No-waste nomads

By Bill McElhinney Hannah Blumhardt and Liam Prince are travelling the country talking rubbish. Imagine never having to put out the rubbish. That’s the reality for Hannah and Liam, who started living in Wellington in 2015 without creating rubbish. The couple put out just one wheelie bin a year of paper for recycling, and one crate of glass every 18 months. Continued on page 2 Rubbish Trippers Hannah Blumhardt and Liam Prince. Hannah is holding a Keep Cup reusable takeaway coffee cup and reusable cloth bags full of food bought from bulk stores; Liam with homemade Vegemite-type spread. Photo by Rexine Hawes.

Zero waste a great challenge Continued from page 1 Disposable plastic is banned from the house and because they’re vegans they find it easy to put food scraps on the compost, which in turn feeds the garden. How do they do it? You just need to be organised, Hannah says “We take our own bags and containers when we go shopping. We use plastic containers for takeaways – nobody has ever minded putting sushi in our container.” They take their own glass bottles to

stores where they can be filled with beer on tap. “We do try to limit our wine consumption so we don’t end up with too many bottles,” Hannah says. “But we store emergency water supplies in old wine bottles and use them to store home-made stock and ginger beer. “A year ago we began talking to groups about how to reduce rubbish,” Hannah says. “After countless people told us that we had inspired them to reduce their

waste, we decided to go full-time and take our zero waste presentations on the road for a year! We kicked off at the beginning of Plastic Free July last year.” The no-waste nomads are now on the Rubbish Trip, touring the country to encourage others to follow suit. “We do believe most people want to do something,” Liam says. “Even if you don’t have a goal of zero waste, everyone can do small things to reduce their waste footprint.”

“We tell people to think about the five Rs before they buy,” Hannah says. “Refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and rot (compost). Recycling is quite far down the list as it is really only a partial solution.” Hannah and Liam will be giving free talks about zero waste in the Rai Valley School library at 6pm on February 13; the Envirohub in Picton at 7pm on February 15; and at the Haven Cafe in Redwoodtown at 2.30pm on February 18.

Farmers store staff enjoy a get-together By Bill McElhinney Saturday’s Farmers Co-op reunion was a step back in time for former Blenheim store employees. Around 60 former staff from the Farmers Cooperative department store got together on Saturday at the Clubs of Marlborough to renew old friendships and recall old times. During its heyday in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, the store had a large staff and sold everything from groceries to stock supplies. “We were a one-stop shop,” reunion organiser Colin Geertson says. Colin joined Farmers as a clerk in the stock and station section in 1961

and worked his way up to stock office manager before retiring in 1989. “The Farmers Co-op dealt in real estate, insurance, stock and grain, motorcycles, hardware, furniture, fashion, home appliances, china – we even had a cafe,” Colin says. “We had a great team,” former long-serving staff member Dave Aberhart says. “The firm took care of everyone, they looked after the staff. “The farmers and their wives would come to town and the men would go and see the stock and grain folk while their wives would do the shopping in the grocery and other departments.

We had everything they wanted in one store. “Then they would have lunch in our cafeteria before they went home.” Viv Broughton and Margaret Thynne were among many young women who joined Farmers when they left school. “We started our working lives there,” Margaret says. “I really liked the job and they were a great crowd to work for. “We even had our own social sports teams,” Viv says. “We had netball teams and rugby teams. “One year we had men versus women team competition and the men beat us in netball, but then we beat them

at rugby!” Many of the former staff remember the day the Queen Street store was destroyed in a spectacular mid-afternoon blaze on a scorching day on January 10, 1979. The blaze was so hot it even melted coins in nearby parking meters. After that, the staff in various sections were scattered throughout the town before the co-op built again on Queen Street. Eighteen months later, it took over retail company Haywrights and became Farmers Haywrights before Farmers Trading Company bought all South Island Haywrights stores in 1982.

