Homeless haven

By Bill McElhinney One of Blenheim’s top motels has been converted to accommodation for people in urgent need of housing. Brydan on Rose, on the corner of Rose Street and Middle Renwick Road, was bought last year by the Ministry of Social Development and will be officially opened on Friday by Building and Construction Minister Jenny Salesa. Transitional housing complex opens Friday Continued from page 1 It will be used to support Blenheim families and couples who urgently need a place to live while they find longer-term housing. Last year the government was spending up to $100,000 a month in emergency grants in Marlborough housing homeless families and individuals in motels. The Christchurch Methodist Mission has been contracted by the Ministry of Social Development and will manage the facility in conjunction with Crossroads Marlborough

Les Whiteside

Charitable Trust. The property has 16 units and will take only couples or small families, with a maximum of 50 people. “This has been a long time coming, but we’re thrilled to be finally opening this,” Crossroads Trust manager Janette Walker says. “We have filled the place already with allocated people and we have a waiting list of those who need this support. “The people we are helping have an urgent need for a place to stay and are likely to already live and work in the

community, and have children going to local schools.” People needing emergency housing are usually in this situation because where they were renting was sold and they had to leave, or they have been living with family and friends in overcrowded or substandard accommodation, Janette says. “In all cases they have struggled to find a place to rent and will have been assessed by Work and Income as having the greatest priority.” Steve Tyler, the full-time property and maintenance manager, will live

on the site and a team of staff has been employed to support families, manage tenancies and ensure things run smoothly, Janette says. “Because the staff are based on the site there will always be someone there for the neighbours to communicate directly with if they need to,” Janette says. “The property and tenancies will be carefully managed and great care will be taken when placing families there.”

TWICE WEEKLY

By Bill McElhinney The former Brydan on Rose motels have been modified to provide warm, dry and safe short-term accommodation for people in need, the Ministry of Social Development says. Fencing has been added, a swimming pool has been filled in, smoke alarms have been updated and work done on some of the units. There is a mix of studios, one-bedroom units and two-bedroom villas. Each has its own kitchen facilities and there is a common laundry facility. Clients will pay income-related rent as they would if they were renting any other property. Spaces have been created for residents’ parking and an on-site meeting room will be used to run workshops and support services for the people living there. Families will live at the facility for an average of 12 weeks while they look for longer-term accommodation. While they are there, support from providers will help put them in a stronger position to secure a longer-term home. The government has bought a number of similar properties in other regions to use for transitional housing. In each case people have benefited greatly from the chance to have a safe place to live while they find longer-term housing, the ministry says.

Derek Harding and Sharaine Steenberg at St Andrews Presbyterian Church, where Sharaine was inducted as a minister on Sunday.

Busy wife and mum takes up role as a Presbyterian minister By Bill McElhinney Wife, mother and Presbyterian minister – Sharaine Steenberg embraces each role with a huge smile and heaps of enthusiasm. On Sunday Sharaine was inducted as a minister at St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Blenheim. She will work 20 hours a week for the church and aims to reach out more into the local community. “The church should be arms, legs and feet in the community,” Sharaine says. “We should be Jesus among the people!” Sharaine is already making inroads in Blenheim as a Neighbourhood Support area coordinator.

Her background is in community development, so when she was approached to take on the Neighbourhood Support role, she “jumped at it.” “We’re focused on being the eyes and ears of our community; caring for our neighbours and sharing information. We’re focusing on how we look after one another. “My heart is in community development,” Sharaine says. “We want to create a safe space so people can transform their communities.” Sharaine and her husband, Edgar, came to Blenheim from Pretoria, South Africa, two years ago. They have three children: Rein-

hartd, two; Sune, five; and Karli, six. “New Zealand is a better environment for our children,” Sharaine says. “And we also have my parents here, so we have family support as well.” Sharaine’s Mum, Simone Oosthuizen, is a dental surgeon at Blenheim dental surgery Durrheim and Associates. Sharaine was an ordained minister for 10 years in the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa, and she has a Master of Theology degree. “I was attracted to working for the Presbyterian Church here

because it is a church where the people are doing it for themselves. There is less emphasis on ministers and more on the people,” Sharaine says. “The Presbyterian Church has elders and church members who carry out the work of visitors in the community.” Sharaine has a real zeal for the church being in the community, so that will be a focus, along with youth work and taking two services a month. “We have beautiful people with a great heart for their community,” Sharaine says. Derek Harding will continue as interim moderator at St Andrews.

