By Bill McElhinney These cats are kids, and they’re planning to have a ton of fun in the coming school holidays. Popular cushion theatre features Cats Continued from page 1 “We have 70 youngsters involved, some of who will be taking turns at the daily performances,” Duncan says. “It’s been a big challenge, as they’ve had to learn the songs as well as all the drama and movement, but we’re delighted with the way it has come together.”
The full orchestral music comes courtesy of professional backing tracks brought in from Australia. The splendid costumes come mostly from previous productions of Cats which Duncan has produced in other centres. Blenheim Musical Theatre staff is helping with the spectacular lighting. “There are 80 lighting cues in a
one-and-a-half hour production, so there’s a lot involved,” Duncan says. “But it’s a really colourful show – it looks spectacular.” The Marlborough Childrens and Youth Theatre have been staging the popular cushion theatre productions for the past 24 years and have developed a formula that entertains all ages.
“The youngsters that come to the show aren’t constrained by being in a formal theatre,” Duncan says. “They can get up and move around if they want. And there will be plenty of audience participation as well!” Cats runs from July 9 to July 12 with performances at 10.30am and 1.30pm. There is also a special family performance on July 11 at 6.30pm.

TWICE WEEKLY
By Bill McElhinney The Marlborough Childrens and Youth Theatre has brought make believe to life for thousands of people over the years. Tutors Duncan Whiting, Debbie Cox, Alison Dight and Sheryl Whiting are bringing the wonderful music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and the poems of T.S. Elliot together for the latest production, Cats. “The show has been adapted for kids,” Duncan says. “You’ll get to meet Skimbleshanks, the railway cat, Gus, the theatre cat, Mungojerrie and Rumpleteaser, the mischievous cats, with Rum Tum Tugger, the cat with attitude, and a host of fun Jellicle cats with the famous song, Memory, sung by Grizebella, the once most beautiful cat of them all.” The aim of the theatre is to help young people from four to 14 years of age develop confidence, self esteem, conversational ability and social skills, Duncan says. “Speech, verbal dynamics, creative movement, mime, structured and free improvisation, memory skills – all these help youngsters grow,” Duncan says. “And when adults come to the theatre with a child they laugh together, imagine together and make memories that can last a lifetime.” The principal cast rehearsing for their school holiday production of Cats for Marlborough Childrens and Youth Theatre.

Black Fern’s love for rugby began in Blenheim
By Celeste Alexander Blenheim was where it all began for number 28 Black Fern, Neroli Matautia (nee Knight). Neroli was honoured recently alongside 45 other Black Ferns at Eden Park on June 8 during the NZRFU capping ceremony. The ceremony officially recognised all Black Ferns who have played in sanctioned test matches. “It was an honour to be officially recognised by the rugby union,” Neroli says. During the capping she was proudly watched by her mother, Neroli Edwards who lives in Blenheim. “It was great having mum there because she used to come away with the team as a travelling supporter, so it was also a special moment for her seeing the girls from that team.” Neroli’s first big break was in 1990 as a 15-year-old which gave her the opportunity to go to the World Cup in Cardiff, Wales at age 16. “I was playing for the Stokes Valley Rugby Club women’s team which went to a tournament in Christchurch, then I ended up playing internationally,” she says. “I’d always played half back in my younger years but played full back in the women’s teams,” she says. Neroli then changed positions back to half back and first five eight so she wasn’t in a team for a few years. It wasn’t until 1999 that she got back into the Black Ferns through to 2001. She played overseas, including for the Canada Cup before finishing her rugby career and moved to Auckland where she married her husband Benhur and had two sons. Now living in Waihi, Neroli is
passing her skills down to the next generation by coaching the Waihi Under 8 junior rugby team. Asked where her passion for rugby began, she laughs and says; “At the age of seven after being called on field to substitute in my brother’s junior team!” “My brother Jaden played for the Redwoodtown Rugby Club, which was one of two clubs that became Harlequins and I was watching on the sidelines one day when the team was short a player. They put me on at half back and I ended up running through the team and scoring the winning try. “That’s where it all started, in my hometown of Blenheim, as the only girl player,” she laughs.
Overnight on Sunday a portable chiller was broken into at Waterlea Racecourse in Blenheim. A large quantity of alcohol including cases of wine, boxes of beer and boxes of RTD’s were stolen. The thieves used a wheelbarrow from the site to transport the alcohol away through Pollard Park. The wheelbarrow is distinctive with a large ‘WP’ on the sides. Please contact the Blenheim Police by phoning 5785279 or by phoning Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you can help with information.

