Goodbye Mrs E!

By Bill McElhinney Kaye Eccersall is a Renwick mum who started out at Renwick School as a teacher aide, working five hours a week in the school library. She enjoyed it so much she became a fully qualified teacher and now, after 33 years, ‘Mrs E’ as the pupils call her, is about to leave a job she has loved. Continued on page 2 Teacher Kaye Eccersall with some of her pupils, from left: Lizzie Youngman, Courtney Farley, Hayley Sutherland, Ben Partington, Kaeleigh Macdonald and Charlotte Brooke-Taylor.

Long-serving Renwick teacher leaving Continued from page 1 “I used to bring my two daughters, Jo and Sarah to the school,” Kaye says. “I joined the PTA, as you do, then I saw the teacher aide position advertised, so I applied and got the job, five hours a week. “I started off in the school library, and then my hours increased and I got involved with helping the teachers, taking small groups of children for special projects, helping with new entrants. “In 1994 the then principal, Ian Mackey, saw me working with the children and asked if I’d thought about becoming a teacher.

“I said it would be great, but I couldn’t afford to train. “Then Ian visited the College of Education in Christchurch and mentioned me to the principal there. “It turned out that they were just starting a new distance training programme, which meant I could study to be a teacher through correspondence and doing occasional on-site courses. “I was accepted into the first course and began studying in mid 1995. “I graduated in 1999 with a diploma, which, through further study, I upgraded to a degree.” It wasn’t easy, Kaye says. She had to juggle her teacher train-

ing studies with caring for her family and holding down a job. “But my kids were great, and Ian Mackey was so supportive during my training.” Renwick is a special school, Kaye says. “The staff is friendly, caring and supportive. “I love being with the kids in my class and I’ll miss them, but I may do some relieving later. When she finishes at the end of the term, Kaye plans to spend more time with her two grandchildren in Christchurch. “And dragon boating, reading and walking. “No more 7am to 5pm days, and

taking work home!” One of the students Kaye taught when she was a teacher aide, Tore Waechter, is coming to Renwick School next year as a teacher. “We’ll miss Kaye,” Principal Simon Heath says. “I don’t know any other teacher with such a record of service at one school. “We’ve always enjoyed working with Kaye and she commands such respect and love from her pupils. “She has a great sense of humour, which the kids really love, and they know she really cares about them. We do wish her well.”

Cake and memories By Celeste Alexander Christmas decorations, bubbles and cake - what better way for the Marlborough Parents Centre to celebrate four decades helping local families! The committee came together last Friday with some of the families they have seen through their classes and coffee groups to share morning tea and fun. One of the MPC’s long serving members, Marian Millar has been involved for 23 years. She became involved when her daughter Sarah was born, and says much has changed over the years. “I joined the antenatal classes to help out then went onto the committee 18 years ago. “In the earlier years the

we did was when the anesthetists wouldn’t work extra hours, but we

said women wanted epidurals available during birth and were eventu-

Asked what the most rewarding part of being involved with the MPC was, Marian replies; “the families”. “In pa r ticula r the strength of our coffee groups which are formed after antenatal classes are held. “A lot of people living out of town don’t have support in Blenheim but in these coffee groups they form a huge network and friendships. “I myself still enjoy these friendships and love catching up with families where ever I go. “It’s wonderful seeing the babies from when I first joined now becoming engaged, married and having children of their own,” she says.

Raynor has retired Picton volunteer firefighter Raynor Henson has retired after 62 years of service. Raynor, 86, joined the fire service in his early 20s and was the longestserving volunteer firefighter in the country before he hung up his helmet. He says he couldn’t have done his service without the support of his family. Two of the fire engines at the Picton station have been named “Rhub” and “Joan” in honour of Raynor and his wife.

Steam train’s first trip a hit By Cathie Bell Marlborough’s newest tourist attraction, a 100 year-old steam locomotive and carriages, is making friends across the district. The Marlborough Flyer made its first official trip from Picton to Blenheim and back last Friday, carrying guests and cruise ship passengers.

All along the route, people stopped their cars to watch the steam train pass, they waved, and cheered it on. Train operator Paul Jackson welcomed people at Picton railway station, where the Marlborough District Brass Band and a collection of cars from the Marlborough Vintage Car Club entertained the

crowd. He thanked the Marlborough community for its warm response to the train, and gave special thanks to KiwiRail and the Rail and Maritime Transport Union for helping it get running. Marlborough mayor John Leggett says the train is starting at the perfect time to celebrate the

Marlborough will switch its street lighting to long-lasting and brighter LED bulbs. Making the switch will save $150,000 a year on the public power bill for street lighting. The estimated cost to convert Marlborough’s street lighting to the energy-saving bulbs was $3 million, but the NZ Transport Agency will pick up 85 per cent of the cost if council makes the switch by December next year. Existing bulbs have to be replaced every two or three years but the LED bulbs have a 15 to 18-year lifespan.

resurgence of the district after last year’s earthquake. “It’s going to be a great attraction - who doesn’t love a steam train?” Tourists John and Denice Taylor, from Colorado in the United States, said they had come from the cruise ship and seen the crowds at the railway station and couldn’t resist a ride.