Mooring effects studied The Marlborough District Council and the Cawthron Institute are studying the effects of the more than 3000 swing moorings in the Marlborough Sounds. Marlborough District Council Coastal Scientist Dr Steve Urlich says these could be causing significant damage to fragile types of living seabed habitat when they are dragged along the sea floor. The typical mooring is an anchor, or concrete block, attached to a chain, and the report shows that the dragging of the ground chain can damage or destroy sensitive habitats. The Council will use the information in the Cawthron report along with information collected from the Queen Charlotte Sound multibeam seabed survey that will be completed in mid 2018. This survey will provide, for the first time, a picture of the effects of scour sweep marks in every bay in the Queen Charlotte.

Some of the artists taking part in the ‘le groupe’ exhibition which opened Saturday night and runs until February 18; Carolyn Pillans, Glen Waters, Bruce Fergus, Gerad Verkaaik and Steve Halton.

Group’s first exhibition in 12 years By Celeste Alexander A group of Marlborough artists which has been together for around 20 years opened an exhibition at the weekend at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery. The Artists of Marlborough have put together an exhibition titled ‘le groupe’ featuring everything from paintings and

ceramic ware, through to wood and bone work. Member Elsie Hall says it’s the first exhibition the group has held together for 12 years. “We are all artists with home studios that are open to the public by arrangement, so it’s opportunities like this that we can present ourselves to the public,” she says. The exhibition is made up of

‘mixed mediums’ which make the exhibition unique and interesting,” Elsie adds. “It’s fairly diverse with wall and floor space used and we have some very well known artists involved. “We have the likes of Gerard Verkaaik with his sculptures, Bruce Fergus with his wood, bone and wire work and Glen Waters

with her beautiful ceramic ware. “We also have Carolyn Pillans who is world acclaimed with her glass. Her work is superb,” she says. Other artists include Brian Badcock, Clarry Neame, Steve Halton, Brian Baxter, Joanna Dudson Scott, Marion Trought and Shirley O’Connor. The exhibition will run through to February 18. PBA

Moon a no-show Marlborough people missed out on last week’s ‘super blue blood moon’ when the sky was covered in clouds. The astronomical event was visible across the parts of northern New Zealand where the sky was clear, and people got a good look at the moon which was full for the second time in a month, closer to the earth, and in full eclipse.

Yacht club hit hard by storm By Cathie Bell Super moon and high tides caused havoc in several parts of the country, and once again Queen Charlotte Yacht Club was attacked by tides and waves. Holes were punched in the walls, floorboards shifted and equipment thrown about. Gravel was thrown high up on the beach and carparks. Queen Charlotte Yacht

Club rear commodore Christel Hopkins says a quick clean-up is needed, as it’s only two weeks before the club hosts the Interislander national Optimists regatta on the weekend of Feburary 17 and 18. About 180 sailors will be participating when that regatta is in full swing in the waters of Picton Harbour. Christel says plans for a new yacht club are well

advanced. The club has already obtained the resource consent for the new water sports base at Shelley Beach, she says. Members are now in the last stages of funding for the venture. “Hopefully this won’t be long as I’m not sure how many blue moons it can handle.”

Rebekah Nafe presents at the YES information evening last week.

Call out for youth By Cathie Bell The Marlborough Youth Trust is looking for more young people to take part in this year’s Youth in Emergency Services programme. The trust has employed Rebekah Nafe as this year’s YES co-ordinator, and she says she has a unique perspective on the benefits of the programme, as she did the first course back in 2007. Then, she was living in the Bay of Plenty when the Uniformed Services Programme started as a pilot. “The Government has got on board now and funds it all over New Zealand.” Then, it was the professional services – police, defence, and fire service – involved, but now it also includes voluntary organisations such as St John, surf lifesaving, and search and rescue as well. “It’s a really cool programme.” Rebekah and her husband moved to

Marlborough about three years ago, and have been working with youth through the Baptist church. She is doing some study this year, as well as working on the YES programme, a parttime job. There has been a good response from young people looking to do the course this year, she says, with 18 people coming to an information evening last Thursday. “We’re looking to have 24 people on the course, so there’s room for a few more.” It’s the third time it’s been run in Marlborough, and previous participants Laurie Duncan and Martinett Grouws spoke about it at the information evening, with both saying they cannot recommend it highly enough. The course starts on February 17, and application forms can be collected from the trust’s office in Arthur Street.

