Local firefighter wins at fire fighter challenge From page 1 At 328 metres the Sky Tower is the tallest building in the southern hemisphere. “It was like running in a wetsuit, it was quite a scene. They had people at the end to rip all the stuff off you and St Johns paramedics all the way up, Joseph says. “You just looked out and saw a sea of yellow firefighters which was

quite cool. “People enter from all walks of life and internationally.” Joseph says. Nearly 1000 firefighters from all over the world raced up the Sky Tower on May 19 wearing up to 25kg of kit, raising more than $1.25 million for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand. To train for the event Joseph tried to simulate what it would be like by

running the Monkey Bay stairs once or twice a week, doing a lot of rowing and running with the full kit on, plus a 20kg vest that added more weight than was required. “It was nice because we had the Monkey Bay stairs close by,” Joseph says. Joseph joined the Rarangi Rural Fire Force last year to meet new people and learn new skills on top of

his job as a beekeeper and enjoying surf lifesaving. The Rarangi Rural Fire Force entered the event for the first time last year and won two trophies and a gold medal. “It wasn’t as bad as I thought. I could have done it again, I think I was just high off the adrenaline. “I’d like to shave a minute off for next year,” Joseph laughs.

TWICE WEEKLY

By Megan Connolly Despite relocating from Palmerston North, Joseph Lepper’s connection with Marlborough started long before he moved here in 2011. Joseph’s grandfather, Rod McKenzie, has a long history with beekeeping in Marlborough and was the one who taught Joseph everything he knows about the trade. “I remember going out as a wee tacker. It was surreal really. Not quite something everyone gets to experience. “I just fell in love,” Joseph says. When Rod stepped down after being a beekeeper in Marlborough for 30 years, Joseph took over the business and has around 250 hives throughout Marlborough. “You get to see the countryside. It’s quite a unique way to farm. It’s a lot smaller but bigger numbers. “You get to have a real

intimacy with the bees,” Joseph says. If he had to say what his favourite part of the job would be “it would be hard to narrow it down”. “It’s everything really and probably telling people about it,” he says. Joseph learnt pretty quickly that he wasn’t allergic to a bee sting which was lucky, he says. “One under the nose definitely gives a tickle,” he laughs. But what does firefighting, beekeeping and surf lifesaving have in common? They’re all summer activities! “Maybe that’s the secret to my success—the running around in the bee suit in the hot summer is what really trained me for the stairs,” he says. Joseph is off to Asia next week on holiday, escaping the winter hibernation of New Zealand. “Firefighting and beekeeping is a good lifeBeekeeper Joseph Lepper with his personal hives where he runs a small bee rehabilitation centre. style.”

Green light for new bridge Marlborough District Council Deputy Mayor Terry Sloan has welcomed the news that the new Opaoa bridge has got the green light to go ahead. “Finally we have a reason to celebrate, with the added bonus that the old heritage bridge will be enjoyed by pedestrians and cyclists.”

Blenheim water remains safe Marlborough District Council is pleased test results show there is no PFAS in Blenheim’s town water supply bores. Council’s Operations and Maintenance Engineer Stephen Rooney says all the town’s nine supply bores were tested for PFAS all came back clear. “We anticipate monthly sampling for the next 12 months to monitor this issue.”

Budget Service Marlborough financial advisors Michelle Coburn, Tan Paddison and co-ordinator Denise Best.

‘We need your help’ By Celeste Alexander A local organisation that provides financial advisers free of charge to the community may be forced to close its doors for good if funding cannot be found. Budget Service Marlborough has been operating for over 30 years and has always received government funding up until 18 months ago, and since then it’s been a struggle, staff say. Co-ordinator Denise Best says the service, which operates five days a week, has explored every option to cut costs, but so far it’s not looking good. “When we lost our funding we were determined to carry on for our clients, and we have managed to by cutting back where we can, but we are at the point of desperation now. “We thought of closing one day a week, but that’s going to disadvantage our clients who rely on us. There’s at least one person who comes to us each

day,” she says. The service is open Monday to Friday from 10am-3pm, employs three part-time trained financial advisers and is run by a volunteer committee.

