Selmes Garden Trust needs volunteers Continued from page 1 Kyann started out as a volunteer at the centre and for the past four years has been a part-time employee, working Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 2.30pm. Kyann is one of 12 disability staff employed at the centre, which was established in 2008 to provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities within the Marlborough region. The Selmes Community Trust was established by retired Blenheim lawyer John Lundon, Tony Oberdries and the late Mick Murphy. Blenheim-born Christchurch businessman Greg Tomlinson donated the 1.2ha block of land on Battys Rd to the Trust. The Trust employees work alongside volunteer staff without disabilities, who help oversee the day-to-day running of the centre.

“The Trust has been active in the Marlborough community for 10 years and during this time we’ve provided employment for people with disabilities and made a positive impact on the lives of these employees and their families,” trustee Dave Robinson says. “Everyone involved during this past decade should be proud of their part in this,” Dave says. However, the trust now faces the challenge of meeting the cost of the rising minimum wage, and is having to restructure to keep going. “We will lose some of our able part-time workers,” Dave says. “These people come in for three to four hours a day to help guide the disabled workers. “What we need to keep going are volunteers who will come in and help us with

this work. “We are a seven-day-aweek operation, so it would be great to have a pool of about 20 people who could come in on a part-time basis. “We’re busiest in the mornings. “Selmes provides a huge boost for the self-esteem and worth of all who work here. It enables everyone to feel ‘valued’. “My hope is that we can get a sustainable network of volunteers who can work among the staff with disabilities and just get some more people at the centre to help share the load. “It’s what we’re here for after all. “You could provide support in the nursery, in the retail shop or with administration. We have a long list of jobs,” Dave says. If you would be interested in donating a few hours a

Pesticides to be phased out Huge wildfires raging out of control in British Columbia.

Mitre 10 New Zealand announced on Monday that products containing neonicotinoids will be phased out of its 82 stores from 1 November 2018. Pesticides containing the neonicotinoids are believed to contribute to bee decline: imidacloprid, thiacloprid and clothianidin.

Lotto helps CAB Corporal Tony Morris is one of six New Zealand Defence Force firefighters helping combat the massive wildfires raging in British Columbia, Canada.

Firefighters answer the call By Bill McElhinney Woodbourne firefighter Corporal Tony Morris has joined other Marlborough firefighters in the battle to contain the massive wildfires raging in British Columbia. Tony, a senior firefighter at the Royal New Zealand Air Force Base Woodbourne, is one of six New Zealand Defence Force firefighters sent to help contain hundreds of huge wildfires raging out of control in Castlegar, a regional trade and transportation centre in British Columbia. The Marlborough firefighters include deputy principal rural fire officer Rob Horsenail and firefighters Mark Hodges, Steve

Smith and Peter Selby, who have all volunteered to help in the international relief effort. Two other Marlborough firefighters, Chris Hayles and Bill Hodson left earlier to help in British Columbia. Three other defence force firefighters are supporting the multinational effort to battle the fires in the northwestern part of the United States, where a state of emergency has been declared. Tony was looking forward to contributing to the effort to contain the fires. The deployment to Canada, which is expected to be for at least a month, is his first for an opera-

tion overseas since he became a firefighter in 2006. “We like to help out,” Tony says. “We are highly trained in all aspects of firefighting, have the skills required, and will do our best to make a difference. “It’s a great opportunity for me to learn new techniques, and gain experience that I can share with other personnel upon my return.” Tony served in the New Zealand Army’s logistics unit for eight years until 2001. He enlisted in the RNZAF in 2005, after being encouraged by a friend who was a helicopter loadmaster in the RNZAF’s No.3 Squadron.

“My father was a firefighter in Whanganui for 28 years, so he was very proud when I decided to follow in his footsteps. “His work also instilled in me a public service mindset,” he said. “The other thing that I like about the firefighting trade is that we are a very close-knit team. “You can’t put out a fire on your own – you have to trust the person you are working with.” The fire crews will work for 14-days straight and then have two rest days. In Canada, authorities have recorded 1085 wildfires since the fire season began on April 1, burning more than 700 square kilometres of woodland.

A $5000 grant from the Lottery Grants Board is a big help for the Marlborough Citizens Advice Bureau, CAB publicity officer Alan McEvoy says. “We are very grateful for the support we receive from this group and especially from the many local people who play Lotto. “We’d like to say ‘thank you’ to them all!” Alan says.

Latest on earthquakes Scientists say the 2016 KaikouraHurunui earthquake sequence was one of the most complex in history, with more than 20 different faults shifting, and Marlborough residents are being invited to a public meeting to hear more about the latest earthquake research findings. The meeting is on Wednesday, August 29, at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim. Doors open at 5.30pm, with speakers starting at 6.30pm. Entry is by gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to the New Zealand Red Cross.

