Spelling success! George heads to national final

By Megan Connolly How well do you think you could spell under pressure? Marlborough Boys’ College Year 9 student George Turner competed in the National Spelling Bee semi-finals in Christchurch on Tuesday. And it was knowing how to spell the word ‘aphelion’ that pushed him through to the finals, in November. This is the second year in a row George has made it to the National Spelling Bee finals in Wellington, where last year he finished in second place. Continued on page 2 Marlborough Boys’ College Year 9 student, George Turner competed in the New Zealand Spelling Bee Semi-Finals on Tuesday and has made it into the finals.

George makes it to the NZ spelling bee finals Continued from page 1 George travelled to Christchurch on Tuesday to compete with the other students in the New Zealand semi finals. When asked how he prepares himself for the competition, George says a lot of it comes down to luck. “You don’t know which words you will get, so I read a lot and have a bit of faith. Words I know I split into bits and words I don’t know, I take time to think about them,” George says. The semi-final rounds consisted of a written

round where they had 100 words to practice, then the test would be a mixture of words seen and unseen, an oral component which was all unseen words, and a knock out round. The semi-finals in which George has just competed involved the top 200 students from around the country. Only the top 18 make the finals. “I’m very proud! But also so nervous I was on the edge of my seat!” mum Michelle says. “It’s great to see these kids, who may be more into academia and not so

sporty, get recognition through their passions.” Family in the UK have been sending George messages of support and congratulations, Michelle says. To qualify for the semi-finals George got 97 out of 100 words correct in the classroom spelling bee, which placed him in the top 200 in New Zealand. He’ll go to Wellington for the final in November. Flights and accommodation to Wellington for George and one parent are paid for courtesy Marlborough Boys’ College student George of the Wright Family Turner makes it to the national spelling bee finals Foundation. for the second time in a row.

New room opened at St Marks By Bill McElhinney The Koru room, a new multi-function space at the Blenheim St Marks Addiction Treatment Centre, was opened last Saturday. “We’re so pleased to have this room. We use it every day for meetings, for therapy,” St Marks manager Peter Rijhnen says. “We’ve been busy the past few months moving things around as well as tidying up after the work has been completed.” A container used by staff as an office has also gone and what was a hobbies room has been transformed into an open-plan office. “The staff love their new office space,” Peter says. “We’re all so pleased with the new developments and are grateful for all the

donations we’ve had to make all this possible.” The St Marks site in Main Street was purchased from the Anglican Church in 2003 and the church building is now a reception and living area. Male and female accommodation has been added to the back of the church and a second house has been added to provide extra accommodation and a common room and hobbies room. In 2010 St Marks purchased the adjoining property at 63 Main Street which will be post treatment supportive accommodation, where clients can live in a flatting situation while they seek permanent accommodation. St Marks is the only residential treatment centre for both men and

Giant colon a cancer alert

By Bill McElhinney A giant blow-up colon will be erected in central Blenheim next week to help raise awareness of bowel cancer. Nelson Marlborough Health is launching a National Bowel Screening Programme and organisers hope the giant walk-through colon, complete with cancerous polyps, will help make people more aware of the problem. The inflatable bowel will go up in Liz Davidson Place in central Blenheim on August 16 and 18 from noon to 6pm, and medical staff and bowel cancer survivors will be on hand to help answer questions.

From next Tuesday, August 14, free bowel cancer screening will be offered across Marlborough for people aged between 60 and 74-years-old. A DIY kit is being sent out to thousands of mailboxes in the top of the south to allow people to self-screen for bowel cancer. The test is easy to do and can detect tiny traces of blood present in a small sample of faeces (your bowel motion, or poo), which may be an early warning sign that something is wrong with a person’s bowel. Samples of faeces are sent back through the mail for testing. People with a positive result will

be contacted by their GP to discuss their results and to plan further investigation. Those with a negative result will be recalled for repeat screening after two years. “The screening test will save lives and support our families and communities to be healthy for longer,” NMH general manager of clinical services, Lexie O’Shea, says. “It is especially important for Maori people, because while Maori people have lower rates of bowel cancer, they are more likely to die of bowel cancer than non-Maori. “This is often because they are diagnosed with bowel cancer at

a more advanced stage, so we are asking people to encourage their whanau to do the test when it comes to them in the post,” Lexie says. “I urge everyone eligible to take the test.” New Zealand has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the developed world and the Nelson Marlborough region has the fourth highest rate in the country. A free public seminar will also be held at the ASB Theatre between 6pm and 9pm on August 16.

