Wet, wet, wet

By Bill McElhinney Stay home and batten down the hatches. That’s the advice from various authorities as ex-cyclone Gita sweeps across the Top of the South. People are being asked to stay off the roads if they can as the heavy rain reduces visibility and causes surface flooding in many areas. Continued on page 2 Jordi King from HEB Construction was out attempting to clear drains as streets around Blenheim overflowed with floodwater. Inset: Austrian tourists Andres Fischer and Alexandra Schloegman were standing in the pouring rain hoping to hitch a ride to Nelson.

Emergency services on the alert Continued from page 1 Marlborough’s Emergency Operations Centre in Blenheim is monitoring the cyclone impacts. All Marlborough’s Civil Defence agencies met yesterday morning and the centre was being staffed until midnight last night. Welfare staff has been liaising with vulnerable communities and public awareness messages are being shared on marine radio, Brian FM and via Marlborough District Council’s communications channels, council communications manager Glyn Walters says. The Red Cross has welfare staff available and on call in Marlborough and Civil Defence is ready to open civil defence centres if required. The New Zealand Transport Agency closed State Highway

1 north and south of Kaikoura yesterday morning due to heavy rain, the risk of slips and storm waves washing over the road. The inland route via Waiua was also likely to be closed. The Cook Strait ferries are running as normal but the intercity bus service to Christchurch has been suspended and Blenheim airport is affected by flight cancellations; people should check with their airline. The heavy rain was causing slips, rapidly rising streams and flooding. People in the Marlborough Sounds, especially campers, trampers and boaties were being advised to leave the area. However, a group of Marlborough Boys’ College Year 9 students on a camp in Nydia Bay in the Marlborough

Sounds is planning to stay on despite the weather. As the rain poured down yesterday, holiday parks in the area were moving people in tents away from rivers and on to higher ground and more sheltered spots. Sportsgrounds and parks around the district were closed, including A&P Park, Athletic Park, Lansdowne Park, Oliver Park and the Renwick Domain. Road closures from high river levels were likely at the Pelorus across State Highway 6, Wakamarina Rd, Queen Charlotte track at Havelock, State Highway 1 beside the Para Swamp and State Highway 63 Wairau Valley. The rain was causing high flows in the Taylor, Opaoa, and lower Awatere tributaries, and the Opaoa fords were expected Betty Clatworthy braved the downpour to get to the to close overnight. gym at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000

DOC leading a trip to island’s wartime guns By Bill McElhinney The Marlborough Historic Society is leading a trip on Sunday to visit the World War II emplacements on Blumine/Oruawairua island. “This is part of DOC’s summer explorer programme.” DOC community ranger Wendy Sullivan says. “The island was an important defence location during World War II. “There are two gun emplacements on Blumine Island that were constructed during World War II because of fears of Japanese invasion. The plan was to establish a secure fleet anchorage for the US Navy. “The guns were ready for action by September 1942, by which time

the threat of enemy action had declined. “ Most of the day to day work on the island for the officers and men based there comprised of monitoring ship movements,” Wendy says. The trip involves a one-hour walk. The boat departs Picton at 9am and is expected back around 4:30pm. Bookings are required through the Marlborough Museum 03 5781712, $40 for Historic Society members and $50 for non-members. Those going on the trip will need to ensure, their shoes and clothing have been checked for mud, seeds and insects, Wendy says. Gear will be checked on the jetty and only clean gear can be taken on the island.

The Department of Conservation will lead a trip to historic gun placements on Blumine Island on Sunday.

Quilter’s striking work a winner

By Bill McElhinney Blenheim quilt artist Jean McLean’s striking work, ‘...and the Sky Danced’ has won a major award at a National Quilt Symposium. The symposium, held in the refurbished hall in the Christchurch Arts Centre in October, was attended by 1800 people. “It was an intense, week-long event,” Jean says. “There were workshops, one of which was tutored by Marlborough quilter Yvonne Roberts, who also had one of her works accepted for the show.” Another Marlborough quilter, Susanne Jensen, also had a quilt in the exhibition. “It was a good showing for Marlborough quilters,” Jean says. “Because of space limitations, fewer than half of the quilts entered for the symposium get accepted for hanging. “You are competing against some of the best in the world, with entries from as far away as Denmark, the United Kingdom and the United States.” Jean’s stunning quilt won the best landscape/pictorial category and then an award of excellence in the Best of Show category. The English-born artist first began traditional quilting in the 1970s, but an elbow injury meant she had to look at other ways of quilting rather than just hand-stitching. “I used to just sew by hand, but I broke my elbow and I was forced to stop for a while, and I missed quilting. So I started using a machine and I didn’t like it at first, but persevered and now I love it.”

