Art by Robert Warren and Walter Scott InTandem is an exhibition of the work of two talented Marlborough artists. Walter Scott built his early passion in visual arts into a career in photography, before adopting pastels as a favoured art medium. He now works in both pastel and oils. The late Robert (Bob) Warren’s early study at Canterbury College School of Art in the 1930’s was curtailed by World War II, and his love of oil painting was not fully realised until his retirement and in his more senior years.

Lifejackets essential wear
The annual Hopai Sports Day is a great day for all ages. Lamirana Photography.
Family day out in the Pelorus Sound By Celeste Alexander Since 1920 locals have been enjoying the annual Hopai Sports Day, an event that has become very much an annual tradition for families. This year the Hopai Sports Day will be held on Saturday, January 6 and promises a day filled with fun for all ages to enjoy. While the traditional method of transport to the sports is by boat, there is now road access via Kenepuru Road and Crail Bay. From Crail Bay there will be signs put up for people to follow. Take along a picnic lunch, the swim suits, deck chairs, sunshade, suntan lotion and get ready to participate or just be a spectator. Just in case the weather changes,
bring along some warm clothes as well. If joining in the races isn’t what you want to do, just come along and cheer everyone else on. The Hopai committee run a small shop for the essential sweets, cold drinks and ice-creams, and there will be stalls, a sausage sizzle and raffles on the day. A small entry fee is charged and the profits from the day are given away to local charities each year. Admission is $5 per person and children 12 years and under go free. Please take cash as there will not be eftpos available. Two big events on the day are the hotly contested Hopai He Man race, which is open to women, men and teams, comprising of a
swim and a long hill run, and the tug-of-war. Teams have come back repeatedly to defend their titles from the previous year, and sometimes years. Children’s races include the tree-legged race, egg and spoon, sack races and running races. Grandmother and grandfather races never lack for entrants, neither do the married women and mens races. The boat races kick off when the tides are suitable and lifejackets are compulsory. For more information and an itinerary visit Hopai Sports Facebook page.
Itinerary: 10.45am - Children’s Tug O’War and field events begin 11.45am - Hopai He Man, a challenging swim and hill run open to men, women and teams 12.30pm - Adult field and novelty events 4pm - Prizegiving Chopping Events will run throughout the day featuring local and world class axe men. Evening barbecue, bring your own food and beverages (no bar facility). No dogs and no camping. To organise a boat ride there contact Water Taxis on 03 5741088, Pelorus Mail Boat on 03 5741088 or Pelorus Sound Water Taxi on 0508 HAVELOCK.
Maritime NZ is urging boaties to wear lifejackets. So far this year 19 people have died in recreational boating accidents, and Maritime NZ director Keith Manch says they do not want that number to increase over the Christmas holidays. “Your number one piece of safety equipment is your lifejacket – wear it. “Everyone on board must have a lifejacket of the right size and in good condition, and the skipper is legally responsible to make sure that happens.” “Marine VHF radios and distress beacons are the best communications for boaties.A cellphone in a waterproof lanyard bag is okay as a back-up but it should not be your main way of keeping in contact.”
Photo contest Don’t forget to get your entry into this year’s scenic coastal holiday photo competition with a difference. The Sun newspaper, the Marine Farming Association, and the Marlborough District Council are teaming up to offer weekly prizes of lunch vouchers at Jay’s cafe. The competition is open now, and each Friday for four weeks, starting from Friday January 19 and running until February 9, there will be a weekly prize of a $50 lunch voucher at Jay’s Café for the photo judged the best scenic photo and a voucher for the strangest litter picked up. Late artist features in exhibition By Celeste Alexander A unique art exhibition ‘InTandem’ will be opening next month showcasing a collaboration between two Marlborough artists, the late Robert Warren and Walter Scott. In the lead up to the opening of the exhibition at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery on January 13, Robert’s son Ian Warren reflects on his art and works. “Dad was self-taught in almost everything he ever did. His works are characterised by water – rivers, lakes, and the ocean, and it was the Marlborough district that provided most of the inspiration he needed. “He never wasted the paint left on his palette at the end of the day. He scraped it off the palette board with a palette knife, and layered it on to a new picture board. This was his version of ‘modern art’. They proved popular, sold well, and hang in homes throughout New Zealand and overseas. “A number of paintings were not found until after Dad died, he had
Robert (Bob) Warren stored them in nooks and crannies all over the house at Waikawa. They were ‘rejects’ by his standards, and some were un-signed, but they nevertheless found their way into the homes of friends, family and fans.” Robert (Bob) Warren was born in 1922. He received his initial art training at the Canterbury College School of Art, later to become the Faculty of Fine Arts at Canterbury
University. But this study was interrupted by World War II, and he served with the Royal New Zealand Air Force in the Pacific Islands. He had relocated to Blenheim, and married his wartime sweetheart, Gwen, who is still an active senior in the Blenheim community. Bob and Gwen established and operated Regent Furnishings in Maxwell Road for many years, and it was not until Robert retired that he could take up landscape painting in oils as a serious occupation. To this end, he enrolled as an adult student at Marlborough Boys’ College where he had no difficulty in renewing the basic skills of applying paint to canvas. By this time his son and family, with grandchildren, were living in Melbourne, Australia. It was most fortuitous for Robert that, during this period, and on two separate and extended visits to Melbourne, he was able to enrol in tutorial workshops conducted by Joseph Church, a then practicing Melbourne artist and art teacher.
Closer to home, Robert Warren was encouraged to pursue a wider range of techniques by local artist, Aston Greathead, to whom he was always eternally grateful for that help and encouragement. At the time of his death in late 2013, and in his 92nd year, Robert
was still painting as much as he could, and he often attributed his good health and longevity to the stimulation provided by his artistic pursuits. His works grace many homes throughout New Zealand, Australia, the USA and the United Kingdom. PBA.

