Loving it here Marlborough tops retirement choice By Bill McElhinney Oh dear, the secret is out. Soon they’ll be flying down here in their droves. Auckland newspaper the New Zealand Herald set out to find which are the best places in the country to retire to, taking into account property prices, rates, sunshine hours, burglary rates, access to healthcare and the size of the over-65 population. And the winner? Marlborough - the country’s best retirement destination, followed by the Waimakariri District near Christchurch. Continued on Page 2. How to reach us

Marlborough tops - retirement place to be By Bill McElhinney “Well of course they’re right!” say former Aucklanders Michael and Rosey Birkett, who drove around the South Island before choosing Blenheim as the place to retire. “I’m a born and bred Aucklander,” Rosey says, “and it’s still home to some extent, but I’d never live anywhere else but Blenheim now.” Michael agrees. “It wasn’t an easy decision to move. “We drove all around the South

Les Whiteside

Island before deciding to retire to Blenheim, and we love it. “We were living on the Hibiscus Coast, and what had been a 30 to 40 minute drive to the city eventually became a two-hour crawl. “We eventually made the journey fewer and fewer times. We would leave home at 10am to avoid the traffic and have to be back on the road by 2pm to get home in a reasonable time.” “Now it’s just five or 10 minutes

to get anywhere around town,” Rosey says. Rosey and Michael have been in Blenheim for two years now and have made lots of friends. Michael plays tennis regularly at Pollard Park and Rosey is in a sewing group and is about to become the local Neighbourhood Watch coordinator. “It’s an effort now to go back to Auckland,” Michael says. “We’ve done it only once in the last 12

months.” Data from the 2013 census shows that one in five people living in Marlborough was over 65, and it was the region with the highest proportion of that age group in New Zealand. Between 2006 and 2013, Marlborough’s over-65 population grew by 29.5 per cent, beaten only by two other areas at the top of the South Island - Tasman (up 39.4 per cent) and Nelson (up 30.1 per cent).

TWICE WEEKLY

By Bill McElhinney Every year keen locals around the country visit their beaches during Seaweek to pick up rubbish. Zoe Luffman, a keen 14-yearold Rarangi local, is organising a clean-up at Rarangi on Saturday, from 10am to 12pm. Zoe is then hosting a sausage sizzle for the beach patrollers at the Rarangi Community Centre. Zoe has been looking after the environment since she was seven, inspired to take action after observing the rubbish on her local beach. She has been an active member of Conservation Kids NZ for seven years, the last couple in more of a leadership role helping out with activities for the younger members. “Zoe has organised two well publicised beach clean ups at Rarangi, attracting over 50 people, and regularly supports many other beach cleans,” Department of Conservation ranger Wendy Sullivan says. “She learnt to dive when she was 11, and now gets involved in local

seabed clean ups with the local dive club.” Wendy has nominated Zoe for a Seaweek Ocean Champion award. “Through both her actions and advocacy, Zoe influences not only her peers but adults as well in looking after the ocean environment,” Wendy says. “It’s mostly plastic litter that ends up on the beach,” Zoe says. “At the last beach cleanup we collected a large trailer load of rubbish. And there’s also bottles and cans that people leave behind.” “The ocean is downstream from everywhere,” Wendy says. “When we leave rubbish lying around, wind and water carry it out to sea. “When it rains, litter on our streets gets washed into drains and flows through to streams, lagoons, estuaries and the sea, littering our coastlines and filling up our oceans with plastic. Plastic doesn’t biodegrade, not even biodegradable plastic. It just breaks down, over hundreds of years, into smaller and smaller pieces which enter the food chain.”

Wendy Sullivan and Zoe Luffman are hoping people will turn out to help with the Seaweek beach clean up at Rarangi.

The Marlborough Freshwater Anglers Club will be hosting a river clean-up along the banks of the Taylor River from 10am - 2pm on Saturday. Meet at the Henry St Reserve. Bring solid footwear, gardening gloves, sunscreen and drink/snacks.