All major DIY stores have agreed to stop selling ionisation smoke alarms following a request from Consumer NZ. A recent Consumer NZ test of smoke alarms found ionisation-type smoke alarms performed so poorly that the watchdog called for retailers to pull them from their shelves. The organisation is pleased to report all stores contacted about their ionisation alarms agreed to stop selling them. Consumer testing confirmed ionisation models were great at detecting flaming fires, but not so good with visible smoke.

Rarangi artist Karen Neal won the People’s Choice Award for the Peters Doig Marlborough Art Awards with her entry ‘The Net Mender’.
Fisherman inspires a win By Celeste Alexander Rarangi artist Karen Neal has been voted the ‘People’s Choice’ award winner for the recent Peters Doig Marlborough Art Awards. Karen had two artworks in the finals, one being a pastel portrait of her son and the other a scratchboard of a Portugese fisherman titled ‘The Net Mender’. It was the fisherman that was voted People’s Choice. “I’m humbled to think people singled out my artwork from a room full of amazing artworks from artists all over New Zea-
land,” she says. ‘The Net Mender’ was inspired by a trip Karen went on to Portugal earlier in the year. “He was just sitting mending his net. He seemed a wise old fellow and had so much character in his face, I couldn’t help take photos of him,” she says. Scratchboard artwork is drawn subtractively with abrasive tools such as scalpel blades, tattoo needles and a fibreglass brush, by scratching/ etching off black ink to reveal white kaolin clay underneath.

New school opens at Omaka Marae The three Kurahaupo iwi of Te Tauihu —Ngati Apa ki te Ra To, Ngati Kuia and Rangitane o Wairau—have welcomed the official opening of Te Pa Wananga, Marlborough’s first bilingual kaupapa Maori school. The kura (school), a two-classroom satellite unit of Renwick School based at Omaka Marae in Blenheim, was officially opened during a dawn ceremony on Friday. The opening was attended by about 250 people, including representatives from iwi throughout the South Island. “This is a significant and historic day,” Ngati Apa ki te Ra To Trust chairman Brendon Wilson said. “This is a vision that has long been held, and it’s a credit to the tenacity of Kiley Nepia and his family that we are standing here today. “Finally, our tamariki can be educated within a Maori context. “This is something we could have
only dreamed about when my generation were children.” Te Pa Wananga is part of Omaka Marae’s strategic vision, to develop a centre of cultural excellence. Marae general manager Kiley Nepia and his wife Donna have championed the establishment of a school at the marae since 2013. The project moved forward in late 2015 after the marae secured funding from Te Putahitanga o Te Waipounamu to develop the Pa Wananga concept further. After continuing talks with the Ministry of Education, the marae invited Renwick School to partner with the satellite unit until Te Pa Wananga could establish itself as a standalone school, and in June 2017 the ministry announced funding for the new two-classroom unit. Chair of Ngati Kuia, Waihaere Mason, said Te Pa Wananga played

an important role in terms of cultural identity and whakapapa. “This is about whakapapa. “You can’t have a culture without a language and you can’t have a language without culture. Te Runanga a Rangitane o Wairau Chairperson Wendy Hynes said the partnership between Omaka Marae and Renwick School was to be celebrated. “Together they are able to offer the best of both educational worlds. Rangitane congratulates those who have made this a reality, in particular Kiley Nepia, whose passion and perseverance for the revitalisation of Maori culture and language in Marlborough is second to none.” Twenty students are currently enrolled at the school, with classes due to start in Term 4.

