Harvest time Slow start, but vintage will get busy soon By Bill McElhinney The grape bunches came tumbling off the vines as the pickers swooped down the rows at the Brancott Estate Woodbourne vineyard last week. Pernod Ricard South Island Operations Manager Tony Robb says they are now nearly finished picking grapes for their award winning Deutz Marlborough Cuvee sparkling wine. 2018 grape harvest looking promising Continued from page 1 “The harvest is looking fantastic so far and we are hoping the weather remains kind over the next few weeks,” Tony says. “Winemakers are commenting that the fruit for sparkling wines is the best in years.” Pernod Ricard employs 150 staff in Marlborough, and will be swinging into busy 24 hour shifts at their Riverlands winery in about a week’s time. It’s been a slow start to the 2018 vintage, Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens says. “Chardonnay, pinot noir and lower alcohol sauvignon blanc grapes are being picked first,” Marcus says.
“Sauvignon blanc harvesting will begin in the coming weeks.” It’s a busy time for one of our most important industries. The wine industry in Marlborough directly employs 2350 people and another 2500 are employed in sectors supporting the industry, and that doesn’t include the RSE workforce or vintage cellar hands and other vintage workers, such as harvest truck drivers. Wine companies pay $130 million in wages to local workers and another $695 million is spent buying from suppliers, many of them in Marlborough. The grape growers also pump
another $52 million in to the local economy. “We estimate that there are at least an additional 1000 people in Blenheim, Renwick and Seddon for the harvest,” Marcus says. “It’s a busy time of the year for lots of people, the caterers who supply hundreds of meals for vintage workers, and cleaners, petrol stations and coffee suppliers probably also go into overdrive. Vintage has a big impact here. “As harvest swings in to action on the coming weeks, we ask people to be considerate as grape harvesters and trucks carrying grapes move around the district,” Marcus says.
“Each year we remind the harvest operators of the rules and expectations for harvest, which include covering the loads of grape trucks, showing consideration when travelling as a convoy, which includes leaving sufficient space between tractors and harvesters for people to pass when safe, for harvesters to wash down before travelling between vineyards and of course for grape trucks to take extra care when approaching our many roundabouts and sharp corners. “We also ask for consideration from our very understanding and supportive members of the community at this vital time of the year.”
Waitohi Domain truck park given the green light By Bill McElhinney A truck parking facility on Picton’s Waitohi Doman has been given the green light, and construction began on Monday. The decision to convert the domain to a truck park follows a recent survey conducted by Marlborough District Council, which asked for local feedback on the potential future uses for Waitohi Domain. “A large proportion, 75 to 78 per cent of people who completed the survey were in favour of a truck park being built on the domain,” Marlborough Sounds councillor Nadine Taylor says. “The facility will ease congestion currently created by heavy vehicles parking in Picton streets waiting for the ferries. “Community input in this project has been incredibly valuable.” Nadine says. “We received a lot of interesting
ideas which are still being looked into, including planting options. “We are very mindful of the presentation of the park and will develop a full planting and landscaping plan around the facility and along Dublin Street to beautify the frontage,” Nadine says. Council assets and services Manager Richard Coningham said the domain, once the home of the Waitohi Rugby Club, had significant limitations in terms of its future use. “The site was once a landfill, meaning it contains potentially harmful soil which restricts its use for some activities,” Richard says. Win for consumers Kiwibank has succumbed to consumer pressure and is extending the expiry date of its Prezzy Card from 12 to 24 months. Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin is pleased Kiwibank has finally agreed to extend its short expiry date. Kiwibank’s backdown means all Prezzy Cards sold from 1 March 2018 will have a 24-month expiry date.
Take your time State Highway 1 between Picton and Christchurch is open again after being closed by slips that came down in the wake of ex-cyclone Gita. The New Zealand Transport Agency says the road is open at 7am and closes again at 7.30pm. The road is still down to one lane in a number of places and motorists are advised to allow five and a half hours for the journey.

