Helmets a must Young cyclist survives road crash

By Bill McElhinney “Bike helmets save lives!” That’s the message from 15-year-old Reuben Garrett, who was knocked off his bike and hit the road head first last Thursday afternoon. Continued on page 2 Reuben Garrett is on crutches after being knocked off his bike, but he’s glad he was wearing his bike helmet. Dad Mike holds the bike, which was run over with Reuben’s leg beneath it.

If you ride a bike, wear your helmet! Continued from page 1 Reuben was on his bike, coming down Howick Road and intending to turn right into Maxwell Road. “I was heading in to town to see my friend,” he says. “There was a car behind me, and as I turned the car turned as well. The driver misjudged how close I was. “I was knocked off and hit the road head first. The car then ran over my leg and the rear wheel of my bike.” The driver was really distressed about hitting Reuben, and phoned an ambulance and the police. Reuben was taken to Wairau Hospital where x-rays showed his leg

was not broken, much to his relief. However, he has suffered tissue damage and has bad bruising, and will be hobbling around on crutches for the first week of the school holidays. “It was purely an accident, and we have asked the police not to press charges,” Reuben’s Dad, Mike says. The driver visited the family on Thursday evening, bringing chocolates and a $50 iTunes voucher for Reuben, and promising to replace his broken bike. The Garrets are a cycling family. Mum Cheryl cycles nearly every day, and Mike spent 30 years com-

peting in road and track cycling. So what do they think about a move to make cycle helmets voluntary? A group called Choice Biking is pushing for adults to be allowed to choose whether to wear a helmet or not. And despite having been the law for almost a quarter of a century, thousands of cyclists are thumbing their nose at wearing a helmet. Over the last four years, nearly 30,000 fines have been issued to cyclists for failing to wear a helmet. “Its madness,” Mike says. “No one should be on a bike without a helmet, and they should have it properly

done up as well.” Mike should know. When he was a competitive road cyclist he was knocked off his bike during a race. “I suffered a lot of grazing and bruising, but the helmet saved my life,” Mike says. “The helmet was cracked in half, but my head wasn’t!” Reuben’s helmet has a crack on the inside as a result of his fall and will have to be replaced. But the crash won’t put him off riding his bike. Once he heals up he’ll be cycling again, and always with his helmet on and secured!

Marion’s purple poppy project helps others By Bill McElhinney Marion Nelson’s purple poppy passion has paid off handsomely. The Blenheim woman and several of her friends knitted hundreds of the purple poppies, which are worn to remember the millions of animals killed in human wars. An estimated eight million horses and donkeys were killed in World War I alone. Marion has spent the last few weeks selling her poppies for 50c each, or a donation, with the funds going to her choice of three causes associated with animals: Walnut Ranch, the Falcon Trust and Riding for the Disabled She was also thrilled to get an order for 400 purple poppies for a special memorial which has been established at the New

Zealand Army Museum at Waiouru. On Friday Marion donated the proceeds from the poppies to three delighted recipients: Diana Dobson, from the Marlborough Falcon Trust; Sophie Bashford from Riding for the Disabled; and Katie Stadler from Walnut Ranch. Each organisation received $400, for which they were really grateful. “This is so wonderful,” Diana says. “The Falcon Trust really relies on donations to keep going!” Although Marion has really enjoyed her poppy project this year, she is not sure if she will do it again. “I’ll wait and see,” she says. “It’s a lot of work – even putting the little safety pins on hundreds of poppies. I’ll see how I feel next year.”

