His life story

By Bill McElhinney “I can still hear her (wife Maureen) whispering in my ear,” Jim Loe says. “Every New Year she would be on to me to write my memoirs.” Jim and Maureen had been married for 66 years when Maureen passed away in 2013. Now today, his 95th birthday, Jim is launching his book, ‘A Memoir for Maureen.’ Continued on page 2 Cynthia Brooks and Jim Loe with Jim’s book and a sketch of Jim’s late wife, Maureen.

Jim Loe lays out his rich life story Continued from page 1 Jim is a member of a wellknown pioneering Flaxbourne family and the book is the story of his life, from tales of childhood mischief to the tragedy of losing two brothers in World War II. Jim and Maureen farmed The Homestead at Ward before retiring to Blenheim, but Jim’s son, Kevin, is still on the farm, and Kevin’s son, Thomas, is there as well, making it six generations of the Loe family on the property. Jim’s book has been written by Renwick writer and book

editor Cynthia Brooks, who also grew up in Ward and went to school with Jim’s daughter, Sally. With the urging from Maureen niggling away in his mind, Jim had been looking for someone to compile his memoirs when he met Cynthia at an Anzac Day service at Ward. “I got a phone call from Jim a few days later asking if I would be interested in helping him write his memoir,” Cynthia says. “I distinctly remember, as a small girl growing up in Ward, the dashing figure of Jim in

his riding gear commanding events in the horse ring at the Ward Show. “I also have happy memories of family visits to the Loe farm in the 1950s, and especially Maureen, who was always interested in my life and where it was taking me.” So Cynthia agreed and began her ‘Fridays with Jim,’ in a sunny nook at his Brooklyn Drive home, as he told his stories. “He was able to recall all the important events, and when I had written them down and brought them back for him

to check, he would make the necessary corrections,” Cynthia says. “Then we spent time going through photograph albums and selecting the photos to illustrate the book.” Cynthia’s husband Graham helped with the photo selection and the couple’s daughter, Wendy Russell, did the layout. Jim is looking forward to the book launch at home today with family and friends. “Maureen was always saying ‘Write your memoirs,’” Jim says. “Now I’ve finally done something about it!”

Theatre proves a popular venue By Bill McElhinney “That’s why we built it, that’s what it’s for!” Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust chairman Kevin Moseley is enthusing about the number of local groups that have been in the ASB Theatre in the past month. “There have been hundreds of kids and families,” theatre event manager Katharine Overend says. “There was Shrek the Musical, Hooked on Christmas, the Dawn Chorus, and then the Marlborough Singers with the Blenheim Brass Band and the Civic Orchestra.” The theatre opened in March last year and a highlight for Kevin and other theatre trust members has been the amount of use by locals. “It was always intended to be a community facility,” Kevin says. “It was full of kids and parents for the Primary Schools Music Festival, the combined Colleges production of Evita. The Civic Orchestra is attracting more

young people because now they have a wonderful venue to play in. “Groups now have to book well in advance to get in as more and more acts now want to come to Blenheim.” Another highlight for the theatre trust has been the feedback about the facility from professional touring groups. “The Pink Floyd Experience used our sound system rather than their own – we were the only venue in the country where they could do this. “At the other end of the scale, the Seven Sopranos, who were here in September, didn’t use any sound equipment because the theatre acoustics are so good. “Their manager said that in seven years of touring, this is the Theatre Trust chairman Kevin Moseley with fundraising stalwarts only venue where they have been Robyn Cuddon and Ross Anderson. able to do this.” The theatre trust fundraising 2007 for what was to be a three- ence market is picking up and team is still working to ensure month effort, but they’re still here the theatre is being used in the final few areas in the facility and determined to finish the job,” conjunction with the Convention are finished. Kevin says. Centre. Being able to combine “The fundraisers joined up in “In the meantime the confer- the two facilities is a big plus.”

Art by Robert Warren and Walter Scott InTandem is an exhibition of the work of two talented Marlborough artists. Walter Scott built his early passion in visual arts into a career in photography, before adopting pastels as a favoured art medium. He now works in both pastel and oils. The late Robert (Bob) Warren’s early study at Canterbury College School of Art in the 1930’s was curtailed by World War II, and his love of oil painting was not fully realised until his retirement and in his more senior years.