DOC staff, Sanfords and NZ King Salmon will be tackling beaches in Queen Charlotte and Pelorus sounds, and the Marlborough Community College will be cleaning up Marfells Beach. Several resident associations in the Sounds are also hosting their own clean ups.

Blenheim Drycleaning has it covered People who lost items when Blenheim Drycleaning was destroyed by fire last Thursday will be covered. “We apologise to all those affected by the fire,” owner Dave Poole says. “We are working with our insurers and if you have lost any property we ask that you contact Jeremy Nolan of Smartpak: email jeremy.nolan@smartpak.co.nz or phone 0800 772 525,” Dave says. In the meantime Dave is working with other providers to set up options to continue to service his local clients, particularly his commercial customers. “We want to thank people for their understanding and patience in the wake of the fire,” Dave says. “We really appreciate all the support and we plan to have a more permanent arrangement in place soon.”

Back row: Ally Avery, Freemasons Azher Mir, Pete Barker, Justin Stevens and centre manager Margaret Beban. Front: Megan Talbot, Pippa Muir, Ian Plummer with the cheque for the heat pumps, McKinley Warren, Chris Williams, Kaedyn Collins, Louis Gorman and Eddie Taylor.

Masons’ gift to Seddon kids By Bill McElhinney Scorching hot summer days have taken their toll on the children and staff at the Awatere Early Learning Centre. The community owned preschool in Seddon is based in what was the Church of the Epiphany, which the group leases from the Anglican Church. “As you can see, there are not many windows that you can open,” Ally Avery says as she walks around the building. “On the 30 degree days the only place where we could get out of

the heat was in the kitchen area. It was too hot outside for the children, and too hot inside the main area of the old church.” But now relief has come, through the generosity of Marlborough Freemasons, who have banded together to raise the funds to install two new heat pumps in the centre. “It’s great,” Ally says. “When they were installed they cranked them up to 32 degrees, then down to a comfortable 22 degrees. “It will make such a difference, as we also have children who take

a nap here during the day.” “We wanted to do something for the local community, and this was a good project,” Ian Plummer, Master of the Awatere Lodge says. The Lodge has a long connection with the district, having started there in 1927. It has since closed the Seddon lodge and moved in to Blenheim, but the members remain active in the Awatere community. “The project was initiated by Mike Hole,” Eckford Lodge master Chris Williams says.

inbrief

“He presented the project and then we went to the Masonic charity in Wellington and they agreed to match us dollar for dollar, so we were able to raise $6100 to get the units installed.” The old church was damaged in the 2013 earthquake, which made the cost of installing new windows prohibitive. “We hope to eventually have a new, purpose-built centre,” Ally says, “and when that happens we can take these units and install them there.”

Clarification An article in The Sun last week on Freemasons donating teddy bears to emergency services referred to Dennis Jackson as the Dunedin Lodge grand master. He is the Lodge master. The Dunedin Lodge No 931 closed and is now domiciled in Blenheim under the same name.

Cultural diversity celebrated By Bill McElhinney Saturday’s Multicultural Festival at Pollard Park was a great success, Migrant Services manager Margaret Western says. “It was more than just a celebration of ethnic foods and dance. It embraced cultural diversity and provided the opportunity for our newcomers to showcase their culture and feel they have a visible and valued place here,” Margaret says. “Marlburians could see the richness of the ethnic mix of people who call Marlborough home, and a great day was had by all. “The face of Marlborough is changing. It’s become a melting pot of different nationalities, all bringing vibrant cultures and traditions into our community,” Margaret says. “Thank you to everyone involved, the performers, stallholders and supporters.” The annual festival, hosted by the Marlborough Migrant Centre, is Marlborough’s acknowledgement of Race Relations Day, which is celebrated throughout New Zealand The Maroi Te Rerenga o te Ra, was one of the opening acts at the Marlborough in March. Scottish Country Dancing to the fore in 2018 By Glenise Dreaver “Dance Scottish” is the 2018 international promotion of Scottish country dancing and local dancers are joining in with enthusiasm. Some 40-50 dancers from Blenheim and Picton will gather at the Whitney Street school hall at 7.30pm on Saturday March 10. Not only will they enjoy an evening of dancing, music and singing, they are inviting anyone interested to come along and share the fun. Organiser Miriam McNamara says they will be geared up for people who don’t know what it’s all about with demonstrations and some teaching for those who want to join in. Doug Mills of Picton is, she says, a fine teacher who is sought throughout New

