Deni’s journey

By Celeste Alexander At the age of 25, former Marlborough Girls’ College student Deni MacDonald has already had some incredible adventures. Last August she and two of her friends travelled to India to take part in the Rickshaw Run rally, fundraising for the Marlborough Cancer Society along the way. The intrepid journey run by the organisation The Adventurists, took three weeks to complete, 3500km travelling the length of India in a three-wheeled motorised Rickshaw. She returned over a week ago, handed over a cheque for $4700 to the Cancer Society and has now returned to Dubai where she lives and works as a freelance photographer. Continued on page 2 Deni MacDonald with her team mates Will Sleigh and Aneel Kesry.

Trip of a lifetime for Deni The support for Deni and her team ‘Camel Tow’ began before they had even left the country. A close friend of Deni’s family, Sue White of Whitehaven Wines, kicked off their fundraising with a $1000 donation. Deni says the team’s decision to support the Cancer Society was easy to make because of the number of people they collectively knew that had been affected by cancer. “So many people I know have lost people to cancer. I am so grateful to Sue for her generosity and support... her donation was what got the ball rolling for us,” she says. Deni says despite being a ‘proud kiwi’, India easily stands up against New Zealand.

“India was so unexpectedly beautiful. We didn’t go near the cities but visited the tiny villages along the journey, staying and eating with the locals. Everyone was so excited that we were there to see their country,” she says. “I recommend others go and get lost in India, explore the villages and national parks because they are so beautiful and the people welcoming. I hope more youth do it because it’s a great way to fundraise and you have the most amazing adventure... it’s a win-win really.” The Rickshaw they travelled in was a 2-stroke, single cylinder engine with 7hp and a top speed of 60kph, and according to Deni was ‘agile, great for manouevering

around traffic.’ “They’re great for city living,” Deni laughs. Over the whole month they were there, Deni estimates they spent a combined amount of $1000 which included accommodation, food and a lot of Kingfisher beers. “At the end of the trip we stayed in a palace and partied with a prince. “It was unbelievable! “As a whole it was a pretty crazy adventure but I’m so glad I did it, and now I’m looking forward to the next one. I’m thinking I’d like to do the Monkey Run in Peru, run by the same organisation,” she says.

Muddy Buddy postponed By Bill McElhinney Cyclone Gita has hit the annual Marlborough Muddy Buddy, with the popular event being postponed from its scheduled date of this Sunday. The extreme weather conditions across the top of the south on Tuesday prompted organisers Sport Tasman to defer the staging of the event after consultation with the Marlborough District Council. The Havelock Estuary, venue for the Muddy Buddy, has been closed for safety reasons in the aftermath of the storm and associated heavy rainfall. No decision has yet been made on when the estuary will be cleared for use, so no postponement date has been set. Last year, 430 people of all ages slipped and slithered their way around the Adventure Run course in the estuary. The 2018 version will be the seventh year the event has been run, with organisers planning for a record turnout.

Corner Hutcheson & Parker Streets, Blenheim | 03 578 4719

“It’s disappointing to have to postpone the popular day out, but we had no choice with the closing of the estuary,” Jane Miles, Sport Tasman community sport advisor, says “Numbers registered were really good and we are sorry we are unable to host everyone on Sunday. “We are now looking at a suitable date in the near future to run the event,” Jane says. Local businesses had been prominent in helping prepare for the event, including United Fisheries, Johnson’s Barge Service and Marlborough Sounds Marinas, Jane says. However, interested parties can still register either as a team (maximum of 20) or a family (maximum of five). Entry fee for a team is $10 per person, while a family can enter for $35. So grab your friends, family and work colleagues and give it a go! Register at www.sporttasman.org.nz by clicking on the Events/Workshop tab, or register on the day.

Hundreds of people turned out for last year's Muddy Buddy event at the Havelock Estuary.