Cat returns after four-year walkabout By Celeste Alexander Four years ago a grey coloured cat called Lenny disappeared and despite his owners’ efforts, they could not find any sign of him. Four years later he’s been found and is now back with his owners, Kathy and Warren Johnston. But where did Lenny’s travels take him and what adventures has he been on? “What tales could he tell if only we could speak cat...?” Kathy laughs. No one knows, but for now Lenny is back sleeping on his favourite sheepskin rug, a little older and wiser perhaps. “Fingers crossed that he is done with all this travelling lark and is happy to stay put,” Kathy says. Lenny’s mysterious disappearance began four years ago when Kathy and Warren moved to Blenheim. They had lived on a lifestyle block southwest of Christchurch but decided to downsize and thought Blenheim was a “really good spot for a couple of old retirees”. They brought Lenny with them who happily settled into life in Marlborough but sadly one month after arriving, Lenny disappeared. “We hunted high and low, but no sight of him was to be found!” Kathy says. As four years passed by, Warren had never given up hope that Lenny was still alive and would one day return home. Then there was a phone call that changed everything. Kathy, who was in Tauranga visiting relatives two weeks ago, received a phone call from her sister-in-law to say they had been contacted by a local vet to ask if they owned a cat called Lenny.

“Bruce looked around at his cats and thought, none of these cats are called Lenny, so he said no, but thanks for the call, and hung up,” Kathy explains. “Fortunately my sister-in-law had walked in and asked about the call, and remembered we had a cat called Lenny. She contacted the vet and confirmed we had owned a grey cat called Lenny. “The vet had scanned the microchip which had given their phone number as the second contact

person for Lenny, so fortunately for us he had been found,” Kathy says. Warren collected Lenny from the vet and took him home to await Kathy’s return. “He kept Lenny locked in the next day but he got a bit frustrated so Warren opened the door and whoosh, the cat leapt out and straight over the fence. “Warren thought he had lost the darn cat before I got back from Tauranga to see him, but he

came home that evening with lots of cuddles and smooches and is now happily settled back in with his family,” Kathy says. “The big question is though, where has been been, what adventures has he been on and what tales could he tell? “If a kind person took him in then we say thank you for looking after our lad. “Or did he just wander around for four years picking up a meal here and there...?”

The Ministry of Health says this year’s funded flu vaccine will protect against four strains of influenza for the first time, including the A(H3N2) strain that badly affected people in the Northern Hemisphere during their winter. “Our influenza season normally begins from June, so getting vaccinated by mid-May is the best way to be protected for winter,” Health Minister Dr David Clark says.

Mayor John Leggett is disappointed the co-location of Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ colleges has been put on hold by the Ministry of Education. The $63 million plant to rebuild the colleges has been put under review with all options back on the table, including refurbishing the existing colleges and building a co-educational college. “We have lost three years while this has not progressed, which is a real shame,” John says. “I will be raising this matter with Education Minister Chris Hipkins in the near future. My hope is we can move this forward again – after all we are talking about our children, the future of Marlborough.”

By Bill McElhinney Would you take the bus if there was a commuter service? Would you use the bus instead of driving or taxiing to the airport? Or would you use a different bus route from what’s currently available? These are some of the questions the Marlborough District Council wants your feedback on as part of its bus survey. The survey, which runs until Friday May 4, aims to gauge community interest in expanding the bus service to Renwick and from Burleigh/Boulevard Park on Taylor to Blenheim town centre. Councillor Jenny Andrews says this is a great opportunity for people to let the council know what they want from their local bus services. “Marlborough is changing – we need to ensure our bus service meets the needs of local residents and also visitors to the region,” Jenny says. “For some of our older residents, the bus service is a lifeline that allows them to get out and do the simple things – like shopping or going to the doctor – things that others might take for granted. “We want to ensure we can provide the right service for the majority of people in Marlborough which is why it’s so

important for the community to provide us with their views,” Jenny says. The survey will also try to establish whether other bus services in the region are likely to be viable. “Council wants to get a better understanding of how residents use the current service, and how they think it could be improved. We also want to know whether additional routes are required or whether an extension of service hours would result in locals catching the bus to and from work,” councillor Cynthia Brooks says. “Every home in Renwick will receive a survey form in their letterbox to ensure that those who are not online have an opportunity to give their views,” Cynthia says. People can complete the survey online and a paper copy is also available from either the council office or the Blenheim or Picton Library, or from the driver on the Blenheim bus. Once completed the survey can be mailed to Marlborough District Council, PO Box 443, Blenheim, 7240, or dropped in one of the collection boxes at the council office, the Blenheim or Picton Library, or the Renwick Super Value store.