From mid-January, the trust will be working from offices in Main Street, next to Lifetime Finance above Rebel Sport. Trust chairman David Hall and manager Brian Dawson thanked Andrew McKendry for helping the trust out. “Providing a base to work from has been hugely beneficial.” The trust has achieved a lot in the three years it’s been in existence, he says. “I’m very proud of how well it has gone.” Brian says being so strongly and directly supported by a prominent member of the Blenheim business community has been fantastic for the trust as an emerging organisation. Andrew says it has been a pleasant experience hosting the trust. “It’s a great organisation, and there have been some good people coming in.”

Marlborough holiday healthcare options Nelson Marlborough Health is urging people to choose the most appropriate healthcare option over the holiday season, launching a campaign to keep emergency departments clear of all but urgent cases. The ‘123, where should I be?’ promotional campaign aims to remind people to stop and think about the best healthcare option for their need. People with non-life threatening, short-term illnesses or health problems should see their GP, pharmacist, urgent care medical centre or phone Healthline on 0800 611 116. Patients who are sick but it is not an emergency are encouraged to see their GP in the first instance. It’s free to register or enrol with a GP, and enrolled patients pay a reduced consultation fee at that practice. Visitors to a medical centre where they’re not enrolled will pay less if they have a Community Services Card or High Use Health Card. All children under 13 are eligible for free general practice visits, both during the day and after-hours. If people are not able to see their GP they should go to the Urgent Medical and Injury Centre in Nelson or the Urgent Care Centre in Blenheim. Patients can be referred from these centres for x-rays if required. People should only go to a hospital Emergency Department for urgent medical emergencies. If unsure if it is an emergency call the free, 24 hour telephone health advice service, Healthline on 0800 611 116. Senior Medical Officer at Nelson Hospital Emergency Department Dr Mark Reeves says over-indulgence, both in drugs and alcohol, often results in an unnecessary