An idea that stuck - truck company creates stickers for grape harvest By Celeste Alexander A transport company that will be carting grapes during the grape harvest has started placing stickers on the back of their trucks, cautioning motorists that they are loaded with grapes. In an effort to create awareness and prevent grape spills on the roads, Renwick Transport is in the process of placing stickers on the back of 19 trucks that they will be
using for the harvest. The idea came from truck driver Laurie Johnston who made the suggestion after seeing motorists become frustrated with grape trucks driving slower during harvest. “Many don’t realise that these trucks are filled with grapes, and that we have to be cautious when driving. “I’ve seen and heard of motorists
taking chances they shouldn’t around grape trucks and if they’re not more careful, they could end up with a car full of grapes and more spills on the roads. “I talked to a number of people and came up with the idea of signs for the backs of the trucks,” he says. New Picton restaurant Located at the picturesque waterfront of Picton a new restaurant with cuisine from Japan and Thailand has opened this week, the Norimaki Japanese Restaurant. Owned by Udomsak Juchange and Shiho Tamura, Udomsak, who is Thai wanted to open a restaurant for his Japanese wife Shiho, and together they have created the mouthwatering menu. Around 80 percent of the menu will be Japanese they say, with plenty to choose from. There will be both counter food prepared fresh each day, as well as a menu people can order from and the food is made while they wait. “We will be using as much local produce as we can as we want to showcase what Marlborough has to offer, and it will be prepared using traditional flavors and
techniques,” Udomsak says. Our favorite dish is Ramen noodles says Udomsak. This includes; rolled sushi as well as a number of stations, Grill station, Curry station, Soup station, Noodle Station, Stirfry section, Thai Japanese salad station. Trap in wrong place catches young weka A young weka losing its foot in a leg-hold trap in the Marlborough Sounds has prompted the Department of Conservation reminder that such traps should be raised off the ground in areas where there are weka. A member of the public found the weka with its lower leg virtually severed in the leg-hold trap near Havelock. The bird was treated by a vet and was cared for by DOC staff before being released back into the wild at the weekend. “Leg-hold traps should be set at least 700mm off the ground to prevent weka getting caught in them,” DOC Sounds senior biodiversity ranger Phil Clerke says. “Weka are common in the Sounds so these traps should always be raised off the ground in this area or in other places where there are weka and other ground-dwelling native birds,” Phil says. Catching weka in leg-hold traps by not following correct procedures for their use can be an offence, Phil says. “Weka often die from getting caught in leg-hold traps but this weka fortunately is still actively moving around on its remaining foot

Divert State Highway 1 at Rowley Cresent, with a roundabout to Blenheim and a truck bypass over the railway line. A roundabout to Lower Wairau Road. Go straight to the bend in the bank on Roses Overflow, follow the bank then cross Roses Overflow with several large culverts into Rowberrys Road. A roundabout on Dillons Point Road along a vineyard, bridge the Opawa River to a roundabout on State Highway 1 west of the old St Andrews Lodge. Dear Ed, I was driving along Ferry Road, Spring Creek, near Cresswell Street, the other afternoon when the school bus was disembarking secondary school students. One female student suddenly came around the school bus and walked straight out in front of me, head down, texting on her phone. Luckily for her, being a defensive driver by nature and respecting the school bus situation, I was driving slowly, far more so than most and was able to brake only a couple of metres from her. The girl suddenly looked up mid-road, gave me an angry glare and then put her head down and continued across the road. Had it been another motorist doing the legal 50 km/hr she probably would have been in hospital after the impact or in an even worse situation. Deffy Driver Blenheim

Dear Ed, ‘Old Fisho’s’ sympathetic comment towards stingrays being entered in fishing competitions is to be commended and deserves wider application, also embracing large sharks for example. Particularly insensitive has been the persecution of fresh-water eels, the ethos motivating such competitions being vainglory and the fleeting recognition achieved by killing an aged animal subsequently discarded, it being both primitive and an affront to nature and principles of conservation. Fishing should be enjoyed for it’s own sake in an appreciative and sporting manner towards the environment and quarry respectively, that not kept for food being released unharmed if possible. Hunting in NZ, of course, is not subject to such considerations given that all target animals are exotics and have no natural ecological niche in the domestic environment - shoot as many as you can! Dear Ed, Councils keep telling us to conserve water at this time of the year. We should only water our gardens and lawns in the early morning or evening. So why don’t they practise what they preach? Council grounds such as Oliver Park have always had irrigators going in the hottest part of the day, so half the water disappears into the sky. Farm irrigators can also be seen going during the day and the same at the golf course at Pollard Park. Why can’t all this be done when councils suggest it should? Am I missing something here? Council response from Jane Tito, reserves and amenities manager: Council’s investment in maintaining the parks (outlined in Mr Perry’s letter) to a high standard ensures that sport code users can enjoy the parks in Marlborough. This does involve watering during the day to ensure the standard is maintained, especially at Oliver Park where cricket is played. We have several cricket blocks and water is critical to their survival. The majority of council’s gardens are watered in the early mornings or evenings, and we certainly encourage residents to do the same.