Gita leaves a mess

Rodeo this Sunday

State Highway One closed again By Bill McElhinney Blenheim dodged a bullet as ex-cyclone Gita flicked its tail through the Top of the South on Tuesday, but outlying areas were not so lucky. Part of Wairau Valley Township was flooded and the local school was closed on Wednesday and yesterday after fears that septic tanks at the school had been flooded. However, the school reopened today and principal Karen O’Donnell said areas on the school grounds that may have been contaminated by floodwaters would be cordoned off until it was known they were safe. “Morse Street, adjacent to the school, was under water,” Wairau Valley fire brigade member Jamie Timms says. “We think the floodwaters got into the septic tanks at the school and when the water drains away the tanks will have to be pumped out. “A garage in the street was sandbagged to keep the water out, but there doesn’t appear to have been too much damage to property.” Morse Street residents Garry and Kay Williams woke on Wednesday morning to find the street flooded and water running through the Wairau Valley school grounds and down the driveway into the house next door to the school. “The same thing happened last week, but didn’t reach this

level,” Gary says. “I could drive to work in our Suzuki Swift then, but not on Wednesday. We’ve been here 10 years and this is the third time this has happened.” Marlborough District Council communications manager Glyn Walters said sewage had overflowed in Picton on Tuesday night and people were being advised not to swim in the harbour for the next couple of days. There had also been a number of small sewer overflows in Blenheim, so people should stay out of surface floodwaters, which could be contaminated. Slips and blocked fords have closed several roads around the district and reduced others to single lane. State Highway 1 between Blenheim and Christchurch is closed and will be reassessed on Monday. The alternate route via SH63 is open and can be used over the weekend. T h e m a i n no r t h r a i l line between Picton and Christchurch is also currently closed, a KiwiRail spokesman says. Other roads closed: Port Underwood Road – Whites Bay to Robin Hood Bay; Centre Valley Rd; Top Valley Rd – past the last house, road access to DOC and forestry plantation road washed out. Other roads where care is required: Port Underwood Road – Robin Hood Bay to

Lisa’s MS gives her drive to succeed

Lisa Wheeler from Blenheim won first prize at the International Speech Contest held in Motueka. Pictured with Lisa is the chairperson of the International Speech Contest, Miranda Vriend.

When you’ve got drive, determination and MS what do you do? That’s the question Lisa Wheeler asked herself when her MS became a hindrance to everyday life. Having lived a very active physical life including running half marathons and enjoying scuba diving, the physical limitations created by this disease left her to question where she could gain value in a less active life. She found an answer two years ago in Sunbelt Speakers Toastmasters. Having competed in the Area Contest and lost last year she was determined

to do it better this year. The competition was strong but Lisa won the area competition last weekend at Lake Rotoiti. Competing against four clubs out of Nelson, Lisa took first place in the International speech contest. Lisa will now have to wait until April 21 for the Division Contest to compete against winners of eight other areas of the South island. Sunbelt Speakers was also honoured to receive the new Doug Hilliard Memorial Trophy for biggest contribution in the area to Toastmas-

ters over the year. Doug had been a long standing stalwart of Sunbelt before his early passing at age of 49 in late December. His mother and son arrived to present the trophy during a touching remembrance of Doug. The Sunbelt members have come together to grow the club and support members of the community who aim to better themselves through communication and leadership skills. Everyone is welcome at Sunbelt Speakers no matter what challenges you face.

Council has funds for community projects By Bill McElhinney Marlborough’s small townships and communities needing cash for a community project can apply for funds from the Marlborough District Council. “The council has set aside some funding for small, low-cost projects in outdoor public spaces,” the council’s community advisor for Marlborough townships, Adi James, says. “Any organisation or group that represents a township or community in Marlborough can put forward projects for this fund, but not Blenheim and Picton/

Waikawa as these are funded differently, and Havelock, Renwick, Wairau Valley, Spring Creek, Ward and Anakiwa/Tirimoana, which are currently on the full Small Townships Programme,” Adi says. The types of projects eligible include interpretation signs, landscaping, cycling and walking improvements, directional signs and many more. The fund will accept applications for individual projects up to $10,000. “This could be used to gain additional external funding, undertake

the first stage of a bigger project or to complete a stand-alone project,” Adi says. A copy of the information and application form is available for remote communities who may not have good internet connection. Residents can phone the council on 03 520 7400 to request the application material be posted to them. Applications must be received by 5pm on Monday, March 5. “There’s more information about the funding and the application process on the council’s website,” Adi says.

Country at Pollard Park

Tanya-Lee Smith will be performing as a guest artist at this Sunday’s concert.

