Fabulous forty Market milestone

By Bill McElhinney It’s a Blenheim institution that’s been going for 40 years, and the Blenheim Lions Club Mistletoe Market will be back again on Saturday, December 2. “We started in 1977 with about 20 stalls down each side of Market Street,” long time market organiser Charles Riley says.

Continued on page 2 Blenheim Lions George Jensen and Charles Riley will be bringing the popular Mistletoe Market back on December 2.

Popular market stands test of time Continued from page 1 “The market opened at 9am and it was all over by lunchtime.” Since then the market, a Lions Club of Blenheim community project, has grown to become one of the most popular markets in the Top of the South area. It’s also Blenheim’s largest street market, held on the first Saturday in December and occupying a large part of the town centre. “We know it’s popular,” says George Jensen, the Lions Club member who organises the stallholders. “I started

off this year with a waiting list of 50 people wanting stall sites. “We’ll have at least 130 stalls this year,” George says. “There will be something for everyone - food, gifts, jewellery, clothes. It’s a great opportunity to pick up some wonderful Christmas gifts!” The market is widely supported by the Blenheim community with many stall holders having attended for a number of years. It’s a big day for the Lions Club members, some of who are out at 5.30am on the Saturday marking out

the stall sites. “We’re there for the rest of the day,” Charles says, “directing the stallholders and traffic, helping people, keeping an eye on safety.” Long-time Lions Club member Ron Moore, who was a professional surveyor, drew up the site plans for the market and was involved with event for 34 years. As the market grew, Ron drew up new sets of plans to ensure there was space for everyone while maintaining access to the shops in Market Street, Queen Street and High Street.

Over the years the market has raised about $160,000, which the Lions have distributed to a host of community groups and worthy causes. The market will start at 9am and go through until 2pm before stallholders pack up to make room for the Blenheim Christmas Parade which will start at 3.30pm. The parade starts with floats departing from Blenheim School, making their way around Alfred Street and Seymour Street, through Market street in the CBD, before returning to Blenheim school.

By Bill McElhinney Colourful quilts for quake-shaken kids – a group of caring women have been busy for months bringing comfort to East Coast residents. “We started last Decembers,” Carol Green from Awatere Quilters says. “We got together with the Marlborough Quilters to begin making quilts to give to families battered by the Seddon and Kaikoura earthquakes. “People don’t realise the impact these events had on people on the East Coast. Some of them are still in dispute with EQC and insurers about getting their homes fixed. “Some lived for months in sheds and caravans, some elderly resident are still shaken by the events and some children still won’t sleep on their own.” Up to 50 women in Marlborough joined forces to begin making colourful quilts to donate to families. “We started with the people in Clarence and Kekerengu, which was as far south as we could get, and have worked our way north to Ward, and now Seddon, which will be our final call.” The women have got together on a regular basis and have so far made and donated 400 quilts. “It’s great to see the children’s faces when they get the quilt,” says

Marlborough Quilters convenor Sharyn Simpson. “They wrap themselves up in them. It does bring them comfort, and the mums really appreciate it, too. “We get this sort of feedback from some of the kids: ‘The other day when I was at Preschool I got a special quilt made just for me and I LOVE it. I sleep with it every night. Thank you.’”

Sharyn says they are grateful for the assistance with materials they have had from Seddon Lions and other organisations, including fabrics donated by Motueka quilters. However, the quilters still buy much of the material themselves. “I always look out for sheet sales,” says Sharyn. “We use cotton sheeting for backing on the quilts so I’m always

on the lookout for king size sheets on sale.” A group of the quilters got together at Seddon on Saturday to continue their work. “It’s great to work together,” Carols says, “and it’s a nice social time as well. “We’re doing 130 quilts for the Seddon School and we’ve finished about 80.”