Zealand for his skills and makes it very easy for beginners. “We are so lucky to have him.” The Scottish theme will continue with Chris McKay’s Address to the Haggis in Gaelic. (He will be making the haggis himself too). Miriam’s husband, Grey Power president Brian McNamara, will also sing a couple of songs. One is certain to be “Peggy Gordon,” she says. “It is just so beautiful.” Miriam is an enthusiast who says the good thing is not just that it’s great for fitness, especially for older people, but that you don’t need a partner. They will be following up on the evening with a beginners’ workshop on a Saturday in autumn, she says.

It’s a bit too early to say. Time will tell if he’s going to be the right choice.

He will need to sell the party and their message, so I’ll wait and see how he goes.

I’m happy with him. I think he was the best choice.

Norm Fowke Glass Extravagance Dear Ed, Relative to the high rates Blenheim has, MDC needs to consider its priorities and its subsequent high spending sprees like a $300,000 bus shelter, a library at Picton as grand as it may be well at least inside, the theatre process and quite a few others to boot. Frankly it is sheer extravagance. The money is not council’s. Rates are money held in trust to be wisely used in the public interest. Don Coyote Blenheim

Breastfeeding in new comfort By Celeste Alexander New mothers at Wairau Hospital’s maternity ward now have some new comfortable chairs to relax in to breastfeed, thanks to the Zonta Club of Marlborough. The club donated $1750 to the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board to purchase four reclining chairs and footstools to use for nursing mothers and their babies. In consultation with charge midwife manager Graham Cross these

chairs were selected as they were comfortable and lightweight, but strong construction made it easy to relocate the chairs throughout the ward as needed. One is also located in the ward’s breastfeeding clinic. A small handover celebration was held at the ward a week ago where midwives and staff met with, and thanked members of the Zonta Club. “We appreciate that the Zonta Club responded to our needs. We would not have been able to purchase

them otherwise,” Graham says. Bridget Orman spoke on behalf of the Zonta Club, saying it was a cause close to their hearts. “Zonta fundraises to provide for projects or not-forprofit organisations which aim to improve the lives of women and their children. We have supported many local causes over the years. “Our primary mission is to raise the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy,” she says.

The streets of Blenheim were flooded as ex-Cyclone Gita swept through last month dumping record amounts of rain.

Summer scorcher and some record rainfall By Bill McElhinney The summer of 2017/18, December to February, will be remembered as one of the warmest on record for Blenheim, Marlborough Research Centre scientists Rob Agnew says. For the 87 year period from 1932 to 2018, only one other year, 1934-35, recorded a warmer summer. The hottest day in Blenheim last month was February 13, with a maximum temperature of 31.6°C. There were another eight days when the maximum temperature was between 25 and 30°C, and six days that reached 30.0°C or greater: two in December, two in January and two in February. The average daily maximum temperature for February of 23.6°C was 0.4°C above the longterm average, Rob says.

Total sunshine hours for the three months of summer were above average. However, this was entirely due to the fact that December 2017 recorded very high sunshine hours. And then the rain came with high rainfall in January and February 2018, sunshine hours were average to below average. The February rainfall total has entered the record books as the highest February total for the 89 years from 1930 to 2018. The previous highest February total was 129.0 mm, recorded way back in 1936, Rob says. The total rainfall for January and February 2018 is the highest January/February total on record for the 89 years from 1930-2018. In an average year it would take until half way through June for 262 mm rain to be received.

