Smiling teacher retires after 23 years Continued from page 1 Jenny says she loves being around children, and the community feel Rapaura School has. “There are families that have been here for generations, there is lots to celebrate as part of the school.” She started working at the school 23 years ago, with her daughter at the school and her son about to start, when she was asked to become a teacher aide after volunteering in

the classroom. “I jumped at the chance to work at the school I loved being at. “I thought I would probably only stay until my children left, but I loved the job, and I stayed on a whole lot longer.” Principal Michelle Spencer says Jenny will be sorely missed by all staff and students as the caring, smiling support who ‘just get’s us.’ “She has a natural ability to con-

nect with all and a way where she makes people feel special.” She says one story that shows Jenny’s personality the best is from a parent who says when her children were in the junior school years ago, she was trying to explain the importance of smiling. “I was explaining how it changes the whole atmosphere when you see someone smiling at you - how a smile makes you immediately

feel warm and loved, relaxed and valued but the kids weren’t really that interested in what I had to say because they knew a person who made them feel all of this and it was Jenny Stark! “Jenny is the finest possible example of someone who makes us feel loved and valued, in turn she brings out our confidence and makes the moment so friendly and relaxed.”

By Bill McElhinney Blenheim’s newest hospitality centre has opened and is already proving popular. What was the Cornerstone bar and restaurant in Queen Street has been transformed into the Good Home gastro pub. “The Good Home concept was developed by Lion Breweries and is an evolution from the popular Macs Brew Bars and Speights Ale Houses,” Hayley Derry, who operates the Blenheim Speights Ale House with her husband John, says. “Lion takes note of overseas trends in how people eat and drink and then develop establishments to suit New Zealanders.” Good Home is not another Speights Ale House, Hayley says. “It’s designed to make people feel at home, it has that homely feel and a lot of different spaces. People can come and find a place where they feel comfortable, whether it’s having a drink, dining, or just a coffee.

“And it’s family-friendly as well. People are welcome to bring their children or elderly relatives. There’s a place for everyone.” Hayley and her team have had a lot of input into the design. “We chose to reflect a Garden Marlborough-type theme,” Hayley says. “We chose upholstery and fittings that we hope make it distinctive, reflective of Marlborough and the flora and fauna in the area.” The building and fitting out has all been carried out by local tradespeople, Hayley says. “The upholstery, the flooring, and the building – we’ve kept it local. It was important to us to have locals involved as much as possible.” The menu has also been carefully chosen to reflect modern dining trends. “Yes, we do have main meals such as slow-cooked lamb, ribs, roast chicken and fillet steak,” Hayley says. “And there are burgers and fries and platters to share. “But we also have small plates, corn fritters, salmon

gravalax, prawn cutlets and the like. “Some people may choose to have several small plates rather than a main. “And then there is what we call ‘nude food’ – dishes fea-

turing raw vegetables, marinated raw beef, and marinated raw fish.” Good Home will be open seven days a week, Hayley says. “People need somewhere to

go, especially at the weekends and the Speights Ale House has been so busy, we’ve had to turn people away. “So this gives people another option. The only day we won’t be open is Christmas Day.”

Young artists bake in the sun By Bill McElhinney A wall on the Warehouse car park in Blenheim has been transformed, thanks to the hard work of a group of Marlborough Boys’ College students. “It was an idea we had wanted to implement for some time,” Bread of Life Trust manager Brian Gull says. “A sign on the wall pointed to the Gecko Cafe, which Bread of Life runs, and we wanted to do something bright with the rest of the space.” He approached Blenheim artist Gynelle Blake, who transforms grey Chorus-owned telecommunication cabinets around Blenheim into colourful paintings. Gynelle contacted Boys’ College art teacher Debbie Cave-Higgins, who threw her support behind the proposal, persuading some of the college art students to donate their time and talent. The result is a colourful, eye-catching mural of stylised Marlborough scenes designed and painted mainly by the students. “We wanted to give them creative freedom, so they came up with