Daylight open only State Highway One between Ward and Kaikoura will only be open during daylight hours, from 7am until 8.30pm, when it re-opens next month, the NZ Transport Agency says. Agency earthquake recovery manager Tim Crow says the decision has been made with the safety of road users in mind. “We’re committed to re-opening the road in time for the holidays so that local residents and visitors can make their way up and down the coastal corridor. “When the road reopens several sites will still be under construction. There will be some unsealed surfaces, lane closures and stop/go traffic controls, so we will need to close the sections north and south of Kaikoura at night as a safety precaution.“

Fishing ban extended The Government is extending the emergency closure of some fisheries along the coast of Kaikoura to help the marine environment affected by last year’s earthquakes to recover. The closure applies to all shellfish and seaweed, excluding rock lobster (crayfish) and scampi. Ministery for Primary Industries acting director fisheries management Steve Halley says the earthquakes had a devastating effect on the coastline between Marfell’s Beach and the Conway River, raising the seabed by several metres in some areas. “For the immediate future, we need to give the coastal environment time and space to heal.”

Marlborough Violence Intervention Project Champions mingle with White Ribbon riders and supporters.

White Ribbon riders draw them in By Cathie Bell The White Ribbon ride passed through Blenheim last Friday, and organiser Colin Agnew says the talk to about 200 year nine students at Marlborough Boys’ College was ‘very successful’. “It went very well, it always does in Blenheim.” The White Ribbon riders’ campaign is against domestic violence, and Colin says the main message of the riders this year is the need to treat others with respect.

“Our main message that we’re delivering to these young men to be respectful, to treat people with respect, in particular their girlfriends. They need to know they need to treat these girls with respect, not only women their own age, but their sisters and mothers.” “You can’t be violent towards someone you really respect,” he says. “It seems to be getting in, they seem to be taking some notice.” Marlborough Violence Inter-

vention Project co-ordinator Liz Collyns says about 15 riders were here, some from the North Island, including one woman from North Cape. “There are women in the ride, but the men do the speaking, it’s really important that they give the message.” Liz says there were about 15 riders here, some from the North Island, including one woman from North Cape. Men talk to their daughters about

keeping themselves safe, she says, but they don’t tend to talk to their sons and mates about being respectful. “This time it’s about men talking to others about respectful relationships with women.” There were about 200 year nine boys at the meeting on Friday, Liz says, and they were ‘really attentive’. “The talking went on for quite a while.”

Renwick land purchase for new substation

Country singers Allan Barron and Eddie Low flew into Blenheim for a fundraising concert last Saturday evening which ended up being a ‘huge’ success, organisers say. The concert was held at the Clubs of Marlborough main hall, hosted by the

By Cathie Bell Marlborough Lines is to spend $3 million to build a new substation in Renwick, but when it’s operational, no-one will know it is there. The substation that supplies Renwick with electricity is on an active faultline, exposed after last year’s earthquake, and Marlborough Lines managing director Ken Forrest says the company is to build a new, larger one in Boyce Street. However, it will outwardly appear to be a residential house, he says, similar to one in Redwoodtown and Springlands. “A passerby will notice nothing different.” The new substation will have capacity of 16 MVA, up from the current substation’s 10 MVA, to cater for the growth in houses in Renwick. It will hopefully be operational by the later part of next year, Ken says. The substation is to go on a block of land in Boyce Street being subdivided, with the

other parts of the block going into housing. The subdivision is going ahead after the Marlborough District Council approved the surrender of two pieces of ‘isolation strips’ alongside the property earlier this month. The isolation strips were put in place in 1985 to control access to Boyce Street from the property when it was thought that Boyce Street may have become an arterial route from State Highway Six, a report to councillors says. “With the build-up of residential housing the area, this scenario is no longer the case. “The current owners of this land are seeking to develop this property but have some restrictions… due to this said isolation strip.” The council surrendered the land to the property owners at no cost, but with them paying all costs to process the request, which is the council’s legal and Land Information NZ costs. These are estimated at $3000.

Roger Harris and Ryan Southam with Roger’s One Design, specially built for aerobatic competitions.

