Mary Poppins magic!

By Bill McElhinney There’s more than a little magic flying around the ASB Theatre in Blenheim over the next couple of weeks. The Blenheim Musical Theatre production of the much-loved Mary Poppins opens tonight, and as a few of us saw at a special dress rehearsal on Wednesday night, it’s “practically perfect.” Continued on page 2

Mary Poppins (Jess Sawers) with her two charges, Michael and Jane Banks (Elliot Ham and Grace Straker.).

quote of the week

Mary Poppins is a musical delight Continued from page 1 It would be hard to describe Blenheim Musical Theatre as an amateur society after seeing this show. The singing, acting, beautiful costuming and great choreography, all enhanced by outstanding sound and lighting, make for a spectacular show. It’s a story with heart and a touch of magic and whimsy: A family learning to draw closer; how you should treat other people; and noticing the wonder of the world around you. As the story unfolds, the twoand-a-half tonne set moves smoothly on its turntable, assisted by an unobtrusive stage crew and enhanced with stunning projected lighting effects. A good musical demands great singers, and Mary Poppins delivers in every scene. Liz McKay sails through the challenging Mary Poppins numbers, Michael Cox and Racheal Kenyon (Mr and Mrs Banks) are first-class singers and Spencer Kingi effortlessly nails the delightful singing and dancing chimney sweep Bert. The Banks children, on this

particular night Grace Straker and Elliot Ham, are also a delight. They feature in nearly every scene and sing, dance and act like a pair of professionals. Grace and Elliot will alternate with Sophie Boyt and Rowan McKay-Simpson, and Mary Poppins’ understudy, Jessie Sawers, will play the Saturday matinees. There are statues that come to life, a tap-dancing chimney sweep flash mob and a stunningly colourful chorous presenting one of the feature numbers, ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.’ This is a huge undertaking, a technically demanding production involving a large cast and crew – 160 people working on and off the stage to entertain and delight. Director Duncan Whiting, with his eagle eye for detail, has once again confirmed his reputation as a theatrical force, backed to the hilt by musical director Kevin Moseley, choreographer Jeannie Mark, vocal director Samantha Baxter and production manager Neville Patchett.

Spencer Kingi plays chimney sweep Bert in Mary Poppins.

There has been some comment about ticket prices, but this is not a cheap show: you get what you pay for – three hours of music, magic and visual delight, brought to you by a hugely talented group of dedicated Marlborough people, who have given up countless

hours to produce a show fit for celebrating 100 years of musical theatre in Marlborough. There are only 17 performances of Mary Poppins. My advice is book now, before the wind changes and Mary Poppins flies out of Blenheim!

The Caring and Craft volunteers who started the Blenheim branch 26 years ago: Shirley Nicol, Grace Wood, Judith Kerridge and Dawn Amos.

By Bill McElhinney Four Blenheim women who founded a local Care and Craft centre are still serving their community 26 years later. Dawn Amos, Grace Wood, Judith Kerridge and Shirley Nicol are at the Nativity Centre in Alfred Street every Monday morning to set up the various activities for people to enjoy. There is a range of craft activities, morning tea and lunch provided for the 36 to 40 people who regularly attend. Care and Craft was founded in Auckland in 1974 by Rewa Henderson, and now has many centres operating throughout New

Zealand. The aim is to provide a range of interests and companionship for lonely or housebound people. “When we first started out we had up to 60 people turning up regularly,” Judith says. “We don’t have the same numbers now, as there are more activities available in the community. “And more people have moved in to rest homes, where there are regular organised activities.” But the Blenheim group still provides a valuable service, and those that attend really enjoy it. “They’re a lovely crowd and as well as providing something useful to do, you also benefit from the

socialisation,” Chris Fredericks says, who attends regularly. “There’s no need to stay at home and be lonely.” Care and Craft is not affiliated to any religious denomination, there are no paid staff, and costs are kept to a minimum. “We sell the things we make,” Dawn says, “so we are self-supporting. “And we get a lot of help from volunteers who help in the kitchen, and Lions Club men who come in and help us unpack and pack our craft materials.” “When we first started out we thought it might last only six months,” Judith says. “But here

we all are 26 years later!” “It’s a very satisfactory project,” Dawn says, “and it has brought a lot of pleasure to many people over the years.” Helpers organise and staff the centre, which runs on Mondays from approximately 10am to 2pm, except during public holidays. Helpers require no special qualifications, only a caring spirit and a willingness to assist with craft work, kitchen or general duties, or to drive the guests to and from the centre. “And we could always use some more helpers,” Dawn says. “If you’d like to come and lend a hand, we’d love to see you!”