Founder of the Great New Zealand Tractor Trek, Phil Aish, will be leading a cavalcade of tractors, jeeps and trucks, stopping at Blenheim on February 20. Photo provided.

Valid Thursday 8th February

Tractors will soon roll into town By Celeste Alexander Blenheim will be rolling out the red carpet in over a week’s time for a calvalcade of tractors, jeeps and trucks that will be passing through on a journey to raise funds and awareness for Hospice. The Great New Zealand Tractor Trek will soon be on its way and stopping in Blenheim on February 20. Locals are invited to welcome the trekkers on their arrival and check out the tractor lineup at Hospice Marlborough between 4.30-5.30pm. Mayor John Leggett will also be joining the welcome party to show his support for Hospice.

The Great NZ Tractor Trek will be led by founder Phil Aish who did a similiar trek in 2016 to honour a promise he made to his wife Jannice in her last weeks of life. Phil and Janice wanted to thank Hospice for the ‘immeasurable’ support provided to the family during Janice’s last days, and when discussing a trek, Janice told Phil to ‘do it’. “You can’t put a price on having the burden of care lifted off your shoulders when someone close to you has a life-limiting illness,” he says. The trek is travelling from Bluff up to Cape Reinga between February 12 and

March 9, and stopping in various towns on their way north. “I want other families to know that these amazing services are being provided in their own communities so they can have an opportunity to acknowledge and support them in any way they can,” Phil says. Phil, along with supporters, friends and family hope to collect at least $100,000 which will go directly to Hospice services. People can support the work of Hospice by donating to the Tractor Trek at www.givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/the-great-nz-tractortrek-2018.

Discover the art of woodcut printing By Celeste Alexander The Marlborough Art Society is hosting a series of summer workshops where local and out-of-town artists share their skills in a range of mediums. Wellington-based artist Sheyne Tuffery is returning to Blenheim with his very popular ‘Woodcut Printing’ workshop, set for March 17-18. Well-known for the murals he created on the Health Hub building on Charles Street, this will be the second time Sheyne brings his woodcut printing skills to Blenheim. “I’m really looking forward to it. I enjoy the process of people getting into it and seeing their enjoyment,” he says. The workshop is very much a hands-on approach to creating prints using wood blocks which participants handcarve to create patterns and images for prints. “It’s quite an easy way to get into printing as you don’t have to be great at drawing, but rather methodical. Plus you don’t need to come in with ideas as they will come,” he says. Participants will begin by making background mosaic patterned prints from printing one single block then printing a silhouette block over the top of that. There are various skills learned including chisel techniques, shortcuts, positive/negative space, using background and foreground, key blocks, relief printing techniques, rolling ink, using the press, registration, reduction printing, making clean prints, print etiquette

I should be finished painting the house, and if it’s a nice day, we’re going to Brayshaw Park.

Looking after my newborn son, with the grandparents.

We love speedway in our house so we will be working on the race car, watching the teams champs, BBQ with friends and enjoying some Marlborough wine.

We spend time as a family, chillax, and try to catch up with friends. The last relax before the busy year ahead!

We’re probably going down the Sounds.

Waitangi Day is when we respect the Maori people, their history and culture. I don’t do anything special but we need local area events for the public.