Award-winning writers Fleur Beale, Tim Tipene and Maria Gill will speak to young readers in Marlborough next week as part of the New Zealand Book Council’s Writers in Schools. Girls’ College librarian Colleen Shipley is co-ordinating the visits from Monday to Wednesday plus one session at the Marlborough Library in Blenheim on Wednesday afternoon. The library session, featuring Tim Tipene, is from 2pm to 3pm on August 15, during the primary school teachers strike, so it is a great option for primary school children that afternoon, she says. It’s suitable for pupils in Year 3 and up. The authors’ visits are already having an impact, she says. The writers visit is largely sponsored by the Marlborough Book Festival. The authors will stay in Marlborough thanks to sponsorship from Rowley Estate Homestead.

Denise paddles in Italian festival By Megan Connolly Local woman Denise Neal from Marlborough’s Dragon Boat team, Simply The Breast, has recently returned from Florence, Italy, where she competed in the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission festival on the Arno River, last month. The festival went for six days and included a pink parade and opening ceremony on the first day followed by two days of racing, finishing with the Sandy Smith Global Finale and a flower ceremony to commemorate those lost to breast cancer. “It was awesome. It was incredible to be amongst women who share the same passion as you,” Denise says. Denise joined the Vienna Pink Dragons International, the only composite team at the festival made up of women from 10 different

nationalities. Despite never having paddled together before the festival, the team managed to finish 37 out of the 129 teams. The festival is held every four years and is a non-competitive participatory Dragon Boating event for breast cancer survivor teams from all over the globe. “Although we all get very competitive once we’re in a boat at the starting line!” Denise says. Dragon boating is a form of post-surgical rehabilitation that also spreads the word that you can still have an active life after a breast cancer diagnosis regardless of your age and ability, Denise says. In 1996 sports medicine physician Dr Don McKenzie challenged the medical thinking that women treated for breast cancer should avoid rigorous upper body exercise

for fear of contracting lymphedema. But it was found that dragon boating resulted in no negative effects because it is a positively challenging upper body activity.

Three of the seven New Zealand breast cancer teams taking part in the event ended up in the top 15, one team finishing second overall. If you want to be involved with

Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards launched The Mayor spoke at the launch of this year’s Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards at the Rangitane Centre in Grovetown last Friday, along with Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage. The awards support businesses, our community, and the environment that belongs to all of us, Marlborough Mayor John Leggett says. The launch marked the opening of the Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards, which are held every two years to showcase businesses or community projects that are good for the environment. The Council has supported them since they began 24 years ago. The Awards are open to any business, community

group or individual in Marlborough. Judges are looking for entrants who protect and enhance the environment and use resources and energy efficiently. Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage praised Marlborough for the awards, which she says are unique in New Zealand. Cawthron Institute Director Dr Di McCarthy said the Cawthron Institute, New Zealand’s largest independent science organisation, is proud to support the awards. The closing date for entries into the Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards is 28 September 2018. www.cmea.org.nz/

How long do we wait

Beaver Road

It’s been well over a month now that we’ve had to weave our way through road cones on the Elevation into Picton. How many more before something is actually done to repair the road or are they waiting for it to miraculously repair itself like a broken bone? It just ain’t gonna happen by itself Transit NZ.

When are the speed bumps going in to help reduce speed along Beaver Road? Good to see 30km limit signs up... be even better if drivers obeyed them!

A&E great!

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to all the staff at A&E Great community we live in for their assistance and persistence in dealing We are blessed to have so many loving people with my partner’s heart attack on Sunday. and groups in our community. Young girl squirting shampoo or whatever on carpet. Farmers market We all know how frustrating items we buy (milk) Great market. etc are all so ‘kiddy proof’ But why inside when sunny? Change your ad. Very cold in that old shed. Why is someone selling unlabelled honey? Shouldn’t all honey have labels with pack address 1080 nets type of honey and weight and a nutrition label? Hi my name is Kereru the wood pigeon and I live in the Pelorus area. l did have lots of friends until DOC set nets to capMako ture us and killed a large amount of my friends. How come the first two Mako games are in Because we normally only have one mate in a Blenheim again? life time we have never recovered. Seems a bit unfair to me. So DOC between 1080 and nets us birds have no Nelson gets the later games when it’s a bit show, your head is still in darkness. warmer and there is a bit more interest in the competition. Just wondering. NZs Rhino problem

A smile costs nothing Hey ladies in Seddon Cafe I stopped for a break at your cafe, three of you working in the shop and not one smile from any of you. Will drive straight on in future.