Budget Services Marlborough are hoping to find funds to prevent the organisation from closing. Each of the advisers have cut their hours to help the situation but according to Denise, if they don’t find funding soon Budget Service Marlborough “won’t see the end of the year”. “We have been applying for funding where we can but we are one of many local organisations applying. “Time is of the essence. “It’s hard to accept that as trained financial advisors we

would be chasing funding. “So if there is anyone out there in the community who can help... a corporate perhaps, then please get in touch. We really need your help,” Denise says. Asked how much funding they need to keep the doors open, Denise estimates around $50,000 per year as the “bare bones”. “We will keep on applying for funding as much as we can, but if we don’t have the absolute essentials paid for then we can’t operate,” she says. While Budget Services Marlborough is one of two services in Blenheim that offers free confidential, non-judgmental budgeting advice to the community, adviser Michelle Coburn says clients like to have a choice of where to go. “If we can be here to offer a choice then that’s beneficial to all. There’s room for two budget services in Marlborough.”

One client who wished to remain anonymous for privacy reasons says Budget Services Marlborough was “the light at the end of the tunnel” for her. “When I had my first appointment with Michelle I was at a very low point. “I was drowing in debt and didn’t know where to turn or what to do. “I was terrified and very emotional at the beginning but Michelle was great and put me at ease. She guided me to take control of my finances, helping me to make phone calls I had been too scared to make alone. “I’m proud to say it’s been one year since that first appointment and I’m back on my feet and doing well. “If it wasn’t for Budget Services Marlborough I don’t know where I’d be now,” she says. To contact Denise phone 578 2006 or email budget@mfbs. org.nz.

Journey leads to Harold By Megan Connolly Genevieve MacDonald is regularly recognised by local children. If your child is between the ages of six and 13 then they’ve probably had the pleasure of visiting the Life Education Trust trailer with Genevieve and Harold the Giraffe where she has been working for seven years. Harold has been in Marlborough for 12 years, educating children to embrace positive choices for a healthy mind and body. Genevieve’s teaching journey started long before Harold. She began her teaching career in

1982 after being faced with a choice of nurse, teacher or receptionist. It almost seemed like a no brainer. But after some time as a regular classroom teacher, she was in need of a breather. Genevieve went to work at a dentist for three years but sooner rather than later Genevieve was “ready to get back into it, pining to be teaching and with children”. “I was pleased to come back because I do really like it. It does feel like my place. “I love kids. They’re so motivating and inspirational and you get so

much back,” Genevieve says. Even 12 and 13 year olds are still into it. “When I go to the supermarket and have 13 year olds be bothered to say ‘Hi’, that’s a real highlight,” Genevieve says. “I think Life Ed can make a difference in children’s and families lives. That’s why I get a kick out of hearing that either teachers have followed up the learning in their classrooms or the kids are using the info outside of the Life Ed experience,” Genevieve says.

By Megan Connolly Kalita Cresswell has always loved animals; her passion for their welfare driving her to create a completely cruelty-free and organic hair salon, Two Small Rooms Organic Hair Studio, and to become the volunteer coordinator for Antivivisection in Blenheim. “Well I’ve always been a bit of a chemical-phobe,” Kalita Cresswell laughs. So when did she begin her cruelty-free journey? “It’s really started when I had kids. I was wary of what I was putting on their skin especially as one of them has sensitive skin,” she says. Kalita has been hairdressing for over 20 years, starting when she was 19 years of age. “It never really dawned on me that products we use were tested on animals. I just never thought of it,” Kalita says. When she started her salon two years ago she was already consciously cruelty-free but it wasn’t until she took the leap to organic products did she realise that she could offer it

as an alternative. Her passion continues through her work for the Antivivisection Society who advocates for non-animal based research in New Zealand and promotes non-animal research methods. As the volunteer coordinator Kalita organises events and helps bring new volunteers onto the scene. This year she’s organising a Triathlon for November where Antivivisection will raise awareness and money to protest the purpose built animal testing lab in Otago. “I just want to offer another alternative. “The whole purpose is really about spreading awareness because many people are unaware of the effect testing has on animals,” she says. Kalita has a beautiful old Staffy dog called Rudi who is almost 14 years old, has two cats and in the past fostered dogs, piglets and little goats. “They used to sleep in what’s now my salon actually,” Kalita laughs.

