“Everyone’s pretty happy with where it’s at, they’ve got good flavours, enough spectrum of flavours to work with and make some fantastic wine” - Marcus Pickens, manager, Wine Marlborough
By Kat Duggan Another grape harvest has come to an end for many Marlborough wine growers, with predictions the fruit is set to produce some top wines. Wine Marlborough general manager, Marcus Pickens, said this year’s harvest had been really well forecast, and everyone had worked really hard to get the fruit in before the rain set in this week, resulting in a good harvest all round. “Everyone’s pretty happy, with where it’s at, they’ve got good flavours, enough spectrum of flavours to work with and make some fantastic wine…I think there will be a fair few great wines coming this season,” Mr Pickens said. K2’s effects being felt in Blenheim By Chris Tobin The legal synthetic cannabis R18 drug, K2, is being sold from outlets in Blenheim and Picton with some of the users ending up at Wairau Hospital’s emergency department. “The emergency department has seen a small increase in probable K2 effects,” the department’s charge nurse manager Sharon North told the Sun. “These have been in both males and females and side effects appear to be of paranoid type behaviours and hyperventilation.” In Christchurch this week police warned that it was only a matter of time before someone died smoking synthetic drugs such as K2. They were commenting after three young people were admitted to hospital with serious kidney damage after smoking synthetic cannabis. Constable Andrew Holdaway of the Blenheim police said they were “very aware” of K2 but he did not have
any information regarding specific incidents involving the drug. “Although I have no doubt there are.” Synthetic cannabis is not subject to any regulation. Associate Minister of Health Peter Dunne has introduced a Psychoactive Substances Bill in Parliament which has passed its first reading. The bill wants the industry to prove synthetic cannabis as well as party pills, are safe before being placed on the market. Sharon North said the Wairau emergency department also saw the impact of other illicit drug taking and alcohol consumption. “Effects can vary from increased nursing and doctors’ time and also increased security, cleaning and having to have more radiology staff due to the abuse that staff can be subjected to. “With some illicit drug users we also have to request police presence to assist us with the patient care.”
Synthetic cannabis: What is it? Synthetic cannabis is a psychoactive designer drug derived from natural herbs sprayed with synthetic chemicals that, when consumed, allegedly mimic the effects of cannabis. It is best known by the brand names K2 and Spice. Research on the safety of synthetic cannabis is only now becoming available. It seems likely that synthetic cannabis can precipitate psychosis and in some cases it is prolonged.
What do you think? What do you think of K2, synthetic cannabis and party pills being sold in the community? Do you think it’s OK or not? Let us know. Write to chris@blenheimsun.co.nz

Cycle tour to pass through A nationwide eight day cycle event which starts on Saturday will pass through Blenheim next week. The Tour of New Zealand begins simultaneously in Cape Reinga and Bluff and finishes eight days later on the front steps of Parlia-
ment.Contestants will then have a criterium around the grounds at Parliament. Cyclists travelling the South Island leg will be in Blenheim on Friday April 26 and will ride, via Havelock, to Picton.
Trusted for generations
Race director Peter Yarrell said last year the tour raised $75,000 for charity and he hoped this figure would be broken.Spot prizes are being given away each day. For more information visit www. tourofnewzealand.co.nz
Continued from page 1 “I wouldn’t go as far to say as everyone has finished, but a good chunk of it [the fruit] is in, it’s mostly larger players or late ripening varieties left,” he said. The timing of the harvest’s end couldn’t have been better, with a large amount of rain forecast for the region over the next ten days. Forrest Estate Wines vineyard manager Tim Alexander said they had brought in the last of their late harvest grapes at 9pm Monday night, just in time to beat the rain. “Other than some late harvest Riesling we are all done. Harvest for us was three weeks long and overall was better than what some predicted it would be,” he said. Hunter’s Wines Marlborough also got the majority of their fruit in on Monday, bar five tonnes of Merlot, with managing director, Jane Hunter, saying the timing was nice. “It went pretty quickly, and without too much of a hitch, everyone’s pretty calm, and we’re looking forward to the pizza party on Friday afternoon,” she said.

