By Cathie Bell It’s almost Christmas time, and churches around Marlborough are gearing up to celebrate the birth of Jesus. For many parishes, younger members are getting ready to mark the season with special family services. Religious services prepared for Christmas Continued from Page 1 Christmas is one of the most important festivals in the Christian calendar, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Star of the Sea Catholic parish priest Father John Pearce is celebrating his first Christmas in Marlborough, and says he is looking forward to it.

The parish will have three priests saying Christmas Masses in five locations, stretching from Picton and Havelock, down to Kaikoura. Father John says with Christmas over an extended weekend this year, it is a good chance for people travelling to get together without a rush to celebrate life, hope, and faith with family all together.

“We give thanks to those who are with us at the table.” Elim church senior pastor Tom Hatch says his church is ‘pooling its resources’ with lots of the regular serving team away, and is not having a Sunday service, focusing on a morning service on Christmas Day instead. The service, which starts at 9am,

has a ‘Joy to the World’ theme, he says. “It’s very traditional, the theme this year.” There are a large number of Christmas services on around Marlborough this weekend. A selection are advertised with The Sun on Page 22 in this issue.

TWICE WEEKLY

By Bill McElhinney We have a winner! The Sun, in conjunction with BP Computers, has been celebrating 15 years by giving readers the opportunity to win a Lenovo laptop package worth $2000. There were over 700 entries, and yesterday Blenheim man Jim Thomas had his entry pulled from the pile. Jim is thrilled with his win. “I’ve had the same old desktop computer since I left the BNZ 17 years ago,” Jim says. “I’ll have fun with this!” “This is a very good laptop,” Brendon Price from BP Computers says. “The Lenovo is a machine that we really recommend as it is so reliable. “We have installed an office and anti-virus package and the latest

upgrades. “We’ll configure it to suit Jim’s requirements.” Jim has been a Lions Club member for 38 years and has been involved in numerous fundraising and community events. He has also volunteered as a Victim Support person at the Blenheim Police Station. You could say Jim has had a bit of a lucky streak. “I won a $500 voucher in a raffle recently,” he says. “And a few years ago I won a car and also a Rugby World Cup trip in conjunction with my brother. But I do enter things.” Congratulations to Jim from all of us at The Sun, and thanks to Brendon and everyone who entered the competition.

Fantastic Tree Festival

By Bill McElhinney A dazzling display of brightly-lit Christmas trees is now on display at the Renwick Anglican Church hall. “This year is the third year we have run the Christmas Tree Festival in Renwick and it’s fast becoming a popular attraction,” Wairau Anglican Church vicar Joe Keighley says. “As with past years, businesses and community groups have joined in by decorating their own Christmas tree for the 12 days leading up to Christmas. “A number of new businesses are involved this year, bringing their own unique touch of Christmas and providing something new for those who have visited in past years,” Joe says. “Last year’s festival drew over 800 people from throughout Marlborough, with many coming back again with other family and friends. “We also had various community groups organise trips to visit the festival including Alzheimer’s Forget Me Not, who enjoyed it so

Tractor death A 30-year-old man from Marlborough has died after the tractor he was driving crashed at Onamalutu, police say. Enquiries will be made into the cause of the crash on Northbank Road near Wairau River, which Police were alerted to after 8pm on Saturday, and the death has been referred to the Coroner.

much they immediately started thinking about ideas for including their own tree in this year’s festival.” The display opened on Wednesday and will be open for the public every day from 11am to 10pm. Group bookings are also

available earlier in the mornings by arrangement. The trees are lit and look really spectacular at night when the lights are off. The Christmas morning service held among the trees attracted about 100 people.

“There is no cost in attending the festival, though visitors are given the opportunity to support Tear Fund’s aid and support work throughout the world. “It’s a timely reminder of those in need in our own communities and in other countries.”

Testing of samples from four of Blenheim’s water supply bores that supply the town’s 25,000 residents have shown no contaminants from firefighting foam used at Base Woodbourne, the Marlborough District Council says. Council maintenance and operations engineer Stephen Rooney says testing of private water sources on some properties neighbouring the base is continuing. The council and district health board moved promptly last week to ensure the Blenheim town supply was tested as quickly as possible, in light of the announcement that the New Zealand Defence Force had found levels of soil and water contamination at Woodbourne air base from the historic use of firefighting foam.