By Celeste Alexander For those who love country music, local band Southbound will be performing a concert this Sunday at Pollard Park. The concert takes place between 2-5pm at the Baden Powell Glade and will feature two local guest artists, Tanya-Lee Smith and Tracey Ruffell. Southbound band member Ross Akerblom says the event is being held to promote country music in Blenheim, as well as raising money for Alzheimers Marlborough. “We will be having a gold coin collection to help the organisation so come along and enjoy some great music while supporting Alzheimers Marlborough,” he says. There will be a great selection of country music

by the band which is made up of members Ross on keyboard and vocals, Fiona Boniface on rhythm guitar and vocals and Bruce Windleburn on lead guitar. Nana’s Cream Freeze and TT’s Coffee Cart will be on hand serving up treats. If the weather is bad the event will be cancelled. Also this weekend will be the Marlborough 4 Fun Summer Concert Series at the Picton Foreshore on Saturday from 2pm. Then on Sunday there will be another concert held at Pollard Park at Churchill Glade from 5pm, straight after the country music finishes. If there is bad weather, Marlborough 4 Fun has a wet weather venue generously provided by the ASB Theatre, free for the public for Sunday’s concert.

Consumers win on ATM fees ANZ’s decision to remove the $1 fee it charges customers for using another bank’s ATM follows a call from Consumer NZ for all banks to remove these charges. Last year, Consumer NZ called on ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank, The Cooperative Bank and Westpac to remove

the fees. ANZ found people regarded the fee as unfair because even though they were using another bank’s ATM, they were still accessing their own money. ANZ announced it would remove the fee from the 26 March. Other banks have now followed ANZ’s lead.

Police report ‘Burglars active’ The Police have been attending a series of burglaries to properties around Blenheim, Spring Creek and in one case, to a rural property in the last week. Residents at an address in Cleghorn Street Blenheim had an unwanted visitor on their property and initially thought a bicycle that had been left on the property had been stolen, but found that it had been moved. It is possible that the thief was disturbed and left the bike behind. A Whitney Street Blenheim resident who had left some fishing gear and tools by the garage overnight on Saturday, February 17 found it had been stolen after someone entered the property. The stolen gear included a fish gaff, waders, a small axe, and a cardboard box and yellow bucket containing spanners, screwdrivers and other assorted tools. A Rata Place Blenheim resident returned home to find the door to the house showed signs of an attempt to force it open, and then found a bedroom window had been completely removed. Fortunately there was no obvious property stolen. A yellow and green ‘YardMan’ brand ride-on lawn-mower was stolen from a Spring Creek life-style block some time in the last week. It had been parked in an open three-bay shed on the property. Photographs of the mower can be seen on the Nelson, Marlborough, West

By community constable Russ Smith Coast Police social media page. Finally, a tractor parked in an unlocked shed on a vineyard on the Northbank Road west of Renwick, has been damaged by offenders who have unlawfully entered the property. The tractor was found to have had the air intake removed and water poured into the engine causing extensive damage. The Police would prefer that people do what they can to protect their property, therefore making it far safer and less likely to be stolen. You can make your property safer by doing things like securing your valuables and machinery behind a locked door, not leaving valuables lying around your property, particularly in plain view of public places and by reporting any suspicious activity around your place or your neighbours properties to the Police on 111 at the time of the incident.

Build bike skills at the new pump track on the Taylor The latest recreation spot on the Taylor River Reserve is proving hugely popular with the youngsters – the pump track near the Monro Street parking area which has been designed for young bike riders to develop their cycling skills. It’s a great spot for a workout on the bike with plenty of scope

for the twists and turns which enable cyclists to hone their balance and technique. Council has been planning this new track for a while now but it has come together thanks to the cooperative relationship with the local Mountain Bike Club and people from the cycling community who have thrown

their support behind the project. When autumn arrives, Council plans to seed the area with new grass, install signage and seating and plant some new shade trees near the new track. The pump track will be officially opened with a public BBQ on Sunday 4 March at 4.00 pm.

The hearing of submissions to the Proposed Marlborough Environment Plan has resumed. For the last two weeks, a panel of commissioners has been listening to the views of those who wanted to raise points about matters covered in the 1300 submissions on the proposed Plan. The indigenous biodiversity provisions of the Plan have been examined and this week the focus is on the climate change and energy provisions with landscape and natural character provisions set down for next week. Other topics will be heard progressively through to December 2018. The MEP effectively consolidates Council’s existing resource management documents into a single plan which becomes the district’s guide for future growth and development, at the same time setting out how the region’s natural and physical resources should be managed and protected.

