By Bill McElhinney Christine Mackenzie loves animals, and has a soft spot for cats. The Picton veterinarian has three cats that were formerly strays, a dog, and regularly treats other people’s pets. But it’s the cats that are released into the wild that have her concerned. “About 10 years ago I took over the clinic and I started asking if anything was being done about stray cats and cats that were breeding in the wild,” Christine says. Continued on page 2 Picton vet Christine Mackenzie with Rambo and assistants Shanti Mosdell and Candice Hydes.

TWICE WEEKLY

Picton vet doing her bit to help strays Continued from page 1 “No one seemed to be taking any responsibility for cats released into the wild that were breeding. “People don’t realise how easily cats breed. A female can have three to five kittens in the summer and be ready to breed again by next spring. A female cat is ready to breed from six months.” About five years ago Christine organised a programme with the SPCA where stray cats were caught, de-sexed and released. “It did seem to make a difference to the number of strays around,” Christine says. Now, with local fundraising and help from the Marlborough District Council, Christine has re-introduced the trap, neuter release programme, which is aimed at reducing the stray cat

population. “We want the public to help by bringing in strays,” Christine says, “and there are conditions. “People who bring a cat in must have known the animal for more than seven days and must be sure it is a wild cat and not owned by someone. “They pay $20 towards the de-sexing and must agree to care for the cat during its 24-hour recovery from the operation.” The cats are given a health check, and if found to be suffering from a chronic illness, they are euthanized. Healthy strays are desexed, micro chipped and the tip of the left ear is removed as a way of identifying that the animal has been desexed. Any stitches used are dissolving. “It normally costs $150 to spey a female cat and $85 to

neuter a tom,” Christine says. “But the funding we have been able to access and some generous donations from individuals have allowed us to run this programme. “It would also be nice if people could help us with homeless cats via donations, fostering cats or contacting us when looking to adopt a cat,” Christine says. Christine currently has a cat that was brought in as a stray but probably wasn’t, and now needs a home. “We’ve called him Sylvester Stallone, but he gets Rambo for short,” Christine says. “He’s just over a year old and we’d love to have someone offer him a home. “He’s taken a real liking to our scratching post, so we’d be prepared to let it go with him for a bargain price!”

Sylvester Stallone, aka Rambo, needs a home.

Midwinter Swim this Sunday Swimming in the sea during winter isn’t what most would plan for their weekend, but it’s something that’s become a bit of a tradition in Picton with the annual More FM Mid Winter Swim. Held in conjuction with Cuddon Air-Conditioning, the Mid Winter Swim is being held this Sunday at the Picton Foreshore. Families and individuals are warmly invited to attend the free fun event which kicks off at 1pm sharp. In the lead up to the chilly dip, there will be winter themed games on the grass. There’s heaps of spot prizes including the big one thanks to Cuddon Air-Conditioning. Just for taking part in the swim someone will win an incredible Toshiba heat pump with eco friendly technology. Thanks to the Marlborough Kaikoura Rural Fire Authority and Brancott Estate, there will be hot ‘showers’ after the swim. Rarangi Surf Life Saving Club will be on hand to keep an eye on everyone and Picton School will have hot food available for purchase.

A special day for community constable By Bill McElhinney Blenheim community constable Russell Smith says it was an honour to receive his New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) from Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy. “It’s a very formal ceremony,” Russell says, “and it was a very special time. “I’m still blown away by this. Being nominated for the award was a complete surprise.” “We are so proud of

our chairperson Russell and all he does for the Marlborough community,” Marlborough Youth Trust manager Jo Lane says. Russell is the chairperson of the trust and has a passion for youth development and youth initiatives. “He’s so approachable and has a great sense of humour,” Jo says, “and he works hard to get the best for young people in Marlborough.” “When you love what