Easy riders set to rumble By Chris Tobin The thunder of dozens of highpowered motorcycles will be heard in Blenheim on Saturday – but it will be in a good cause. The annual St John Ambulamce Ride will be held from Havelock to Waterlea Racecourse in Blenheim where badges will be sold and a barbecue held to raise funds for Marlborough St John. “We had 300 bikes in our best year and we usually average out at 150,” Ulysses Club Marlborough branch committee member John Laing said. “Usually some come from Nelson, the West Coast and a group from Christchurch.” He expected they would raise $1000. Marlborough St John area chairman John White said any public support they received was welcomed. “We’re very grateful for the support we get from Ulysses,” he said. The motorcyclists will muster at Have- All set for the St John Ambulance Ride on Saturday. Back from left: John White (St John area chairlock’s marina carpark starting at 11am man), Pete Ward, Mike Norman and Helen Faulkner. In front: Allan de Reeper, Maurice Bain, Don and will leave for Blenheim at 11.30am. King and John Laing. Photo: Chris Tobin
First haircut for a good cause Photo and story by Kat Duggan When seven-year-old Ainsley Turner has her first ever haircut in three weeks, she will not just be throwing it away. Ainsley has the longest hair at Witherlea School, and she has decided to put it to good use, by donating it to the Cancer Society, where they can use it to make a wig for a cancer sufferer. Ainsley will be cutting off the majority of her 81cm long hair, and donating that, as well as any funds she can raise to the Cancer Society. The idea came from Ainsley’s mum, Felicity Simmons, who says Ainsley has wanted to have her hair cut for the past 18 months. “Instead of cutting it off and throwing it away, we’re going to try and make someone else smile…for us hair can be a nuisance, but it can mean heaps to someone else,” she said. Ainsley is excited about the haircut, which will take her hair from below her bottom, up to her shoulders, but said she is a bit nervous too.
“I will look different at school, I have the longest hair at school,” she said. Witherlea School principal, Murray Hewson, said it was really pleasing to see one of their students demonstrating the core values they focus on as a school. “It’s one of those lovely examples where you see the core values being played out in the children’s personal lives. We have a number of core values, respect, responsibility, kindness, courage, fairness, and we treat them as a school wide focus. “The intention is the kids will come out and apply them to life, when we see things like this, or a child helping an elderly person across the road, it’s just really pleasing,” Mr Hewson said. Ainsley will be cutting her hair at 10am on May 8 at Clip Joint. Anybody interested in making a donation could make one into the Cancer Society’s bank account, number 06-0601-0044826-00.

Lucky to walk away A seventeen-year-old Marlborough Girls’ College student was lucky to walk away from the wreck of her car, which was written off when she rolled it on State Highway 1 on Monday morning. Ani Morrison’s car skidded across the right hand lane and rolled, landing upside down on the raised bank on the roadside, near Cob Cottage at about 8.30am, as she was on her way to school.