Fires bannned as big dry hits By Cathie Bell Fire restrictions are in place from 8am tomorrow as authorities warn people to be careful using machinery in the open with the district drying out rapidly. A restricted fire season is in place for the urban areas of Blenheim, Renwick, Seddon and Ward until further notice. That means a fire permit from the council is required to light a fire in the open air. However, Marlborough principal fire officer John Foley says there are unlikely to be

permits issued for big burns, and people should check the sites of any burnoffs they’ve had in the past few months, warning they could still be at risk of flaring up. “I’ve seen smoke still coming off significant burns in the district. That sort of thing is going to give us grief over summer.” Signs are going up tomorrow to warn people not to go into the upper reaches of the Wither Hills farm park during the heat of the day because of the danger of being caught up there in a fire.

By Bill McElhinney “What about us?” long-time Ward resident Jim Devine asks. Jim is brandishing a newsletter from NCTIR (North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery), the team working on restoring State Highway One. The newsletter reports that tickets have been issued to give Kaikoura residents a sneak peek of the changes and repairs to the closed section of the highway. Four wheel drive buses are making trips to each worksite north of Half Moon Bay and back and more than 160 people have got tickets. “That’s great for the Kaikoura folk,” Jim says, “but what about the people in Seddon, Ward, Clarence and Kekerengu? “We’ve all been knocked around as much if not more than Kaikoura. We’d like to be offered trips as well.” Jim, who has lived all his 78 years in Ward, started out as a cray fisherman and was also a deer farmer and fencing contractor before he retired. “We would have loved to have been able to bring those living north of our Clarence checkpoint to see the construction progress before State Highway 1 opens,” Mike Seabourne, from NCTIR says. “But due to the intensity of the construction activity north of Ohau Point we are unable to run bus trips through the northern end of the worksite. Crews are working 24 hours a day to complete repairs and upgrades before the road opening. “We are very conscious the northern

“The committee has been working closely with the council’s aquaculture group which is organising industry displays in Blenheim, tours of local factories and also a Mad Friday for mussel appreciation day, so keep an eye on our website for more information.” The MC for the festival will be comedian Andre King and new to the lineup will be a strong man and strong woman competition. “We will be bringing in athletes from around the country and it will be an opportunity for people to get involved,” Hans says. Early bird tickets are on sale from today and are available through Ticketek.

By Celeste Alexander The headlining act for the 2018 Havelock Mussel Festival is New Zealand band The Black Seeds. Festival co-ordinator Hans Nielson says this is ‘really good news’ and a big step up for the event. The Havelock Mussel Festival will be held on Saturday, March 17 which coincides with Saint Patrick’s Day, and will be the 15th year it’s been held. “We will have an Irish band performing to keep the St Pat’s day theme going. “We also have a really cool week planned leading up to the festival which will make it even more exciting,” Hans says.

This special edition marks the 125th anniversary when Mr. Jack Daniel opened the doors of his Red Dog SaloonTM. Formerly situated on the Lynchburg town square, all that remains of the Red Dog SaloonTM are myths and legends - until now.We are pleased to release the limited edition Red Dog SaloonTM, commemorating the days when you could buy a drink of Jack’s smooth sippin’ Tennessee Whiskey in the town where it was made. Like every drop of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, this limited edition is distilled right here in Lynchburg, just as it was when Mr. Jack opened his saloon back in 1892. And, if the Red Dog Saloon was anything like its sister watering hole, the White Rabbit SaloonTM, the house was packed with music, camaraderie and conversation. We hope you enjoy yours the same way. It’s a nice facility, not bad at all. But what about having the English name on the front as well?

We’ve had so much positive feedback about the new facility, people really love it.

It’s my first visit to the new library and I think it’s great. Everything is so well laid out.

I really love it, such great spaces with seats and lovely windows to let the light in. It’s great!

I’ve been a library member for years, and this is a really great facility for Picton.

Dear Ed, Walter Hilhorst has got to be on another planet. Trout to his mind are an introduced ‘pest’ but trout bring in a minimum of $90 million a year into Taupo alone. An economic resource here in Nelson Marlborough with locals fishing plus wealthy tourists. And trout give recreational value and pleasure.

