scam Online site rips off theatre goers

By Bill McElhinney Marlborough ASB Theatre goers are being ripped off by an overseas-based scam charging exorbitant prices for tickets that may have been sold multiple times. The scammers are also targeting other theatres throughout the country, manipulating the Google search engine so that their site is the first one ticket buyers are likely to go to. Continued page 2 ASB Theatre manager Andrew Scott and Lisa Erikson, event marketing and ticketing, warn theatre goers to only buy tickets from their official site.

Scammers on-sell tickets at big cost Continued from page 1 “We first became aware of the scam when we got a phone call from a person in the Marlborough Sounds asking why we were charging such exorbitant prices for the Russian Ballet,” ASB Theatre event manager Katharine Overend says. “Tickets that originally cost $108 were being sold on the site for $280.” The scam site, called Viagogo, is believed to be based in Czechoslovakia, although theatre staff can’t be entirely sure where it is. The site has been expertly set up and includes all the details normally found on the legitimate site. “If people searching for tickets type

in the name of the show, say Foster & Allen for example, they’ll get Viagogo at the top of their search,” Katharine says. “Viagogo have tickets for this show, which normally cost $78, for sale for $116. And if you buy them they add on booking fees and any other costs.” “The only way to avoid being ripped off is to go to the official ASB Theatre Marlborough site,” theatre manager Andrew Scott says. “We can’t stop these people as they’re not based here. Consumer Affairs and the Police have been informed, but there’s nothing they can do. “Educating the public is the only

way we can stop this happening.” The scammers will buy a few legitimate tickets online. The tickets are sent as a PDF file with a bar code, which the scammers can then on-sell as many times as they can. “They buy a few tickets here, a few tickets there, giving false names and addresses. “We only find out when we scan the barcode at the theatre,” Katharine says, “and we find the same ticket has been sold several times. “Over the past months we’ve had numerous calls from people asking about high ticket prices, which has alerted us to this scam. “One person paid $300 for a ticket

that should have cost only $130.” The scammers also use a sense of urgency to encourage buyers to make a quick purchase. Their site features messages in red saying things like: “Tickets selling out fast!” “Only a few tickets left!” “Don’t miss out!” “Prices rising!” “It prompts a fear of missing out and people are being encouraged to make hasty decisions,” Katharine says. “By saying things like ‘prices rising’ the scammers encourage a bidding war.” “Don’t be scammed,” Andrew says. “The only safe place to buy tickets is from ASB Theatre Marlborough Ticketek.”

Closures before road opening By Cathie Bell Big detours are in place, adding hours to travel south, as officials try to get State Highway One open by December 15. The New Zealand Transport Agency announced a closure of State Highway One before Ward, diverting people off the highway onto Ward Beach Road and then Seddon Street, so that the Flaxbourne and Needles bridges can be fixed. It also announced the closure of a section of State Highway 65, the Shenandoah Highway, overnight this weekend to repair the Williscroft Bridge over the Maruia River. The highway is a key part of the new Alternate Route between Picton and Christchurch and the detour via Inangahua and Reefton will add 40 minutes to the journey, Transport Agency journey manager Tresca Forrester says. The work will take place from 8pm Sunday night, 12 November, through to 6am Monday morning, 13 November. If it rains, it will need to be postponed until the next dry night opportunity. Last week, the agency confirmed

plans to open State Highway 1 between Ward and Kaikoura to traffic on Friday 15 December, restoring the coastal highway link from Picton to Christchurch. Agency earthquake recovery manager Tim Crow says when the road reopens several sites will still be under construction, with unsealed surfaces, lane closures and stop/go traffic controls. The route will be closed at night in places for several months as a safety precaution, and planned closures will also be needed at times to carry out high-impact work. It is expected to take a minimum of five and a half hours to get from Picton to Christchurch on State Highway 1 and the alternate route is expected to take a minimum of six and a half hours. Work will continue in 2018 to bring State Highway 1 back to its preearthquake condition and complete improvement on the 60km section of State Highway 1 between Clarence and Oaro. Improvements will also continue to be delivered on the alternate route. Work continues on a seawall for State Highway One at Paparoa South.

