Angela does it again - fourth Guinness record

By Bill McElhinney Angela Fredericks’ hands are a blur as the mussel shells fly off her fingers. In just under two minutes she has broken the Guinness World Record for mussel opening for a fourth time, opening 100 mussels in 1 minute and 51 seconds – that’s one every 1.1 seconds. As the crowd of hundreds at the Havelock Mussel Festival on Saturday cheered her on, Angela knocked nearly seven seconds off the record she set last year. Continued page 2. co-worker Aaron Greenhow by just a few seconds. Nikita Grannachan-Maru, also from Kono, won the junior individual competition and Kono teams won both the junior and senior teams’ finals, knocking out Sanford and Talley’s teams. At work at the Kono factory in Riverlands, Angela opens

between 10,000 and 14,000 mussels a day. The world record attempt is all about speed, so it doesn’t matter if the mussels are slightly damaged in the process. But back in the factory its quality that counts Angela, now 31, has been shucking mussels since she was 16.

Seafood samples a treat at pop up market

Around 4500 people celebrated St Patrick’s Day in style at this year’s Havelock Mussel and Seafood Festival. “The numbers were not only up, people stayed for much of the day to see the headline act, The Black Seeds on stage late afternoon,” festival organiser Hans Neilson says.

Hundreds of people called at the pop-up marquees in Bythell Place on Thursday, sampling fresh mussels, Paradise oysters and NZ King Salmon.

“It was a bumper turn-out and the only downside was some stalls were running out of produce. “The success of the day was a tribute to all those involved as well as the effort that went into the wider Aquaculture Week built around the festival,” Hans says. Photo By Lily-Alyce Vercoe

The event was part of Aquaculture Week, organised by the Smart and Connected Aquaculture group, the Marine Farming Association and

the Marlborough District Council, to build a week of activity around Saturday’s flagship Mussel and Seafood Festival at Havelock.

MIke King was happy to spend time talking to the youngsters when he visited Bohally Intermediate school on Thursday.

Mike’s message a big hit with Bohally youngsters By Bill McElhinney There were lots of hugs and high fives as Mike King brought his I Am Hope message to Bohally Intermediate School on Thursday. Mike first gave a talk to the school assembly, telling the kids that it is okay to talk about problems and not bottle them up. “It was really inspiring” principal Shane Campbell says. But as soon as his talk was finished, Mike was mobbed by scores of students who wanted to get up close and share with him. They told him things they probably never told any other adult, and each one was given eye contact and personal attention

from Mike, followed by a hug or a high five. Some just wanted autographs, but many wanted to share personal things and Mike was happy to listen. The comedian and mental health educator brought was visiting Blenheim as part of a four-week campaign, and spoke at a public meeting at Marlborough Girls’ College on Thursday evening. Mike says one of his highlights was meeting a Blenheim boy who remembered him from when he spoke at his school last year. “He just wanted to say thank you and how his life has gotten

Mike, who hosts the famous show The Nutters Club on Newstalk Zb along with psychiatrist Dr David Codyre, says his success in addressing youth suicide in New Zealand is due to his unorthodox method of opening up and connecting emotionally with young people. “We can help our young people when they feel like they’ve hit rock bottom. By listening to them without judgment, without perpetuating the old Kiwi “toughen up mate” attitude, we can show them it’s OK to feel down, lonely, and sad, but that there’s a light at the end of tunnel, there is hope,” Mike says.

a whole lot better since then. So that’s really cool,” Mike says. Mike says 80 per cent of people who have a major crisis in their lives never ask for help, “because they don’t know who it’s safe to talk to”. “Our kids just want to know that it’s OK to have problems and it’s OK to ask for help and now they have someone they recognise as safe.” Mike and seven companions are riding Suzuki 50cc bikes from Cape Reinga to Bluff to raise awareness, encourage openness and to listen without judgment when others come to them seeking help.