Dave finds Blenheim Oasis By Bill McElhinney It’s been quite a journey for Dave Maharey, cousin of former Labour Party MP and cabinet minister Steve Maharey. Dave has gone from helping manage the myriad of Canterbury’s braided rivers to pastoring a church in Blenheim. Dave and his wife Laura have taken over as the pastor couple at the Blenheim Oasis Family Church. Ross and Diane Banbury, who have led Oasis for the past eight years, have moved to Te Puke, where Ross is taking up the position as senior pastor at the local Baptist church. Dave, originally from Nelson, spent seven years with Environment Canterbury working on rivers management. He met Laura, who comes from London, at a friend’s wedding in Christchurch and the couple eventually married. “Things got stressful after the Canterbury earthquakes,” Dave says. “And rents were so high, too,” Laura says. So they decided to take some time out and set off for a six-month trip around the world. They returned to New Zealand in 2013 with no jobs and no specific destination in mind. “I didn’t want to go back to Christchurch,”

Laura says. “And I didn’t want to go back to Nelson,” Dave says. So the couple came to Blenheim. Within a week Laura had a job coaching swimming at the stadium and Dave landed a job on a friend’s farm. The couple also joined the Oasis church. “It was then I began studying for the ministry,” Dave says. “I really felt I wanted to do something more with my life, to help people, to make their lives better.” Dave studied for two years then began working for the church three days a week while continuing his farm work the other two days. When Ross and Diane decided to move, Dave and Laura embraced the opportunity to carry on their work. “We’re a contemporary church,” Dave says. “We embrace people from all walks of life, from families with youngsters to seniors. Our motto is: ‘Come as you are and let’s grow together.’” An important arm of the church is the Marlborough Community Development Trust, a not-for-profit Christian-based trust. Managed by Trish Holdaway, the trust works

with schools, youth groups, parent groups and organisations like Hospice Marlborough. “The aim is to build a better community by using the strengths and resources of the people who live in it,” Dave says.

Dedicated group supports parents By Celeste Alexander National Volunteer Week (17-23 June) is a chance for Plunket to celebrate the thousands of volunteers across the country, and the different ways they give their time to support families with young children. There is some amazing work done by all of the volunteer run Plunket groups throughout Marlborough, including that of the Renwick Plunket Group. What’s special about this group is that it’s run by women, most of who have been together for around seven years. Heidi Owers, Wendy Adams, Phillippa Charles, Megan Kirk, Anita Ireland, Nicki Stace (life member), and Jennifer Potts share a common passion - to help others. “All of the members of this group are using or have used the Plunket service in the past and now have children that are at primary school, college or married with their own children,” Jennifer says.

“Our group runs a playgroup out of the Renwick Playcentre building on Havelock street. “We are all very proud of how many people we have helped directly and indirectly,” she says. The group is particularly proud of a project they’ve nurtured called ‘snugas-a-bug’. “We make affordable merino blankets to sell. This helps us run our playgroup and be part of projects that share our passion. “We have been able to gift a number of baby blankets to the Plunket clinic as well as being our fourth year connecting with the neonate ward at Wairau Hospital to offer every baby a blanket. In the last 12 months 80 blankets went to families. “We supply other healthcare providers and community organisations with smaller pepi pod sized blankets and our regular sized blankets” she says.

By Bill McElhinney Young American visitor to Blenheim, Lydia Pehlert, is enjoying Marlborough’s cooler climate. “It’s 36C back in Pennsylvania,” Lydia says. “It was sweltering when I left so this cool weather is a nice change.” Lydia, 22, is staying with Blenheim couple Rae and David Garnham. She met David two years ago when she was in New Zealand on a study tour. She came to Blenheim and visited the Omaka Aviation Heritage Museum, where David was a volunteer guide. “We got talking and discovered we had a common interest- music!” Lydia says. “We stayed in touch and now I’ve come back during a break between university courses.” Lydia plays the cello, and David is an organist at St Andrews Pres-

byterian Church. “My Dad started teaching me piano when I was young and then I started on the violin, but I developed bad tendonitis and couldn’t continue,” Lydia says. “But my music teacher suggested I try the cello, and I fell in love with it!” Lydia plays in the University of Pennsylvania orchestra, and during her time in Blenheim has been rehearsing with the Marlborough Civic Orchestra. The orchestra will stage four free 45-minute concerts for schools and community groups on June 26 at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim. The programme will include music from The Greatest Showman, Star Wars, Thunderbirds and Flight of the Bumble Bee. Geology, and particularly earthquakes, is Lydia’s other main interest. She is studying geology and

