TWICE WEEKLY

Family keen on a good duck season Continued from page 1 Mike will be heading to Christchurch where he will meet up with a group of his friends to go duck shooting, a tradition he’s enjoyed since his late teens. He says his group puts out around 60 decoys and occupies a large maimai in the middle of a lagoon. “It’s a good setup, fitting eight grown men and a cooker inside. We spend all of Saturday and Sunday on opening weekend there,” he says. Then later in the season he will be joined by his children Olly (15) who is also a keen hunter and his daughter Tylah (9). Tylah has already spent a day

deer hunting with her dad in Kaikoura earlier this year and shares the same enthusiasm. Mike, who grew up as a ‘city boy’, had his first taste of hunting in his teens and was hooked from that moment. “I don’t go out all season, just the odd days through the year. “I have mates that hunt all season, every second night,” he says. He has since gone on to become a shareholder at Premium Game Meats which hunts and processes wild game. He says the secret to successful duck hunting is “good calling and lots of decoys”. “Robo-ducks and flapper decoys work really well, as well

as decoys that have air pumps so they blow bubbles and create realistic movements to attract the ducks.” Looking forward to bringing home some good quality duck breast, Mike says one of his favourite things to do is have it made into duck salami. “I also love a good duck, goose, rolled pork where you bone out a duck, lay it on a pork flare fat, then layer that on top of a boned out goose which is rolled in boned out pork and rolled as a roast. “The pork fat keeps the meat beautiful and moist. “Mind you, you can’t go past a good orange marinade either,” he grins.

As well as game bird hunting, Mike hunts other species including chamois (pictured).

Renwick arrest A 43-year-old Marlborough man has been charged with burglary, theft, cultivation of cannabis and unlawful possession of ammunition following a search warrant in Renwick. He was arrested in relation to burglaries that have occurred in Renwick and Springlands over the past six weeks. He appeared in the Blenheim District Court last Monday. Police would like to thank the public for their help on this matter and say it’s a timely reminder for people to check that their vehicles, garages and sheds are locked, particularly at night. Blenheim Survivor voted off

New principal welcomed at Spring Creek School By Bill McElhinney Debbie Stanger likes smaller schools. On Monday Debbie was formally welcomed by representatives of the local community as the new principal of Spring Creek Primary School. Barney Thomas led a delegation from the Spring Creek community in a special welcome to Debbie, which included Spring Creek pupils singing their waiata, Te Aroha. Staff and pupils then joined the visitors for a special morning tea. “I love the smaller, rural schools, Debbie says. “You get to know everyone, there’s a real sense of community.”

Debbie had previously been deputy principal at Whitney Street School where, a few years ago, there were six women on a staff of just 18 who were all called Debbie. She has also been a principal at several other schools, including Linkwater Primary School. An experienced teacher who has taught all age levels, Debbie also has extensive management experience. “I’m looking forward to developing relationships with the students, staff, parents, whanau and wider community, as well as leading the learning at Spring Creek School,” Debbie says. “I’m very excited about connect-

ing with the local community and getting to know our 42 youngsters at the school. “I really like the cultural side of learning, and I love art, so will be looking for opportunities there.” Debbie will be teaching Rimu Room, year four to six children, for part of her working day and looking after the principal’s duties for the rest of the time. “I love to work collaboratively,” Debbie says, “so I will spend time getting to know the staff and how we can help each other.” Debbie has two boys of her own, Daniel, who is at Whitney Street School, and Thomas, who is at Bohally Intermediate.

She replaces former principal Phillipa Grey, who taught at the school for 12 years before taking up the principal’s role. Phillipa has moved to a new position in Nelson. Spring Creek School had its first major upgrade in 35 years in 2016-2017. At the beginning of last year pupils returned from the summer holidays to find a new library and two new open-plan classrooms replacing the old, badly insulated classrooms built in 1981. The library was opened up so it could become more of a research hub than a library.

