New Year baby Welcome baby Toloa

By Celeste Alexander Baby Toloa Lousiale could have been Marlborough’s first Christmas baby, but instead stayed put until January 1, making him the New Year baby. Parents Mele and Lopini who came from Tonga two years ago say it was a very special moment. “Toloa is our sixth baby and the first born in New Zealand, so adding the title of New Year baby makes it even more memorable,” Mele says. Continued on page 2 Mele Lousiale pictured the day of her son’s birth. Toloa Fanguna Lousiale was Marlborough’s first baby, born on January 1.

Baby number six first for 2018 Continued from page 1 Mele was due to give birth on December 23 but went into labour early on January 1. “We arrived at hospital around 7am and were told there hadn’t been a New Year baby born yet,” she says. Shortly after, at 9.53am Toloa was born, weighing in at 9lb 6oz. “We’ve named him after my husband’s father who has passed away,” Mele smiles. Toloa’s four sisters Vivi (12), Funaki (11), Grace (6), Wima (4) and brother (Neto) were

‘so excited’ to meet the new addition. “They were all so excited to meet their brother. He’s our second boy of six children and I think he will be the last,” she says. Mele and Lopini thank midwife Mahana Vardey for her care throughout the pregnancy, as well as Rhianne Lamb and Jenn Laing who were present for the delivery. “Everyone has been wonderful so thank you to everyone, including my family for Baby Toloa has no idea what the fuss was all their support.” about on the day of his birth.

Total fire ban starts tomorrow By Cathie Bell A total fire ban in both urban and rural Marlborough is in place from 8am tomorrow. A Prohibited Fire Season will be in place for Blenheim, Renwick, Seddon, Ward, Havelock and Picton from 8.00am this Thursday 11 January. The ban complements the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Prohibited Fire Season for all areas of Marlborough and Kaikoura, which has also been declared from this Thursday. Marlborough District Council emergency services manager Brian Paton says people are not permitted to light any fire in the open air. “Wood-fired or charcoal barbecues, braziers, incinerators, umu and hangi are not allowed, nor is any open fire of any kind. “A gas barbecue is the only outdoor cooking method that is permitted.” Brian says the next few weeks through summer and into early autumn are usually the hottest, driest time of the year, so Marl-

borough is entering peak fire risk period. “Although we have had some welcome rain recently, it’s not enough to significantly reduce the hazard level.” All fires in the open are covered by the ban. That includes enclosed incinerators, pizza ovens, camp fires, including those at Department of Conservation reserves, Chinese lanterns and fireworks. “When using a gas barbecue, leave plenty of clear space around it and shelter it from wind gusts. Make sure there is nothing near it that could catch fire. “People also need to be careful with chainsaws, mowers, harvesters and grinders. “Even driving a vehicle through long grass can start a fire – this should only be done during the cool of the morning or evening. Even then, care still needs to be taken.” The ban will remain in place until the elevated fire risk eases – that requires lower temperatures and some persistent rainfall, Brian says.

Walter Scott built his early passion in visual arts into a career in photography, before adopting pastels as a favoured art medium. He now works in both pastel and oils. The late Robert (Bob) Warren’s early study at Canterbury College School of Art in the 1930’s was curtailed by World War II, and his love of oil painting was not fully realised until his retirement and in his more senior years.

Beekeepers share skills at regular workshops

By Bill McElhinney The Marlborough Beekeepers Association ran its first workshop for 2018 on Sunday at the club hives in the Community Gardens in Budge Street. “We aim to help people learn about the art and craft of beekeeping and to share that information with others so that they can become skilled beekeepers,” Silke Powell, association secretary, says. A bee photo competition run by the association was won by Julia Mayo with a photo of a bee on a rata flower. Beekeeping is a popular hobby in Marlborough, Silke says. “It’s really taken off in recent years. We had about 34 people turn up at the workshop. It gives hobby beekeepers the opportunity to learn from those more experienced. “If you are interested in beekeeping, or want to get to know other local beekeepers then you are welcome to

come along to our events,” Silke says. “We hold workshops most months, usually on a Sunday afternoon. Practical hands-on sessions take place at the hives in the Marlborough Community Gardens, off Budge Street, and we sometimes use other venues.” Most hobby beekeepers have two or three hives, Silke says, which will usually provide more than enough honey for them. Hives are also kept to assist with pollination. Diseases such as the varroa mite and American foulbrood have proved a challenge for beekeepers. “Hives have to be registered, checked and certified to help combat these diseases,” Silke says. Marlborough beekeepers are looking forward to hosting the national conference for beekeepers, to be held in the ASB Theatre in Blenheim at the end of July. About 800 people are expected to attend.