Celebrations tomorrow for 5th birthday By Celeste Alexander “It’s been five years, can you believe it?” PAK’nSAVE owners Mark Elkington and Andrea Boock say the past five years have ‘flown by’ since they first opened the doors to their Blenheim store. Tomorrow marks the store’s fifth birthday and as part of their celebrations they look back on their highlights and share what they have in-store for their customers. “First we would like to thank our loyal customers who have found shopping at PAK’nSAVE a great experience. “We wanted to bring New Zea-

land’s lowest prices to Marlborough and after five years I think we have more than achieved that,” they say. One of their more memorable moments in-store was when they held a Frugal Friday promotion in 2014. “We ran Coke at 25cents on a Frugal Friday. We call those days ‘Mad Days’ and that perfectly described the reaction we got... it went nuts! “It’s been exciting to watch the development of the Westwood retail park, and we are really looking forward to welcoming Kmart here soon. It has been amazing being

able to support so many community activities and seeing our staff flourish in a new environment has been a real pleasure,” they say. There will be some great ‘five’ themed deals on offer for customers tomorrow including giveaways and a prize draw also with a five theme. There will also be a free sausage sizzle from 11.30am - 1.30pm. “We will be giving away 100 $5 gift cards throughout the day plus there will be an opportunity to enter a prize draw for a $500 gift card, five $100 gift cards and five Easter eggs. We look forward to seeing you on the day,” Mark and Andrea say.

PAK'nSAVE owners Mark Elkington and Andrea Boock are thrilled to be celebrating the store's fifth birthday tomorrow.

past 11 years, so he knows what he’s talking about. “Climate change won’t help,” Roger says. “When it gets warmer, there are more bugs about. “We started getting busy earlier this year in the wake of a mild winter.” If you have a compost heap in your back yard, you’ll have lots of flies, Roger says. Apparently flies have only two jobs – to breed and feed, and they do both very well. If they’re not breeding, they’ll be flying around foraging for food. And they breed even more in the warmer weather. Abby and Roger Abernethy and their daughter, Raewyn LamRoger with his wife ond, are the team behind Abernethy Pest Control. Lots of flies, ants, cockroaches around your place this summer? You can blame the weather. And it’s not likely to get any better.

They weren’t kidding, Val: Blenheim Toyota You’re off to Fiji for free

USED CAR DEALS

Noel Templeton was pleased to give Val Blaylock the news she had won a trip to Fiji. Val will be taking her stepdaughter Nicola Harvey with her when she heads off some time in June.

By Bill McElhinney Val Blaylock thought it was a hoax when she got the call about winning a trip to Fiji. “I didn’t believe it at first,” Val says, “but it was a wonderful surprise!” Val got the call after a recent visit to Noel Templeton Optometrists in Blenheim. Staff there had filled out a form for her and entered her in a national competition run by Essilor New Zealand, the

company that supplies lenses to the business. “Anyone that bought transition lenses could go in the draw,” Helen Nicholson from Noel Templeton says. “It’s a nation-wide thing, so we were thrilled when somebody from Blenheim won it.” “It was a really nice surprise,” Val says. “I’ve never been to Fiji, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Val will take her stepdaughter, Nicola Harvey, with her for three nights at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa at Denarau Island in Fiji. “I’ve needed glasses for some years now,” Val says. “When I was working at Flight Timber I gradually found it was getting harder to read the computer screen. “Updating my glasses has certainly paid off this time!”

Cops swoop on dope By Bill McElhinney Police and the defence force have joined up again for their annual swoop on cannabis growers. Helicopters and crew f rom t he Roya l New Zealand Air Force’s No.3 Squadron have been flying over Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast over the last few weeks and have seized about 10,000 cannabis plants. About 68 per cent of the cannabis plants seized and

destroyed came from the Tasman region, detective senior sergeant Scott McGill says. A raid on a West Coast property netted the biggest haul for this phase of the operation – 500 cannabis plants and 1.3 kilograms of dried head and leaf. Thirty firearms and more than $50,000 in cash were also seized during the operation. It was another successful operation and police could

not have done it without the defence force, Scott says. “The areas where growers are cultivating cannabis are remote and so the air support is vital,” Scott says. “It has dealt a blow to those engaged in these illegal activities. But more importantly, about 10,000 cannabis plants have been destroyed and will no longer be marketed in our communities, especially to our young people.”