Zena Denton Claimed the main prize in April’s Sport Tasman Explorer competition by sending in photos such as this action shot, from various parts of the region.

Get outdoors, take a pic, win a prize! By Peter Jones, Sport Tasman Getting out and about in the Top of the South has always had its benefits – fresh air, stunning scenery and warm water greeting those who choose to spread their wings. Now, thanks to Sport Tasman, there are more tangible rewards on offer for those who walk, cycle or swim in the region. The Sport Tasman Explorer is a new innovation which encourages people to get active in the great outdoors. Participants accumulate points by visiting various places in the top of the south, then posting a photo of their activity on Instagram, accompanied by the hashtag #SportTasmanExplorer. Several places to visit in Nelson-Tasma n, Buller,

Marlborough and Kaikoura are suggested on the Sport Tasman website, but hardy explorers can tag any location and points will be awarded. And of course, points mean prizes. At the end of each month prizes will be handed out in a variety of categories, plus spot prizes. The competition kicked off in April with some notable efforts. Top of the photo ops was Zena Denton aged 14 years old from Nayland College who got particularly active in the region throughout the month and uploaded 14 entries. Her efforts earned her a Ski Rainbow Anytime Pass for the coming ski season which she chose to give to her father as thanks for his fantastic photography skills.

Other entries included Kaikoura Kayaks getting active with a group of youngsters, and holiday maker Alex Glover from Auckland enjoying the sights of Abel Tasman. Organiser Katie Arden, events manager for Sport Tasman says local businesses have hopped on board through the provision of prizes and regular discounts for explorer participants. “Our Sport Tasman Explorer has attracted lots of support,” Katie says. The Explorer is a “call to action for everyone to get active and instagramming,” Katie says. She suggests there will be more surprises in store, including Sport Tasman Explorer packs for youth participants.

The price of craft beers

Farmers - now is the time UK supermarket chain Tescos are now responding to a petition signed by over

Dear Ed, Myself and a friend visiting New Zealand from America went to a newly opened craft beer establishment in Blenheim recently, whilst there my friend commented on the cost of our tapped beers, two beers in approx. 400ml glasses $24, which he felt was quite expensive. We both then agreed that the craft beer business seems to be a very lucrative one to be involved in, saying that a few days later we visited another craft beer establishment

Julia Jones, KPMG Farm Enterprise specialist, takes the same positive attitude as the President of Federated Farmers - this is an opportunity for our farmers to target the top end of the market - people prepared to pay for naturally produced and environmentally sustainable products - grass fed animals, allowed to run free. Two tapped craft beers in decent sized glasses from a good choice of beers $18, also the locals informed us they received loyalty cards which gave them a free beer after every ninth beer purchased. This takes the cost of each beer to $8, guess which value for money establishment we will be returning to before my friend returns to the US. VFM. Blenheim

How much clearance is required? Under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003, trees must be kept a safe distance from power lines for public safety and to protect electricity supply. The Regulations define the clearance requirements using two zones, the Notice Zone and Growth Limit Zone. The Growth Limit Zone is the space around the power line where trees must not encroach at any time. The Notice Zone is one metre beyond the Growth Limit Zone. The distance required for each Zone is dependent on the line voltage, as shown in the table below: Growth Limit and Notice Zones for Line Spans less than 150 metres OVERHEAD LINE VOLTAGE

Bras and brass All ladies brass band to debut in Blenheim In 2006 Margaret Betts and her friend Jane Nichols decided that there should be an “all ladies” brass band in the UK and went about making it happen. They decided there needed to be a good cause for getting the ladies together and so they decided on a charity – The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Great Britain. To-date their UK band has raised over 220,000 pounds for Breast Cancer Research. New Zealand has now established a band called Bra’s and Brass, an all-women band made up of 38 female players from

all over New Zealand, with the endorsement of the United Kingdom organisation. The band assembled for the very first time in Wellington last month for a weekend rehearsal and preparation for performing a concert at the 2018 National Brass Band Championship Gala Concert in Blenheim on July 15. This would be the band’s very first ‘official’ engagement. The proceeds from the concerts go to the Breast Cancer Foundation of New Zealand. Bras and Brass therefore is a not-for-profit group of musicians raising money for charity.