Land Information New Zealand has teamed up with IXSURVEY and Discovery Marine Limited to remap the seabed between Kaikōura and Cape Campbell following the earthquake in November 2016. “For the next few months we’ll have two boats sailing round the coast using state-of-the-art multi-beam sonars to map nearly 35,000 hectares of the seabed,” says Annette Hadler, Hydrographic Surveyor. The sonar uses a pulse of sound to measure the water depth across a wide swath of the seabed, showing the shape of the seafloor and revealing rocks and reefs that may be a hazard to those sailing in the area.

Six patients at Wairau Hospital remain in isolation with gastroenteritis and two staff members are still on sick leave with the illness. Hospital Operations Manager and assistant director of nursing Joyce Forsyth says robust infection prevention practice is in place at the hospital to help prevent the spread of gastroenteritis. Tests are also being conducted to confirm whether the cause is norovirus. She says that gastroenteritis is highly infectious, very easily spread from person to person.

Blenheim man Dennis Hall has never grown Christmas lilies before and was surprised when these ones bloomed to see the colour they were. “I inherited the bulbs from my neighbour, Ralph Davies, when he moved to Nelson,” Dennis says. “I just watered them and looked after them and up popped an orange one and the other is a deep red - almost black. “I always thought Christmas lilies were just white but I guess there must be different varieties. They are lovely, though.”

By Cathie Bell The state highway between Picton and Christchurch is open again, but authorities are warning travellers the road needs care and planning, because of delays with roadworks resuming and weather. The road was closed last weekend when big seas pushed temporary sea wall blocks onto the road at Ohau Point. The New Zealand Transport Agency says plan ahead and allow extra time is the message as work ramps up on both routes between Picton and Christchurch from this week – via Kaikoura and via the Lewis Pass. Agency journey manager Tresca Forrester says State Highway One through Kaikoura will be a noticeably different drive compared to the Christmas/New Year period when crews were stood down to take a well-deserved break and help traffic flow well over the busiest time. “From this week, our crews will be back on the ground starting work and by 15 January the work programme will be back in full delivery which will have a

significant effect on the coastal corridor. It’s a balancing act to schedule work to have a minimal effect on travel time while also ensuring the work gets done. “Drivers should expect it to take at least five-and-a-half hours to six hours to drive between Picton and Christchurch on SH1, but should allow plenty of extra time in case of delays.” The two most earthquake-damaged sections will be closed at night (8.30pm to 7am) as a safety precaution. North of Kaikoura this is between Clarence and Mangamaunu and south of Kaikoura between Goose Bay and Peketa. There will also be multiple worksites in these sections during the day operated by Stop/Go traffic managers with a big increase in construction traffic. The alternate route through the Lewis Pass remains a reliable option for travel between Picton and Christchurch. However roadworks on this alternate route will also begin mid-January as long daylight hours and warm dry weather helps new seal set properly.

Mary Poppins players will be flying high By Bill McElhinney Liz McKay never thought much about flying until she visited the Blenheim ASB Theatre. “I walked in to the main auditorium with my husband, Greg Simpson, and looked up at the ceiling and thought: ‘Oh my goodness, am I going up there!’” Liz, a seasoned performer, has the lead role in the Blenheim Musical Theatre’s centenary production, Mary Poppins, to be staged in April. In one of the scenes from the show, Mary Poppins flies across the London rooftops, thanks to her trusty magical umbrella. Liz will be attached to a special harness to fly through the theatre auditorium. And Spencer Kingi, who plays Bert in the show, will also be walking upside down across the ceiling using similar technology. “We’ll be bringing in specialists from the North Island to help us stage the flying scenes,” production manager Neville Patchett says. “This is the biggest and most costly production we’ve ever done. “It’s costing $340,000 to stage the show, and it will be spectacular.”

Auditions were held in August last year and the cast of around 40 has been rehearsing since September, with a break over the Christmas-New Year period. “We will also have about 120 people involved in staging, wardrobe, orchestra and other roles,” Neville says. The show is being directed by Duncan Whiting with musical direction by Kevin Moseley, choreography Jeannie Mark and vocal direction Samantha Baxter. The lead roles are: Mary Poppins, Liz McKay; Bert, Spencer Kingi; Winifred Banks, Racheal Kenyon; Jane Banks, Sophie Boyt and Grace Straker; Michael Banks, Rowan McKay-Simpson and Elliot Ham. In the show, jack-of-all-trades Bert invites us into the dysfunctional home of the Banks family in London, 1910. The spoiled Banks children, Jane and Michael, have sent yet another nanny packing. Their father works constantly and their mother is distracted by her social calendar, so the children are largely undisciplined. Then the magical Mary Poppins flies in with a combination of magic and whimsy to transform the lives of the children and the adults.

