Action packed day at rodeo Sunday’s Tuamarina Rodeo and Vintage Machinery Field Day attracted a good crowd, with plenty of spills and entertainment for young and old. The blustery conditions didn’t deter man or animal from putting on a show and at times the action was not for the faint hearted. Winner of the Best Marlborough Rider went to Brian Lechbrook and Marlborough’s Scarlett Sheridan was placed second in her very first ever Barrel Race. All the proceeds from the day go to the Tua Marina School and the Tua Marina Residents Association. Next year will be a major milestone as the Tua Marina Rodeo and Vintage Machinery Field Day celebrate 70 years.

All clear for grapes The New Zealand Defence Force has tested grapes taken from vineyards in the vicinity of the Woodbourne Air base for the presence of PFOS and PFOA (fire fighting foam). The results have come back clear - no perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoic acid was detected. Both are fluorinated organic chemicals. These substances are synthetic compounds that are unique for being water and lipid-resistant. NZDF is pleased with the outcome and reassurance for growers and the wine industry. The Ministry for Primary Industries is confident that there is no food safety risk for grapes or wine from PFAS.

Olympic sauvignon blanc American Winter Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon’s celebrated his bronze medal in the team competition with a distinctly Marlborough flavour. The veteran skater told ABC’s Good Morning America that when the competition was done and he headed home to celebrate, the first thing he was going to do was buy a bottle of Oyster Bay sauvignon blanc “immediately”.

Fred Uhrle and Rick Gleeson of the Renwick Menz Shed with a car they’ve been donated and are selling to fundraise

Menz Shed says ‘make an offer’ By Celeste Alexander Are you up to the challenge of restoring this 1970 Austin Maxi? For 20 years the car has sat under a tree until its owner decided to donate it to the Renwick Menz Shed, and now it’s up for sale. With a little coaxing and some basic mechanical work done to it, the Austin Maxi is running again and is ready for its new home. Renwick Menz Shed manager Rick Gleeson says it would be the ‘perfect restoration project’ for someone. “Our plan is to sell it and put the money towards extending

our current building so we have more space to work. “It’s a great little car, all it needs is some TLC,” he says. Renwick Menz Shed member and retired mechanic Fred Uhrle has been working on getting the car going and says it didn’t take much to fire it up. “After sitting for 20 years I was surprised that it didn’t take much to get it going,” he laughs. “The previous owner even came along to hear it going… it was a nice moment.” Initially Rick says they planned to work on the car themselves,

but they have limited space and can’t afford the parts. “Otherwise it would be a good project. “We struggle to fit everyone in to the space we have now, let alone a car and necessary tools to work on it. “We’d love to hear from anyone willing to make an offer on it. The money will be put to good use,” he says. The planned extension to the building is an additional 15 metres in length, which will come in handy as the Renwick Menz Shed is getting busier.

Highway still closed

“We are in our second year of hosting students from Renwick School for woodwork sessions, we are refurbishing wooden seats out of the community hall and making pieces to sell at the Renwick market held on a Tuesday. “We were also approached by Alzheimers Marlborough last year about hosting some of their clients… it’s certainly getting busier. We just need more space now,” Rick says. To find out more about the car, contact Rick on (03) 572 8685.

State Highway 1 through Kaikoura to Christchurch is not expected to reopen until the end of the week. The road has been closed since last Tuesday after ex-Cyclone Gita brought down tonnes of debris over the road at 60 sites. New Zealand Transport Agency earthquake recovery manager Tim Crow said when the road opens it will be single lane in many more sections than before the storm and travellers should expect more delays than before. The slips have also closed KiwiRail’s Main North Line, which runs alongside the highway.

Pictured Left: Tony Nolan, Dennis Jackson and deputy principal rural fire officer Chris Hayles with some of the teddys that fire and emergency crews will have to give to traumatised children.

Care bears to help young trauma victims By Bill McElhinney South Island English Freemason are celebrating their organisation’s 300th year by donating more than 10,000 teddy bears to emergency service groups working with children in traumatic situations. Up to 200 of the cute bears have been donated to Marlborough Emergency Services including the fire brigade and St John Ambulance. “These are a massive help for us,” Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy chief fire officer Tony Nolan says. “It distracts young trauma victims, just takes the edge off, and allows us to get on with our job.” Dunedin Lodge grand master Dennis Jackson, who has moved to Blenheim, presented the bears to the