Rapaura School senior pupil Will Struthers and the school’s youngest pupil, Finn Morrison, cut the ribbon at the opening of the new classroom on Friday.
Schools celebrate Matariki, Rapaura opens classroom By Bill McElhinney Schools around Marlborough have been celebrating Matariki, the Maori new year. Matariki is the Maori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter and for many Maori, it heralds the start of a new year. Pleiades can be seen most of the year, apart from April and June, when it is behind the sun. Traditionally, Matariki was a time for remembering the dead and celebrating new life. In the 21st century, observing Matariki has become popular again.
Matariki literally means the ‘eyes of god’ (mata ariki) or ‘little eyes’ (mata riki). According to myth, when Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatuanuku, the earth mother, were separated by their children, the god of the winds, Tawhirimatea, became so angry that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens. Matariki is an increasingly important celebration for New Zealanders, with 19 per cent of us marking it last year – up from 8 per cent three years ago. But a survey conducted by Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington in late 2017 also
found that while 69 per cent of Kiwis were aware of Matariki, many still did not understand its significance. Rapaura School held a Matariki celebration last Thursday with a special cooked breakfast for pupils and parents and the opening of a new junior classroom. Principal Michelle Spencer and school board chairman Ben McLauchlan spoke, and thanked the staff and pupils for their patience during the construction period. The bright, new learning space was then opened for those attending to explore.

Go the grans! Dear Ed, What an amazing group of grandparents we have in our midst! The Sun feature was a lovely reminder of just what a valuable contribution these often unsung heroes make in

NZ or Aotearoa? Dear Ed, I’ve developed a locational coordinate crisis of late and sought a head shrink. The reason is, where do I live? In New Zealand or some mystical land called Aotearoa? My head shrink set me straight. She told me the word ‘Aotearoa’ is the Waitaha name for the South Island, given in honour of one of their canoes. Waitaha’s name for the North Island is Whai Repo. They never had a name for all of New Zealand.
Aotearoa was never a Polynesian name, never applied to the entire country and certainly doesn’t translate to ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’ in any language. The whole thing is myth from start to finish, she told me. Now I’m really confused when I hear Radio NZ and TV presenters saying we’re on Planet Aotearoa. Even some local wineries do the same. Dear Ed I’m sure everyone will agree that our Marlborough roads are slowly deteriorating. Repairs are simply not being completed, and roading is being left to get worse. I have noted a deterioration since the new council took over. One has to have a mental list of pot holes when going from A to B in order to avoid them these days. I’m sure almost everyone does this, but should we as ratepayers have to?
Some rough roading just can’t be avoided. I’m talking about the Southern approach to the Opaoa Bridge, and the Northern exit of the Ferry Bridge, Spring Creek, as examples. Not so long ago, we had a roading gang attending to minor repairs on a daily basis. They now seem to have vanished. Maybe a fiscally prudent council, could take the $488,539 budget for the new Pollard Park entrance and repair some roading instead.
Infrastructure has priority, I would have thought. Blenheim Ratepayer Blenheim The Marlborough District Council replies: For any roading issues please call Marlborough Roads on (03) 520 8330, so your issue can be tracked and addressed. Marlborough has 1526 km of formed roads, 886km of which are sealed and 640km are unsealed.
Delusions of Grandeur Dear Ed, I just could not believe the spiel which King Salmon boss Grant Rosewarne poured out to the Marlborough District Council’s long term plan. He must have been dreaming to imagine the salmon industry could be as big as the dairying or wine industries by 2050, that the environ-
mental impact is negligible and that NZ’s trade deficit could be erased by expanding salmon farm numbers. This from a man of a company which made a $25 million profit yet wants a grant of public money to clean up the sea bed sludge caused by farms. What was that about environmental sustainability Grant?

