By Celeste Alexander Murray Neal has hung up his jacket and helmet for the final time after deciding to step down from the position of chief fire officer for the Renwick Volunteer Fire Brigade. In fact he has decided to step down completely as a member of the brigade to focus on his role as the St John Marlborough territory manager. Murray has been involved with the brigade for most of his life thanks to his father Des Neal who served before him. Continued on page 2 After nearly 22 years with the Renwick Volunteer Fire Service, Murray Neal has put away his gear for the final time.

Time with fire service ‘an honour’ Continued from page 1 Murray was only a toddler when he first stepped inside the Renwick station. His father Des was a volunteer firefighter and went on to serve around 27 years. He says growing up watching his father volunteer instilled in him the same passion and drive to help the community. “It’s satisfying and enables you to offer something back. It’s also very sobering at times especially when you attend accidents where people lost their lives. “As someone once said, there’s good, bad and sad times but someone’s got to do that job and for me it’s been an honour,” Murray says. After finishing school Murray set off to Lincoln University and later away from the region

to work. He returned to Renwick and owned a horticulture company. This gave him the flexibility to become a firefighter and living close to the station meant he could attend most daytime call-outs. Murray trained with the ambulance service that was then part of the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board as a casual ambulance officer, then moved to St John when they took over the ambulance service in 2006. “It happened because of the fire service as we were often arriving at accidents ahead of the ambulances so I decided to pursue more medical training. “Eventually I moved up through the ranks at the brigade to chief fire officer and with these leadership skills I also

took up the territory manager’s position for St John. “So essentially a chunk of my management abilities that got me into this role at St John came from the brigade,” he says. Murray went on to serve eight years as the CFO but with changes on the horizon for both the fire service and St John, he decided to step away from the brigade and “make way for new blood”. “This brigade has a good heart and really great people so it’s a good time to give someone else the opportunity. “It wasn’t an easy decision as it’s been a big part of my life. “I’ve made a whole group of friends here that I otherwise may not have been friends with, but I plan to be available for training if and when needed,” he says.

By Bill McElhinney Fun, learning and food at the end – what’s not to like? The Marlborough Youth Trust is offering people from ages 12 to 24 the chance to have it all this Friday. “We’re staging an Amazing Race,” youth worker Chris Lippiatt says. “Teams of two will go to various businesses around Blenheim and compete in a series of challenges at each one. “For example, the Blenheim Police will put teams through a physical challenge course. “At Wadsco Motors, team members will be taught some basic car sales skills, and they will then try their skills out on some people pretending to be car buyers!” There are spot prizes up for grabs and at

the end of the event there is a free dinner at the Joocy Loocy cafe. “It’s $5 per person and there will be two people in each team,” Chris says. “You’ll not only be competing for a grand prize, you’ll also be getting some insight into the amazing careers on offer here in Marlborough.” Those wanting to take part are asked to register as soon as possible by contacting the Youth Trust in Arthur Street or email youthworker@myt.org.nz. “The race runs from 11am to 5pm and we only have space for 10 teams, so don’t wait,” Chris says. The race will also be filmed and when edited will be posted on social media.

Youth worker Chris Lippiatt is urging young people to register now for the Occupation Exploration Amazing Race on Friday.

The workshop will be held at the Marlborough Community Centre from 1.30-3.30pm. It will be aimed at helping older persons to think about the opportunities and constraints provided by their current home, and to identify more clearly the issues or concerns they might have about their living environment whether now or into the near future. Entry is free however a donation is welcome.

A Springbok praying mantis. The females are devouring our native species. Inset: A Springbok praying mantis egg case. If you find these, get rid of them.