presentation at ED. He encourages everyone to moderate their alcohol intake and says nothing gets better after three standard drinks. “You’re as funny, as confident, as attractive and as good a musician, singer or dancer as you’re ever going to be at two to three standard drinks,” he says. Mark says having more than three standard drinks markedly increases the chance of doing something that results in harming yourself or someone you care about either physically or psychologically. He also reminds friends or family members not to encourage irresponsible behaviour. Soft tissue injuries, sprained ankles, minor cuts or injuries, coughs and colds or any and minor symptoms would be better managed by a visit to your GP, urgent medical centre or pharmacy. For dental concerns, call your local hospital or the dentist on call for acute dental needs at the weekend. After-hours options available for people who require non-urgent medical treatment outside normal business hours can be found at www.nmdhb.govt.nz/where-should-i-be For urgent medical attention dial 111 for an ambulance. A community pharmacist is often able to assist with non-urgent injuries or illnesses, such as sprained ankles, sunburn, or hay fever – situations that are uncomfortable but not life-threatening. A pharmacist can also give advice on the emergency contraception pill, emergency supplies of ongoing prescription medicines and first aid. www.nmdhb.govt.nz/where-should-i-be has a list of pharmacy opening hours over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Dark brown toxic algae amongst other algae in the Taylor River (arrows). The green and light brown algae are harmless.
River algae can be toxic
Keep your food safe Summer is in full swing and food officials are warning people to ‘clean, cook, and chill’ when preparing food this holiday season. Ministry for Primary Industries food risk assessment manager Roger Cook says most people think that food poisoning is something they get from eating out and not something they get from home cooking, but every year around 100,000 cases of food poisoning happen in the home, with campy-
lobacter being the most common cause. “Campylobacter bacteria naturally occur in the gut of animals and birds, especially chickens, and you can get food poisoning from it if good food safety practices aren’t followed in the home. “To help families avoid getting sick during the summer months, we want everyone’s mantra in the kitchen to be the three C’s: clean, cook, chill.”
The recent run of hot weather means more toxic algae are appearing in Marlborough’s rivers and streams than is normal for December. “Toxic algae are naturally occurring and prolific in summer,” Marlborough District Council environmental science and monitoring manager Alan Johnson says. “But the longer days and higher temperatures provide good, growing conditions for the algae, Alan says. Dogs and young children are most at risk if they come in contact with the algae, Alan says. “There have been dog deaths in other parts of the country from these algae - we don’t want the same happening here. “Young children are also at
risk if they play in fresh water with toxic algae and accidentally ingest it. “We want the public to be aware of this – ideally they can check out images on our website and get to know what they look like and avoid them,” Alan says. In Marlborough, the most common toxic algae are phormidium. They form dark brown mats growing on rocks in the river bed and are mainly found in fast flowing water. When algae mats become thick, they start to detach from the rocks and float in the water, accumulating along the edges of the river. This is when the algae present the greatest risk to people and dogs. “These algae have a musty
smell that dogs are attracted to,” Alan says. “A small area the size of a 50 cent piece can be fatal to a dog when digested. The neural toxins produced by the algae cause muscular twitching, paralysis and convulsion. “If your dog shows any of these symptoms after spending time in a river, take it to the vet immediately. In extreme cases, death can occur within 30 minutes after the first symptoms are noticeable. Young children are also at risk as they might accidentally ingest the algae when playing in the water.” While toxic algae mats have caused several dog deaths in neighbouring regions there have been no confirmed cases in Marlborough so far.