Blenheim store robbed The staff at Benge & Co Green Grocers have been left feeling shaken this week after the store was robbed around 6am on Monday morning. The manager of the Grove Road shop was confronted by at least two people, Blenheim Police say, who assaulted the manager when inside the premises and made off with a quantity of cash. The manager was taken to hospital but later discharged, and owners say he’s doing fine. Staff worked hard to get the store reopened after lunch on Monday and

it’s back to business as usual. Police however are continuing their enquiries into the aggravated robbery and are appealing to the public for any information. Detective senior sergeant Ciaran Sloan, area investigations manager, says anyone who was in the area before 6am on Monday, or who may have any information, please call local police. “Enquiries are ongoing into the incident, but information can be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on It was back to business as usual yesterday for Benge & Co Green Grocers, after a robbery occured early Monday morning. 0800 555 111.”

Teachers meet on Friday By Bill McElhinney Secondary teachers in Marlborough are meeting this week to discuss their upcoming collective agreement negotiations with the government. Teachers will attend a paid union meeting at the Marlborough Boys’ College hall at 1:30pm on Friday. Marlborough Boys’ College will close at 12.25 pm on Friday to allow teachers to attend the meeting and bus students will be supervised at the college until the buses depart at the normal time. Parents of bus students who want to make alternative arrangements to collect pupils early can phone the school office, 5780119, or email office@mbc.school.nz At Girls’ College classes will run until end of period three. Students can go home after then

with the permission of parents. Supervision for students who stay at school will be provided in the school library. School buses will run at the usual time. “Our profession is facing an unprecedented shortage of teachers; now is the time for the government to work with us to implement the solutions and make secondary teaching the desirable career it should be,” PPTA Marlborough chair, Ngaire Searle, says. “Teachers care deeply about the students they work with. “We won’t sit back and allow their futures to be affected by a degraded education system.” “At our meeting, we’ll be discussing what we want to take to the negotiating table and the solutions we expect.” Ngaire says.

The Fundrasing and Social team (FAST) from St Mary’s Preschool organised a Royal wedding day on Sunday at collected donations to go towards their completely not-for-profit preschool while enjoying their scones provided by Countdown Springlands,

and tea and coffee from New World. From left: Hannah Harris, Kirstine Friend, Holly Sowden, Gemma Amsler, Jenna O’Brien, Natalia Vasquez, and Mandy Li and son James Barker.

Crashing end to royal wedding Local bus driver Laurie Johnston came across this crashed vehicle along the Kenepuru Road in the Marlborough Sounds at the weekend. He says he stopped and spoke with the owner of the car who was organising a tow vehicle. “He said his wife had been driving it late at night after watching the live royal wedding coverage

on Saturday night, and was lucky to escape what could have been a more serious situation. “The car was straddling the edge of the road and to the left was a drop... it was lucky she didn’t go over. “It wouldn’t have been the best ending to the royal wedding,” Laurie says. Front view of the crashed car. Photos provided.

“A man who stops advertising to save money is like a man who stops a clock to save time”

The car came to a rest with one wheel on the road and the other dangling over the edge.

Blenheim talk on sex after a heart attack anxiety By Bill McElhinney Can I have sex after a heart attack? It’s a question heart attack victims want to ask, but one many health professionals appear reluctant to talk about. “Sex is part of a healthy lifestyle and is safe for the vast majority of heart patients,” recently-retired cardiologist and associate professor of cardiovascular medicine, Stewart Mann says. A recent Australian Heart Foundation survey revealed that less than 25 per cent of health professionals talk to patients about sex after a heart attack. The survey found that heart-attack survivors are worried about having another heart attack, performance and over-exertion. Depression, fatigue, a lack of cardiac fitness, pain or discomfort, and sexual dysfunction, including low libido, were also shown to play a role in anxiety about resuming sex. Two out of three heart

Retired cardiologist and associate professor of cardiovascular medicine, Stewart Mann.