Young learn about Anzac spirit By Megan Connolly The kids at Little Footsteps Scott Street met with Chris Bamber from the RSA on Monday morning at Seymour Square to learn about Anzac Day and what the white crosses mean to Blenheim. Karen Gourley, the centre manager at Little Footsteps, says that in the past the kids have been learning about Anzac Day through story books and speakers from the Airforce but doing it this way they can actually see it. “Hopefully the experience will inspire families of the children to come to the services and participate in this part of history,” Karen says. The pre-schoolers will be making an Anzac wreath in preparation for the day for them to place at one of the many ceremonies. Milla Boardman, one of the children, says “Anzac Day

Reminds people that wars don’t do any good for anyone.

It’s remembering those in service who gave up their lives.

Because it commemorates the soldiers that fought from Australia and New Zealand.

Because of my relatives that fought—it’s about remembrance and respect.

Reminds us of the thousands that died in war. Especially the younger generations.

It’s important because I believe in supporting our cultural heritage and the things that let us live the lives we do.

Dear Ed, There’s not as many as there used to be. There will be some from modern years, but the returned servicemen and servicewomen of the previous century will be fewer, as they are each year. But those who can will come and those who can march will step off and try to keep pace with the drum. The Anzac Day parade organisers are to be congratulated for a new parade formation, which gives those who are qualified to wear the Operational Service medal a separate place of honour and also recognition as the first unit of the parade. They did earn it. Terry Ford Blenheim NZ 15096

Salmon farms Dear Ed, I see on the internet Washington State in USA has placed a ban on salmon farming as escaping salmon are mixing up the gene pool. Google Norway salmon farms and you see fish farming is not productive or a healthy product. The heavy losses and dumping of dead salmon at rubbish dumps from Marlborough Sounds salmon farms shows

fish farming is not good. Frankly I would like that salmon farming not done in the Marlborough Sounds and mussel farms relocated in open waters, as is easily done in the Coromandel. Wither Hills reservoir gets revamp By Bill McElhinney The 50-year-old Wither Hills reservoir is getting a makeover over in the next six months to seismically strengthen and upgrade the 1970s structure. Work on the reservoir, located south of Weld Street, began last month and includes remediation of external walls, internal concrete surfaces, and the floor slab and reservoir roof. Pipe work is also being replaced as part of the project. “We’re installing new interior beams to strengthen the structure and we’ll need to fix the concrete roof, which is leaking,” Marlborough District Council projects engineer Mark Power says.

Brides, be in our show! By Celeste Alexander Brides… would you like to show off your beautiful gowns and relive the magic of your wedding day? The Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show is just over two months away and applications are now being accepted for bride entries. Brides residing or married in Marlborough between September 29, 2017 and June 18, 2018 are invited to enter. This year’s show, set for June 29, will be quite different to previous ones with a new venue and format. It’s being held at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim and will feature theatre-style seating with a cocktail hour including drinks and nibbles prior to the show starting. The lineup of bride categories will remain the same, with first, second, and third placings along with Lucky Bride winner, Mrs

Photogenic, Mrs Personality and a prize for best bridal shoes. There has also been a new addition to the show to honour the wedding gowns that were lost in the Blenheim Drycleaning fire in February. Show convenor Noeline Stewart says the organising committee wanted to provide an opportunity for the brides who lost their gowns in the fire, to still be part of the show. “It’s sad that they cannot take part wearing their beautiful gowns but we will have a section of the show where there will be photographs playing on a large screen. If this applies to you we welcome you to contact us for more information,” she says. For all other brides wanting to collect an application form, these are available at the Sun office, or by emailing bblbrideoftheyear@ gmail.com The cost per bride entry is only $25.

it filled and keep the pressure up.” Council assets and services manager Richard Coningham says the area directly around the reservoir is being fenced off from Wither Hills Farm Park users while work on the upgrade is carried out. “While this won’t affect people using the park, we do ask that people be mindful of the work site and be aware of trucks using the Weld Street entrance,” Richard says. “The upgrade of the 36m diameter reservoir, that can store up to 5600 cubic metres of water, will mean it is fit for purpose for another 40-50 years,” Richard says. The project is planned to be completed by mid-October.