Glenys Parsons’ winning entry. The Andersons won 2nd place. Rudolph won 3rd place.

The actual winners in the Wairau Valley…. By Cathie Bell Wairau Valley people are celebrating their creativity with the winners of the annual letterbox decorating competition being announced. The Sun jumped the gun last month by publishing entries as the winners, which as Wairau Valley Residents’ Association spokeswoman Angela Woolf says caused some confusion. “As much as we love seeing our letter boxes in the paper and spreading the fun of Christmas, we were perplexed at the claim that they were the winning letter boxes as the

winner had not been announced. “Your article had many people thinking they had won the competition when in fact they had not.” So to clarify the situation, The Sun is happy to publish a correction and the photos of the actual winners. It’s a popular competition and winner Glenys Parsons has notched up her third win in four years with her Grinch-themed letterbox. Second was the Anderson family, with a planking Santa, and third was Tina and Amanda with Rudolph and his red nose.

Holiday photo competition opens By Cathie Bell The first entries in the summer holiday photo competition being offered by The Sun newspaper, the Marine Farming Association, and the Marlborough District Council have been received and they celebrate Marlborough’s coastal environment. This year’s competition has a twist with two categories – as well as the usual scenic summer holiday photos, there is an extra category, spurred by council’s coastal scientist Dr Steve Urlich’s experiences on the water. The new category is for photos of people collecting rubbish found on beaches around Marlborough. Steve says that he was encouraged by reading about marine farmers’ efforts during their recent Big Day Out beach clean-up throughout much of the Sounds, as reported by The Sun last month.

He and Marine Farming Association president Jono Large are keen to see rubbish picked up and removed from the coastal marine environment, and the council and Marine Farming Association are sponsoring this year’s photo competition to reward people doing that. The competition is open now, and each Friday for four weeks, starting from Friday January 19 and running until February 9, there will be a weekly prize of a $50 lunch voucher at Jay’s Cafe for the photo judged the best scenic photo and another voucher for the photo of the strangest litter picked up. The photos will be judged by a panel including Marlborough mayor John Leggett, Steve, Jono, and someone from the Sun. Pictured are the three first entries received. Little owl on Rapaura vineyard post.

Local vineyard owl Reader Helen Garbett sent us this picture of a little New Zealand owl which was seen on vineyard off Rapaura Road. The little owls are widespread throughout the drier open country of the northern South Island and are often seen perched out in the open in the late afternoon. The little owls were introduced to New Zealand from Germany between 1906 and 1910, with the intention that they would help control the numbers of small

introduced birds, which were becoming a pest in grain and fruit crops. However, there is no evidence that they have been effective in this. The little owls mainly eat insects (particularly beetles, also caterpillars, earwigs and moths); they eat small mammals, small birds, lizards and frogs. They mainly hunt at dawn and dusk, often feeding on the ground.

Licor 43 is a Spanish liqueur made from citrus and fruit juices, flavoured with vanilla and other aromatic herbs and spices for a total 43 different ingredients. It is 31%abv, 62 proof and is a light bodied, sweet liqueur. In colour it is yellow tinged with a touch of gold. The aroma is sharp, warm, and complex, with vanilla up front; and then tangy sweet fruit, spices, and an aged rum-like presence. The flavour is similar to the aroma; vanilla, complex intermixed spices, tangy fruits, and hints of citrus, carried by a flavour similar to aged rum.

I really like it, I like the layout of the whole area.

It’s nice, but it would be even better if there were more cafes and restaurants spread along the river.

It’s lovely, but a bit more shade would be nice. It can get very hot down here.

I love it. I sat down here and had breakfast this morning.

It’s the first time I have visited here and I think this area is very nice. I really like it.

It’s my first time down here and I love it. It’s really nice and peaceful.

Trout response Dear Ed, Predictably, in reaction to my initial blurb, the Fish & Game apologists employed misleading spiel to justify their sectarian agenda, particularly beguiling being their self-portrayal as a social/community/environmental service, reinforcing the perception that a fishing-rod, ‘t’is nought but a thin stick with a jerk at each end’. Trout fishing is, of course, to be encouraged, embracing the premise that vermin removed from the ecosystem is a benefit. What is inexcusably stupid is the deliberate liberation of this culinary disappointment into the environment; what next - release a few thousand rabbits into the country-side so that youth can shoot them! Nineteenth century records describe the NZ Grayling in the multi-millions, blackening the rivers during migration especially on the West Coast-the last was seen in the early 1920s, trout predation the principal culprit in their extinction.