attack survivors said that having a heart attack had affected their sexual activity, yet only one in four had spoken with a health professional about it. The survey also found that while most health professionals recognised the importance of talking to patients about sex and intimacy, many lacked the time, confidence, protocols or resources to do so. However, the Hea r t Foundation believes such

conversations are necessary, and the Nelson branch of the foundation is hosting a public talk in Blenheim on the topic. The talk will address the difficult questions that people are often too embarrassed to ask their doctors, such as, “Can sex induce another heart attack?” and “Will I have sexual problems now I am on medication for heart disease?” Stewart, former head of the department of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Otago, says in his experience many patients are anxious about resuming sexual activity after a heart attack. If this is something you, or a loved one, is concerned about the Heart Foundation invites you to attend their free public talk on Friday, June 1, at 10.30am at The Foundry, John Street, Blenheim. Winter driving Dear Ed, During winter driving gets even more hazardous. Roads can be wet and slippery. Lighting is often poor. Speed limits are set for the ideal conditions, i.e. dry roads and good lighting and a properly maintained vehicle. Anything less demands a speed that may be lower than the legal limit. So during the winter months get your car checked especially tyres and brakes even if WoF isn’t due. Allow extra time for your journey, be patient and drive to the conditions. That way we’ll all get through winter safely. Evan Robinson Blenheim

Budget wins Dear Ed, The announcements in Budget 2018 offered a lot for the Kaikoura Electorate. Key New Zealand First wins include: The finalisation of the first year’s allocation of the $1 billion per annum Provincial Growth Fund including $245 million to support the Government’s One Billion Trees planting programme; extending free GP visits to 14-year-olds and under, and free prescriptions; $1 billion over four years towards lifting our national investment in research and development to 2 per cent of GDP from 1.3 per cent currently. There was also the introduction of an independent Climate Commission based on the recommendations of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, $298.8m in new operating funding for first steps towards the goal of 1800 new police officers, $9.3m in new operating funding over the next four years to improve our off shore biosecurity systems, and $26.8m operating funding over four years to double the number of places in the Limited Service Volunteer Programme. The programme is a six-week hands-on motivational and training programme for young people run by the New Zealand Defence Force on behalf of Work and Income. A fairer tax system and a crack-down on tax dodgers is forecast to generate an extra $726.3m over four years. We are rapt to see New Zealand First policies in the Budget. Jamie Arbuckle New Zealand First Kaikoura Chairman

Basic learning such as reading, writing and maths should be completed by age 14 and students should then start studies that will lead them to their future areas of employment. Courses which lead to apprenticeship training should be provided at fourth form level. Learning is a lifetime experience, so teach them how to learn. Southland has a polytech. Why not start a Marlborough technical institute? Doug Irving Blenheim

Salmon toxic waste Dear Ed, King Salmon still dumping dead fish at the MDC landfill, why are these fish still dying at even higher rates today. MDC refused this material previously, as they felt it posed a bio-security issue for their site. King Salmon then transported it elsewhere to be rendered into animal protein. What went wrong. Now it seems they wish to remove toxic waste from under their farm structures for composting. There is no doubt fish farming has its place

Dear Ed, The people of Marlborough are in for a real treat when the brass bands of New Zealand come to town. These musicians represent the benchmark of brass band excellence, measured against the very best the world has to offer. Long before I was born my Dad won the 1928 side drum section, my late son had a music teacher whose name shines among a galaxy of brilliant band leaders who have been at the helm, baton in hand. His name that these men will recall with affection, as I do at 84 , was the late Mervyn Waters. Bruce Whiteside, Miami, Qld

Jamie Arbuckle

Colleges plan Dear Ed, The Marlborough colleges should be co-located on the two present sites. The Boys’ College should be for going on to higher education, such as university, and the Girls’ College should become a technical training establishment. Buy the residential properties adjoining the Boys’ College so this land can be used for new classrooms for boys, girls or both. Demolish the old Boys’ College main building and the old woodwork and metalwork buildings if they are no longer suitable, and rebuild as required.