Stolen fruit To the couple who helped themselves to citrus last Thursday afternoon on our front lawn in Alfred Street, be warned the fruit is still sour/ green and just sprayed. Minimum punishment is at least the belly ache! Don’t do it again please. If you had respect and good manners you would ask permission first!

Marlborough Express Monday 30/7. Tony Orman is absolutely correct with his opinion piece! Council is smitten with other councils and DOC’s opinion on what should be in the Strategy for dealing with pests. If its in MDC’s strategy then the responsibility is theirs. The cost falls on certain sectors of ratepayers. DOC loves that and may only help with some costs if at all. For example:Blaming the possum for bovine Tb in cattle in Marlborough is all very well. If my memory serves me there has only been one tuberculos possum found in Marlborough and that was in the early 80s in the headwaters of the Kekerengu River. But we keep poisoning! Shameful !

Cynophobia I have had roundabout 19,926 meals in the company of dogs. You can probably take off a few here and there for when I was a baby being breast fed and a bit more for work lunches and dates and the like. But the figure would still be well over 19,000. I have heard about Cynophobia but never come across it before and I’m fascinated to see it. How a dog sitting quietly at another table can pee on your leg and get its faeces in your mouth... well it must have been trained by Dynamo! It’s sad too, to see the vehemence that goes along with the cynophobic person, on the subject of sharing any space wth a dog. They really miss out on some of lifes greatest gifts. Oh my goodness I can’t believe the attitude and comments of the person who thinks if dogs are allowed in cafes they will pee on your leg soaking your socks and pooing. You have absolutely no idea about dog behaviour do you. Dogs are highly intelligent and provide companionship, service to the blind and other handicapped people, not to mention rescuing people in disasters. Oh and there is no way they would want to go inside a cafe to the toilet they are trained to go outside.

Thank you Totally agree with texter the Blenheim Police, Fire service and Ambulance do a fabulous job and they don’t get enough credit especially the Police with what they have to put up with some times. I also say fantastic job to you amazing people and thank you.

Cutting out plastic I absolutely LOVE that supermarkets are doing away with single-use plastic carrier bags, what a fantastic step towards reducing our plastic usage. I was however even more impressed to receive an email from Countdown this week saying all online orders will be packed into paper bags, effectively taking around 350 million plastic bags our of circulation each year! As I do most of my grocery shopping online, I think this is a fantastic idea, so well done to all the businesses introducing eco-friendly alternatives.

Thanks Thanks Colin and the team at Instant Auto for finding and repairing the all evasive problem with my car. Great work and really happy with the price too.

Disappointing Good idea of the council for ratepayers to put cost of a new fire onto their rates, particularly for those on a limited budget, but remember to factor in the interest cost. Bad idea the purchase and installation can only be through one particular company. Smacks of an ‘old boys network’, no competition re costs.

Took our visiting friends to a popular cellar door last Saturday. Well done Mike and team Great environment and lovely staff, however I We took our workers out for breakfast at CBD. was told the only red available for tasting was a Fantastic meal, service and friendly staff. Jennifer Reeve, also known as Queen Elizabeth when she’s in full costume, exercising at New World Blenheim supermarket for fundraising.

Fitness in heels and tiara

By Celeste Alexander “If exercise is good enough for the queen, it’s good enough for all of us,” New World Blenheim staff joked on Tuesday morning as they supported their staff member Jennifer Reeve, aka Queen Elizabeth during a fundraising fitness drive. Jennifer, who works as a florist at New World Blenheim, was certainly turning heads as she gracefully stepped up onto a cross trainer, in her heels, gown, tiara and royal ensemble. “It’s not as easy as it looks… I’m getting worn out already,” she laughs. She has become quite well known for her very convincing performance as Queen

Elizabeth over the past two years and is a hit with customers. She is one of several staff who will be exercising on the cross trainer in public, near the entrance of the supermarket to raise money for different local charities. It’s all part of a 28 day fitness challenge that New World Supermarkets are promoting. The public can make donations in support of the staff members during their cross trainer fitness sessions which then are donated. This week funds went to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, next week will be Foster Hope Marlborough and the following week to Hospice Marlborough.

ON NOW! I WEAR MY BIRTHDAY SUIT EVERYDAY.