Looking back on 2017 By Cathie Bell 2017 has been a mixed one for Marlborough. On the economic front, the district has done well, with the economy growing 3.5 per cent, a full percentage point above the national average. And that was achieved despite State Highway One south of Ward being closed and all visitors and freight having to make a journey many hours longer through the alternate route of State Highway 63. The road re-opened on December 15 and most people in the district are looking forward to traffic resuming, even though the road won’t be fully restored for at least another year. The overall outlook for Marlborough’s primary production

economy is good; prices for forestry, horticultural products, seafood and meat, have all risen recently and the falling NZ dollar is also helping export economies like Marlborough’s. Socially, things were not as rosy. The housing market is in crisis, with more than 50 families unable to find anywhere to live and the Government spending $3000 a week to put them up in motels. The combining of Ma rlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ Colleges on one co-located site is no closer to happening, with the Education Ministry seemingly giving up on its previouslypreferred Alabama Road site and re-assessing. There is no official response

to Blenheim man Craig Basham’s proposal to move the colleges onto a combined girls’ college-Bohally Intermediate site, and move Bohally onto a corner of the nearby Waterlea Racecourse. But there was an immense groundswell of public opinion backing the idea, with pages and pages of letters to the editor of The Sun, all in favour. The Education Ministry says the timetable for opening the new school in 2021 still stands, despite it having no site selected. National MP for Kaikoura Stuart Smith moved to the Opposition benches in October, as a Labour-NZ First coalition government with the Green Party in support for confidence and supply taking over.

A potential option for the co-located colleges is to put it in McLauchlan Street.

Craig Basham.

Power trust ups distribution By Cathie Bell The Marlborough Electric Power Trust is to increase its distribution to consumers to $180 later this month, and new chairman Ian Martella has a goal of increasing it to the equivalent of two months’ electricity for the average power user. The trust owns 100 per cent of lines company Marlborough Lines on behalf of the district’s power consumers and it held its yearly meeting to discuss Marlborough Lines’ performance on December 21. In his chairman’s report, Ian says the investment and operational decisions made by Marlborough Lines have resulted in healthy dividends

being received by the trust. This has allowed the trust to grow the distributions to consumers from $50 originally to $150 this year, he says. This is to increase to a $180 payment to be made later this month, on top of a discount distributed by Marlborough Lines to be made in March. That March payment will be about $226 to the typical power consumer, company managing director Ken Forrest says. Ian says it is the trustees’ hope that the benefits payable to consumers will continue to grow over time. “In time it would be wonderful to see the level of distributions together with the company discount

reach the equivalent of two months’ free electricity for the average household consumer.” The meeting was not well-attended, only just making its quorum, which Ian says is disappointing. The trust is working to engage with consumers more, he says, updating its website and providing more information. There were questions from the floor about the performance of Marlborough Lines and Yealands Wine, which is 86 per cent owned by Marlborough Lines. Ian says the trust is comfortable with the performance of the company and the forecasts of future improvement.

Marlborough Electric Power Trust chairman Ian Martella talks to the annual meeting, with trustees from left Clive Ballot, John Cuddon, Ross Inder, Malcolm Aitken, (both obscured) and Nicki Stretch and treasurer Brenda Munro.

Georgina Westergard-Allen pictured after her surgery in America. She is doing extremely well and is on track to achieve what her surgeon forecast. Photo provided.

Georgina doing well after surgery By Celeste Alexander Young Georgina Westergard-Allen has made several appearances in the Sun over the past 12 months, as we followed her story of fundraising for a life changing surgery, to having the surgery and going into recovery. Georgina had her Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery in October at America’s St Louis’ Children’s Hospital. It involved Georgina’s highly spastic nerves being permanently cut in her spine, leaving the good ones intact. To help pay for the surgery and travel costs, the community generously supported a number of fundraising events and the family managed to raise a whopping $79,827. Georgina is home and doing ‘extremely well’ with post operative

The 110 year old farmhouse was lovingly renovated.

therapy. Her mother Siobhan spoke to the Sun about the ‘fantastic’ results they had seen following the surgery. “The surgeon initially told us that we would get the results we did... and he was right! He was absolutely spot on. “Georgina will need a lot of strengthening but that’s what we will be focusing on with her therapy. Now school’s out we will have two people working instensively with her over the summer holidays, five days a week. “But really we just can’t get over how well the surgery has improved her and to be honest, it was the best thing that we did. “Thank you to the community for supporting us, it’s truly been life changing for Georgina,” she says.