geology information systems, and will do a masters degree when she returns to university. She has been particularly interested in the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake and is visiting geological sites during her month-long stay here. Back at university, Lydia and some colleagues are working on developing a computer programme which she hopes will make scientific data on earthquakes more accessible and understandable to the general public. “We’ve done a great deal of research on earthquakes and we’ve accumulated a lot of data, but we’ve done a bad job of presenting this to the public in a way that would be helpful to them,” Lydia says. “We want to develop an interactive, on-line programme, and we’ll be using data from the Kaikoura quakes and the more recent ones in Hawaii to help achieve this.”

Roads, water focus for council spending By Bill McElhinney Water, wastewater, stormwater and roading will be a major focus of Marlborough District Council spending in the coming years. Councillors considered 305 written submissions and heard 30 hours of verbal presentations from over 100 members of the community as they worked through the Long Term Plan 10-year budget priorities. Once final funding calculations are confirmed over the next few days, the proposed rate increase for the coming year will be reduced by over 0.5 per cent to approximately 4.3 per cent. This is expected to be ratified at a

council meeting on June 28, when rates for next year are levied. “I’d like to thank everyone who made a submission or came and spoke to us in person,” Mayor John Leggett says. “It was a very broad range of the best of Marlborough – some great ideas, some innovative thinking and also plenty of realism from people who clearly understand we do not have enough money to help everyone.” “There was strong public support for the projects the council proposed in its consultation document,” John says. Councillors have agreed to significant investment in core infrastruc-

ture, particularly water, wastewater, stormwater and roading. Other projects to be funded include a survey of the Pelorus Sound seabed; further environmental science and monitoring; regional pest management and relocation and expansion of the hazardous waste centre. Councillors also agreed to invest in the Marlborough Kaikoura Trail and the Link Pathway. The old CRT building on the corner of Kinross and Redwood Streets, which is owned by the council and currently unused, has been earmarked for a youth centre. Council will contribute $400,000 from council reserves and will

provide the building rent free to the Marlborough Youth Trust. The review of the Geographic Rating Areas’ cost allocations was a contentious issue but councillors confirmed their view that the previous methods were inequitable from a district-wide perspective and had to be tackled. Rates remissions to Picton Vicinity ratepayers for rates increase above 40 per cent for a period of three years were agreed to. Council staff are working through the detail on decisions relating to requests for funding from community groups and other Mayor John Leggett: “We do not organisations. These will be made have enough money to help everyavailable as soon as possible. one.”

By Megan Connolly Students from Marlborough Boys’ College were excited to swap two of their older bikes for new ones from the men at Blenheim Menz Shed on Monday for a discounted price. The boys, special needs students with a range of disabilities, go out every Monday for a ride around town as a way to exercise and keep moving. “If the weather is good they often ride on our basketball courts and then we have regular bike rides through and around town with four of them,” college learning assistant Lukas Caha says. “It’s good for their fitness and gets them out into the fresh air, away from boring classes, and they can also see what’s going

on in town,” Lukas says. Chairman of Blenheim Menz Shed, Gordon Hill says the bikes are well checked over before they are passed on. An assortment of bikes arrive at the Blenheim Menz Shed from a variety of different sources. Some come from junkyards; others are given to them when they’re just old, Gordon says. Menz Shed volunteers strip the bikes down and restore them so they can be ridden safely. “It’s very good!” Year 13 student Jack Boyce, says “It’s really a life skill for them to have,” Lukas says. “I’m also building a bike shed out of pallets with the boys helping me, so we need some bikes to fill it up!”