Women’s Refuge Marlborough manager Helen Lyons collected donated Christmas gifts yesterday from the Sun office. Sun readers have been incredibly generous by donating food items for the Sun’s annual Christmas Appeal, including some who brought in gifts for adults and children. The Sun opted to donate these to the Women’s Refuge which were gratefully received. “This week we will be distributing gifts to the families we are supporting, as well as gift packs that have been donated by local clubs and organisations. Thank you to those who donated these gifts,” Helen says. The final day was Monday so thank you to everyone who made a donation. Photo by Celeste Alexander

Homecare woes pile up By Cathie Bell Other people are coming forward with problems with the new homecare contracts. The Sun wrote about concerns from community advocate Jean Wilson, who told the Marlborough Primary Health Organisation’s monthly meeting that she was fielding complaints from people around the district about the drop in service after new companies took over. At the time, the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and the new providers said clients wouldn’t notice any change. But clients say there have been big changes. Dawn Langdon, from Picton, says her mother and mother’s partner have been missed and instructions on their care have not been passed on as there is no consistency in carers. When the carer visits, they are in a rush and don’t have the time to spend with her mother to talk her into taking a shower or her medication, she says. “I’m frustrated.” Mary Hickman, from Springlands, says she and her husband Ossie don’t get notifications of changes and have had visits missed. Their usual caregiver went on leave, but they have not had notifications of a replacement, and when Mary rang to find out what was happening, she was told they didn’t plan that far ahead. She has written to the company to complain as well as ringing them. “The people doing the job are fabulous, but it’s the administration.” Catherine Donnelley from Age Concern Marlborough says the organisation had a flurry of calls initially but none lately, which seemed to indicate teething problems are being resolved. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board service manager needs assessment service Simone Newsham says NMH has received a small number of formal complaints, which have been handled on a case by case basis. Most of them are from at least one month ago that have since been resolved, she says. Continued on page 10

Students get study boost By Cathie Bell Seven young people have won tertiary study scholarships for their university courses. The seven were awarded the scholarships by Marlborough Lines at a ceremony in Blenheim last Friday. They are: Jude Kalan and M it c h el l D a u b n ey f r o m Marlborough Boys’ College; Isabel Cowlishaw and Emma Gardiner from Marlborough Girls’ College; Ashish Yadav and Maxwell Thompson from Queen Charlotte College; and Olivia Partridge from Rai Valley Area School. Jude is to study engineering at Canterbury University. Mitchell is to study for a commerce degree. Isabel is going to study engineering in Auckland University. Ashish is to study health science at Otago University. Maxwell is to study English and commerce at Victoria University

in Wellington. Olivia is to study dentistry at Otago University. Emma is also to study engineering at Canterbury. Marlborough Lines general manager contracting Stephen McLauchlan says the lines company has awarded scholarships for tertiary study since 1991. “We’ve done it since then when the board of directors noticed there was nothing out there to reward people doing well towards their tertiary studies. This award was put together to do that.” About 226 people have benefited from the awards in that time, he says, and ‘some outstanding people’ have come through. “With this group today, young intelligent-looking people, some of you will be making incredible contributions too.” The students’ schools select the students to receive the company’s awards, Stephen says.

Dave Baker, John Jackson and Helen Neighbour-Cone with the wooden clinker dinghy presented to John.

Prize for marine radio volunteer By Celeste Alexander A beautifully-made wooden clinker dinghy model was presented to a man who has supported the Marlborough Marine Radio (MMR) since its inception. John Jackson was the lucky recipient thanks to a competition that was being run by the MMR as an incentive for its members to pay their fees on time. He is also a MMR volunteer, a launch owner and Waikawa Boat Club member. The dinghy was made by local boat builder and artist Brett Baxter, one of the artists who sell his work at the Karaka Wood Gallery in Picton. Owners Richard Neighbour and Helen

Neighbour-Cone were proud to supply the prize, especially as Richard is on the MMR’s executive committee so their support is ongoing. Presenting the prize to John was Dave Baker, patron of the MMR and past president and whose family were instrumental in raising awareness of the service in the Queen Charlotte Sound and Picton side from the late 1960s. Today, the MMR has seven operators and 1650 members, almost all of which are volunteers, Dave says. “It’s a top service and we are always looking for volunteers so if you’re intersted, please make contact.”