Vegetable prices rose sharply in March, boosting vegetable prices 9.5 percent in the month, Stats NZ says. “ Vegetable crops have been affected by a run of storms in recent weeks – lower supply due to bad weather usually means higher prices,” consumer prices manager Matthew Haigh says. “In February, we saw rising prices also, due to a combination of humid weather and cyclone Gita. As expected, that wet weather has affected prices in March too.”

FRIDAY PRICE FORECAST

National Party leader Simon Bridges, second from right, enjoyed meeting Marlborough folk at a Chamber of Commerce breakfast on Tuesday. Pictured here with Simon are Matt Squire, Anthony Barnes and Nita van Grinsven.

Simon says: “I love quality time with family”

LOW PRICES ARE SWEEPING THE SOUTH!

By Bill McElhinney National Party leader Simon Bridges is looking forward to the end of the month. That’s when he gets to go on holiday with his family: wife Natalie, son Harry, four, and daughters Emlyn, six, and Jemima, four months. “We’ve had this holiday booked for ages,” Simon says. “I’m really looking forward to some quality family time.” Family is important to Simon, who was in Blenheim on Tuesday to meet local business leaders and visit several Marlborough organisations. “I’m really enjoying the job, being the party leader, but it does mean you are away from family a lot.” However, when he’s home on a Friday night, Simon enjoys just being Dad, and says he’s hands on, even with four-month-old Jemima. The youngest of six children, Simon grew up with a blended background. “My mum is Pakeha and

Dad is Maori,” he says. “I walked to school. As a family, we weren’t well off, but we never went without.” His father was a Baptist minister and Simon says he has a Christian faith, “and we were taught the value of serving the community. “But the National Party is a broad church and we have people from all faiths and walks of life,” he says. He met Natalie, who is English, when he went to Oxford University to do a postgraduate law degree. “I’m not sure about the early impressions I made. After our first meeting, Natalie told her parents she’d met a handsome Japanese guy!” In the last National-led Government, Simon held several ministerial portfolios including Labour, Energy, Transport, Communications, Economic Development and Leader of the House. As Transport Minister he was closely involved with the work on re-opening the

quake-damaged highway to Christchurch, and approving finance for a new double-lane bridge to replace the 100-year-old Opaoa bridge. But the $21.3 million project has now been put on hold as the new Labour-led government considers a policy statement on national land transport, which sets out how the land transport system will be funded for the next 10 years. “They should get on with the bridge,” Simon says. “It’s a safety issue and the funding was approved. There’s no reason not to go ahead, unless they are planning to divert the funding somewhere else. Then Blenheim will miss out. “The same applies to the plan to re-locate Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ Colleges. Now it’s in a holding pattern. A new co-educational college would give Marlborough pupils many more choices. They shouldn’t miss out on this.”

School remembers servicemen

Remembering the sacrifices made for the country is important at Rapaura School, where the classrooms have been named after returned servicemen. Last Thursday the school held their special Anzac service, attended by Marlborough mayor John Leggett and representatives from the Marlborough RSA. “When I was a boy, Anzac Day was more important to my Dad than any other day, even birthdays,” John told the children.

“I grew up knowing it was a special day and remembering the sacrifices that were made for us.” “It’s great to see the young people so interested in Anzac Day and what it means,” Marlborough RSA vice-president Terry Grant says. RSA officials say there had been a resurgence of interest in Anzac Day commemorations in recent years, and a lot of enthusiasm from the schools and youth groups.

These are some of the questions Council wants your feedback on. The Marlborough Transport Survey runs until Friday 4 May 2018 and information collected will be used to gauge interest in expanding the bus service to Renwick and from Burleigh/Boulevard Park on Taylor to Blenheim town centre. The Sun Roadside recycling Great to see letter on the roadside recycling on New Renwick and Omaka Rds. It is an absolute eye-sore. I feel for the neighbours who have to look at that all day as well as the passers by. One would have a hell of a job if they wanted to sell up their home, especially knowing what the neighbours would have to face looking at that mess.

Flag change

I have got some swan plants and just found some very small black bugs with 3 yellow spots on one end are they good or bad. They are not stink beetles as l have seen them. l’ve seen a praying mantis eating a big monarch caterpillar just as it was ready to turn into a chrysalis. Not a nice sight to see.