Sun deliverer Robert loved a chat By Bill McElhinney Sun readers will remember with fondness long-time Sun newspaper deliverer Robert Austin. Robert passed away unexpectedly at home recently, probably because of an undiagnosed heart condition, his brother, Braden, says. “Robert enjoyed delivering papers and other mail items to Blenheim residents and having the odd chat with them,” Braden says. “Our Dad, Roger, my sister, Helen, and I would like to thank everyone who took the time, however short or long, to share a sunny Marlborough conversation with Robert.” Robert led a relatively simple life and always made time for others, Braden says. “Robert enjoyed wearing out many bicycles over the years and, although we understand it was an undiagnosed heart condition that took him from us too soon, he would have been otherwise extremely fit,” Braden says. The family moved to Blenheim, from Palmerston North, in February 1975, when Robert was five.

Robert Austin had delivered the paper since the Blenheim Sun started business.

Robert started at Witherlea School that year and then attended Bohally Intermediate, followed by Marlborough Boys’ College. “Although he never had any children of his own, Robert was a loving uncle to James, Jarad, Guy, Natalie and Leoni,” Braden says. A memorial service for Robert was held at The Elim Centre yesterday.

Rail safety week Marlborough drivers and pedestrians are being reminded to remain vigilant around railway tracks as more trains come into service between Picton and Christchurch in the coming months. The warning comes from the national rail safety advocacy group TrackSAFE NZ, ahead of Rail Safety Week on August 13-19. KiwiRail data shows that in the past year there have been three near misses at level crossings in the Marlborough region. One was at the Horton Street level crossing and two at the Hunter Road level crossing where the vehicles crossed through the flashing lights and bells, in front of shunt locomotives. There was one non-injury collision where a vehicle was hit by a train when it was parked too close to the tracks. Megan Drayton from TrackSAFE NZ says research has shown people driving cars can be complacent when they cross railway tracks often, and may not always look for

trains simply because they do not expect to see them. “People should always expect trains at any time of the day or night,” Megan says. “We particularly recommend that people in the Marlborough Region remain vigilant around railway tracks, as more trains come into service in the coming months between Picton and Christchurch.” TrackSAFE NZ encourages everyone to obey the warning signs at level crossings and always wait for a train to pass before crossing the tracks. “If there is a Stop sign at a level crossing in a rural area, motorists must stop and look for trains before passing,” Megan says. “At level crossings in urban areas, pedestrians should always stay alert and always look right and left for trains.” “We discourage the use of headphones or mobile phones around railway tracks as they can prove to be a huge distraction.”

Cawthron Institute director Dr Di McCarthy, Marlborough mayor John Leggett, Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage, and awards chairman Peter Jerram at the environment awards launch last Friday.

Awards raise awareness of protecting environment By Bill McElhinney Dog Point Vineyard, an organic vineyard that demonstrated conservation with a commercial edge, was the supreme winner in the 2017 Cawthron Marlborough Environment awards. Entries are now open for the 2018/19 awards, held every two years to showcase businesses or community projects that are good for the environment. The awards have been running for 20 years, during which time 246 organisations have entered. For many, entering the Environment Awards makes them look at their operations through a fresh set of eyes and interacting with the expert judges is a learning experience. “A healthy environment is the basis of a healthy economy and human health and wellbeing,” Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage said at the launch of the 2018-19 awards on Friday at the Rangitane Cultural Centre, Grovetown. The Minister commended the Marlborough District Council and the Cawthron Institute for supporting the awards. “The awards encourage people to protect

nature, use land and water sustainably and help strengthen connections across the community,” Eugenie says. The council has supported the awards since they started in 1997, Mayor John Leggett says. He is encouraging businesses and community groups to share their experience in looking after our land and water and using resources and energy efficiently. “Achieving the balance between protecting and using the environment is an important message to get out to Marlborough and the rest of New Zealand,” John says. There are seven award categories – marine, farming, forestry, wine industry, landscape and habitat enhancement, community innovation and business innovation.  If you could donate $1m to any charity who would you choose and why? I would want to see ‘Hope House’ operating again - a wonderful Marlborough facility for teenage pregnant women because Blenheim has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates.  When you have a bad day, what do you do to feel better? Apart from praying, I love getting on my bike and going for a long bike ride.