Yes, I am. I’m looking forward to stopping work and spending time with family.

I’m done. There are just a few things to wrap, apart from that, it’s sorted.

I hope so, I think so.

Almost, almost. I’ve got three more presents to get.

Yes, it’s a lot less this year. I’m buying less, doing less. It’s more about family and good deeds.

Norm Fowke Glass Butter rort Dear Ed Can someone explain the illogic of current high retail prices for butter (about $7) when the dairy price market is so volatile and depressed and farmers are getting low returns. It all goes to show the fallacy of the free market and the fairy tale around good prices to the consumer. Pity the dairy farmers who have to try and operate under the free market rout. Hospital amazing Dear Ed, I’m writing is to express my utmost gratitude to all the staff of your great hospital. My wife and I are from Pauanui on the Coromandel Peninsula and were traveling through Blenheim when I had a heart scare. The receptionist, triage nurse and doctors were just amazing. I felt completely at ease with their explanations and treatment and think the personal touch in a smaller facility

is something special. As a community you should be grateful for their efforts and do all you can to make sure it continues. I now need to add, that we had to return to the hospital for an overnight stay, and was treated as superbly again. Particularly the doctor who sourced all previous info from Waikato . Thank you Blenheim hospital again. John Mckenzie Pauanui

Dear Ed, NZ Post just set a fast post record in my little corner of the world. A fast post letter from Hamilton took 17 days to reach Blenheim. But fast post will be no more in 2018 when the ‘managers’ scrap it. It makes me the consumer and taxpayer wonder what’s going on. NZ Post seems to be winding down. Yet at Blenheim post centre, new alterations to the post office box lobby and presumably a new post shop going in, are indications there’s still a flicker of life. So too are the new zoom machines on residential delivery replacing the good old pedalling postie, a move I’m not sure why? What’s the cost of the change? But then the other Tuesday at my post office box at 7.18am I peeked

Simon Heath Blenheim Yes, I’m ready for Christmas, all the shopping is done.

through into the mail sorting room and it was in darkness. Zilch activity when at 7.18am surely mail should be sorted? Is mail sorting scaled back and only done a few days of the week? Well please don’t take any grumbles you may have out on the staff. They are very good. The problem lies with the Douglas/ Prebble Horrible twins making the postal service a SOE rather than a public service and in current faceless bungling bureaucrats “managing” at the top of NZ Post. Stamped or Stumped? Blenheim Editor’s note: Mail is not sorted in Blenheim anymore, it’s done in Christchurch. The retail store is being prepared for Cycleworld, as reported in The Sun earlier this month.

Water saving Dear Ed, Conserve water (and I’m not joking). Have you heard the joke about the driver whose car was low on petrol? He drove faster to get to the next garage before he ran out! If the Marlborough District Council asks us to conserve water to avoid restrictions we obey, don’t we? Some people in Christchurch were asked to save water but used even more! I hope we have more sense and not like the driver who was low on fuel. Evan Robinson Redwoodtown

Molesworth cruelty Dear Ed, The revelation that OSPRI and DOC operating in collusion to drop 1080 poison on Molesworth which incidentally is public land, have poisoned at least 350 deer at the end of November shows a cold blooded attitude by the DOC bureaucrats. DOC well knows red deer adult females (hinds) give birth to fawns at the end of November. The effect of 1080 on the poisoned animal is horrific. One witness wrote of possums poisoned and dying over a six to 18 hour period thus as?” Lethally dosed possums exhibited spasms involving the limbs or body. Possums vocalised during spasms, tremors or seizures. Vocalisation was loud and prolonged. Squeaking, gasping and gagging noises were also frequently heard during retching and terminal breathing. Seizures included stiffening of limbs with hunching of the shoulders; jerks in limbs, head, abdomen or shoulder; leg paddling; rolling onto the back with a stiffened body; continuous body rolling; trembling; and rigidity of the entire body. Possums were sometimes propelled into the air by these movements…” But worse still once the adult hind is killed, its fawn, just days old, will die slowly and cruelly from starvation. Shame on you DOC and OSPRI. 1080 is not a humane way to kill any animal. Death is painful, torturous and slow. Der Bingle Blenheim

Lions raise funds for diabetes research By Bill McElhinney Lions Clubs around New Zealand are supporting New Zealand Spinal Cord Society in an important medical research trial that will test a cure for Type 1 Diabetes, here in New Zealand. The Lions Club members are raising money to buy clinical equipment and help to set up and commission the stem cell production facility needed for the cure research. Type 1 Diabetes is a life-threatening auto-immune disease where the body’s own immune system attacks and destroys insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Lions in Blenheim and Havelock have been

Blenheim-based scientist Elizabeth Bell, far left, with Forest and Bird’s Karen Baird and visiting scientists Yu-Min Yeh, Julia Hsiangwen Huang, and Prawira Atmaja Tampubolon.