Minister promises to get colleges plans moving By Bill McElhinney Plans to replace Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ Colleges are not on hold, Education Minister Chris Hipkins says. The minister visited Blenheim on Friday and was taken on a tour of both colleges, where he was able to see first- hand the problems with the college facilities. Both schools have building issues, especially Boys’ College where some of the classrooms are more than 80 years old. There are large cracks in the walls of some of the Boys’ College buildings as a result of the 2016 earthquake, and at Girls’ College many of the buildings on the McLachlan Street campus have issues with leaking and dampness. “I wanted to visit Blenheim to provide some reassurance to the community that nothing has been placed on hold,” Chris said after touring the college sites. “What we’re doing is the opposite of that. It’s been stalled for a couple of years now. “We’ve inherited this situation, and want to get things moving again. “So I wanted to come down and given that message to the schools and the community personally and directly. “Also it was an opportunity for me to get a sense of the lay of the land and the different options that are available. “It was very useful to talk to the Marlborough District Council,

which has offered us any help they can give, which is incredibly useful as well.” Over the next two months the Ministry of Education would be working to present options for co-location of the colleges, which was the community’s preferred option, Chris says. “And the ministry will be keeping the schools and the council informed of developments.” “It was great to have the minister visit our community to see firsthand our current secondary school facilities,” Mayor John Leggett says. John and other council officials accompanied Chris on his inspection of the colleges. “It was also very encouraging to hear from the Minister that he is looking to progress secondary education in Marlborough without delay, and that the Ministry of Education is considering all possible options for co-location” John says. “Council will continue to play a strategic planning role in the ministry’s future discussions and proposals - I’m confident we have value to add,” John says. During his visit Chris was shown a number of sites around Blenheim that the council has identified as possible locations for the combined college. “There is no doubt at all that we need this investment in our secondary education facilities and that Marlborough deserves it. “As everyone knows, some of our

Ann and Ian Topp recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Ian and Ann Topp: 60 years of motoring and marriage By Bill McElhinney It all started when young Ian Topp spied Ann Rutledge working next door. “I was an apprentice mechanic working for Lloyd Diamanti,” Ian says. “Ann worked next door in the office of her father’s business, which sold farm machinery. “I spent a lot of time looking over next door to catch a glimpse of her. I wasn’t always concentrating on the job,” Ian says with a grin. “He got lucky when we started going out together,” Ann says. “I had a car and he didn’t!

“He got lucky when we started going out together,” Ann says. “I used to pick him up on Friday nights from his home at Tuamarina, we’d go to the pictures, and then I’d take him home.” “But I did a lot of work for her on her car, a Vauxhall,” Ian says. “I spent a lot of Saturday afternoons on that car!” It paid off. Ian and Ann were married on March 22, 1958, and recently celebrated 60 years together. “The wedding was memorable for two things,” Ian says. “We were married in the old Presbyterian church and it was the minister’s last service before he retired and he stretched it out. “He went on and on at the sermon time, and our best man, who hadn’t been well, fainted!” When Ian finished his apprenticeship he worked for several other Blenheim firms before deciding to set up on his own as Topp Motors.

“I enjoyed working on the British, European and American cars, Jaguars, Mercedes and the like,” Ian says. Ann joined him in the business and as well as doing the office work, was called on to lend a hand in the workshop, where Ian was on his own. “She helped bleed brakes, hold bolts for me, she picked up and dropped off client’s cars, took them for a warrant of fitness.” “I got to drive a lot of different vehicles,” Ann says. “I really enjoyed driving.” Ann also had her own business for some years, Maxi Boutique in Scott Street, which she ran in partnership with Mary Wadsworth. “It was a busy time,” Ann says. “I was also president of the Marlborough Golf Club.” “But we got on well because we had our own interests,” Ian says. “I enjoyed hunting and Ann had her golf.” Ian and Ann sold Topp Motors when Ian retired in 2001. Jim Hasseldine, who had worked with Ian since 1975, took over and has since rebranded the business as Auto Super Shoppe. The couple had four children, three boys and a girl. Daughter Donna lives close by; eldest son David is in Murchison; another son, Brent, is a builder in Blenheim. Their youngest son, Brent, died tragically at the age of 24. Ann’s failing eyesight means she no longer plays golf, “and I miss it,” she says. Ian, however, still manages to get out hunting occasionally, and still does a few vehicle repairs for older, long time customers. “They ring me up and I say: ‘Take it to the garage.’ But they still want me to come out and do the job, so I will if I can,” Ian says.

He’s asking Marlburians what they want most for their province. I want the restoration of democracy. Everywhere I go folks are lamenting, we are no longer being represented, but increasingly ruled! Make the right Truck bypass choice Dear Ed, I was sorry to read that Reuben Garrett was knocked off his bike recently, and thankful he didn’t sustain a head injury in spite of the helmet being cracked in half. I can’t believe the “Choice Biking” Group want a choice - that is, no helmet. The sad thing - head injuries are NEVER planned. The result can be so severe that the head injured person probably won’t be capable of looking after themselves anymore. Surely a few minutes of “Helmet Hair” are not worth a possible brain disability? My solutions are for those refusing to wear helmets: 1) You pre-sign a waiver that you receive no taxpayer funded hospital assistance should you suffer a brain injury through your refusal to wear a helmet 2) You consider relocating to somewhere where helmets aren’t compulsory eg Holland 3) You get over your ego and wear your helmet Also, daily and nightly I see cyclists on the roads - wearing dark clothing, or having no bike lights. For the sake of all of us, please brighten yourselves up! No helmet = no brainer.

