Happy Easter

By Celeste Alexander Brothers Tyquin (5) and Lennox Radka (18months) are all geared up for their family's Easter egg hunt on Sunday. It's a family tradition to hunt around for chocolate eggs and this year Lennox will enjoy it for the first time. Mother Leanne Radka says the Easter Bunny leaves chocolate eggs around the house rather than the garden, to stop the family dog Bailey from getting to them. "The boys will love hunting around with their wee baskets and they have a lot of fun," she says.

Kiwi wine drinkers say Yealands their favourite By Bill McElhinney “I’m really chuffed about this,” Yealands Family Wines founder Peter Yealands says with a grin. New Zealand wine drinkers have voted Yealands wines their favourite New Zealand wine brand in the Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2017. The People’s Choice Award, run by New Zealand Winegrowers, gave the public the chance to choose their favourite wine brand, and they chose Yealands. “This is better than having your wine put in front of five wine judges,” Peter says. “It’s nice to impress the public rather than just impress the judges. “I’m so proud of everyone at Yealands for all their passion and hard work, and commitment to making wines that are enjoyed by so many people. “We know we have a lot of customer loyalty and this just proves it. “We think that because we are locally owned, a family company employing local people, that also counts. “And we are working hard to produce our wine on a sustainable basis. I think people appreciate that.” Yealands are recognised internationally for their sustainable and innovative practices across their entire winemaking process, and are regarded as the most sustainable winery in New Zealand. “It’s heart-warming to hear that New Zealanders have voted for us as their favourite New Zealand brand, especially as our company’s not even 10 years old; it shows we’re doing something right! Cheers to everyone who voted for us.” Yealands Wines, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in August, employs 160-170 staff. “Some people thought I was a bit crazy when I started developing vineyards out here at Seddon,” Peter, an entrepreneur

and fifth generation Marlburian says. “But I knew the land was good. There were challenges, of course, especially in planting vineyards on rolling hill country, but we can look back now and see success. “We’re just starting to get stuck in to vintage,” Peter says. “We’ll be flat out harvesting grapes from now on. Just hope the weather holds!”

Angela Willis at New Zealand Winegrowers says she is delighted at how many New Zealanders supported the new People’s Choice Award. “We initiated the People’s Choice as we wanted to engage Kiwi wine drinkers in the Air New Zealand Wine Awards and acknowledge the role they play supporting the New Zealand winemaking industry,”

Angela says. “We are delighted with the level of support we received this year and it was heartening to see so many wineries supporting the voting and so many Kiwi wine lovers getting involved. “Congratulations to Yealands for collecting the inaugural People’s Choice Award.”

Fire fighters will clean up before big stair challenge

Plenty of rain Marlborough saw a significant fall of rain over the weekend with Wednesday 21st being the highest, providing us with 18.4 millimetres. The following days of weather also provided a substantial amount with Thursday 22nd of 13.4 millimetres and Friday 23rd with 13.8 millimetres.

By Bill McElhinney Up and down the stairs, up and down the stairs . . . Seddon fire fighters Jonathan Everett, Malcolm Clemett and Kat Watson are in the Blenheim parking building in Alfred Street, wearing their kit, and running – up and down the stairs. The trio are competing in the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge, an annual fundraiser for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. Each year fire fighters from around New Zealand and international competitors from Australia, the US, Chile and Germany compete in this gruelling event at Auckland’s Sky Tower. Wearing full fire fighting kit and breathing apparatus, which weighs up to 25kg, the competitors race up the Sky Tower, the tallest building in the southern hemisphere. There are 51 flights of stairs, 1,103 individual steps and last year’s winner climbed the 51 flights in just under 10 minutes. “It’s tough,” Malcolm says. He’s done it several times before and his best time was just over 15 minutes. “But we’re really doing it to raise money for a good cause,” Jonathan says. Last year the fire fighters raised a record $1.25 million for the charity, which does not receive government funding. The national charity supports patients and their families living with blood cancers and related conditions. Every day six New Zealanders are diagnosed with blood cancer, The stair challenge this year takes place on Saturday, May 19, and as well as training, the Seddon team is also raising funds to get them up to Auckland to compete in the challenge. “We need to raise about $1500 each,” Malcolm says, “so on Friday we’re running a car wash from 10am at the Seddon station, just behind the supermarket. “You can get your car cleaned up nicely for $5, or more if you want to make a donation. “We’ll have a bouncy castle for the kids, a sausage sizzle and Mr Whippy will be there. So come along and help us support a good Seddon fire fighters Kat Watson, Jonathan Everett and Malcolm Clemett are training hard for the Sky Tower Stair Challenge. cause,” Malcolm says.

