But the majority of cyclists are amateurs who just enjoy the challenge and the social side of the event, Duncan says. “We’re delighted that a good many of those who enter are women,” Duncan says, “and we would like to have even more take part,” For Sarah and her friends the 42km section it was a challenge they felt they could meet. Sarah, a mother of three, runs a free and informal support and health and wellness group in Blenheim called Warrior Women, which aims to encourage women to see the best in themselves and each other. “We meet every Wednesday and walk the Wither Hills,” Sarah says.

“Then some of us decided to give this event a go. “We’ve been out biking together on Monday evening for the past six weeks, riding up to 20km, some of it along the Spring Creek Bike trail. “We went out one night recently with Duncan and did a 32km ride, so we’re feeling confident about Saturday. “We’re not trying to go fast: we’ve just set a goal and we want to achieve it together.” Entries for this year’s GrapeRide are well ahead of last year, Duncan says. “It brings hundreds of people into Marlborough for the weekend. It’s great for the accommodation

providers, the retailers, restaurants and bars. “Conservative estimates are that it brings $2 million in to Marlborough over the weekend.” The event is also made possible by the support from volunteers and other groups, Duncan says. “We have about 100 to 130 volunteers involved, Lions, scouts, marshals, traffic management, St John Ambulance, Fulton Hogan – we get fantastic support.” The race was started in 2005 by Top of the South Events owner Peter Halligan. In 2016 it was sold to notfor-profit company Go Marlborough, and profits from GrapeRide go in to supporting new community events.

Ready to party - electric style By Celeste Alexander With just over two weeks to go until the Marlborough Earth Day Party which takes place in Blenheim, co-ordinator Peter Deacon has taken to the streets on his electric powered bicycle to spread the message. The event takes place on April 21 from 10am3pm at A&P Park and has some pretty exciting things organised, Peter says. “We will be attempting a world record E-bike record which is huge. The record is currently set at 303, so if we can get

304 or more then we can claim the world record. “If we don’t break the world record, we can at least set a New Zealand record as no-one has claimed it yet,” he says. In addition to the electric cars, E-bikes and motorcycle displays, Marlborough Earth Day Party has been organised to be a fun filled family day out with bouncy castles, pony rides, icecream, entertainment plus so much more. “The point is to bring together the great businesses, organisations and citizens who are already

End of a monarchy?

inbrief

By Celeste Alexander Is Marlborough about to see the end of a monarchy? Founder of the Monarch Butterfly New Zealand Trust, Jacqui Knight recently visited Marlborough and has expressed concern at how few monarch butterflies she saw. “I stopped off for a long walk in Blenheim in the Riverside Park, past the pony club where I saw plenty of wildflowers and cabbage white butterflies, but not one monarch in more than five kilometres. “I was really horrified,” she says. Jacqui says that when you are raising monarchs in your garden you see monarchs in your neighbourhood. “When I drive around our country I notice where I see them and where I don’t. Monarchs are big and bright, so it’s easy to spot one gliding across the road. The first I saw was in Ashburton, then there were several in Christchurch, but none since.” She says monarch butterflies are considered to be good indicator of the health of the environment. “They are much easier to see than other insects. We might be looking out at hundreds of bees and other insects but don’t see them unless they’re up close. Will we notice them if they disappear altogether?” Asked what she thought had contributed to the decline, Jacqui says the wasp population has a huge effect each year. “The trust used to have members in the Marlborough area who over the summer would take monarch eggs and caterpillars into ‘protective custody’ and then later release the butterflies. “This helped enormously with the population but we need to find a solution to the social wasp

population. Social wasps have also had a devastating effect on our beautiful native butterflies, some of which are endemic, such as the Red Admiral. “There are so few of them around parts of NZ, that people don’t even recognise them anymore,” she says. Curious to see if she can raise monarchs in her own garden, reporter Celeste Alexander planted

two swan plants two years ago. On March 10, she noticed a single monarch arrive to lay eggs over a two-day period - the first monarch she had seen in a number of years. Last week upon checking the plant there were six surviving caterpillars. “But will they survive, and how many monarchs will we see this year? “There are several theories

around the noticeable decline in around the noticable decline in monarchs in Marlborough. Wasps, sprays and climate change are among them.” What are your thoughts? Are you raising monarchs in your garden and have you noticed a decline in monarchs? Email celeste@blenheimsun. co.nz.