Dear Ed, It was great reading about the new bridge that Blenheim will be getting. However, it was also disappointing to see that the name of the bridge was repeatedly quoted as being the ‘Opawa bridge’. In 2015, as part of the Treaty of Waitangi settlement, the river (and hence the bridge) had its name changed to Opaoa. Indeed, the bridge currently has a sign with the correct spelling. Of course it doesn’t help that the NZ

Transport Agency also mis-names the bridge and river, but we have no excuse as we live in Blenheim and should use the correct names. Incidentally, here at Marlborough Boys’ College one of the oldest Houses in the school was called Opawa. This has changed in 2017 and we are proud to have House Opaoa in its place. Dr Eliot Attridge Director of e-Learning Head of Faculty - Science Marlborough Boys’ College

Dear Ed. No doubt the doom-mongers will say the wet weather is due to global warming. But heavy rains and floods have happened since time began. Remember Noah’s Ark? In 1938, a historic flood left parts of Napier, Clive and Hastings a metre under water. Worst hit was the Esk Valley, where the river rose 10 metres. The Clutha had a giant flood in 1878. Twenty-five gold miners lost their lives as flash floods raged along the Shotover River. A major flood occurred in 1923 in Marlborough when 3.24 inches of rain fell in 24 hours. The flood peaked at around 5pm, with the whole of the business area covered in about four feet of water. Extreme weather events, they’ve always been here. Don Coyote Marlborough

Pair help ease burden for grieving families By Bill McElhinney Rummaging through a deceased person’s belongings is a challenge few like to face, so Blenheim women Jenny Andrews and Pauline Mead can tackle the task for you. The long-time friends have become experts at sorting, selling and donating the things that are left behind when someone dies. They can also make things easier for people who have to move out of a family home and down-size to a smaller property. They call themselves Estate Busters, and will help someone to reduce their household possessions before moving into a rest home, or they can clear an estate after someone dies if family members don’t have time or the ability to do it themselves. Their services are often sought because a parent has died and the children are living overseas and don’t have time to sort everything in the short time they come home. Families in a hurry can be tempted to just pick out the treasures then pile everything else in a skip and send it to the landfill, Jenny says. She and Pauline believe most people would prefer a loved one’s treasures weren’t thrown away. The venture began after both experienced family bereavements, with all the ensuing dispersal hassles, and then also helped clear the estate of a friend who had died, so they decided to turn it into a part-time business. “The house was to be part of the estate and needed to be sold for the beneficiaries, so it had to be emptied and all items disposed of,” Jenny says. After treasures were identified and removed by the family, she and Pauline organised a garage sale and profits from that were added to the estate. Other goods were taken to a Blenheim charity. Once they go to a property, Jenny and Pauline look at what can be sold, donated,

recycled or has to be disposed of. “Perhaps family members have treasures they can’t take in a suitcase, so we can organise for those to be packaged and shipped off,” Jenny says. “Or things can be sold on Trade Me or to local second-hand shops.” Some unwanted items might have value at the museum, or can be used by other community organisations. Various local charity organisations are often recipients, Jenny says. There are also unexpected finds. “We cleaned out a linen cupboard once and found a pistol,” Pauline says. “It was a World War II relic and had to be disposed of through the proper channels.” “In another place we were going through toiletry items and found a valuable diamond ring wrapped in tissue and hidden in a jar of cold cream,” Jenny says. “Older people often start to hoard things and if they’re lonely, they tend to collect heaps of junkmail and pamphlets from organisations like Magnamail, etc.” Before a contract is made with Estate Busters, Pauline and Jenny can meet potential clients in “neutral territory”, or at the property concerned. The work to be done is identified and options discussed. A document listing the legal terms and conditions the pair will follow is presented and people will be given an estimate of how much the service might cost. Fees are based on an hourly rate, Jenny says, and hours worked depend on what needs to be done. If required, the pair can clean the interior and tidy gardens to prepare the property for sale or for new tenants. “Life experience, local knowledge and contacts is our main strength,” says Jenny. “And we aren’t emotionally involved, which makes it much easier on everybody involved,” Pauline says.

