period. Operator Kirsty Parry says the Marlborough Flyer

will focus on enhancing the visitor experience on cruise ship days. It will bring cruise ship passengers from Picton to Blenheim, then on to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, wineries, restaurants, and the Makana Chocolate factory in different tour options. Kirsty says that on selected Sundays every month, from December 2017 to March 2018, there will also be ‘Super Sunday Specials’, special days which

allow Marlburians and other Kiwis to enjoy The Marlborough Flyer experience with friends and family at a special discounted rate. “The discounted ‘Super Sunday’ rate has been made possible due to the support of the local sponsors and partners. “The aim is to make the experience as accessible as possible to locals, and in doing so create ‘My Marlborough Flyer’ brand ambassadors in the region.” Several businesses have

identified value in being associated with The Marlborough Flyer, Kirsty says. These are headline sponsor Port Marlborough and the carriage sponsors - Saint Clair Family Estate, The Ned of Marisco Vineyards, Lawson’s Dry Hills, Peter Ray Homes and Harcourts Marlborough. Orca refloated after military turnout By Cathie Bell An orca stranded on Marfells Beach in Marlborough since Sunday has been successfully refloated and was swimming out to sea. A pontoon was used to float the orca out to deeper water as the tide came in around 1.30pm on Monday. Once in deeper water, the orca was released and began swimming freely. Department of Conservation Sounds operations manager David Hayes says DOC was very grateful for the considerable help given with rescuing the whale. “We’ve had fantastic help with the orca from a large number of people, and we give a big thank you to them. “Project Jonah marine mammal medics have helped in caring for the orca and Orca Research Trust and Whale Rescue members flew into Blenheim to assist with the refloat. “We’ve had 25 defence force personnel from New Zealand, the USA, Canada and Australia who’ve been a big help.

“We’ve also had other people come along to help over the two days the orca was stranded on the beach.” The military staff, in Marlborough for Exercise Southern Katipo, were keen to help, Dave says. They dug a trench, about 1 metre deep and about 20 metres long, to create a channel of deeper water in which to refloat the whale, he says, and also helped get the orca onto the pontoon and took part in refloating it. The stranded orca was reported to DOC staff shortly after 10.30am on Sunday. DOC staff, a Project Jonah medic and several volunteers attempted to refloat the orca in the high tide shortly after 1pm but were unsuccessful. DOC staff and Project Jonah medics stayed with the orca overnight and into this morning, keeping it cool and wet with buckets of seawater until it could be refloated close to high tide on Monday Military staff in Exercise Katipo help refloat an orca stranded on Marfells Beach. afternoon.

Big shake remembered

By Cathie Bell Viv Young laughs when you mention that photo – taken a year ago, where she and husband Chris are making their way over deep cracks in State Highway One, leaving their car behind. Blenheim-based photographer Anthony Phelps, covering the magnitude 7.8 Kaikoura earthquake on November 14 last year, captured the photo of the couple for the international news agency Reuters. That photograph, the first to have people in the shot and showing the scale of the devastating earthquake’s effects, went all around the world. In return, Anthony rang Viv’s workplace, Crafar Crouch in Picton, to let them know she was safe and would get into work when she could. “Oh, that photo,” Viv says. “It went everywhere… Our neighbour was in Ireland and said ‘that’s my neighbours!’ Friends with a sister in Spain and the United States, all saw it.” Chris Young had been visiting his mother in Invercargill and bought a motorhome in Clyde. Viv had joined him in Queenstown to bring it back. “We’d stopped for tea in Cheviot

and I felt tired, so I said to my husband, ‘why don’t we park up somewhere for the night? I’ll get up early the next morning and hoof it to Picton for work.’ “We stopped at the parking area at the Kekerengu Store. Bad move.

she says. “The worse thing was having no phone contact. Knowing that people would be worrying about us and we couldn’t contact them.” Workmate Julia ‘Floss’ Thomson says it was ‘a hard day’. She knew Viv and Chris were driving back and they often drove at night, and the not knowing was really hard. “I’m not liking this, I saw all the slips on the news, and I’m really not liking this. I’m getting calls from her family and friends. “It was a long time before we got the call, and then we got visuals as well. ‘See this photo online, your mum’s fine’.” Since then, Chris has made several journeys to Kaikoura as a heavy haul driver. In fact, he was in Kaikoura for the earthquake’s first anniversary, Viv says. Viv says it was ‘sheer fluke’ they met Anthony. “We couldn’t get any further than that. We were about to turn round, and then we saw a car coming, and got very excited.” She says she is still grateful to Anthony for making the call for them. “It was an experience, and not one I want to repeat.”