Blenheim police are urging residents to lock, and remove valuables from their cars, after a spate of recent burglaries in the region. Over the weekend an 18 year old man was arrested in Canvastown after dumping a stolen van, and another 18 year old unemployed male from Christchurch was arrested for unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle. McCormick & Co Jewellers Discovering jewellery with Pamela McCormick
My sources tell me
this year it’s all about ..... Pinky Rings Possessing a certain cachet they have, historically, exhibited coats of arms of noble families or the initials of commoners with royal reputations. Mainly in golds, the pinky ring is still popular with male and female especially if it’s a family piece. Today, especially for women, a pinky ring can be whatever you choose! An ideal way to wear Grandma’s engagement ring or add another diamond ring to your collection perhaps? 2013 -Year of the Snake 2013 -Year of the Snake Serpents are an enduring jewellery favourite. Popular mainly because of their symbolism; fertility, rebirth, transformation, protection, eternal love and regeneration of life. That seems to cover most bases! Cabochons Cabochons These are dome-shaped gem-stones which, along with mineral slabs (e.g. rose quartz etc.), have been shaped and polished but not faceted. They can be small (great pinky ring) or quite chunky and lend themselves to some imaginative pieces. Vintage Vintage Jewellery Jewellery Recent period films/TV shows have created a new wave of antique devotees. Vintage gemstones are being included in many of our remakes along with art-deco and antique- inspired pieces. Bangles Bangles && Bracelets Bracelets Wide in both styles, these are still enjoying great popularity. All our leading branded jewellery offers these striking styles. My international sources tell me that the bold are wearing 4-5cm-wide bracelets three at a time! There’s a thought! What What to to wear wear with with sheer sheer While there are many schools of thought on which jewellery accessorises sheer fabrics best I am inclined to agree with some jewellers who swear that “A pair of statement earrings won’t detract from whatever you have on.” We can assist you with all or any of these inspiring options. Obituary
Remembering a great mate, Pete McClelland By Celeste Lodewyk Passed away peacefully on April 7, 2013 in his 50th year. Pete was the proud father and fatherinlaw to Kylie and Jasen, Daryll and Jacqui, John and Tara, Jenny and Dean and an even prouder Poppa to Tynisha, Lilly, Maeghan, Ethan, Braidyn, Tempany, Luke and Chloe and a best mate to Digga and Lucian. Last Thursday family, friends and work colleagues came together to farewell a beloved father, Poppa and an all round great man, Pete McClelland. Best known for his cheeky personality and witty humour, Pete lived most of his life in Marlborough where he married, started a family and raised his four children. Being the devout family man that he was, it will be the memories of Pete calling around to see family members
and having a chat over a cup of coffee that will be best remembered. "It was not unusual for Dad to walk into our homes, plonk on the couch and relax enough to fall asleep," says daughter Jenny McClelland. "His life was all about family and being around us was where he was the happiest. Dad was always there to lend a hand, was always prepared to go out of his way for others and never expected anything in return," she says. Pete was also well liked and respected amongst his work colleagues at Dominion Salt. There he was self employed to the company and on many occasions he would willingly stay longer to cover for staff where needed. Pete's family would like to express their gratitude to friends, family and everyone who travelled to Blenheim
to farewell him and to those who sent cards, flowers and messages of support to the family. Any messages can be sent to 63 Dillons Point Road, Blen heim 7201.
Better living, but don’t take our word for it! I an and Lynette Sutherland have been living in their Peter Ray Home for two years, after they decided to upgrade and move into something new. It’s the third house they have built, the previous one was twenty years ago. They had a layout design in mind, and Peter Ray Homes were more than happy to accommodate their wishes. Lynette said she and Ian were able to be as hands on as they liked during the building process, and Rowan and Donna provided them with good advice when they needed it. “They presented us with the best options, together with the costs, and pros and cons for each option, but left us to make the final decisions ,” Ian and Lynette said. Ian said Rowan was excellent with
quality control. “ He monitored everything and was fussier than us! He checked that everything was as we wanted it and if anything wasn’t quite up to his (very high) standards then it was fixed before handing the house over to us. Furthermore, the follow up was great. They checked in on us several times following the move in to see if any problems had been discovered that needed to be put right”. Ian and Lynette said building a house can normally be stressful, but building with Peter Ray Homes had made the process much more enjoyable than than they had imagined. They said that Rowan and Donna were relaxed, friendly, and so helpful. “We’re very happy with the house , and we wouldn’t hesitate to build with them again.”

Crown signs Deed of Settlement The Crown signed a Deed of Settlement for all outstanding historical Treaty of Waitangi claims with Ngati Rarua at Wairau Pa on Saturday, “The actions of the Crown left Ngati Rarua without sufficient and suitable lands for their needs, which had serious consequences which are felt through to the present,” Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson said. “Today we take a significant step towards addressing the wrongs in the past and building a strong economic future for the Ngati Rarua in the region.” Ngati Rarua will receive financial redress of $11.76 million and have the opportunity to purchase Wairau
and Motueka Crown forestry land near Nelson. The Deed of Settlement also recognises the strong association Ngati Rarua has with Wairau Bar and Lagoons, Kaka Point and Te Tai Tapu. “This government is committed to resolving all historical treaty grievances,” Mr Finlayson said. “Today’s settlement shows that the Crown and iwi can work together to resolve historical grievances and build an economic platform that benefits everyone.” The deed was ratified by the Ngati Rarua community with support from over 99% of those who voted, and will be implemented through legislation.
Students learn Proactive driving Some of Marlborough’s students had the opportunity to enhance their driving skills over the weekend. Students from Marlborough Girls’, Marlborough Boys’, and the Community College who already hold licences attended a Proactive Drive course on Saturday morning, hosted by The Proactve Drive Youth Driver Education Trust. Volunteers from the Omaka Car Club tutor the students, guiding them on all things that could go wrong in the car, car control, and driving skills. The three hour course consisted of four parts, one theory module, and three practical modules, where each student had the chance to put into practice what they had learnt.