Sex and death: it’s happening here in our own back yards By Bill McElhinney Sex, death and an alien invader it sounds like a B grade movie plot. But Blenheim man Graham Check fears such a scenario is playing out in his own back yard. Graham recently discovered a large, green praying mantis on his kitchen window sill. “It’s mid-winter, and the New Zealand praying mantis does not winter over, so I wondered who this visitor was,” Graham says. “I discovered it’s a Springbok praying mantis. They originated from South Africa and were first found here back in about 1974. “Now it looks like they’re in Blenheim and Nelson.” Graham started looking for praying mantis egg cases and found 10 or 12 of them on the north and east

brick walls of his house, secured in the mortar joints up under the soffit, sheltered from the weather and in a cosy, warm spot. “The egg cases are quite large, creamy white to light brown, with a distinctive handle or tail at one end,” Graham says. “After looking around another house I found more egg cases, and three speedy Springbok praying mantis adults.” The Springbok praying mantis is a menace because the female’s pheromones attract the New Zealand male mantis. The male thinks it can mate with the Springbok but doesn’t get a chance. The female invader instead devours her prospective suitor. By comparison, the New Zea-

land female does not cannibalise her suitor. No one knows how many native males are being eaten by the female invaders, but observers say it appears Springbok mantises have begun displacing native mantises. So how can you tell which are native and which aren’t? Graham says the New Zealand mantis is always bright green. It has a wide, flat thorax (the long collar between the abdomen and the head). Most distinctively, the adult has a purple dot on the inside of each of its grasping forelegs, or forearms if you like. If you see the purple spot, you’ve got yourself a native. The Springbok mantis can be a range of colours from brown to bright green. They are always

distinctively skinny in that bit behind the head, giving them a classic hammerhead appearance. The New Zealand mantis eggcase, from which 20 or so fully formed but tiny critters will emerge in spring, is oval, with an upper surface showing delicately wavy figures-of-eight. They are usually brown. The Springbok egg-case is a puffy-white, rather untidy, oblong pavlova and frequently found glued into crevasses and corners of wood and concrete. Graham is fighting the invader by removing all the egg cases he can find and putting them in a jar, along with any Springbok mantis he finds. “I put the lid on and give them woof of fly spray,” he says.

Book Festival a big success Sue Trueman and Cathie Ferguson in their new Market Street shop, Saturday.

Saturdays won’t be same for this crafty couple By Bill McElhinney Cathy Ferguson loves cake decorating, quilting, stitching and making dolls. For years her Springlands garage has been filled with handmade dolls, pattern books, quilting materials and other craft materials. Inspired by magazines, pattern books and the Pinterest website, Cathy has passed on the skills she learned as a child to others who wanted to learn to sew. Her grandmothers both nurtured her love of fabric and sewing, and she remembers her first creation when she was six - a set of doilies. A demand for craft materials led to Cathie setting up a shop at home, but it was only open on Saturdays. Now Cathie has taken the plunge and with friend Sue Trueman, who she met on a cake decorating course, has opened a shop in town. It’s called Saturday “because that’s when

we used to open,” Cathie says, and is situated in Market Street in the premises formerly occupied by Avalon Jewellers. “It’s exciting,” Cathie says. “We’re doing it because there’s a demand for quilting fabrics and craft materials.” “And we’re locals,” Sue says. “People have already said they’re glad we’re not a chain store!” It’s the first time business venture for the two crafty ladies, but they see it as a natural progression from what they were already doing. Cathie has given up her job to set up the shop but Sue will keep working at her job in the meantime and assist Cathie when she can. “We hope to provide things like patterns, which have been hard to get,” Cathie says. “And we’re also going to be the Elna sewing machine agency. There are still a lot of people sewing out there.”

By Bill McElhinney The fifth annual Marlborough Book Festival wrapped up at the Picton Library on Monday night with Selina Tusitala Marsh sharing stories of her Poet Laureate Tokotoko. “I’m sure many people have increased the size of the bedside reading pile after this weekend,” committee member Sonia O’Regan says. On Sunday about 50 children and adults enjoyed hearing from the co-editors of Annual and Annual 2 at the Marlborough Library. The Annual editors, Kate De Goldi and Susan Paris, talked but how they commission the wide variety of work in the best-selling miscellanies full of stories, comics, poems, how-to, songs, games and other formats. When question time came, Tasmyn Kibblewhite, 13, from Rarangi asked what many fans want to know: “Will you do another one? I love them.” Kate joked that their husbands might not be that keen, given the time that they dedicate to the wonderful books. But the audience got the distinct impression that she and Susan were already thinking about ideas for the next volume. Kate and Susan were among 13 guest authors who spoke at about 20 sessions in Blenheim and surrounds over the weekend. Feedback from the audience and authors has been overwhelming, Sonia says. “We’re so grateful to our sponsors who help us put on a special event and treat the authors to next-level hospitality in Marlborough,” Sonia says. The Marlborough audiences are part of

