By Celeste Alexander Nestled within Brayshaw Park is a little old cottage which is made up of two hunting huts joined together and part of a workshop. The quaint little garden at the front is speckled with painted wooden animals, ornaments and dozens more colourful decorations. Around Christmas time it shines up even brighter with trains and festive lights. It’s known as the Brayshaw Park caretaker’s cottage, but to Alison and Eddie Gallop it’s home. Caretakers love their home Continued from page 1 Alison and Eddie have been the caretakers for the Marlborough Vintage Farm Machinery Association for over five years now and they say nothing brightens their day more than meeting all of the “interesting people” that visit the park. Oh, and of course giving rides on the ever popular Thomas the tractor of course, Eddie says. Thomas is one of the stars of the park and it’s not unusual to see huge lines of children waiting for their ride during public open days. The trailer that’s pulled behind is fitted with two rows of seats, seats that many may recognise as they came from the old theatre. “Thomas is so popular that you can hear the kids at the bottom of the park making their way up,” Eddie grins. “A couple of times Thomas had broken down so we had to use another tractor, a rather nice one too, but kids would walk straight past because they

didn’t see Thomas.” Eddie and Alison like to have Thomas the tractor running most Sundays (weather dependent) and there’s a gold coin collection for rides, however Eddie says sometimes he finds $20 notes put in. They have even hosted groups which come up for a ride around the park and some morning tea. This is where Alison comes in. She runs the catering out of the kitchen in the Denton building. This is where many people go on open days for the popular Devonshire tea and scone, plus other assortments of goodies on offer. “We’ve even served the Mayor,” she says. As the sun goes down Alison and Eddie close up the entrance gates, check everything is locked and secure and continue to keep an eye on the goings-on at the park. “We’ve been pretty lucky in that we haven’t had too much happen.

Alison and Eddie Gallop’s Brayshaw Park home.

“People get to know that we live here and the regulars that walk through here would tell us if there’s anything going on,” Eddie says. “If you haven’t been to visit Bray-

shaw Park yet, make sure you do,” Alison says. “It’s amazing the number of people who live in Marlborough say they’ve never been.”

“Humbling” to receive awards By Celeste Alexander Renwick woman Claire Wooldridge Way is still smiling after receiving two incredible awards for her work within the Department of Conservation. Claire has been working as a health and safety representative, putting health and safety into action for DOC’s South Marlborough district for a number of years. At a recent Government Health and Safety workshop, attended by 350 public servants, Claire received both the Spirit of Service Employee Representative of the Year and the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Supreme Award. These awards are in recognition of Claire’s work following the Kaikoura Earthquake to build a system to monitor not just physical safety, but also mental wellbeing. For Claire, receiving the awards was “very humbling”. “Being recognised in front of my peers for something l feel is so important was pretty overwhelming.

“Getting the overall award was the cream on top. “We are very fortunate to work in a country that is striving towards getting people safe home every day and that we have a government and DOC-driven expectation that everyone will work towards that goal. “After the 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes, the need to look after and strengthen our team and our wellbeing became a priority. “We were involved in the immediate civil defence response and we are still dealing with the effects on our landscapes, facilities, flora and fauna. We are still finding out what our new normal is. “We are fortunate that there are people like John Kirwan working to normalise conversations about wellbeing and mental health. Recognising that if you are able to help one person be well, resilient or to get help is an amazing thing, it effects them, their work team, work place, family and ultimately their Claire Wooldridge Way with her Health, Safety and Wellbeing community,” she says. Health Board budget The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has ended the financial year with a small $33,000 surplus, although it was planning for a surplus of $3.5 million. Chief executive Peter Bramley says the health system is under “significant financial pressure” because of the region’s ageing population, more p r e s e nt at i o n s to e m e r g e n c y departments and the rising complexity of admissions. Last year, the board ended the financial year with a surplus of $3.23 million.

Date night was a winner By Bill McElhinney They’ve been happily married for 13 years, have four lovely children, they get on well – why go to a marriage course? “Well we both come from broken homes, and we know what it’s like to be in a one-parent family,” Hamish Harper says. Hamish, a building control officer with the Marlborough District Council, and his wife Annie, a former veterinary nurse, last year did a seven week course designed to help couples strengthen their relationship. “It was great,” Hamish says. “It reinforced what we were doing well and highlighted the areas we needed to improve on.”