I wouldn’t want people knowing if I could help it but I think people would work it out in time. Especially because it’s made public when there’s a big win in a region, people would start putting two and two together.
I’d keep it a secret, because I wouldn’t want people to make me feel bad because I’ve got money.
I’d keep it a secret cause I don’t want people hassling me for money, I’d only tell my family and closest friends, cause I trust them.
I would probably keep it a secret, I’m a humble person, and wouldn’t want to flash it around so I’d just keep it private and go about my business.

Climate change Dear Ed Congratulations to Ken Lloyd on his letter on global warming. The "climate change" theory and its associated carbon trading is indeed a con which already rich people like Al Gore will make even more money out of while the public pays. I c o m p l i m e n t Lord Monckton Marlborough Federated Farmers on hosting Lord Monckton to speak in Marlborough on Friday April 19. I'll be there and hope many others will be too. Too much of the proglobal warming theory has been run by the media so hearing the other side is greatly welcomed. David Mack, Blenheim

Marlborough generosity Dear Ed, On February 28 my elderly parents (in their 80s) had an accident coming over the last hill from Christchurch into Blenheim at about 9pm. Dad was blinded by a driver who came over the top of the hill with his lights on high beam - he veered left, hitting a bank. The driver continued on, not realising the accident he had caused. Mum’s collarbone was broken by the seatbelt and ended up in Blenheim Hospital; the car was rendered undriveable. The staff at the hospital, the local police, Toyota (agent for their insurer) and the managers at the Admiral’s
Lodge were all wonderfully helpful. The mangers at the lodge helped Dad find alternative accommodation due to them being full on the Saturday night; the Toyota folk organised a rental car for pick up in Wellington and drove them to Picton to the ferry, assisting them to board as foot passengers with their luggage. There are possibly others who helped that we don’t know about! South Island hospitality and generosity is truly alive and well and very much appreciated by my folks, myself and my sister. With many thanks. Jean Goodbrand and Mhairi Wylde, Auckland
Sanctity of marriage Dear Ed, In the record of human history, Abba was the best matchmaker. He made Eve for Adam and gave her away to Adam, told them to reproduce establishing God’s way for family and the foundation of civilisation (Genesis 2 v18-23). Abba's’s plan finishes with a planned matched marriage of the bride, the church, made up of Jew and Gentile, and the groom Yeshua, God the Son. (Revelation 19 v 6-9). The in between state is taken from Ephesians 5 v25-27; the love of the husband for the wife typifies that between Messiach and his body, the church. (Verses 31-32). The most
holy and sacred of all relationships is typified by marriage. Third way the bible emphasises the importance of marriage, the way God the father himself has protected marriage. To keep it as sacred as He intended it to be. (Hebrews 13 v 4). Let marriage be held in highest honour amongst men and the marriage bed undefiled. For fornicators and adulterers God will judge. Let us in this nation hold in the highest esteem the holy estate of marriage between a man and woman and let our government be advised by our creator's best plan for our lives and not our own destructive ways. Graham Burtenshaw, Picton
Land rezoning Dear Ed, I refer to your article on March 27 regarding Marlborough District Council rezoning to start. It is very short sighted of the council to be expanding Blenheim over flat productive land. Blenheim sits on what used to be a swamp, and the surrounding area is old riverbed. This sort of land could all be subject to liquefaction. Blenheim should be expanding on the Wither hills, which is very light land,it may be more expensive to build there but it would saving our flat fertile land for future generations to grow food on. Ralph Mason, Blenheim
Carbon trading Dear Ed Adding to Ken Lloyd's letter, he is quite right about the scars from roaring up the Waihopai valley. It can be seen from town. The farm was bought by a company Timbergrow. It is owned by a Malaysian family the same one in behind King Salmon which rode roughshod via this government's fast track "system" over council's district plan. The company is "farming" carbon credits. It is through the Kyoto global warming theory which is codswallop. If you want to hear about the "con" then hear UK expert Lord Monckton on Friday evening at Clubs of Marlborough. Frank Henry