Jono Planthaber and Genevieve McGill engrossed in Annual 2 .

what makes the event special too, she says. “The people in the audience were so engaged. And all the authors had full houses - sometimes there were people waiting at the door of the Boathouse Theatre to see if they could get a last minute ticket to sessions that had sold out.” About 1700 tickets were sold to the 21 sessions at seven venues over the weekend. About 20 percent of ticket sales were to people from out of town. People travelled from Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch, Nelson and other centres. The event is organised by volunteers under the umbrella of a charitable trust. Money raised will help bring the New Zealand Book Council Writers in Schools programme to Marlborough over three days in August. “So ticket buyers should feel proud that their purchase is helping our region’s children to meet real life authors and to discover the joy of reading too,” Sonia says.

I’m not sure that’s the best approach to encourage people to vaccinate.

I guess at the end of the day, it’s their choice to vaccinate or not.

I don’t think that’s cool at all. Every parent should be able to choose whether they would or wouldn’t want to vaccinate their child.

It should be their choice, It goes against some people’s values to be vaccinated.

As much as I would vaccinate my own children, everyone should have the right to choose.

It brings up human rights. I don’t think you should be punished for free thinking.

About a bypass and roads Dear Ed, Deputy mayor Sloan is all chuffed about the idea of a new Grove Road bridge. But he’s got the cart before the horse. A truck bypass is first needed. Get the trucks out of Blenheim, then the Grove Road bridge will cope. As for his reply about the shambles in Eltham Road, as chairman of works committee he scored a D mark. The kerbing is a crazy design, and obstructs traffic flow. The Taylor River is a cycle way for school kids. How much did the mess cost? Other messes are happening. No wonder Blenheim rates are high. Path blocking is illegal Dear Ed, Don’t do this. This car was seen blocking the footpath for several hours. It is illegal to park on a footpath. The deputy mayor is not at all interested or in favour of a bypass; in fact he told me that he hoped to widen Grove Road for the heavy traffic. It has been explained before that the bypass now would be better and the bridge later. The NZ Transport Agency has got it the wrong way round. Without the heavy through traffic the bridge could continue to serve Blenheim as it has for 102 years.

Dear Ed, I hear it rumoured that the Marlborough District Council has appointed a ranger to seek and flush out the homeless from their hiding places. It is said that he is of large build and very intimidating. He orders them out from their hiding places, takes

their sleeping bags and eating equipment, etc. before sending them on their way. One hopes this is just a rumour, as I’m certain we all wish to live in a genuine caring community. We must never forget that “there but for the grace of God go you and I.” Judi Woolley

The deputy mayor says that the whole community would benefit from the new bridge. I disagree. It is possible that the bypass would be agreed to in 10 years time – do it now. DOC ranger Ryan Sutherland from NCTIR planting an Ōhau rock daisy on the Ōhau Point bluff overlooking the Kaikōura coast. Photo:NCTIR.

Staff scale steep cliffs to restore rare rock daisy By Bill McElhinney Motorists travelling along the coastal highway between Blenheim and Christchurch are probably blissfully unaware of how much trouble the Department of Conservation has gone to in order to preserve a rare native plant. The Ohau rock daisy grows only on the Ohau Point coastal bluffs, and its habitat was hit by a landslide which followed the November 2016 Kaikoura earthquake. Department of Conservation staff estimated only 80-100 plants remained and an estimated 95 per cent of its habitat had been wiped out when they checked the plants by helicopter after the earthquake. Seed from six surviving plants on the steep slope was collected by abseilers from the North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery, the delivery arm of the New Zealand