Brass band treat

in food production, but it can’t work under the current operating model, as it’s clear that it just doesn’t work. Using the sea as a septic tank may have been acceptable business behaviour last century, when this marine farming model King Salmon currently use was first brought about, but I think it’s time we moved on. Stop being a follower King Salmon, and start being a leader. Innovate, and become the world leader in sustainable salmon farming. David Lloyd

Dear Ed, After reading Jamie Arbuckle’s recent letter to The Sun, I can’t determine whether he is an eternal optimist or just extremely naive. Given this coalition’s performance to date, it seems highly probable that Marlborough will not get new colleges or a new bridge. Winston Peters is notorious for untruths, false allegations and broken promises. Before the election he stated that a non negotiable bottom line was a referendum on the Maori seats. He broke that promise before parliament even sat. He has been busy giving untold millions of dollars in handouts to various Pacific islands at a time when New Zealand is enduring perhaps it’s worst ever levels of poverty and homelessness. Shane Jones at the same time is pouring money into doubtful projects, (notably in areas with high Maori populations) while at the same time ripping the financial heart out of Taranaki. The New Zealand First policies for the regions seem to be very selective. And just last week Peters, in his grandstanding way, publicly threatened two Labour Party ministers. I find it sad that a respected councillor would want to be associated with a political party with such standards and that clearly has no interest in our electorate. Was it a case of “go for the gap?” Mainlander Blenheim

Traffic bypass Dear Ed, Heavy vehicles should be removed from the town centre. A new road should be established from Tuamarina to Marshlands, then across to the intersection of the main highway at the Montana/Brancott Winery corner. The road should be built up to become a seawall in the event of a tsunami and be clear of possible flooding. The current proposal for a new two-lane bridge leading to the town centre will not improve

the flow of traffic, but will add to congestion. The narrow streets and local traffic will hinder the flow of all traffic. The time has arrived to do the right thing. Separate the traffic. Trucks don’t stop and shop, they just clog everything up for the local people. There is already a special truck stop on the highway, just past the winery. Doug Irving Blenheim

Push for bypass Dear Ed, I ask Marlborough District councillors and the Chamber of Commerce to ask Marlborough Roads to push for a bypass of State Highway One. To keep most of the large truck and trailer units out of Grove Road and Main Street would be a big advantage to locals. Most other towns and cities have done this. Divert State Highway One at Rowley Crescent with a roundabout to Blenheim and a truck bypass over the railway line, then a roundabout to Lower Wairau Road.

Go straight to the bend in the bank on Roses Overflow. Follow the bank then cross Roses Overflow with several large culverts into Rowberrys Road. A roundabout on Dillions Point Road along a vineyard, bridge the Opawa River to a roundabout on State Highway One west of the old St Andrews Lodge. Now with the Riversdale residents requesting another way in/ out, with a short bridge over the Opawa River. Budge Street could join up with the bypass. Bruce McLauchlan Blenheim

Dear Ed, I am a regular user of the Opawa River and use the Simonsen Reserve to launch my kayak. It is with considerable dismay that there is a group of low life starting to use the Reserve as their personal dumping ground. This week there has been a deer carcase dumped on the launching ramp. Alongside the ramp is a heap of grass clippings and a pile of mussel shells. Also the untidy park-up brigade are leaving takeaway rubbish and plastic bottles in greater quantities and now the 4x4 hoons

are digging large mud holes in what was once a nice picnic area. Obviously these arrogant individuals have no pride in their district and do not realise that the ratepayers have to foot the bill to clean up the mess. The river is also slowly filling with plastic and glass bottles and empty cans making what is a lovely pleasant cruise look like a visit to the local rubbish tip. Come on you lot of litter bugs lift your game. If you can cart it in you can cart it out. Kayaker Blenheim

crackpot idea? Did Councillor Sloan’s works committee okay it? Hacked off Ratepayer Blenheim Deputy Mayor Terry Sloan replies: The new cycle link will be a life saver for our young people on their bikes. It makes it safer to cycle to Whitney Street School and provides a safer route for kids from the south side of town to Bohally and the Girls’ College. Not only that, it provides a north-south connecting spine through the middle of town for adult cyclists, and joins up with the Taylor River Reserve path and cycle way. The Eltham-Beaver Cycle Link is part of the Urban Cycleway Programme, a shared investment from the Urban Cycleways Fund, the National Land Transport Fund and a third from this council. Community consultation held in July 2017 included a letter to all affected residents and a public meeting. Positive feedback from those residents helped to fine tune the design.