Special Easter service Marlborough churches combine in to have a special Easter service with musical production focusing on Easter. Suitable for all ages. Come along to the ASB Theatre at 10.30am on Friday.

Earth Day celebrations A&P Park will host celebrations for Earth day by bringing together families, businesses, and community leaders to highlight all things sustainable and green. The event has free entry for all ages. April 21st 10am-3pm.

Aero club birthday Marlborough Aero Club turns 90 years old in July. Being the first club in New Zealand to have its own plane, they plan to celebrate by reuniting those with the planes that have ultimately contributed to their success. With a membership over 350 people, The Aero Club remains enthusiastic by making sure they are keeping the fun in flying. They celebrate over the weekend of the 6th, 7th, 8th of July.

Bohally goes Blue for Plunket By Megan Connolly The grey weather doesn’t stop Nate Washer and his mum, Lisa Washer, and the kids at Bohally from putting on their blue clothes and face paint in support of Plunket. Nate Washer, a student at Bohally and a Plunket Baby himself, has been planning a blue day to raise funds for Plunket ever since he saw an advertisement two weeks ago. “I thought it would be a cool thing to do because you have to do a MP Challenge, which means My Personal challenge,”

Nate says, “and also my favourite colour is blue”. Along with making at least 10 posters to go around the school, Nate spoke in front of his peers at assembly, walking up to ‘I’m Blue’ by Eiffel 65. His mum, Lisa, has been a Plunket Volunteer in the past saying “often it’s harder to speak in front of your peers than strangers, especially if you’re shy, so he did really well.” All the students donate a gold coin or whatever they can and then best dressed boy and girl

Nate himself donated a $10 note to keep with the blue theme. “I was so impressed when I heard that Nate wanted to do a ‘Blue Day’ fundraiser for Plunket,” comments Samantha Dodds from Plunket. “It was very heart-warming”. What’s raised from Nate’s Blue Day will be going towards supporting Plunket services like playgroups, parenting courses, while providing education and Bohally kids fundraising for Plunket with a 'Blue Day'. Ladies get kick out of helping RDA By Celeste Alexander Horses at the Riding for the Disabled - Marlborough Group will have more winter blankets to keep cosy under thanks to a donation from the Picton Women’s Institute. The group ran a fundraising raffle at the Mariner’s Mall last year which helped them to put together a $300 donation. Picton Women’s Institute president Fran Hartley and secretary Jill Vercoe met with RDA Marlborough manager Helena van Velthooven last Thursday to present the money. They say they have both seen first hand the ‘good work’ done by the RDA and wanted to help. “I know $300 isn’t a huge amount, but we hope it goes

towards helping in some way,” Fran says. According to Helena the money will be put towards new winter blankets for the horses and some towards a new marquee for use out in the community. “Every little bit helps and we are so grateful,” she says. This year the Picton Women’s Institute is celebrating 87 years and has 28 members. The women gather once a month where they enjoy social time together, craft and floral competitions and provide support to one another. They are keen to hear from more women, particularly some ‘younger’ interested in joining. Trailer loads of rubbish hauled off our beaches By Bill McElhinney The second massive Marlborough clean up was a success, thanks to increased support from the Marlborough community. Around 200 people spent over 430 hours picking up rubbish, and around four trailer loads of rubbish were collected at various beaches throughout Queen Charlotte and Pelorus Sounds, Rarangi and Marfell beaches, and sections of the Taylor River and Wairau diversion. Rubbish included the typical collection of polystyrene, ropes, fishing lines, tyres and bottle tops. The multi-group, multi-location clean-up was part of Seaweek, and Department of Conservation ranger Wendy Sullivan is pleased so many

people and groups got behind the event, by either joining a public clean up or by hosting their own. “It can be a bit disheartening just doing one small area, when you know there is so much more rubbish out there,” Wendy says. “By hitting multiple areas, it feels like we are making a difference.” There were three public events at Picton foreshore, Taylor River and Rarangi beach. The public events were hosted by volunteers from Conservation Kids, Marlborough Freshwater Fishing Association, and keen 14-year-old volunteer Zoe Luffman, who organised the public beach clean-up at Rarangi.