I wrote 2 Nat. Party & asked how John Key got $26million from (normally frugal) Bill English. Total waste of taxpayers money. I didn’t get a reply!

Yet again! Two adult males apprehended taking produce from the Community Gardens! Come on, give us a break. Ask for or grow your own!

Support for those offended by floral tributes to a burglar killed invading a 78 year olds home in England. In this country we have political posts held by fraudsters, drug users, activists, ex gangsters, child abusers and worse. We slap thieves hands! The first person to steal a Bugatti here will get an ONZ!

Sheets’n’things On behalf of all the volunteers at the above second-hand linen shop, we would like to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to all you generous donors out there in the community. Without your generosity we could not keep our doors open and serve the people we love to serve !

Club rugby Anyone thought that local club rugby is dying because local players can’t afford to spend all day away from work or family playing in Nelson?

I have a bone to pick wth people tht walk their dogs. I try to take pride in my lawns. People walking their dogs sick of them peeing on my front lawn. Grass is dead. Round my mailbox is the worst. So think about tht all you dog owners. Least you can pick up cat poo.

School site Hooray, hooray at last someone has come up with a great and sensible idea for the school ground at the A and P site. Neither this site or the racecourse are used to their fullest.

Human rights Just googled the right to clean air as a basic Human Right and guess what...it is. Maybe the Marlborough District Council might want to rethink putting a toxic polluting plant near residential homes. Might find themselves answering to bigger guns than angry locals.

Many Thanks to kind lady at Countdown Redwoodtown on Sunday who paid for my purchase. I will be sure to ‘pay it forward’.

Unhappy dog Do the dog owners in McAllister Place Renwick not hear them barking at all hours? Its driving your neighbours mad.

Boost me!

It is time we have vertically challenged drivers legally made to use booster seats just as younger kids. A sparkling brand new urban assault vehicle aka SUV came towards me and all I could be see was her forehead and sunglasses just above the steering wheel trying to see over the huge bulbous bonnet. Super tax Super is set @ 65/66% of Gross Average Wage & Hilarious but ridiculous. Wish I had a photo. adjusted 1st April annually. Taxed @ source (if u have no other income tax will be 17.5% ).

What a shambles

Insensitive Act Whoever the insensitive person was that killed his cattle beast in full view of SH63 (SH1) early afternoon on Monday 16th April, (we saw it go down), why didn’t you discreetly do that behind your vehicle & chiller you had towed into the paddock? Better still, why didn’t you take the cattle beast to another paddock out of full view of the public. It’s insensitive acts like that contributing to farmers being given negative press.

Lenny the cat Omg wht a great story and i am pleased u have him back.

The re sealing of middle Renwick rd this morning was utter chaos....traffic control was only half organised and an accident waiting to happen. Traffic coming in and out of the supermarket and traffic traveling from Westwood were all trying to merge into one lane with not enough signs guidance or speed restrictions, and the foul language emitting from the stms man was not helping one bit.....should of all been done at night.

Name supplied please. We reserve the right to publish at our discretion. Please note the opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the Sun management.

Bridge plans on hold Very pleased to read this news. Lets hope NZTA and Marlborough Roads can see sense. We need a Blenheim by pass to make it easier for these big rigs to avoid the congested obstacle course the current route is now. If they dont see that now look to the future. We locals want a common sense solution not a band aid.

Don’t panic Just a warning to anyone who may be passing by the Alfred Street Carpark building early Sunday morning, if you see people in the carpark building with guns, don’t worry, there is no need to call the police. This is just for a short film I am making, and the guns are fake. I have already notified the police but thought I should send a text in to text talk as well to give the public a heads up.

Speedsters Lansdowne St Saturday 14th. Cops had a field day catching up with the speedsters. Cops do come again.

More staff needed Countdown Redwoodtown is a great big new shop but it needs more staff on checkouts there seems to be less staff and yet its so busy. They have some amazing staff there especially one lady that seems to be there all the time but what amazing customer service she gives. I just think they need more of these wonderful staff so we don’t have to wait as long especially for 1 bottle wine and waiting for a supervisor to come along.