Motorists happy with SH1 road opening

Country Fresh Salad Range 100-190g
By Celeste Alexander One year, one month and one day after the Kaikoura earthquake in November 2016, the State Highway 1 north of Kaikoura reopened. Queues of vehicles lined up at midday for the opening of the coastal highway route and according to one motorist who sent photos into the Sun, the atmosphere was ‘happy and relaxed’. The couple arrived at midday and say the road did not open until 1.30pm but despite the wait and the three queues that had formed, motorists were in high spirits. “Most were well behaved, they had their chairs put out and picnics packed. People seemed pretty happy. “Driving down it was amazing to see the changes and what had been done by the workers. A huge ‘well done’ needs to go out to all of those involved,” they say. The trip from the Clarence River Bridge took one and a half hours, and when they returned that evening it took a similar time. NZ Transport Agency Earthquake Recovery manager Tim Crow says the opening is a fantastic achievement, and a testament

to the hard work of 1700 crew members on the ground and the great team work of the North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery (NCTIR) alliance partners – the NZ Transport Agency, KiwiRail, Fulton Hogan, Downer, HEB Construction and Higgins. “Anyone planning a trip should allow plenty of time to get to their destination safely in case of unexpected delays. We need to keep traffic moving safely, and allow people to reach Kaikoura and other destinations as easily as possible, so if you’re planning a sightseeing tour to view the road re-build, please consider waiting a few weeks. “The number of worksites will reduce from now until January with most of the crew taking a well-deserved Christmas break but we’ll be back in full force on 8 January to finish the job.” Work will continue in 2018 to bring State Highway 1 back to its pre-earthquake condition and complete a package of safety and amenity improvements on the 60km section of State Highway 1 between Clarence and Oaro.

Holiday visitor rush prompts 4G coverage Spark has lit up two key areas with new 4G coverage in Marlborough just in time for Christmas. In anticipation of the surge in demand for mobile data over the holidays, both Waikawa and Springlands have been activated with 4G on the 700 MHz spectrum to improve mobile services in these areas. This is welcome news to locals and people visiting the region over the holiday period, particularly as the Marlborough Sounds holiday hotspot of Waikawa is located to the north east of Picton. Another spot to get improved mobile coverage is the suburb of Springlands to the west of Blenheim’s central business, as Spark adds a new mobile site to accommodate the growth in
the area. The addition will also give some residents the option to use Wireless Broadband as an alternative to fixed-line services for low to moderate data users of home broadband. Wireless Broadband from Spark gives people quality broadband (with or without a landline), but by connecting to the nearest cell site rather than over a fixed line laid to their house. Spark’s General Manager of Networks Colin Brown says he’s ‘pleased to be able to offer 4G to this area for residents and visitors to Waikawa Bay and Springlands’. “They can now keep in touch when they are out and about to improve mobile coverage in the area.”

New water play area for Picton foreshore A new water play feature on Picton’s foreshore is proving a magnet for children this summer. “It’s a lovely tribute to the elderly man who bequeathed his estate to the Picton foreshore,” Marlborough District Council reserves and amenities manager Jane Tito says. “More than $100,000 was left for foreshore enhancement by 90-year-old Christchurch man Cliff Hague, who had spent his holidays in the town since his childhood.”
The new water play area has replaced the old paddling pool on the foreshore. Councillors have just approved $260,000 for more improvements to the Picton Foreshore Reserve. “There will now be funding available for shade sails and seating around the water play area,” Jane says. With the foreshore already too busy with summer activities to close off for construction, the work will begin after Easter.