Ticket scammers still at work By Bill McElhinney ASB Theatre goers are still being ripped off by an overseas-based scam site charging exorbitant prices for tickets that may have been sold multiple times. Last November The Sun ran a story warning of the scam site, called Viagogo, which is believed to be based in Czechoslovakia. A Motueka woman is the latest Viagogo victim. She paid $300 for two tickets to the Foster and Allen show in the ASB Theatre this month only to find one of the tickets was fraudulent. She said she felt pressured to buy the tickets as the website said there were only five tickets left, and two people were looking at buying them.

The site has been expertly set up and includes all the details normally found on the legitimate site. “If people searching for tickets type in the name of the show, say Foster & Allen for example, they’ll get Viagogo at the top of their search,” ASB Theatre event manager Katharine Overend says. “The only way to avoid being ripped off is to go to the official ASB Theatre Marlborough site,” theatre manager Andrew Scott says. “We can’t stop these people as they’re not based here. Consumer Affairs and the Police have been informed, but there’s nothing they can do. “Educating the public is the only way we can stop this happening.”

Back in the saddle A Blenheim man who spent five weeks in hospital following a motorcycle crash couldn’t wait to get back on his bike. Tom Brown says the crash in February last year was his first, despite riding motorbikes since he was just 12 years old. The 75-year-old suffered a broken shoulder socket, three broken ribs, a broken wrist and a punctured lung after being thrown into a crash barrier on the Kaikoura coast. “It was at the first tunnel near Kaikoura and there was a couple of cars in front of me and the blue one in front just stopped dead, it’s a left and right swing into that tunnel. “I probably applied the brakes a bit too hard and the bike dumped me on the ground,” Brown says. Despite the crash, Brown insists motorcy-

cles are perfectly safe, so long as appropriate safety measures are taken, including being aware of other road users. “If someone pulls out in front of you there’s not a lot you can do … you have got to anchor right up and slow right down just in case one of those cars do come out,” he says. Appropriate riding gear help minimise injuries and is essential, for any rider, including full-length protective clothing, gloves, boots and a well-fitting helmet. The bike that riders choose to ride is also important, Brown says. “The first thing you have got to do is be able to push the motorcycle around. Push it around the yard before you buy it. If you can’t push it then don’t buy it, because if you can’t push it you can’t handle it,” he says.

Blenheim leading the Blenheim Toyota sunshine stakes again A selection of our huge

By Bill McElhinney Blenheim is once again leading the sunshine stakes. After a sunny March, Blenheim is leading arch-rival Richmond by a massive 0.1 hours (6 minutes) sunshine, Marlborough Research Centre scientists Rob Agnew says. The hottest day was March 3, with a maximum temperature of 28.0°C, compared to 29.3°C on March 1, 2017. Our March sunshine hours were above average, and Blenheim, with 708.4 hours, is leading Richmond, 708.3 hours, Napier, 696.5 hours, and Waipara, 680.6 hours. It could have been better for Blenheim if the rain hadn’t arrived. And there was lots of it. “We recorded the highest January to March rainfall total on record for Blenheim for the 89 years, from 1930 to 2018,” Rob says. The 53.6 mm rain that fell is above the long term average for March of 39.4 mm. The second highest January to March total of 303.7 mm was recorded in 1995,