Several of the white-bait species such as the Giant Kokopu are at a critical level, the breeding adults in the high-country streams decimated by marauding trout. Coincidentally in December Forest & Bird disclosed that seventy-four percent of native fresh-water fish species are endangered, some critically. More recently the introduction of didymo polluting South Island rivers is attributed to a visiting trout fisherman so, once again, thanks F&G! Outrageous for a democracy is the fact that this private society has privileged legal, prosecutorial, and unaccountable managerial jurisdiction over the public amenity of fresh-water systems - it is a legislative anachronism whose revision is long overdue, such considerations properly being the province of publicly elected bodies, regional councils perhaps, responsible to the wider public. Dear Ed, Judging by the three days a week paper, (Marlborough Express) Marlburians have given up sport. There is no mention of any Marlborough sport - golf, cricket, tennis etc. Could it have anything to do with long time sporting editor Peter Jone’s departure? Pete did an excellent job. The editor is due to leave too. Nicola Coburn has done a fine job. The twin departures underline the stupidity of letting Fairfax

get a dominance on NZ’s newspapers. Corporates don’t give a stuff about the community and its people. If all this conjecture is wrong and Marlburians have given up sport overnight, we can look forward to chub, flab and obesity as we read our last remaining community paper ‘The Blenheim Sun.’ Come to think of it, what a great opportunity for the ‘Sun.’ Tubby Blenheim

Car joins backpacker on 10 year-trip By Cathie Bell Timm Scholz loves Marlborough… In fact he loves it so much that he has travelled here from his home town of Dingolfing in Bavaria 10 times. This year, to celebrate his 10th anniversary trip, he has shipped his beloved 1971 ‘E Type’ Series 3 V12 Jaguar so he can tour in style. Previously, he’s toured in what he calls a ‘backpacker’ car, but the retiree, who lives six months of the year one hour from Munich in BMW’s homebase, decided he would go through the lengthy process of bringing the car, that he restored over 20 painstaking years from what he terms as a ‘heap of junk’ that didn’t go to the beauty that it is now, to the other side of the world. Asked why he keeps coming back to New Zealand and to Marlborough, Timm waves his arms at the scenery surrounding the Linkwater holiday camp and says ‘it is obvious’ “The nature, the park, the people…I love it here.” He loves to camp as the cost is

reasonable and most parks have great kitchen, shower and toilet facilities….’all that I need’. “The tent is only for sleeping, I walk every day and get out and see the beautiful scenery”. Timm’s favourite places for tramping in Marlborough are the Mount Stokes walk and any of the tracks around St Arnaud. Would he bring his E type Jaguar back to NZ for his next trip? The answer is an emphatic “No”. For his 11th trip he will travel in a “backpacker car” again. It won’t be so much fun and he probably won’t turn as many heads, but he will be able to travel down gravel roads without worrying about doing damage to the meticulously restored underbelly of the car. When Timm leaves Smiths Farm Holiday Park he will travel west towards Murchison. From there he will visit friends in Karamea and then will head South to Fiordland where he will spend most of February before returning to Marlborough in March.

Blenheim second again in annual sunshine stakes By Bill McElhinney Pipped at the post again – but not by much! Blenheim has been beaten in the annual sunshine stakes by Richmond, which recorded a provisional total of 2632 hours of sunshine last year. Blenheim is in second place with 2604.5 hours, only 28.3 hours behind Richmond. Last month was a scorcher, the hottest December in 48 years. December 17 was the hottest day of the year, with a temperature of 31.3 degrees Celsius, Plant and Food scientist Rob Agnew says. The temperature topped 30C again on December 11, when 30.1 degrees was recorded. There were also quite a few months when it was drier than normal, Rob says.

There was below average rainfall in January, June, October, November and December. With a mean temperature of 18.7°C, December 2017 is the second warmest December on record for Blenheim for the 86 years from 1932 to 2017. The warmest on record is 1969 with a mean temperature of 18.8°C. The coldest day of the year was July 31, when the temperature dipped to minus 2C. There were also fewer ground frosts, 39, 13 fewer than the long term average of 52. “There are fewer frosts than usual,” Rob says. “There’s been a downward trend for some years now, and that’s a sign that the climate is warming. Our winters are warmer than they were 50 years ago.”

Harleen Apperley with three of her favourites: Rufus, Honeybunch and Camilla.