No beavers in Blenheim Dear Ed, A giant beaver on the Wither Hills? I don’t think so! There were never any beavers in Blenheim, despite its often damp past, and despite what many people believe, Blenheim has never been called Beavertown. There are far more important things to emphasise about Blenheim’s history than a name mistakenly attached to the town more than 100 years ago. Marlborough District coun-

Power stalwart steps down John Cuddon has stepped down after 38 years of involvement in the electric power industry. He talks to Bill McElhinney about his time with the Marlborough Electric Power Board and the Marlborough Electric Power Trust. Few people have had as close an association with industry in Marlborough as John Cuddon. He spent half a century working for his family’s Blenheim engineering firm, Cuddon Ltd, which has designed and built a wide range of equipment for Marlborough and New Zealand businesses. One of the company’s innovations, commercial freeze dryers, are used in a wide range of industries and sold around the world. An interest in the electric power industry led to John joining what was then the Marlborough Electric Power Board in 1980. The board was involved in both power generation and reticulation, having built and operated the Waihopai Dam and later the Branch River hydro project. The board also strung hundreds of kilometres of power lines around the province, including coverage to remote parts of the Marlborough Sounds. “It was a big job,” John says, “especially getting power to remote areas like Arapawa Island.” The Marlborough Electric Power Board became Marlborough Electric in 1992, before government reforms in 1998 forced all electricity
companies to split into either the lines business or supply business. Marlborough Electric’s generation and retail businesses were sold to TrustPower and from 1999 the company became Marlborough Lines, which now focuses on the operation and maintenance of the province’s lines network.
“Marlborough Lines Ltd is a very successful business and I’m proud to have been part of its development and success,” John says. Marlborough Lines is owned by the Marlborough Electric Power Trust, which holds the shares in the company on behalf of the current and future electricity users in Marlborough. John became chairman of the interim trust in 1990 and continued as a trustee after the power board became a company, becoming chairman of the board of trustees in 1993. “Marlborough Lines Ltd is a very successful business and I’m proud to have been part of its development and success,”
John says. John was one of six elected trustees, three of who are elected on a two-yearly rotational basis. “The trustees don’t have any direct involvement in the operation of Marlborough Lines,” John says. “The trustees appoint the directors, make sure the company is run profitably and distribute the dividends.” In 2015 Marlborough Lines paid $89 million for an 80 per cent share of Yealands Wine Group, a move that sparked some controversy in the community. However, John is adamant it was a good investment which has led to increased dividends for Marlborough Lines customers. “The trust had money to invest,” John says, “and we wouldn’t have earned much by putting it in the bank. “The Yealands purchase was thoroughly researched by the trustees and we were unanimous in supporting the deal.” John still maintains his interest in Cuddon Ltd, the company he grew up with. He is a director of the company and he and his wife, Robyn, maintain their majority shareholding. John started with his uncle, Gorton Cuddon’s company,
John Cuddon’s engineering knowledge has been an asset for the Marlborough Electric Power Trust.
WGG Cuddon, in 1960 as an apprentice fitter and turner. His father, John senior, also worked there as the refrigeration manager. During his four-year apprenticeship John covered all aspects of mechanical engineering. In 1966 he became a salesman before moving on to manage the firm’s Kaikoura branch for four years from 1974. In 1978 he returned to Blenheim and was the firm’s sales engineer. Nine years later he was appointed managing director, a position he occupied until he stood down in 2006.
John maintains an interest in many community groups. He is chairman of the Selmes Road Garden Trust, and is involved with the Hospital Equipment Trust and the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre Trust. John will remain active with his other interests, including golf and tennis. “And there’s also the garden,” he says. “I’ve still got a lot of grass to mow!” Marlborough Electric Power Trust chairman, Ian Martella, says the trust has benefitted from John’s wide knowledge of the industry. “John is a real gentleman and his departure will be a