“We had over 80 people turn up with people coming from all over Marlborough, including some who were on holiday from Tasman!” Zoe says. The Whatamango Community Association also joined in for the second year, and 30 teachers and students from Marlborough Community College tackled Marfells Beach. Businesses also got in behind the initiative. Waikawa Dive Centre undertook a dive clean up around the Picton foreshore, and New Zealand King Salmon undertook clean ups at six sites in the outer Sounds. Sanford staff joined DOC on their staff working bee, cleaning up Mahakipawa Arm and Kaituna Estuary.

College teacher joins select Globe group By Bill McElhinney Girls’ College teacher Shalom Del’Monte-Aberhart is excited. “I’m going to The Globe Theatre,” she says with a grin “I’ve been chosen to represent New Zealand in a teacher development programme at the Globe Theatre in London in July! “It’s a great honour for me and it will have direct benefits for the young people of Marlborough that I work with.” Shalom will get to work with some of the United Kingdom’s leading education practitioners both at the Globe Theatre and in schools around Southwark, London. Towards the end of the programme Shalom will be part

of the cast that will deliver an extract from Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale on the Globe stage. Shalom, an English and drama teacher at Girls’ College, is also the regional coordinator for the Shakespeare Globe Centre of New Zealand Shakespeare Festival. “I will be able to share my

skills when I come back,” Shalom says. “I work with Marlborough youth in theatre and at school, and I will be able to share the skills with other adults through my involvement with the Havelock and Picton Little Theatres.” Shalom is now busy fundraising for her London trip and one of her ventures is a quiz night at the Woodbourne Tavern at 7pm on April 6. “A team of up to eight can get a table for $160, and there will be prizes, raffles and auctions,” Shalom says. “A light supper is included.” If you want to support Shalom and grab a ticket, you can give her a call on 027 644 1513 or email peaceprincessrose@gmail.com

Dear Ed, I have to admit that I am following the demonstrations against the mandatory use of bicycle helmets with a mix of both amusement and bewilderment. In the United Kingdom bicycle helmets are not required to be worn by law yet the British Medical Association advocates the compulsory use of helmets. Cyclists’ Touring Club, the largest cycling advocacy organisation in the UK, consider helmet wearing as personal choice rather than being mandated by legislation. Having said that, two British mates of mine had bike accidents. One was knocked clear out of his bike, hit the pavement head first, and did not remember anything else from the ordeal. He was wearing a helmet which split in two.

Why raise rates? Dear Ed, I see that much mention is being made about a possible forthcoming four per cent rate increase. But I ask how can this be? Put simply, with all properties having been significantly increased in value by QV, the council’s valuers, the Marlborough District Council will be in for a windfall. So my question would be: Why the need to increase rates at all? Concerned rate payer Picton

Thank you

The doctors at the hospital told him that he was lucky to be alive, and that instead of a cracked helmet he should have sustained a cracked head with his brains plastered all over the pavement. The second mate was also riding a bike but he was not wearing a helmet. He fell and hit his head very hard. End result? He stayed in an induced coma fighting for his life whilst allowing his

brain to rest and swelling to decrease. He did, however, sustained some brain damage resulting on him being unable to ever again hold a full time job, long term memory loss, short term memory loss and a very long road to recovery. The above two examples spell a very clear message as far as I am concerned, namely: Helmets do matter. Mariano Arias Picton

How to play the game of cricket Dear Ed, When I was a boy of about twelve, I bought a book written by Don Bradman ‘How to Play Cricket’. I still have it 70 years on. Nothing was ever mentioned about sandpaper or carpet bowls. Perhaps your Sports page scribe might like to contact Brian McKechnie and chat to him about ‘How They Play Cricket’.