Blenheim’s wettest calendar year on record. It was also warmer. The mean temperature of 17.1°C was 1.1°C above the long-term average temperature for March of 16.0°C. The average daily maximum in March was 22.3°C. The coldest minimum temperatures were recorded on the morning of March 11, with an air minimum of 6.4°C and a grass minimum of 2.4°C. Meanwhile, the forecast is looking good for Saturday as Blenheim hosts hundreds of visitors here for the Forrest GrapeRide. Saturday’s forecast is for ideal cycling conditions, a temperature of 21°C with light winds. And now that it’s autumn, the air is cooling down and it’s the perfect time to prepare the winter garden so you can enjoy a variety of fruit, vegetables and flowers well through the winter months. Gardeners are encouraged to start by replenishing the nutrients lost in soil over summer by digging in lots of compost.

Hearing loss can hurt relationships By Bill McElhinney Communication is vital for a healthy relationship, so how does a couple cope when one or both partners have hearing loss? “It’s not uncommon for hearing loss to cause conflict, frustration or feelings of resentment in relationships,” hearing therapist Tania Shearer, says. “If people are having trouble communicating, it can have a big impact on how they get along together” Tania says. “But the good news is that once hearing loss is recognised as contributing to the problem, we can quite easily set up some strategies to improve day-to-day life.” Tania is coming to Blenheim on Monday, April 9, to facilitate a free four-week communication course specially designed for adults

Hearing therapist Tania Shearer is coming to run free workshops in Blenheim.

who are affected by hearing loss. People are encouraged to bring a friend, family member or partner along so they can work together on improving communication. “The course is based on

people’s individual needs and what they want help with,” Tania says. “Then we find practical strategies that help them. T hese cou ld i nclude everything from getting a partner’s attention before speaking, through to identifying and reducing that distracting background noise.” The course runs over four weeks at the Marlborough Community Health Hub from Monday, April 9, from 1pm to 2.30pm. Places are limited so call Life Unlimited Hearing Therapy on 0800 008 011 to register. Tania works for Life Unlimited Hearing Therapy, a free service funded by the Ministry of Health for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents aged 16 years and over.

Dear Ed, The letters of L. Hore (March 21) and “Old Codger” (March 28) in support of Bruce McLachlan’s fine letter on the urgent need for a truck bypass to the east of Blenheim raises the question: Why are the correspondents complaining? I tell you one reason. Underneath is a Marlborough District Council which apparently lacks foresight and energy. Their weak excuse will be “It’s not our job, it is the Land Transport Agency.” Well the council can get off its hands and become a strong advocate in the public interest. The council can tell Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith to listen and do something. The council can go to Parliament and tell the Minister of Transport of the need. As to cost, when one looks at highway “improvements” like south of Seddon a $6$8 million deviation which saved 30 seconds for road users, or the ridiculous unnecessary Spring Creek roundabout costing $6 million, that would have been $12 million towards a bypass. Wild guesses that it would cost $100 million are attempts to stifle the need for a bypass. My careful guess-estimate is it would cost under half of that. Percy Parker Blenheim

Merino blankets for families By Megan Connolly

From the kitchens at the Omaka Marae, to blankets donated to the local community, the ladies behind the Manaaki product range couldn’t be happier to be passing on what they’ve raised. Ma naa k i isn’t just homemade condiments made from their Maara Kai (community garden), but so much more—Manaaki means hospitality, kindness, generosity, and support. And that’s exactly what they do. Using the funds from their Manaaki range, the