Pilots test skills in skies over Omaka By Bill McElhinney The skies above Blenheim’s Omaka airfield will be buzzing today as pilots practise for the South Island Akro Fest, an aerobatics competition. Competition starts tomorrow and continues on Friday as the New Zealand Aerobatic Club runs the third edition of this South Island regional event, hosted by the Marlborough Aero Club and Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. “There are 15 pilots registered for this year’s event,” Andrew Love, vice president of the aerobatic club says. “There will be an array of aeroplanes ranging from a Tiger Moth to the Sukhoi Su-29, a Russian two-seat aerobatic aircraft with a 268 kW (360 hp) radial engine.” Another Blenheim-based aircraft competing is a Rihn DR 107 One Design, owned and flown by Roger Harris. “It was built off a set of plans,” Andrew says. “It’s an aircraft specially designed for aerobatic competitions. “The event is designed to encourage and inspire aviators of all ages to try aerobatic flight and to perhaps have a go at competition flying,” Andrew says, “and we’ve got a number of young fliers coming to compete for the first time.”

Andrew is based in North Canterbury but is a regular visitor to Omaka, and will be flying his Pitts Special “The competition will all be flown over the airfield at Omaka, Andrew says. “If you want to come out and have a look, head for the area near the aviation museum. Judges from around New Zealand watch from the ground as the pilots go through a series of manoeuvres which are judged on their difficulty. “It’s like judging gymnastics or ballroom dancing,” Andrew says. “It’s all down to the skill level of the pilot. Someone flying a Tiger Moth could still compete against someone in a much more modern plane.” Andrew says Omaka is a great location and the Omaka Aero Club members are great hosts. “And we get really good support from the control tower at Woodbourne. Competing can be nerve – wracking, Andrew says. “You’ve got to get your head in the right place. “But there’s the excitement and sheer thrill of carving your own signature in the sky in front of a panel of judges. You develop skills and confidence that will be valuable no matter which direction you ultimately pursue as a pilot.”

We grabbed the opportunity while it was there.” Russell says the proposed youth centre space needs to be centrally located in Blenheim and ‘a couple of stories high as we’re looking at a climbing wall’. Something with a bit of outdoor space would be a ‘bonus’, he says, and it needs to have ‘a big space inside that could be multipurpose, for indoor sport or area for a large crowd for a presentation, or school holiday programme.” Trustee Dean Buckley says the plan is to move into a centre already working, not about creating one from scratch. Council property and community facilities manager Jamie Lyall says the council has yet to make a decision about that building. “There have been discussions but nothing formal.”

Smith City building eyed by youth trust By Cathie Bell The Marlborough Youth Trust is eyeing up the Smith City building as a possible youth centre space. Trust chairman Russell Smith confirmed at the trust’s annual meeting recently that the trust had a place in mind for its proposed youth centre space and that was the Smith City building. The building on the corner of Kinross and Redwood Streets was bought by the Marlborough District Council three years ago. At the time, then-mayor Alistair Sowman said the council had regretted selling the land, next to Stadium 2000, in 2000 and when the opportunity came up to buy it back, it acted. Alistair said at the time that the land was part of the council’s long-term planning to enable expansion of the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. “This is obviously a strategic purchase, offering opportunity for the stadium facilities

Just a pair of shoes Spring Creek roundabout To all our sponsors, trade exhibitors, competitors, exhibitors, volunteers and show enthusiasts a big thank you for creating a wonderful spectacle and very successful 2017 Marlborough A & P Show.

Dear Ed, Recently I’ve had two pair of shoes that lasted a couple of years or so. Made by China and Vietnam. The toes and soles started lifting during the two years. I applied Shoo Glue and kept them going but both were tossed out after two years. So what? Just another pair of shoes. In contrast, two different pairs of NZ made shoes by Last Footwear Company in Christchurch and McKinlays in Dunedin have lasted not two years, but well over two decades (20 years) and

still going strong. Doesn’t this show what a sham free trade agreements are? Morally it’s wrong since the Chinese and Vietnamese shoes are produced with very low cost labour- arguably slave labour. Cheap imported goods lead to runaway consumerism and piles of rubbish at the end of it. Excessive imports cause trade deficits. I would rather have ‘well made NZ’. Barefoot in the Park Blenheim