Century old farmhouse restored By Celeste Alexander A 110 year-old farm house on a property in the the Kaituna Track area has been saved from demolition and renovated. The house has been described as being ‘special’ by the owner, but records cannot be located. All that can be said about it is that it’s one of the older farmhouses in the area remaining. It was built in an area that was then ‘a bit of a highway’ when horses and carts used to connect through to Nelson. The owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased the

property several years ago. She sought the opinion of a number of people to see if it could be saved but was told ‘it’s not worth it’. The last person she spoke with was Clayton Cowan of Cowan Building Ltd who identified that it had ‘good structural bones’ and could in fact be restored. “I advised her that if we bulldozed it and built a new one, it was going to be twice the price as it was to renovate, plus she would lose the character, charm and memories it held. “It would have been quite an expensive home for that era... a

well-built house,” Clayton says. The renovation took four months and was completed around November. He says the owner’s family member had moved to Marlborough and wanted a nice place to live, so we took on the task to restore it to a liveable little villa. “There was a lot of rimu timber in there and beautiful features so we put in a more modern kitchen and renovated it so it was nice, clean and liveable. It still has a lot of it’s original charm... it come up good,” he says.

FRIDAY PRICE FORECAST Local artist Walter Scott will have 20 of his pieces exhibited this month. Photo provided.

Walter Scott in tandem with late artist for inspiring exhibition

LOW PRICES ARE SWEEPING THE SOUTH!

By Celeste Alexander In the lead up to the opening of the art exhibition ‘InTandem’ at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery, Walter Scott discusses his work that will be featuring alongside that of Robert Warren. InTandem opens on January 13 and is an exhibition of the work of two talented Marlborough artists, Walter Scott and the late Robert Warren. Walter’s early association with the visual arts was in the early 1950s when his focus was then on photography. He later picked up a paint brush and did his first oil painting in 1973 before laying the brushes aside for sticks of pastel. Walter says while Robert had ‘the advantage of art school training’, he did not. “I’m self taught... my work is much different. Having not been taught I’m not forced to comply with rules so I go my own way and find that form of expression that suits my personality. “Robert’s is very traditional whereas mine is different. I had to teach myself and learn by my mistakes. “I’m not a traditionalist, what I’m doing is

more expressionist and impressionist. I pick up a feeling and paint something that goes along with that,” he says. Walter’s work will be on exhibition alongside Robert’s which will show a contrast between the two styles in a supportive capacity. “People will see the types of work that can be done which can be encouraging for others.” He will have around 20 pieces exhibited including work that goes back over a number of years. “You can see in this exhibition my growth. Some of this work was a little traditional but as I progressed with oils and painting knives you can see it going in quite a different direction,” he says. Walter is a Life Member of the Marlborough Art Society, received the medal of the ‘New Zealander of the Year Award - Local Hero Award’ sponsored by Kiwi Bank for services to the visual arts both locally and nationally and today is actively exploring impressionism, expressionism and abstract art in both pastel and oils. The exhibition runs from January 13-30. PBA.

Chamber calls for more affordable housing

TODAY ONLY!

paknsave.co.nz Valid Friday 5 January

By Cathie Bell Until Marlborough works out how to attract new residents and can house them affordably, it will continue to have acute labour shortages, the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce says. The chamber has published a report showing the region will need approximately 3600 more workers by 2020. The ‘Solving Marlborough’s Demographic Challenges’ report, funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, identifies issues facing the region. C h a m b e r c h i e f executive Grant Kerr says Marlborough is placed at the top of MBIE’s employment growth rate list over the next few years due to significant industries of wine and aquaculture. “With an ageing population, attracting and retain-

ing immigrants is now a commercial and economic imperative for the region,” Grant says. The report says one aspect of attracting skilled migrants to the region is to ensure there is a stock of affordable accommodation. “If we are serious about making Marlborough an attractive proposition for skilled migrants, creating affordable housing is an acute issue. We are calling on the Council to make more land available to develop mixed housing stock. “The reality is that many of the workers we need to attract simply can’t afford a four bedroom, two bathroom home in one of the new subdivisions. We’d like to see the council work with developers to ensure there is a range of housing options available, which would help to alleviate the stress on the job market and attract more

people.” Chamber board member Khalid Suleiman says the council can encourage development by faster installing and upgrading of services. Removing developer contributions on infill development would make it easier to subdivide existing property, he says, making it more feasible and increasing the density of the town, reducing the effects on services, including roading of sprawling development. Grant says the report only focuses on the pressures on two big industries. “If we take into consideration all industries and sectors across the region, the issues become more concerning. The chamber is keen to work with the council and other parties, including central Government, to find a robust approach.”