brigade, says last year the Grand Lodge of English Freemasons celebrated 300 years of service to communities worldwide since the formation of their Institution at a meeting in a small London ale house back in 1717. With support from the Irish Provincial Grand Lodge of New Zealand a charitable project was launched to mark this milestone, TLC – Teddies for Loving Care. “Donations of numerous cute, soft toy teddy bears to South-Island emergency services and groups working with children in traumatic situations, is continuing,” Dennis says. “The bears can be given to a child on the spot by a fireman or care-giver to help shift their focus away from the accident or fire. It is a first

step to recovery by providing a degree of comfort from the trauma or illness the child may be suffering from.” TLC Appeal chair Tony Mansfield said the idea for Freemasons to donate bears to children started about 15 years ago in Essex, England, when a Freemason’s wife became sick. “A couple were in the hospital emergency department and the wife had a really bad attack and they got really good care and they asked ‘what can we do for the staff of ED departments,’” he said. “And they came up with this idea.” It has since been picked up by Masonic fraternities across the world, beginning in New Zealand in November last year.

Mike King with message of hope

TODAY ONLY! paknsave.co.nz Valid Wednesday 28th February

By Celeste Alexander Comedian Mike King made quite the impact during his last year’s visit to Blenheim, and he’s hoping to do that again with his ‘I Am Hope’ tour. But he won’t be driving or flying into Blenheim, but rather riding a Suzuki 50cc bike. As part of the four week campaign, Mike and seven others will ride the bikes from Cape Reinga to Bluff to raise awareness, encourage openness and to listen without judgment when others come to them seeking help. Mike aims to address youth suicide by shedding the stigma associated with it, and empowering communities to connect with their youth who are struggling. He says his success in addressing the unacceptably high rate of suicide in New Zealand is due to his unorthodox method or opening up and connecting emotionally with young people, making the topic more accessible. “We can help our young people when they feel like they’ve hit rock bottom. By listening to them without judgment, without perpetuating the old Kiwi ‘toughen-up-mate’ attitude, we can show them it’s OK to feel down, lonely and sad, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and there’s hope. “Our youth want to feel connected, understood and not judged. We know that shame is a huge factor in talking about depression and mental illness. “We’re here to say there is no shame in battling mental illness and many people suffer

from it, but something can be done about it. We are here to empower them by stripping away shame from their thoughts and feelings, and letting them know they can make it through,” Mike says. Mike will be holding a free public talk on Thursday, March 15 at Marlborough Girls’ College starting at 7pm.

Big fish weighed in By Celeste Alexander A fishing competition that began with humble beginnings has again exceeded its annual entry count. The Renwick Arms Country Club Fishin’ Competition was held at the weekend and attracted 248 entries, four more than last year’s record number. Of the 248, 70 were children’s entries which was fantastic to see, organiser Alan Ferguson says. “We were rapt with how well it went... there were lots of families that entered which is what it’s about really, and some bloody good fish weighed in.” At Sunday’s weigh-in event, the talk among everyone was the ‘huge stingray’ entered. “It was massive, weighing in at 59.5kg gutted. The guts from it weighed 11kg so it was at the 70kg mark intact. “We heard about the battle the boys had getting it onto the boat. It was an amazing fish,” Alan says.

Trout release - safe to go back? Dear Ed Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water Fish & Game infest the Branch Hydro Scheme with the piscatorial equivalent to a plague of rats. Cynically excusing the violation with propaganda of providing a community service for youth, hopeful of an indifferent and gullible public, all in complete contempt for the common good and modern sensibilities

which emphasize educating youth about conservation together with responsible environmental attitudes and practices. Lamentable is the lost opportunity, on completion of the scheme, of introducing vulnerable native fish to the exclusion of exotic vermin. Across the Wairau in Lake Chalice resides the last population of Giant Kokopu in Marlborough, possibly the South Island, only because

a natural, physical barrier across the Goulter deprives trout access. One waits in trepidation for some malcontent to liberate exotics, motivated by a perverted sense of self-righteousness, as happened with the Taylor Dam, requiring consequent sterilization of the reservoir and extermination of all life therein. Lost business Dear Ed Have you experienced these calls to a business that make you run the gauntlet of press one for, press two for and so, while invariably you get to the end of the ‘press number’ game and find you haven’t got anywhere. I tried to ring AMI (insurance) and ended up utterly fruitless and frustrated. To me it is incredible business firms use this client-unfriendly system. Employ a real person as a receptionist for say $40,000 a year otherwise like AMI you’re going to lose heaps of business. I took my AMI enquiry (business) elsewhere. “Jilted”