Our Arthur By Chris Tobin “I’m the only one doing it year-round,” Arthur Pacey says, as we look over the Moutere Rugby Club’s Awarua rugby grounds at Spring Creek. Arthur, 88, is sole groundkeeper at the ground, a job he has been doing since the early 1990s. This means Arthur mows the fields, cleans out the dressing rooms and toilets, looks after the all-weather lights, sets up irrigation over summer, marks the grounds and puts out the flags for “the little jokers,” as he calls them, the kids on Saturday mornings during the rugby season, and the same for the older players later on. A few weeks ago he did 15 days straight when he was flat out getting the grounds up to scratch for the season’s kick-off. He was dragging irrigation pipes around on his own. It was knocking me about,” he says. Until four or five years ago, the Moutere Cricket Club used to look after the grounds in summer. “Now I do it year-round on my own,” says Arthur. “I’ve heard plenty of them say, ‘I’ll give you a call and give you a hand,’ but no-one turns up. I do it myself.” During the season on a Saturday he’s busy all day until after six o’clock when he goes down to watch rugby at the local pub and heads home. What drives him? “I’ve been involved with this club since 1954,” he says. “Loyalty is my favourite thing. I believe in loyalty to the club. If they’ve looked after you, why go and change?” He’s had a lifetime in the sport and he hopes to be around to celebrate 70 years involvement in senior rugby. The link goes back to 1944 when he turned out for the defunct Oaro club in Kaikoura. After joining the Air Force he played for air force sides at Woodbourne, Awanui in North Auckland and Auckland. Back in Marlborough he played for Waitohi in Picton and in 1953 while serving in Korea with K Force he turned out for army sides. On his

return, Waitohi had gone into recess and so he linked up with Moutere where he has been ever since. “I came here and stayed here, married a local girl and worked on railways bridge gangs ending up an inspector.” Early in his rugby playing days Arthur had been a back but after a player was injured he ended up a goalkicking prop for the Marlborourgh Red Devils rep team. He played for Marlborough from 1950 to 1960 making 34 appearances as well as two outings for South Island Maoris. “I kicked the winning goal in 59 to win the Seddon Shield. Just being selected was the thing but it took awhile to build up matches; we only had three rep games a year at the start.” He played his last senior (or premier) game for Moutere in 1975 aged 51. He was in seven teams that won the Marlborough premier competition and was player-coach in two of them. The modern game doesn’t impress him too much. “I think it’s changed too much; they’ve made it half netball and with too much physical contact. It used to have the ball beating the man; now they’re taking the man without the ball. It’s really stupid.” Besides all his groundkeeping, there’s one other remarkable detail about Arthur. He’s still playing the game. “I play for the Musseleers (a Golden Oldie team) but I don’t know about this year. “The legs won’t follow each other any more and I’m getting short of breath. When I run 10 metres I’m puffed out. “I went to my doctor for my three month check-up and she said, ‘Arthur, you’ve got to expect it. You’re 88’.”

WARMTH 2013 Remember to ventilate your home this winter to avoid replace stale air.
Heat, cool and ventilate
AIR
don't be cold and damp this winter!
Heat, cool and ventilate - these are three important areas when it comes to maintaining a healthy home during winter. This is easily supported by a good heating system coupled with proper insulation, ventilation and moisture control. The World Health Organisation recommends the following minimum indoor temperatures, which are also supported by the Ministry of Health. A minimum of 18 C, or a minimum of 20 C for more vulnerable groups like children, the elderly and people who are ill.
A minimum of 16 C in your bedroom overnight. These recommended temperatures apply to all rooms, while you are using them. The simplest and cheapest way to ventilate your home is to open doors and windows regularly to allow fresh air from outside into your home. In winter, air your house at least once a day for a few minutes with wide open doors and windows to create a cross-draught. This will quickly replace stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air.
To avoid condensation problems, ventilate when you turn off the heating - for example, before you leave the house in the morning and just before you go to bed at night. Ventilation will remove moisture from everyday living most effectively when your home is heated properly because warm air can absorb more moisture than cold air. If you are willing to spend a little money, get an energy audit. It will tell you where you home’s biggest losses are, and point out many other places that could use a little work.