Upper South Island travel guide PLAN YOUR JOURNEY – PICTON TO CHRISTCHURCH

PICTON

State Highway 1 (SH1) north of Kaikōura opened to daytime traffic on Friday 15 December, restoring the coastal highway link from Picton to Christchurch. The re-opening of SH1 gives people two viable options for travel around the upper South Island, with the alternate route (via state highways 63, 6, 65 and 7 through Lewis Pass) remaining a reliable 24/7 option.

Make sure you allow enough time for your journey, whichever route you chose. Unexpected events, such as a crash, high volumes of traffic, ongoing wet weather or seismic activity, can cause delays. Ongoing roadworks and reduced speed limits in places mean that it won’t be possible for you to make up time.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON SH1

1

Parts of the road will still be under construction, so there will be some unsealed sections, lane closures with Stop/Go controls and speed restrictions. There will be night closures (8.30pm – 7am) north of Kaikōura between Clarence and Mangamaunu, and between Goose Bay and Peketa in the south. Closure points will be monitored 24/7.

OPEN 24/7*

CHRISTCHURCH

* Conditions can change any time, so it is important to check the current status at least two hours before you travel and at key route decision points. Visit www.nzta.govt.nz/p2c or freephone 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49)

Consider road closure hours before starting your trip and leave enough time to be clear of these sections so you can continue your journey. The opening hours are subject to adverse weather and seismic activity. If there is a lot of rain or another significant event, we may have to close the road for short periods of time. It’s important to remember the safety of those using the highway, and working on it, will always be our top priority.

WHEN ARE YOU PLANNING TO TRAVEL ON SH1? Following the road opening on 15 December, most of the work sites closed down to help with traffic flow over the busy Christmas period. From 8 January it will be a noticeably different drive compared to the previous few weeks as crew will be back on the ground starting work. By 15 January the work programme will be back in full delivery which will have a significant effect on the coastal corridor. NZ Transport Agency Journey Manager Tresca Forrester says ‘It’s a balancing act to schedule the reinstatement work to have a minimal effect on travel time while also ensuring the work gets done. After 8 January drivers should expect it to take at least 5 ½ to 6 hours to drive between Picton and Christchurch on SH1 but should allow plenty of extra time in case of delays. Check www.nzta.govt.nz/p2c for the latest information.’

BE ROAD COURTEOUS • No stopping on SH1 within the closure areas outside of designated stop bays. • Be patient and cautious. Road conditions will be unfamiliar to many drivers, so a little bit of patience will go a long way. • Follow all traffic signs and any instruction given by road crew. • Obey speed limits to keep all road users safe. • Stay focused around rail lines. Expect trains at any time. • Keep fresh by taking breaks and supporting communities on the route.

1080 Cruelty Dear Ed, I read Der Bingle’s letter and was horrified at the cruelty of 1080 poison. It must be an agonising death for any creature. I am appalled at the double standards, like one set of animal cruelty laws for domestic stock or dogs and cats and no set of rules for wild animals. Does not a deer or possum slowly expiring due to a poison like 1080, feel the some pain as it were a sheep or horse? Does DOC have a conscience? Or are they callous killers? From a trip through Molesworth two years ago, I noted the open nature of the country. I would imagine possum numbers to be very low. It is just not possum country. So where is the problem? I asked a farmer friend. Molesworth is the only farm in Marlborough with bovine Tb. and DOC is the caretaker. Makes you wonder eh? W. N. Blenheim

Feeling picked-on Dear Ed, Has anyone had trouble posting mail lately or are NZ Post just picking on me? I had mail returned to me by Christchurch Mail Centre with ‘insufficient address’ stamped on it. The address was a certain number, Awatere Valley Road, Marlborough. Surely everyone knows where the Awatere Valley is!! Since then I have had two letters POSTED back to me (sender). They were franked on the back of the envelope where my name and address as sender was and no stamp. On the front was a large stamp with the address of the intended recipient. How the hell does this happen? Does no one think anymore!! The postie who sorts his/her mail must have seen that it was incorrectly franked. Colin Geertson Blenheim