These are being filled with epoxy resin.” The reservoir services most of the properties south of Hospital Road, Mark says. The $1.8 million project, part of the council’s ongoing upgrade of essential local infrastructure, has been scheduled for this time of the year because there is less demand than in the summer. New valves and control units will ensure the reservoir is kept topped up, which is important, Mark says. “If there was a major fire in town there would be a big draw on the reservoir, so it’s important to keep

Poppy Day is an important day not only on the Marlborough RSA’s calendar but as part of our national calendar since 1922, making it one of the country’s oldest nationwide appeals. This Friday, April 20 will be the day we sell our ‘Red Poppy’ reminding our community of its significance and why we wear it proudly. Around 100 collection boxes have gone out into the community where red poppies can be purchased for a donation. Marlborough RSA president Chris Bamber says there will also be 38 collection stands on the streets and at supermarkets on the day. “What is collected in Marlborough stays in Marlborough... it’s our major fundraiser for the year,” she says. This year the theme for Poppy Day is ‘Not all Wounds Bleed’ bringing awareness to our servicemen and woman who suffer service related mental and psychological injuries which is on the increase due to operational deployments today. Marlborough Community Potters with their handmade ceramic poppies for Anzac Day. Sue Bulfield-Johnston, Jane Orphan (CEO of Omaka Heritage Centre), Susan Hocquard-Lindstom, Glen Waters, Sara Scott, little Mila O’Sullivan and Kate O’Sullivan.

Pick a poppy By Megan Connolly Marlborough Community Potters have handmade around 420 porcelain poppies which are to be displayed from April 20 to 26 at Omaka Heritage Centre for Anzac day. Kate O’ Sullivan, a member of Marlborough Community Potters, says it is a great way to commemorate Anzac Day while teaching people pottery skills. The poppies will be placed by the walkway between the Omaka Classic Cars

Museum and Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre so that people can walk through a field of poppies and pick one out that they like. Each poppy is individually made and has its own unique style. The 420 poppies took around four weeks to make, including four working bees at six hours a time, with around 10-15 people and about six days in a kiln to set. “They’re great for gifts and grave stones, and a nice thing to take to Anzac services.

“They brighten up your indoor and outdoor spaces too,” Kate says. The poppies cost $25 each, or three for $70. “Everything raised is going to the RSA, Omaka Heritage Centre, and into Marlborough Community Potters to fund their first purpose built building, ”Kate says. Online there’s an opportunity to go in the draw to win two entries into the Omaka Heritage museum.

All ages march together Anzac Day, a day our nations of both New Zealand and Australia come together to remember our fallen not only of April 25, 1915 but all conflicts from 1899 to present day. Anzac Day is a special day in our calendar as it is a day that all New Zealanders come together to commemorate and remember how we came to enjoy the privileges and freedoms we have today. Marlborough Returned and Services’ Association president Chris Bamber says it’s ‘a day our veterans, ex and current servicemen and women march with pride with our younger generation proudly walking along side’. “Anzac Day in Marlborough grows in significance with the general public every year, and the services are attracting larger attendances each year and long may it continue to do so.

Striving for perfection

Operating since 2008, Hortus combines passion and experience to deliver the best service for it’s clients. Hortus also strives to provide the best working environment for it’s employees, encouraging progression through training to ensure they perform to their potential and as a team to offer the greatest service. Managers of the Hortus vineyard management team, Troy McElhinney and Craig Vanstone offer over 35 years viticultural experience. Hortus provide a full support team of field managers, supervised labour and expert machinery operators. Added together, this makes for seamless management and a team you can trust with your investment. “At Hortus we strive for perfection,” says Craig.

“O u r mach i ner y a nd management division offers everything from development, machinery operations, harvesting, and management through to viticulture consultation. “Being a vineyard owner is extremely satisfying and it can be stressful particularly during seasons like this but we are the only management company that has our own labour division. “This means we guarantee that vineyard labour tasks can be completed throughout the season, which is very important considering the current labour shortage,” says Craig. “The rain before Easter really put pressure on the timing of harvest for this year’s vintage, but overall it looks like it will be a decent vintage.”