Soggy yard solution in sight

By Bill McElhinney A waterlogged yard causing problems for Marlborough Riding for Disabled is going to get fixed, much to the delight of RDA manager Helena van Velthooven. The yard floods every time it rains and the water never completely drains away. “It’s a lake after the rain and we can’t get access to our stables,” Helena says. The yard problem prompted four Blenheim women to organise a fundraiser recently with all proceeds going to the RDA. The Moving and Grooving day featured Nia dance, yoga, tai chi/qigong and Pilates with Corinne McBride, Wendy Diack, Nancy Sherwood and Kirsty Chalmers. “It was a great success,” Corrine says, “and we raised $1622 for the RDA. “We want to thank everyone who supported us, and Whitney Street School for letting us use their hall.”

Anne Escalle, who has a youngster that attends RDA, went to the fundraiser and really enjoyed it. “We were smiling all the time,” Anne says. “It was energising but relaxing as well.” A story in The Sun about the RDA flooding and the fundraiser has prompted a generous response from local firms, who have offered to come and excavate the yard and fix the drainage problems. “I couldn’t believe it,” Helena says. “It could cost $10,000 to fix this problem but these people are going to come and do it for us!” TC Nicholls, Simcox Construction, Downer and Norm Crafar will all pitch in to repair the yard, and plan to start work soon. The money raised by Corrine and her friends will go towards replacing roof guttering on the RDA building, which will help ease the flooding problem, Helena says.

Helena van Velthooven, Corrine McBride and Anne Escalle say the $1622 raised at a Moving and Grooving day will help fix the yard flooding at Riding for Disabled.

Leisure marchers step out for fun, fitness and friendship By Megan Connolly A local marching group, Fun Seekers Leisure Marchers Marlborough, have been marching for 24 years under the watchful eye of coach Val Alcorn. The Leisure Marchers is a group of women, mainly former marchers, who love the sport and want to come back without the competitive aspect, Val says. “It’s about fun, fitness and friendship,” Val says. The Leisure Marchers are gearing up their fundraising

efforts for a competition in Gore in October, a Top of the South competition in February and The Nationals in Hamilton in March. Keep an eye out for the sausage sizzles at Bunnings and the other fundraising activities the Leisure Marchers have coming up. Marching was first introduced into New Zealand in the 1930s as a nationwide move for a larger focus on team sports. “It’s very social,” Val says.

The marchers have five minutes on the field and march to 120 beats per minute, which is around 600 beats for the time they are on the field. The Leisure Marchers emphasise friendship and the fun that comes with a team sport. The group is for those aged 40 plus, with marching experience preferred but not required. “We all support each other and it’s very social,” Val says. “I have always come back to it.”

Val has been marching here in Marlborough since she was seven years old and has been coaching her own team since she was 16. “If anyone is interested they should come along and have a look,” Val says. The group practises every Wednesday evening from 5.30pm to 7pm at the Nurses Recreation Hall. For more information or if want to be a Coach of the Leisure Marchers, Val Alcorn, part of the team contact Val on sporting the club colours of blue and fluoro green. 5729795.

Young stars shine in Southern Jam By Bill McElhinney A new wave of young South Island musical talent put on a top show in the ASB Theatre, Blenheim, on Saturday night. An almost full theatre crowd was wonderfully entertained by the young musicians who had travelled to Blenheim from all around the South Island to take part in the annual Southern Jam Jazz Festival. Despite a busy week of performances the youngsters exuded plenty of energy and exuberance, even the combined colleges group from Invercargill who had endured some serious travel hassles to get to the festival. The evening showcased pieces from all participating schools and featured the All-Stars Band, made up of from the top young musicians from this year’s competition. Once again there was a wide

range of music ranging from traditional jazz and swing to Latin beats and even several original compositions. Performers from Marlborough colleges shone again, Jonty Zydenbos winning the Jan and Malcolm Aitken Award for the most outstanding musician and the Interislander Award for the best original composition and the Massey University Award for most outstanding musician on a non-traditional jazz instrument going to Samuel Lee from Marlborough Boys’ College. “Once again it was a very successful event,” Katrina Lang from Marlborough 4fun says, organisers of the event. “We have had a fabulous week of jazz out at all the venues and the students have stepped the calibre up yet again, finishing with a fantastic concert on Saturday night.