“And we learned how our love languages are so different,” Annie says. “Doing what feeds one partner may not be what feeds the other. I still have to remind myself from time to time what Hamish’s love language is.” “We learned more about why we work together and how we work together and it gives us more confidence about how to live out our married life,” Hamish says. “And we had a nice night out together for seven weeks – a dinner and date,” Annie says. “Friends came to babysit for us, and I hope I can repay the favour this time around.” The marriage course is run by

the Blenheim Nativity Anglican Church, but it’s not just for church-goers, organiser Jonathan Wasley says. “It’s for any married or cohabiting couple who want to invest in their relationship,” Jonathan says. “Some couples already have a strong relationship; others are in need of help. “You don’t need to be a Christian to attend. The course will help develop and strengthen any couple’s relationship. “You can expect a welcoming environment where you will share a meal together. A DVD of practical talks is interspersed with times for private discussion for you as a couple.

“Background music ensures that you can talk in complete privacy. You never share anything about your relationship with anyone other than your partner.” The marriage course is being held at Marlborough Vintners Hotel from 7-9:30pm on Tuesdays, starting on August 14 and finishing on September 25. The cost is $200 per couple for the whole course. “A good marriage takes work,” Hamish says. “It’s a commitment to make to go on the course, but the rewards are worth it.” Annie agrees. “Even if you think everything’s OK in your relationship, go anyway,” she says.

The Ministry of Education is still working on a plan to relocate Marlborough Girls’ and Boys’ Colleges. Education Minister Chris Hipkins ordered a reviewed business case in April and hoped to have a decision by mid-July. However that deadline was pushed out to mid-August when the ministry decided to add the option of putting the colleges on the 13.2-hectare McLachlan St site last month, home to the girls’ college and Bohally Intermediate School. Kim Shannon, the ministr y ’s education infrastructure service head, says they are still working on the reviewed business case for the minister to take to Cabinet. She would not say which sites are included in the business case because of commercial sensitivity.

Thermette Society gathering

A Sun reader sent in this photo of a humourous sight along Dillons Point Road in Blenheim. He said the sight of two dolls posed as if they were changing a car tyre made him ‘stop and do a double take’. “It attracted quite a bit of attention... I definitely saw the funny side.”

By Megan Connolly Smoke, fire and a good cup of tea is all the Thermette Society needs on cold winter days at the Wairau River. Founded by Bill McEwan around nine years ago, the Thermette Society nestles itself on the riverside on the last Sunday of the winter months of June, July and August. To the younger generations, a Thermette may seem a puzzling contraption, but it is an iconic picnic and camping essential familiar to many older kiwis. The origin of the Thermette goes back over 80 years. It was invented in New Zealand by a man named John

Ashley Hart in 1929, and quickly became a popular utensil for anyone who enjoyed camping or a picnic. Thermettes were also used by NZ troops in World War II. The Thermette works quickly, boiling water in less than five minutes by using a small fire at the base of the unit, fuelled by twigs gathered from the nearby surroundings. The heat from the fire rises up from the bottom and heats the water in the coned surface of the Thermette. The smoke comes out of the ‘chimney’ at the top. A Thermette can boil 12 cups of wa-

ter, so you can imagine how many cups of tea can be drunk by the members of the Thermette Society on a cold winter’s day! “You don’t need to worry if you don’t have one, there are plenty here to share,” Bill says. The society isn’t just about the magic of the Thermette. It’s also about all ages coming together and sharing stories, banter and homemade goodies. The next ‘boil up’ is on the last Sunday of August. Anyone interested in getting out into the fresh air with a hot mug of tea is welcome. Bring a mug, chair, and snacks to share.

Rest home clears out aids for less-abled By Bill McElhinney This will be a garage sale with a difference. Instead of the usual household bric-a-brac, there will be walking frames, wheelchairs, toilet aids, furniture: all items designed to make life easier for the elderly and those less abled. The items come from the Bethsaida retirement village, and many are still in good condition while others require some minor work to restore them to a useful state. “People have arrived at the village with various bits and pieces and when they pass away, the family often doesn’t want these items, so they’re left with us,” Bethsaida trustee Paul Ham says. “We’ve had them piled up in storage for some time, and now we want to get rid of them. It’s time for a clear-out.” The garage sale will be held on Saturday morning, August 11, in the building where Countdown Redwoodtown used to be, on the corner of Weld St and Cleghorn Streets. The building is owned by Redwoodtown Development Ltd, which is transforming the