Dear Ed, Congratulations to Bruce McLauchlan for his excellent letter some weeks ago about the obvious need for a truck bypass to the east of Blenheim, and to subsequent letter writers. One mentioned cost. Interestingly with some experience way back with roading engineering, I did a “rough” calculation as to cost taking into account the purchase of land at vineyard market rates. My “guesstimate” came out at about $35 million. By coincidence a friend with vastly greater experience in roading came up with a figure of $30 million. Interestingly, last year, a person opposed to the logical idea of a bypass reckoned it was $100 million. He was shooting wildly into the wind. The concept of a truck bypass is apparent, as traffic delays on the Grove Road bridge are almost always caused by trucks. Re-route them east of Blenheim and everyone would be happy, from truckies to local motorists to ferry traffic. Retailers need not fear, despite the scaremongers. It would be good to see MDC taking a positive advocacy role. Tony Orman Blenheim

Helping you to fight the ‘flu By Bill McElhinney Did you know that as you get older, protection from earlier immunisations can begin to wear off? “Older people are particularly at risk of complications from influenza and shingles,” Marlborough Primary Health nurse Sally Gilmour says. “What many don’t know is that they are eligible for free immunisation against flu and shingles, as well as diphtheria and tetanus.” As part of national immunisation week, Sally is holding community information sessions in Blenheim for parents and caregivers.

“The theme of the week is immunisation for older people, so we especially encourage the over-65s to come along,” Sally says. The information sessions are being held at the Marlborough Community Health Hub in Queen Street today from 11.30am to 2pm and tomorrow from 10am to 12.30pm. Sally says everyone is welcome, and tea and coffee will be available. “We appreciate that people have lots of curiosity and quite specific questions about immunisation, so bring along all your questions,” Sally says.

“Sometimes it’s easier to talk to someone in person. We want to help people make informed decisions about immunisation. “We especially want older people to take up the offer of free flu vaccination this year as we are preparing for a particularly bad flu season after the one they’ve had in the Northern Hemisphere.” Sally says diseases like influenza and shingles can have a bigger impact on the health of older people. “Your general practice can provide free immunisations, which will help protect you, your Marlborough Primary Health nurse Sally Gilmour is holding comfamily and your grandchildren,” munity information sessions on immunisation today and tomorrow.

Isobel Olives’ Chris Piper with his olive trees and lip balm and Robyn Carter with her beeswax wraps.

Olive oil inspires reusable wraps By Megan Connolly Chris Piper’s love for olives began with his large olive grove in Huapai Auckland, working on the olives there for several years. It was in Auckland that he met a fellow photographer and friend Robyn Carter. Since Chris relocated to Marlborough two years ago, he has been working on developing his olive oil brand, Isobel Olives, with Robyn working for him on the website. Following his love and passion for nature, Chris works with a small gang of people to harvest the olives. Chris produces four flavours of oil from delicate to robust. His extra virgin oils are certified by Olives NZ to ensure they meet international standards. Chris had been eyeing up Marlborough as a home for around 20 years, knowing that the environment was the ideal place for growing and the lifestyle fitting his needs. Then along came the Isobel Olives estate and the rest is history. Chris’s lifestyle block in Rarangi spans a humble 90 olive trees; the sun, sea air and free draining soils providing perfect growing conditions. When asked how it all started, Chris says, “I wanted to educate

people on olives, have fun and do something I’m passionate about. There are huge health benefits from using EVOO – extra virgin olive oil. “It’s an amazing tree and has been around for thousands of years. It’s magical,” Chris says. Robyn found the inspiration for other products, lip balms and beeswax cloth wraps called ‘Bee Rapt’ when looking through a recipe book one day, seeing how olive oil can be used in different ways. Developing the wraps for Marlborough Earth Day held a week ago, the beeswax wraps are made with Robyn’s own two hands in her kitchen in Renwick. She says she finds making the wraps a ‘great way to add to the conversation of eco-friendliness while combining her passion for olives. “I like doing things with my hands and contributing to it all is just fun,” Robyn says. The wraps help to cut down the impact of single-use plastic in the household by being washable and reusable; keeping the freshness of the food using the natural products of the wraps. “If I could do a couple of things to make the world a better place, I’ll be happy,” Robyn says.