Rate rises likely? Dear Ed Following on from “Get Smart” writing about rate rises and council spending, I don’t see the platitudes of the mayor claiming council is being “prudent” and has a “no frills” approach to have much substance. I see some very questionable work being done by contractors. For example at Botham’s Bend, weeks of earthworks must cost a big sum. The work is to strengthen stop banks I was told; but the Wairau River is a good 800 metres away. The work by the High Street bridge over the Taylor must have cost heaps. There are numerous other examples too. Space prevents listing them. Rate rises are likely given the frilly spending and lack of prudence. “Agent 99” Blenheim

Keep rates down Dear Ed, Good letter by Get Smart last week. I do not see constraint by council. Meanwhile, the contractors and consultants are chortling all the way to the bank. On rates, I understand Blenheim rates are comparable to the up-market suburb of Merivale in Christchurch and even Queenstown. That does not reflect the “no frills” and “prudent” boasts in the mjayor’s rhetoric. Realism Blenheim

More light in our lives Jason Null, Contracts Manager with Marlborough Lines, says that the project to replace Blenheim’s current lighting with more efficient LED lighting is well under way. Up to three crews have been working on the replacement of the 3515 lights for the Marlborough District Council. “We’ve started in the Springlands, Mayfield, Budge Street and Muller Road areas” The team expects to be finished by the end of June. “But that’s weather dependent of course.” The new LEDs are a white light that has a defined spill area; quite different to the sodium lights that provide a more orange, diffused light. While the choice

of areas for initial installation seems random, he said the choice was related to the different levels of light needed in selected streets. “Different fittings are used where lower levels of light are needed. Coleman’s Road and Redwood Street, for example, needed higher levels. “This means

sourcing different fittings from different suppliers.” The lower level fittings were the first to become available. LED Street Lights last four to five times longer than the old sodium lights. T hey a lso use less power and will require less maintenance. While staff were

working on this project, workers from other areas were being brought in to assist with other work said Jason. The New Zealand Transport Authority has provided an 85 per cent subsidy to the Marlborough District Council for the conversion reducing costs to ratepayers.

This man is not the retiring kind Glenise Dreaver speaks to 93-year-old John Henson about the secrets of his long and active life Former shipwright John Henson with just a few of the model boats he has crafted over decades

When John Henson of Blenheim goes down his (long) drive for the mail each morning he jogs. It’s not a genteel elderly jog either. It’s a full-blooded run that most middle-aged people would be proud of. For John has no time to waste on a gentle stroll. His garden takes time for a start. It’s a real winner, well known for its fine vegetables and flowers. (John featured in the Sun last week with his prize-winning gerberas.) Indoors, there are also prize winning orchids which droop with flowers. In their first year, they produced 61 blooms on two plants. But the former shipwright’s major passion is building model boats. He has one in a glass case in his lounge, five in the back bedroom and several in the garage.

Then there’s the structure for the Jack Morgan-built speedboat Pelorous Jack just getting under way in his workshop. The workmanship on all his models is breathtaking. Even the lifeboats, some only 8-12 cm long, are crafted from individually shaped and curved planks. Several are earmarked for grandchildren and great grandchildren. John’s parents shifted to Blenheim from Havelock when he was quite a small child and the rest of his life since has been spent either in Blenheim or Picton. He was one of the early members of the Picton Rail and Sail model boat and train facility. “I spent a lot of time on the Foreshore,” he says and he is a life member of the Picton Society of Model Engineers. His original model boats from

1978 lasted for years, but he hears they have now had to be replaced. In 1988, he and wife Gloria were given the chance to sell their Picton home and move to a unit in Blenheim. “Pestered to actually.”

John doesn’t let his age get in the way of their activities

The offer of a sale came a few years before they were ready, but after a lot of persuasion they decided to go. It meant giving up their big garden, which had fed their family of four children, quite a few foster children “and a lot of others too”.

Because of the travelling involved, John then transferred his membership of the Marlborough Associated Modellers’ Society to Brayshaw Park. He’s an active member, not letting age get in the way of their activities. “I still walk to town and back,” he says. That’s no small distance from his Leefield Street home. He has no clear pointers to his exceptional fitness and long life, though he is emphatic that he never drinks treated water, drinking it only occasionally when it is boiled and the taste covered by tea. “We were brought up drinking water out of the creek.” He does eat the vegetables from his prolific garden, though most go to his daughter. He eats relatively little meat, and enjoys coming in from the shed to

eat a fresh salad and watch The Chase on TV. One vegetable John truly enjoys and eats a lot of is sorrel. John picks the small and tender leaves, piling them into a big pot without water after stripping out the stems. “It doesn’t burn” he says, adding that he boils it down to what is basically a green gravy. “I add an egg and eat it on bread. It’s beautiful.” Outside his garage is evidence of his next project. There’s a large pile of planks which will be laid round the model pond at Brayshaw Park over the next few weeks. “We have to get on with this in a hurry as the contractors who will be finishing the job go back down south by May.” John’s eyes light up at the thought, and there’s clearly no way he’ll be a sleeping partner on that project.