Bear collection keeps on growing By Bill McElhinney Grin and bear it? Harleen Apperley certainly does! It’s the bears, several dozen soft and cuddly ones in all shapes and sizes that bring a smile to Harleen’s face. Harleen, 78, is a resident at the Aberleigh Rest Home, and attends the Marlborough Stroke Club every fortnight. Several months ago at a Stroke Club meeting she was asked if she would like to have a couple of teddy bears. “I said ‘Yes please!’” Harleen says. Then she decided a few more would be nice, and before long she had started a collection. “People know I like them, so they give them to me,” Harleen says. “My daughter says I shouldn’t get any more, as I won’t have room for them, but I’ve still got a bit of space.”

Her favourite, and the biggest in her collection, is Honeybunch, which sits on her bed every night. “Honeybunch sort of takes the place of Gilbert, my late husband,” Harleen says. Gilbert was well-known as a long-time caretaker and groundsman at St Mary’s Catholic Church and School, and was also Marlborough rugby mascot Blenny the Beaver. “He passed away in August last year on our 48th wedding anniversary,” Harleen says. “I do miss him!” In the meantime Harleen hopes to add to her collection, some of which have been given names: Rufus, Snow and even a Camilla. But no one will take the place of Honeybunch. “He’ll always be the special one,” Harleen says.

Rarangi surf swim on again The Hipkins Cup Sea Swim, the annual event hosted by the Rarangi Surf Lifefsaving Club, is back again for another year. The swim is on Saturday January 13 and takes place along Rarangi beach about 300m north of the fire station. It takes swimmers across to the far entrance of Whites Bay before completing a zig zag back across the bay to the finish line. The swim celebrated its 50th event last year and the organisers hope they are now on the way to 100. So get your speedos out if you’re keen or grab that old wetsuit and dust off the goggles to make a splash in this years event.

Entries for the race can be done on the day from 11am at the car park north of the fire station. Entry fees are $10 per person. The swim will start around midday and conclude with prize giving and a barbeque put on by the Surf Club and the Masters Swimming Club. As a safety measure this year all competitors must wear a hi-viz swim cap. If you don’t have one there will be some available for $5 when you enter. For more information contact the surf club or Brendon Ferguson bf@hurunuicollege.school. nz or 0273031511.

By Cathie Bell Fourteen submissions have, been made on the councils gaming machine policy review, and hearings will be held in the new year. A council spokesman says people making five of the 14 submissions want to speak to their submissions, so there will be hearings, at a date yet to be confirmed next year. Of those 14 subm issions, five oppose the policy in full, seven support it in full, and two support it in part. The chairman of a ga m i ng industry group, Bruce Robertson, m a de a submission and asks the coun- Bruce Robertson cil to retain the status quo cap of 258 gaming machines and to adopt a policy that allows existing hospitality venues with gaming to relocate in the event of a fire or natural disaster, and when the owner wishes to move to new, modern premises. Bruce says the number of gaming venues in the Marlborough District has declined considerably. “In 2003, the Marlborough District had 30 gaming venues and 284 machines. “The Marlborough District currently has 16 gaming venues and 214 operational machines.” He warns that erosion of the community funding infrastructure was leading to more and more grant applications being declined, due to a lack of available funds for distribution. Clubs and community groups currently receive approximately $4 million a year from the gaming machines located in the district’s 16 gaming venues. Bruce says that as part of the policy review, the council has undertaken a risk profile assessment, which found the district is at ‘low risk’ and that ‘no restrictions’ on local gaming machines are warranted, given the small number of local people who sought help for problem gambling, the low expenditure on gambling per person, and the district’s ethnic makeup.

Primary cricket team seeks success in Nelson By Peter Jones Marlborough’s primary school rep cricketers have their eyes firmly on a top four finish at the South Island tournament which began in Nelson on Monday. The 12-strong Marlborough team travelled west with high expectations after producing promising results from a series of pre-tournament encounters. Coach Mike Hood said that, although the team faced a series of demanding games, ‘on their day, they were capable of beating any other team’.

Rather than relying on a couple of star individuals, Marlborough has together a well-balanced team who work hard for each other, especially in the field. Mike says they have a well-balanced bowling attack, headed by medium pacers Hunter Ruffell, Sam MacDonald and Ollie Shore, plus promising left arm spinner Tim Petrie. He feels the Nelson wickets will suit their bowling stocks, which included five players capable of bowling spin. The batting effort is being led

by hard-hitting opener Max Armstrong, wicket-keeper Cooper Roberts, who scored a century against Nelson in a warm-up game, Sam, and Ollie with depth all the way down the order. There is also experience in the side. Cooper and Ollie will be attending their third South Island tournament, while Hunter, Sam, Jack Kelly and Tim will be backing up from the 2016-17 event in Timaru when they finished sixth. This year’s event is being played at Greenmeadows from Monday through to Friday. Marlbor-