Harbourmaster

19 recreational boaties die so far in 2017

‘No excuses’ on lifejackets and speeding ‘No excuses’ on lifejackets and speeding The Harbour Master’s patrol vessels are back on the water for summer to promote safe boating and compliance with navigation bylaws. There are two main components to compliance enforcement and education - and our programmes are designed to achieve both. This summer the Harbourmaster is working with Maritime New Zealand and eight councils on the ‘No Excuses’ campaign, run for five days between 1 December and 31 March. During the campaign Harbourmaster and Maritime NZ patrols will be on the water working together. In Marlborough, the

focus is on safe speed for recreational and commercial vessels, particularly in high risk areas. These include marinas, mooring areas, swimming areas, popular bays and beaches, and busy or congested areas. These areas are marked by yellow five knot buoys, so there’s no excuse for not slowing down to a courteous and safe speed. If you do get caught exceeding five knots you can expect a fine. The patrols aren’t there just to pass out fines. Like last year, we will have fuel vouchers to give away to every boat who takes part in our safe boating survey. The survey is run nationwide to better understand the most pressing safety issues on the water, region by region. If

you see our patrol boats on the water, wave us down for a chat and share your views about maritime safety. Marlborough was the first region in New Zealand to offer a free workshop for anyone wanting to learn more about safe boating. Two hundred people have already been through the programme and given great feedback. The workshops provide a few hours in the classroom with an experienced Coastguard skipper followed by boat trip in the afternoon. Attendees may be eligible for discounts on Coastguard courses such as VHF or DAY Skipper. For further information, contact: Lastly: prep your gear, check the weather and know the rules. Happy boating!

So far this year 19 people have died in recreational boating accidents, and Maritime NZ does not want that number to increase over the Christmas holidays. “There are simple, practical steps boaties can take to help keep safe on the water,” Maritime NZ Director, Keith Manch, said. “Your number one piece of safety equipment is your lifejacket – wear it, not near it. It is too late when you are in the water to try to find a lifejacket and put it on. “Everyone on board must have a lifejacket of the right size and in good condition, and the skipper is legally responsible to make sure that happens.” Lifejackets work best together with waterproof communications.

“Lifejackets help you float and have saved countless lives but if you can’t call for help, we can’t rescue you,” Mr Manch said. “Marine VHF radios and distress beacons are the best communications for boaties. “A cellphone in a waterproof lanyard bag is okay as a back-up but it should not be your main way of keeping in contact.” Other important tips for boaties are: • check the marine weather forecast, it is different to the land forecast • avoid alcohol – you wouldn’t drink and drive, it’s the same on a boat • be a responsible skipper – keep a safe lookout and know the rules of the sea.

My ideal day is spent.... It would be a cold, rainy day, I would have the day off and I would be in bed sleeping and snacking. One of my best holidays was... Europe, getting tragically lost in France with my sister. One thing on my bucket list is.... Go to Australia and locate 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney.

Q A Q A Q A

JAys co owner If I could, I would....

Honestly I dislike this expression. If I can, I will! What’s your favourite meal? Boil-up, especially the second day!

My guilty TV pleasure is .....

Blue Planet! Season two episode two is a must watch!

Q A Q A Q A

My parents used to say... “You’re gonna need each other one day” when my siblings and I would argue. They were right. The keys to happiness are... Definitely kindness, to yourself and to others.

Who would you love to share a meal with and why? My Uncle Steve and late Aunty Dordy. Especially if they’re cooking!

Steam train summer fun If you have yet to experience the heritage steam journey between Picton and Blenheim, travelling on the historic World War 1 memorial locomotive, Passchendaele Marlborough Flyer Steam Train, make sure you do over the summer holidays.

HAPPY

New Year! FROM THE TEAM AT FRESHCHOICE

Queen’s medal recipients, from left: Emily Cross, Toby Lloyd, Joshua Powell, and Nathanael Lane.

Queen’s medals in recognition By Cathie Bell Four young Marlburians have been recognised for their hard work and community service in the Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades with Queen’s Awards. Emily Cross, Toby Lloyd, Joshua Powell, and Nathanael Lane were presented with their awards by Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy at a special ceremony at Government House in Wellington earlier this month. Boys’ Brigade captain Chris Lane, who attended the ceremony, says the awards mark years of effort and community service by both boys’ and girls’ brigade members. Community service is a big chunk, as is ‘adventurous things’ and a national leadership development course at Lake Rotoiti, he says.