Scientists learn bird study By Cathie Bell Three scientists from Taiwan and Indonesia are in Blenheim to learn how scientists here study the seabirds caught accidentally by fishing boats. The national Conservation Services Programme managed by the Department of Conservation bycatch monitoring programme is done by Wildlife Management International Ltd, and the birds are measured and dissected to see how big they are, what injuries they have, what they’ve been eating and samples taken for genetic and other tests. Wildlife Management International’s chief biologist Elizabeth Bell says New Zealand is sharing its systems with other countries looking at setting up or improving their own fisheries monitoring. Prawira Atmaja Tampubolon, from the Research Institute for Tuna Fisheries in Indonesia, says his institute is looking at setting up a programme looking at the bird bycatch. Julia Hsiangwen Huang from the National

Taiwan Ocean University, says her country has an observer programme on fishing boats, but she is looking at ways of obtaining more information on seabird species and possibilities for more research. The Taiwanese programme photographs the birds caught at sea but she hopes to talk with Taiwanese authorities about bringing the birds’ bodies back for further study as happens in New Zealand. Yu Min Yeh, visiting from Nanhua University in Taiwan, says the key aim of her visit is to learn seabird identification skills to apply in her own country’s observer programme. Elizabeth says scientists find the birds’ bodies provides ‘so much’ information, not just on fisheries management, but about the birds’ genetics, plastics impact on sea life, and other things. “Although it is unfortunate that the birds have been caught on fishing vessels, getting the birds returned becomes pretty important as we can learn so much from them”

Banter with Santa

Santa was invited along to the Sun’s annual Christmas drinks and nibbles last Saturday. It’s an annual tradition for Santa to visit and share his thoughts about the region, and what he has instore for Christmas Eve. He sat to chat with reporter Celeste Alexander over a glass of Marlborough riesling before returning to the North Pole.

Santa replied to the Sun’s invitation saying he would arrive at around 5pm. There were drinks and nibbles laid out in a gorgeous, riverside setting. The spot had been chosen particularly for the reindeer which every year had the hard task of landing in Blenheim’s CBD without being noticed. The staff waited in anticipation, a glass of wine clutched nervously in their hands as they listened out for the jingling of bells overhead. Instead, the growl of a jet boat engine filled the air and from a distance Santa’s huge red frame could be seen in the cockpit beside John Derry as they powered up the river. As Santa clambered out of his seat he looked a little shook up with his beard still stuck out behind him and hair messed

about his face. “Phew... haha,” Santa puffs nervously as he tries to regain his composure after stumbling up the bank. “Strewth that thing’s fast John.” As John heads off, Santa shakily accepts a whiskey from Les Whiteside who still hasn’t stopped laughing. “Come on Santa, come and have some lunch with us,” Les says as he offers up a chair. “I thought it would be faster by water since the roads are crazy busy between here and Christchurch. State Highway One is bumper to bumper with traffic and I didn’t want to spook the reindeer,” Santa says. “I did enjoy my steam train ride from Picton though... I did get a few funny looks as I had my two elf minders with me,”

he chuckles. Les indicates towards a bundle of Sun newspapers. “We’ve officially finished for Christmas and are closing the office next week Santa, but before we do I’m interested to know what was your favourite story of the year?” “Stories you mean! “There’s been a lot of goodwill shown towards one another with the earthquake recovery, fundraising for charities and hardship that people have been through. “I can honestly say that Marlborough is one of the most generous regions in the country. “I do have to mention the stellar effort put in for the Fight for Life charity boxing match. In fact it’s inspired a similar thing back at the North Pole... I’ve now got elves hitting the weights and walking around like they’re

Arnold Schwarzenegger.” “On another note I’m going to miss the hot chips at the Manhattan Café but I hear the donuts are pretty tempting. If the owner makes a candy cane version I’ll be there with bells on,” Santa grins. After an hour of eating, laughing and clinking of glasses, Santa makes one final toast. “I’d like to toast to the memory of my all-time favourite sales rep... Jill Fraser! I miss her cheerful smile and witty banter. How she got me to advertise I will never know, as I don’t have anything to sell or offer,” he laughs. With a heave and a grunt Santa pushes himself out of the chair and on to his feet. “Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas and keep up the good work Sun team. “I will be back Christmas Eve.”