Currently a bestseller is “How to play cricket, by Smith and Chappell, with forward by David Warner. The book is amply illustrated and updated with the ‘Bancroft Technique.’ ...and the Aussie press would have you believe we live in the era of the new Bradman. Bill Bloggs, Miami, Qld

Dear Ed, I would like to thank all the people that came to my aid last Friday 23rd March outside the back of Postie Plus. I had an awful fall and didn’t know much about it but the pain was really bad, talk about seeing stars. One man took off his jacket and put it over me, someone rang for the ambulance, I could hear a lot of people talking and the ladies took me into the cafè. The nurses and Doctor Tiger were wonderful and my face looked so terrible, getting better now. Thank you very much everyone. Barbara Jones Blenheim

Bypass road Dear Ed, In the very early days they were going to put a bypass road from Mills Ford and Main Road corner, Grovetown, down Vickerman Street, across Dillons Point. There was a paper road, through farm lands, acrossthe Opawa River to come out at Rilverlands SH1 at Hardings Road. Montana tanks and barrel room are there now. This was stopped because of shipping up the Opawa River. Later on the businesses thought they could force people to stop and spend money. That has never worked because people can get to Kaikoura or Christchurch before dark. Old Codger Blenheim

Zarna Blossom, Denise Mitchison and Minnie Higgins have come together to create Pink Packets.

Helping to end period poverty for women By Celeste Alexander A group of local women have come together to find a solution to what they describe as ‘period poverty’, where women and teenage girls cannot afford, and go without sanitary products. Zarna Blossom, Minnie Higgins, Denise Mitchison and Christal Henderson have been working hard behind the scenes to establish their charitable organisation ‘Pink Packets’. Their aim is to be able to provide pre-packed paper bags of sanitary products for those who need them, and to promote the use of eco-friendly menstrual cups. According to Zarna, a councillor working in Blenheim, period poverty can affect anyone. “You’d be surprised how many women have trouble affording these items… including working women. “Women who struggle to afford pads and tampons may take days off work and prefer to stay home,” she says. In her role as a councillor Zarna has worked with ‘a lot’ of youth and one pattern she noticed with those in trouble for shoplifting and truancy, was the lack of money to buy sanitary products. “I was hearing stories about these students not going to school, or caught shoplifting the items they needed. “I was shocked! So I talked to my friends and we decided we wanted to do something about it,” she says. Together with Minnie, Denise and Christal they have approached businesses and individuals for donations, to have collection jars and to have donation boxes. Pink Packets has received support from My Cups NZ who are also aiming to end period

poverty by selling menstrual cups which are reusable and have a 10 year lifespan. “These are fantastic products and the idea is that you buy one and that’s it. You won’t need to buy any pads or tampons, which also helps to save the environment… it’s a win win,” Minnie says. To purchase a My Cup menstrual cup, visit their website www.mycup.co.nz. There’s an option to donate a cup to Pink Packets which will go on to benefit Marlborough women. For anyone wanting to make donations of money or sanitary items, there are collection boxes and jars at the following: The Community Care Pharmacy;Boutique Beauty in Renwick; Pole Studio Marlborough; Vamp Hair Boutique; Cabello Hair and Beauty;Rapaura Hair Design. There is also a Givealittle Page set up. If you wish to contact the Pink Packets team to find out how you can help, or to make a donation, email marlbwomenscentre@gmail. com

Easter more than eggs Police officer, pilot, motorcyclist, minister – Derek Harding tells Bill McElhinney about his interesting life and journey to ministry in Blenheim Derek Harding loves to get out on his motorcycle as often as he can.

“I grew up in the South of England I did the usual things of Sunday school and church choir, so I have always considered myself to be a Christian,” Derek says. “These things also set me up for a lifelong love of music and singing. “Less usually, I became a bell-ringer, a hobby which I have maintained for over 50 years,” Derek says. “In my early teens I considered a vocation in the church but that was not to be. “On leaving school, after a false start in the printing industry, I joined the local constabulary and served as a police officer for over 30 years. “I rode motorcycles, patrolled the infamous M25 motorway, became a qualified accident investigation officer and spent my closing years as an instructor and trainer before

retiring in 1998,” Derek says. “I had been licenced as a Reader in our local church, and when I finished my police career I started training for local ordained ministry,