Reassurance on Picton water supply by Glenise Dreaver Steve Rooney, Marlborough District Council’s Operations and Maintenance Engineer, says recent concerns about leakage from Picton water hydrants are unfounded. “We actually don’t have as much leakage as in other places. I suspect that because we have eight pressure loggers on hydrants around Picton at the moment, there is some leakage from the hydrants. “When the loggers are screwed on they are not
always a good seal and there can be a minor dribble.” The loggers, which have been removed, are put there to measure water pressure on periods of high demand, “And they are also used to verify existing data on our water supply network model,” Steve said. He reassured Picton residents that the loggers do not affect fire service access to the mains. “We notify the fire service where they are and they can unscrew them if required.”

Sisters to guest star at concert By Celeste Alexander The Blenheim Country Music Club is holding a Concert Day next weekend and headlining the event will be a sister duo from Murchison. Jemma and Jade Gibson have been very successful both as a duo and as solo artists over the years, winning many overall titles and more impressively, the Junior Overall at the New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards in Gore in 2012. In Blenheim, the sisters also won the Intermediate Overall at the Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards last year. Their passion for music has
grown over the years, stemming from their grandparents who were both very involved in the country music scene. Spokesperson Kathy Johnston says the club is thrilled to have ‘scored’ great talent for the concert and hope Jemma and Jade will entice the younger generation to also go along. “It’s a great way to showcase that youth can also aspire to great heights,” she says. The Concert Day will be held on Sunday, March 18 at the Redwoodtown Hall from 2pm. Entry is $5 per person, children and students go free, and afternoon tea is provided.

Local saffron stars in chocolate A Marlborough product has made its way into one of the country’s favourite sweet treats Whittaker’s Chocolate. Reporter Celeste Alexander talks to Dave Pigou who produced the flaky saffron infused salt which is a star ingredient in one of the Whittaker’s Artisan products.
Sitting on Dave’s kitchen table is a pile of Whittaker’s Artisan chocolate and upon closer inspection there’s a uniquely Marlborough componant. The Marlborough Sea Salt and Caramel Brittle with Saffron chocolate in dark chocolate is made using Dave’s ‘Saffron Marlborough Flaky Salt’ which he produces through the Marlborough Saffron Room, a business he owns and operates. He says it all came about when his Auckland based distributor, Little Karoo, presented the product to Whittaker’s as an ingredient to use in their range. “I supplied Whittaker’s with two batches of the saffron flaky salt to trial over a six month period, and in the end they decided to use it with the caramel brittle,” Dave says. Dave found out in November of last year they would be using his product, and when grocery shopping at the beginning of the
year he was delighted to see the final product on the shelf. “It was pretty exciting to see it there on the label. I’ve tasted it and think it’s pretty good too, except I’d prefer a lighter chocolate to the dark they’ve used,” he says. Asked what was involved in the production of his saffron flaky salt, Dave was hesitant to give away any secrets, other than the flaky salt was sourced from Dominion Salt based at the Lake Grassmere refinery and infused with his own saffron extract. “A lot of the saffron is grown here, but I’m having to also source some from outside of the district to keep up with production,” he says. Dave’s number one product has been his liquid saffron extract which he’s been producing for 10 years. “I’ve branched into other products and won a few awards, including a silver medal in a New Zealand icecream awards,” he says.

Growing saffron is something only he in his family does, as well
as growing grapes for Pernod Ricard and Misty Cove. Dave worked alongside his father in the early 80’s converting their property from mixed farming to horticulutre. In 1989 Dave and his family began planting grapes for Babich Wines and have been growing ever since. The idea for Dave to get involved in the saffron industry came from his desire to use the fertile ground between the rows of grapes on his land. “Saffron was an ideal crop for the local climate and soil,” he says. Now on a farm 25km from the
original site, Dave continues to grow high quality saffron and has established a sophisticated saffron production facility - the Marlborough Saffron Room. Saffron is one of the most valuable and expensive spices known worldwide, thanks to its colour, flavour and medicinal properties. It’s derived from the Crocus sativus, commonly known as the saffron crocus. Saffron is the threads (stigmas) from the flower which are collected and dried. Around 250,000 flowers are harvested for one kilo of saffron.