The fighter bomber that shares our town’s name By Phil Morrell On September 3, 1939, a flight of Bristol Blenheims marked the first RAF hostile entry of German airspace in World War II when crossing into enemy territory on a reconnaissance mission near Wilhelmshaven. The next day, the Blenheims attacked German naval positions at the Elbe Estuary, although this force of ten was reduced to just five, and many of the dropped ordnance failed to detonate. Despite their shortcomings, the aircraft were used in action and spent time in the skies above Norway, France, and the Low Countries. In these environments the aircraft proved to be woefully under-powered and under-armed. This led to revisions to the armament suite, and an increase in the number of machine guns carried. On March 11, 1940, a Blenheim claimed the RAF’s first sinking of a German U-Boat. The Blenheim was the first aircraft anywhere in the world to be equipped for night fighter duties. In the summer of 1940, during the Battle of Britain, a Blenheim

night fighter claimed the first aerial kill while carrying radar when it downed a raiding German Dornier DO 17 Medium Bomber. Despite its inherent deficiencies in both performance and firepower, the Blenheims played a crucial role in the night defence of Britain. Blenheims were used in anti-shipping sorties across the

North Sea and in daring low-altitude runs against German infrastructure. Overseas units were featured in the Middle East, Far East, North African and Mediterranean theatres, including time over Greece and Crete. By 1942, the Blenheims had outlived their usefulness and were

gradually replaced. A number of New Zealanders flew Blenheims during the war, notably Gage Darwent Sise. Sise was born on January 22, 1917 at Dunedin. After being educated at Otago Boys’ High School and Otago University, he trained as an accountant, and joined the RNZAF

as an aircraft hand on the outbreak of war. He was selected for pilot training, commissioned in May 1940, and posted to No.254 Squadron in England, operating the fighter version of the Blenheim. Gage flew many routine patrols in support of convoys, in addition to escorting light bomber formations attacking enemy shipping off Norway. On March 28, 1942, the squadron launched six aircraft in daylight to support “Secret Force Chariot”, the withdrawal of the survivors of the daring commando raid on St Nazaire. In searching for survivors, Gage’s aircraft was badly damaged by anti-aircraft fire and he was forced to crash land in Cornwall. After the war, Gage returned to New Zealand, where he lived at Dunedin. In 1980, he retired to Wanaka, where he enjoyed trout fishing and speed boating. Gage, who had reached the rank of Group Captain and had been decorated with the DSO and Bar, and the DFC and Bar, died February 2004.

STATE HIGHWAY 1 TO REOPEN FOR NIGHT TIME TRAVEL FROM 30 APRIL State Highway 1 (SH1) between Picton and Christchurch will re-open for night-time travel from Monday 30 April. NZ Transport Agency Earthquake Recovery Manager Tim Crow says, ‘We’ve delivered an extensive construction programme over the last year and the critical safety work will soon be complete. More than 30,000 square metres of steel mesh has been wrapped around slips south of Kaikōura and new infrastructure such as bridges and seawalls has been built to the north. All of this construction work is designed to ensure the route stays safe and resilient for the future and we’ll be continuing our work to finish and improve the corridor throughout 2018.’ The safety of road users on SH1 remains a top priority for the Transport Agency with road crews carrying out regular observations and inspections of the route through the night. ‘In the event of persistent heavy rainfall we may close the road as a precautionary measure – this can happen day or night.’

Allow plenty of time and stay up-to-date on real-time travel information via www.nzta.govt.nz/p2c or 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49). We recommend checking at least two hours before travel and during your trip. REMEMBER: Until SH1 reopens at night on 30 April, two sections are closed every night between 7.30pm and 7.30am – (north of Kaikōura) between Clarence and Mangamaunu and (south of Kaikōura) between Goose Bay and the SH1/Leader Road Intersection.

Expect trains at any time, from either direction

What to expect when the road reopens at night: • Multiple sections where traffic moves to a single lane will be controlled by traffic lights rather than current daytime Stop/Go controls • New signage including ‘no stopping’ and ‘rockfall’ signs will be installed (in addition to existing mesh and physical barriers) to protect road users and alert them to potential danger • Trains will be travelling day and night in either direction between Blenheim and Christchurch. Drivers should take care at level crossings and check both ways before proceeding • Different types of traffic will be using the route including an increase in heavy vehicles. Cyclists are advised to only use the road during the day for their own safety – due to multiple traffic lights and rockfall/no stopping areas • There will continue to be no stopping or camping in the two most earthquake-damaged areas just north and south of Kaikōura

FLETCH AND THE TEAM ARE HERE TO SERVE YOU. Phone: (03) 578 2200 • 26 Main Street, Blenheim

Tony Flood, owner of Radiator Services.