Hot cars kill Tips for pet owners over the summer holidays As we enter into the hot summer months, it is important to remember your animals and to ensure they ‘beat the heat’. Here are some helpful tips from the SPCA. On a warm day, the inside of your car heats up very quickly. On a 30°C day the temperature inside your car can reach 39°C in 10 minutes - even in the shade with your windows slightly open. In 30 minutes it goes up to 49°C. A normal dogs body temperature is around 38.5°C. Dogs only sweat a small amount through their paws and rely on panting to cool down. In a hot car, even with the windows slightly open, panting is not enough to keep their body temperature cool. A dog can withstand a body temperature of 41°C for a short amount of time before it suffers irreparable brain damage and then death. Avoid leaving your dog unattended in a car at any time of the day. If the purpose of your trip is not for the dog, leave it at home.
- Make sure your animals always have access to fresh drinking water and adequate shelter for protection from the midday sun and heat. - Fill a shallow childrens pool for your animal to bathe in - just make sure they can get in and out easily. - Try to exercise your pet early in the morning or in the evening, these are the coolest times of day and your pet is less likely to overheat. Beware of hot pavements and sand as this can burn the pads of your pets paws. - All animals, especially those that are fair skinned and light haired can suffer from sun burn. Simply rub some suncream on the tips of ears, on the end of the nose and on the belly - these are the most sensitive areas - your animal will enjoy the attention too! - Ice blocks are a great way to give your dog a treat on a hot day and to keep them hydrated - simply freeze dog biscuits in water to make one.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page
England - she can be rebuilt from the Ashes In a rare moment of personal detail, I’ll spend my post-Christmas break at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Two years after spending thousands of dollars on last-minute flights and tickets to the World Cup final which broke my heart at the same sporting venue, I dare enter it again this week. Like all men who have been burned by those they love, I’ll re-enter tentatively without my heart on the line and watch a neutral Ashes test. Unfortunately, the game will largely be a dead rubber after England showed no batting backbone in Perth to tamely hand the Australians back the coveted Ashes Urn.
However, 100,000 people either Richies or Barmy Army should provide a fitting atmosphere. The only thing on the line for the Australians is the $1 million bonus they get for a 5-0 series sweep while English players like Alastair Cook, Stuart Broad and James Anderson fight to prolong their test careers. If I was rookie English captain Joe Root, I’d use the last two tests to blood some younger players. I’d ask Cook to retire, Anderson to do the same and Broad to be exiled to county cricket for the good of Queen and Country. Series lost, England may as well look to the future and if that future has their best player
in Root also as captain, then he needs to be the one to call the shots and have the players and team culture he wants. Sadly for him, the cupboard of ready replacements looks a little bare. There’s no genuine spinner, no fast bowler who can match the pace of the Aussies and no young opener banging on the door to remove Cook. Forget about Ben Stokes, he won’t be seen in this series now the games are meaningless, even if his chances were slim to none. The travelling fans deserve better than this current crop of English players - heck as a neutral I deserve to see a contest between two long time rivals.
Change can be good, a little scary but good. Tried and tested is the English way but that time has come and gone and like any good explorer away from home, Root now must lead the next generation forward before the edge of the Ashes rivalry is lost. At this rate, the Barmy Army will have nothing to sing for but their supper and it’s only a sunburn and not a contest that is guaranteed for me unless something changes soon. A younger English side must come to New Zealand after the Australian campaign - there is no other choice.
Skating stars whizzing off to nationals By Cathie Bell Six young speed skaters are off to nationals in Timaru next week, representing Marlborough. Coach Roxanne Green says there are two lots of national competitions in the next five weeks – the first in Timaru is road track and flat track competitions, and then bank track races in Hamilton in the first week of February. She says the young skaters have been working hard, and she and fellow coach Samara Pontague are looking forward to taking them away to compete.
Nationals speed skaters include Lily Pontague, Molly Stanton, Bree Campbell. Brooke Pontague, Harper Smith, and Erin Green. Roxanne says several of the skaters have only been skating for a year or so and they have been learning lots. “I think they’ll do really well, I’m very proud of them.” Five of the skaters have never been to nationals before so it will be all new, she says. “They are doing really well.” The sport is growing in Blenheim, Roxanne says, and there are some
stand-out skaters who have been skating about four years, such as Erin Green, who has been nominated for the New Zealand team to skate at the Oceania champs in Timaru in March. Roxanne says ‘heaps’ of people and local businesses have helped the skaters to raise funds for the national champs. The Blenheim Skating Club on Stephenson Street is opening through the holidays on Tuesday between 4pm and 6.30pm, and Sunday between 1pm and 3pm, except on statutory holidays, she says.