old Countdown site into a retail hub, dubbed The Redwoodtown Hub. The Bethsaida retirement village is run by a charitable trust. In 1973 a group of Blenheim citizens set up the Bethsaida Trust to establish a home for the care of the frail and dependent elderly. Back in the early 1970s there were few private homes for elderly people, and housing options were limited. The Blenheim Catholic parish priest, Father John Sloane, was concerned that some elderly were effectively about to become homeless, as there was no assistance from the government at the time. He started the ball rolling within the community to set up what would become Bethsaida Home for the Aged. “Bethsaida is the only rest home in Marlborough offering units for rental rather than solely for purchase,” Paul says. “We’re proud of the fact that we can cater for people at the lower income scale, and as a result we have an occupancy rate of over 90 percent.”

It’s been fine. We have a log fire so it’s similar to the other winters.

It’s been fine, the bill went up a little bit. I’m with Trustpower.

Normal really, we use the fire a lot so that saves us a lot. It’s been a hard winter!

I’m with Trustpower. I was away for six weeks and I’ve had people stay so it’s dearer than normal but not unreasonable for winter.

Same as usual, it’s where I expected it to be for winter time.

Not too bad. My place is really warm, it’s insulated top and bottom.

Bypass and a bridge Dear Ed, D. Beattie misunderstands who funds the bypass and/or bridge over the Opaoa River. It is the government, because it is a state highway. However, I can appreciate the misunderstanding after Marlborough District councillor Terry Sloan was pictured ecstatic over the prospect of a new bridge. Mr Sloan has not had his thinking cap on. Even if a new bridge is built, trucks to and from the ferry will still clog Grove Road and Main Streets and associated roundabouts. So the priority should be getting the truck bypass done. Rod Heard was so right in his letter in saying do the truck bypass first. Also, the council should be telling parliamentary ministers in Wellington about the need for a truck bypass. Council spending Personal service Dear Ed, Ratepayers must be reeling at this council’s extravagance. On top of $480k to replace the entrance to Pollard Park, there’s $300k to build a bus shelter with a hole in the roof and a mere $422k to replace 328 parking meters with flash new computer controlled devices, not to mention other unnecessary expenditure such as deputy mayor Sloan’s Eltham Road fiasco, libraries etc, while towns (Havelock, Seddon, Picton) have sewage and/or water supply problems. There’s a few new councillors, who seem to have just fallen into line. Dizzy and Disappointed Ratepayer Blenheim

DON’T LET LIFE STOP YOU FROM MOVING A soothing blend to provide targeted comfort and relief. The perfect solution for:

Dear Ed, Is it banking policy to annoy customers by redirecting them to push-button technology? Ever increasing numbers of Kiwis are being captivated by hand-held digital devices and will walk in front of cars and trains, putting their lives at risk. Any business that wants to steer people away from personal service and towards more digital technology should not be surprised if they lose customers. Troubleshooter Blenheim

Dear Ed, Homelessness: it’s a growth industry with no short or medium solutions in sight from either local or national government. George Clark’s Amazing Spaces recently featured a shelter/hostel in Japan with cubicles to rent for a modest price.

menu which is much different to what other restaurants serve. “We like our dishes to look vibrant, fresh and exciting so we plate them in a different way to what you might see elsewhere. Some of our dishes are also very special, passed down through family,” Bu-nga says. A growing number of The Lemongrass dishes are also gluten free and with their focus on lean and green, delicious vegetarian options are available. one on one with the Sun

A life well spent Tales of mountain goose pub meals and a broken young man’s determination to buy a farm are just a few of Alan Young’s memories of growing up in Rai Valley, as Celeste Alexander finds out.

Alan Young and his beloved wife Peggy on their wedding day.

Alan is a resident at Ashwood Park Retirement Village. A kind and polite man with the same cheeky spark in his eye as the young man he describes from his youth. At 87 Alan still vividly remembers every detail of his life, from each of the valleys he lived and worked in, to the full names of those he met over the years. It would be impossible to relay every fascinating story about Alan and his family without writing a novel, however there are a few that still make him laugh to this day. Alan’s family has very deep roots in the Rai Valley area, stemming from his grandmother, Jane Leov who was the daughter of Charles and Matilda Turner, the first people to settle in the remote Rai Valley. The Turners’ cottage remains today, including Jane’s wedding gown, and is registered with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. On Alan’s father’s side, his grandfather was John Cawte, a law keeper for Nelson and Marlborough. He goes on to talk about his parents, Nellie Leov who married George Young. Before George, Nellie had been in love with her “beau” who was killed in World War One and buried at sea. Her union with George was not liked by his parents because of Nellie’s German descent.