Adele and Kellie Leask and Lisa Herkt with the 55 inch TV Adele won.

Early Christmas for Adele By Bill McElhinney Blenheim woman Adele Leask thought someone was pulling her leg when she got a phone call to say she had won a new TV. “I didn’t really believe it,” Adele says. “But then I checked the results of the competition I had entered and saw it was me!” Adele was the lucky winner of a Panasonic 55 inch Smart TV, valued at $2599, in an on-line competition run nation-wide by the 100% Appliance Stores.

“There were 3000-4000 entries,” Lisa Herkt, from Herkt Appliances, says. “We were really stoked when someone from Blenheim won!” Adele and her children, Kellie and Hunter, were looking forward to their new TV. “The new smart TVs are so good – the picture is so clear you think the people are real, and you can connect them to the internet for things like Netflix.”

Catch a tagged rainbow and win! By Bill McElhinney Two hundred tagged rainbow trout have been released into Lake Argyle and the lower hydro canal, but only one will win a lucky angler a $500 Henderson’s Fishing Store voucher. The release has been timed for the holiday season to encourage families to head to Lake Argyle and have a go at trout fishing, Nelson / Marlborough Fish & Game manager Rhys Barrier says. “This special release will inject some real fun and suspense into a day out fishing as excited family members look to see if every fish they catch has a tag that could make them a winner. “All 200 rainbows are sporting visible orange or pink tags, but only Fish & Game staff know the number on the fish that will win the voucher.” There will also be additional winners as anyone who catches other specifically nominated fish will win a free fishing licence for the 2018-19 season.

There are no entry fees or forms to fill out but anglers must have a current fishing licence, Rhys says. An angler who catches a tagged fish needs to simply call or email Fish & Game with their tag number (and preferably a photo of the tagged fish) to see if they’ve bagged the winning fish. “Lake Argyle itself is a terrific trout fishery, with a very good population of brown and rainbow trout, but the lower canal below the powerhouse has a relatively low population of fish due to the powerhouse blocking fish movement,” Rhys says. “This release will significantly boost the population in the lower canal and we strongly encourage anglers, new or otherwise, to have a go at them.” Lake Argyle is located in the Wairau Valley about 50 minutes drive from Blenheim. The bag limit for Lake Argyle and the lower canal is two fish per day, and trout can be targeted with fly or spin rods, and bait fishing is permitted.

DHB and providers reassure on homecare delivery The District Health Board and homecare providers say problems with homecare provision in Marlborough are teething problems that have largely been sorted out now. Nurse Maude chief executive Jim Magee says the change from five providers to two had been complex, but the ‘tricky time’ was really over. “Inevitably there were issues… there was some disruption and it’s always unsettling for clients. We recognise that.” However, things have settled down now, he says. “Last week, out of nearly 5000 visits in the course of the week, four were reported as missed visits.” Jim says if people have concerns, he encourages them to ring and to make contact with him. “Our objective is that if anything is a problem, we respond quickly and put it right.” Access chief executive Simon Lipscombe says Access is very proud to have the opportunity to provide home and community support services across the Nelson Marlborough region. “We take this responsibility very seriously, and if there are issues raised with our services we resolve these with urgency. “ Simon says the company delivers more than 99 per cent of visits as scheduled, and any missed visits are not acceptable. “We work closely with Nelson Marlborough DHB on the delivery of our services, and meet with them regularly to discuss our service provision and plans for continual improvement. “Anyone who has concerns about the