Music, movies and motor cars Robyn Bennett talks with Phoebe Leov and her love of music, movies and cars

At twelve-years-old Phoebe Leov’s aunt encouraged her to play the guitar. “I wasn’t the best at it; I just played the basics.” But her love of music continued with her singing in a choir and then she tried her hand at writing lyrics and composing music. She’s written five songs. “I’ve played songs for my friends and they thought they were OK, but I’m my own worst critic.” It wasn’t until Phoebe saw the movie Burlesque and heard the power of Christina Aguilera’s voice that she was well and truly hooked on singing. Exciting line-up coming for popular Book Festival By Bill McElhinney There’s something for everyone at the Marlborough Book Festival this year, festival committee member Sonia O’Regan says. The Book Festival volunteers launched this year’s full programme by distributing posters and brochures to cafes and shops around the region recently. “We’ve got an impressive line-up of authors coming this year, including the current New Zealand Poet Laureate Selina Tusitala Marsh,” Sonia says. Other guests are Vincent O’Sullivan, Jenny Pattrick, Glenn Colquhoun, Nicola Galloway, Diana Wichtel, Tom Scott, Harry Broad, Tina Makereti, Atholl Anderson and Alan Carter. “The mix means there is something for everyone at the event, from historical fiction to poems that have entertained the Queen,” Sonia says. “We’re so excited to have these acclaimed writers coming for the festival, which runs from Friday July 6 to Sunday July 8.” Audience members needn’t have read the books to love the sessions, Sonia says. “But chances are, after hearing from them first hand, you’ll be super keen to get home and read their work.” She expects some of the sessions to sell out

quite quickly as more people were travelling from out of town to the festival, which has earned a reputation for being a boutique event with a friendly atmosphere. The Boathouse Theatre in Blenheim will be the festival hub. Spy Valley cellar door, The Treehouse at Cloudy Bay wines, Hunter’s Wines and The Bell Tower at Dog Point Vineyards are other venues. An opening night session will be held at the Boathouse on the Friday in which five of the guest authors will provide a sneak peek of what is to come over the weekend. And the stars aligned to enable the festival to hold an extra session in association with Matariki at which Selina Tusitala Marsh will speak at the new Picton Library on Monday, July 9. The Marlborough Book Festival is run by volunteers under a charitable trust and strongly supported by sponsoring businesses and the Marlborough District Council. It’s a treat for both book lovers and guest authors in the middle of winter. Tickets can be bought from the festival website www.marlboroughbookfest.co.nz or over the counter at Paper Plus Blenheim.

Open day a chance to pat friendly alpacas By Bill McElhinney The alpacas walk right up close and gaze at you inquisitively. “Don’t worry, they’re very friendly. They’re sociable animals, they like being around people,” Kim Chapman-Taylor says. Kim and his partner, Helen, have a herd of 32 coloured suri alpacas on their farm/ homestay, Falcons Rise, on Brookby Road, about 10 minutes from Blenheim. On Sunday they will host an open day from 10am to 3pm and people will be welcome to come and get up close to these friendly animals. Alpaca owners throughout New Zealand open their farms to the public every year to promote alpacas, alpaca fibre, and alpaca products. “It’s one day a year when

we can all celebrate alpacas and share the joy of owning them with the public,” Kim says. “Alpacas are easy care and make lovely pets. All ours have names. “They’re great with kids and they love a pat.” K im a nd Helen have farmed alpacas since 2003. It all started when they bought a six hectare lifestyle block in Christchurch which was growing pears and grapes which were not doing well. “We pulled them out,” Kim says, and then Helen said: “Why don’t we get some alpacas?” They bought three animals and before long started breeding them. When they moved to Marlborough they searched for a property where they could keep and grow their herd. “It wasn’t easy,” Kim says.

“Most of the land is being used for grapes, and it was hard to find a place that fitted our needs.” But now they are settled on a hillside in Brookby Road, with stunning views over the nearby vineyards, and a herd of happy alpacas grazing nearby. The alpacas are bred for their fibre and are shorn once a year in mid-November by shearer Mike Banks, who specialises in the job and travels around New Zealand shearing the gentle animals. “The alpaca fibre is like superfine merino,” Kim says. “It’s soft like cashmere, warmer than sheep’s wool, hypo-allergenic and almost completely waterproof. “ The fibre is used to make a range of products such as duvets, blankets and clothing items such as scarves and ponchos.