Viv Young, with the photo of husband Chris and herself, walking over the broken state highway south of Ward a year ago.

“Well, it wasn’t really bad, but it certainly gave us an experience.” Viv says it’s hard to describe the scariness of the earthquake that night. The car parked next to the motorhome moved at least a metre,

The Education Ministry is still ‘continuing to explore a number of options’ for the proposed co-location of Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ Colleges. Ministry head of education infrastructure services Kim Shannon says officials have had discussions with a number of land owners and interested parties. “At this stage we cannot comment further as these discussions are held ‘in confidence’ to protect our negotiating position, the privacy of other parties, and in some cases, the provisions of confidentiality agreements. “We will make a public statement as soon as we can.”

Mayor and prime minister mark earthquake By Cathie Bell Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she sends her thoughts and support to the people of Kaikoura, Marlborough, and Hurunui as they gather to mark the anniversary of last year’s earthquakes. Speaking from the East Asia Summit in the Philippines,

Jacinda says she wants people to know that this Government will be with them for the long haul. “We will continue to support the recovery – both through our commitment to completing the existing programme and by working closely with communities, organisations and sectors affected to ensure that anything

that’s not quite there yet can be addressed. Marlborough mayor John Leggett says there are still issues to deal with after the 7.8 earthquake on November 14 last year. There are people on the East Coast living in substandard accommodation and still issues with insurers and the Earthquake

Home-grown hardwood posts work well in local vineyards

Hothouse Tomatoes Loose/Truss

By Bill McElhinney Durable hardwood posts in Marlborough vineyards don’t have to be chemically treated, last longer, and break less easily. A report just released highlights the promising performance of the first hardwood posts used in Marlborough vineyards. Some 1400 posts were bought by six Wairau Valley vineyards between 2006 and 2009, with vineyard owners keen to try an alternative to copper-chrome-arsenic – treated pine posts. Now, more than a decade after the posts were installed, vineyard owners have given feedback on the posts after they were assessed for decay and general performance. “Our survey confirms that vineyard owners are generally impressed by the posts, thanks partly to their natural durability and acceptance under organic and sustainable wine-growing standards,” New Zealand Dryland Forests Initiative manager and report co-author Paul Millen says. “The levels of breakage are far lower – more than 10 times lower - than for treated pine posts,” Paul says. “Also, most posts are living up to the promise of being highly durable, with minimal decay after 11 years of use. “Mechanised harvesting and pruning operations in vineyards mean hundreds of thousands of the brittle, chemically-treated posts break and need to be replaced every year,” Paul says. “While some are recycled, broken posts are hazardous waste, with Marlborough District

Council’s landfill the only local safe option for disposal. “There are a huge number of broken posts stockpiled in vineyards, and a pyrolysis plant is currently being proposed at the landfill site to turn the posts into charcoal.” This issue was first highlighted in 2003, and led to Marlborough-based Vineyard Timbers Ltd exploring the potential to produce a home-grown, naturally durable hardwood post as an alternative to treated pine. This included testing various eucalypt species by sawing and selling posts from NZ grown trees and by planting trials in collaboration with Marlborough District Council and private landowners. The Marlborough Research Centre liked the concept. Research Centre chief executive Gerald Hope hosted meetings and workshops that brought together key wine industry people, farm foresters and researchers from University of Canterbury’s School of Forestry. “My personal preference for vineyard trellising has always been to use locally sourced durable hardwood. It is a natural, renewable product that supports growing quality grapes for our premium wines,” Gerald says. “The incoming Government has signalled strong support for the creation of new forests and for regional development. We hope to get the opportunity to talk to the new Minister of Forestry as soon as possible, and will lobby hard for the inclusion of naturally durable hardwood forests as part of any new planting initiative.”

Chelsea Marriner and her team of working dogs from Ultimate Canines thrilled the crowds with their tricks.

A&P Show draws big crowds By Celeste Alexander Marlborough’s A&P Show kicked off last Friday for a two-day fun filled event. Families flocked to enjoy the attractions and displays, including a very funny demonstration given by Ultimate Canines - Trick Dogs. Chelsea Marriner and her team of working dogs, which featured on NZ’s Got Talent in 2008 and 2012, thrilled the crowd with their unusual and clever tricks. The judging for the South Island Champion-

ships for Jerseys and the Holstein Friesian South Island Championships was held on Friday and the woodchopping competition was held on Saturday, drawing a good crowd. Everywhere you looked there were kids enjoying the rides and bouncy castles, people tucking into hot food and icecreams and trade sites were busy with people checking out the latest machinery and technology. It was a great two days enjoyed by all ages. More photos on page 18.