With a Christian education focus, Chris says Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades provide good ‘wholesome’ activities for young people. Emily was also presented with a Queen’s Award badge by Girls’ Brigade New Zealand National Commissioner Charlotte Saunders at a dinner function for the recipients and their families after the Government House ceremony. The Girls’ Brigade Queen’s Award is a two-year programme of demanding work, Charlotte says. Open to young women aged from 15 to 25 years, it is an international award of the highest merit and recognises qualities of leadership, dedication and excellence in areas of community life.

Two people with Blenheim connections and two well-known Blenheim men have been awarded New Year Honours. Prominent author Joy Cowley, who lived in the Marlborough Sounds for many years, has been awarded one of the highest honours, the Order of New Zealand. Joy has been one of New Zealand’s most prolific and successful writers since the 1960s and has written 41 children’s picture books. She has emphasised the need for children to see themselves in the books they read, and has been heavily involved in teaching early reading skills and helping those with reading difficulties. Father Barry Scannell, a former parish priest of St Mary’s Blenheim Catholic Parish, has been awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit. Since 2010 Father Barry has been Parish Priest of St Mary of the Angels church in Wellington which was damaged in the 2013 Seddon earthquake. The church was closed and Father Barry brought together a group and established a plan for seismic strengthening work. He helped raise almost $10 million for the project and oversaw the continuation of Sunday Masses in other venues and provided continuous pastoral care for his parishioners during this time. Senior constable Russ Smith of Blenheim has been awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit. Russ, the community constable in Blenheim since 1996, developed and implemented an education and pastoral care package for Recognised Seasonal Employees in Marlborough; has led the Marlborough Youth Trust as chairman since 2007; and is a member of Safe and Sound at the Top

Young faces won’t be forgotten By Bill McElhinney Nine young people who were brave enough to put their faces on a Blenheim mural have been rewarded by the Marlborough Youth Trust. “You were brave to do this,” trust chairman Russ Smith said as he presented the youngsters with a special gift just before Christmas. The faces of the nine youngsters were painted on the walls of the walkway between Shirtliff and Lucas streets as part of Youth Week, a national celebration which ran from May 26 to June 4. The mural shows the faces of the nine blowing 307 ‘speech bubbles,’ which were painted with slogans and designs from young people under the age of 24. The mural was designed by Blenheim artist Mieke Davies, who asked young people she knew to ‘put their hands up’ as the models for the work. Youth trust manager Jo Lane said the

Trust had received some money from the Trustpower awards, so decided to use it to provide each of the youngsters with a picture of their face as it is presented on the mural. The mural is part of the Street Intensive programme, which cleans up streets in Blenheim with the aim of reducing crime in the area. The site had been part of the first ever Street Intensive, in 2008, but was given a refresh. “The murals are a way of getting in to a neighbourhood and helping people to get connected,” Russ says. “When you build relationships in a community it really helps the neighbourhood, and reduces crime. “This mural has made the alleyway a bright place that people feel safe to go through. “And we’ve had no problems since it was done – it hasn’t even been tagged.”

Faces to remember. From left, standing: Deven Katu, Deborah Barron, mural artist Mieke Davis, Janine Searle, Jasmyne Henry and Sophia Wills. Front: Pop Kruenet and Tana Connor-McClean.

Treats for furry friends at SPCA By Celeste Alexander Animals at the Marlborough SPCA will have some extra goodies to enjoy over the holidays thanks to those who donated to the Sun’s Christmas Appeal. The appeal ran through December and the community showed its generosity by donating boxes upon boxes of food and treats. Marlborough SPCA centre manager Abby Laskey says the donations are ‘very much appreciated’, particularly as they gear up for kitten season. “Donations like this we rely on to keep the animals fed and entertained, so thank you very much to everyone who supported the appeal,” she says. The centre is also interested to hear from anyone willing to donate some

time as a volunteer as well as foster carers. “We will be busy over Christmas with kittens, mums and kittens and strays coming in so we are looking for people able to foster them for two to four weeks, until they are old enough to be desexed and adopted out. “Also with volunteers we are looking for people able to come in and help around the centre and spend time with the animals,” she says. Abby also wishes to remind dog owners not leave their dogs in cars over the summer season. “We’ve had 11 calls in the past week with dogs left in cars, so please leave them at home unless they are going Marlborough SPCA centre manager Abby Laskey with some of the donated somewhere like the vet,” she says. pet food from the Sun’s Christmas Appeal.