Search continues West Coast Police continue to search for missing man Colin Ross after his vehicle was located last week. Colin was last seen in Blenheim two weeks ago and police have significant concerns for his welfare, encouraging anyone who may have seen Colin or his vehicle, a maroon coloured 1996 Toyota Rav 4 registration AJY133, to contact them immediately. If you know where he is or have information that may help, please contact Blenheim Police on 03 578 5279.

Weather station on the way

Catholic priest Father John Pearce speaks during the farewell reunion of St Joseph’s School in Picton.

Picton is a step away from getting its own weather station, subject only to confirmation that a television channel would include the town on its weather maps. The Picton and Marlborough Sounds Tourism Group asked council to pay for the proposal as part of the annual plan. Council agreed to pay $25,000 to install the weather station and $5500 a year to maintain it if the Tourism Group can get a TV channel to run the data.

Picton reunion pulls them in By Cathie Bell More than 200 people attended a reunion to mark the end of Catholic education at St Joseph’s School in Picton last Saturday. The occasion also marked the 100th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Catholic church building in Otago Street in Picton as well.

Parish priest Father John Pearce says the event was a huge success, with more than 200 people attending. People came from as far afield as Wellington and Nelson, he says, and there was a strong bi-cultural element. The event started with a ceremony at the school, which has

now closed, and then moved to the Endeavour Park Pavilion for a meal and time for people to catch up with each other. St Joseph’s School board of trustees chairwoman Lisa Bhandal spoke, as did community representative ‘Uncle’ Barney Thomas. The school closed last month with only two pupils, after 153

years. St Joseph’s Church still has Mass heard each week, but it is now part of the Star of the Sea Catholic parish, which runs from Picton across to Havelock and down to Kaikoura, including the Seddon, Ward, and Kaikoura communities, as well as Blenheim’s St Mary’s Church.

Mobile defibrillator loan A portable automated external defibrillator is available for groups, organisations or event organisers who want to have an AED on-site for a short period of time in Marlborough during events that won’t have a St John presence. Christmas Child appeal huge pile Erin, Liam, and Hamish Gleeson, and their friend stand with a stack of Christmas boxes in St Mary’s Church in Blenheim. Each year, Operation Christmas Child Appeal asks people to fill a shoe-box with presents for children in the Pacific Islands. There was a total of 296 boxes received from various churches,

schools and individuals, Star of the Sea Parish administrator Ginetta Petersen says. “A couple of churches blessed the boxes before they went to Christchurch on Sunday,” she says. Ginetta has agreed to coordinate the Marlborough area effort of Operation Christmas Child next year.

Rekindling wins Cup Irish horse Rekindling, owned by millionaire Australian Lloyd Williams, dashed ahead to win the $6.6 million Melbourne Cup at Flemington yesterday. Johannes Vermeer had stormed into the lead, but was run down by Rekindling in the final 300 metres. Max Dynamite finished third.

By Celeste Alexander Out of 10 of the top carpentry apprentices in the country, Seddon woman Olivia Ward was one of the finalists and the only female. Olivia, 22, competed at the Registered Master Builders Carters 2017 Apprentice of the Year competition last week. While she didn’t place in the top three, she says the experience was worth every minute. “It was such an amazing experience and I think being the only woman there was an achievement alone. “I took the opportunity to promote young

women entering into the trades and am extremely proud of being a national finalist,” she says. Each competitor took to their tools for a six-hour practical challenge where they were tasked with building ‘puppy palaces’. Olivia says no-one completed the build on time, and the finished products were donated to the SPCA. The winners were then announced at an awards dinner last Friday night. Vincent Hubbard of Hamilton was named the country’s top carpentry apprentice for 2017.

By Cathie Bell There is a lot of potential for business links between Marlborough and China, new Christchurch-based Chinese consul-general Wang Zhijian says. He was in Blenheim yesterday to visit the Marlborough District Council, Destination Marlborough, the Marlborough Research Centre, and some businesses as part of a familiarisation visit. Zhijian arrived in New Zealand just over a month ago, and he covers the whole South Island. Marlborough is a very nice place, he says.