The Sun Roaming dogs

Dogs are not cats, dogs can attack people and others animals. A young girl was bitten on Monday by a roaming dog. Yes it’s annoying that cats roam but its what some do , but dogs poo on the footpaths and anywhere they want. At least cats bury theirs. Just because cats roam doesn’t mean dogs should. If you cant keep your dog under control, don’t have one!!!

Dangerous van driver. To the laser electrical van driver that nearly ran me off Coleman’s road at 1.15pm on Monday. What the! You need to be more considerate. I had my daughter in my car. What would your owners say about your reckless behavior? Not impressed. I will be contacting your manager.

Generosity So delighted to read the chess and the young birthday groups giving to the community so cool .

Competitive theatre

I see the ASB Theatre advertising its conference and events facilities in the Sun (page 8 Friday 16th) Council and we ratepayers already own the Convention Centre next door and Council guarantees millions of the theatres loans. Seems the theatre is now competing with those that have propped it up already?

Opinion balance

Everyone is entitled to their opinion BUT when you bag retail staff could you include your occupation or work experience, just to add balance!

Bagrie vs retirement Sounds like Mr Bagrie is hoping that a lot more people in early 60s will die before reaching retirement age. If its so unaffordable why not scrub it altogether

Learner drivers With regards to the issues on learner drivers. To the “gentleman” who owns a black 4x4 and turned left to Rarangi road. Overtaking an overtaking car is not something done at the best of times, especially when the driver has got an L plate and was clearly indicating. But, oh no, you could not possibly wait and there we were, 3 cars abreast on SH1

Close call Bus Drivers need to be more responsible..... On Friday the 9th I had a very scarey incident while out on my bike. I was in Vickerman Street Grovetown, beside a huge conifer hedge, when a school bus over took me. There was a moving vechicle on the other side of him travelling the opposite direction. I did not hear the bus, until I looked up and saw it was a couple of inches from me. If I had extended my little finger I would have touched it. I felt terrified!! The hedge could be heard swishing on top of the bus. He came down Aberharts road, turned into Vickerman Street, and he was pretty much on top of me. I had nowhere to go, as the hedge borders the road. I could feel the hedge on my left. How I managed to stay on my bike I will never know. He should not have passed me there, especially with a vechicle travelling opposite him.

Blenheim grower Nola Neal with her winning entry in the giant decorative section of the National Dahlia Show.

Dazzled! By Bill McElhinney New Zealand dahlia growers take a bow – your flowers are good enough to show anywhere around the world. That was one of the comments from the overseas judges who came to Dahlias d’Vine, the 80th jubilee show for the Dahlia Society of New Zealand which was hosted in Blenheim at the weekend by the Marlborough Horticultural Society. The show, which was combined with the Marlborough Society’s annual show, drew crowds to St Mary’s Church hall on Saturday and Sunday to view the exhibits. “The judges were very impressed with the standard of the show,” Marlborough Horticultural Society president Philip Gibbison says. “They said these blooms could compete anywhere. “And our local exhibitors did really well, with several of them winning national awards. “The judges also said that the some of the exhibits in our local Horticultural Society show could have been included in the national show.” The recent spell of hot weather took its toll on many gardens, and dahlias don’t travel

OPEN DAY

All welcome

SATURDAY 24th FEBRUARY 10am-4pm

In the new Redwoodtown Development - Entrance in Countdown Carpark

Visit Redwoodtown’s newest fitness centre The doors have officially opened to Redwoodtown’s new health and fitness facility, XPotential, and if you haven’t visited yet, you can this Saturday during its open day from 10am 4pm. The gym opened last month and has already received a very positive response, manager Rebecca Dalton-Harvey says. “Our classes have been really popular and we’ve had people say they enjoy the new equipment and the air-conditioning

too,” she says. There’s a range of classes available from low impact through to fast paced spin. For those wanting to workout alone, the brand new equipment installed is some of the latest models available including some that are new to Blenheim, Rebecca says. “We have three quite unique machines. The Matrix S-Drive parachute and sled-push treadmill is not electric, but uses your own body movement. Then there’s

Meet the team at Xpotential

the Sparc Trainers which is a low impact, body resistance machine and then we have the Stair Climber which gives an amazing workout, where you can set yourself challenges.” Staff are available to demonstrate how each machine works and can give advice and friendly encouragement. If you have an existing membership with another gym, talk to the XPotential team and ask what deal they can do for you.