Project convenor Ross Ayson says the club was approached by the school to coordinate the planting. “Two weeks ago we had 25 Soloman Islanders and five of our members work on leveling the bare garden area, then we picked up the 225 plants to put in today,” he says. Students shine on stage Over recent months children from across Marlborough schools have been preparing a performance to acknowledge community support and to celebrate the impact Kiwi Can has had on their respective schools. “Kiwi Can Jam, a celebration of five years of Kiwi Can in Marlborough”, took place last night at the ASB Theatre. Kiwi Can is an energy-packed primary school programme, aimed at children aged five to 12 years. It teaches values such as integrity and respect, and delivers fun-filled learning to schools all around the country. The Graeme Dingle Foundation Marlborough, a local charitable trust which runs Kiwi Can locally, are 99.5% locally funded. In Marlborough Kiwi Can has grown from 350 kids every week (in four schools) in 2014, to 2,200 kids every week (in 12 schools) in 2018. This year over 50% of Marlborough’s primary-age kids are receiving Kiwi Can lessons every week. Ward School’s performance was based on the value of resilience with choreography by older student Ashlee Hickman.

Omaka Victory Dance double pass up for grabs By Megan Connolly Omaka Victory Dance tickets are running out so get in quick to be a part of this event which takes place on Sunday, June 3 at 7pm. Better yet, email the Sun Newspaper with your name and contact details before 5pm on Thursday for your chance to win a double pass. The evening is an opportunity to get dressed up in your best 1940’s inspired outfit, dance the night away to The Beat Girls 1940s era music, and raise money to restore the old garrison buildings built in the Second World War.

The tickets are $65 per person and include light finger food for supper. One of the organisers, Allan Udy says, “The buildings that we’re trying to preserve and restore were used by the local Air Training Corps cadet unit (27 Sqn ATC) for just over 30 years from 1976 until 2006. “While these buildings are of heritage significance because they were built during the Second World War, they’re also significant to the many hundreds of locals who used these buildings while they were part of the cadet unit,” Allan says.

There will also be a working bee on Sunday from 10am to 3pm where anyone interested can come and check out the old garrison building on Aerodrome Road, opposite the Sounds Air hanger. “We’d love it if folks would join us for an Open Day on Sunday the 3rd, and then later for the Victory Dance that evening,” Allan says. Get in quick! Email news@ blenheimsun.co.nz for your chance to win a double pass to the Omaka victory Dance by 5pm Thursday.

Ploughing champs just days away Who will be crowned the champions of the 2018 Marlborough Ploughing Association’s qualifying event this weekend? Will it be one of our locals? Only days remain until we find out and you, the public, are invited to watch all of the action. The event kicks off on Saturday with a practice coaching day for those competing, then Sunday will be the official competition day. It’s being held on a property owned by Phillip Neal, located on Giffords Road which is off Rapaura Road. Phillip has generously given the use of his land, around eight

hectares, that will be used by around 20 entrants who will take to the land with their tractors and even Clydesdales to plough their way up the leader board. Who ever wins in their respective classes will qualify for the New Zealand Ploughing Championships for 2019. There they will go up against the best in the country and the winners of the national event then qualify for the prestigious World Ploughing Championship. One thing that organisers are excited about is the involvement of two world champions, Marlborough Ploughing Association president Allan Gifford says.

“We have some real world class people working with contestants on Saturday as part of the coaching process which is fantastic. “They will also serve as judges for Sunday‘s competition. “We have Allan Wallace, a former world champ who coached local man Roger Jordan to a second placing at the past worlds championship. “We will be able to share some valuable advice and experience,” Allan says. There won’t be a lot of “interesting action” for the public to watch on Saturday, Allan says, but Sunday will be the best day for viewing.