“I think the potential is great for us to help move future co-operation.” Marlborough has already got a very good start with its sister-region agreement with the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, he says, and the consulate would work hard in joint efforts to achieve more. “Both government officials and the enterprises and entrepreneurs have a good faith in the Chinese market and are working very hard to find opportunities in China. “The consulate will do the utmost to help Chinese cities and South Island cities.”

An active life stolen away by cruel disease By Bill McElhinney Cheryl West’s eyes suddenly fill with tears. “I’m sorry,” she says, reaching for a tissue, “But it’s still very raw.” Cheryl is talking about her husband Bruce, who died eight weeks ago, aged 66, five years after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. “The diagnosis was a huge shock,” Cheryl says, “because you know it’s terminal. You just don’t know how much time you’ve got.” Bruce, a plant and food technician at the Marlborough Research Centre, was an active, hands-on person, Cheryl says. “He was an instructor at the Outward Bound School at Anakiwa for more than 12 years. “He also did maintenance work on the boats, vehicles and buildings.” The disease initially affected Bruce’s arms and hands. “It started with muscle spasms in his upper arms,” Cheryl says. “We saw a specialist at Wairau Hospital who picked it was motor neurone disease and sent Bruce to Nelson for tests, which confirmed it.” The disease causes the death of nerve cells (neurones) that control the muscles that allow us to move, speak, swallow and breathe. With no nerves to activate them, the muscles gradually weaken and waste away. This causes progressive loss of mobility in the limbs, difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. “It is a very cruel disease, especially for someone as active as Bruce,” Cheryl says. “He managed to carry on working for two years after being diagnosed, but then had to retire. “But his work colleagues

Bruce and Cheryl West were married for 36 years before Bruce died from Motor Neurone Disease.

were so supportive, and used to pick him up and take him to the Grovetown Hotel on a Friday night for their weekly social time, which he really enjoyed. “He was a people person and loved the company.” Cher yl continued her work as a careers advisor at Marlborough Girls’ College and nursed Bruce at home, but as his muscles wasted away and Bruce had to be fed and toileted, caring became more difficult. “I couldn’t lift him in the end,” Cheryl says. “Sometimes he would need to get up five or six times in the night and I just couldn’t manage.” Bruce moved into a NZ Care home. “There was lots of specialist care, and the staff were marvellous,” Cheryl says. Watching someone you love waste away is particularly hard, Cheryl says. “We were married for 36 years and we are a close

family. It was tough on our children, Owen, Nicky and Sally, but we had tremendous support from partners, colleagues and friends. “It has been a humbling experience, as we have had to let other people into our life.” Cheryl is now hoping the public will support the inaugural Walk 2 D’Feet MND in Blenheim on Sunday, an event to raise money for research into the disease. The walk, which is suitable for all ages, starts at the Henry Street footbridge at 10am and loops alongside the Taylor River, finishing at the starting point. Registration is from 9am, $15 for individuals, $25 for a family. There will also be a coffee cart, sausage sizzler raffles and auction items. “This disease can affect anyone at any time,” Cheryl says, “so please come and help us to raise awareness and funding for this very worthwhile cause.”

Stop whinging Road safety Bill English Dear Ed, Defeated PM Bill English whinges about the new government’s cabinet and claims added cost to the taxpayer? Did he show the same concern when his government foisted a $35 million flag referendum onto the taxpayer, an exercise that was pointless and shown by the public vote to be a waste of time and much money? Blinky Bert Blenheim

Spring Creek roundabout Dear Ed, While I’m no fan of Frank Porter, nor have any associateship to him, I feel I have to rise to his defence re Percy Parker’s letter of the 25th re the merits of the Spring Creek roundabout. As a past traffic signal engineer originally from the UK I have to support the roundabout, though I had hoped it would be a more straight through affair, but I can now see the need as to its final shape and size. Firstly, as it is not just there to slow the traffic so Percy’s 50kph limit doesn’t hold up. In fact, believe it or not, slower speeds can actually lead to more accidents. And secondly, it needs to prevent crossing traffic and hence filter opposing traffic to the main highway. In that it works. As to an exceptional long load then there is no reason why a driver of such a rig might have to mount the centre, which is not uncommon, so no punishment is necessary. It would be interesting to hear from Marlborough Roads as to the largest axis allocated? Just one point though, why are they planting anything but small ground shrubs, as visibilty will be lost to through traffic which is dangerous! Chris Davies Picton