Salmon deaths Dear Ed, The deaths of salmon and the dumping of dead fish by New Zealand King Salmon at the rubbish dump is a disgrace. If it is disease, no way do we want salmon farming in our Sounds. If it’s warmer water, well salmon farming should not be in the Sounds. Either reason, salmon farming should not be in the Sounds, full stop! Chinook Blenheim

Global Warming Dear Ed, I cannot get a grip on the climate change/ global warming policies in Marlborough. Government with Shane Jones at the helm want to plant 100 million trees a year. Most will be pines planted for carbon trading money making. The result will be monocultures of pines. Yet while they are being planted new vineyards are proceeding apace. To make way for new vineyards, established, very effective

wind break sturdy shelter belt trees, often 50 or more years old are felled. Added to the folly is a monoculture of grapes. The Marlborough District Council doesn’t appear to have much control over stately urban trees being felled either. It doesn’t stack up environmentally, aesthetically, or for combating global warming. Seal missing in action Dear Ed, Just wondering what happened on 17th, 18th and 19th January 2018? A notice was left in letterboxes that new seal was to be laid on those days in Ida Street and to keep vehicles off the roadsides. In future. all brochures or notices will end up in the bin. No reasons have been given why the sealing was not carried out. But the way the road is may be better than having new seal laid for those speed heads to race up and down on. It is the problem of living on a pass-through street. D Simmons Blenheim

The heat is on Dear Ed, The hottest January in Marlborough in 87 years; fierce fires in scorching weather; storm surges destroying roads and houses; flash flooding claiming lives. Climate change may already have had an irreversible impact on New Zealand’s natural systems and the effects are likely to worsen, according to a report released last year by the Ministry for the Environment. The data showed conclusively that temperatures have already risen by one degree in New Zealand, and this will have an impact on the economy, biodiversity and health. And, of course, coastal property values and insurance premiums. Yet there still seem to be climate change skeptics in our midst, no doubt adopting the John Key approach. “Let’s just ignore the problem and hope it goes away. “She’ll be right, folks!” Time to get a grip, New Zealand. If we don’t join forces to tackle this issue we will all pay the price. Concerned Kiwi Blenheim

Snags and neighbours Woodbourne hosts event to build community relations By Celeste Alexander Who are your neighbours and who needs, or can give support in the hour of need? This was something that Woodbourne residents found out last Saturday during what was dubbed the ‘Woodbourne Summer Bash’. The event was put together by an organising group brining residents together for a street barbecue. The idea to host the event came after Neighbourhood Support Marlborough was approached by RNZAF Base Woodbourne community facilitator Claudia Ayling last year. She had identified the need to start a NSM group in Woodbourne with the hope of building stronger relations between Defence and non-Defence residents. After a community meeting was held it was decided to host the street barbecue, Neighbourhood Support co-ordinator Sharaine Steenberg says. “At the meeting it was decided that something fun would be a

great way to pull people together. Bringing people together over kai is a very good way to build community connection and spirit, which is exactly what happened. “It was a great day for those who came along,” she says. The collective working group organising the event will take on the role of co-ordinating the Neighbourhood Support group in Woodbourne. The event was held in conjunction with Neighbourhood Support, fire services and Marlborough Community Patrol and featured bouncy castles, a barbecue, JJ’s food truck, Tanysha Cox’s coffee cart and Mr Whippy ice cream. For Woodbourne residents wanting to be involved with the community there will be another community meeting on February 12 at the Woodbourne Community Centre at 6.30pm. Education Headed for success! In a world where upskilling and education is often the deciding factor for personal success, there’s one business that’s doing its part to provide real world learning for people wanting to learn while they earn in 2018! The Barbican Training Centre in partnership with Te Wananga o Aotearoa celebrates its sixteenth year offering local practical training programmes for business owners and individuals looking to get ahead. These programmes are designed to help students succeed on their chosen

path – all for FREE at our Nelson and Blenheim locations. Barbican owner, Susan Piket says, “It’s not about passing exams – this is real world learning. You can take the knowledge you learn and apply it directly to your situation giving you instant results that help you achieve your goals. “Over the past decade, many have started or improved their businesses; others have successfully developed personal investment plans.” Most people are juggling work, business and home life so Barbican’s

programmes are designed to suit busy people, with evening and morning options. “I really enjoyed the friendly atmosphere, helpful staff and connecting with like-minded people”, says Janine Smith, a former Barbican scholar. “The results I have achieved never would have happened without the amazing resources, knowledge and support I have gained.” To make 2018 your year, call us now on 03-547 6138 or visit us at www. barbicantc.com.