service they are getting from Access should get in touch with us directly so that we can help them.” Nelson Marlborough District Health Board service manager needs assessment service Simone Newsham says NMH has received a small number of formal complaints, which have been handled on a case by case basis. Most of them are from at least one month ago that have since been resolved, she says. “The most recent information we have from both Access Community Health and Nurse Maude show that more than 99.8 per cent of visits were provided in the past three weeks. “When complaints are received or issues arise, we contact the provider directly and have clear expectations that all complaints or issues are investigated with urgency. “We meet with the agencies every two weeks and the subject of how they are responding to client calls and enquiries is always on the agenda. “Under our contract we require quarterly reports, monthly reports about missed visits and phone calls, and currently we ask for additional weekly reporting about missed visits and phone calls so we can monitor this. “We expect all interruptions to normal business to be reported to us immediately.” • Are you having problems with your homecare visits? Let us know on news@blenheimsun.co.nz and contact the DHB’s Hayley McElwain to register complaints on Hayley.McElwain@ nmdhb.govt.nz or 03 5461800 ext 7366.

Travel carefully By Cathie Bell Marlborough’s state highways will be among the busiest roads as holiday makers travel this Christmas and New Year, so the message from NZ Police and the NZ Transport Agency to road users this year is simple – drive safely, we want you here for Christmas. • Plan ahead. Get your vehicle checked before you head out, plan to avoid peak traffic where you can and give yourself enough time to take plenty of rest or sightseeing breaks along the way. • Drive to the conditions. This isn’t just about weather conditions - it’s about the road you’re on, the traffic, your vehicle and load, your speed, your following distance, and adjusting your driving for wet and windy conditions. • Watch out for fatigue. Long trips are tiring and fatigue can be deadly behind the wheel. Get a good night’s sleep beforehand, plan in advance where you’ll take breaks along the

way, and be aware of any medication you’re taking that might affect your driving. • Keep your cool. Holiday driving can be frustrating with busy roads, stifling heat and restless kids in the car. So please, be courteous and patient while on the roads. Don’t get provoked by other drivers’ aggressive behaviour, and wait to overtake until you get to a passing lane or can see enough clear road ahead of you to do it safely. • Buckle up. If you’re the driver, you are legally responsible for making sure all passengers under the age of 15 are securely restrained with either a safety belt or child restraint. Children must be properly restrained by an approved child restraint until their seventh birthday. • Don’t drink and drive. The alcohol limit for adult drivers is now lower, and your judgement and reaction times begin to deteriorate after even one drink. Keep it simple – if you’re going to drink, don’t drive.

“Fish where the fish are. Target where the correct audience is. Give yourself the best chance and whatever you do, don’t get sucked into a deal with a particular media because it is cheap. If it isn’t hitting your correct audience you are wasting your money.” - Henry Ford

Coleen and friends enjoy cards and good company By Bill McElhinney “My cake mixer’s died and so has my dishwasher and vacuum cleaner – I’ve outlived my appliances,” sprightly 90-year-old Coleen Steedman says. Coleen had two 90th birthday parties: one in Waiwera, north of Auckland where her daughter and son-in-law invited about 65 friends and family to celebrate with Coleen. Coleen’s actual birthday was December 6, and on December 9 she had another party, this one for Blenheim friends. “It was marvellous,” friend Margaret Hamilton says.

“Coleen did all the catering herself and we had dips and nibbles, ham and beautifully cooked chicken, salads, new potatoes, pavlova, trifle and sticky date pudding with caramel sauce. “Coleen invited three of her friends from the Blenheim Golf Club, three from the Blenheim Bowls Club and friends from the Pams Opportunity Shop, where she has been a volunteer.” “Well I did work for a catering firm for four or five years,” Coleen says. She was a keen golfer up until about four years ago when she fell and injured her spine. “I do miss it,” Coleen says. But she

still manages to play bowls and keep her garden looking lovely. Coleen and three good friends get together every two weeks to play cards at each other’s homes and take turns at providing afternoon tea. “Biscuits and crackers,” Margaret Ogier with a grin says. “I don’t think so,” the other member of the cards team, Shirley Godsiff, says. “Coleen’s a lovely lady and a lovely friend,” Margaret Hamilton says. “We were so glad to be part of her birthday celebrations!”