Transport Agency. The seeds were taken to Titoki Nursery near Nelson where rock daisy seedlings were grown from the seeds to restore the population. Last month DOC and Infrastructure Recovery staff abseiled down the steep Ohau Point bluffs to plant 50 of the propagated rock daisy plants back on their natural home. “The new plantings and regrowth give us hope of rebuilding the Ohau rock daisy population but it is early days yet for knowing whether these rock daisies will survive,” DOC South Marlborough ranger Jan Clayton-Greene says. “The Ohau rock daisy population was at risk of extinction due to the sudden drop to such low numbers and in a location where further landslides might occur. “We now want to get as many rock daisies growing there as we can as

the more plants there are, the more seeds will be dispersed into the landscape to help the population recover quicker.” “The Kaikoura abseiling teams were pleased to be involved in retrieving the daisy seeds and we hope to use the plants grown from them in new places around Ohau Point,” Tim Crow, Transport Agency earthquake recovery manager says. The team plans to put 67 of the propagated rock daisy plants by the rebuilt transport route at Ohau Point, and some seeds from these are also expected to blow onto the bluffs to create new growth. Another 36 of the propagated plants will remain at the nursery as an insurance, so Ohau rock daisy plants continue to exist should there be a threat to the survival of those in their natural environment.

Angie and Jess’s love at first sight Contributed by Robyn Bennett Angie Bennett (no relation to the writer) couldn’t imagine a life without being surrounded by animals. Her poodle, Jess, bounds into the kitchen, bounces onto her lap and snuggles up tight. “Jess was the best Trade Me purchase I’ve ever made,” says Angie. “I didn’t even meet her first. I just relied on my intuition that Jess was going to be a good dog for me.” Jess was flown across Cook Strait, met Angie and it was love at first sight. “Jess fitted into the family immediately.” Angie’s love affair with animals began when she moved from Blenheim to the West Coast. “I had my first pony, Mystique, when I was ten-yearsold. “My mother, sisters and I used to go riding and we’d be gone all day. I liked the sense of freedom.” Two years later Angie went to ride track work, galloping horses. “I loved the speed and power. A good start burst is amazing. “I also had a pet prematurely-born Jersey calf called Squirt who I reared. “I came back to Blenheim

when I was 16-years-old and milked cows for 12 months.” Now Angie has a five-yearold horse, Mickey. “I broke him myself. “He’s a bit of a handful! I try to ride him every day and I’d like to do more dressage and showing hopefully at A&P Shows.” Add to the animal mix is pet calves, pigs, lambs and a goat. “Oh, and our other dog is Zac, a Fox Terrier Papyan cross and we also have Smokey the cat who just turned up four years ago. “Plus we have a small flock of Dorper sheep. “They’re a South African breed, which are good for small land blocks and they don’t get fly strike.” After having a variety of jobs and now raising a family Angie says, “I wanted to work for myself. “Jess is the reason why I started grooming dogs. When I took her to be groomed she hated being separated from me. She’d howl like crazy, and the neighbours wondered what was going on.” Angie and her poodle Jess. Fountain needs clean after detergent dump By Bill McElhinney The Seymour Square fountain can be a magnet for mischief-makers. Early on Monday morning Marlborough District Council worker Gavin Smith was cleaning out the fountain after detergent was dumped in to it over the weekend. “If the fountain was going it would be blowing foam everywhere,” Gavin says. It may have been dishwashing liquid that was dumped in the fountain. Regardless of exactly what it was, Gavin had to spend several hours cleaning it out. “It gets in the plumbing and sticks to the surfaces, so it all has to be removed,” Gavin says. Does this happen often? “Just about every April 1,” Gavin says with a grin. Besides being a target for foam vandals, the fountain also occasionally attracts other unwanted

users. A few years ago a man was moved on after he was found, equipped with towel and soap, washing in the fountain. “We had a similar incident just recently,” Gavin says. “A guy was using the fountain to wash his clothes in.” During autumn council staff are kept busy clearing the fountain filter, which gets blocked with fallen leaves. A band rotunda was demolished in 1953 to make way for the fountain, which was erected as a memorial to those who gave their lives in World War II. Containing 20,000 litres of water and with 62 combinations of water jets running on an 18 minute cycle, the fountain is a popular attraction, especially when it is lit up at night. However, it is not a washing or bathing facility, and foam dumpers should know their prank takes a lot of time and trouble to repair.