Dear Ed, I can agree with Taxpaying Motorist about the Spring Creek roundabout (Sun, Nov 15th). The simple solution was not apparently on the minds of those who dreamed up this expensive solution to what was considered a safety hazard. But what makes me think this project is using up more money, are the continual workings going on. Two electronic signs (I think they are signs) have been installed, but no one has yet been able to tell me what they are for. And other ongoing tinkering around, here and there, on the curbing it seems. The cost must be mounting. And whoever is responsible for the placement of other signage, has obviously never planned these from

a car driver’s point of view. No doubt they drive around in a SUV, which is much higher than a car. Being lower, a car driver’s view of indicating vehicles, is hard to see bacause of the low signs. Add to this, the plantings that will grow, which will also interfere with a car driver’s view. These low signs are also a hazard in town, Alfred Street roundabout is a good example. In my car, heading towards Redwood Street, I can’t see what the oncoming driver is indicating, (if he is indicating) because a sign blocks my view. It seems to me, that the roading engineers are creating more hazards than they solve. But what the heck, it’s only public money. R Howe Marshland

Sunscreens recalled Two sunscreens have been withdrawn from sale following a Consumer New Zealand test that found the products failed to provide the protection claimed. The manufacturer of Snowberry Family+ Sunscreen SPF30 has recalled the product after a test found it had an SPF of only 20 and failed to meet requirements for broadspectrum protection. The maker of Pure Blend Sunscreen SPF15++, mar-

keted as a natural product, will also stop selling its sunscreen. Testing found the product had an SPF of just 4. Another natural product, Pure South 100% Natural Sunscreen, also provided low sun protection. While the product doesn’t claim an SPF rating, it lists the SPF range of raspberry oil, an ingredient in the cream, as 28 to 50. However, Consumer NZ’s test found the sunscreen had an SPF of 5.

Walking bike brings freedom fits in the back seat of a car. “It’s just what I need,” Betty says. “I will be able to get out and scoot along with Charlie without running out of puff.” Betty took her trike for a spin when she picked it up from Blenheim mobility specialists Access Mobility, and found it was easy to use. “It is designed to be so cool that it overcomes the uneasiness some people have towards disabilities,” Chris White-Johnson from Access Mobility says. “When you are using the Alinker you are the person with the cool bike! “It also allows for engagement at eye level, which is something people with mobility issues can struggle with.” The trike is also used by some people with multiple sclerosis as the exercise it provides can help combat fatigue, muscle stiffness and balance difficulties.

She suffered back problems 10 years ago and her health has steadily worsened to the extent that she can’t walk very far without becoming breathless. Invented by a Dutch designer called Barbara Alink for her own mother, the Alinker is a pretty unusual-looking yellow tricycle. the joy of 2nd hand

Secondhand shopping tip

Shop preloved and support charities If you like to make a difference in your community while finding some treasures, then preloved shopping is a great way to spend your money. Not only can you shop on a budget and get a lot for your money, but there are a number of other great benefits to

preloved shopping. Clothing and items are much more affordable: Make your money stretch further and save for other important expenditures. Thrill of the hunt: We all know that great feeling when looking through a preloved store and you come across

something you know will make a great gift, and for a fraction of its original price too! You r money st ays in Marlborough: Many preloved stores are run by local charitable organisations and volunteers, so profits go straight to those who need it most.

Like shopping for groceries or dropping off dry cleaning, make a visit to the local secondhand store part of your routine. Don’t get bogged down with looking through every item; instead, quickly go through racks waiting for something to catch your eye. That way, every visit is short and sweet since a lot of the merchandise you’ve seen before. It also makes it easy to spot what’s new and noteworthy.

Inspired to recycle: The flow of second-hand giving goes both ways. Items or clothes you no longer use, you can donate back to a preloved shop. The act of recycling not only enables us to feel good about our actions but, again, keeps money in the local economy.