By Bill McElhinney Meredith Marsone always wanted to paint people. “There are two reasons I paint people; it’s the best way I know to communicate the human experience, and I love the challenge of rendering faces, eyes, skin, and hands. It’s very satisfying,” Meredith says. Meredith moved to Blenheim from Christchurch with her husband, Carsten, and their three daughters in January and has set up a studio in their Hutcheson Street home. “I’ve been painting full time since 2007,” Meredith says. “I paint most days.” Meredith went to art school and

graduated with a degree in painting, but was frustrated with her early efforts. “Starting out was endless frustration and failure,” Meredith says. “But over the years I developed my own style. Eventually something clicked and I didn’t have to try so hard.” Meredith describes herself as a contemporary artist working in oils. Her subject matter centres on figures as they move through a range of human experiences. “My paintings are not portraits in that they are not usually paintings of a specific person,” Meredith says. “They are more paintings of a figure that can communicate the message I

intend for the piece. “I try to convey the complexity of what it is to be human.” Meredith sells most of her work overseas, and had a particularly successful show in Los Angeles earlier this year and an exhibition in Sydney in May. Next year she will stage an exhibition of her works in the Blenheim Millennium Gallery. In the meantime she is working on a life-sized portrait of her daughter “which is a lot of work.” Some of Meredith’s works are currently on display in the Figures exhibition at the Yealands Gallery in High Street.

Be sunsmart this summer Heading to the beach or river over the Christmas holidays? Have fun, but remember to protect your skin from sunburn and insect bites. Sunburn is a burn to the skin caused by excess exposure to ultra violet (UV) radiation in the sun. It can also be caused by other sources of UV, such as sun beds. Sunburn should be avoided as much as possible, as even mild sunburn can damage your skin and increase your risk of skin cancer. Facts about UV radiation in New Zealand - You can feel the sun’s heat but you cannot feel UV radiation, which is why it can

still harm your skin on cool, cloudy days. - UV radiation levels are at their peak in NZ from September to April, especially between 10am and 4pm. - However, UV radiation levels can also be high when you are at high altitudes or around snow or ice. - Even mild sunburn can damage your skin and increase your risk of skin cancer. - You can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer by being SunSmart and covering up with clothing, a broad-spectrum sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. - Remember to SLIP, SLOP, SLAP and WRAP.

Healthline, Pharmacists, GP or GP Practice Nurse, and Urgent After Hours GP offer professional health advice. If you arrive at Wairau Hospital’s Emergency Department with a non-urgent health concern you may be referred to your GP.

We know, you didn’t mean to get sunburned. You lost track of time, or nodded off, and now you can tell you’re going to be lobster-red and miserable. It can take several hours for the full damage to show itself. So at the first sign, get out of the sun and follow this expert advice. 1. Act fast to cool it down If you’re near a cold pool, lake or ocean, take a quick dip to cool your skin, but only for a few seconds so you don’t prolong your exposure. Then cover up and get out of the sun immediately. Continue to cool the burn with cold compresses. You can use ice to make ice water for a cold compress, but don’t apply ice directly to the sunburn. Or take a cool shower or bath, but not for too long, which can be drying, and avoid harsh soap, which might irritate the skin even more. 2. Moisturise while the skin is damp While skin is still damp, use a gentle moisturising lotion or after-burn lotion (but not petroleum or oil-based ointments, which may trap the heat and make the burn worse). Repeat to keep burned or peeling skin moist over the next few days.

3. Decrease the inflammation At the first sign of sunburn, taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen which can help with discomfort and inflammation. Aloe vera may also soothe mild burns and is generally considered safe. Wear loose, soft, breathable clothing to avoid further skin irritation, and stay out of the sun. 4. Replenish your fluids Burns draw fluid to the skin’s surface and away from the rest of the body, so you may become dehydrated. It’s important to rehydrate by drinking extra liquids, including water and sports drinks that help to replenish electrolytes, immediately and while your skin heals. 5. See a doctor if… You should seek medical help if you or a child has severe blistering over a large portion of the body, has a fever and chills, or is woozy or confused. Don’t scratch or pop blisters, which can lead to infection. Signs of infection include red streaks or oozing pus. Bottom line: Your skin will heal, but real damage has been done. ‘Repeat sunburns put you at a substantial risk for skin cancer and premature skin aging.

Junior Lions earn college cash donation Earlier this month, members of the Marlborough Boys’ College Leo Club, which is the youth arm of the Lions Club International organisation, joined with fellow members of the Girls’ College and Rai Valley School Leo clubs to recognise the Club’s 10th anniversary. Formed in 2007, under their current leaders Lindsay Moir and Malcolm Williams, the MBC Leos presented College principal Wayne Hegarty with a donation of $500 towards facilities at the college. During the past 10 years, the MBC Leo club have made significant contributions to both the College and

the Blenheim community especially as a result of monies raised from the sausage sizzles, Malcolm says. Two highlights during the existence of the Club were that two members, Liam Stoneley and Jarrod Silcock were awarded International ‘Leo of the Year’ recognitions for their contributions to both the College and the community, he says. When these awards were announced, they were two of 16 other awardees outside of the United States during their respective years. Leo Clubs cater for college-aged students aged between 12 and 18 years of age. Lions and Leo Club members.