Wine station on offer

By Cathie Bell Blenheim’s railway station building is to have a new lease of life, with the operators of the Marlborough Flyer steam train teaming up with Michael and Angela Wentworth to set up a winebar and café showcasing the best of Marlborough’s food and wine. The Wine Station has applied for a liquor licence, which is out for public consultation now. Michael says that if all goes well, the store should be open by the end of January. Michael says he and wife Angela have been looking for a business opportunity the two could do when he

Heroes recognised By Cathie Bell Marlborough’s selfless, optimistic and generous citizens were honoured for their service on Friday the 8th of December at the annual Kiwibank Local Hero Awards. Thirteen Marlborough locals received their Local Hero medals at a special ceremony at the Marlborough Convention Centre, as part of the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards. Mayor John Leggett, who presented the medals to this year’s winners, praised the recipients for their achievements in the community. “They are dedicated people who have all had an impact on our community in various ways and I’m pleased to see them being recognised. “It’s important that we, as a community, take every opportunity to acknowledge the contribution they have made and the service they’ve extended to others.” The 2018 Kiwibank Local Heroes for Marlborough are: Kevin Moseley; Tania Silcock; Dean Marshall; Shirley Hocquard;

Kathryn Margaret Webb; Donald Helman; Walter Scott; Ben Hide; Elizabeth Buttimore; Jason Walker; Mark Rea; Maddison Anderson; and Jennifer Anne Eatherley. The Kiwibank Local Hero awards celebrate and honour those who have made a positive contribution to their region, town, suburb or community. There are 340 specially-made Local Hero medals to be presented nationwide over the next few weeks with one national Local Heroes winner to be announced at the New Zealander of the Year Gala Awards in Auckland of February next year. Kiwibank Acting CEO Mark Stephen says many of these medal winners are unsung heroes, whose selflessness has had a profound effect on the lives of so many in the community.” “Those acts of charity, optimism and commitment are what make New Zealand such a special place to live in. We think it’s important for us to give thanks to these people and that’s why we sponsor the Local Hero Awards.”

Boys’ College economics and business teachers Jenny Thomas and Ryan Peters with students Oscar Martin, Spencer Lane, Louis Pinker-Meihana and Finlay Hobbs.

Real business experience offered By Bill McElhinney Taking care of business will become a reality for some Marlborough Boys’ College students next year. For 2018 the college is offering a new course, Business Enterprise, in which the students will start and run a small business. The boys will come up with a business idea and, if it gets the green light, will take the business through from market research, marketing, promotion and sales. The course incorporates NCEA credits at level two or three and also makes use of the resources of the Young Enterprise Trust and their YES programme. The Business Enterprise is the initiative of accounting and business teacher Ryan Peters. Ryan worked for 20 years as an accountant in the North Island before deciding, at age 40, to retrain as a teacher. “I’m passionate about working with young people and sharing my passion for accounting and business” Ryan says. Ryan moved to Marlborough in January with his wife Melanie, who is also a trained

teacher, and their children Billy and Brodie. “The course is designed to be very practical,” Ryan says. “It aims to give the students real life experience. They’ll have to develop a business idea, raise the capital, make the product then market it and sell it. Ryan now needs some help from the Blenheim business community. “As part of the course, each team will need the assistance of a mentor. The mentor can be anyone with business knowledge or experience who is keen to help students. “The time commitment would be as much as they wish – but usually no more than an hour a fortnight.” Ryan says. “As part of the classes we would like to get in local experts to discuss things like social media use, website design, marketing, design and print. “The key is providing real life learning and inspiration to our future business leaders.” If you would like to help Ryan with this course, you can contact him at ryanp@ mbc.school.nz

Exotic Phobia Dear Ed, Walter Hilhorst’s rant against Fish and Game releasing trout was absurd. Trout were released in 1880s in the Opawa. Native species like eels, koura crayfish and whitebait, cockabully co-exist with trout since then. Native grayling declined well before trout and in streams where there were no trout. The reason is not known for decline. The exotic phobia is very selective. Aren’t potatoes, beef steak roast lamb, polyanthus, petunias, bumblebees etc all introduced and welcomed? Keeping the introduced Dear Ed, I respond to your correspondent, Walter Hilhorst’s recent letter comparing trout to stoats and possums with one question – what about the thousands of other introduced flora and fauna? Cows, sheep, clover, pine trees, pigs, fruit trees, salad vegetables, wheat… the list is endless. We would be reduced to a miserable existence if we eliminated eve-

rything introduced; aren’t humans in a way an introduced species as well? While I suspect Mr Hilhorst’s heart is in the right place, the contribution to New Zealand by introduced species is incalculable and it is how we pay for the schools, hospitals, firemen and police. Time to grow up. Jason Foord Auckland