Yes, it’s better from a safety point of view. It was different when I was growing up.

Yes. I own a couple of dogs and I have to stay at home to look after them during Guy Fawkes.

Yes. Times have changed. Fireworks are much safer let off in controlled conditions.

Absolutely! Guy Fawkes is so hard on animals and people do get hurt by fireworks.

Yes, I definitely think fireworks should be let off in controlled displays. We would avoid a lot of unnecessary drama.

Newspapers and litter Dear Ed, I want to respond to Wednesday’s letter from The Litter Patrol. When I restarted my subscription to the Marlborough Express I asked Fairfax if the Mex could be placed in my mailbox like the Sun newspaper but Fairfax refused. The only way Fairfax is prepared to deliver the Mex is to throw it onto my driveway from a vehicle. Here’s a thought: If the driver is also delivering what about driver distraction while the driver is throwing the paper out of the window? I’d better not go there because I have never noticed whether the vehicle is actually moving when the paper is thrown out of the window! Anyway I pointed out that my driveway is shared and the newspaper might be damaged by other vehicles.

No problem say Fairfax; if the newspaper is damaged I don’t have to pay. Anyway I gave up arguing and accepted that if I want the Mex delivered the only way was to pick it off my driveway. The Midweek and Saturday Express are delivered the same way i.e. thrown from a vehicle. Two issues here: First, I have never asked for the Midweek and Saturday Express. So is it up to me to tell Fairfax that I don’t want them? Second, if I don’t pick them up from the driveway, do they become litter and if so who is responsible? Fairfax say it’s all to do with cost. But would the sums change if Fairfax were responsible for picking up their unwanted newspapers? Litter Helper Blenheim

More on colleges Dear Ed, There were three meetings to facilitate conversation about the colleges sites and what options there were and why. I attended the first two of those meetings. At the first public meeting in 2014 people suggested combining the Marlborough Girls College and Bohally Intermediate sites but it was made very clear to everyone there that

the Bohally site was not included in the options, it would be staying as it is. The turn-out to these meetings were pretty good but with all the passion about the subject people are showing now the hall should have been packed at the time. There was also an online submission process. Tracey Williams Redwoodtown

Petrol Prices Dear Ed No one has yet explained why Picton petrol prices are eight cents cheaper than Blenheim’s. Nor why Levin, Foxton, Bulls, etc... all non-port towns, and all have petrol prices 25 cents

cheaper than Blenheim. And I was told Auckland has prices about 40 cents cheaper. What happened to ‘Crusher’ Collins’ investigation? Not Fair Play Blenheim

No longer a country Dear Ed, I just read your article about the theatre and the high prices being charged by a third party seller. Please note Czechoslovakia does not exist and has not been a country since 1989 when the iron curtain fell.

Remember the wall coming down? Same time Czechoslovakia split into two countries. Czech Republic and Slovakia. Please show some respect and get your facts right. Tim Adams via email

Vanessa Wills Blenheim Yes. So many people and animals get hurt. You can go to a fireworks display and support a good cause.

Spring Creek Accountability Dear Ed, Some have written in saying get over the Spring Creek roundabout fiasco as it’s done and dusted. That’s myopic thinking. Fact is the roundabout was never needed. A 50 or even 40 km/hour speed restriction would have achieved a better result at virtually no cost. The cost - is it towards $6 million?— is out of the public purse. Wasted money. More taxes. When Marlborough Roads man Mr Porter tries to justify the roundabout, then he misses the point. Accountability should be applied. If it’s incompetence and a gross misuse of public money, heads should roll. Taxpaying Motorist Blenheim