International pianist here to play with Marlborough Orchestra By Bill McElhinney The notes come tumbling out as Michael Tsalka’s fingers fly across the piano keys. The award-winning international pianist is rehearsing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Marlborough Civic Orchestra, a talented group of Marlborough musicians playing a selection of strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Michael makes his performance look effortless, although it is really the result of years of rehearsing and performing around the world. Before coming to Blenheim this week, Michael has been in Nelson performing and coaching Nelson musicians. Prior to that he was resident at Auckland University, teaching and performing. Michael and his wife Angelica, a musicologist, live in Spain but spend up to 10 months a year travelling around the world performing, lecturing and teaching. “I love coming to New Zealand,” says Michael,

who has been here four times previously. “I also love working with local musicians, and it has been great working with the Marlborough Orchestra”. Michael has won numerous prizes and awards in Europe, the USA, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. “Although we travel the world and perform on some big stages, I really think it is important to bring the music to smaller venues,” Michael says. He is also looking forward to sampling some of Marlborough’s famous wines. “I love wine, and we drink mainly Spanish red, Rioja, but I am looking forward to the fabulous Ma rlb or oug h wh it e wines. But not until after the concert on Saturday,” Michael says. Also performing in the Saturday concert in the ASB Theatre is the Classical Jazz Quartet, featuring Cathy Irons on violin and Barry Brinson on piano. The pair is the core members of the group,

Boarders at the co-educational college enjoy state-of-the-art facilities and are encouraged to reach their full potential in everything they do, says director of boarding, Dianne MacDonald. “We work closely with the day school to ensure students strive for indi-

vidual excellence in their studies, and embrace the sports and cultural opportunities on offer. We also encourage them to participate fully in boarding life, especially when it comes to the many fun events in our activities programme.” With support from the ‘valued and wonderful’ team of boarding house staff, students at St Andrew’s are encouraged to look after and respect each other, make responsible

choices, show kindness, honesty and courage, she says. “We also value our boarders’ extended families who are always welcome to visit and join us for meals in the dining room.” Please contact registrar Lynn Smith on enrol@ stac.school.nz or +64 3 940 2016 for more information, to register your interest for 2018, or to book a tour of the school and boarding facilities.

Considering midwifery? In an effort to help address New Zealand’s current countrywide shortage of midwives, Ara Institute of Canterbury is holding a series of regional information sessions for anyone considering midwifery as a career, including in Blenheim. The information sessions will be held in Blenheim, March 28 in room A3 at NMIT’s Blenheim campus on Budge Street. In the session there will be discussion on what it’s like to be a midwife and what’s involved in studying the Bachelor of Midwifery at Ara. They will also discuss the opportunities, challenges and rewards of working as a midwife in rural and regional locations. Ara midwifery tutor Lorna Davies says research undertaken by Ara staff in collaboration with three universities in Scotland and New Zealand showed that

education plays an important role in preparing students for rural practice. “All our third year midwifery students undertake a rural placement to enable them to experience the reality of rural practice firsthand,” she says. “Additionally, the blended delivery method we use to teach our degree allows students who live in a rural setting to complete the programme without having to move their family to a city.”

Davies says the satellite method Ara uses to teach midwifery – which links students with locally-based midwifery tutors - is helping to create a stable workforce of home-grown midwives. “The West Coast is a particularly good example of this, with many of our ex-students helping to provide a strong rural midwifery service on the Coast.” For further details visit ara. ac.nz.

Education Fun ways to encourage reading Learning to read isn’t something kids just do at school. There’s a lot you can do at home to help your child improve their reading skills. And some of the activities are so much fun, they may not even realise they’re educational. Here are some tips on how to encourage your child to read. Comic books and graphic novels Illustration rules when it comes to comics and graphic novels. But the words carry the story along. For kids with reading issues, graphics make it easier to follow the action and the text is broken down into bite-size segments. Most important, comics and graphic novels are entertaining. If your child is drawn to them instead of traditional books, don’t stand in the way. They offer plenty of reading practice—and great illustrations too.

There are plenty of fun ways to build reading skills with your children.

Joke books Everyone loves a good laugh. And if kids can get that by reading, it’s a big plus. For struggling readers, joke books can be a compelling way to practice. Cookbooks, menus and online recipes If your child loves cooking and food, menus and recipes can be a fun way to prac-

tice reading skills. They all can provide general literacy practice, but each format also reinforces different skills. Help your child have fun with it. Come up with a cooking project together and read through some recipes for ideas. Or have your child research menus online to help him create an ideal menu for his own future restaurant!