One common and annoying household problem experienced by households all over Marlborough is condensation. Not only does it occur in the most commonly moist areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, it can appear anywhere. And what follows condensation? Mould growth! So where does this slippery fiend come from and how can you prevent it from appearing in your home? Condensation the moisture on a cold surface, typically windows. Water vapour in the air hits the colder surface and transforms back from a gas to little droplets of liquid. This often occurs during colder weather or on instances when the air inside a room is warmer than normally expected. If condensation is forming on your windows, you just might find it on other surfaces as well such as walls, furniture, bedding etc. These surfaces are now at risk of mould growth with can cause serious health issues, so it is more important than ever to contact a window professional. Investing in some condensation prevention products and services will help to improve ventilation, moisture levels and inhibit mould growth. Window glazing is one solution to the problem as it works to reduce excess moisture on your window panes. To find out more about window glazing, costs and function contact your local, friendly window expert.

WARMTH 2013
Keeping Kiwis warm this winter Kiwi Insulation is entering its fourth winter insulating the homes of Marlborough, with the company priding itself on honest, transparent and old fashion service. With two different product ranges, both premium and budget, Kiwi Insulation can make insulation easy and affordable for anyone, either commercial, or residential. The company services homes and businesses across the top of the South Island, stretching from Picton right to Golden Bay, offering similar prices across the board, as well as fast and efficient service, regardless of which area they are working in. “We have a quality back up, we are audited at random, so there is integrity about installation, and we don’t send the bill out until it has had an internal quality check by our team,” said Nelson branch manager Lance Charles. Having serviced hundreds of homes over the past three years
in Marlborough, Kiwi Insulation works with the Marlborough District Council, who put the entire cost of the insulation onto the residents rates, so it can be paid off with the rates over nine years, meaning there is no need to worry about finding the money up front. The company was also selected to deliver the government’s EECA/Energywise subsidy programme, based on their proven financial stability and integrity, quality control systems, and outstanding customer service. Contact Kiwi Insulation using their free phone number, 0508 467 852, for a free no obligation assessment and quote for your ceiling, wall, or underfloor insulation. “We pride ourselves on transparency, honesty and no pressure on clients…if your house doesn’t need insulation we will tell you that. We value our reputation and want to be doing this for a long time, not just to make a quick buck,” Mr Charles said.

try again. Place plaques into the oven for three hours at 100 degrees C. They need to be placed on baking parchment or greaseproof paper so that they don’t stick. It needs to be on a very low heat for a length of time to thoroughly dry out and harden. If the oven is too hot they will rise and cook. The thinner the dough and the lower the temperature, the better these will turn out! If they are still doughy in the centre after 3 hours then turn them over and put them back in for another 2 hours. The rules governing medal wearing in New Zealand known as the Order of Wear specifically allows family members to wear medals of the deceased on the right side for national days of memorial like Anzac Day and Remembrance Day (11 November) and other notable events. Conventions for wearing a relative’s medals include: • People should only wear one set of medals and they should be directly related to their family, for example, should have belonged to a brother or sister, dad or mum, grandfather or grandmother. • In all cases these are worn on the right chest. • Only service medals and decorations mounted on a medal bar (full-

The red or Flanders poppy has been linked with battlefield deaths since the time of the Great War (1914–18). The plant was one of the first to grow and bloom in the mud and soil of Flanders. The connection was made, most famously, by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in his poem ‘In Flanders fields’. The red poppy went on to be adopted internationally as a symbol of remembrance, and proceeds from selling the poppies were put towards the welfare