‘Aunties of the Omaka’ Marae Maori Women’s Welfare League support women, children, and whanau in need, by supplying them with warm woollen blankets for winter. Donna Nepia has been one of the lead organisers bringing it to life, among many. “ E s s e n t i a l l y, o n e working bee equals one blanket. “Te piki Oranga was the obvious choice for a partnership,” she continues. “It’s our second year with them. “This year and last year

we gave six blankets, but we’d really love to double it—triple it!” Ripeka Houkamau of Te Piki Oranga says, “It’s great for us to look after whanau struggling that wouldn’t have access to these things, instead of feeling over whelmed”. “It promotes whanau to come across to Te Piki and know that there are options out there for support; Maori support each other.” Rosie Mackie, who receives the blankets, says it’s really expensive to afford quality fabrics like wool, and with synthetic

fabrics, there’s a high risk of overheating babies. “ T h is way p e ople can pass on this kind of knowledge with the blankets.” But they need more donations and would like to extend their reach to other organisations. “We would really like a wool company to come on board,” Donna says. To donate to the cause visit their Give a Little page: givealittle.co.nz/ cause/mahana-merinoblankets-for-whanau-andtheir-pepi Aunties holding their merino blankets to give to Te Piki Oranga. Are you a good listener? By Celeste Alexander Sunbelt Speakers Toastmasters member Lisa Wheeler is preparing for the Division Speech contest on April 21, but before then she needs ‘every opportunity to practice’, so has organised an event for the public to go along to. “I need to get my nerves and delivery under control. Would you be willing to help me?” Lisa is competing against eight winners from the South Island so to prepare she invites the public to listen to her speech ‘Life in a Pinball

The speech addresses Lisa’s journey with multiple sclerosis and fits into the contest category of five-seven minute ‘Inspirational Speech’. “After the area contest in February I was surprised to find myself shivering before the speech and shaking for a half hour afterwards. I didn’t think I was nervous... more experience will help me develop my control,” she says. Entry is $5 and you will receive a free coffee.

Optimist regatta in Picton The 2018 Toyota Optimist Nationals kicked off on Thursday evening with a parade through Picton by the participating teams. The clubs came along in great force and marched with a lot of noise and gusto through the main street, encouraged by crowds along the route. The parade took the crowds through the town centre and finished with a

welcome from officials, the college kapa haka group and Joe Sullivan. Around 140 sailors divided over 24 teams hit the water over the weekend, with the finals sailed on Monday and yesterday. The inexperienced local Queen Charlotte team did really well in the early stages, winning three out of their four races.

South Island English Freemasons celebrated their organisation’s 300th anniversary recently by donating hundreds of teddy bears to emergency service groups working with children in traumatic situations. The Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade received some of the bears in February, and last week the Blenheim St John Ambulance team were also presented with care bears. The bears were presented by Dunedin Lodge 931 EC representatives Bruce Lawrenson and Azher Mir to ambulance officers Rebecca Lee, Leanne Hodgetts and Steve Campbell.

Chopper busy on Monday Two incidents at the same time in the hills of Picton and then one in the Abel Tasman National Parks kept the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter on Monday afternoon. In the first of the two Picton calls, a 19 year old woman suffered a medical event while walking the Tirohanga Track in the Picton hills. After initial treatment by St John road crews, she was then loaded on the Rescue Helicopter from a clearing and flown to Wairau Hospital for further treatment. The helicopter then immediately returned

to Picton, where a 62-year-old Auckland woman had suffered a leg injury in a fall while walking on the Snout Track above Waikawa Bay. The on-board paramedic was winched down to her location and after assessment and initial treatment the woman was then taken to Wairau Hospital for care. As the rescue crew were about to return to Nelson they were redirected to a third call, this time in Anchorage in the Abel Tasman National Park where a 25 year old Austrian woman had suffered a medical event. She was flown to Nelson Hospital for further care.

Autumn CLEANING The new ‘spring-clean’ Autumn is regarded by the cleaning industry as being the new spring clean. Why? It’s because families and workplaces are back from the summer holidays and into school and work. It’s also the time families prepare for winter by cleaning out woodburners, chimneys and the outside areas. But this does mean a number of inside tasks need attention. These include cobwebs, leaves in the guttering or blowing in through open

windows and doors, dirty footwear and pets leaving marks on the carpets and flooring. Condensation is another big problem, particularly on window frames this time of year. Talk to your local window cleaning or glass specialists for the best solution. Upholstery and bedding are other areas that need attention after much traffic coming in and out from the outdoors. Air your mattress regularly and turn your mattress

after the warmer months. Finally, de-clutter the inside and outside of your home. It doesn’t take much for your home to be overrun with summer sport equipment, games, balls and other summer garden items which have kept the family entertained. Take the chance to sort through the various toys, equipment and banish sports shoes to the cupboard for safekeeping and you will be amazed how much more space you feel you have.