Dear Ed, Walter Hilhorst targets both trout and the Fish and Game organisation in his emotive letter published in your newspaper on 29th November. In stating that trout have caused the extinction of several native fish species he neglects to name any such species, for obvious reasons. No such evidence exists. In his criticism of Fish and Game, he ignores the fact that the strong advocacy of that organisation for quality freshwater habitats has been to the advantage not just of trout but of the native fish and invertebrate species which Mr Hilhorst clearly values. Accordingly, he and like-minded folk owe Fish and Game a debt of gratitude. Indeed, new Conservation

Zephyr Jones Renwick School A quad bike so I can go riding in the forest.

Minister Eugenie Sage, speaking at one of her first conferences just a fortnight ago, noted her admiration for Fish and Game and the benefits for many species its work has brought about. A simple example of this is the fact that when Fish and Game staff across the country engage in mid-summer fish rescue activities, as rivers dry up, native fish species make up the majority of the fish salvaged from pools and moved to permanent waters. No distinction is made by Fish and Game. Environmental degradation should be the real target of Mr Hilhorst’s concerns. Barrie Clark Secretary, Marlborough Freshwater Anglers’ Club

Trout fun police Dear Ed, I was intrigued by Walter Hilhorst’s letter of 29 November. 160 years of acclimatisation by trout in our rivers has resulted in relatively stable/ balanced river ecosystems. Trout are only a threat to native species when the environment is ‘stressed’ through other causes, such as inappropriate land use, or drainage, in the catchment. Luddite responses never work. Young trout are now also key food sources for cormorants, eels, and various wading birds (all natives). I assume Walter Hilhorst also wants to charge kayakers, rafters, family picnics, swimmers, whitebaiters, blackberry pickers, mushroom collectors, trampers, walkers, mountain bikers, and all the other people who crush poor little native microbes, annelids and arthropods under their feet as they walk along river beds and banks to pursue their ‘ecologically disastrous activities’? He may also want to charge those whose farming practices also reduced the native habitats and consequently altered our aquatic environments, or is he just a zealous member of the ‘fun police’? Rex N. Gibson Christchurch

The price of butter Dear Ed, I was at the supermarket recently and to my surprise and disgust, I saw a huge pile of butter with the price $6.00 a pack - not only overpriced but a reduced size from the usual 500 grams to 400 grams. Do the producers and retailers think shoppers are so stupid that they do not realise what a huge increase this is per 100 grams - there may be the odd unwary shopper who do not realise it is a smaller pack. It is hard to understand why butter produced in this country is as expensive as export prices, especially when the price paid to farmers is not high currently. Fonterra is happy to increase the price to consumers when the payout is high but never drop the prices when the price paid to farmers goes down. Scorpio Blenheim

Tinsel, bikes and toys By Celeste Alexander The Ma rlborough branch of the Ulysses Club donned their Christmas hats and decorated their bikes in tinsel for their annual Toy Run which took place last Saturday. Spokesperson Tim Willis says it was well supported by both the club and local riders, with just shy of 100 taking part. Tim and his wife Me-

lissa had the pleasure of dressing as Santa and leading the Toy Run which left from Woodbourne Tavern in Renwick and finished at Blenheim School. Salvation Army volunteers collected boxes and boxes of donated toys along the way. “Thank you to everyone who supported the Toy Run, helping to make it another successful event,” Tim says.

Jacqueline and John Ross after mayor John Leggett granted their citizenship.