Radiator Services

When it comes to radiators and cooling systems, the team at Radiator Services can handle any job, big or small. It’s owned by Tony Flood and has been servicing the community for over 30 years. Located on Main Street in Blenheim, the business has steadily been growing busier and busier again thanks to the road reopening to Kaikoura, and Tony says he’s expecting it to continue. “After the Kaikoura earthquake it got a bit quiet but things are picking up again and we are welcoming back some of our regular customers,” he says. What makes Radiator Services the obvious choice is the decades of knowledge, expert advice and personal guarantee on every service. “By dealing with a locally operated business, you will get the right advice on what you need. Don’t take the chance on purchasing parts online as they may be wrong, costing you more in the long run,” he says.

It’s not only radiators that the team specialises in, but also cooling systems and associated parts and accessories. This time of year in particular, Tony says is a good time to have your radiator fluids checked. “A well maintained and properly functioning cooling system is crucial to the overall health of the engine,” he says. “The coolant/antifreeze in a vehicle’s cooling system helps to prevent the engine from overheating, and prevents the engine from freezing when temperatures drop in winter. “Vehicle manufacturers recommend having a coolant flush from time to time to ensure the cooling system runs smoothly, so if your vehicle is due call in or contact our friendly team,” he says. Whatever the vehicle, whatever the problem Tony and his team can help. Located at 44 Main Street, Radiator Services is open Monday to Friday from 7am to 5.30pm.

Keep cool, call the professionals As we head into winter and temperatures continue to drop, a very critical liquid that is essential for the running of your vehicle is bound to get affected. This liquid is referred to as “antifreeze” but is also known as “coolant.” The fluid is responsible for regulating the temperature in your vehicle’s engine and plays a critical role in protecting it from damage. The coolant is present in your vehicle’s radiator. It moves around the hood in a circular pattern while maintaining a constant temperature for crucial components in the engine. Without the liquid, the engine could easily overheat or crack. In normal weather conditions, water alone would be enough to cool the engine but

during winter, when temperatures are low, the water would freeze. Antifreeze is able to cool the engine and at the same time resist freezing. Just like other fluids in your vehicle, the coolant also degrades over time. The liquid may fail to work effectively at some point thus putting your vehicle’s engine at risk. Fortunately for you, it is easy to spot degraded antifreeze visually. Spent coolant usually has a rusty or brown color. You should quickly have your coolant replaced after seeing this color. Not sure what condition yours is in? No worries, just call into Radiator Services in Blenheim and speak to Tony Flood and his team.

Q A Q A Q A

My ideal day is spent... Ignoring the chores and going to the ocean, a beach to relax and eat yummy food with native bush to explore. One of my best holidays was... Every Kahurangi Lighthouse trip. Friends, rivers, children everywhere, camping at Big River, eels in the river pools and paradise to explore. One thing on my bucket list is... To swim behind a trawler off the West Coast to see what’s following them as they haul in.

Q A Q A Q A

Wairau Hospital core midwife If I could, I would... Eradicate child poverty and give every child the opportunity to reach their full potential. What’s your favourite meal? Blue cod, sashimi, scallops, mussels, creamed paua, roasts, Mum’s chowder, sticky date pudding, chocolate anything....can’t choose, just love food. My guilty TV pleasure is ...

I hardly watch television but I love to read.

Q A Q A Q A

My parents used to say... I’m off to see a man about a wigwam for a duck’s bridle... It meant mind your own business! The keys to happiness are... Music, the ocean, gardening, honesty, a job you enjoy, lots of hugs, having adventures with friends and family. Who would you love to share a meal with and why? Ernest Shackleton, Jacques Cousteau, Jane Goodall, David Attenborough, Peter Jackson, Ben Elton, Richard Branson to name a few!

Shambolic Ferns deserve hard questions Jenny-May Clarkson asks a question - the outrage ensues. This is why sports interviews are so dull. Clarkson, longtime TVNZ sports journalist, former Silver Fern and current top level netball coach asked Silver Ferns captain Katrina Grant if the players still had pride in the black dress? The question came after a nine goal defeat to England, the Ferns’ biggest losing margin to the team ever and hot on the heels of their loss to Malawi which will go down as one of the biggest upsets in Commonwealth Games history. Grant’s reaction to the question

was tears and a firm stance that there is pride in the dress. Social media erupted calling Clarkson a bully and demanding she be fired for her insensitive and harsh question. The reality is, that the question was fair, well-timed and came from someone with more credentials than most to ask it. Ultimately, the Ferns finished fourth, missing a medal for the first time in five efforts at the Commonwealth Games. Playing for New Zealand means you are accountable for your performance to the nation, the fans and the media.