Dear Ed Front page photo of children from Bohally intermediate seem to be putting themselves at risk by riding their bikes across an uncontrolled crossing I was always under the impression that you were supposed to dismount your bike and walk across a crossing waiting at the safety island until the other lane was clear or a vehicle stopped to allow you to cross safely I’m sure that the road layout at the crossing is more than sufficient to allow children to wait on foot behind the bars where motorists can see them and stop to allow them to cross safely Perhaps a little extra teaching of the road rules may not go amiss for their own safety Your thoughts? Dave Fowler Picton

Parking direction Dear Ed, Further to Nigel Perry’s comment re ‘Wrong Way Parkers’ in last Fridays’ edition. In Picton we have seen this for many years. On average we get 1-2 a month, normally overseas visitor, from the UK or Ireland, who have purchased a car/van, where it is legal there. If I see them I usually inform them or if they are away from the vehicle I leave them a note. Of course, if the parking meter inspector sees them a $40 ticket is issued. Interestingly enough I have never seen a traffic patrolmen give a ticket. I’ve even seen trucks in Auckland St, Picton, park up over-night in the wrong direction, though not lately. I did write to the past mayor with the suggestion why doesn’t Marlborough have a friendly warning note they could leave on an offenders vehicle, but he said it wasn’t up to the council as they had on-sold parking infringments, which, I think, is a bit of a cop-out. To me it seems a great bit of PR for us and could possibly be a first. Chris Davies Picton

Nigel Johnson and Paul Sangster inspect a pre-1800s muzzle loading flintlock rifle from the collection of a Blenheim member of the Nelson-Marlborough Antique and Historical Arms Association.

Antique firearms and historical items on show By Bill McElhinney An amazing collection of antique and historical arms and other wartime memorabilia will be on display at the Clubs of Marlborough at the weekend. The Nelson Marlborough Antique And Historical Arms Association is holding a show featuring New Zealand military history from the past to present, as well as collections of antique firearms, militaria and the Marlborough RSA military collection. “We aim to bring military history to life with these shows,” association secretary Nigel Johnson says. “Personal collections from members, some of who are from Blenheim, will be on display, alongside exhibits from the New Zealand Army, rifle clubs, target shooting clubs, and the black powder club. “It is an opportunity to present firearms in a more positive light than they usually get in the media,” Nigel says. “You can connect with history very much with a firearm. “It’s the progression of technology through the ages as well. “A lot of technology is firearms driven. Stainless steel is the result of firearms experimentation. “The association is dedicated to the discovery, collection

and preservation of arms of all descriptions with a view to contributing to the pool of knowledge and to the balance of understanding of their place in society at all periods of history,” Nigel says. “Many collections don’t include firearms or weapons of any kind,” Nigel says, “but feature things as uniforms, medals, badges, powder flasks, ammunition and historical documents. “A high standard of conduct is expected of all our members, and all their firearms but be properly licensed and stored. “The association enjoys good standing with government and police, and membership has come to be seen as a helpful prerequisite to obtaining firearms licence endorsements.” Contemporary gunsmiths will also be there to offer advice on firearms and hunting weapons, and there will be some trade tables selling militaria items. Originally formed in Christchurch in 1959 by a small group of enthusiasts, the organisation, has grown over the years to a membership of around 1000, spread amongst 12 branches throughout New Zealand. The show is will be open from 10am Saturday and Sunday, entry with a gold coin donation.