Beaver Rd intersection change As part of the Eltham-Beaver Road cycle link project, intersection priorities have changed along Beaver Road, at Alfred Street, Munro Street and Dillon Street. The change means road users travelling along Beaver Road now have right of way at these intersections. The Marlborough District Council is asking drivers to take extra care when travelling through the intersections following the change. ‘Change of road layout’ signage will be in place. The Eltham/Beaver Road Cycle Link

Project is a 1.5 km route aims to improve the north-south walking and cycling route between the Taylor River and southern neighbourhoods. Council says the cycle link will offer a safer cycle route for the more than 500 students that attend Whitney Street School, Bohally Intermediate and Marlborough Girls’ College. It is hoped it will also encourage more people to cycle to the Taylor River Reserve Path to reach the town centre and other destinations in the area.

Rick shines on international stage It was a close run for the finish, but Australia managed to pip New Zealand in the end to win the Mr Gay World for 2018. By Celeste Alexander Blenheim’s own Rick Devine-White represented NZ at the event that was held late last month in Knysna, South Africa. While he lost out to Australia’s Jordan Bruno, a close friend of Ricks, he was still crowned the first prince having scooped several wins during the finals evening. Rick, a personal trainer, won the sports challenge, best written test and best swimwear. Thrilled with his efforts and with the whole experience, Rick thanked everyone who supported him. “To the world, to my family, to my sponsors and supporters and to my friends... thank you. Thank you for every inch of time, vote, message, thought and intention. This journey could not have happened without you. I am so humbled by our NZ community. For you, I threw everything down on the table and can walk away from the competition knowing I gave it my all. “Being named first runner up is such an honour and privilege. The memories from this journey will last with me forever. “To my Australian brother Jordan; you inspire me, you have the most incredible inner beauty and I can’t wait to support you through your year of reign. “To the other delegates; I have no words to describe how much I love you all. What you stand for is everything Mr Gay World is about. Continue to be role models, continue to fight for us, and keep pushing the boundaries of acceptance. “To the judges; rather than being ‘judged’ it felt more like being supported and guided. Constantly challenging us to be better and always adding strength to the leaders that we are,” he says.

Rick also thanked his husband Arthur for his ongoing love and support. “To my husband; there was a moment on stage where I looked down at you during the show and you were crying. “Regardless of the win or not, together we have made this possible and as a team we will always stand proud for equality and diversity. “Thank you for pushing me outside my comfort zone and reminding me that I am capable. We are all able to do great things, it just easier with a side kick.” Rick will continue on with his role as Mr Gay NZ, advocating to bridge the current gap between LGBTQI and what is perceived as normal. “The fight for equality has been an important part of our history and now the movement forward is to educate people about including ‘gay into every day’,” he says. Rick has also been the face for the NZAF Ending HIV campaign. He has many other accolades to his name including national titles within the fitness industry, and he runs his personal training and life coaching business full time.

Search and Rescue - is it your calling? In Marlborough when someone is lost, missing or injured there’s a specialised team available to assist Police with search and rescue (SAR) operations. The LandSAR Marlborough group is completely voluntary

run by dedicated individuals from diverse backgrounds. At any moment they can be called out for SAR operations in response to a range of circumstances from rare occasions when trips into the back country don’t go

Julie Freeman - Customer service for Liquid Action Volunteer Role: Incident management team and membership officer “I’ve been involved for five years. I knew as I got older and my children grew I wanted to volunteer my time to a service, so when I got with my husband he was part of SAR and it inspired me to join. “I’m not fit enough to go climbing hills with the field team so I joined the IMT team. When the call comes in from Police I send a text for the teams to get together and we all go to the police station. We do radio call testing, set taskings and gather as much intel as we can to support the teams throughout the search. Our people are amazing so if you want to be part of something really rewarding, join us,” she says. Shaun Crabb - Frame and truss supervisor at Blenheim ITM Volunteer role: Training officer and field team member “In 2013 I met a SAR volunteer at an A&P Show and decided to go get involved. I already had an outdoors practical background so I found the training course very informative and enlightening. “SAR teams can be called out in all weather, particularly to find and recover people where helicopters cannot go. Tramping, map reading and compass skills are good base skills to have and we are always looking for members who provide very important support to those out in the field. It’s a hugely rewarding role and I encourage people to make contact if they are interested,” Shaun says.