A feast of music this weekend By Bill McElhinney Blenheim music lovers are in for a treat with the New Zealand String Quartet and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra performing here later this week. The internationally acclaimed String Quartet is returning to the Treehouse at Cloudy Bay Vineyard to play two concerts on Sunday, one at 1pm and one at 5pm. “Our Cloudy Bay concerts are always the first to sell out on our nationwide tours,” the Quartet’s manager, Christine Argyle says. “I think it’s the lovely, intimate setting and the chance to enjoy fine music with a glass of fine wine that makes these concerts so popular.” Established in 1987, the New Zealand String Quartet has built

an international reputation for its imaginative programming and for its powerful connection with audiences of all kinds. The Symphony Orchestra will be playing in the ASB Theatre on Friday with Grammy Award- winning violinist Augustin Hadelich. Over the past decade the Italian-born 34-year-old has entered the upper echelon of the violin world and is regarded as a must-see virtuoso. Augustin has been praised for his performances of key works from the violin repertoire and in a Beethoven and Brahms tour is playing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto – the only violin concerto written by the great composer.

How’s this for drumming up support? Opposition leader Simon Bridges was in Blenheim last week and held a meeting at The Wesley Centre, attended by around 150 people. The meeting followed on from Southern Jam performance and Simon did an impromptu jam on the drums with the boys from Christ’s College prior to the meeting starting.

Age 14 is probably a good age. They can make better choices.

About 14. By then they’re ready and the parent would be able to supervise it. It’s part of our world so we can’t avoid it.

I’d say 12 would be the minimum but 14 is probably a good age for them to be able to handle it.

If you can teach them how to deal with what’s online and not to trust everything they read, maybe 13 or 14. It’s how we connect and keep in touch.

Highschool, they’re a bit more mature. There’s so much else they could be doing when they’re younger.

14 or 15. They’re more mature and thinking about it. Any earlier and it’s not right.

Grove bridge/ bypass Dear Ed Good grief! What shortsighted, impractical thinking from the mayor re Grove Bridge. Most traffic over the bridge is local he said. Of course it is. But it is the truck traffic, (I repeat truck) that with no fault of theirs, clogs the traffic flow on the bridge and at roundabouts. The bypass would be primarily a truck bypass. Council should be beating a path to (a) local MP in the faint hope he will listen or better (b) to Ministers of Transport and Regional government. The truckies would welcome a bypass, so would locals. Then assess Grove bridge. Remember the Grove bridge has an advantage. It slows 100 km/hour traffic from Picton to 50 km/hr on entering Blenheim. Cost of bypass is probably under $40 m unless a mess is made like unnecessary Spring Creek Roundabout. Add that $6 million, plus ridiculous highway barriers ($8 m?), plus purposeless Lions Back “improvements” $8 m would have gone a long way towards truck bypass cost. Percy Parker Blenheim W h e n o n ly t h e b e s t W i l l d o !

Great work gardeners! Dear Ed, I would like to say a massive thank you to the gardeners at Pollard Park and Seymour Square for all the hard work they do to keep Blenheim looking bright and beautiful. I like big pieces of art work on the land. They work so hard in these cold, frosty mornings we’ve been having and in the wind and rain and then when it’s summer in the hot, beating sun. Well done team. You are a real asset to Blenheim. Thank you. Alison Smith Marlborough District Council gardener Rachel Hutchinson Blenheim at Pollard Park on Monday.

No wallabies around here Dear Ed, Is there something in the Marlborough District Council’s taps that makes people hallucinate? I am referring to an item on the internet about the Marlborough District Council’s pest management policy and in particular that wallabies are a major pest. As an outdoorsman and a former resident in the Top of the South I know there are no wallabies in Marlborough, or indeed Nelson. Top of the South hunters may travel to South Canterbury to shoot wallaby. I believe one dead wallaby was found on the state highway near St Arnaud. It very probably fell off a returning hunter’s truck. Wallabies were liberated 150 years ago in the Hunter Hills, South Canterbury. In a century and a half, they have spread little, only having just crossed the Waitaki River. A pest? But bureaucrats must keep their jobs intact and an odd pest imagined will keep salaries going via ratepayer kindness. It reminds me of the fairy tale ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes.’ C Graham Waikato

By community constable Russ Smith Police receive a constant commentary from people in all sectors of our community about suspicious activity that they suspect is drug-related. Often it relates to a house where there are dozens of visitors who only stay a few minutes before leaving, or visitors meeting a resident in a driveway after dark and small packages being exchanged. This type of activity isn’t just related to properties in towns. The Police also hear about suspicious activity and apparent addiction-fuelled behaviour in rural areas too. The Police are an information-based organisation and work most efficiently

when the partnership between community and Police is strong. If people are regularly telling the Police about what they see and hear which is of concern, it helps to fit the pieces of the puzzle together and can lead to evidence that allows Police to act. The Police can be very effective against drug dealers and organised crime groups if everyone takes responsibility and contacts Police with information that may help. You can speak to a Policeman you know, you can pass information via private message to the Police Facebook page, or you can contact Crimestoppers completely anonymously on 0800555111.