School year begins without national standards “It is great that schools across the country will begin the 2018 year free from the national standards millstone which has created so much anxiety,” Whetu Cormick, President of the New Zealand Principals’ Federation (NZPF) says. The new Government announced in December last year that national standards would no longer be a requirement. Rather, the Minister said that he wanted schools to continue to report clearly to parents twice a year about the progress

their young people have made in all areas of the curriculum, not just in reading writing and maths. “We were quick to let all school principals share in this news, and also sent out the Ministry’s announcement and links to assessment tools and resources,’ he said. “Before and during the national standards era, schools used a variety of assessment tools to measure learning, including learning progression frameworks, e-asTTle, tools for learners with diverse

needs and PAT tests, amongst others and teachers have always reported to parents on the progress of their young people’s learning. “What is so liberating about taking national standards away is that we can now focus on the wider curriculum, without having to obsess about national standards, and choose the assessment tools that best fit our own school contexts, ‘ he says.

Education How to choose subjects/classes Unsure if the subjects you have chosen are the right pathway for your career? Here are some tips. Step 1: Work out what subjects you enjoy. Ask yourself: • Which subjects do I like doing now? • Which subjects am I interested in doing next year, that I haven’t already studied? • What do I like doing outside school (eg playing music, helping people, thinking creatively)? Do any subjects include these activities? Step 2: Work out what subjects you are good at. Ask yourself: • Which subjects am I strongest in? • What subjects do others say I am good at? Step 3: Find out what subjects you need for your future career ideas. • Still unsure what career would suit you?

Remember, it’s OK if you’re unsure what you want to do in future, but studying a broad range of subjects will keep your career options open. • Keeping up with English, maths and at least one science subject is a good place to start. Step 4: Make a checklist. Have you: • Checked your subjects are approved for University Entrance, if you plan to go to university – (NZQA website - approved subjects)? • Talked over your choices with your parents and whanau? • Talked to your teachers and careers advisers? • Talked to Careers New Zealand advisers if you need more help? Call 0800 222 733 or chat online.

Our boarding hostel, Clarice Johnstone House, is a very important part of this. It offers excellent accommodation for up to 150 students, from New Zealand and overseas. This accommodation provides quality for our young women but is priced competitively. For many of our boarders, there are significant opportunities for them to be involved in sporting and cultural activities that would not otherwise be available to them. Our boarding students are part of a very large family, proactively supported by our senior students through a wide variety of student led activities. Nelson College for Girls has a strong house system and all of our boarders are members of the same house, Whangamoa.

They are passionate participants in all house activities in the school and revel in the ‘purple’ house succeeding well. Our Year 9 – 12 students live in Clarice Johnstone House while our Year 13 students are in the Levels building. This modern accommodation provides them with a more independent living experience, while still ensuring our most senior students play a pivotal role in creating the family atmosphere of the boarding community. Family inspiration Mother and daughter Monique and Sharon Gemmell have achieved so much in their academic studies that some might say they are an inspiration. Monique and Sharon were both mothers at a young age and both struggled in their own rights, but with the support of their whanau they have become successful businesswomen. In 2007 they both began their Masters of Maori Studies with Te Whare Wananga O Awanuiarangi which they will graduate from in April, as well as completing a Masters in Education at Victoria University. In addition to this Monique and Sharon are enrolled in the Professional Doctoral in Indigenous Advancement and Development and are currently completing their first year. For Monique education is a life-long process, something she makes her five children aware of. “Education doesn’t just stop once you’ve finished college, getting the tohu, for me, is really about complet-

ing what I started,” she said. For Sharon studying alongside her daughter “strengthens our relationship”. “As we go through the programme the impact builds upon our children, grandchildren and my great grandchildren, and our driving force has made the family more aware of the importance of education,” she said. Monique and Sharon both work at the Koru Institute of Training and Education, a private training establishment in Blenheim.