Council expands rural recycling services By Bill McElhinney Recycling is becoming more accessible for residents and visitors in the Marlborough Sounds and Awatere Valley. A $10,000 grant from the Glass Packaging Forum has enabled the Marlborough District Council to expand its rural community recycling programme to include Okiwi Bay in the Marlborough Sounds, and the Awatere Valley, south of Blenheim. A 20cubic metre container is being placed at each location, giving residents and visitors far easier access to recycling. The programme already has containers in seven other rural sites around Marlborough, resulting in hundreds of tonnes of recyclable material, like glass, cardboard and plastic being diverted from landfill every year. During 2016/17 over 353 tonnes of recyclables were collected from the seven sites, of which glass made up over 203 tonnes. Okiwi Bay and the Awatere Valley were chosen as they are currently isolated from direct recycling services, council solid waste manager Alec McNeil says. “The travel time for residents and visitors from these areas to the Resource Centre in Blenheim can take between two and four hours roundtrip. The nearest

transfer stations, in Seddon and Rai Valley, are only open for limited hours during the week 12 hours total. “These containers will provide not only a service to these areas but also a feeling of connectivity to the wider region,” Alec says. The Awatere Valley container is already in place and the container in Okiwi Bay will be placed this week, Alec says. While both areas have relatively low populations during the winter months – there are fewer than 100 winter residents in Okiwi Bay and some 50 properties in the Awatere Valley – both experience a huge influx over summer. In peak season the resident and visitor population in Okiwi Bay is up to 1500, while the Awatere Valley Road is a popular alternative scenic route to Hanmer Springs via the Molesworth Station, with hundreds of cars per day in summer, Alec says. The new container is next to the Awatere Valley Road, approximately 25km from the junction with State Highway 1, and the other will be in the Okiwi Bay settlement on council land, Alec says. He expects around 56 tonnes of recyclable material will be collected from them, of which glass will make up nearly 60 per cent.

Valda White is brimming with enthusiasm. She’s a Peer Leader for an Age Concern Otago Steady As You Go group in Dunedin.

EV owners keen to share experiences By Bill McElhinney There’s a lot of Leaf litter outside the Envirohub in Picton, and the people responsible for it would like to see even more. The Leafs are Nissan Leaf electric vehicles, and the people who own them love them. “We’ve formed a loosely-knit Picton Electric Vehicles Club,” Siobain Browning says, who owns one of the cars. “We are having a gathering of electric vehicle owners on Saturday and would like to invite other EV owners in Picton (and Blenheim) to come along! “There are seven of us. We got to know each other because we all own electric vehicles, and we enjoyed getting together to swap information about them.

“For instance the graphics on the dashboard are in Japanese, but you find people who know what they mean and are able to pass the knowledge on. It’s very helpful. “We hope there are more electric vehicle owners out there who would like to share stories and experiences, so we are having a gathering at Whatamango campground on Saturday at noon. “It would be good to find others and share experiences, and also to encourage more people to consider electric vehicles. “We are all concerned about things like climate change and global warming and electric vehicles can help combat this. “So if you’re interested, charge on out to our inaugural branch picnic on Saturday,” Proud Picton electric vehicle owners, from left: James and Barbie Wilson, Siobain Browning, Siobain says. Don Miller, Dianne John and Mark Altoff.

Daily bus service to run at lunch times By Bill McElhinney Regular Blenheim bus users Patricia Boult and Debbie Scott love the service. “It’s a great service,” Patricia says. “I use it every Monday, Thursday and Friday.” “I’d like to see it start earlier in the day in the Witherlea area,” Debbie says. “If there was a bus around 8am it would help more people get to work.” Good news for the bus regulars is that the daily service is expanding, with buses operating through the lunchtime period from tomorrow. The extra lunchtime run is being added to the two existing Redwoodtown-Witherlea and Springlands-Riversdale circuits, between noon and 1pm. “Marlborough District councillors made the decision to invest in the additional hour’s service, which will provide

Regular user Patricia Boult and driver Heather Ruffell.