gardening this week with Wally Richards

It’s all starting to happen in August Daylight hours are extending, spring bulbs are starting to flower, dormant roses and trees are starting to move and the weather is fairly mild, as it has been for most of the winter. A word of caution: you can never tell whether a cold snap will take place in the next couple of months. This means don’t plant out warmth loving plants unless they are well protected. I always like to get an early start with a tomato or two and if you lose them there is not much lost, but if they are not damaged by late frosts then you have a very early start. Using my hydro flow System I had the privilege of eating the first ripe tomatoes this week from plants started in April. They are in a glasshouse and they have grown well though the winter, producing a number of trusses of fruit which are slowly ripening. This amazing way of growing plants such as tomatoes, cucum-

bers, capsicum, egg plants etc can be used by people in retirement villages, apartments and flats who do not have room to garden. Once set up all you have to do is fill the holding tank with the special plant food as needed, and pick the fruit. An email from a lady this week asks: Could you please tell me how to prepare my dahlias. Every year they start flowering beautifully and then suddenly all the buds start to go rotten, or only open part way. My reply: I presume you lift the tubers? The correct way to grow is not to plant the tuber but to layer them in a tray of sand or potting mix. Once there are spouts, lift the tuber and pare off the sprouts, taking a bit of the tuber and the roots that have developed. You plant these, not the tuber. If during the season the flowers start to get damaged, then spray the plants and flowers with condys crystals and later on with Perkfec-

tion. See how that goes. If you have not lifted your dahlias, then keep an eye on them and when they have produced new growth you can then lift them and do the above. Freshen up the soil with blood and bone plus sheep manure pellets, and then plant some shoots that you have pared off the old tuber. Strawberries will be starting to move and so a two weekly spray of Mycorrcin can be started now. This will increase the amount of fruit you pick during the season by 200 to 400 per cent. I took some young strawberry runners and popped one into each corner of the hydro flow containers with a tomato seedling in the centre. As they are in a glasshouse the plants have started flowering early and it will be interesting to see how big the fruit will get in the system. Under planting of containers is a good way to use as much growing

space as possible. On my 100 litre (cut in half 200 litre drums) that I am growing fruit trees in, I under plant them with parsley, silver beet, radish, lettuce etc. Why waste that space? I see my garlic is up and away showing nice clean foliage. I have sprayed them a couple of times with liquid sulphur with potassium permanganate and Raingard added to help prevent that garlic rust from ruining the crop. Soon I will spray the leaves with Vaporgard to further protect them. Now is a great time to get early potatoes in if you have the room,

as you can have them mature in November before the psyllids get going in the summer and ruin later planted crops. Leaves on stone fruit trees will be starting to emerge soon and then curly leaf will strike. Start a seven to 10 day spray programme using a quarter of of a teaspoon of potassium permanganate per litre of water with 1 mil of Raingard added to each litre of spray. Spray foliage, trunk and soil. While doing that, also include your roses and garlic. Problems ring me at 0800 466464.

Cantabs do right by champion Crusaders Hats off to the people of Canterbury for their support of the Super Rugby champion Crusaders on Saturday night. Cantabrians have received plenty of criticism for not filling their pop-up stadium over the past five years but Saturday’s 38-19 win over the bride’s maid Lions showed they will come out if the product is worth it. A sellout of 19,500 people had the place rocking, I was there and enjoyed elements of my childhood in the buzz and atmosphere at the game. Hopefully that came across on television because the crowd was supportive, vocal and passionate to their own team and respectful to the Lions who lost their third consecutive final.

Make no mistake, the stadium experience is poor and not worth the $82.50 for a second tier ticket that I paid to be there. It was my first game at the stadium this year and I’m a fully eye-patched member of the crusade. The stadium is cramped, cold and clunky. It’s easy for people in other cities to question Cantabrian support for their team but, as a big fan of all teams, there is competition for the entertainment dollar and there’s not much value in a rugby game in the middle of winter in that stadium. The atmosphere on Saturday night was decent by Kiwi standards. Generally, unless we are intoxicated, Kiwi

crowds tend to sit on their hands and not do much unless their team does something worth getting vocal about. We aren’t a country of loud and proud cheer sections, perhaps our lineage to England runs deep. However Crusaders fans chanted for their team on defence, cheered when they were hot on attack and drowned out the final siren with a “back to back” chant. It was well deserved for a team that looked likely to win the competition on paper nine months before it started and never looked likely to lose that favourites tag once the season began. So for one week, lay off us Cantabs - we supported the right way and celebrated in great style.

far you can push yourself. The end goal is very exciting and I can’t wait to put on a show for everyone. The support from my sponsors is amazing. Harcourts backed me as soon as I showed interest. Having Dad also working there gives me that extra push to put in the work to make Mark, Chris and everyone else that I shared a table with last year proud. Bring on September 29!

Sponsor - Harcourts ticipating in this if I ever got the chance... and look where we are! I love supporting Life Ed because I remember the Bohally days, getting to leave class to go and hang out with Harold. It’s so cool that I can do something to give back and support the future generation of kids. I’m absolutely loving the physical and mental challenges that I’m having to work through every week! It’s amazing to see how