Road Safety Dear Ed, Val Beveridge is right. The big truck should not have stopped for students at the pedestrian refuge and students needing to cross the street must be equipped with sleeping bags so as to be able to wait long enough comfortably until there is a gap in the never ending queue of traffic made up of cars with only one person in them. Even if most of those cars don’t really need to be on the road and even if it’s a group of a dozen children. So, these pedestrian refuges are completely useless and taxpayers and ratepayers should never have allowed them to be built. There are over 1000 children at Bohally and MGC but no real pedestrian crossing on Nelson Street and McLauchlan Street. Busy urban highways and streets need pedestrian crossings at an interval of about every 500 to 800 metres. There are very few in Blenheim but plenty of them in the area between the District Courts, MDC and RSA. Is it because we value cars, politicians, judges, lawyers and criminals more than our children? Fireworks set for Saturday By Celeste Alexander When it comes to fireworks displays, no one does it quite like Whitney Street School. The school is holding its annual major fundraiser this Saturday and promises a fun event that the whole family can enjoy. This year, funds raised will be going towards resources for innovative learning practices. Gates at the A&P Showgrounds open at 6pm with food and entertainment including a performance by Whitney Street School’s Kapa Haka group, a silent auction with an incredible line up of items, and a huge choice of side-line activities and stalls,

all preceding the headlining fireworks display. Crowd favourites the chocolate wheel, candy floss and bouncy castle will be back. A large range of food and drinks can be purchased from most hot food stalls, with free water on site. Tickets cost $8 for adults and children five-years and over. Children under five-years are free. A family of five (two adults, three children) cost $35. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or from Gill Construction. Eddie Low, Allan Barron on route for concert By Celeste Alexander Well-known singers Allan Barron and Eddie Low are flying into Blenheim this week to perform at a concert that is being held by the Blenheim Country Music Club. The concert will be held at the Clubs of Marlborough main hall this Saturday from 7.30pm. The concert is raising money for the Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards which is being held from January 19-21, 2018. The concert is more of a social, so people are encouraged to get up and dance and enjoy the

evening. There will be raffles on the night and the main bar will be open for drink sales. Not only will Allan and Eddie be performing, but locals Fiona Boniface and Andrew Fairhall will also be singing. They are members of the local band which also features on the night, including locals Geoff Robinson and Bruce Windleburn. Organisers are thrilled to be hosting Allan and Eddie once again, and say this is the second year they have come to Blenheim to perform at the fundraising concert.

“They are both fantastic performers, very charming and love to interact with the audience. They enjoy coming here and if last year’s concert is anything to go by, we can expect another successful and enjoyable night,” Carolyn Coles says. Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased by contacting Carolyn on 027 610 9393 or Kathy on 021 024 69233 or (03) 5779659. Tickets are limited and if not all sold before hand, may be available at the door. Get in early to avoid disappointment. Country music singers Allan Barron and Eddie Low will be guest performers at a PBA concert being held in Blenheim on Saturday.

By Cathie Bell Each year, the arrival of the godwits is eagerly awaited in Marlborough, but the birds are becoming more and more threatened by human expansion in China and Korea, an ornithologist who has studied the birds for the past 40 years says. David Melville will be speaking about godwits and other migratory birds that travel from their breeding grounds in the Arctic Circle through Asia to New Zealand each year to a meeting organised by Marlborough Forest & Bird at the Blenheim School Hall on Thursday at 7.30pm. He has been trying to get to Blenheim for about two years to deliver this presentation, but things – including storms and floods – have stopped him getting here. “Hopefully, this week’s weather has got that stuff out the way.” Godwits are a bird species people really notice, he says. “It’s them that originally took me up to the Yellow Sea area, and keep me going up there year

after year, but there are a whole lot of other species suffering to the same extent.” Since 2011, David has been working with students at a university in Shanghai studying birds and their food supply at a nature reserve on the China/ Korea border where 60 per cent of New Zealand’s godwits take a rest on the way to Siberia. Massive land reclamation projects in China and Korea have affected the birds’ environment and food supply, and that along with pollution is causing the birds to die in their travels. David is part of a team looking at birds on mudflats in North Korea, now in the third year of a five-year programme, and it seems those areas are important as a ‘safety valve’ in the birds’ fly way as there are big numbers of some species, but not of others. The team only has permission to survey the birds and can’t take food samples from the mudflats, which is limiting the amount of information they can gather.

Hatarei Peka, Ali Crossman, and Peter Rijhnen of St Marks with Alison Souness of the Redwood Market.

Cash boost for St Marks By Celeste Alexander St Marks Addiction Residential Treatment Centre in Blenheim has received a $500 cash boost from Redwood Market stall holders. The market runs every Saturday morning in Redwoodtown, supports charitable organisations throughout the year with donations made up from site fees and proceeds from a stall run by Alison Souness selling glass flowers and succulents. Alison met with St Marks Addiction Residential Treatment Centre manager Peter Rijhnen last week to present the

money. Peter says the money will go towards art supplies. “We are always so grateful for donations as while we do receive some funding, anything we do that’s extra we must find ourselves. “We are in the process of building a new multi-function room which will be used to give clients art therapy and other activities. “This money will be used to purchase some art supplies for the art therapy,” he says.