Feeling lucky to make it By Cathie Bell Part-way through last Friday’s citizenship ceremony, John Ross leaned over to his wife Jacqueline and whispered ‘I made it’. The two, originally from Britain, are among the group of 21 Marlborough people who became New Zealand citizens at a ceremony on Friday afternoon. Also in the group is the Attridge family – father Eliot is head of mathematics at Marlborough Boys’ College and mother Nicola is head of science at Marlborough Girls’ College. “You can’t escape us, we have

the place covered,” Eliot jokes. John and Jacqueline were dressed in their best Scots clothes for the ceremony, with John wearing a kilt in the Ross tartan from Edinburgh. Living in New Zealand for 10 years and Marlborough for one, John says he nearly didn’t make it to the citizenship ceremony. “I had a cardiac arrest on Waitangi Day and was flown to Wellington for treatment.” It was touch and go for a while, and it was with relief John whispered ‘I made it’ to Jacqueline during the ceremony.

Planting for health Plant-based food advocate Maia Andrea Bahlsen at Te Paranui.

Maia Andrea Bahlsen talks to Cathie Bell about plant-based diets, permaculture, yoga, and her natural lifestyle at Te Paranui.

There’s a quirky multi-coloured letterbox on State Highway One to Picton, north of Tuamarina, and just before the first passing lane. It leads to Te Paranui, a patch of land where Maia Andrea Bahlsen is bringing her healthy living principles to life. Born in Germany, Maia worked as a commercial lawyer in London bringing franchises to Germany, which she describes as her ‘first life’ before marrying a Swiss man and focussing on raising a family. That brought her into contact with Family Constellation healing, and she started a healing clinic in Switzerland. Her son’s birth had a big impact on her life, she got divorced, and then started thinking about what to do next. “Looking round in Europe, it was too crowded… with so many coming into Europe, it was time for some to move out. I decided that would be me and my son.” They had been to New Zealand on holiday and decided here would be the perfect place to live. Originally, she planned to set up a carbon sink investment that people

in Europe could buy into, offsetting their carbon expenditure, but that didn’t really take off. She went to Hawaii to learn a special form of yoga, and learnt about the plant-based food lifestyle from her teachers.

“If we change, we can change the world”. “They were so healthy and so shiny and so amazing… They were the first real vegans I met and they’d never said a word. “I was just so impressed with them, their mana and their love for everything, animals and people.” They became role models for her, and she too has become vegan. Yoga started Maia’s working life in Marlborough and now she has founded a plant-based, permaculture lifestyle and is sharing it with others, offering her Family Constellation healing, yoga, and essential oils at a special clinic built on the property near Koromiko. With some residents and visiting WWOOFERS, Te Paranui is

growing fruit and vegetables, and Maia runs plant-based cooking workshops in a special kitchen built to house the education. As well as running classes for the public, Maia has been working with schools to offer students a chance to pick their own food and cook it. She also provides a home for retired racing greyhounds, horses, and other animals needing refuge. Maia says Te Paranui feeds my passion – food, animals, and education. “It’s a (w)holistic lifestyle, with the w and without.” She started her healthy living project about a year and a half ago, when the land came up for sale privately. “I didn’t even know this place existed. No-one knew what was behind the wall. “I was totally in love with it, the wilderness and trees, the tranquillity of the place.” To live in harmony with nature is her passion, she says, and she saw the land could be productive with a bit of work put in. As well as the yoga, cooking school, and healing clinic, Te

Paranui also offers a B&B accommodation service. Her vision of having a patch of land to be at peace and in harmony with nature and compassionate with animals and people is being realised at Te Paranui. The rivers, animals, people – we are all connected, Maia says. “If we change, we can change the world. “If you do your own garden, that counts. If you do my permaculture thing, that counts. If you do your yoga practice in the evening, that counts. It makes a difference, everything in the world is connected, so it counts.” Marlborough has turned into a welcoming place for her and her philosophy, Maia says. “It all came together for me, in my journey, everything came together.” There have been ‘heaps’ of people interested in or who have also adopted a plant-based food lifestyle in Marlborough, she says, and regular monthly community dinners are well-attended. “I thought I was the only one, but I have met all these beautiful people here.”