Good news for ski bunnies: Rainbow set to open soon By Peter Jones, Sport Tasman Plans are afoot to turn the Rainbow Ski Area into the “best small ski field in the country”. A quiet revolution has begun at the Nelson Lakes-based snow sports amenity, which has been in operation since the early 1980s. After years of being administered solely by a very-able volunteer committee, the newlook Rainbow Sports Club has a fresh approach, led by a newly-appointed fulltime general manager and new-look operations team. “ [The club] a re going through a massive change,” said Lesley McIntosh, Sport Tasman manager community sport (Nelson) who has been assisting them with some of their transition. “Rainbow has been run by a management committee for the last decade and they have done an amazing job. I don’t think people understand how much work and passion that committee has put in to have Rainbow open every season.
“But they have decided to take a step back and go into a governance board environment and employ a general manager.” That person is 58-year-old James Lazor, a former alpine director for Snow Sports NZ, who joined the Rainbow set-up in mid-February. James, who immigrated to New Zealand nearly 12 years ago, has also directed ski operations in Ontario, Canada and Vermont, USA. He has some far-reaching plans for the ski field, but is keen on a softly-softly approach during his first season at the helm. “We will be patient this winter, get a feel for it “There has been some fantastic support in the region, between the Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough areas … and a lot of passion from the people that have been involved as well as the members of the club and the public. “We just want to be able to respect and work with all of them to create whatever the next level is.” A nd rew Sm ith, acting
chairman of the Rainbow Sports Club, says the club has several strategic goals, including becoming the top winter attraction in the Nelson-Marlborough region.” James describes his first impressions of the ski area as “breath-taking”. “It’s amazing how gorgeous it is up there … it’s unbelievable. In our industry we are semi-dependent on the weather … but with the terrain up there the field’s potential is enormous.” Andrew agrees. “Rainbow is used for school groups, various ski and novelty races, family fun days, toboggan hire and by those who just enjoy walking in the snow. “It is really a recreational environment as well as for those keen snow sports enthusiasts.” The skifield, is expected to open for business on July 7. It looks likely that the season could reach October, given the recent weather, James says. “We’re set to open on the seventh. But we’re weather dependent so it all depends on what happens in the next few weeks.”
Rainbow Ski Area general manager James Lazor describes the view from atop the field as ‘breathtaking’.

Harold helps kids learn to care By Bill McElhinney Life Education Trust educator Genevieve McDonald and Trust mascot Harold the giraffe have been at Blenheim School recently helping children to learn
about caring for the environment. Life Education is a charitable trust that delivers a health programme to children in preschool, primary and intermediate schools.
“We build self-esteem and teach children the marvel of the human body so they can make informed decisions and lead a healthy life,” Genevieve says. “Another part of that is
learning to care for our environment, and Harold has been there to encourage the children in their learning.” Last week Harold and Genevieve called at the school with Trust deputy chairman
Brian Dawson and Roofline Marlborough branch manager Paul O’Regan. Roofline Marlborough is a Life Education sponsor. “Roofline staff have families and we want to
be involved with the local community,” Paul says. “Helping children is investing in the future and we’re very happy to be part of that.”

Generous donation from Lions Club By Megan Connolly It was all smiles as members from Blenheim Lions Club as project organiser Geoff Brown and president Kevin Wilkey presented the Cancer Council with a cheque of $4500 raised via a raffle earlier in the year. Lorraine Walker from the Cancer Council says the generous donation will go towards the general funds to support their free service to cancer patients in Marlborough.
The Blenheim Lions Club raffle hosted some excellent prizes with a canoe from Marlborough Fibre Glass Products at Riverlands, a hamper from PAK’nSAVE and firewood done by the club itself, thanks to the organisation of Tania Silcock and the project committee. “The funds raised was really a club-wide effort,” Kevin says.