Athletics day successful event By Cathie Bell The Marlborough Children’s Athletics Club held a successful Ribbon Day at Athletic Park last Sunday. Spokeswoman Tracey Sims says a total of 80 entries were received, including 55 from Marlborough, with the remaining coming from Richmond, Motueka and Nelson. In addition to each child receiving a participation ribbon, additional ribbons were also presented for first, second and third places in each event. The Ribbon Day was a club fundraiser but also gave Marlborough children the opportunity to compete against other Tasman clubs, many for the first time as all

Interclub competitions are held at Saxton Field, she says “It also took the pressure off visiting clubs, enabling them to enjoy the day without having to do any organising” Tracey says feedback on the day has been positive and well received. “It’s likely that a similar event will be held again next season.” Membership numbers have increased this season, Tracey says, and Marlborough children have already enjoyed success recently, winning the mini multi for a third consecutive year. Next month, a team of 25 will travel to the South Island Colgate Games which will be held in Timaru between January 12 and 14.

Final meet for 2017 By Celeste Alexander Eastern States Speedway held its final race meeting for the year before taking a break for Christmas, and who better to kick it all off than Santa himself. The big man in red threw lollies out to the crowd while perched on the back of a streetstock. A kids bicycle race was then held before racing commenced. Some of the highlight races included the streetstocks which had a field of 12, including visiting drivers from Greymouth, Christchurch and Nelson. Super saloons put on a great show, including one visiting from Wellington who wanted to test out the track conditions ahead of the NZ Saloon Grand Prix on January 9. Doug Smith of Christchurch, who is highly experienced with track preparation, helped out on the night which made for a great night’s racing for the super saloons. The only real crash and bang was in the ministocks class, but due to strict safety regulations there were no injuries. The next race meeting will be in the New Year, January 9 where saloons from all over the country will converge in Blenheim for the Grand Prix title.

Halberg nominations Mixed martial arts champion Gase Sanita and rower Robbie Manson have been nominated for Halberg Awards. There have been 71 nominations from 27 sports received for six categories of awards, organisers say. Named after Olympic champion Sir Murray Halberg (ONZ), the Halberg Awards is the country’s pre-eminent event to honour and celebrate New Zealand sporting excellence.

Name corrected The Tasman Rugby Union is proud to announce a correction to its team name to Tasman Mako. The dropping of the letter ‘s’ from the previous brand is in respectful acknowledgement of the correct use of the Maori name for the magnificent taonga, the Mako, that is the emblem. The change has the full support of TRU stakeholders – the Board, staff, Mako players including recent Maori All Blacks, team management, major sponsors and the eight iwi of Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka-a-Maui.

bounded by Spring Creek,” club treasurer Barry Doig says. “The tournament has been a gathering point for many families who come together in Marlborough over the holiday period,” Barry says.”Most members of these families play tennis. “The early tournaments finished with a fun evening with a live band on the back of a truck and dancing under the stars well into the night. We anticipate there will be music, dancing and celebrating for this 40th anniversary tournament.

“And we’ll have some formalities on the Saturday with an anniversary cake which will be cut by club patrons Ewen Robinson and Ian Gifford, whose families were founding members of the club,” Barry says. “For this tournament a social mixed doubles is being added on the Friday and players of all standards are welcome to take part in this.” Past winners of the men’s doubles include Graham Thomas, who won the first tournament playing with Barry Pickering. Graham has gone on to win the tournament 13 times,

and been runner-up three times. The first women’s doubles was won by Debbie Looms and Claire Molyneux. Jane Anderson-Bay has won the tournament on 21 occasions, 11 of those with Debra Schollum as her partner. Jane has also been runner-up nine times, and Jane and Debra will team up again for this anniversary tournament. You don’t have to be an affiliated tennis club member to take part, Barry says, anyone can join in. Entry forms are available on line and entries close on December 24.