Blossoms Homebased Childcare Looking for Childcare in 2018? Blossoms Home-Based Childcare service was established in July this year by Janine Collett after working more than 25 years in early childhood education, and more recently over the past four years in the home-based sector, an area she is highly passionate about. Janine’s passion for the home-based childcare sector has seen exceptional growth for Blossoms, creating a high demand for this type of childcare. “I love seeing the relationships that the children develop with their educators, that is something really special,” she says. Janine has a number of home-based educators throughout the region who open their homes to care for up to four children at a time. These low ratios are what makes home-based childcare ‘unique’, Janine says, and provides a real sense of security for children and their families. “The types of relationships children develop in the first three years of life, sets them up for the rest of their lives, so having that one core person caring for them in an early childhood education setting is highly beneficial”. “Often educators become part of the child’s family,” Janine smiles. “Being happy, content and having a sense of belonging makes for the perfect learning environment.” Janine is looking for new educators to join Blossoms Home-based Childcare, in the Marlborough region. “I have had a number of families inquiring about childcare spaces for the New Year so if you are reading about this

Blossoms Homebased Childcare owner Janine Collett reading books with Ella, Ollie and Tyson.

and would like to learn more, please contact me for a confidential chat,” she says. Benefits to being a home-based educator means you work from home and to your own set hours. You can also have your own child with you whilst you are earning an income doing something enjoyable. Blossoms provide a very personal service where all Educators feel sup-

ported in their role. “It’s a lot of fun, very rewarding and I’m always here to provide support,” she says. For any further information regarding all options of childcare, including an Au-Pair, Nanny or Home-Based Educator, please feel free to contact Janine 0274247540 or email janine@ blossomschildcare.co.nz PBA

Farmers far from filthy By Michael Wilson Local Rai Valley farmers are thrilled with the response of three teenage students from Rai Valley Area School about water quality. The three Year 13 students had spent much of their year in Environmental Science studying the quality of water in local streams and catchments. They found that local farmers have been doing plenty to improve the quality in the Pelorus catchment. Inspired by the farmers’ efforts the students came up with their own actions, rolling up their sleeves and getting involved in planting up a wetlands area, as well as some riparian planting around a local stream. Not satisfied with that, and concerned at some of the bad

press farmers had received during the election, the students also designed a poster illustrating the work being done by local farmers. They then took the poster, along with a basket of scones down to the Rai Valley RD1 store. One of students, Olivia Partridge, hoped their efforts might help ‘people appreciate farmers more’, and felt it was a small gesture of thanks. Teacher, Siobhan Skinner, says she been impressed by the students’ passion and commitment towards making a difference. She also wished to acknowledge the support and visits from Marlborough District Council scientists and a Landcare representative who took time to visit and help the girls with their study.

Ranch animals star in new series of books plover chick he was hand raising The chick had been found abandoned and Julian took over caring for it, and then wrote a story about Peter the Plover going around the various farm animals looking for his family. The farmyard cat eyes the chick up as a potential lunch, but the little plover is rescued by the two farmyard dogs, who then adopt the chick. The animal tales are beautifully illustrated and one of the stories is even done in rhyme. Walnut Ranch riding instructor Mallory Hantz has also written one of the books about Toby the horse at the riding school. The books have been printed by Blenheim firm Prisma Print. “It’s an all-local venture,” Katie says. She hopes the animal tales will find their way into libraries around the country. In the meantime the Walnut Ranch folk are gearing up for the busy summer holiday season where people can come and see the real animal characters featured in the books.

By Bill McElhinney The animals at Walnut Ranch are about to become famous family favourites. Walnut Ranch is a Blenheim riding school and animal park in Springlands where you can see birds, bunnies, ducks, chickens, llamas, sheep, dogs, cats, horses, a donkey, and a miniature Angus. Walnut Ranch is owned by Katie and Jakob Stadler and now Katie and her son Julian have written and published a series of books featuring their animals. “It was my mum, Anne Wilson, who suggested writing stories about the animals,” Katie says. “I have a background in graphic design and photography and I enjoy taking photos around the farm so it seemed like a good idea. “So we started writing stories, aimed at children up to 10-12 years of age, using the animals as the characters, and I illustrated them with a mixture of photos and graphics.” Julian, a Year 10 student at Marlborough Boys’ College, was inspired to write a book about a