By Bill McElhinney Frosty mornings, sunny days – it’s winter in Marlborough. And according to the figures from Rob Agnew at the Marlborough Research Centre, we’ve been getting a few more frosts than normal. In June, Blenheim had 13 ground frosts and five air frosts, quite a few more than this time last year. The coldest ground frost was recorded on June 7 at minus 5 degrees Celsius with an air frost of -0.7C, Rob says. The coldest morning was June 23, with a ground frost of -4.7C and an air frost of -1.3C. The mean temperature of June was just below average at 8.6C, although for the 11 months from July last year to May this year temperatures have been above average in Blenheim. In fact we’ve recorded the warmest July to June on record for the 86 years, Rob says. With low rainfall from October to December it looked as if Marlborough was heading into

a summer drought. But the skies opened in early January and February this year, the wettest on record, so it turned it into a very wet but warm summer, Rob says. All of which hasn’t helped Blenheim in the 2018 sunshine stakes race. While there was debate over whether Richmond was entitled to run in the “sunniest town” race, the month of June saw the Nelson suburb record 22.5 hours more sunshine than Blenheim. At the end of May, Blenheim was only 1.5 hours behind Richmond, but the town is now a whole 24 hours behind Richmond. For the month of June, Blenheim recorded 12 hours less sunshine than last year, and just below its long-term average. The first three weeks of the month were fairly overcast, but things heated up later in the month, with 67.8 hours recorded over the final nine days.

Pupils pursue their passions at Renwick School By Megan Connolly The Year 3 and 4 classes at Renwick School presented their history projects to their classmates and families last week after five weeks of hard work. The students were given the opportunity to focus on anything they wanted from history, whether that be 20 years ago or the Stone Age, and worked on the projects in small groups of about three or four. The teachers gave the students a plan and a timeline to help them, but the rest of the research was done in small groups.

“We came up with heaps of ideas, buddied up and then chose what we wanted to do,” student Ava Marcroft says. “We all helped each other out.” The projects were part of a new module of learning called ‘Pop inquiry- the Pursuit of Passion’. It was all about interest in learning and working together as a team to collect research and display the information in a creative format. Some of the projects were on basketball, the ice age, medieval knights, dinosaurs, World War II, the Stone Age, vintage cars

and motorbikes, artists, and Mount Everest. What did they enjoy learning most about their projects? “Finding out things I didn’t know before,” Ava says. “What was most interesting for me was finding out what the hikers ate going up Mount Everest,” Elle Gray says. Bella Le Compte did her project on Rembrandt and Picasso and “finding out about other artists and the different types of art. I couldn’t believe the prices of Picasso pieces,” she says.

Giddy Aunts

Giddy Aunts is a new and exciting crafts, gifts and arts shop that opened on Waikawa Road. It all began when Lynette and Murray Christie bought a 100 year old cottage on Waikawa Road and had fun restoring it. While enjoying a walk she discovered a wee shop which “got the cogs moving”. Lynette and her sister Fiona have long talked of having an art/gift shop to sell their crafts which they enjoy making, so after a chat with the owners and some brainstorming between sisters they found a good fit with the Giddy Aunts name. “Then began a frantic flurry of business to stock the shop,” she says. The shop opens from Tuesday - Saturday 10:30am-4:30pm. Lynette is enjoying the support of the local community and the quiet winter months. They plan to have new paintings and products monthly and to grow their giftline. Visit Giddy Aunts at 151b Waikawa Road or call 021 028 55 942.

There are some exciting things happening at Mondrians Restaurant, located within the Scenic Hotel Marlborough. A brand new menu has been launched and in the short time it’s been available, it’s already proved to be a hit with locals. New dishes such as the Kumara and Feta Croquettes and the Duck Breast with Chinese 5 Spices are among the top favourites, but the most popular so far is the Crispy Pork Belly, head chef Rene Mulder says. “By far this is a top seller, and pretty much from the day this menu launched,” he says. Rene is another new addition to the restaurant and is enjoying his new role working alongside the restaurant team. Originally from the Netherlands, Rene has been working in the hospitality industry for 17 years. He came to New Zealand five years ago and since arriving in Marlborough, he says he’s really enjoying what the region has to offer. “This is where the inspiration has come from for this menu. It’s about taking good local produce and making it the star of the

dish... it’s quite simple,” he says. Some of the dishes have a touch of Asian influence, but overall it’s about “promoting local produce”, Rene adds. “We have also taken some classic dishes and added a different touch to them, like adding cardamom to our butterscotch sauce, or cinnamon to our crème brulee.” Every dish on Mondrian Restaurant’s menu is matched with a local wine. Restaurant manager Ranjith Mohanan says the wine matches are included in the menu as a guide, but staff are happy to make other recommendations. “Almost all of the wines we have here are from Marlborough so there is a very good selection to choose from,” he says. And Ranjith should know, as he has been with Scenic Hotel Marlborough for over five years. He worked as a duty manager but earlier this year moved over to the restaurant team and into the role as manager. “I’m also very excited about this menu. The feedback from locals has been excellent,” he says. “We look forward to welcoming you.”