Truck By-pass Dear Ed, Chanced to pick up the Blenheim Sun on visiting and read Bruce McLachlan’s letter: Bypass State Highway 1. His letter made good sense. My experience is of a painfully slow route for travellers through Blenheim heading south, aggravated by trucks having to negotiate the roundabouts and thus congesting traffic. We have the exact same problem in Oamaru, the only difference being it is a hell of a lot longer going through Oamaru. The old bogey of retail businesses losing customers should a bypass be built is not true. Many towns now have bypasses. If I want a meal or a bed or just shop, I’ll turn off. What does the Marlborough council think? It should be advocating for a truck bypass. I bet truckies and local motorists would both be happy. L. Hore Oamaru

47 Grove Road, Blenheim • www.viridianglass.co.nz

Letters to the editor Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even when a nom de plume is provided for publication.

The editor reserves the right to abridge letters or withhold letters from publication. Email them to news@blenheimsun. co.nz or send a fax to phone 577 -7863. Please note that your name and street address MUST be provided with emails.

Council spending Dear Ed, So rates are going up 4 percent. What sort of council do we have? By council I am including staff, because it seems that’s where the crackpot ideas come from. This council is “penny wise and pound foolish” - in modern terms “cent wise and

dollar foolish.” Look at some of the crazy ideas. A $300,000 Blenheim bus shelter with a hole in the roof. I’m sure the theatre is nice and enjoyed, but the money process was a shambles with council forced to gift $5 million, and spending $6.5 million on a parking building.

Remember the $650,000 for the concrete pocket park in Queen Street? Living beyond its means I think it’s called. I am sure readers can quote a few more examples that are behind the rate rise. Brassed Off Blenheim

Poor excuse to Pyrolysis plant - beware waste water Dear Ed, Re Nigel Perry’s letter on water wastage and the reply from Jane Tito, Marlborough District Council. The CSIRO in Australia confirmed way back in the late 1970s that the best time to water was either late evening or early morning, as the ground absorbed and held the water better and fewer weeds were promoted. To use the excuse that is the best way to keep the cricket ground in top condition is fallacious, as this is not the case at the WACA or any of the other world class cricket grounds in Australia. There is no need to water during the day, where up to 40 per cent will be lost on a hot day. New Zealand wastes far too much of this precious commodity. The council needs to set a good example before promoting water meters. Chris Davies Picton

Dear Ed, We have been told that a pyrolysis plant that is successfully operating in Timaru is the basis of the plant that is proposed for Blenheim. This is not true as the Timaru plant is not used to burn treated wood. Whereas the proposed pyrolysis plant for Blenheim will be burning treated

grape posts. Blenheim is being used as a ‘trial’ with absolutely no proof that this is a safe way of disposing of CCA treated timber. Please can the vineyard owners, who are the producers of these broken posts, take full responsibility for the safe disposal of them, and not involve the residents of Blenheim.

Why should we live in a poisoned atmosphere as well as paying for the disposal of their grape posts through our rates? Please Blenheimites, the submissions are now open to speak against this plant being built, no matter where you live in town – make a submission against this. The Watchman

Blenheim bypass Dear Ed, I agree with Bruce Mclauchlan’s letter, road problems need to be solved not created. A new bridge over the Opawa won’t alter the traffic on Grove Road, or through town. Putting more workers’ accommodation in Budge Street will only put more traffic on to Grove Road as well and still will not solve the problem of only one exit to Budge Street. A lot of wine trucks all have to go through town to get to Riverlands, as do ferry trucks going south. If Blenheim wants to be a tourist town, a bypass would go a long way to that end. M. Whitmee Blenheim