“I rode motorcycles, patrolled the infamous M25 motorway,”

a seven year programme of parttime study. “Having already gained a degree in science, maths and technology

with the Open University, part-time study and I weren’t strangers,” Derek says. “In the UK, local ordained ministry is unpaid so I worked in various IT environments and ended up running my own consultancy business, working mainly in France. “This kind of work changed and in 2007 I came to Blenheim with the opportunity to move into full-time ministry at the Anglican Nativity Church.” When Derek retired from working with the Spring Creek Anglican Church in 2015, he and his wife Denise bought a house in town. Derek is serving at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church until a new minister is appointed and has other roles, including working with the St John health shuttle and the Mission Aviation Fellowship. “We have a daughter and her fam-

ily in Nelson and another daughter and her family near Carlisle, in the North West of England,” Derek says. “Being away from their growing family is hard. “Living in a place like Marlborough, though, means that I can indulge my other passions of motorcycling (I’ve ridden motorcycles for over 50 years now and I have a vintage 1950 Vincent Comet and a Suzuki Burgman AN 650 and flying (particularly a Piper Warrior). “At this time of year with displays of Easter eggs, hot-cross buns and the buzz of Easter, I like to reflect that something happened which changed the world for ever. “A man, Jesus, was betrayed by a friend, tortured and executed by an authority which he dared to challenge and was placed in a rock tomb.

Two days later (the “third day”) his followers found his tomb empty. “Contemporary historian, Josephus, records that Jesus’ followers made this claim and that some of them had seen Jesus over the next few weeks. “It seems to me that this little piece of history, independently related elsewhere than in the Bible, triggered a worldwide explosion of religious faith that has changed the world permanently” Derek says. “Most people want to live ‘good’ lives and it is Jesus’ example which inspires so many to live less selfishly, with more care for the world and the people around them. “Being examples of the values Jesus taught and demonstrated is the point from which faith can grow and Easter can be celebrated with fairness and grace.”

Singing group needs new leader By Megan Connolly A social singing group is looking for a new leader to take over as their Song Leader-- lead by Pamela Nichols up until recently. The Zingers are a community singing group that has been developing over the last 10 years in Blenheim. Currently 12 members meet— including four men and eight women—to practice and perfect their harmonies together. “All comers are welcome whatever your knowledge or singing ability or background, just as long as you enjoy singing!” Sheenagh Barron, one of the members says. It’s perfect for people who “wouldn’t think to join” but want to have fun and learn new skills. The group still rehearse weekly but the absence of Pamela Nichols’ skilful leadership drives them to reach out in hopes of finding a new enthusiastic Song Leader.

An understanding and passion for music, a keyboard, and anyone “interested in leading a group” would be a valuable asset to their community. Recently, they headed over to sing at the Nelson Cathedral in the Top of the South A Capella Singing groups. Ten groups from the south sing 2 Songs each then 9 altogether. But more commonly, the group sings occasionally at the Sunday Market and various Homes around Blenheim. Sheenagh urges anyone to come along and just “see how you feel without the commitment” and those “people interested in joining should get in touch or come along and meet us at Riversdale”. The Zingers meet 7pm till 9pm every Thursday evening at the Riversdale Community House.

The Cancer Society Canterbury-West Coast division’s Daffodil Shuttle has been given a boost by Top of the South Lions Clubs.

Southland/Otago and the North Island. The Motueka Lions Club spotted a way of helping a local community member when away from home and in need of support. They called on neighbouring Lions Clubs to join them in a supporting the shuttle service financially, which would enable the Cancer Society to use their funds for other things, such as maintaining accommodation for patients. Local Lions Clubs Blenheim, Beavertown Blenheim Lions, Havelock, Renwick and Seddon were keen to contribute to the cause knowing that not only their members, but others in their community have and will continue to need the shuttle service at some of the hardest times of their lives. The project will continue annually with the Motueka Club inviting their fellow Lions Clubs to join them in ensuring the ongoing support for the shuttle.