Online census target reached Almost two million census forms were completed online in the 2013 Census, according to statistics minister, Maurice Williamson. This means Statistics New Zealand reached their target, of 35% of New Zealanders completing their forms online. “The uptake of the online option makes New Zealand a world leader in terms of collecting census forms online. At its peak on Census Day on March 5th the system handled 130,000 forms an hour,” Mr Williamson said. “While we have made no decisions about the final shape of the next census, it’s clear the online option will play a major part.” During the 2013 Census a pilot was run in Oamaru, where people within the pilot area received letters containing internet access codes only. Those people had to request hard copy forms if they wanted them, while the rest of the country had forms and access codes hand-delivered. Results are still being worked through for the Oamaru pilot area, however more than 65% of their census forms were completed online. Mr Williamson said the success of this pilot will help in planning for the next census. “In the meantime, Statistics New Zealand now has the enormous job of processing more than 5.6 million forms (online and hardcopy), with the results being available from December this year,” he said.
Leadership week gives new perspective By Kat Duggan Jacinta Sheridan did not know what she was in for when she agreed to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, she didn’t know what she was in for. The 24-year-old was chosen by the Picton Rotary Club to attend the leadership week in Christchurch, which was attended by about 40 other people, aged between 18 and 24. “I didn’t really know if I wanted to do it, but I liked it, it was a great experience, I think anyone, you have to be under 25, but I think everyone should do it, it gives you a whole new outlook on life and how you do things,” she said. Miss Sheridan said the week long course was valuable in that it teaches young people the skills they need to be leaders, including
time management. There was a different speaker on each day of the course, including Sam Johnson, the founder of the Christchurch Student Volunteer Army, as well as a number of group activities. At the end of the week each youth leader is presented with a Youth Leadership Award, which acknowledges the completion of the course, and their potential to become leaders. “Rotary Clubs send candidates who they think will be leaders… the certificate at the end tells that you have completed the course, and is good to put in your CV,” she said. Although she is not an official member of the Picton Rotary Club, Miss Sheridan continues to work with the club, mainly helping out at events organised by them.

Representing Marlborough Athletics father and daughter duo, Robbie and Jess Barnes claimed their first national running titles on Saturday at the NZ Mountain Running Championships in Wainuiomata, Wellington. Competing in the men's 50-54 age group over the 9km distance Robbie Barnes outclassed race favourite Wellington's Liam Healey to win by two minutes. Barnes' winning time was 46.1 minutes. The undulating out and back course course with a couple of extra loops played nicely into his hands. Despite drizzly overnight rain the course was in reasonably good condition throughout. Colin Earwaker (Lake City) and Paul Sharp (Wellington) competing in the men's 55-59 age group were the only two masters men ahead of Barnes over the 9km course. Jess Barnes comfortably beat Hastings athlete Monica Burnard by more than four minutes to comfortably win the junior women's crown. Race favourite Burnard

towered over Barnes and rocketed away at the start but it was Barnes' experience on the hills that saw her win in a time of 27.4 minutes over the
4km distance. In addition to both winning gold medals the Barnesalso won two of the eight spot prizes on offer.

Picton loses but still in final On Friday afternoon Marlborough Volleyball’s Subway Spikers’ & Premiers’ School’s Competition met and competed in the last round before finals next Friday. Picton Power playing in year 5/6 section 2 grade had not lost a game all term until last Friday. It was a surprising result then, when they lost to the Renwick Spikers. The teams were going point for point in the first two sets of the game till Renwick’s Jemma Irvine and Amy Bain both closed off the first two sets with some fantastic serving. Both set scores were 25-21.
The third set was also very close and went into extra time. Picton though were determined not to lose all three sets and secured the third 19-15. Picton then had their doubleheader against Redwoodtown Meteors and took all three sets securing their place in the play-offs next week for first and second. This weekend three Marlborough Spikers representative teams head to Nelson to play in the biennial Tasman Tournament on Sunday. The season concludes this Friday with club finals commencing at 4pm, entry is free.

Fast 5 netball tournament The Tokomaru Netball Club will be holding a mixed Fast 5 Netball Tournament later this month, to raise funds for the club. Fast five netball is based on the fundamentals of netball, with the main difference being the removal of the wing-attack, and wing-defence positions. The game offers teams a chance to score 1, 2 and 3 point goals, and there will be seven minute halves, where rolling subs can be tagged on and off. A team can have an unlimited amount of players, provided each player only plays for one team, and there are only three males on the
court at any time. Business house and social teams are all welcome, and entry costs $100, which guarantees a minimum of four games, and all equipment and umpires are supplied. The entry feel will be refunded if the tournament is cancelled. The Fast 5 Netball Tournament will be held at Queen Charlotte College on April 27, at 12pm, and there will also be a sausage sizzle and drinks available on the day. Contact Bindy Taylor for more information or to register, on 03 570 5630, 027 301 4046, or bndtaylor@ gmail.com by April 25.