IT’S WACKY WEDNESDAY Catching up in the sunshine race By Cathie Bell October was warm, with above average sunshine hours, below average rainfall, and well below average wind-run, and that has enabled Blenheim to get within spitting distance of its nearest rival for the title of New Zealand’s sunniest town. Plant and Food Research scientist Rob Agnew collects weather data from a station at the Grovetown business park and he says the mean temperature of 13.9°C last month was 0.8 degrees celsius above the long-term average temperature for October of 13.1 degrees celsisus. No ground or air frosts were recorded in Blenheim last month, and Rob says this is the first year since 1998 when a ground frost has not been recorded in Blenheim during October. Usually, there are two. Blenheim had 247.4 hours sunshine last month, Rob says, which is 109 per cent of the long-term average for October, and total sunshine for January to October 2017 was 2038.9 hours, 103 per cent of the long-term average of 1976.2 hours. The sunniest place in New Zealand during

October 2017 was Tekapo, which recorded 261.2 hours sunshine, 13.7 hours ahead of second place-getter Richmond with 247.5 hours, Rob says. At the end of September 2017, Whakatane had the highest sunshine total for the first nine months of 2017, but Richmond and Blenheim recorded 34.2 and 34.1 hours more sunshine respectively than Whakatane during October, he says. “This has pushed Whakatane down into third place for the year to date. Blenheim is sitting in second place 7.1 hours behind Richmond, so these top three towns are all in the race for sunniest town in New Zealand for 2017.” Current sunshine totals and rankings to the end of October 2017 are: Richmond 2046.0 hours (7.1 hours ahead of Blenheim) Blenheim 2038.9 hours Whakatane 2028.3 hours Napier 1978.1 hours Tekapo 1944.6 hours Appleby 1919.2 hours Nelson 1812.7 hours

Pride and experience at Sun By Les Whiteside Before writing this story on The Sun’s 15 years, I decided to look back on The Sun’s 10th Birthday feature. It was pleasing to read the stories and comments from readers and advertisers alike. Katrina and I take great pride in our papers and while our style works so well, we are always looking for improvements and suggestions. For any business to be successful you need good staff which we have been fortunate to have, Les and Katrina say. This includes our long serving office manager Jill Sutherland-Kennard, who continues to be an incredible support for us all, after 13 years on our team. A special mention and

Katrina and Les Whiteside, owners of The Sun newspaper.

Sun gets stronger The biggest change in the last five years for most businesses has been the impact of the internet. The Sun has been fortunate or perhaps better managed because unlike daily newspapers who are struggling The Sun has continued to grow. You will see the demise of provincial daily newspapers, whereas community papers like The Sun, in general, are still strong. In my opinion, says Les, the internet is just another media platform, like television, radio and direct mail (flyers). Interesting on the topic of direct mail, national advertisers have in-

thank you goes to you Jill. We also acknowledge the sad loss we felt earlier this year losing Jill Fraser, our most faithful sales member of all time. Jill had been with us for 11 years and her friendship is still missed in our office, not to mention her great sales ability. We value all our staff and are pleased to have increased the number over recent times, offering jobs to our local community. Our staff are: Jill Sutherland-Kennard (Manager); Simon Byr ne (Sales Manager); Bonnie Gardiner and Gemma Bartlett (Sales); Bill McElhinney, Cathie Bell and Celeste Alexander (Editorial); Anne Thompson and Matt Brown (Production); Susan Chapman (Reception) and Peter Orr our deliverer.

creased print flyers - you only have to look in your letterbox to see how much of this ‘mail’ we get. The Sun newspaper has become stronger, publishing more local people stories, stories that you can’t find on the internet, and that is the major reason Marlburians read us. We have published more Letters to the Editor and ‘Text Talks’ this year than any year previous. Importantly also, our advertising continues to increase. So in celebrating our fifteen years, we are safe in the knowledge The Sun will continue to thrive and publish for many years to come.

It’s a tribute to the Sun and its staff that, after 15 years, this community newspaper is sticking to its grassroots role and consistently delivering news and views about what’s happening on the ground around our region. The community paper is a place to find out about the day to day matters that affect our daily lives in Marlborough; local events and success stories, celebrations, changes and challenges – all the goings-on that make for ‘community conversation’. We all understand we won’t get local news from the national papers, TV doesn’t deal with the small stuff and social media is weighed down with opinions, some of them malicious and

misguided. A good community newspaper is read widely and at Council we know from public feedback that people read their copies of the Sun. So the Sun helps us to be a connected community. It’s a commendable record in today’s uncertain media world and one I am sure the community values. John Leggett Mayor of Marlborough

Readers have their say Dean Buckley I like that it’s got a lot of local articles with it. You ca n pick it up, read it quickly, it’s an easy read and a really interesting read.