By Bill McElhinney Lions Clubs from Marlborough, Nelson, Tasman, West Coast and Mid Canterbury have joined forces to raise more than $14,000 towards the annual cost of running the Cancer Society Canterbury-West Coast division’s Daffodil Shuttle. The shuttle takes patients from these regions to and from their treatment while they are staying at the Cancer Society’s Daffodil House and Daffodil Lodge in Christchurch. The shuttle provides an invaluable service for those from out of town who need to use the Christchurch oncology services. The shuttle makes 12 round trips every day, transporting approximately 18.000 patients annually of which 35 per cent come from Nelson/Marlborough area, 30 per cent from the West Coast region, 22 per cent from Mid Canterbury and 13 per cent from other regions such as Kaikoura, Cheviot, Hanmer,

Flaxbourne A&P Show Sunday March 25, 2018

There was much to smile about at the Flaxbourne A&P Show held in Ward on Sunday. After the rain on Saturday things were a little soft underfoot but the sun broke free for a fine day. Entries in the vegetables, flowers and junior handcraft were well up on the previous few years, and sewing, knitting, home produce and cooking also had good entries. School art and sculpture exhibits showed some amazing talent form Ward and Seddon schools. The new building used for the shearing, wool and the Speed Shear in the early evening proved to be a tremendous asset for the show and future events for the local community. Winners of the following events: Speights Spouse Carrying Competition, Nikita and Freddie Gane: McKendry Honda & Mazda Flaxbourne Flyer, Emma Pilcher (horse rider) Nicole Soper (driver) and Vinny Redwood (runner): Terrier Race winner: ‘Holly’, last year’s winner. Frankie Thompson making friends with Toffee the goat.

Millie Boyce with her pet sheep Alex which won second place in the Pet Sheep Category.

David McMurtry with sons Walter and Ted. Michael Keen with son Axl looking at the tractors.

Todd Neal doing the sprint as part of the McKendry Honda and Mazda Flaxbourne Flyer teams event.

Pam Neal and Beau, competing in the show jumping leg of the McKendry Honda and Mazda Flaxbourne Flyer teams event.

National keen to attract youngsters “We really want to attract more young people to politics,” newly elected Kaikoura electorate National Party chairman Joe Sims says. “We are focused on attracting new members, especially young people who have an interest in politics,” Joe says. The Kaikoura electorate of the National Party held their annual meeting last week and Joe says there was a good turnout. “The party is in good spirits after a strong result in last year’s election and the continued good work of MP Stuart Smith,” Joe says. “The party must continue to work hard to represent the ambitions of people in the Kaikoura electorate and is focused on increasing the party’s presence in Hurunui particularly”. Blenheim will host the Mainland National Party conference in May, which will see a number of senior members of the party visit the region, Joe says “It is an excellent opportunity for us to showcase our beautiful region and get important local issues in front of our elected representatives”. The following are the electorate office holders: Joe Sims, chairperson; Tim Leslie, John Leader, Dave Holland, Domenic Romano and James Ryan, vice chairs; Jenny Leader, secretary; Kelvin Deaker, treasurer; Jackie Smart, membership officer; Jim Mears, branch chair – Linkwater; Kevin Parkes, branch chair - Wairau Plains’ Chris Redwood, branch chair – Awatere; Dave Holland, branch chair – Cheviot; Simon Mackle, branch chair - Kaikoura) and Hamish Marfell, branch chair - Opawa.

Since Chris Steadman opened her Ntrance hypnotherapy clinic in the Redwood Pass Road, she has built up a successful business. She is often fully booked a couple of weeks ahead as her multiple satisfied customers pass on to their friends the good news of what hypnotherapy has been able to do for them. The deep relaxation that accompanies hypnotherapy is thoroughly enjoyable in its own right. More importantly, it is the essential precursor to the changes in negative habits that her clients are looking to change. What they say about her clinic on Facebook and in other testimonials speaks for itself. “Chris has saved my life.” Mike, (Virtual Gastric Banding – Weight Loss).

“I haven’t touched sugar in over ten months since I saw Chris.” Julie, (Sugar Addiction). “Neither of us has smoked another cigarette in over a year. Thank you Chris.” Barb and Robin, (Quit smoking). “I lost six kilos in four weeks and I’m still going strong since my virtual gastric banding with Chris. And I fee great! So happy!” Liz. “I am now in control. I feel so calm and relaxed.” Rob, (Anxiety). “And after seeing Chris, I won my next competition. I am a winner!” Sonia, (Sports Performance). For those who want to know more, the first port of call is at the Ntrance website www.ntrance.co.nz

Our customers value, trust and return to us,” Leandra says. “For us as agents its the knowledge, advice and little extras we know that makes our client’s travel more seamless,” Robyn adds. Between the two women there is over 25 years experience in the industry, stemming from their passion for travel. At the age of 14 Robyn was fortunate enough to travel with her parents on their OE, while Leandra lived overseas as an exchange student.