Education Looking for home-based childcare for your children? • Blossoms provide a variety of home-based childcare services, including Educators caring for children in their own homes, nannies and Au-pairs. • We offer generous subsidies toward the cost of care, with no administration costs. • Or are you interested in caring for children in your own home? • Contact us today!

Age is no barrier when it comes to education.

It’s never too late for education It’s becoming much easier for adults to train or retrain with numerous options available for training and study. Whether it’s a career change you are wanting, or you want to advance yourself in the field you are currently working in, pursuing educational training is a great option and it’s never too late. If you left school without a qualification, that does not mean you can’t enter tertiary study or trade

training, so here are some options to consider. • Part-time study while working • Full-time study • Free courses • Training Opportunities (TOPs) courses (government-funded) • Distance study • Apprenticeships • Industry training The decision you make will depend on your location, time, family and financial commitments. In most cases, there will

be a few different ways to do the same training, so it is important that you pick your preferred structure of training and the course that fits your circumstances. You will also need to decide what level you want to study at – your options range from foundation courses in essay writing and study skills through to Doctorates. Do you qualify for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)? If you have been working for some time,

have already completed a qualification or started one at another time, you may be able to apply for Recognition of prior learning (RPL). This will give you credit for skills or training you have already done, which you can put toward another qualification. This is worth considering as it could take some time off your future training. Talk to your local training institution and find out what exciting career options await.

Mothers returning to work Is your maternity leave close to finishing and you are preparing to return to work? Or are you returning to the workforce after starting your family and need childcare? As a parent, it’s an important decision finding the right childcare for your children. There’s plenty of options available in Marlborough including private home-based care. Janine Collett, owner of Blossoms Homebased

Childcare is hugely passionate about early childhood education, and shares some advice on what to look for when choosing childcare. • Primary care giving (either in a Homebased situation or choose a center that provides this). • Look for adults who respond to the children, who get down to the children’s level, who show respect for children and provide clear expectations of rules and

boundaries and adults who are clearly interested in children as people. • Look around at the other children, are they confident and happy? • Chat to the adults about how they deal with certain behaviors, ask about what their priorities are when caring for children. • Ensure the option feels right and fits with your own Blossoms Homebased parenting values. • Trust your initial gut Childcare owner Janine Collett. feeling.

Kalita Cresswell putting on Alison Dight’s wig for her character ‘Mrs Brill’.

Behind the scenes at Mary Poppins By Megan Connolly Blenheim Musical Theatre’s Mary Poppins is in its final performances and it’s the faces you don’t see working hard behind the scenes that make the show how it appears on stage. With 17 shows in total and over 100 people working behind the scenes at a time, they devote their time to doing things from costumes to props through to makeup and

catering. You can only imagine how many cups of tea and biscuits it takes to feed the army, something catering manager Sheryl Whiting does every night. Before the cast can even get on stage and the orchestra plays it’s first note, the cast gets their makeup done by the makeup team, led by Linda McKinley. They then head over to the hair and wig

ladies, led by Sarah Kernick who fits the beautifully crafted wigs to each head. The costume ladies are ready for a ‘quick change’ and stand by to transform park strollers into colourful park goers of Jolly Holiday at the drop of a hat. If it wasn’t for the large props team and stagehands standing by, the furniture that transforms what would otherwise be a plain stage into a wonderland and magical set

couldn’t move seamlessly. Not to mention the sound, tech, and front of house teams just to name a few, who also keep the show ticking along professionally. Everybody behind Mary Poppins has generously given their free time to the production and maintenance of a show that puts a little bit of magic back into everyone’s life.

71 Market St BlenheiM Some of the first riders arriving at the Blenheim Fire Station on Saturday for the Rescue Ride.

Rescue Ride roars into town By Celeste Alexander The weekend’s wet forecast put a damper on weekend events, but the Ulysses Club Marlborough Branch was determined to make its annual Rescue Ride a success. The fundraising Rescue Ride was held on Saturday, with over 60 motorcyclists riding from Havelock to the Blenheim Fire Station.

The procession was led by Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Nigel Botham in one of the station’s fire trucks, making for a great display for those watching. The ride finished at the Blenheim Fire Station where riders, volunteer firefighters and the public mingled, enjoyed a sausage sizzle and took a tour of the station.

The Ulysses Club Marlborough Branch members sold badges on the day as well as holding its own raffle later that evening to benefit the Blenheim Fire Station. Branch co-ordinator Kelvin Watson says a final tally will be counted tomorrow, and a cheque will be presented in the near future.