Beads of Courage The Beads of Courage programme provides a physical story of a child’s journey, recognising their strength and courage. Each bead represents a treatment (for example chemotherapy, injections, scans); an experience (hair loss, isolation, fever) or milestone (completion of treatment). The first bead each child receives from their Family
Support Coordinator is a handcarved pounamu bead from Ngai Tahu Pounamu. These beads are unique to the programme in New Zealand and are hand-carved by eight different Ngai Tahu carvers. Brothers and sisters of children with cancer can also participate in the Beads of Courage Sibling Beads Programme. This programme acknowledges positive behaviour and helpful attitudes.

Heart Foundation hosts seminar on Saturday By Bill McElhinney The Heart Foundation is sending a message to Marlborough residents living with atrial fibrillation (AF) – you are not alone. An information session for people living with atrial fibrillation, a heart condition that causes an irregular heart rhythm and greatly increases the risk of stroke, will be held on Saturday at 10.30am in the Nativity Centre, Alfred Street. Heart health advocate Averil West says living with heart disease or recovering from a heart event can be lonely and challenging for many people. “We want to reach out to bring people living with atrial fibrillation and their families together in a warm, supportive environment that allows them to meet, learn and share their experiences,” Averil says. Cardiologist electrophysiologist Dr Daniel Garofalo will discuss the condition, treatments for atrial fibrillation as

Niki scooting across the Alps to raise cancer fighting funds By Bill McElhinney “I’m always up for a challenge,” says 62-year-old Spring Creek woman Niki Collins. And Niki’s next challenge is this weekend, when she sets off to ride her little yellow 50cc scooter over the Southern Alps. The TranzAlpine Scooter Safari is a charity event involving 250 scooters riding 250kms Coast-to-Coast over the Southern Alps from Christchurch to Hokitika to raise funds for the NZ Cancer Society. It’s not an event for the faint hearted - it is designed to be the coldest, longest, hardest, most gruelling and uncomfortable test of endurance on a city scooter. Niki’s friends gave her the scooter and husband Trevor, an engineer, gave it an overhaul and a bright paint job. Niki, who grows grapes on their Spring Creek property, hasn’t had much time to practise on her scooter, so Saturday’s day-long trek will be a challenge. “But I love a challenge,” says Niki. “I’ve been paragliding on the Swiss Alps, so this shouldn’t be scary. Vehicle display best ever for Hospice By Bill McElhinney The sun shone on a sparkling display of vehicles of at the Hospice Vehicle Display at the Waterlea Racecourse on Sunday. “It was our best ever turnout,” organiser Pat Pascoe, from the Classic Motoring Society, says. “We had 450 exhibitors from the Nelson-Marlbor-
ough region, including 61 Jaguars,” Pat says. Plus a large contingent of Fords, Ford Mustangs, Holdens, Zephers, Porsches, vintage cars, trucks and tractors. “And we had a great turnout; around 4000 people came through the gates,” “It was an amazing
crowd and $8,200 was raised,” Hospice Marlborough fundraising and events coordinator Sandy Inwood says. “ We a re ext remely grateful for all the support we’ve had from both the sponsors and the public. “We’ll be back next year – we’ve already got March 10, 2019, booked!”

Wolseley NZ club
The New Zealand Wolseley Car Club held it’s national rally in Marlborough last week, touring the province. On Friday they spent time at the Omaka Classic Cars. Organisers told the Sun members were from North of Auckland to Invercargill and a small contingent from Victoria, Australia took part this year. The Wolseley’s were a popular vehicle for the NZ Police during the late 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s