COURTNEY is relatively new to fitness but she is incredibly passionate about the industry and the opportunities it provides to help people better their well-being and feel great about themselves. Courtney thrives on working with people to acheive their goals and looks forward meeting them soon.

MARG is a dynamic fitness professional with a background in rehabilitation, group fitness and personal training, providing tailored fitness programmes to strengthen and tone, cardio and high-intensity training, and weigth-loss strategies. Marg will motivate and support you to achieve your health and fitness goals.

REBECCA has worked in the Fitness industry for over 20 years and is passionate about people and their well-being. She has competed in women’s body shaping for 12 years and enjoys working with people to help set goals, encourage and motivate them and see that they become the best they can be.

My ideal day is spent... Fishing in the Sounds with family and mates.

One of my best holidays was... Visiting friends in the Oregon wine country.

One thing on my bucket list is... To sit in a pub in Ireland and yarn with the locals.

Q A Q A Q A

If I could, I would... Have no niggly injuries and beat Pete Buscke at squash

What’s your favourite meal? I love a good curry.

My guilty TV pleasure is ... Breaking Bad.

Q A Q A Q A

My parents used to say... Buck up your ideas!

The keys to happiness are... A loving family and good mates.

Who would you love to share a meal with and why? Brandon Flowers. He’s got soul and he’s not a soldier.

gardening this week with Wally Richards

Dim light won’t help plants grow There are two sources of light: sunlight and man-made artificial light. Normally these days such light comes from electricity using incandescent light bulbs, halogen, fluorescent and, more recently. LED lighting. Plants can grow in artificial light depending on the spectrum, which should be a combination of cool, white fluorescent with an incandescent light bulb, or Grolux Tubes, which are harder to find these days. Plants need light to perform photosynthesis, by which green plants and certain other organisms use the energy of light to convert carbon dioxide and water into the simple sugar glucose. In so doing, photosynthesis provides the basic energy source for virtually all organisms. Oxygenic photosynthesis functions as a counterbalance to respiration: it takes in the carbon

dioxide produced by all breathing organisms and reintroduces oxygen into the atmosphere. So here we have two of the most important aspects of plants. They need/use light (sunlight) to produce carbohydrates (sugars) to grow and produce food for most living species and also convert CO2 into oxygen for all breathing creatures on land or in the sea. Plants want sunlight but ultra violet light (UV) hampers their ability to achieve photosynthesis. There are three types of UV, UVA, UVB and UVC. Sunlight spectrum is from 400700nm and is termed Photosymthetically Active Radiation (PAR). This light is in the blue (400500nm) and red (600-700nm) spectrum. When we look at a plant and see green, it is because the chlorophyll molecules in the plant absorb blue and red light and reflect other colours, resulting in the green

colour we see. The intensity of light is important for maximizing the rate of photosynthesis. The optimal light level for photosynthesis is 10,000 lux. Lux is a unit for measuring light intensity. Low light intensity lowers the rate of photosynthesis. However, after reaching an intensity of 10,000 lux, there is no increase in the rate of photosynthesis. Hopefully I have made my case: plants are receiving much less than the ideal (10,000 lux) of sunlight, and UVA and UVB are reducing the plant’s ability to convert the lesser light to carbohydrates. Plants are not growing as they used to do in the past. (And the skies are very different to those of my young years.) Global dimming is the gradual reduction in the amount of global direct irradiance at the Earth’s surface that was observed for

several decades after the start of systematic measurements in the 1950s. The effect varies according to location, but world-wide it has been estimated to be in the order of a four per cent reduction over the three decades from 1960–1990. Global dimming is thought to have been caused by an increase in particulates such as sulfate aerosols in the atmosphere due to human action geoengineering. Most patents taken out in regards to geoengineering state sun or global dimming. The idea presumably is to re duc e globa l warming by reducing sunlight reaching the

Earth’s surface. In fact the reverse applies as it traps more heat and thus increases more evaporation which increases cloud cover. That later results in the crazy weather patterns we are now having, including downpours and extreme flooding. And more heating of oceans results in hurricanes.

The More FM Beach Day was held on Sunday at Whites Bay and was a huge success. The 30degree heat brought families out to enjoy the water and sand and to take part in the Peter Ray Homes Sandcastle Competition and the MTF Beach Dig. The winner of the lucky $500 tag was Picton teenager Dylan Enderson. It was Dylan’s idea to go along to the event and instead of wanting to spend the money on himself, he says he wants to put it towards the family holiday to visit his older brother in the UK.