“If you come between 10am3pm you will be able to watch the ploughing in full action, as well as the stunning display of Clydesdale horses that are also going to be ploughing. “There will be some refreshments available on Sunday, parking available and a gate donation on entry. “Come on out, soak up some sunshine and country air and enjoy the variety of ploughs, witnessing them in action from the way they used to be with Clydesdale horses, through to the very modern setups,” he says.

MARLBOROUGH MARLBOROUGH

2016 2016 - 2018 -

The qualifying process

Local man Ian Woolley has won the national ploughing championship’s conventional class five years in a row. If he qualifies at the Marlborough event he will go on to the 2019 nationals.

Ian hopes to qualify for sixth consecutive national final One local man who has excelled on the ploughing circuit a number of years is Spring Creek grape grower Ian Woolley. Ian will be competing in the Silver Plough Conventional class with his John Deere 5720 tractor and Kverneland plough, in the hope of once again winning and going on to the NZ Ploughing Championship next year.

Ian is the only person to have won five back-to-back NZ championships and has represented NZ three times already in Denmark, England and Kenya, and will be competing in Germany this year and in the US next year. If he does qualify for the 2019 NZ Ploughing Competition, and wins that as well, then

he will be heading to Russia. “This will be another unique opportunity for the public to see Ian, our own champion, in action,” Allan Gifford says. “He will be looking to qualify on his home patch and people will be able to see his new high-tech gear.”

Over 20 qualifying events are hosted by individual ploughing associations throughout New Zealand. The Marlborough branch is hosting its event this weekend over two days. The winners of the championship classes then go on to compete at the annual New Zealand Ploughing Championships next year at Rakaia. These classes are as follows: - Silver Plough Conventional. For the first time in years this class will also include Reversible, a highly specialized class. - Vintage Qualifying - Open Class Vintage If local competitors win at the nationals in the national Silver Plough Conventional and the Reversible classes, they will qualify to represent NZ at the world contest which is held in one of the 30 countries that are affiliated to the World Ploughing Association.

Proud to support Marlborough Ploughing

Who will win the crown? Of the 20 contestants who have confirmed their participation, there are some coming from Canterbury, the Waikato and here in Marlborough. Local names to watch out for are Ian Woolley, Ash Murdoch, Linda Cosgrove and Daniel Owen to name a few. Ash Murdoch who, in his 80’s, has been ploughing for many years and competes in the vintage class. On the other end of the scale, there’s Daniel Owen who is in his early 20s and has done well for himself since he first began. Daniel started out with the help of the Jordan family, who provide him with a tractor and plough, and mentor him along the way, Allan Gifford says. “It’s encouraging to see young blood coming through and he seems to really enjoy

himself. Maybe he could inspire more young people to try ploughing for themselves,” he says. Another achiever is local woman Linda Cosgrove who is the only female vintage class plougher taking part this year, and the only female from Marlborough to qualify for the national championship. “Linda has been ploughing for around six years and has also qualified for the national championships “Ploughing can be enjoyed by anyone,” Allan says. A new addition to this year’s line up will be the Inter-Industry Ploughing Competition. Local companies Drummond&Etheridge, Tractor Repairs and Spares and Norwoods will enjoy some friendly rivalry and test their ploughing skills with their machinery.

These companies will also have displays of their machinery, including Renwick based company Agrivit. Last but not least, the biggest draw card of the event is returning to Marlborough - the Erewhon Clydesdale horses. “Colin Drummond of Erewhon Station will be bringing his Clydesdales again this year which is truly magnificent to watch,” Allan says. “I highly recommend the public come along and watch these beautiful animals at work.”