The meaning behind Easter Easter Sunday is celebrated all around the world with hot cross buns and chocolate easter eggs, with many going to look for eggs, left by an easter bunny. However, on Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of the lord, Jesus Christ. Christians believe, according to the Bible, that Jesus was raised from the

dead three days after his death on the cross. The death of Jesus Christ is remembered on Good Friday; the Friday just before Easter. Through his death, burial and resurrection, Jesus paid the price for our sin so that all who believe in him, may have a relationship with God, through Jesus, and eternal life with him.

GOLF ROUND UP

Vile act from Smith, Australia a new cricket low The Australian cricket team’s ball tampering sums up why they have such a poor reputation globally as players. Aussie captain Steve Smith has apologised for getting team mate Cameron Bancroft to tamper with the ball during the third test of a spiteful series against South Africa. What makes the situation worse is the plan was signed off by the Australian leadership group, meaning not only was it a premeditated shot at ‘The spirit of the game’ but it was signed off

by the very players in the team who should know better. But wait there’s more. That same leadership group used their youngest teammate in Bancroft to do the dirty work. The opener is fighting for his place in the team and he could very well be an easy scapegoat. Ultimately it is Smith who must resign as captain. He cannot lead a team in the international arena, he has lost all integrity. This will also continue Australia’s slide down moral high

ground that only they think they’re on. Sadly the Aussie’s have always had the reputation of cricketers who were happy to dish out the banter but could rarely take it on the chin when the tables were turned. David Warner is the perfect example of a player of this calibre. The boys, I say boys not men, in baggy green are being outplayed in South Africa and according to Smith the plan was hatched out of desperation. Why his team can’t take a loss

on the chin in 2018 is beyond me. Smith gets the tiniest bit of credit for coming clean but for many it will be too little too late for the cocky captain from ‘The Lucky Country’. This is a dark day for Australian Cricket that can only be rivalled by the underarm incident. This is deplorable, hurts not only Australia but the entire game. Steve Smith, arguably the best batsman playing today has tarnished his career irreversibly.

Boxing club growing By Celeste Alexander Local boxing trainer Mike Newton, known for coaching the winning red team at last year’s Fight for Life charity boxing match, is preparing to open his club in a larger building in Blenheim. Smack Fitness Boxing Club is set to open on Main Street in the coming weeks after being operated out of Mike’s home based gym for the past five months. The former New Zealand title holder says there’s been so much interest from people wanting to train under him that he’s had to seek out a larger premises. “The club has just grown and grown and I got to the point where I was receiving so many enquiries that I couldn’t keep up, but with more space I can run larger

classes,” he says. “I train all ages. I have a huge children’s class which is going well and one class I’m expecting will be popular is the fitness programme I’ll hold on Wednesday nights which will be a Crossfit/boxing style... a bit of everything,” he says. Some of the men Mike has been training have been stepping up to fight at corporate matches, including well known multisport athlete Jeremy McKenzie. Jeremy took part in Fight for Life last year and recently took on a corporate fight on the under cards with some of the largest pro fighters in NZ, Mike says. “I’ve also got Reon Materoa who was also on last year’s red team who will hopefully be having a fight

on May 4 at the Bowyn Morgan undercard match in Christchurch. Both guys are doing really well with their training!” Boxing has been in Mike’s family for several generations so it was no surprise that he began training at the age of eight. “I did it for a sport and began competing by 10,” he says. When he was 13 he won his first NZ title and by the age of 16 he had his first senior NZ title, making him the youngest ever senior NZ title holder. His main coach was Phil Shatford who has worked with some of the big names like Kiwi heavyweight Joseph Parker, Shane Cameron and now Bowyn Morgan and is set to take a team to the Commonwealth Games

Boxing trainer Mike Newton will soon be moving his Smack Fitness Boxing Club is expanding and moving into a larger premises on Main Street.

next month. Mike went on to hold seven consecutive NZ ti-

tles, was a Oceana Games bronze medalist and a NZ rep for four years.