Eltham Road cycle lane Dear Ed, The council in its infinite wisdom has put a cycle lane and kerbing out into the carriage way in Eltham Road. The result has been to narrow the carriage way and impede traffic flow. This is a frequently used route for many motorists to link from Maxwell Road to High Street via Eltham Road and Lee Street. Now a car turning off Eltham Road into a driveway or side street stops for on-coming traffic and other cars behind have to stop, thus completely stopping traffic flow. Cars parked against the kerb restrict the street to virtually one way. Shambles. Apart from the bad effects, why was a cycle way put in? For Bohally and Girls’ College pupils? But wasn’t that the purpose of the Taylor River reserve sealed pathway? Apart from the stifling of traffic flow, it lacked justification. Stupid move, costly move. No wonder rates are so high. It is a bad joke but contractors will be smiling on the way to the bank. Which staff came up with a

A talented young lady Robyn Bennett talks with Georgia Ryan, a young lady who has accomplished so much in a short time. A self-claimed ‘horsey’ girl Georgia Ryan leads a busy life, but she always makes time for her six-year-old horse, Gymbob. Gymbob was named by his previous owners. “Gymbob is a Gym Bello Warmblood so the first part of his name made sense, and Bob was a natural follow-on but everyone just calls him Gym,” Georgia says. Georgia rides Gymbob four times a week and has competed for three years in both Dressage and A & P Show events. The perfect-for-each-other combination has won a number of events including Champion and Reserve Champion for both disciplines. “I’d love to do some jumping with Gymbob in the future too.” Not having a clear career direction when she left school, Georgia’s love of animals saw her spending three months at Camp America’s Road’s End Farm in New Hampshire as a horse riding counsellor. The camp catered for 80 girls and Georgia’s role was to teach girls how to ride, hack out and care for the horses. “At that time I was also a trained life guard at Rarangi Surf Lifesaving Club so I did a bit of lifeguarding too.” After her three-month stint finished, Georgia and a friend embarked on a Trek America tour covering the southern states of the US, finishing up in San Francisco. “And, yes, we did visit Georgia. “It did get a bit confusing when in Georgia and I introduced myself as Georgia, but everyone was really friendly and we had a laugh about it.” Back in New Zealand, Georgia worked at Brancott Estate at the cellar door for two years. She was then headhunted by Bayleys and worked for two years as a personal assistant. Her interpersonal skills were recognised and she was offered a buyers manager position.

In December 2017 she was given the opportunity to move up once again to a full time real estate salesperson, specialising in the Marlborough Sounds properties. “It was a fantastic move forward, and I love the challenge.” Georgia is a trained classical singer. “I began singing lessons when I was ten-years-old. “I competed all over the South Island and at times, had some great success.” At Marlborough Girls’ College, Georgia was in Bella Voce. This group competed all over the world, where Georgia was fortunate to travel with the group to Hawaii to compete where Bella Voce won. She also sang at local events in Blenheim including singing the national anthem at memorial days, as well as being in a jazz band as a soloist. “As a classical singer, some competitions required me to learn and sing 10 different songs and at times, the majority of them were in foreign languages - this was stressful as I am a perfectionist. “I had to learn techniques to ensure I was rolling my Rs correctly and all pronunciation was precise.” Now Georgia just sings on a social basis or at request, but wants to get back into it again. Working and riding Gymbob doesn’t leave time for much else. “The perfect day off would be to ride and potter around with Gymbob for a good few hours and then meet up with friends for a relaxed afternoon.” Georgia is a big family person who enjoys catching up with her two sisters and parents at their family bach in the Tory Channel. “We love boating, fishing, swimming and eating – the typical family get away.” More travel is definitely on the agenda. “Maybe in 2019 I’d like to go on holiday. “I’m thinking Italy, France, Greece or Spain!”

Loan Market mortgage adviser Shane Hendrikz.