Casual chess open to all By Megan Connolly Every Sunday morning from 10am to 1pm at Joocy Loocy Café, a small group of chess enthusiasts gather to work on their skills in some friendly, light-hearted games. The group moved into Joocy Loocy around eight months ago and the age and ability of the players is varied. Mike Dutton, Trevor Emmett, and friend Rod Gray organised the group as a way to work on practising their chess skills as well as socialise. “It’s a good sport for people who don’t really like physical sports,” Mike says. “It’s just like any sport, you
have to train, and if you play a lot you get good at it.” Mike began playing chess so he could teach his son and then he could play with his Granddad. Mike would read chess books and pass on the knowledge in them to his son. “Now he beats me!” It’s a game based on skill and outsmarting an opponent and men, women and children are all in the same category. Everyone is equal in chess. A young player, Vincent Gray, says his favourite part is “probably playing older people.” “It really doesn’t matter if you lose,” Mike says.
Chess players put on their game faces on Sunday at Joocy Loocy Cafe. Left side from front Vincent Gray, Tyler Lang and Trevor Emmett. Right side: Mike Dutton, Jacob Kerr and Jacob Boreham Wright.

Bride of the Year Tickets are still available for the show of the year In just two days 15 beautiful brides will be making their way on stage to show off their gorgeous wedding gowns as part of the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show, this Friday night. This year’s show will be raising money for two local charities, Child Cancer Foundation Marlborough and the Marlborough Group – Riding for the Disabled. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised over the years, through ticket sales, silent auctions and raffles. “We have been donated some absolutely amazing items for this year’s show and we are so grateful to Marlborough businesses for their ongoing, generous support. Without you we simply could not do this, so thank you very much,” the committee says. The show is being held on Friday evening at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim and there’s still time to get your tickets. Tickets cost $48 each which includes a glass of juice or bubbles and nibbles on arrival, and these can be purchased from the ASB Theatre or online at www.ticketek.co.nz The doors open at 6pm, nibbles come out at 6.30pm and the show starts at 7.30pm. There will be a cocktail hour between 6.30pm – 7.30pm where people can browse
through the many great trade stalls in the foyer area, bid on silent auctions, purchase raffle tickets and enjoy the live music by local band DoubleShot. At show time, everyone will be ushered to their seats while wedding music plays then MC’s Rick Devine-White and Tanya Smith host the show. There is an exciting lineup of show features throughout the evening, taking you through a ‘wedding journey’. There will be the Molta Bella Fashion show, a showcase of designer costumes from the World of Wearable Arts, a parade of wedding capes made by Cloak’N Mirror and of course a wedding dance performed on stage. These will all compliment the lovely brides who will come out in groups, then individually with their wedding music and photos playing in the background, then again as a large group at the end. At half time people are invited back out to the foyer to enjoy some wedding cake, place any last minute silent auction bids and again enjoy some live music, before the show recommences and runs through to the grand finale. Who will be the winning ‘Bride of the Year’? Make sure you purchase your tickets so you can find out on the night.

Amazing prizes for winning brides
The hardworking Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year committee, (back ) Tricia Dawson, Maureen Wright, Sue Murdoch (front) Coleen Bush and Noeline Stewart. This year’s Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year is celebrating its 16th show. Each year two local charities are chosen to benefit from money raised from the show and this
year it will be the Child Cancer Foundation Marlborough and the Marlborough Group - Riding for the Disabled. To support this fantastic cause, make sure you get your friends and family together, purchase your tickets for $48 each and enjoy a fantastic line up of entertainment. There will also be silent auctions and raffles on the night.
W ho a re the show judges and what are the prizes? While we can’t reveal who the judges are until after the show, we can however give an insight into the incredible prizes that will be won. There’s an important judging process that occurs in the afternoon leading up to the show’s opening where the judges speak to each bride individually and look at every detail including gown, hair, makeup, jewellery and shoes. Each bride is marked points in a variety of categories and it’s not until later during the show that the final points are allocated. The prize categories are: • First, Second, Third. • Mrs Personality - voted
on by the brides • Mrs Photogenic - judged by the Sun Newspaper • Best bridal shoes • Lucky Bride - one bride drawn at random There are incredible prizes that have been put together for the winning brides thanks to the generosity of Marlborough businesses. Bernadette Thomas has also very generously continued her support for the event by donating a cash prize for the Lucky Bride draw. The Sun Newspaper has provided a stunning ‘Ellani Collections’ necklace (pictured) for the winner of Mrs Photogenic, and Cresswells Shoes has donated a voucher for the winner of Best Bridal Shoes. “We have also been so