Now is the ideal time to give your home a clean from ceiling to floor.

As the temperatures cool and the flip flops are put away, autumn arrives with a timely reminder that your home may be in need of a clean. As you swap your summer sheets for winter blankets and move furniture around to accommodate heating, it’s the perfect time to clean the house from top to bottom. Here are some things to think about when writing out your jobs list. • Turning over your mattress and washing all of your bedding, including comforters and blankets. • Get your carpets professionally cleaned. Think of all the dust, dirt and grass clippings that have been walked in this summer. • Cleaning your windows, inside and out, including in between the sills. • Vacuum the drapes, window treatments, baseboards and in the corners. Move furniture and vacuum beneath and behind it. Vacuum upholstered furniture, or have professionally cleaned if needed. • Pull the refrigerator away from the wall,

and vacuum the condenser coils. For bottom-mounted coils, use a long, narrow brush to clean coils of dust and debris. • Clean your home’s gutters. If you don’t clean out your gutters, you run the risk of water building up in them during cold weather. • It’s also a great time to install gutter protectors that keep debris, like falling leaves, out of the gutters. • Have a professional examine your chimney/flu for any damage. • Put away summer equipment, such as outdoor tables and chairs, umbrellas, grills and children’s toys. • Touch up paint on and decks, trim and railings. Use a wire brush to remove flaking paint and prime bare wood first. • Clean away cobwebs. Spiders may be coming in to get out of the cold, so having a pest controller come in to spray for insects is a good idea too. • Put away your water timers and hoses when not in use.

Autumn CLEANING Quick tip for mould

When cleaning away cobwebs, try placing a sock over the broom handle for better effect.

Tips you might not have heard of Do you have tough-to-clean surfaces in your home? Here are some home remedies that you may not have heard of that are quick and easy, and can be done with items already in your home. • Coffee filters are great for cleaning glass and mirrors. Use them instead of paper towels as they leave no streaks or lint. • Vinegar and water is a great deodoriser for a

musty bathroom. Spray your shower down as you’re getting out as it absorbs the odours and the smell of vinegar goes away in a short time. • A wet pumice stone can actually be used to clean a dirty oven faster than some products, and for those who are irritated by cleaning products, this could be a good option. • When cleaning your mi-

crowave, first add baking soda to a cup of water and microwave it until it’s boiling. Odours are eliminated and the inside surface is easy to clean. • When cleaning cobwebs in and around your home, place a sock over the handle end of a broomstick. It’s also a good tool for cleaning under stoves and refrigerators.

During winter it’s common to find mould growing in areas around the home most affected by condensation. Reducing condensation, wiping the windows and opening windows to air rooms are some of the ways to help, but for those with mould already established here’s a quick and easy tip. White vinegar is one of the best ways to kill or clean mould, according to an information leaflet producted by Housing New Zealand. Vinegar can have a bleaching effect so it’s advised not to use it on surfaces that might discolour. Spray directly onto the mould using a spray bottle or wipe it on using a clean cloth. If necessary, use an old toothbrush to get into corners. On painted surfaces, thin down the vinegar half and half with water to avoid damaging the paint. Leave it for a few days to take affect and then wipe off the dead mould with soap and water using a clean cloth. Throw away the cloth or thoroughly clean it so that the spores don’t spread.

White vinegar is a great home tool to use when cleaning mould off surfaces.