Clarkson should be applauded for doing her job and asking the question on everyone’s lips who’s head wasn’t being overruled by their heart. Netball is New Zealand’s largest female participation sport and for our top side to be flopping so horrifically on a stage they are normally highly competitive is totally unacceptable. Fans have already called for coach Janine Southby’s resignation - and that of those who employed her at Netball New Zealand. Southby refuses to bow to that pressure in the immediate aftermath of the bronze medal

match loss. Clarkson made a post-match interview meaningful. So often those interviews, regardless of the sport, are full of cliched answers and offer no genuine insight into the game for the viewer. Perhaps Grant’s tears prove this team does care, in all fairness, much of the blame must go to the coaching staff and the administrators who appointed them. This Ferns side is a rabble, playing a sport with no real global reach and failing spectacularly. Good on you, Jenny May, the silent minority salute you.

Caitlin King noticed on national scene

By Peter Jones, Sport Tasman You’re the last line of defence, you spend the game wrapped in hefty protective clothing and are under regular bombardment by high-speed projectiles. Being a hockey goalkeeper is not everyone’s idea of an ideal sporting day out, but Caitlin King loves her work. The 17-year-old year-13 student at Marlborough Girls’ College has been spending her winter weekends in goal since she was 10 and relishes the challenge. Her skills have earned her a place in various rep sides over the past seven years, highlighted by selection in the Marlborough senior women’s team last year. Now her prowess has earned her selection in a Capital under-18 training squad which is preparing for the national tournament in July. She initially donned the pads and gloves when her under-13 side found they didn’t have anyone to play in goal. “Because of my height and build Dad [former Marlborough player Malcolm King] decided I would fill the goal and I didn’t look back.

“It was a little bit scary at first, as anything where you have balls flying at you would be.” Despite the fact her job is to put herself in the way of fast-moving missiles, Caitlin doesn’t

Caitlin has dreamt since age seven that she would one day play for the Black Sticks. consider goal a dangerous position. “I would probably consider myself safer than some of the other defenders, because in PCs (penalty corners) I have got $3000 worth of gear on while they have just got a hockey stick and maybe a face mask.” She credits the influence of her father for whetting her appetite for the game. “When I was growing up, being at the turf

every weekend, watching him play, grabbing a spare stick out of his bag and having a hit round at halftime. “He’s been basically my main coach. “He can be tough, but always supportive.” Caitlin will have her work cut out to make the Capital side. Seven goalies trialled for the squad. Caitlin and three others were chosen and two of them will be dropped before the final squad is named. After the regional under-18 tournament a New Zealand U18 development side is chosen. “To get picked in that side would be massive,” added Caitlin, who dreamt at age seven she would one day play for the Black Sticks. Although hockey is her main passion, Caitlin has enjoyed success in several other sports. Earlier this month she and fellow MGC student Amelia Hamilton won the pairs title at the Tasman secondary schools lawn bowls champs. She has also tried her hand at netball, softball, touch and cricket but it is on the hockey turf she feels most at home.

World record attemp Tomorrow will be the second Marlborough Earth Day Party at A&P Park in Blenheim, where organisers are hoping to set a world record. The attempt will be with a record number of E-bikes, and with the current world record set at 303, it’s hoped the event will attract more. The event runs from 10am – 3pm.

Taniwha tame Tigers at Oliver Park The Motueka Tigers rugby league team travelled to Blenheim to take on Wairau Taniwha on their home ground of Oliver Park last week. Taniwha are always strong at home and there was a good crowd of supporters on hand to cheer on both teams. The Taniwha kicked things off with Tana Pounui crossing twice followed by Tyler Aldridge, before Ben Kelly put some points on the board for the visitors. Tana showed why he was player of the day and crossed a third time, followed by Cairo Adam-Walsh and Ryan Craig also dotting down for the Taniwha. Half time score: 24-6 to the Taniwha. Tigers coach Roy Wattie obviously had a chat with the boys at half time as Sootaga Pani scored soon into the second half, with Taniwha responding with Fetu Ieremia getting on the score sheet. The ever dependable and very talented Sam Hedges, who was impressive with his strong running, crossed for the Tigers. The Taniwha pushed again and Meki Iatausili, Mel King and Taine Turnbull all crossed the line, before Luke Raharuhi finished the game off for the Tigers with another try for the visitors. Full time score: 46-18. This week sees Victory Phoenix hosting Motueka Tigers at Lower Ngawhatu. This will be Victory’s first home game at their new home ground. Kick off 2.30pm.