Anti-exotica phobia Dear Ed Oh dear, Walter Hilhorst has caught the very contagious “anti-exotica phobia.” He wrote of hunting saying “all target animals are exotic and have no ecological niche—shoot as many as you can!” Walter does not understand how ecological relationships evolve. Deer have been here for 150 years. Besides, scientists have likened deer browsing to moa browsing. There were, according to eminent ecologist the late Dr Graeme Caughley, six million moa. Landcare Research says there are 250,000 (0.25 million) wild deer. Walter needs to face ecological reality. Trout and deer are part of the 21st century ecosystem. Besides, are not humans, sheep, cows, potatoes and pumpkins all introduced, which we see as valued species? Eco-Sense Blenheim

Crowds turn out for Irish celebration

By Bill McElhinney It was standing room only at Biddy Kates Irish bar on Market Street on Saturday evening as crowds flocked in to celebrate St Patricks Day. “It was fantastic,” bar owner Terry Sloan says. “We had a really happy time” “The Irish dancing girls set the tone for the evening with family

and friends turning up to watch. Then later on entertainer Damon Ward had the place rocking. “He’s not just a singer, he’s an entertainer,” Terry says. “The crowd really loved it. “It’s our busiest day of the year and we put in some big hours, but it’s great to be able to share the occasion with so many people.”

Hundreds of Renwick locals came together at the weekend to celebrate their village in the heart of Marlborough’s wine country. In its third year, the 2018 Harvest Celebration, which is organised by the Renwick Smart and Connected Wine Connection Working Group, aims to bring the community together to mark the end of the growing season and the upcoming harvest. “Renwick is very proud of its local wine growing activity,” councillor Cynthia Brooks says. “We want to build awareness amongst the community and the younger people about how lucky we are to live in a region that produces a highly cultural crafted product that is celebrated globally. “The harvest celebration is run by local Renwick wineries, for locals.” Cynthia says. “It’s a great gathering for the township with local cafes, restaurants and the butchery on hand to provide delicious food, while Nivan musicians added to the wonderful atmosphere. “It was such a success we’re already looking forward to making next year’s event even bigger and better,” Cynthia says.

$700 this year

By Bill McElhinney Good news for senior New Zealanders – the government is going to help pay your winter power bills. However, you won’t be getting $700 this year, as some media commentators have claimed. The new winter energy payment, aimed at helping older people and people on a benefit stay warm through winter, kicks in on July 1 and runs through to September 30. The rate for single people (with no dependent children) will be $20.46 a week, and couples or people with dependent children will get $31.82. Next year the payment will begin earlier, on May 1, and run for five months to September 30, but this year it’s only for three months, so couples will be getting a little over $381. When fully implemented, the annual payment will be $450 for single people with no dependent children, and $700 for couples or single people with dependent children. “We wanted to make sure it was as easy to implement

and efficient to implement as possible,” Finance Minister Grant Robertson said, defending the decision not to means-test the payment. “If somebody doesn’t believe they need it they can opt out.” The total package will cost $1.8 billion a year. It will be paid automatically to everyone getting NZ Super, Veteran’s Pension, Jobseeker Support, Sole Parent Support, Supported Living Payment or a Youth Service Payment. It won’t affect other payments such as Disability Allowance, Accommodation Supplement, Temporary Additional Support or Childcare Assistance And you don’t have to pay it back. But if you’re planning on a winter holiday in a tropical paradise, you may miss out. Eligibility will be conditional on people being largely resident in New Zealand over the winter months. Anyone absent from the country for more than four weeks will not receive the payment unless they return home during the eligibility period.

Show folk would love youto step into the ring By Bill McElhinney It’s one of the highlights of the year for hundreds of us, the time when town and country come together to celebrate the best of Marlborough. It’s the Marlborough A & P Show, which is held in early November each year, a celebration of rural and urban communities getting together for entertainment, competitions, and displays. Organising such a big event is the task of the show committee, a group of about 20 volunteers who meet on the third Wednesday of every month at the committee rooms at the showground in Maxwell Road. “Each committee member has a responsibility for different sections of the show,” says committee member Fiona Higgins. Fiona, whose interests include