as planned, through to frantic emergency calls from family members whose loved ones have disappeared from their home. If you or someone you know are interested in joining LandSAR, visit www.landsar.org.nz where

Julia Eason - Environmental planner for Ngati Kuia Volunteer Role: Local group chairperson and field team member “I joined SAR four years ago after deciding to settle in Blenheim. I saw it as a great way to meet people it was something I was wanting to learn more about. “Running the group in itself is great life experience and being out on a search is truly rewarding, especially when the reward is the outcome. I’ve always been keen on the outdoors and had worked as a tour guide in Fiordland before university. “Now I work inside so SAR is a good excuse to get outdoors. The group is very much looking for more women to join... some of our volunteers are even stay at home mums,” Julia says. Lew Bright - Retired Volunteer Role: Driver and support “When I was a young man I worked at the Picton freezing works before SAR got going and the police used to run it. There was a group of us at the works with back country knowledge so we would be called upon and put on a boat or vehicle and sent out on a search. “I’m retired now so I usually turn out for the Alzheimer’s team and as a driver to take out the field teams. I deliver them to the areas they are searching then make sure I am there to pick them up with some treats and refreshments. “I also share my knowledge of back country places and I know a lot of farmers. If there’s advice I can give to someone thinking of joining, I’d say just get in and do it,” he says.

SUPPORTING OUR PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY

Peter Hamill - Team Leader, Land and Water at Marlborough District Council Volunteer role: One of the team leaders of the field team “I’ve been involved for around six years. I thought I’d go along to see if I could offer anything. I wanted to give back to the community in some way, and because I’d been involved with orienteering, could read maps and was relatively fit, I felt this was a good opportunity for me. I began working in the Incident Management Team (IMT) then went through the training, skilled up on techniques and attended call-outs before becoming a team leader. It’s a challenge, it’s fun and exciting and it’s doing good for the community.” Peter says.

Better Air with SmartVent Home Ventilation

2018

Energy efficient is best Install eco-friendly bulbs. These bulbs can last for many years and they use 80 per cent less power than standard light bulbs. An energy efficient showerhead can use up to 50 per cent less hot water than a standard one. Consider installing one yourself, or ask your landlord if one can be fitted. Check the seals on your fridge to make sure they are still working. If they stop working or become less effec-

YOUR TRUSTED LOCAL GLASS COMPANY TALK TO US ABOUT RETRO-FIT AND NEW DOUBLE OR TRIPLE GLAZING

There’s double glazing. And then there’s double glazing with Viridian’s premium Planitherm® XN glass. It’s a low-e glass with an invisible coating that reflects heat back into the room rather than letting it escape outside. Planitherm® XN reduces heat loss by up to 59% compared to ordinary double glazing, so you’ll feel cosier and warmer on the coldest winter night.

tive, warm air will enter your fridge, making it work harder and use more power. To test your seals, put a piece of paper in the door and close it. If the paper can be easily pulled out, you may need to have the seals replaced. Do the same with your oven, as it could be losing precious heat energy whenever you cook. Double glazing on windows is an effective way of controlling heat loss and condensation, but can be very costly.

A cheaper alternative is to buy a window insulator kit, which involves fitting plastic film to the inside of wooden windows. This can be done easily, and will make your windows 90 per cent more energy efficient. If you are replacing an appliance, try to ensure the replacement appliance is as energy efficient as possible. The higher initial cost will benefit you in the long run through savings made to your power bills.

Keep your family warm and healthy this winter.

Why is it important to keep my home warm and dry? It’s important for your family’s health that your house is warm and dry. Cold and damp homes are linked to poor health, especially for babies and small children, people who are ill, and older people. Here are some ways to keep your home healthy that won’t break the bank: How to heat your house Heat the room that you are in. Try and keep the temperature between 18 and 21 degrees especially if you have babies, people with illnesses, or older people living in your home. Dress warmly for bed and make sure your

bedroom is warm enough - it is very important to stay warm during the night. Block up unused chimneys and stop draughts around doors and windows. You can make your own draught ‘snakes’ by stuffing rugby socks or pantyhose with newspaper or cushion filling. Up to 20% of heating can be lost through draughts. Open windows and curtains on sunny days, and close them when the sun goes down to trap heat in your home. Trim any trees that prevent sun entering your house (but if you are renting, remember to ask your landlord first!).