a more seamless experience for passengers,” council finance officer David Craig says. The extra circuit will be an

extension to the service provided by Ritchies Transport Holdings Limited, who have been awarded a new nine-year contract which

begins tomorrow. Council is also seeking feedback on a possible expansion of bus services including two new routes, one out to Renwick and the other linking Burleigh and the Boulevard Park on Taylor development to the town centre. “We did a small survey in Renwick last year,” councillor and Renwick resident Cynthia Brooks says. “One of the interesting things we discovered was that parents of teenagers who don’t drive would like to have a bus service that would get their kids to and from various youth events in Blenheim. “We plan to survey residents soon to gauge people’s travel

patterns and their preferred time of travel, to ensure we can provide the right service for the majority of people” David says. “We want to get a better understanding of how residents use the current services, and how they think it could be improved. “We also want to know whether additional routes are required or whether an extension of service hours would result in locals catching the bus to and from work,” David says. Survey forms will be available via the council website and can also be collected from council reception, the Blenheim Library, Picton Library and Service Centre, and from bus drivers.

Advice for grooms Hey grooms, it’s not all about just getting up, dressed and out the door on your wedding day. There are a few other things to remember too. Alarm clock Yes it’s obvious, but if you had a late one the night before you may sleep through and end up running behind on time. Breakfast Most important meal of the day. Plus if you have a few glasses of bubbles during the day, you won’t want it to be on an empty stomach. Surprise your wife-to-be Why not get her a little gift or even write her a note that

she can enjoy on the morning of the wedding. It will show her you are thinking of her and add a little more romance to the day. Look your best All eyes will be on you as you wait at the alter, so put in the preparation to look your best. Make a list of things to do like iron your shirt, shave, shower properly and tie your tie like a pro. You can say no to the beersies Yes the getting ready part of the day is fun, and nice to have a beer with the boys, but don’t drink too much in the morning. It’s OK to calm the nerves but you don’t want

to be feeling sick at the alter. Likewise, if you go out with the boys the night before, it might not be a good idea to end up with a hangover or to be stumbling through the day. Keep hydrated That said, drink up! But the non-alcoholic variety. Make sure you drink plenty in the morning, and keep a bottle of water on you for the day. It’s a busy job being a groom. The rings While it’s a good idea to give the job of looking after the rings to the best man, you still need to make sure you know where they are.

Bride show set for June The Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show for 2018 is in the process of being organised by its hard working committee. What’s interesting about this year’s show is that it will be in a new venue with a slightly different format, convenor Noeline Stewart says. “This year we will be holding the show at the ASB

Theatre. “It will be theatre style seating with a cocktail hour with drinks and nibbles held before the show. “We will also be having trade tables for businesses wanting to showcase their services and wares, as well as our ever popular silent auction and raffles on the night,” she says. Noeline and the committee

invite businesses interested in booking a trade table for a $75 cost, to contact them. Brides wanting to register a place in the show are also encouraged to get their application forms. For more information and for application forms, email bblbrideoftheyear@gmail. com The cost per bride entry is only $25.

Stress-free wedding tips Here are some tips for a stress-free wedding day. • You ca n’t cont rol everything, especially the weather. You can, however, prepare in advance, especially if your ceremony or reception is outdoors. Ask your rental company to put an extra marquee on reserve. You can also reserve standup fans if you’re worried about a heat wave. After that? Stop looking at the hourly forecast every 45 seconds. • Hire an event co-ordinator. You may be tempted to think you can do all of the planning yourself, but by hiring someone to handle the details on the day can make a huge difference.

Remember, you should be a guest at your wedding, not the staff. • Keep your schedule clear! It’s tempting to plan a big brunch or line up manicures, pedicures, hair, and a bikini wax on the morning of the wedding, but try not to do too much. Just stick to the absolute necessities and your wedding day will fly by faster than you could ever imagine. If you have too many activities, you won’t have space to take in the real once-in-a-lifetime moments. • Have alone time with your new husband. This is a biggie. You need to make a date with your new spouse during the reception, even if it’s just 10 minutes or so.

Take a few moments to hang out in a dressing room. Or, if you’re driving from a church to the reception, go alone rather than riding with the whole wedding party. • Ask someone to be a keepsake wrangler. You may not remember to grab the little things like programmes, menus, napkins etc, so ask a friend to collect some for your keepsake box. • Remember what’s important. Zippers will break, flower girls will cry, music may not play on cue, but what matters is the marriage, not the height of the centerpieces. So enjoy the day as a whole rather than worrying about the small details.

Planning a special event or occasion? Our function and event centre is the perfect location you are looking for. Come in and see for yourself. We cater for weddings, parties, christmas parties or conferences and anything else that requires a venue with atmosphere and style.