sewing and craft, has been helping out for the past five years and really enjoys it. “There are so many different interests with the show,” Fiona says. “There are the horses, farm animals large and small, there’s shearing, home based competitions for handcrafts, photography, and baking, also school handcraft competitions and displays. “Then there are the many trade sites with a range of products and services, and the food and display sites. It’s the biggest agricultural event on the Blenheim calendar.” Fiona says some of the committee members have been involved for 30 or 40 years, and although many have a rural background, it’s not a prerequisite to be involved with the show. “What we would really like is

to have some younger people join us,” Fiona says. “We’d love to have some new ideas. The show has been going for 148 years, and we want our 150th to be a special event. “We would love people who have an interest in any of the many things featured at the show to come and help us, suggest new things, bring some freshness. And we want to be able to attract families.” The show brings together a

variety of people from across the region, Fiona says, and she enjoys seeing what people create and uncovering the wealth of talent in the province.

This year we have helped the Women’s Refuge and St John.” Friendly societies were initially formed as clubs for working people, set up to help members in times of illness and death. Members paid a regular fee which entitled them to free medical care and subsidised medicines, before the state funded or covered these costs from the late 1930s. In the early 20th century their role expanded to include free medical consultations and cheaper medicines at UFS pharmacies.

By Bill McElhinney “This came just at the right time!” Chris McConway, a volunteer with the Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, was pleased to receive a $500 cheque from Cherie Lockhead and Chris Furness, from the Blenheim United Friendly Society, on Friday. “This will help us buy some new night goggles, which we really need. One pair we have is broken and we desperately need a replacement,” Chris says. The rescue helicopter flew on 531 missions last year, and nearly half of those were in Marlborough, many in outlying areas, Chris says. “We’re a community lifeline; if something happens, we’ll be there to help you,” Chris says. “We really appreciate the support we get from Marlborough. Keep warm with insulated curtains Insulated curtains... what are they and do they help with heat loss? There are two major benefits from using insulated curtains. Firstly, insulated curtains help control room temperature. They add an extra layer of protection over your windows which are almost always the leading source of heat loss or exchange in your home. They also help to hold the heat in the house. Then during the warm summer months these window coverings will block out the sun’s heat so you can use less air conditioning.

Since cooling and heating are big contributors to a household’s overall electric bill, the benefits from installing insulated curtains can be significant. Tips for curtains To provide good insulation

your curtains should: • Be floor-length and touch the floor, or have pelmets above them with only a minimal air-gap between the top of the curtain and the pelmet (sill-length curtains are ineffective) • Fit tightly against the wall or window frame • Be wider than the window frame • Preferably be double layered with a thick lining. • Net-curtains installed very close to the window, and in contact with the window frame, can be effective too.

Is your wood ready to burn? With April knocking at the door it’s a timely reminder to check that you have enough firewood for winter. It’s important to remember that you should only be using dry wood that will burn clean and efficiently. Green wood cools the fire and creates smoke that adds to air polution. Freshly felled hardwoods can take up to 18 months to dry so when purchasing firewood, be sure to keep a receipt and make sure it’s dated with the supplier’s name and address, the type of wood, quantity delivered and price. To test your wood to see if it’s ready to burn, throw a small piece onto hot glowing coals. If it catches fire on the top and sides within one minute, it’s dry enouch to burn well.

Check your electric blanket ENGINEERING INNOVATION

New season, new curtains. Talk to the experts.

38 Main Street, Blenheim • ph 578 7900 • www.guthriebowron.co.nz

With all of the technological advances in today’s modern world, how often do you remember to check electrical devices for faults? In particular, when was the last time you checked your electric banket? It’s that time of year where people venture into their storage cupboards, seeking out their thick, heavy duvets and of course, their electric blankets. The thing is, that without proper care and use, they can become an unexpected fire hazard. The biggest concern are the wires and other components flowing through the blanket. Electricity goes into these wires to heat it and warm the bed. But anytime electricity is present there’s the ever present danger.

Check that your electric blanket is safe to use before placing it on the bed.