Ask anyone what their favourite thing is about summer dining, and most would probably say ‘enjoying the seasonal produce’. This is the time of year where produce really blooms. Fresh berries, herbs and summer vegetables... all things that make dishes colourful, flavoursome and delicious. Many local restaurants have, or are in the process of, rollling out their summer menus with new and exciting combinations ready to excite the palate. Introducing the Sun’s ‘Summer Dining’ lineup. Chateau Marlborough: There are some really exciting things happening at Quench Restaurant and Wine Bar including a new menu that provides an affordable, upscale experience to be enjoyed in a relaxed setting. Nestled within Chateau Marlborough’s 5-star luxury accommodation, the restaurant has three delectable menus to choose from including breakfast, light meals and the newly launched A-La-Carte dinner menu. Enjoy the indoor/outdoor flow and on a beautiful summer’s day or evening, sit by the pool and enjoy your meal and drinks. Mrs Vercoe’s Diner: This retro Americana themed diner with a kiwi twist opened its doors last year. The menu is very reflective of owner Becky Vercoe’s taste and personality and features bold flavours. From extreme donuts, loaded milkshakes, big breakfasts and of course her delectable burgers, there’s something to tempt everyone.

Dine in on the comfortable booth style seating or take away. Lemongrass: The Lemongrass restaurant on Maxwell Road has created a menu that puts the best of Asia on a plate. Starring dishes with a traditional yet modern twist on Thai and Vietnamiese cuisine, The Lemongrass has focused on fresh, lean and green. Café 50-81: The lure of handcrafted dumplings, gourmet pies and other tempting treats brings in a steady stream of customers to the Main Street café. The breakfast and lunch menus provide a delectable range of cooked-to-order meals, and the range of mouthwatering gourmet pies are sure to please. Herzog: Delicious casual food can be enjoyed in the stylish Bistro. Enjoy ‘al fresco’ dining in summer under the dappled light of clipped Plane trees within magnificent Mediterranean-style gardens. A feast for all senses - freshly prepared food from garden to plate, hand-crafted fine wines, caring service and stunning grounds evoke a Mediterranean lifestyle under the Marlborough sun. Biddy Kates Cafe and Bar: Amid renovations throughout the Irish bar, a new outdoor dining area with access from Alfred Street was built and opened last year. A popular spot to sit and soak up the sun while enjoying coffee, drinks and meals. “Come down and see it for yourself!”

Earthquake help to continue By Cathie Bell The Marlborough Primary Health Organisation has secured more funding to keep offering help to people affected by the Kaikoura earthquake, as a ‘crunch time’ approaches. PHO chief executive Beth Tester says there is ‘building stress and anxiety in the community’ about work around repairing earthquake-damaged houses and insurance claims. She says the organisation is working with the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and the Ministry of Health to reallocate $100,000 set aside for the All Right campaign- $100k. “It is felt that Marlborough earthquake recovery has moved past the need for the intensive All Right programme and we have already implemented many of the programme themes.” Instead, the money will continue the health navigator roles for another six months, provide more psychology support for brief intervention counselling, and continue the GP and nurse-led clinics for another six months, as requested by the community. These will run until the end of August, by when the majority of insurance claims ‘should’ be completed, Beth says. “There is a crunch now as people need to move out of their homes. We’re working with the Ministry for Social Development so we are ahead of the game when it’s winter and people have to get out of their homes immediately.” The community law centre is also seeking more funding to continue much-needed earthquake advice, Alistair Sowman says. He chairs both the PHO and the community law centre. PHO board member Helen Neame says another stress in the community is that people with insurance claim payments are having difficulty getting tradespeople to do the repair work.