Melynda Bently Yes I read The Sun. It’s great to have a newspaper that’s so community focused.

Leonard Scott It’s my weekly ritual. I get The Sun and a cup of coffee and se e wha t’s be en happening around Marlborough.

Shannon Taylor Love The Sun. It ’s m y m a i n source of information about what’s happening around the town.

The future of news is community The future for newspapers such as The Blenheim Sun is looking bright. New communications channels using digital social media are springing up, but traditional channels such as community newspapers like ours are still important and profitable as they provide an accurate, fact-checked, and balanced view of the communities we all live in. Global investor Warren Buffett, known as the ‘Sage of Omaha’, says that no-one stops reading a story partway through when it’s about them or their neighbour. Warren Buffett acquired most of his newspapers (he currently owns about 31 of them) by buying a company called Media General in 2012 for US$142 million, and made bullish comments

about local papers and the role they play in small towns. “Newspapers continue to reign supreme in the delivery of local news,” he said at the time, in comments that many newspaper owners and editors celebrated. “If you want to know what’s going on in your town - whether the news is about the mayor or taxes or high school football - there is no substitute for a local newspaper that is doing its job.” It’s that recipe that The Blenheim Sun works by – news about our community for our community. It used to be called refrigerator journalism, those stories that parents and rellies cut out and stuck on the fridge. It still works.

Proud to be associated with The Sun Great people

How time flies!

We had been in business five years ourselves, so when Les and Katrina came calling on us, it was refreshing to have new people coming into business in the district. We had a connection because both Les and Kay came from Leeston. We got on so well, they are so open and friendly. The advertising they offered us so suits our business. We are friends as much as business partners. Kay and Lindsay Thomason Lynfords Furniture

On the 15th November, 2002, Cresswells Shoes became The Blenheim Sun’s first front page advertiser in the first issue of Blenheim’s first mid-week local paper. Now, 15 years later, Cresswell’s Shoes is 70 and still adverising every week in The Blenheim Sun. There has to be a reason for this. It could be the Blenheim Sun’s service, their attention to detail, their product quality and effectiveness. Maybe it’s their owners, their staff, the willingness to help and the friendly smiles galore. Actually, in reality, it is all of these and more. Congratulations “Blenheim Sun”! Cresswell’s Shoes is very pleased to stay with you, as “Two LOCALS working together” . Best Wishes Keith & Jacquelene Sandford Cresswell’s

Keeping it local

Good community

Working with The Sun team has been ‘a pleasurable association’, Basis owner Anthony van de Water says. He was one of the first advertisers in the paper, with an advertisement in the very first issue 15 years ago. “We like the community feel of the paper... It fills a space that was missing, with that community content.” Anthony is also impressed with how the paper went online early on, in a way that means his rural customers not only see the paper, but see his advertisements as well. By Bill McElhinney A little Aussie invader has made its way to Picton, and the authorities would like to see it gone. “Thanks to a sharp-eyed resident, a plague skink (also known as rainbow skink) was captured in Waikawa near Picton in early last month,” Marlborough District Council biosecurity coordinator Jono Underwood says “A second skink was caught at the same location during an investigation by the council, the Ministry for Primary Industries and the Department of Conservation.” Plague skinks are native to Australia but have established and spread rapidly throughout the warmer parts of the North Island. They breed prolifically and are thought to out-compete native lizards for food and territory.

“Plague skinks are a classic hitchhiker - they love to lay their eggs in pot plants, building materials and outdoor landscaping goods,” Jono says. “It is important that anyone moving materials from north to south checks for signs of plague skinks or other invasive pests such as the Argentine ant.” “We’re now working to determine whether the captured plague skinks are escaped hitchhikers or a sign of a more established population.” The small lizard measures 3 to 4 cm from nose to hind legs, excluding the long thin tail. The skinks are brown or grey-brown with a dark brown stripe down each side. Although adults are smaller than native skinks, they are easily distinguished by the single large scale on top of their head, compared to native skinks which have two smaller scales.