Affordable Excellence Nelson College for Girls offers high quality, affordable education for young women in a very supportive environment. Our Boarding Hostel, Clarice Johnstone House, is a very important part of this. It offers excellent accommodation for up to 150 students, from New Zealand and overseas. This accommodation provides quality for our young women but is priced competitively. For many of our boarders, there are significant opportunities for them to be involved in sporting and cultural activities that would not otherwise be available to them. Our boarding students are part of a very large family, proactively supported by our senior students through

a wide variety of student led activities. Nelson College for Girls has a strong house system and all of our boarders are members of the same house, Whangamoa. They are passionate participants in all house activities in the school and revel in the ‘purple’ house succeeding well.

Our Year 9 – 12 students live in Clarice Johnstone House while our Year 13 students are in the Levels building. This modern accommodation provides them with a more independent living experience, while still ensuring our most senior students play a pivotal role in creating the family atmosphere of the boarding community. O u r boa rders enjoy academic success, make lifelong friendships and enjoy strong connections within the school and its community. For more information please contact CJ House on 03 548 1332 Email: vanessa.white@ ncg.school.nz or visit our website www.ncg.school. nz/boarding.html

Stroke survivor rides into Picton By Celeste Alexander The Marlborough Stroke Club welcomed a very special guest to the region last Thursday and although it was a short visit, it was a source of great inspiration to members. Stroke survivor Julie Milne of Christchurch, a past Forrest GrapeRide participant, cycled into Picton early evening to a welcoming party and pot luck dinner. What’s unique about Julie’s visit is that she began her cycling journey last month in Bluff and intends to ride through to Cape Reinga, finishing around March 24 and covering around 2483km. Her story of survival and determination has inspired many who meet her, local stroke club member Vyvienne Dunlop says. At the age of six Julie survived two debilitating strokes and was unconscious for months. Doctors told her parents to institutionalise her but thankfully Julie’s mother refused. “Her parents were told she wouldn’t walk, talk or even have a job and children. “The fact that today she is

married with two children, has a Masters in Information and Library Studies and is a specialist mental health librarian for the Canterbury District Health Board speaks volumes,” Vyvienne says. “The most important message that she shares is that with support,

stroke survivors and their families can enjoy full lives with success and purpose. “Her message seeks to destroy the stereotype that strokes only affect old people, and leave them bed-ridden and helpless. Just look at what Julie has so far

accomplished... she’s an incredible woman,” she says. The Marlborough Stroke Club presented Julie with a cheque for $500 to go towards her fundraising efforts for the Stroke Foundation.

Race a chance for families to have fun By Bill McElhinney The XRACE, a mystery adventure race where a parent and child aged between six and 14 race together, is coming to Blenheim. “It’s a real, authentic bonding experience,” race director Tamara Hermans says. “The course always rewards the teams that work together,” she says, “which is easier said than done!” Teams must locate and complete 10 mystery challenges; racing the clock and all the other family teams. A team is made up of two people: an adult; dad or mum or a trusted relative or family friend and a child aged between 6 and 14 years of age. The challenges range from physical (like tug-of-war) to mental (like the memory challenge) to knowledge based (like the music challenge). The challenges change from year to

year and course to course. The average distance between challenges is between 250m and 350m, so you do not need to run - a

fast walk or jog will still get your team around the course. “The majority of families are there to enjoy the family experience of being outdoors and completing awesome challenges together,” Tamara says. “This is what the race is all about. “The day a mum gets to race sideby-side with her son, a dad with his daughter, or vice versa. “It’s remarkable to watch and be part of.” The 2018 Blenheim leg is being held Thursday, March 15, at the Amphitheatre at the Taylor River. There are ten challenges to complete, a mix of mystery (not known until the day) and compulsory (known ahead of time and trained for). Families can enter via the event through the XRACE website.