The couple were disowned which meant George could not take over the family farm, so instead the two bought a slaughter house and built a butcher shop in Rai Valley.

“Forty-three men rode out of our valley on horses the day the war was declared.” Alan recalls a story his father tells him of his mother’s tenacity and pride. “Two Yanks came into the butcher shop and asked to speak to the boss. Mum said ‘that’s me’. They refused to speak to her because she was a woman and after some discussion about it, Mum pulled out a BSA 22 rifle and put a bullet up the spout before telling them to leave. “Dad came out to diffuse the situation from there, confirming that Mum was in fact, the boss,” he laughs. It turns out the American men would grant George a contract to supply meat to men brought over and set up in tents on Okiwi Bay

hill. These men were previously unemployed and brought over to mill wood for housing. In between their busy schedule with the butcher shop, slaughter house and helping out on surrounding farms, they started their family. The first was a baby girl who passed away at four days old. “Then there was Eric, a bright lad. Then Jean, a nice natured girl like our father, then me, Owen and later Eila,” Alan says. Alan was born on quite a significant day in NZ’s history, February 3, 1931, the day of the devastating Napier earthquake. When WWII broke out in 1939, Alan says he was nearly nine-years old and remembers his mother on the floor hysterical. “She cried for a week. “Forty-three men rode out of our valley on horses the day the war was declared and who was left to take over the running of the farms? The women and children,” he says. Fortunately Alan’s father was not enlisted as he was the only one capable of fixing machinery around the valley, but it was something he remained bitter about for the remainder of his life, Alan says. During Alan’s childhood he suffered a very serious injury which impacted on the rest of his life. During a paddock rugby match he had his

leg, hip and back broken. He spent 14 weeks in hospital learning to walk again. But those injuries never healed properly, nor did the doctors pick up on his spinal injury. So at age 16 he underwent surgery to put his hip joint back into the socket. But he remained determined that he would buy a farm one day. It was also around the time he met his wife Peggy Fenwick. After some sweet talking with the staff during his two-and-a-half year stint recovering in hospital, he convinced them to give Peggy a job and she went on to become a successful district nurse in the Marlborough Sounds area. Alan purchased his farm at Okuri Point, aged 24 which he paid 14,000 pounds for. “I saved my money from a few ventures, including the trading of venison meat, which was illegal then. Quite often venison was nicknamed ‘mountain goose’ and was a favourite dish at the Canvastown Pub,” he grins. Alan and Peggy never had their own children, however they adopted. Hiring equipment and machinery rather than buying could be the best option for your next project.

Ten reasons to hire 1. Economy - How much use does your equipment get? When you own equipment, it can spend much of its time idle, offering no return on your investment. Hire and you only pay when the machine(s) is actually being utilised. 2. Conserved capital - Hire lets you have the use of the equipment without capital outlay. You only pay when it’s working for you. Spend the capital that hiring saves you on investments in products or services which will allow your business to grow. 3. Try before you buy - Not sure which size/model will best do the job? Do you have requirements that change frequently? Hire gives you great flexibility and hands-on experience with different machines, providing a guide for future purchases. 4. Fast cost recovery - Generally, hire payments are fully tax deductible, while purchased equipment is depreciated. Tax savings yield slowly and independent professional advice is recommended in planning what suits you best. 5. Maintenance costs eliminated - Why

have the expenses of maintaining, certifying and warehousing machinery? When you hire, you gain many benefits like professional technical support too. 6. Preserved credit - Why allow capital purchases to erode big dollars in operational funds and available credit lines? When you hire, capital is preserved for other areas 7. Obsolescence is eliminated - Take the risk of owning obsolete machinery away, with hire, you don’t end up owning an old dog! 8. Stretched budgets - Urgent deadlines or unforeseen inefficiencies may require more equipment than your purchase budget will allow. Hire is the most cost-practical and economic solution. 9. Expense allocation - Any difficult, complicated costings can be easily overcome. Hire payments can be sorted directly and fairly to the specific clients or contracts where the equipment was used. 10. Unforeseen needs satisfied - When initial equipment breaks down, or the pressure comes on in peak periods, hire can place the necessary equipment where you need it.