Quake-damaged hockey turf needs repairing By Bill McElhinney The latest round of earthquake repairs to Marlborough amenities is under way, with the synthetic hockey turf at College Park Stadium out of action for a couple of months. An on-site survey has revealed that humps and hollows have appeared in the all-weather turf as a result of the 7.8 quake in 2016. The turf will now have to be rolled back so the ground movement can be assessed to establish the level of remediation needed to restore the playing surface. The hockey turf will be closed from February 14 until the end of April when the 2018 season is due to begin. But things may run a little late this year, Hockey Marlborough spokesman Andy Rowe says. “The first step is to lift the carpet and the asphalt beneath it and then to understand what damage has occurred. “Only then will we know what’s happened and how quickly it will be possible to make the repairs.

“So there’s a bit of uncertainty right now but we can’t do much about that until we know what we’re dealing with,” Andy says. The state-of-the-art WETT (Water-based Tiger Turf) was installed by the Marlborough District Council in 2009, bringing the park up to a standard which enabled Hockey Marlborough to host an international fixture

for the Black Sticks Women and Argentina in late 2015. The facility has been a big boost for the sport, and allowed Marlborough to be able to host national tournaments or single matches up to the highest level. The total cost of installing the turf was about $750,000. “Fulton Hogan will carry out the repairs and the cost will be met by

insurance,” Andy says. A key feature of the multi-purpose turf is that it can be used for a variety of sports such as summer soccer and touch, and the facility is used extensively by Marlborough Boys’ College, Andy says. “It’s not just a hockey facility. “The old sand-based surface that it replaced could really only be used for hockey.”

Kiwi motorsport star Hayden Paddon will swap his rally car for golf clubs, as the first celebrity announced to play in the ISPS Handa New Zealand Open in Queenstown on March 1 to 4. P a d d o n ’s 2 018 Wo r l d R a l l y Championship international schedule with Hyundai Motorsport offers him the chance to spend more time in New Zealand during March and April. As well as playing in the Open, he’ll be joining long-time Blenheim-based co-driver John Kennard and his Hyundai New Zealand Rally Team to contest several rounds of the 2018 New Zealand Rally Championship.

Run for fun The Marlborough Harriers Club summer runners event tomorrow is at Spring Creek. Meet at Spring Creek School, Ferry Road, at 6pm. Everyone is welcome.

All cyclists welcome By Cathie Bell This year’s Forrest Graperide is brought to you by the letter ‘E’, event spokesman Duncan Mackenzie jokes. The largest cycle event in the South Island, the Forrest Graperide will be run for the fourteenth time on April 7 this year, offering options from 42km to 202km for everyone from recreational cyclists to the best the country has to offer,. Duncan says the changing shape of cycling sees a huge number of recreational cyclists moving to E-bikes and the Graperide is adjusting to that as well. This is the third year an E-bike option has been offered to riders, he says. “As the first major cycle event to allow E-bikes we’ve solved any issues surrounding the mixing of technologies and look forward to welcoming E-bikers on the day. “The Taster route of 42km around the picturesque Kaituna-Tuamarina track is particularly suited to E-bike riders.” The event is inclusive, Duncan says, and

the people from the original Graperide 14 years ago, who are in their 60s now, still want to be part of the event. “Realistically, they can’t manage it on just a standard bike. We’ve got to include them. “They’re way past being a novelty. An e-bike is a really practical option for people.” Entries for this year’s event are up 40 per cent, Duncan says, which he puts down to the re-opening of State Highway One to Christchurch. After the road was closed by the November 2016 earthquake at Kaikoura, the event had a decline in rider numbers from Canterbury and further south in 2017. He says another ‘pleasing factor’ is the increasing number of women entering the event. “We’re around 20 per cent up on the number of women entering as compared to historical figures, that’s great for everyone”. GrapeRide organiser Duncan McKenzie is keen for E-bike riders to compete in the event.