The Hospice Shop is a treasure trove of donated items which helps us to fulfil our motto of turning 2nd hand goods into 1st class care

Hospice Shop, a treasure trove By Celeste Alexander When shopping for ‘special’ Christmas gifts, there’s a place you can go which is not only a treasure trove, but supports the local Hospice. The Hospice Shop has been going for nearly 13 years, accepting high quality preloved goods donated by the community and then sold instore. Profits from the shop go directly to Hospice Marlborough, manager Christine Law says. “In fact, the Hospice Shop raises two thirds of the annual funding needed from the community which is incredible. But this is only made possible because of the wonderful support we receive from those who donate and who shop with us,” she says. Christine describes the shop as being ‘full of wonderful curios’, perfect for Christmas shopping. “These are really special things you often can’t find in retail stores. We can have anything from beautiful crystal to jewellery. At the moment we have a lovely grandfather clock which would make a really unique gift for someone,” she says. There are also children’s books

Friday 1st December – 6.30pm Saturday 2nd December – 4.00pm Sunday 3rd December – 4.00pm

Blenheim beauty student Phoebe Leov has been named Marlborough’s top makeup student and one of the country’s top makeup students for this year. Phoebe is a Diploma of Beauty and Body Therapy student at the Blenheim campus of the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. She has won the regional section of the 2017 Wendy Hill Cosmetics National Student Award for Professional Photographic Bridal Makeup, a competition run among beauty therapy, cosmetology and beauty assistant students at the country’s major beauty training institutions. The competition is staged by the New Zealand makeup company, Wendy Hill Cosmetics, in association with industry educators to assist in the support of student studies and the improvement of makeup skills in the beauty profession generally. Wendy Hill Cosmetics Ltd managing director Tiffany Pule says the judges are impressed with the overall high calibre of entries received this year. “The standard reflected the tremendous amount of work that each student had put into the competition, and demonstrated their knowledge

of products and techniques and what styling suited their individual models,” she says. “Phoebe’s winning entry stood out because of the overall high standard of her makeup which reflected a good knowledge and understanding of makeup artistry and how to style a makeup to suit the individual model. “Her eye work was particularly well styled, and her

Shopping for Christmas Seven easy Christmas shopping tips for busy people trying to do their shopping on a budget.

1. Make a shopping list. 2. Set a spending limit. 3. Pay in cash. 4. Shop by yourself. 5. Tis the season to give, not buy. 6. Shop for sales in-store. 7. Don’t go crazy on the kids.

Something for everyone Henderson’s Ltd co-owner Tamzin Henderson with some of their great Christmas gift ideas.

Give the gift of time this Christmas.

Gifts for the tree or stocking By Celeste Alexander When looking for gift inspiration for your Christmas shopping, look no further than Henderson’s Ltd on Grove Road. Owners Lana Wilson and Tamzin Henderson have a range of fantastic products instore ready to be wrapped and put in the Christmas stocking. “We have some great gift ideas for $30 and under for all ages, from fishing knife

sets through to kid’s rods and reels,” Tamzin says. For those looking for something for the whole family to enjoy together, Henderson’s range of spas are a great option that can be enjoyed all year round. They may be too large to go under the Christmas tree, but Tamzin says there’s still time to get them up and running in time for Christmas and the holidays. For a gift that can be used when out on the water during

the holidays, a pedal powered kayak could be the ideal thing. “We will be hosting a demonstration day at Waikawa on December 3 where people can come along and try out the kayaks and water toys, so be sure to come along and see why these make such great gifts,” she says. Whether it’s a new fishing lure, life jackets for the family or a new reel, there’s something for everyone at Henderson’s. PBA

See a rescue helicopter up close By Celeste Alexander There will be a very special community day held this coming Sunday at Mitre 10 Mega, and it will be in support of a life saving air service that visits the region regularly - Life Flight. It’s Mitre 10 Mega’s 10th birthday and to celebrate the store has opted to do something ‘a little different’, marketing co-ordinator Gena Birtles says. “We previously supported the community bus for