sports talk With Jacob Page

A dummy’s guess to the 2018 sporting year The more things change, the more they stay the same. Here are some sporting predictions for 2018. • Asafo Aumua will be the starting hooker for the All Blacks. The 20-year-old man mountain appears to be the next superstar of the All Blacks and the timing seems to be perfect for the men in black. The No 2 jersey has been one lacking in depth for some time. Fellow Wellington hooker Dane Coles is a phenomenal player but he is struggling to keep his body together. Aumua dominated the national provincial competition in 2017 just like he did age-group rugby and he should do the same in Super

Rugby with Coles already likely to spend most of the campaign injured. • Expect the Crusaders to win back-to-back titles. • Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor will beat Martin Crowe’s 17 year centuries for the Black Caps. This is not a gutsy call considering both men are tied at the moment but I expect the cream to rise to the top in the home series against England in March. • Robbie Manson will beat Mahe Drysdale for the single scull rowing berth. Marlborough’s Manson is practically there already in knocking off the Olympic champion. Mahe has nothing left to prove after a swag of medals in the sport while Manson’s terrible

Olympic campaign in a team boat in Rio will be a motivator for him to push on to Tokyo in 2020. • The Warriors will still miss the NRL playoffs. The team badly needs to repay the faith but the squad looks weaker in 2018. Rugby league needs an injection and some good PR after the disaster only the Kiwis World Cup campaign. I just can’t see it being 2018. • Wayne Bennett to coach the Kiwis. This has to happen, the NZRL needs to move heaven and earth to get the best rugby league coach in the world back in their ranks for the first time since their World Cup victory in 2008. • George Bennett will be a top 10 contender

in the Tour de France. The man from Tasman is a force and he has the drive to push the top cyclists in the world in an event which is struggling for credibility with the number of drug issues. • Finally, the All Blacks will beat England at Twickenham on the end of year tour. The most highly anticipated encounter for many years promises to be something special - at least if you listen to Eddie Jones, the English coach, who has been blowing enough hot air to blow around the English Rugby Union’s money they’ve promised to give the team in an effort to beat the All Blacks. It won’t happen in 2018 but it will be a great appetiser for the World Cup in Japan in 2019.

Motorsport through the lens By Celeste Alexander If you have been out to the Eastern States Speedway track, you may have noticed a photographer standing on the infield or walking about taking photos in the pits area. Jason Green is the resident photographer at the track and, as of this year, a committee member too. By day Jason works as a maintenance engineer and in his spare time he photographs a variety of motorsport throughout the region. “Well, all of my spare time goes on photography,” he laughs. Originally from Nelson, Jason has lived in Blenheim for six years. Before that he was working in Australia for 18 years but after deciding to come home, he opted to be close to his parents who live in Seddon. He had already been photographing landscapes and at one point he decided he wanted to delve into the ‘racing culture’. “I realised there was speedway here so I went along

and started out wandering through the pit area, taking photos and talking to drivers. “I did that for two meetings before realising drivers appreciated their photos being taken so I asked Stu Coutts if I could have a go on the infield. “I’ve been doing it for three seasons now,” he says. One of the stand-out moments for Jason was photographing the New Zealand midget champion, and sprint car champion Michael Pickens. “It was a race meeting in Nelson and I got this awesome shot through the fence of Michael surrounded by a cloud of dust. I also broke a camera that night due to stones flicking up but I was still rapt with the image I got,” he laughs. Another highlight was when he first started photographing at the Blenheim track, when the North vs South Super Saloons meeting was held. “I had done three meetings and they let me on the infield

to take photos... it was really scary as I was surrounded by these 20 super saloons. I will never forget that,” he says. This season Jason was vot-

ed onto the committee and in addition to photographing the racing, he assists with promotions and the general running of the club.

“It’s really rewarding. The best way to describe it is being part of a family,” he says. So far Jason has had his images featured in the Dirt

Track magazine, a motocross magazine and a number of newspapers, including the Sun which features his work on a regular basis.