Quench Restaurant and Wine Bar There are some really exciting things happening at Quench Restaurant and Wine Bar including a new menu that provides an affordable, upscale experience to be enjoyed in a relaxed setting. Nestled within Chateau Marlborough’s 5-star luxury accommodation, the restaurant has three delectable menus to choose from including breakfast, light meals and the newly launched A-La-Carte dinner menu. Carefully designed dishes including some of the region’s top quality ingredients have been created with an elegant simplicity and plenty of flavour. Canterbury Lamb: Canterbury lamb is a natural fulfilment of a promise, that begins with New Zealand’s dew-covered pastures and ends with consistently delicious lamb and a reliable and honest eating experience. Wakanui Grass-fed and Grain-finished Beef : After grazing free range on lush, green pastures for 18 months, only the best cattle are hand selected to be grain finished for up to 75 days. Aged for a minimum of 21 days, Wakanui’s unparallelled flavour, distinctive marbling and fine texture will delight your palate. Ora King Salmon: Ora King Salmon from the pristine waters of Marlborough Sounds has an elegant balance of sweet

and umami flavours. Salmon’s texture is buttery and soft due to its unique muscular structure. It cuts well, is light in the mouth and coats the palate appealingly, making it a pleasure to eat. Each dish can be perfectly matched with one of the bar’s local or imported wines, beer or for something a little different, one of Quench’s popular cocktails. If it’s not a full meal you are looking for, the restaurant’s ‘Barrel Room’ situated off to the side of the bar has a selection of light meals available. This room was created as part of the hotel’s rebranding project last year which saw modernising decor, a new layout and additional seating areas built. General manager Lynley McKinnon says the restaurant now boasts of relaxed seating both indoors and out. “The new outside dining area is superb and a real hit when we have our pool side jazz evenings. Overall we have had wonderful feedback from the renovation and we welcome anyone who hasn’t visited us yet, to come and try it for themselves.” Aside from meals, Quench offers live music and drink specials on Thursday evenings, jazz entertainment on Friday evenings and $10 cocktails on Saturdays from 6-8pm.

Kids learn bike skills at Athletic Park By Bill McElhinney Dozens of youngsters bring their bikes to Athletic Park, Blenheim, on Thursday evenings to learn cycling skills. Lance Spencer, the Cycling New Zealand under-19 and 17 national team road coach, runs a programme for kids aged from three to 13 called Trailblazers. “It’s teaching kids to ride and have fun on their bikes. Two weeks ago was our muster day and we had 54 kids turn up. More started last week,” Lance says. “The programme aims to allow youngsters to progress at their own pace and become skilled and confident bike riders.” Lance says. Red Devils cycling club juniors help run Trailblazers. The youngsters are grouped into three levels. Level one focuses on balance, cornering, brakes, gears and correct helmet fit. At level two the youngsters are taught balance at speed, cornering at speed and introduced to selecting race lines. Level three focuses on riding at speed, racing tactics and one hour of solid riding.

Pigeon race results Blenheim clubs racing pigeons were released from Mosgiel on Saturday a distance of just under 600 km for the birds to travel and along with competing pigeons from North Island clubs the flock made good return times in the strong nor-west conditions and birds made their home lofts in quick succession. First in the race was the Two Fishers loft in Dillon’s Point with a speed of 69 km/hr, second to Alister Cooper at Renwick on 68 km/hr and third place to Ian McColm also Renwick with 54 km/hr.

Kaikoura Warrior Sport Tasman’s race director Kim Boyce-Campbell says the fourth annual helter skelter around the South Bay course is on this Sunday November 19. As usual, there will be three courses to choose from, all based around the picturesque racecourse area. For the kids, there is the 1.5km Mini Warrior, while the 3km Apprentice Warrior is for people with average fitness. The 6km Ultimate Warrior – which involves a shingle run along South Bay and a muddy slog up a creek bed – is for those wanting more of a hard core challenge.

“It’s all on the grass, so if they fall off they won’t hurt themselves. And riding on the grass tires them out, too,” Lance says. “We can help kids get off their

training wheels and start riding with confidence. It doesn’t take long.” . The youngsters pay $30 each term or $50 for two terms. Trail-

blazers is held at the park each Thursday from 4 to 5pm. “The money goes back into cycling, supporting the young Red Devils cycling club,” Lance says.