Loan Market Mortgages, financial plans, insurance and Kiwisaver... who can you turn to for advice on all of these services? Loan Market mortgage adviser Shane Hendrikz! Shane has been helping a wide range of people throughout Marlborough since arriving in Blenheim two years ago. Born and raised in South Africa, Shane first began working in the finance industry after leaving school. He landed a job in a bank where he worked “a long time” on everything from customer service to exchange control. He left the bank to become a mortgage broker with a colleague but when the market ‘crashed’ and people weren’t applying for as many home loans, Shane went in a different direction and started a business in property management. In 2010 Shane and his family made the journey to New Zealand and lived in Christchurch where he joined the Loan Market brand. Unfortunately the earthquakes hit so the family relocated to Auckland, but it was after passing through Marlborough several times that the family decided this was where they wanted to settle. With him Shane has brought the Loan Market brand to Marlborough as well as his extensive experience in finance and property industries, and it’s this knowledge that enables him to understand people’s needs. “I am your knowledge bank... just ask and I will be able to assist,” he says. Shane will work alongside people who are looking to do everything from refinancing and applying for personal or business loans, right through to assisting first home buyers. He’s also very passionate about the benefits of KiwiSaver. “KiwiSaver is a fantastic tool and is hugely

beneficial to those wanting to get a home loan. I work with people to provide the right advice on their investments so that they are getting the most out of their KiwiSaver. “I’ve met people who didn’t have quite enough for a deposit so we’ve looked at their KiwiSaver and worked out how they can get from A to B. Often it hasn’t taken much to tweak their KiwiSaver and in no time, they’ve reached their goals,” he says. Because Shane specialises in first home buyers and the restructuring of existing mortgage finance, he’s the obvious choice for people wanting to find the best home loan terms and rates. Shane has regular contact with a variety of lenders and takes the hassle out of the application process. “First I sit down with the client to work through what their goals are, we look at their current financial situation and tailor a financial plan. I then send an application off to lenders and if I pick up on any issues along the way I can make adjustments. “What people need to know is that a mortgage broker works for the client, not the lender,” he says. One area of the business that is keeping Shane busy is working with young first home buyers. “It’s a lot to do with their KiwiSaver that helps them into their first homes. I see couples who aren’t on high salaries but the banks are still willing to help... it just goes to show that if when you leave school and work for about five years to save and build up your KiwiSaver, you can do it!” For more information contact Shane, and find out how he and Loan Market can make your financial goals a reality.

Marlborough Fire Installations Standing up on a ladder working on the installation of a chimney flu, Doug Powell of Marlborough Fire Installations has been busy in the lead up to winter. Doug explains it is a simple process to have a fire installed with him, as he takes care of all the steps from pre-site inspection through to installation. “Basically if you have purchased a fire from a retailer, I can organise the council permit, organise the tile hearths to be laid and install the fire and chimney flu. “Likewise if you haven’t already

purchased a fire, I can source and install it,” he says. Marlborough Fire Installations is completely independent of fire manufacturers, meaning he is not biased and will work with all makes and models. “Fire retailers have my details so they can pass them on or you can contact me directly. I will come and meet with you to explain the process. “I’m happy to travel all over Marlborough to meet with clients, and it’s not too late to get your fire installed for winter,” he says. Doug set up Marlborough Fire Installations two-and-a-half years ago as he was already working in that line of work. He also has a background working as a qualified builder which is a great asset to the business, particularly as Doug provides a chimney removal service. “I do quite a bit of EQC work removing and replacing chimneys. “Simply call me and I will do my best to find a solution to suit your needs,” he says.

Money saving tips Wet clothes: Dry your clothes outside, as drying them inside can cause damp and mould. Light bulbs: Change to energy efficient light bulbs. Each high-use bulb you replace can save you up to $20 a year. Un-flued gas heater: Unflued gas heaters can be bad for your health. Never use them in the bedroom. A cheap portable electric heater costs less to run and won’t make your house damp. Hood extractor: Use extractor fans to remove moisture. Draught stopper: Tighten hinges, catches and latches

Enjoy your winter with these money saving tips.

to stop heat loss. Use draught stoppers. Television: Turn off appliances at the wall to save money. Heat pump: Only have heat pumps and gas fires turned on when you’re home and using the room.

Shower: If your shower fills a 10 litre bucket in less than a minute, fit a shower flow restrictor to cut hot water costs significantly. Bathroom: Mould causes health issues. Remove any mould by spraying with white vinegar, let set, then wipe.

Better Air with SmartVent Home Ventilation Pellet fires are not only good for the environment, but they can be stylish in design and fit in with the decor.