Ultraquip opens new building There’s been some exciting development taking place near the corner of Alabama Road and Redwood Street, one that Ultraquip Hire owners are proud to be part of. Ultraquip Hire is a 100 percent locally owned business that specialises in the hire of machinery and equipment, from battery drills through to a fleet of excavators. Owners Daniel and Ange Fisher have relocated their business right next door to the new NPD Redwood station, and into a purpose built building. The relocation has also enabled them to increase their fleet of machinery and range of equipment available for hire. “We now have a total of 10 excavators ranging from 1.7 tonne to 5 tonne and late last year we purchased Collett Commercials to include a fleet of 12 seater mini buses, utes and trucks. “We even have house moving

and tipper trucks available,” Daniel says. Ultraquip Hire was established in Marlborough two years ago and has something for a variety of applications including construction, landscaping and gardening through to loaders. With Daniel’s background in the landscaping and construction industries, he has personally handpicked a wide range of quality machinery and equipment which he says is new, dependable and “up there with the best in the market”. “And if we don’t have it, we will source it for you,” Daniel adds. “All of our machinery and equipment is well maintained and ready to go. “It’s also quick and easy to hire and our staff are friendly and approachable. “Call in and see us at 109b Redwood Street, we look forward Top: Owners Ange and Daniel Fisher. Table tennis Alex’s Team continues to lead the table tennis competition following the third round of matches last Thursday. They beat Young and Restless 8-4. Alex Kennedy won his three singles and is getting back to top form after five weeks away. Jeff Sawyer was in good form as well and is undefeated since the new competition started three weeks ago. Warren Haszard led the way as Predator 3 beat Ken’s Team 9-3. He had three wins, including a four set win over the big hitting Ken Thompsett. Jason Kennedy gained two wins and just lost to Ken in four sets. Dennis Burkhart had a good night, winning two doubles and had a singles win over former Flaxbourne team-mate, Ross Ward. Billy Hebberd attacked well to gain three wins for Matt’s Team as they beat Jamie’s Team 8-4. Nathan Watson was in commanding form winning his three singles without the loss of a set. His match against Vanessa Wood-Lin was a spectacular affair with Nathan lobbing the ball back from near the barricades and Vanessa smashing the ball into the corners. The Marlborough under-18 team, consisting of four boys and four girls, travelled to Nelson last Sunday with coach Debbie Stratford and some enthusiastic supporters for the annual Angell Shield clash with Nelson. The Marlborough team won the Shield last season on a count back, but just lost out this season 22 matches to 18 (69 games to 65). Nelson won the boys’ section 15-5. Alex Kennedy, who is the Marlborough closed senior champion, won four singles out of four. Rory Osborne, the Marlborough number two, was pipped in the fifth set by Kvido Tayerle and just lost out 11-9 in the fifth to Finn Brown, who is one of Nelson’s most promising juniors. Marlborough took the girls section 13-7. Under-15 national squad member Vanessa Wood-Lin had four comfortable wins. Hannah Smit also gained four wins, including a win over hard bat player, Olivia Smith, whom she lost to in a previous tournament. Shield success for local shooters

The Marlborough Smallbore Rifle team won the prestigious Andrew and Faulkner Shield match in Nelson recently. The shield is contested between all South Island Associations and this year 12 teams from as far south as Otago competed. Marlborough started a little

finally winning by a three point margin. This is the seventh time that Marlborough have claimed the shield in its 60 plus year history, the other times being 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012, and 2013. Top scorer for Marlborough was Brad Palatchie with 296.15. Marlborough scores: Brad Palat-

Kelsie Brown Sponsor - Sponsor - Cory’s Electrical After coming back from London at the beginning of the year, I mentioned to my mum that I would like to go to a boxing class and up my fitness. So she signed me up for Fight For Life and here we are. So far this has been a really fun and rewarding experience, learning how to take a punch

and hopefully land a couple too; a mental and physical challenge with a laugh on the side. The Life Education Trust is such a worthy cause, teaching children many life skills and values. I have seen their work in action as both a student and a teacher and am amazed by all the work

they do within the community. A massive thanks to all the sponsors taking on a boxer, specifically mine - Cory’s Electrical, I wouldn’t be here without you. Fingers crossed for no first round knockout (at least not on my part).