With Jacob Page

The emotive cricket column They say never write a column angry because it’s like being married and going to bed with the same mindset - no good can come of it. Well, I’ll break the rule for hopefully therapeutic benefits. When it comes to cricket, I’m a curmudgeon trapped in a 28-yearold body. I like test cricket and don’t care for the crash and bash cash-cow that is twenty20 cricket. Rarely do I watch the short form but when I do I try not to become emotionally invested in the outcome. I broke that rule on Friday night, persuaded by a sterling batting

effort from the Black Caps which resulted in what I’ll call an embarrassing bowling and fielding performance. Defending 243 against a powerful Australian batting line-up on the postage stamp Eden Park, short boundaries and all. The bowlers looked bereft of ideas, and for Blenheim’s Ben Wheeler, it was a performance best forgotton. Wheeler went for 64 runs off 3.1 overs before he was ejected from the bowling crease for two full toss deliveries over the waist of batsmen. I played cricket with Wheeler

during my time in Blenheim, I was hopeless, he was a star but that effort may have long lasting scars. Watching 488 runs in 39 overs leaves me cold, I want a competition between bat and ball and T20 won’t offer me that. The Black Caps need a mindshift, our bowlers look below par when under real pressure and our fielding has always been decent but dropped catches have haunted our 2018 so far. I’ve tried to keep this column relatively constructive as opposed to negative but sometimes a spade needs to be called a spade. I never have thought the 2017/18

Former local netballer steps up

Black Caps were the best in history - there are too many weaknesses to match with the good. I spent $6000 getting to the Cricket World Cup final in Melbourne on short notice three years ago. That Black Caps side got my money and they deserved it this team does not. There is a difference between being a fan and a cheerleader. Nights like last Friday distinguish them very well. Yes, the Aussies batted superbly but deep down, we should know that not being able to defend 243 in 20 overs is simply unacceptable.

Athletes return from Challenge Wanaka World Championships in Denmark in July. Challenge Wanaka is New Zealand’s largest triathlon festival with over 2500 participants of all ages and abilities from around the world. Internationally recognised as the “World’s Most Scenic Triathlon” it features both half (1.9km swim, 90km bike, 21km run) and full (3.8km swi m, 180k m bi ke, 42.2km run) distance events for individuals and teams plus the Aquabike (3km swim, 120km bike).

The first family team was Tom’s Terminators, from Nelson, and the first individual in the over-60 event was Colin McMahon, from Blenheim. “The group that won the family event last year came back this year and won the same event again,” Dianne says. The Blenheim Badminton Club is inviting people to come and have a go on Monday night. Club members will be at St Mary’s Church Hall from 7pm to provide advice. Just wear soft shoes with non-marking soles, club member Anna Reed says. “Anyone can play badminton,” Anna says. “We cater for all levels. It’s good fun, so come and have a go. We’ll provide the equipment and show you how to play.”

Super saloon titles go to local drivers Eastern States Speedway held a well attended two-day racing meeting last weekend. Two of the major races were the South Island Super Saloons Champs where local driver Shane McIntyre won the title, and the Vertex Cup for Super Saloons where another local driver, Pete Dixon won the round. Club president Stu Coutts says it was great to see two out of three local super saloon drivers win, as well as the large crowds that gathered to watch.

Good crowd for Sounds triathlon 10 year event By Bill McElhinney The popular family-focused Waitaria Bay triathlon celebrated a successful decade with a record turnout at the weekend. “We had a great group of participants and spectators from all age groups,” organiser Dianne Dixon says. Dianne’s husband, John, started the triathlon in 2008 and it now attracts regular groups from as far away as Motueka and Nelson. The first man home in the individual event was Martyn Birch, from Blenheim. The first individual woman

the kayak leg challenging, and one competitor had to be pulled out of the water after tipping out. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the tri a social event was held in the Waitaria Bay Hall on Saturday evening. John and Dianne are now stepping down as the organisers and are hoping others will step up to ensure the event continues. “You don’t even have to live here to do this,” Dianne says. “With email these days you could organise it from Agnes and Emma Takacs at the Waitaria Bay just about anywhere.” Triathlon.

The 2018 Forrest GrapeRide is set for April 7 and entry numbers are up 40 per cent on the same time last year. There are still places available in the field, but organisers say not to leave it too late as the cut off sits at 2500.