Skin cancer checks The Marlborough Cancer Society’s Annual Skin Awareness Clinics return on Friday. The Blenheim clinic is being held at the Marlborough Convention Centre from 2pm to 7pm and the Picton clinic is at the Union Parish Church from 3pm to 7pm. The Skin Clinics promote awareness of skin health and are open to anyone. Entry is by donation. People attending will be seen by local doctors and visiting specialists.

Housing survey

Blenheim quilt artist Jean McLean with her award-winning work '...and the Sky Danced.'

Quilts such as Jean’s winning entry are the result of hundreds of hours of work. “I start off with a picture, something I might have photo shopped,” Jean says. “I print that out and then draw up a detailed pattern which shows

where all the different shapes and colours will be on the quilt. “Then I gather the materials, some of which are hand dyed, and begin to assemble the work. “Something like ‘...and the Sky Danced’ could take six months to make.”

Another of Jean’s quilts, ‘Silence,’ won an award for Best use of Colour. “This amused my son no end,” Jean says, “as the quilt is all done in shades of black, white and grey. But it was the way the shading was done that made it stand out.”

Hundreds of homes will soon be assessed as part of a nation-wide survey on housing quality. The survey, undertaken every two years, asks questions about the wellbeing of thousands of New Zealanders, and in 2018 will include questions around housing. An independent, trained assessor will conduct the one-hour assessment, which is completely voluntary, to collect data on the physical characteristics of the house, including things like building size, insulation, and heating as well as the general condition of the house.

Woman critical after head-on crash A 70-year-old Blenheim woman was flown to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition yesterday afternoon as a result of a head-on vehicle collision on State Highway 1 south of Blenheim. Two cars collided head on just south of the Redwood Pass road and State Highway 1 intersection, and a number of people were injured. The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was called to the scene

and the on-board intensive care paramedic assessed and treated the injured, assisted by St John road crews. After being extricated from the vehicle by fire crews, the woman was stabilised and flown directly to Wellington Hospital for further emergency care. The other injured people were treated and taken by road to Wairau Hospital. This ute was one of the vehicles involved in the head-on crash yesterday in which a Blenheim woman was critically injured.

Community Awards bigger, better Community organisations who enter this year’s Trustpower Community Awards competition will be sharing an increased prize pool. Trustpower Community and Communications Advisor Abbie Siely says that in reaching this year’s 25th anniversary milestone, they have increased prize money and widened the celebration to include neighbouring districts. A Community Award prize will double to $1000 while Regional Supreme Winners will receive $2000, up from $1500 last year, and a trip for two to the 2018 awards ceremony. While areas will retain their own award winners Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough will celebrate their community spirit and the achievements of volunteers together at a shared event in Nelson, with Trustpower providing transport to a different venue each year.. The changes have grown from consultation over the past year. Abbie said they had met with councils, attendees, past and present winners and the wider

community to find out what people valued most about the awards and what they think could be done better. “An idea that’s changing lives in one district can be implemented to great effect in another. Often, groups are connected with the perfect person to help them bring an idea to life, or make a current initiative even better,” she said. The Trustpower Community Awards are open to all community organisations with a voluntary component, and the categories include, but are not limited to ,Heritage and Environment; Health and Wellbeing; Arts and Culture; Sport and Leisure; Education and Child/Youth Development Anyone can enter a group online at trustpower. co.nz/. Entries close on Thursday May 31. Meanwhile, members of The Marlborough Book Festival committee, named as this region’s Supreme Winner at the Trustpower Community Awards 2017, will attend the national awards ceremony in Queenstown from April, 13-15.

HOME OF THE HILUX USED HILUX DEALS

Phil Brown is enjoying driving his battery powered electric vehicle.

Car man Phil gets going with electric By Bill McElhinney After 42 years driving petrol powered cars, long time Blenheim car dealer Phil Brown has gone electric. Phil recently bought a battery powered Nissan Leaf. The compact five door hatchback looks like any other hatchback, and is a dream to drive, Phil says. “But when you start it up there’s no noise, apart from a few chimes from the dashboard. “It just zips along silently and has plenty of power – you could exceed the speed limit easily if you didn’t watch out.” Phil began his car sales career in 1975 at Carthy Motors in Christchurch, and was soon caught up in the fuel crisis which hit motorists world-wide when the oil producing OPEC countries suddenly hiked their prices.

“The government reacted by changing the sales tax to push people toward smaller vehicles,” Phil says. “Overnight a six cylinder Holden went from $3800 to $5410, and big cars were impossible to sell. “And then the government introduced carless days. It was a tough time for dealers.” In 1978 Phil moved to a Ford dealership and was busy again. “We had a waiting list for the popular European-styled Ford Cortinas. “The Japanese cars were just starting to come on to the market at that time,” Phil says. “Toyota was targeting the fleet market with the Corona.” In 1981 Phil moved to Blenheim to work for Lucas Ford. “It was a good move,” he says. “It was a great place to