Native fish aren’t wiped out. I see native fish when fishing, e.g. cockabullides, inangas etc. Habitat is the key to the health of a river and any fish. Dairy cows, pine trees with clear felling run-off, pollen dust and humans with effluents are the introduced ‘pests’. Trev Dagg Blenheim

Still on trout Dear Ed, It is disappointing to read letters that are so ill-informed as that of Walter Hilhorst’s (Wed November 29). Since the arrival of humans to this country there have been massive changes to an environment that was unique in the world, and the impact of trout is minor compared to most other effects of human occupation.. The impact of trout on some native species pales to insignificance compared to land clearance. Mr Hilhorst talks of trout as predators but ignores the predatory effects of many other species. Human interference with the environment, the worst of which are water extraction

from rivers, land development, intensive agriculture and declining water quality and quantity are the major causes of native fish decline. The drive for irrigation schemes and intensive agriculture over the last two decades has resulted in the greatest environmental degradation since the late 19th century, and successive governments have been ‘sleep walking’ through it. Mr Hilhorst criticizes Fish and Game for enhancing healthy outdoor activities and, ignores the fact that anglers licence fees have paid millions of dollars towards water quality protection. Fish and Game have been leading the defense of water quality for two decades in

the absence of Government and Regional Councils doing their jobs. Fish and Game operate under legislation set up by Parliament and trout have a legal status protected by that legislation. All activities undertaken by Fish and Game are incorporated in a Management Plan approved by the Minister of Conservation and detailed in an annual Business Plan. Significant resources go into providing a healthy outdoor activity for young and old, all financed by licence holders; no Government or ratepayers money is used and all necessary approvals are obtained before they are carried out. Christmas parade a hit in Blenheim

By Cathie Bell The annual Blenheim Christmas parade was a big hit with the crowds that gathered to watch the floats move through town. The parade was held last Saturday afternoon, after the Mistletoe Market. Organiser Katrina Lange, from Marlborough4Fun, says they were ‘really really pleased’ with the parade. There were a lot more floats this year, she says, a good variety of them and some new ones they haven’t had before. “The streets were just packed, it was lovely

to see. I saw a wall of happy people.” Katrina says a big part of why the parade was such a hit was the effort that people went to making good floats. “They put so much effort into it, we really appreciate it.” The first place-winner in the float category was the Air Training Corp’s Airbus, and second place was Plunket Marlborough’s Polar Express. First place in the walker category was Marlborough Girl Guides.

Sheira Hudson as the fairy and Siris Allott as the Jester in the Picton Little Theatre production of Snow White.

Family fun with Snow White and the Dwarfs at Picton By Bill McElhinney It’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but not quite as you know it. “It’s based on the traditional British story of Snow White,” writer and director Gillian Allott says. But Gillian has taken the story and given it a special Picton flavour, as well as injecting lots of humour into the show. Gillian, who teaches maths and digital technology at Queen Charlotte College, has written and directed five previous plays, but this is the first pantomime she has done. “Pantomime involves lots of jokes, slapstick and audience

participation,” Gillian says. “It’s good family fun. “Some of the jokes are directed at the adults and some of the more slapstick comedy is for the children. There will even be the traditional pie in the face!” The all-Picton cast of 17 includes a good number of Queen Charlotte College students, Gillian says. This pantomime follows on from the success of the Picton Little Theatre production last year, Cinderella. Snow White opens on Friday and runs until Sunday with performances at 7.30pm and a matinee on Saturday at 3pm.

POLLARD PARK FROM 4PM

Festive and joyful Qualified watch maker and technician with over 42 years experience. Specialists in watch and clock repairs, engraving.

When it comes to getting people into the festive spirit, the annual Christmas in the Park event never fails. Fun, live entertainment, Christmas carols and hot food are just some of the exciting things set for the evening which takes place this Sunday, December 10 from 4pm at Pollard Park in Blenheim. It’s the perfect opportunity for the Marlborough community to come together to celebrate all things Christmas, and has something for all ages to enjoy.

Take along your own picnic, blankets and seating and settle in for a relaxing evening, or treat yourself to a sausage sizzle or one of the mouth watering selections from the surrounding food sites. Mr Whippy will be onhand with his icecream and sweet treats as well as a coffee cart for hot drinks. Admission is free, however donations will be taken for the local hospital chaplaincy.

Christmas in the Park an evening for all The committee behind the popular annual Christmas in the Park has been working hard behind the scenes to bring you an event the whole family can enjoy. Christmas in the Park is brought to you by the Blenheim Ministers Association, along with major sponsors, and has been a well supported event on the Marlborough calendar for a

number of years. Committee member Lorraine Milmine is one of many who have put in their time and energy to organise everything from entertainment through to co-ordinating carparking. Asked what would be some of the highlights this year, Lorraine says ‘definitely the performers’. “We are thrilled to have Elin

Tomos back this year with her beautiful singing voice and I’m sure if people haven’t already heard her yet, they will really enjoy her. “For the younger audience members the Springlands and Redwoodtown schools will be great as well as the Bcre8ve NZ performance group. “We also have Marlborough

District Brass Band, Blenheim band The Big Kahuna, as well as the beautiful voices from Vanuatu Sound. So as you can see there really is something for everyone,” she says. Christmas in the Park begins at 4pm.