Commissioner Richard Fowler heard from the ministry and its contractors Christchurch Methodist Mission and Crossroads Charitable Trust and from neighbours opposing the application to turn the Brydan motel on Rose Street into emergency accommodation for homeless people in a hearing last Tuesday. Ministry representative Sarah Sinclair says the motel is not suitable for single men, and is being targeted for families, couples, or single women. Christchurch Methodist Mission director Jill Hawkey says it is working with 24 families in Blenheim, seven in Housing NZ units it leases, seven in one motel, and 10 others in other motels across Blenheim. Crossroads Charitable Trust co-ordinator Janette Walker says competition for housing in Marlborough is ‘extremely fierce’. “Sometimes there are only four houses on the private market and up to 70 applications for each one.” She says the motel will be ‘well-managed and well-maintained’. “We want to provide a good environment for everybody.” There are other places for single men to go for emergency housing, Janette says. Another motel in Blenheim has put caravans in so that if a single man who is thought to pose ‘a risk or isn’t socialised enough’ they can stay there. Sarah says the Government has bought seven houses in Blenheim so far and this proposal is part of a wider portfolio. Its assessment last year was that 50 new social houses are needed, and there are 78 people on the social housing register. A new assessment is due out shortly.

Slapped Cheek causes a bright red rash to appear on children's faces.

Slapped Cheek Healthline, Pharmacists, GP or GP Practice Nurse, and Urgent After Hours GP offer professional health advice. If you arrive at Wairau Hospital’s Emergency Department with a non-urgent health concern you may be referred to your GP.

You may have heard the words ‘Slapped Cheek’ mentioned by teachers, early childhood teachers or doctors recently... it’s a common childhood illness that most commonly affects children under the age of 10. It’s caused by the human parvovirus B19 (no connection to the animal parvovirus). It’s also called ‘Fifth Disease’ because it was the fifth childhood infection with rash-like symptoms after measles, German measles, scarlet fever and roseola. As per it’s name, Slapped Cheek causes bright red cheeks, like you’ve been slapped, and a lace-like rash on the body. It’s passed on in droplets from the respira-

tory tract of an infected person, mainly by close contact, coughing and sneezing. Once infected, the time until symptoms appear is between four and 20 days. If you catch Slapped Cheek, you’ll be infectious for five or six days before the first symptom appears, and once the rash appears you’ll stop being infectious. This is why Slapped cheek rapidly spreads through schools and childcare facilities and is most common during winter and spring. It’s important to note that it’s a mild disease and most children will have only mild symptoms.

Highly infectious but mild

Early symptoms may include: Low-grade fever, chills, headache, body ache, sore throat and diarrhoea. After three to seven days these symptoms improve and a rash develops. This starts with firm, bright red cheeks that are burning hot (‘slapped cheek’). A fine, red, lace-like rash then develops on the child’s body, arms and legs. The rash may be itchy and may seem to fade and then flare up when the child is hot or upset. The rash usually lasts for two weeks but may last up to six weeks. Adult symptoms: Adults with slapped cheek are less likely to have a rash but may suffer from painful, swollen joints, especially in the hands and feet. The joint pain may last for one to two weeks and in some more severe cases up to six weeks. If you are pregnant and catch slapped cheek during the first half of your pregnancy, there is a small risk that your baby can develop a serious form of anaemia (low iron levels in the blood), or that you may have a miscarriage. If you come into contact with a child with slapped cheek, contact your doctor or lead maternity carer. There is no specific treatment for slapped check, but to keep your child comfortable you can: • Let them have plenty of rest

Junior players defend Shield Young Marlborough tennis players successfully defended the Malcolm Shield for the sixth consecutive year in the annual 14 and under junior representative fixture held at the Forrest Winery tennis centre in Blenheim on Sunday. Marlborough completed a convincing 14-2 win after making a strong start, taking a 4-0 lead after the first doubles leg. The home team won all four doubles matches. Oscar Sandford-Jury and Oscar Parkinson narrowly beat Harry Pugh and Harrison Kross 6-1 6-7 10-6 in the number one doubles. Then Ruairi Meighan and Lachlan Mackie beat Sam Smith and Luke Innes-Walker 6-3 6-2 in the number two matchup. In the girls, Jade Otway and Lily Parkinson beat Rani McGuire and Ashley Walsh 6-0 6-4, then Kyla Otway and Ella Sowman were too strong for Tina Waine and Maia