10 years, so this year we decided that we would put funding into the Life Flight’s helicopter and air ambulance services. “When we first began talking about the sponsorship we had quite a few stories shared by our own staff members of their families and friends needing the service which emphasised the importance of the role they play in our community,” she says. When brainstorming on how they could further

fundraise, the idea was suggested to host a day for the community where the Life Flight helicopter would be displayed. A date was set which coincided with when the helicopter was due for servicing and Gena then arranged for an ambulance and fire engine to join in the fun. “It’s pretty special to get a helicopter for a day so I hope the public will come along and take the opportunity to look through it, talk to the Life Flight

team and pilot,” she says. There will be plenty of fun for the whole family including lucky dips, a sausage sizzle and free facepainting. All money raised on the day will be donated to the Life Flight Trust along with a cheque for $7000 that Mitre 10 Mega Marlborough will present, which is above and beyond the sponsorship they are already giving. The Life Flight Community Day will run from A Life Flight helicopter will be on display this Sunday at Mitre 10 Mega 11am - 3pm. Marlborough’s community day.

Trout released into local waterways By Bill McElhinney Crimson-flanked rainbow trout were released into four Marlborough waterways last week as part of Nelson Marlborough Fish and Game’s fishery enhancement programme. One hundred fish were released into the Taylor River, Spring Creek and two Pelorus tributaries. Fish and Game manager Rhys Barrier says the Taylor River and Spring Creek releases would provide close to town options for anglers, in particular the junior anglers of Blenheim who delight in the chance to catch trout in the Taylor River. “Staff regularly field numerous calls from elated junior anglers and their parents who have tasted success as a result of our releases,” Rhys says. They provide an outstanding angling experience and our members are excited at the possibility of casting to rainbow trout in a waterway close to town,” Barrie Clark, from the Marlborough Freshwater Anglers Club says “We applaud Fish and Game for providing opportunities for the youth of Blenheim to enjoy success and

learn skills out on a local river”. A release of trout was also carried out into the Opouri River near Rai Valley, and another upper Pelorus tributary, which have suffered from recruitment issues as a result of large flood events. “Putting the fish into these waterways allows us to get past the high mortality rate that juvenile fish in these rivers experience” Rhys says. “These particular fish weigh around a kilogram and are tagged with coloured numbered tags, so we are keen to hear from anglers who catch any of these trout.” The releases were funded by Nelson Marlborough fishing guides and Owen River Lodge. “It’s great to see the guiding industry funding some fish releases which will primarily benefit local anglers,”

Rhys says. “Fishing guides often cop a lot of flak, but many guides actually contribute back to the management of the fishery resource through casting clinics, voluntary ranger activity, and more recently sponsorship of fish releases.” Earlier last month 400 1.5 kg rainbow trout were also released within the upper Leatham and Branch River catchments, in this instance funded by Trust Power as mitigation for the impacts of the Branch hydro-electric power scheme. Licence holders or those wishing to give freshwater angling a try for the first time should get out and make the most of these new fish, which should be slightly easier to catch than their wild cousins and will make fine table fare, Rhys says.

Rally sprint drivers tackle Taylor Pass The Taylor Pass Rally Sprint was held at the weekend, attracting 27 competitors who arrived Saturday morning to tackle what is largely described as one the best pieces of road in the South Island. The first run towards the Awatere went without issue, but the return run proved to be Hayden Payne’s undoing when he slid wide on a tightening right hander not far from the summit and over the bank. The car suffered no major damage but probably dented the driver’s pride a little. Run two saw the Lancia Delta of Don Urquhart visit the scenery two corners below where Hayden’s Lancer came to rest. The rest of the day was to see a

titanic scrap between Richard Bateman and Neil Webb with Richard prevailing by the smallest of margins. Third place went to Jason Clark with Dave Gee in fourth. Unfortunately due to some issues with timing gear that had been brought up from Christchurch the Marlborough Car Club had to revert back to rally time with clocks which takes a considerable time to collate. The club would like to thank all the helpers for standing outside in cold and seriously dusty conditions and all the competitors for their patience in waiting for results.