Hortus provides competitive rates for the market based on the specific task at hand. “We can work at contract rates that motivate staff, returning the best for all involved; Hortus, our clients, and our employees,” says Craig. “We currently have a mix of corporate and private clients both small and large-scale, and we’re always looking to help new clients where possible. “We welcome customer feedback and are always looking for continuous improvement,” says Craig. If you are looking to lease your vineyard or take a step back and relieve some stress, get in touch with Troy or Craig. Contact the team at Hortus and talk to the experts today.

Harriers pack run The Marlborough Harrier Club is holding a a pack/ training run or walk leaving from the clubrooms at 6pm on Thursday. Reflector gear is compulsory. Joggers and walkers regardless of ability are welcome. On Saturday there is a pack run/walk from Linda’s house on Taylor Pass Road at 2pm, a

good cross country excursion. Linda’s house is located on the left hand side just before the first bridge after the Taylor Dam, approximately 7km from Wither Road. Look for the ‘Harriers’ sign. Everyone is welcome to participate and there is a children’s run organised. Don’t forget to bring a plate to share for afternoon tea.

competition between Nelson and Blenheim. Scott Alexander took pole position in the first race and held the lead to win. In the second race Nelson pushed back with Josh Nell (87N) taking the second win. In the final race 11 stockcars took to the field, minus the damaged Taylor Forbes who was taken into the wall by a Nelson rival. However Scott Alexander pushed through and again took the win for the final race. The award for best stirrers would have to go to the streetstocks for their crushing display on the track. Noth-

ing was held back as they smashed and crashed their way through the afternoon, delighting the crowd with their efforts. The saloons also put on a good field with Rob Flood taking a chequered flag. Their races were finished with a run off between the two Robs, Rob Flood and Robert Lee. And finally, just to top off an afternoon of hard hits, the stockcar soccer proved to be the highlight of the meeting, a fun race which was won by local Dallas Reeve.

Success for ocean swimmers By Bill McElhinney Blenheim ocean swimmers did well when the Interislander Big Tahuna Ocean Swim made its debut at Tahunanui Beach recently. Replacing the Christchurch Crown event as the South Island stop in the seven-leg national Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series, this year’s inaugural event attracted more than 540 competitors from the Nelson Tasman region and around the country. “Entries were down a bit,” Blenheim swimmer Pete Colbert says. “These events usually attract between 600-700 swimmers.” Four scheduled races were held in calm conditions in Tasman Bay - the 3km ‘I’m Going Long’

swim, a 500m or 1000m option and a 200m kids swim. In the 3km swim Blenheim swimmers Jodie Lovell sand Phil Jeffs finished first and second respectively, with Peter Colbert taking third place and other Blenheim swimmers John Scobie, Koos Van Spaden, Jude Bishell and Almuth Waechter finishing well. In the 1km race Blenheim father and son Martyn and Jacob Crossley competed, with Jacob beating his dad and winning gold in his age group. Jessica and Nicola Lovell competed in the 200m Ocean Kids event, with Jessica’s effort winning her a place in the New Zealand junior swim squad.

By Celeste Alexander There were plenty of hits, crashes and triumphs at Eastern States Speedway’s final race meeting held on Saturday. The club held it’s Harvest Nationals which drew a good number of cars in each of the classes and it was evident that the drivers were not holding back as they finished the season with a bang - literally! Christchurch, Nelson and Greymouth drivers turned out for the meeting, keen to jostle with the local drivers and making it great entertainment for the crowd. All of the classes hit the track hungry for some action. The ministocks were chomping at the bit to out run one another, bumper to bumper. They must have been keen to finish on a high or the adrenaline had taken over because there was certainly some minor contact between the eager drivers. ESS also put on a field of five modifieds, with four out of town drivers challenging local Scott Valk. Scott led much of the second race and took the flag, but by the final race the field had reduced to three where Scott quickly set out to move from third to second, which he comfortably held. In the stock cars there was a clear