Clothes swap with a twist By Megan Connolly Everyone is already buzzing about She Shops being back for another year where women can get clothing, accessories and a pampering for next to nothing, and all for a good cause. “It’s a clothes swap with a twist,”She Connects team member Emma Barnett says. The event will be held on Saturday June 9 from 2pm to 4pm at the Nativity Centre. The afternoon is $2 entry with every item selling for $1 with pampering stations and refreshments. She Connects is a combined church project run by a group of ladies where they organise and partner with a local charity. This year all proceeds made from the day will be going to the local charity Pink Packets, with all funds going back into sanitary items and education for young women. “We want to raise money for charities in

Marlborough. Libby Barnes says, a trustee of She Connects. “It’s so much more than clothes. Its confidence and self-esteem,” Pink Packets founder Milinda Higgins says. Libby is asking for clothing and accessory donations to be dropped off between June 5 and 7 at the Nativity office from 9am-4pm. “It needs to be in good condition please,” Libby says. “The numbers of women who are satisfied and excited when they enter are just wowed because they also have the opportunity to be pampered for free, “There are people that can’t afford clothes but they go out with bags chockablock full,” Milinda says. It’s a great opportunity to offer those in the community that need it, Libby says.

Local firm scoops major award The team at Scott Construction Marlborough is celebrating it’s latest industry award, for major work completed at five-star hotel Chateau Marlborough. Earlier this month, a gala awards dinner was held at the Convention Centre at Skycity in Auckland, for the NZ Registered Master Builders 2018 Commercial Project Awards. Scott Construction Marlborough were elated to receive a Silver Award for the project, recognising the level of excellence achieved - far above industry standards. Scott Construction Marlborough Managing Director John Tovey says the whole team is incredibly proud of the award, “Building on the Gold Award won in 2017 for the Pinot Noir Cellar at Cloudy Bay Vineyards, this really cements our reputation for delivering excellent quality and value to our clients”. The Chateau Marlborough project consisted of two separate stages. Stage A commenced in January 2016 and consisted of a

of schedule. Our team rose to the challenge, worked extended hours and had it completed in time for the hotel to be fully operational in time for the start of the coach tour season. “Building a project of this scale within this timeframe is very rare in Marlborough. Speed Skating weekend

Waitohi First Five Tim O’Malley finds open ground.

The Blenheim Roller Skating Club is hosting a huge event this weekend, a speed skating competition that will run from Saturday through to Monday. The public will be able to go along and watch on Saturday morning at the Blenheim rink, Athletic park after lunch, Sunday all day at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 and then on Monday at the Marlborough Kart track.

Renwick’s number 9 Chris Bolton reaching for the try line.

Rugby final looms By Matt MacDougall, Blenheim RDO The 2018 MRSU Division One season draws to an early close this season, after just one round of the local competition resulted in Renwick winning a redemption match against East Coast 25-7. The second semi being an absolute arm wrestle for the first 65 minutes between Moutere and Waitohi. The later coming out on top 26-17. The stand out performer for Renwick this season has been star

midfield Mike Vaeno. His powerful running has seen him consistently break the opposition line, and with this ability to read the game has seen him nab a couple of crucial long-range intercepts to dot down when his side was on the ropes. Renwick have also acquired the services of handy Irish 9/10 Brian Bennett, who has directed play superbly for them this season from both playmaker positions. Up front they have the engine room to provide the front foot ball in original Mako, Ti’I Paulo,

consistent performer and captain Sam White at lock and another unsung hero in this pack has been the hard working, grafter Josh Holdaway who has got through a power of work consistently this season. Waitohi have a well-balanced side with threats all over the park. Ray Nuia has been outstanding at Hooker, the former North Harbour rep has ranged wide with his dynamic running but muscled up in close when needed resulting in several tries this season. Mako 1st Five Tim O’Malley

Kart racing Saturday

will be crucial for the Tohis, his ability to drive his team around with his educated boot and wide pass will be crucial. Add in powerhouse ball carrying No8 Taimi Fangatua, hardworking lose forward Tane CraggLove, and the elusive Fetuli Paea at fullback, the black and yellows have threats from 1-15. The final will be played on Saturday, June 2 on Lansdowne Park No1 at 3pm. There will be a $5 entry fee for fundraising for Marlborough JAB.

The 2018 Sunbelt Series is taking place this weekend. This two day event is run between Kartsport Marlborough and Kartsport Nelson. Day one kicks off at 8am on Saturday at the Blenheim track, before kart drivers head over the hill to Nelson for day two. Points will be combined from both days to find a winner for the championship. Drivers from all over the New Zealand will be attending this event which makes for tough and great racing. The public are welcome to go along and watch.