Biddy Kate’s Café Biddy Kate’s Irish Bar got a whole lot sweeter earlier this year when owners Terry and Audrey Sloan opened their newly renovated Biddy Kate’s Café. The café faces Alfred Street with its own entrance and takes on a completely different feel to the joining Irish Bar which opens out to Market Street North. With a ‘rustic meets modern industrial’ decor and relaxed ambiance, Biddy Kate’s Café has become a lively meeting place for those wanting to enjoy delicious hot coffee, breakfast, lunch or a quick bite to eat. Terry and Audrey have embraced the building’s character and history by incorporating the original brick walls with new wooden accents, large glass light fittings and chalkboards to give it its own unique personality. Another feature that has been a huge hit is the outdoor deck seating area where diners can bask in the sunshine and relax with friends any time of the day that the café/bar is open. “One of the things we are doing is having the café open the same hours as the bar, so anyone can have coffee from morning to late in the evening. “There is also cabinet food available during these hours so people can enjoy the savoury

The breakfast menu runs from 8.30am to 2pm Monday to Friday and Saturday from 9am - 2pm. The daily specials menu is available all day and evening and features dishes such as crispy chicken salad and an open sandwich served with salad, avocado mash and strawberries. To finish off the meal there’s a selection of desserts to sweeten the palate. If it’s not coffee you want, the bar is open to serve wine, beer and cocktails as well as a

large selection of Irish and Scotts whiskeys. “The wines we serve are sourced from Marlborough and throughout New Zealand, and our reds are a mix of local, Australian, and Spanish,” Audrey says. “Our cocktails are also amazing. Our bartender attended the European Bartending School in London and he specialises in cocktails, so he can make anything you want. “Choose one from our cocktail list or ask him for something different... he can do it. “On hot days like we are having, the frozen fruit cocktails are a real hit.” For breakfast, lunch or dinner, or for something refreshing and delicious, visit Biddy Kate’s Café.

‘Dawn Chorus’

PETER, Richard John (Dik, Dikie): 16.7.1951 – 8.12.2017. A short courageous battle has come to an end for a true soldier, aged 66 years. Son of the late Jack and Florence Peter. Brother to Don Peter, Maggie and Richard Musson. Best friend to his children Rebekah and Benjamin. Much loved Poppa to Emma, Jaymes and Dylan. An uncle and great uncle to Jaimee and Matt Watson, Jonathon and Paula Musson and their children. A very special friend to Rosie and many others. In lieu of cards and flowers, a donation to the Marlborough Hospice or St John would be appreciated for the great service we have received. A celebration of Dik’s life will be held at the Polo Park, 117 Redwood Street, Blenheim on Saturday 16 December at 1.00pm followed by private cremation at the Cloudy Bay Crematorium. CLOUDY BAY FUNERAL SERVICES BLENHEIM F.D.A.N.Z. Fairhall resident Frank Metcalfe has written his first novel.

Frank’s tale of lost artist Sophie Jones and Charlotte Jones are part of the cast for Sharon Rennie School of Dance’s production ‘Dawn Chorus’. The Sharon Rennie School of Dance will be giving its second performance of the year ‘Dawn Chorus’ which is a celebration of the bush and birdlife in New Zealand on December 16 at the ASB Theatre. The show will feature waterfalls, climbing clematis, lava flows as well as an

assortment of New Zealand’s rich and diverse birdlife. Performers are aged from pre-schoolers through to adults and promises a period of ‘relaxation and delight’ in the busy pre-Christmas season. Tickets for the two shows at 11am and 7pm are available from Ticketek NZ. Jessica Jones Photography.

The reindeeer showed up in Liz Davidson Park overnight, to help bring in some more Christmas cheer.