lucky to have been donated beautiful jewellery, gift baskets, beauty products, restaurant and winery vouchers, homewares plus so much more,” the committee says. There are also a selection of spot prizes that can be won by ticket holders.
All you need to do is take note of your seat number on your ticket/invitation and spot prize winners will be drawn at random. “Don’t forget to purchase your tickets... this is one show you don’t want to miss!”

A huge crowd gathered in support for More FM Mid Winter Swim on Sunday at the Picton foreshore with 193 people registred to take a dip in the water. The winner of the Cuddon Air-Conditioning heatpump was 17-year-old Tom Foley who joked he’d put the heat pump in his bedroom. Doing what she loves By Megan Connolly Liz Nash has been around babies her whole life, working with mothers and their babies in Marlborough as a registered midwife for over 20 years. Training as a nurse in the 1980s, and continued training as a midwife in 1995, Liz relocated to Marlborough in 1996 and has worked at Wairau Hospital as a midwife since 1997 until recently. But post-natal care was, and is her passion because she likes the support she could give to mothers. Since 2000 Liz’s long list of skills in the field has grown, including working in post-natal care as a lactation consultant. Ten years of which have been at the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board Breastfeeding Clinic, core midwifery
and midwifery education roles, as well as providing education as part of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. Now working as a private lactation consultant since January she can focus on what she loves. “Not all breastfeeding journeys are the same,” Liz says. Liz sees women at any stage of the breastfeeding journey from antenatal concerns, complex breastfeeding issues, returning to work planning, and through weaning older baby issues, to support women in their breastfeeding goals. “Some most memorable moments are being able to see families who need the help and support them,” Liz says. Every year on the first week of August the ‘World breastfeeding Week’ takes place which sees the global ‘Big Latch On’
day held, participated in by hundreds of people globally. “A memorable moment would be when I was working at the DHB Breastfeeding Clinic. “I had a client who aimed to go to and participate in the Big Latch On with all the other mothers. The look on her face when she succeeded just said ‘I did it!’ “If there’s one thing that’s not changed it’s the hugely complex emotional business between mothers and families and not one journey is the same,” she says. In her free time Liz lives in the Marlborough Sounds, walks her dog Moana, and spends a lot of time with her grandchildren. Contact Liz at milkyway. liz@gmal.com for more information.

Water polo team heads to Auckland By Megan Connolly Local Water Polo team, Marlborough Polo Jacks, are levelling up their fundraising efforts in hopes to get them to Auckland on July 7 as part of the Pan Pacific Youth Water polo Festival. The Under 14s are shovelling dry sheep manure that has come from under player Georgia Morrison’s woolshed and selling it in large fertiliser bags. The cost per bag is $10 and all the profits will set the girls up for their time Auckland for the 10-day event. Shovelling manure isn’t your typical sleepover either. The team used their slumber party as a way to fill up as many bags a possible, managing over 100 bags, a team member’s mum says. The Marlborough Polo Jacks are the only team from Marlborough to be going up to Auckland to compete in the tournament and have been training six days a week in preparation for all their games. Recently the girls travelled down to Christchurch to compete and won their under 14s category over Otago and Canterbury teams. “The girls are very excited to be going up to Auckland now,” a team member’s mum says.