Any time, anywhere By community constable Russ Smith Marlborough Police are keen to support our rural community. A recent example of this was a Police search initiated on a property in a remote area of the Pelorus Sounds via Havelock just prior to the Easter weekend. On that property Police located a large quantity of cannabis being cultivated, methamphetamine, large and small stolen items including an industrial generator valued at $40,000, a runabout boat, three trailers and a water-blaster. Police also located firearms unlawfully in the possession of the landowner. Police believe this individual and his associates were actively stealing from locals to support their own criminal activities. Some criminals think that they can operate anonymously in our rural areas. Police will seek them out and hold them to account for the crimes they commit against the good people in our community. You can help by passing information to the Police when you think things are not right about a situation. If you have information that could help the Police, you can ring your local station or phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Young players learn a lot from trip to nationals T he Ma rlborough Boys’ College softball team finished fifth in the secondary schools softball national tournament played in Hutt Valley. The college has been able to take strong teams to this tournament since early in 2006, and in 2012 the Boys’ College team won the the tournament. Last year Boys’ College came third out of 12 teams. This year the young players learned a lot from their first ever trip to the college nationals, team manager Helen Joseph says. “We would also like to thank our sponsors who made our trip possible: Mayfield Motor World,

Nathan Gill Contracting Ltd, K & J Consultants, Eckford Engineering 2002, and Hair by Kardos,” Helen says. “My thanks also to Nathan Gill and Nathan Peipi for the time they put into coaching the team.” The college team is: William Macdonald, pitcher; Christian Marshall–Farrow, catcher; Campbell Gill, 1st base; Te Ariki Peipi, 2nd base; Callum Hayton, 3rd base; Ethan Jones, short stop; Dane Gill, outfielder; Charles Tupoua’o, outfielder; Blake Love, outfielder; Maxwell Macdonald, outfielder; Viliami Uasi, utility; John Vakaloa; Christian Kaloni.

Busy time ahead for piper Brett By Bill McElhinney Hard work and dedication have payed off for young Blenheim piper Brett McKeown. He’s off to Australia this week with the Foundation Youth Pipe Band of New Zealand to compete in the Australian Pipe Band championships in Brisbane. Brett began blowing the bagpipes at the tender age of 10. “I just wanted to play the pipes after I heard them for the first time,” Brett says. “I feel sorry for my family and the neighbours – it must have been tough for them at times when I first started!” Brett initially hired a set of bagpipes from the Blenheim Pipe Band before eventually buying his own. They’re not cheap – an average set of pipes can cost around $1400, and a top set as much as $15,000. “And the bags on the best sets are made from sheepskin,” Brett says. Brett, who is studying commerce at Victoria University, plays in three pipe bands: the

Celtic Pipe band in Nelson, the Foundation Youth Band and the top grade Manawatu Scottish Society band. The Manawatu band is among the top 10 pipe bands in the world, and since joining Brett has been practising hard. “I practise at the top of a hill near the Botanic Gardens in Wellington,” Brett says. “I’m putting in about 20 hours a week at the moment and that will increase as the band prepares to compete in the world championships in Glasgow in August.” He has nine tunes to learn off by heart before the championships. Brett, the only piper from Marlborough to play in a grade one band will also be going to China with the Celtic Pipe Band to take part in the Shanghai Music Festival. “It’s great to have the opportunity to travel with the bands as well as compete,” Brett says. “I’ll see some of the world I probably would never have got to see otherwise.”

To help fund his travels, as well as his studies, Brett worked hard over the summer break. “I had two jobs,” he says. “I worked at Think Water Marlborough during the day, and then delivered pizzas for Dominos at night.” However, he would be grateful for any financial support for his competition trips, and if you would like to help, phone Brett’s folks on 577 8411. Cricket and rugby, Brett’s sporting interests, have had to go to make way for his piping ambitions. “You have to put the work in,” he says. One of the skills a piper must learn is one that few people would be aware of. “You have to be able to maintain a constant pressure on the bag,” Brett says. “As you blow air in, you also gently squeeze the air out, and the pressure must stay the same. If you alter the pressure on the pipes, the sound changes, and you can’t do that, especially in the top competition.”