By Cathie Bell Blenheim resident Frank Metcalfe’s first novel was launched last night at the DudsonScott Gallery near Renwick, a fitting place for a novel about an artist. The book, called ‘The Painter’, tells a story in New Zealand and Scotland. Frank says people in his family ‘tend to write’ and he has been considering the story in his mind for many years. “This has been an idea in my head for some time, about a missing artist… Bit by bit, it’s taken shape.” He and wife Di McCarthy did a big trip to Scotland a few years ago, and ‘some of the story dropped into place’, he says. It’s not a hard-hitting story, Frank says, but more of ‘a nice story’. “There’s nothing nasty about it, there is a positive mystery, nice things happen.” He says people who have read it have enjoyed it. Writing it was hard, with Frank busy with other things and running in to plot roadblocks. “Bit by bit, I got there.” Having said that, he’s not ruling out writing a sequel, to find out what happened next. “That’s an idea that floats around my head, I don’t know. It took a while to get to this one.” The book took two years to write and has been self-published. It is available at the Dudson-Scott Gallery, the Millennium Gallery and PaperPlus in Blenheim.

Medals and memories Seven young riders from Marlborough Riding for Disabled returned triumphant from the Special Olympic National Summer Games in Wellington with a haul of 16 medals and incredible memories. The team were only in Wellington for the opening and closing ceremonies because the equestrian event, run by Roslein Wilkes from Marlborough Riding for Disabled, was held at the world class equestrian park, Manfield, in Palmerston North. “When the team arrived at the venue on the Tuesday, the afternoon was spent horse matching as no athletes take their own horses,” coach/manager Helena van Velthooven says. “Riders are matched with a horse that appears suitable and are allowed 15 minutes to have a ride and gauge if the horse will be suitable.” On Wednesday morning the riders were split into the suitable division within their grade to ensure they were competing against riders of a very similar skill level.

Then it was straight into the dressage event. “All our riders showed off their training and determination with beautifully presented dressage tests,” Helena says. “Karl Millian, 14, riding Enzo was the standout of the Marlborough riders, winning gold with the highest score of the dressage at the competition.” Day two saw riders compete in both working trail and equitation. “The working trail is a fun event that is a huge test for the rider’s control, co-

ordination and memory,” Helena says. Our riders were outstanding, the displayed great skill and horsemanship and achieved amazing results. “Standout performers were Alan Fuge, 15, and Talia Leach-Jones, 16, who won silver and bronze respectively.” Following the trail the athletes went into their final event- Equitation. “Equitation is purely an event to demonstrate riding ability, skill and control of

the horse,” Helena says. “Our team of riders excelled in this event, taking five gold medals. “They were fully prepared by their coach Angela Fergusson, and Clinton Whyte and Sophie Bashford also came and were a great help with the riders, particularly when the coaches were bus,” Helena says. “It was a team effort from the RDA family and the riders all conducted themselves with great sportsmanship and pride.”

Yacht series down to the final race By Cathie Bell It came down to the final race to determine who would take the series win in division one of the Marlborough Sounds Marinas Spring Twilight Series raced last Tuesday. With Satellite Spy remaining in Wellington to contest the Cook Strait Classic, the 11 division one yachts gave the committee boat crew a fast and furious few minutes, with the first 10 yachts finishing in close procession. Drinks Trolley (Tom Hutchinson) managed to edge ahead of Khamsin (Dave Kelway) by two seconds closely followed by Midnight (Chris Webb), Global (David Grigg), Flying Fox (Chris Williams) and Bluebird

(Bob Crum) coming in sixth. Over the next two divisions, racing was just as close, with Bavaria (Ralph Rosthorn) taking the race over Rapport (Andrew Wilson) in division two and Bandit (David Morgan) over Blaze Away (Trevor Purver) in division three. Waikawa Boating Club spokesman Brad Goode says it took three months, with 52 yachts over 10 races to sort out the series victors. With such close racing, it is no surprise that the series winners in division one Khamsin (Dave Kelway), only scraped through by two points over Satellite Spy (Matt Kerr), with High Voltage (Jeremy Turnbull) a very respectable third, he says.

The division two winner by an impressive 10 points over second place Joint Effort (Bill Crossen) was Slingshot (Clive Ballett) with consistent wins, and high place finishes over the series. Blaze Away (Trevor Purver) held onto their first place with an impressive 13 point win in division three, over Entertainer (Mark Altoft). Brad says the club congratulates to all who took part in this fantastic event. “We had extremely tight racing and everyone enjoyed themselves. We would like to acknowledge the continued support of Marlborough Sounds Marinas in helping us host this series.”