Pros and cons of heating sources How you use a room will help you to decide the type of heater that’s most suitable. For larger rooms you want to heat regularly, like a living room, it’s worth paying a bit more upfront for a fixed heater with lower running costs and more heat output than an electric heater. This could be a modern wood or wood-pellet burner, an energy efficient heat pump, or a four-star flued gas heater. Electric heaters may be enough for smaller rooms and rooms you only heat occasionally, like bedrooms - they’re cheap to buy but more expensive to run. Heat pumps Benefits include: • Low running costs (when you use them properly) • Producing instant heat • Convenience - you can control the temperature with the thermostat and use the timer. • Be aware that: • They must be sized correctly - for the space and the climate - to work well (if you live in a colder area, ask the supplier to size the heat pump based on its low temperature performance) • Some are a lot more efficient than others - look for the Energy Rating Label (the more stars, the more energy efficient) Modern woodburners

Benefits include: • Low running costs, especially if you have access to free or cheap firewood • The environment - they produce very little pollution and use renewable wood energy • Heating large spaces • Heating hot water in winter through a wetback system. Be aware that: • Firewood must be dry to burn cleanly and efficiently, so you need to plan ahead and store it undercover, ideally for at least 12 months • There may be consents required for you to install one so contact the Marlborough District Council for more information. Wood pellet burners Benefits include: • Good for the environment - the pellets are made from waste products and burn cleanly • Heat control (better than a wood burner) • Heating large spaces • Heating hot water in winter through a wetback system. • Be aware that: • Unless you get an optional battery backup, they won’t work if your electricity isn’t working (they use a small amount of electricity) • You cannot burn firewood in a pellet burner

• You need a building consent to install one Flued gas (natural or LPG) heaters or fireplaces Benefits include: • Convenience - you can control the temperature with the thermostat and use the timer • Heating large spaces. Be aware that: • You will have to pay a fixed charge for reticulated gas supply (if you don’t already) • You must have your gas heater installed by a registered gas fitter.

Celebrate your grandparents, win them some great prizes.

Are your grandparents the unsung heroes of your family? Have they been ‘extraordinary’ in their love and support or perhaps they have done something for your family that is worthy of recognition? If so the Sun Newspaper would like to hear from you! Grandparents play such a vital role within a family and deserve to be celebrated. So let’s celebrate Marlborough’s most wonderful grandparents by nominating them for the Sun’s ‘Grandparents of the Year’ competition. Simply tell us why you think your grandparents should be nominated for this competition in no more than 200 words and send us a photograph.

You can do this by emailing celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz or by dropping the letter and photograph into the Sun office at 72 High Street, Blenheim. Nominations will be received for the month of May before a winning letter is selected. There are some amazing prizes for the ‘Grandparents of the Year’ and a selection of letters will be published early June.

Thinking pink By Megan Connolly Local Picton ladies Penny Dawson, Linda Grace and Anne Goodyer are doing their bit for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ by organising a Pink Ribbon Breakfast on May 27. The morning is set to start with doors opening 9.30am, with a buffet breakfast around 10.30 at Endeavour Park Pavilion in Picton. Linda Grace and Penny Dawson got involved with Pink Ribbon Breakfasts many years ago, usually catering the event through their company Quest Catering. But with the usual organiser of 13 years, Shirley Timms away, the ladies took it upon themselves for the last ‘couple of months’ to put their organiser hats on and sort prizes and guest speakers for the day. Some of the many prizes were donated by local artists. Featuring items like limited addition

handmade mugs by Sara Scott, artwork by Caroline della Porta and prints by Sue Syme. Some prizes have even been donated by big names like Rick Stein, the organisers say. The prizes can be seen in the window of First National in Picton who is one of the supporters of the event. Music will be provided by the Heather Jameson Duo with guest speakers Rachel McGuire, Chris Steadman and Jackie Halliday. “We want to put Picton on the map and on the leader board by raising the most money for the Breast Cancer Foundation,” Penny says. “Our goal for the day is to look good, feel good, and have fun,” Anne says. If you’d like to attend, get in quick! Limited spaces available so contact the Quest Catering team on 5737654.