All it takes is one wire to be pierced, shorted or frayed and you have a fire. Crimped cords or wires can also cause hot spots that turn into fire hazards, so before turning it on, it’s important to know your electric blanket is in good working order. At the first sign of wear, or just for peace of mind,

have your electric blanket checked by a qualified electrician. Replace your electric blanket every five years with newer heat protected designs which are safer. When in use don’t place heavy objects on the bed while the blanket is on and make sure it’s always flat on the bed.

Grid Tie Solar Energy Solutions Marlborough’s #1 Solar Energy Solution Become energy efficient this winter.

Prep now, stay cosy later Yes, that’s a cooler temperature you are feeling at night and in the morning, and a timely reminder that you should be checking your winter preparations around the home. There’s a whole list of things to check throughout the home, from curtain functionality through to having dry wood stacked and ready to burn. First and foremost, the home’s heating system should be checked as this

is what provides warmth and comfort, and where the dollars are spent in winter. Whether it’s a woodburner or heatpump, having the professionals come in to change out filters, clean chimneys and flues and look over the actual woodburner can save you time and money in the long run. Another area to look at is the hot water cylinder. The cold weather can sap energy from your hot water cylinder so to prevent this,

it’s recommended that you cover your heater with an insulating blanket. During the day, make sure you take advantage of the sun’s heating potential. Open your curtains or blinds during the day to let the sun’s light and heat in, but once the sun goes down don’t forget to close them as the extra barrier of fabric or wood helps to insulate the home.

Derry rides luck to claim Otago River race Blenheim’s John Derry rode Lady Luck to victory at the SBT Otago Rivers Jet Boat race over the weekend to claim the title in dramatic fashion. The New Zealand No 1 won the nine leg event by 15 seconds thanks largely to main rival Queenstown’s Regan Williamson “jumping the start” on the penultimate leg. The error saw John gain 59 seconds on the then leader and leapfrog him into first in the process. The event was raced on three rivers, the Clutha, Dart and Matukituki.

John finished with a time only 1:54:22 to Regan’s 1:54:37. “We got lucky that (Regan), a good friend and rival, jumped the start at the crucial moment and he got a time penalty which allowed us to control things from there. “The Otago rivers are home territory for Regan so we knew he’d have local knowledge and we were largely playing catchup for most of the weekend.” The first leg on the Matukituki River saw Regan extend his lead over John by 43 seconds which looked like it would be good enough for victory. “I was happy with how my boat was going, we just picked

the wrong line and it cost us time,” John says. The two-time world champion and five-time New Zealand No 1 says race conditions were terrific after the opening leg of the event was cancelled due to high winds. John says he will continue to race the five-leg South Island series which will continue with the Canterbury leg next month. “I actually enjoy the river racing more than the international stuff because it’s more relaxed so we’ll compete in this around the South Island and then put some work into the boat in the garage over winter.”

Golf girls didn’t expect shootout before dinner By Bill McElhinney When golfers Barbara Thompson and Lyn Broad turned up for dinner at the Marlborough Golf club house last Wednesday evening, dressed in their finery, they weren’t expecting to have to get their clubs out. But that’s just what happened. Barbara, from Waimakariri and Lyn, from Mirimar, were tied in the intermediate section of the Allan Scott Family Wines tournament with scores of 91 gross. So they had to get their clubs out for a chip and putt shootout. “Both performed superbly in front of a packed gallery,” tournament committee member Janet Leith says, “and Barbara came out the winner. “The winner of three divisions came away with a $500 voucher from Allan Scott Family Wines – well worth playing for,” Janet says. “We hosted to 160 ladies from all parts of the country and half a dozen from Australia for the tournament and the weather was perfect for all three days.” Results. Wednesday senior gross: Suzette Eastmond, Omaha Beach, 81, 1; Natalee Reed, Greenacres, 82, 2; Annette Muir, North Shore, 84cb, 3; June Maslin, Marlborough, 84, 4; Tracy Bary, Rarangi, 85, 5; Linda Nightingale, Titirangi, 86cb, 6; Lyn Batchelor, Kaikoura, 86cb, 7.