Electric vehicle advantages: Running costs – the equivalent of 30c a litre. Can be charged anywhere there is a power point. Pollution free – no tailpipe, no emissions. No noise. Reduced CO2 emissions – most NZ electricity comes from renewable resources. More efficient – 90% of the battery power is converted to move the vehicle. Fewer moving parts means less main-

work and I’ve always been a Ford man.” In 1996 he opened Phil Brown Motors in Main Street and although he has sold his car yard, he has retained his dealer licence and is still selling a few vehicles. He might even sell the Leaf, although he is enjoying the benefits of owning an electric vehicle in the meantime. “Charging the vehicle overnight is easy if you can park it in a garage or driveway close to a power point” Phil says. “And electric vehicles are exempt from road user charges.” And according to a Consumer survey, the Leaf is the country’s most reliable car. That’s no surprise, considering it has no combustion engine or gearbox, the two most complicated and problematic parts of a car.

tenance. Electric vehicle challenges: Cost – most are more expensive than conventional cars, but you save on running costs. Range – less than a petrol vehicle. A Generation1 Nissan Leaf has a range of 120km; a Generation3 model will go for 250km Battery life – batteries wear out over time, but most have a warranty of up to 10 years.

Keep rate rises down Dear Ed, The article in The Sun on February 14 ‘Year ahead to focus on basics’ from the Mayor contains several soothing phrases such as ‘a no frills approach to the council’s pending Long Term Plan’ and ‘we are being as prudent as we can’. However, closer reading reveals this to be a softening up of the public to try to prepare ratepayers for an unacceptably high rates increase this year. A few facts: 1. MDC rates are already

amongst the highest in NZthe 6th highest according to the 2017 Taxpayers Union report. 2. The latest official inflation rate is 1.6%. 3. Marlborough is amongst the lowest average wage regions in the country at the same time as inequality has soared. Is it not time for the MDC to show some real constraint and remember who they are elected to serve and be aware of the financial binds that large parts of the community are under?

Let the MDC show constraint like everyone else as well as empathy for ratepayers. Council development projects reserve funds (we are told they are healthy) and current low debt levels provide alternative and more equitable ways of funding essential capital projects. Let’s not hear justifications for extravagant rates increases of 5-6 per cent or worse. Will the councillors listen, stand up and be heard? Get Smart Abridged ED.

New cycle track complete By Celeste Alexander Work that began before Christmas on a cycle track in Renwick has now been completed, and cyclists and walkers can now enjoy a new path from the SPCA through to Eastern States Speedway. Over the past four years a group of cycling and walking enthusiasts, the Renwick Smart & Connected Bike Walk Working Group, have been putting together a network of walking and cycling paths around Renwick. In conjunction with the Bike Walk Marlborough Trust and additional funding from the Rata Foundation, the group has been able to link Renwick and the Wairau River Reserve with two completely off-road paths alongside State Highway 6. The new track now extends that network along the paper road with runs from the end of Alma Street North to Foxes Island Road extension. Spokesperson Steve Hill says the reason for wanting a dedicated path is that Alma Street North

Tom Newman and Murray Newman of Newman Excavations finishing up the new cycle track in Renwick.

and the extension of Foxes Island Road, form part of a loop which is well used by locals walking and cycling. “From Foxes Island Road people can now walk and cycle back into Renwick through Forrest Wines vineyard and then on to Blicks Road and Inkerman Street.

It will also provide a way for locals and tourists to get to Vines Village by going up Alma Street, up Vintage Lane onto Rapaura Road. “This means they will avoid Pak Lims Road and the section of private road past the Fulton Hogan Crusher and speedway track,” he says.

The group has been supported by the Bike Walk Marlborough Trust and the Marlborough District Council, as well as from Wairau River Wines who are the current leaseholders of the Foxes Island vineyard. On Alma Street North they have also been granted access across the Allen

vineyard, Steve says. Newman Excavations carried out the work on the cycle track and even had a spreader designed and engineered specifically for the width of track, owner Murray Newman says.

Renwick hall upgrade begins By Celeste Alexander The Renwick Community Memorial Hall will have a new air conditioning system installed and operational by the end of the month. Plans for the hall’s upgrade have been in the pipeline for sometime but thanks to funding secured from the Ministry of Education and fundraising from last year’s Twilight Carnival held by the Renwick School, and it’s hoped the upgrade will take shape this year. Hall committee chairperson Murray Newman says work on the air conditioning system has stalled a little because the Nelson company carrying out the work was flooded in a recent storm. But the upgrade is making good ground with a fit out of the hall

with two new large automatic screens and data projectors to improve the school’s ability to present and share material from students, classes and for the community, he says. “The funds for this were raised by our Twilight Carnival last year with support from the hall committee meeting the balance of costs. “We also have plans to increase the storage capacity of the hall, fully upgrade the toilet block, the RSA meeting room and the kitchen along with making the hall more comfortable all round for school and community users,” Murray says. To fund the work $600,000 has been secured from the Ministry of Education and the committee will continue to apply for funds