Cuddon Ltd’s Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Marlborough, are your heating and cooling specialists

So don’t think twice. Choose Viridian’s Planitherm® XN glass for your retrofit or new double and triple glazed windows.

Something for Everyone Decide what you want from your fridge before opening the door, to save on electricity costs.

Ten easy ways to save money and cut your electricity costs Talk to your electricity company about which plan is best for you. Most companies provide options including direct debits at a flat rate all year round, pre-payment meters and low use rates for people who are very frugal. Most of your electricity bill will go on hot water so use less if you can. 1. Set your washing machine on a cold wash and rinse your dishes in cold water. 2. Take short showers instead of baths. Showers use 60 per cent less water than baths. 3. Fix dripping taps. A dripping hot tap can cost $80 a year but a washer to fix it costs less than $1! 4. If your hot water cylinder is old, keep the heat in by using a hot water cylinder wrap. These are available

from hardware stores. Make sure the thermostat is set to produce a temperature of 55oC at the tap (this will also prevent scalds). 5. Always turn the lights off in rooms when you leave them. But if you are using energy efficient light bulbs it is better to leave them on if you are returning within ten minutes. 6. Appliances that have a standby function (such as TVs, stereos, mobile chargers, computers or microwaves) should be turned off at the wall. This can save you up to $75 a year. 7. Clothes dryers can be very expensive to run so try not to use them unless you really have to. Heated towel rails are also expensive and cost around $120 a year to run.

8. Make sure there is generous air space behind the back of your fridge and try to locate it out of direct sunlight, or in a cooler room like the laundry. Don’t open the fridge door too often or leave it open. 9. Make sure you cool food before putting it in the fridge. Turn off your second or ‘drinks’ fridge - this could be costing you $190 per year. 10. When cooking keep the oven door closed. Always keep lids on pots and use as little water as possible to cook foods. Simmer rather than boil food and if possible use a microwave, as this uses 30-40 per cent less power than a conventional oven. Defrost food naturally if possible, (in the fridge is best) rather than in the microwave.

Brrrrr.....! It’s cold! GEt your curtains NoW!

Two wins for Marlborough in Tasman Trophy rugby clashes Two Marlborough sides came out on top following a weekend of close encounters in the Tasman Trophy rugby matches at the weekend. Marlborough sides appear to be bridging the gap, but their ability to close games out cost them, with the biggest upset being Waitohi going down 26-24 to bottom of the table Wanderers at Brightwater. The Tohis had a tough day, often beaten at the breakdown, which has been a strength for them this season. They managed to score with five minutes of play to go, first five Tim O’Malley charging over following a five metre scrum. Waitohi regained possession and began to build phases as they trailed by two, but a blindside play was barrelled into touch calling an end to the match. Renwick carried on their top form, comfortably putting away Kahurangi 40-26. Kahurangi were first to score, and played with some attractive width, but Renwick’s backs were too strong. Ula Moala had his best game of the season, breaking the line almost every carry and distributing well, resulting in the home side running in six tries.

Central’s away win over Waimea Old Boys on their club day would have to be the talking point of the weekend. The Blues fired their first shot of the season the weekend before, but proved they want to finish the season strong when they came away with the 31-27 victory. Prop Peter Vakaloa was a wrecking ball both on attack and defence, producing several strong carries and dominant tackles. Waimea smothered Fijian centre Tavatanvananvai, but all this did was distract them from in-form second five Nigel Satherley, who had a fine game. Fullback Rawiri Tamati was 100 per cent with the boot and had a fine game from the back. At Spring Creek, Moutere showed in patches they are capable of tipping any side, but lapses in concentration allowed hard running Nelson number eight Isiah Miller to run amuck, bagging himself a hat trick. Mike Curry was the pick of the Moutere forwards, being dominant at the breakdown and producing several line breaks. Halfback Ben Finau was a constant threat from the base and spent the match trying to spark his side into gear.