Kininmonth, winning 6-2 6-1 to put the home team 4-0 up going into the singles. The Shield was secure after the singles as Marlborough took out six of the eight singles matches, to lead 10-2 going in the mixed doubles. In the mixed doubles, Marlborough again produced a flawless display to sweep all four matches and take the tie by a score of 14-2. Marlborough players to record perfect three wins out of three were Jade Otway, Kyla Otway, Lily Parkinson, Oscar Parkinson and Ruairi Meighan. The Otway twins have been a big part of this successful Shield tenure and this was the final appearance for the talented pair. It was Jade Otways sixth Malcolm Shield, having played in the event since the age of nine, with a record of 14 wins and four losses. It was Kyla’s fifth appearance, with a record of 12 and 3.

Picton club has it all By Bill McElhinney A combination of fun, fellowship and exercise has proved a winner for the Waikawa Picton table tennis group. Nancy and Darcy Woolford started the club earlier this year, and it has grown to become a popular Thursday morning event. “I was a keen table tennis player when I was young,” Nancy says. “As people get older their movement and reflexes slow down. “Table tennis is a non-contact sport which helps fitness, mobility and hand-eye coordination. “Because it is fun interacting with other players, it doesn’t feel like a physical workout, but the

benefits to those who take part are obvious,” she says. Nancy has suffered a series of strokes which left her paralysed down her left side. “But I gradually worked on my mobility,” she says, “and playing table tennis helped me make a full recovery!” Nancy and Darcy bought the first two tables and set them up in the Port Marlborough Pavilion at Endeavour Park in Picton. Grants from Sport Tasman have enabled them to buy four more tables, and the group hopes to get two more tables next year. “We started the club with just six people,” Nancy says.

“Now we have 42 people on the roll. “Some people just come for the social aspect, just to meet others and have a chat. “We even have people come from Blenheim and Havelock. “We provide the bats, you just have to wear non-slip footwear. “And we provide morning tea, home baking from some of our members. “You can have fun, fellowship and a feed!” Other clubs often close over the summer, but the Waikawa Picton club will stay open except for the week between Christmas and New Year.

“We are also going to encourage youngsters to come during the school holidays,” Nancy says. “We will have three tables for youngsters over 10 to come and have fun in a supervised environment. “We will charge $3 per person to cover our expenses.” The group is also considering travelling to Kaikoura next year to play with a club there. “This could be a reciprocal event,” Nancy says. “They could come and visit us; we could play and then share lunch. “We’re more than a table tennis club, we’re a community group.”

Marlborough mayor and Grey Power president Brian McNamara urge people to claim the rates rebate.

From left, Daemyn Ireland, Chase Powell and Dylan Huddleston raise awareness of diabetes at Renwick School.

People urged to apply for rates rebate

Getting the blues for a good cause

By Cathie Bell The number of people taking up their rates rebate has dropped, and Marlborough mayor John Leggett joined forces with Marlborough Grey Power president Brian McNamara this week to urge people to apply. The rates rebate is a Government programme to

provide a subsidy to low income home owners on the cost of their rates. The council administers the scheme and is reimbursed by the Government for all rates rebates. Brian says the scheme is there and people should take up the opportunity. “For some people, every bit helps and matters.”

John says it can be ‘a significant saving’. The rates rebate is ‘a good initiative’, he says, and he encourages people to come into the council’s offices and talk to staff. “We’ve got extra staff on, with expertise in the area, they can help you through the process.”

Pupils at Renwick School had the blues last Friday, but they weren’t feeling sad! Pupils Daemyn Ireland, Dylan Huddlestone, Chase Powell and Saphera Best organised a Blue Day at the school. These four youngsters live with type one diabetes, but refuse to allow it to hold them back. Type one diabetes is caused when the body attacks its own pancreas. The person diagnosed has done nothing to cause the diabetes.

People with type one diabetes must take insulin to ensure that they are able to process their food and get the energy from it. Fellow students were asked to show their support on the day by wearing blue and donating a coin towards the search for a cure for type one diabetes, and the Marlborough Diabetes Youth Camp. The coins were placed on a bee, which is part of the motto: Type One Diabetes Be Aware. November is Diabetes awareness month.