Football scores new car with local firm By Bill McElhinney Simon Wakelin is a football fan. The new dealer principal at Mayfield Motors in Blenheim has been known to kick a ball around in the past, but now focuses on coaching. “I played football in Auckland, I was a left back,” Simon says. “But since my wife Amy and I moved to Blenheim I’ve concentrated on coaching. “I coach the eighth grade team and I’m the assistant coach for the eleventh grade.” Simon’s two sons, Oliver and Toby, are also football players. Mayfield Motors have been a sponsor for Marlborough Football for nearly four years, and on Friday Simon handed over a car to Marlborough

Football manager Andrea Smith-Scott. “We thought it was time she had an upgrade,” Simon says. “We are extremely grateful for generous sponsorship from a local business like this, who are supporting football in Marlborough,” Andrea says. “We have the largest number of people in sport in Marlborough, and our expenses are six times the amount of our income from the winter and summer football competitions, so we rely heavily on sponsorship, grants and user pay programmes to make up the difference to try and keep the cost down for our players. “To all of our football members in Marlborough – help support those businesses that Marlborough Football general manager Andrea Smith-Scott gets the keys to are supporting us!” a new car from Mayfield Motors dealer principal Simon Wakelin.

Cross country event at Pelorus T he Ma rlborough Harrier Club hosted the Nelson clubs for a cross country event at Pelorus on Saturday and it was very pleasing to see approximately 40 people turn up for this mini event, club publicity officer Les McKay says. “The event was held as a non-competitive event, but we all know when Marlborough and Nelson harrier club members harriers get together gather at Pelorus Bridge prior to the start of their there will always be this element of competitivecross country event on Saturday.

ness,” Les says. “Knowing this it was decided between Marlborough and Nelson we take the times of 1st, 5th, 9th, 13th and last from each side of the hill, add them up and it is the least total accumulated times that wins.” Marlborough came in with 5 hours 31 minutes 18 seconds, Nelson came in with 6 hours 4 minutes 20 seconds, making Marlborough

the winner. “It was a great run in pleasant conditions,” harrier David Bendell says. “I caught up with some of my harrier friends from Nelson/Waimea. “It was a tough run up to the trig and around a loop, albeit around seven kms, but I was still out for 1 hour 23 minutes. Good, solid run with a good catchup over afternoon tea.”

Contenders lead in table tennis The Contenders have hit the front of the local table tennis competition following a win on the count back against 3 of a Kind, after matches were drawn six-all. Jacqui Wood won two singles for The Contenders and featured in a high quality match with Marlborough closed champion Alex Kennedy. Bjorn Cowdrey was undefeated in doubles and picked up a singles win, while Malcolm Honour also got on the board. For 3 of a Kind, Alex

continued his unbeaten singles run. The left handed Marion Wood backed him up with two wins. Josh Sim led the Avengers to an 8-4 win over Tri-Mates. Josh has been in great touch this season with his entertaining brand of lobs from the back of the table. Zac Cowdrey attacked well for two wins while newcomer Steve Teague won a single and a double. Kylie Hurren picked up two wins, including a win over Zac. Warren Haszard won a single and a doubles

with Murray Stead. Predators beat Golden Oldies 10-2 but the match was much closer than the score suggests, with seven matches going past the third set. Jason Kennedy had three comfortable wins while Peter Welsh earned two wins, including a hardfought win over fill-in player David Smith. Ross Ward did well to beat Peter Wells in five close sets. Jeff Sawyer gained both points for Golden Oldies. Double MD beat Barbies Boys 8-4. Matt Willis

and Martin Stephens won two each with Dennis Burkhart just getting home against wife Barbara in the last singles of the night. Sam Flaherty won his three singles for Barbies Boys with Rob Honour beating Dennist in another close match. Points: The Contenders 23; Avengers 22; 3 of a Kind 21; Double MD 19; Unreturnables 17*; Predators 16*; Barbies Boys 15; Tri-Mates 13; Golden Oldies 10*. (* indicates that team has had the bye). The following players

will represent Marlborough at the South Island Championships in Timaru at Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Men: Nathan Watson, Josh Sim. Women: Jacqui Wood, Marion Wood. Boys under-18: Alex Kennedy, Bright Asiamah, Alec Dodson. Girls under-18: Hannah Smit, Stacey Williams. Boys under-13: Rory Osborne, Peyton Ritchie, Joseph Ruwhiu.