All roadworthy motorcycles are welcome to join in the Toy Run this Saturday. Have fun dress up or decorate in Christmas theme.

Cheyne Pharland and Georgia Appo were volunteering for the Salvation Army and collecting toys for last year’s Toy Run.

Vintage, modern and three-wheeled motorcycles - you name it and you might just see it on the roads this coming Saturday. The Marlborough Branch of the Ulysses Club is holding its annual Toy Run and is inviting the public to join in, enjoy the ride and help to collect toy donations for the Salvation Army. The Toy Run began nearly a decade ago, collecting thousands of gifts from the community and creating a sense of camaraderie among riders. The very first ride was organised by Jane Laing, Al Harper, and Pete Rickerby, and 150 motorcycle riders took part. Over the past few years, the number of riders ranged between 80 and 120 and have been all ages. Grandparents and children, couples and even pet owners with their dogs

have turned up for the Toy Run. This year organisers Tim and Melissa Wills are hoping to attract as many riders. “Anyone with a legal motorcycle or scooter is encouraged to come along. It’s a lot of fun and for a good cause,” they say. Riders are to meet at the Woodbourne Tavern, Renwick at 12noon before leaving at 1pm. The public can drop off toy donations to the Salvation Army van where volunteers will be on hand to gratefully accept them. They will also follow the ride and can stop to collect toys from people along the way. The ride will finish at the Blenheim School where a barbecue will be cooking up sausages for a gold coin donation. The public is welcome to go to Blenheim School to check out of the motorcycles and make a toy donation.

All go on the harbour’s waters By Cathie Bell The regionals sailing regatta run by Queen Charlotte Yacht Club last weekend saw several local sailors succeed and a great weekend for all. Club rear commodore Christel Hopkins says there was ‘wind, plenty of sunshine, a great assortment of boats and some awesome sailing’. The club’s sailors were joined by a large group of Nelson sailors and also a few from Timaru, she says. Saturday’s conditions were perfect with 10-15 knot northwesterly winds, Christel says. The Rainbow and Green Optimist fleet sailed in front of the club, while all the other fleets battled it out on the racing area of the Interislander regatta. “With 14 yachts inner Harbour and 45 outside, divided over 10 classes, it was a busy time for the race organisation and support boat crew. “ Christel says Jasper Hopkins had a great result in the Lasers category and is off to Nationals in January.

Ian seventh in world champs Spring Creek man Ian Woolley has completed the World Ploughing Championships in Kenya at the weekend and placed seventh in the conventional class. The USA took first place in this category followed by Ireland and Denmark. Fellow New Zealand competitor Bob Mehrtens took second place in the reversible class, losing out to Ireland.

Sheat sets record Marlborough Girls’ College sprinter Lucy Sheat set a new national record and personal best time over 100m at the New Zealand schools track and field champs on Sunday. The 18-year-old beat her previous 100m personal best of 11.68 at Kennedy Park in Hastings by recording 11.59 in the final and breaking a long-standing record for the event. Marlborough Boys’ College sprinter Alex Dawson finished third in the senior boys 100m final, in a time of 11.03. Jasper Hopkins getting ready to race on Saturday. Photo provided.

Ella Wilcox from the club took the South Island title in the P-Class races, and while the club was missing its best Starling sailor, Emily Overend, and the two Cowley boys of the club, Oliver and Suede,

sailed easily to first and second placings. Club sailor River Hopkins placed a close second in the Optimist Open category, with Louie Poletti not in his usual form placing fourth, Christel says.

Harrier Club summer run

It was great to see the enthusiasm of the Green and Rainbow fleet sailors, she says, with the Amos girls taking places 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Rainbow fleet and George Lindstrom from QCYC taking first

in the Green fleet. “We got some competitive and fun racing in on the weekend, but the whole atmosphere from the morning breakfasts to prize giving was priceless.”

The Marlborough Harrier Club summer runners, Megan’s run: Meet at Whitehead Park, Brooklyn Drive, for a comfortable run/walk. These runs are non-competitive and are made as enjoyable as possible. Join in and run all events or just the ones you want to. The cost is $2 per week or $20 for the season (families $25 for the season). For further enquiries contact Bill and Julie 572-9792.

Give golf a go

Brooklyn Croquet Club members enjoy a Mr Whippy ice-cream break during a recent crazy hat themed fun day. The day also included a number of games of “handicapped” golf croquet as well as some more unusual croquet related contests, and a lunch time barbecue. Members entered into the spirit and all, even though a little cold, had a most enjoyable day, club member Peter Burt says.