Young piper Brett McKeown has been putting in plenty of practice as he prepares for a competition in Brisbane at the weekend.

Volleyball star Anna Gardiner is a taking a break from volleyball – and she’s certainly earned it. Last year the Marlborough Girls’ College year 11 student had a season to remember. Usually an outside hitter, Gardiner was selected as libero for the MGC senior side which won the division two title at the nationals volleyball champs. Her efforts earned her selection in the Tasman-based Te Totara team which toured the Gold Coast of Australia in August, playing Queensland regional teams. Then came the season highlight, Gardiner captaining the MGC junior team to victory at the South Island junior tournament in Christchurch during November. Playing in her regular position, she led from the front, being named tournament MVP. After the indoor event concluded, Gardiner teamed with

fellow MGC player Isabella Rohloff in the beach volleyball champs, finishing second, then the pair backed up with a fourth placing at the beach volleyball nationals. The 15-year-old relished representing her school at both senior and junior level in the same year, a rare feat, noting that there were different dynamics to deal with. “It was different in the seniors, as I had to work on my ability more … and playing in a new position. Libero is different, but I really enjoyed the experience. Playing with the older girls I got to learn heaps off them as well. Then in the juniors I had to lead the team.” She opted not to try out for the 2018 senior team which went to the national champs in early March, saying she just wanted to have a small break. “I’m keen to get back into it

soon though, the Tasman trials are in April.” After starting volleyball as a year five student at Springlands Primary School, she has continued on a steep learning curve. Her Bohally year eight side won the local competition then, as a year nine student at MGC, her side came fifth at the South Islands. There are large family footsteps to follow too. Her older sister Emma was a former MGC standout, captained MGC juniors to the SI title in 2014, making the senior team as a year 10 player and going on to play for the NZ juniors. Anna has high hopes for the title-winning junior side as they all step up to senior level. “Hopefully we can all get back together in 2019, have a good season, then in 2020, when we are all year 13, do really well. “We have always been good at working as a team.”

Netballers receive national award By Megan Connolly Bridget Gane and Shirley Hocquard were awarded Netball New Zealand’s Service Award for their outstanding contributions to the sport. The pair joined 23 other recipients from all over the country in Wellington recently to celebrate their achievements. To be considered for this award, all nominees must have served 15 years or more at their local club or centre or granted life memberships. Bridget and Shirley have spent much of their time on and around the Marlborough courts. Shirley basically grew up there. “I remember being dressed in a lil gym frock. My Mum (Betty Woodham) made one for me and a matching one for the Marlborough Team

mascot doll to wear on tournament days as she was coaching the team. “Most of my Saturdays were spent at the new Horton Park netball courts where Mum and Dad were part of the crew building the original netball pavilion,” she says. Bridget, however, recently played her 550th Premier game last year, with 34 consecutive years of games for the Harlequins Netball Club and Marlborough Netball Club. “That’s a lot of games!” Bridget laughs, “I love my Netball and will probably always continue to play it.” Bridget is still closely working with the sport, being a netball development officer for a time, and now sports coordinator for Marlborough Boys’ College.

The Red Cross will be running a sideline first aid course in Blenheim on April 11 from 5:30pm-8:45pm at the Red Cross rooms at Redwood Street. “This workshop would be useful for sports coaches, team managers, sports club administrators and match officials,” Rory Crawford from Sport Tasman says. “Due to the tight time constraints this will be a basic first aid workshop which will cover the following areas: Scene assessment and management, CPR, fractures and dislocations, soft tissue injury, bleeding and head and spinal injury,” Rory says. Each attendee will receive a Red Cross New Zealand basic first aid certificate which is valid for two years on the night. Spaces are extremely limited. To register, please contact Sport Tasman. The cost to attend will be $30, Rory says.