Varicose Vein Symptoms – And how to treat them! If you think that troublesome varicose veins are always visible, it’s time to think again, because the symptoms associated with venous disease can, in fact, manifest themselves in many ways. While it’s true that varicose veins can present as bulging, blue coloured ropey cords running beneath the surface of your skin, they are not always visible, as they can be located deeper in the leg. We asked Dr David Orsbourn of enhanceskin to elaborate on some of the common symptoms associated with the disease. He said, “Your legs may feel achy, heavy or tired. Or you may feel a burning or throbbing sensation in your legs.” He continues, “If your legs consistently feel uncomfortable when you are sitting or standing for periods of time, and you feel a sense of relief when you elevate your legs, you may be suffering from varicose veins that are not visible.” David also talked about restless legs syndrome, saying, “If your legs are crampy or tingly, particularly at night, check in with me, as these symptoms can often be attributed to Venous incompetence.” If you have visible varicose veins but no longer feel the pain associated with these,
it could be because your brain is sick of registering the ache or heaviness in your legs, so it turns off the transmitters that would normally do this. However, that doesn’t mean the potentially dangerous skin changes associated with your venous disease stop too! All of the painful and visible symptoms associated with your varicose veins can be alleviated with the treatments offered by enhanceskin at the Churchill Trust Private Hospital in Blenheim. Ocean event next challenge inbriefThe Sun for masters swimmers Summer runners
By Bill McElhinney Blenheim masters swimmers are training for the Nelson leg of the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series at the end of this month. The Interislander Big Tahuna takes place on Tahunanui Beach in Nelson, and will take swimmers on a 3km course around the iconic Fifeshire Rock. Other distances on offer include the Step it Up 1km, Give it a Go 500m and OceanKids 200m for 7-12 year olds. “We train either at the Stadium 2000 pool, or in the sea at Picton or Waikawa,” masters swimmer Pete Colbert says. “Ocean swimmers wear
wetsuits, and the challenging part is learning to cope with the wind and the choppy conditions. “The wind can make it difficult and a choppy sea means you can usually only breathe from one side as you swim.” Pete, Jodie Lovell, Phil Jeffs and John Scobie all plan to compete in the event, and Pete, Phil and Jodie have had success with various placing in previous ocean swims. The New Zealand Ocean Swim Series has grown over the years to seven events, held at some of the country’s most unique beaches and waterfronts. The series aims to promote fitness and health

Sun shines on Sounds golf classic The weatherman forecast dark clouds and damp days for the 2018 Bayleys Nopera Bay golf classic, but instead there were blue skies and sunshine for the March 3 and 4 event. Nopera Bay is tucked away under the steep ridge that makes the north shore of Kenepuru sound a spectacular setting. Players ca me f rom Christchurch, Dunedin and even Hamilton to play in the tournament blowing the field out to over 50, probably the biggest field ever assembled since the days of the Godsiff pioneers! On the first day there were a few rounds of note, none more so than club champion Phil Radford hitting an eagle down the eighteenth on the way to equalling his course record
of 67. Paul Middlemiss from Hamilton posted an impressive 69 and surprise package Will Gerard posted 73. On nett, Graeme Bickley raised a few eyebrows with his 54 whilst locals Andrew King, Mike Richards and Mike Watson all broke 60. In the pink corner the Ladies were having a battle royal with Ala Ward from Awatere hitting 80 to place her two clear of Pat Simpson from Westport and Tania Appelman from Motueka. The nett was even closer with Nopera’s own Lynley Sowman leading a group of six players separated by four shots. On Sunday the ladies competition went right down to the wire but Lynley and Ala held on to win the nett and gross overall titles from Allison Oldham and
Pat Simpson respectively. The men’s finale was no less tense with Phil holding off the ever-improving Andrew King by a solitary shot, and Terry Sowman’s second day charge falling just short. Paul Middlemiss took out the gross with another solid round and former champion Gary Oldham from Golden Downs, snuck in as runner up. Organisers say the great weekend would not have been possible without the help of the various local businesses that so generously help not just Nopera Bay Golf Club but the many sports clubs throughout the Marlborough and Tasman region, and on behalf of all those clubs they say a very big thank you.

Firefighters in toughest two minutes in sport The 2018 UFBA South Island Fire fighters Combat Challenge was held on Saturday at Horton Park. Fire fighters from most parts of the South Island competed. The Combat Challenge is like a Firefighter Iron Man and is the most physically demanding of challenges. It’s earned the reputation of being ‘the toughest two minutes in sport’.
Wearing full bunker gear and breathing from a BA set, competitors race against each other and the clock in a series of tasks across the course. The five tasks are: • Climbing a 6 storey tower carrying a length of 70mm 19kg flaked hose • Hoisting a 70mm hose coil 6 storeys
• Chopping using a 4kg shot hammer to drive a beam 1.5 metres • Extending a charged length of 45mm hose to knock down a disc • Dragging a life sized dummy a distance of 30.5m The competition is a test of skill and fitness and simulates the physical demands of real life firefighting to the public.