Your guide to HOME MORTGAGES

Let’s talk about your future It’s been a busy time for the team at the Mortgage Room, particularly with first home buyers who are looking to use their KiwiSaver for the deposit. Owner Paul Fuller says KiwiSaver has for a number of years been the key to accessing the property market, along with other funding sources such as the HomeStart Grant. “It’s been great to see more and more of our first home clients settling into their own homes. With the right advice from the start you can also be working towards your goal of owning a home,” he says. Paul suggests that being organised with your finances is the best approach to applying for a mortgage. “Before going out and looking at houses to buy, it’s best to be pre-approved. So work at clearing up debt, having a personal budget in place and a savings history. These are all things that lenders

are looking for. “This is where our team at the Mortgage Room can help. We can sit down with you and discuss your goals, look at where your finances are sitting now and offer expert advice,” he says. Advice will include the importance of making sure the client’s income is protected with mortgage repayment insurance, finding the right life insurance cover, and ensuring that going forward there is a solid financial plan in place. “There’s a list of things we suggest people have with them when they come to us which helps to make the whole process easier,” he says. - Bring two forms of ID, including a valid passport. - Proof of where you live, like a utilities bill. - Proof of deposit and where the money is coming from. - Proof of wages and income

from the past two months. - Bank statements and evidence of any loan history. “We look at all of this information and use it to find the best finance option for the client,” Paul says. At the Mortgage Room there is a wealth of experience when it comes to the finance industry. Paul has been working the industry for 35 years and he and wife Robyn have owned the business since they set it up back in 2006. Last year they welcomed to the team Chris Mitchell who has also enjoyed a 35-year career in banking. He previously worked as the branch manager of National Bank and ASB. “We are supported by a fantastic team including my wife Robyn along with Bob and Leanne,” Paul says. “Come in and see us at the Mortgage Room, and let’s talk about your future.”

Laura Goldfinch - Blue Team Sponsors - Robbie Blick Building and husband Richard Goldfinch Reason for participating: “Well the truth is I had someone talk about it ‘24/7’ at work! I found myself pondering. I could do that? I want to do that, I should do that, so here I am! For years I’ve had health issues and still do so to complete this task of boxing would be a great personal achievement for me. I believe in Fight for Life Education/Harold the Giraffe and reaching and teaching the children at their level, talking about

issues/fears that are spoken about and, not spoken about. With three primary age boys these things are important to me and, who doesn’t want to see the stars in the roof? So for a personal goal and supporting Fight for Life Education makes a perfect match!? To my sponsors: Rob Blick Building is a local business owned and operated by Correna and Robbie Blick. The Blicks are hard work-

Harriers events

ing and they are about people and helping people fulfil their dreams. My husband Richard Goldfinch knew I was looking for a new challenge and an opportunity, and his support means everything. However, I know he is hearing about boxing 24/7 now! To my sponsors’ thank you for your support for Fight for Life Education and your personal belief in me so I guess .......watch this space.

The Marlborough Harrier Club is holding a pack/training run or walk leaving from the clubrooms at at Oliver Park at 6pm on Thursday. Reflector gear is compulsory. On Saturday there is a Hares, Hounds and Harriers at Barwood Farm, Seddon. This will be a lot of fun, as those that have been before know. All to meet at Robbie and Leanne’s front gate 737 Marama Road, Seddon at 11:30 for a 12:00 (sharp) start. Car pooling leaves Oliver Park at 10:45am. Afternoon tea is planned for 2:30 to coincide with the Hunt Club prizegiving. Because we have no idea of the course or the hazards involved, this run will not be open to children.

The Sun will be profiling each Fight For Life competitor in the lead up to the big event on September 29.