His boxes are probably his most popular pieces, and are sold throughout NZ and around the world. He has had commissions from as far away as the Middle East and overseas visitors buy his pieces “to take something special from New Zealand home with them.” Steve is a member of the Artists of Marlborough and exhibits his work in galleries throughout New Zealand.

Education Affordable Excellence Nelson College for Girls offers high quality, affordable education for young women in a very supportive environment. Our Boarding Hostel, Clarice Johnstone House, is a very important part of this. It offers excellent accommodation for up to 150 students, from New Zealand and overseas. This accommodation provides quality for our young women but is priced competitively. For many of our boarders, there are significant opportunities for them to be involved in sporting and cultural activities that would not otherwise be available to them. Our boarding students are part of a very large family, proactively supported by our senior students through a wide variety of student led activities. Nelson College for Girls has a strong house system and all of our boarders are members of the same house, Whangamoa. They are passionate participants in all house activities in the school and revel in the ‘purple’ house succeeding well. Our Year 9 – 12 students live in Clarice Johnstone House while our Year 13 students are in the Levels building. This modern accommodation provides them with a more inde-

pendent living experience, while still ensuring our most senior students play a pivotal role in creating the family atmosphere of the boarding community. Our boarders enjoy academic success, make lifelong friendships and enjoy strong connections within the school and its community. Our vision is to “educate and empower young women”. The latest ERO report describes our students as “purposeful, responsible and engaged learners.” A wide range of subjects is offered and the College’s students gain significant success in NCEA, with many attaining Merit and Excellence endorsements.

At the beginning of 2018 we entered in to an exciting phase in our journey to maximise the academic and social needs of each of our students. The introduction of mentoring supports the development of building strong relationships between year levels and with staff, further enhancing a nurturing and caring school environment. This, along with quality learning programmes, ensures that our girls are given the opportunity to be the very best that they can be. For more information please contact CJ House on 03 548 1332. Education Zero fees at popular SIT Softly spoken Isaiah is not the ‘gym bunny’ type you might imagine. Instead, he comes across as intelligent and passionate about the field he has chosen to study. Having completed a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise and now following it up with postgraduate study leading into the Master of Applied Health Sciences (Wellness and Rehabilitation), Isaiah harbours the goal of one day opening a rehabilitation gym in his home town of Nelson, or perhaps Wellington. “I enjoy the small class sizes at Southern Institute of Technology (SIT). It’s more hands on, you get to know your lecturers and get a lot of one-on-one learning time.” Isaiah has always enjoyed sports but since his studies he has relished discovering more about how the body

GET ON THE WATER

& LEARN WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW With the Marlborough Harbour Master and Coastguard

Understanding today’s strike Today, primary teachers and principals are striking across Marlborough in an effort to send a strong message to the Government and demand change. Primary teachers have not taken industrial action in New Zealand since 1994. For those who do not understand the strike action, here are some facts about the strike and the message teachers and principals are sending. Primary school teachers and principals, members of NZEI Te Riu Roa (NZEI), overwhelmingly voted on July 3 in favour of a three-hour work stoppage on 15 August. After further discussions it was decided to extend the strike to a full day. Why are we striking? (According to NZEI Te Riu Roa- members from every community in NZ, leading and advocating for quality public education) Both primary teachers and principals are determined to send a strong message to the Government and

demand change so our students can have a teacher in every classroom, the learning support they need and teachers are recognised as the professionals they are. Both primary teachers and principals feel the Ministry of Education’s June offers did not address workload issues, extra learning support or ways to stem the growing crisis in recruiting and retaining teachers. What we want: • Significant pay increases for teachers and principals over the course of the agreement. • Significant increases to staffing available to all schools to support leaders, classroom teachers and teachers working with students with additional learning needs. • Fix existing pay arrangements for principals • Fix existing relativity issues • Create meaningful new career options for teachers and principals - we want to make teaching an attractive and valued profession What does this mean for children

and whanau? Teachers and principals appreciate the inconvenience of strike action on some families. Members do not take the decision lightly. Primary teachers have not taken industrial action in New Zealand since 1994 and the fact that we are taking such a step now shows the grave concerns we have for the future of quality public education. The government needs to take courageous steps now!

North-South face off

The Marlborough Indoor Bowls Association recently hosted the North Island touring team in Blenheim at the Simcox Stadium for the biennial fixture between the Top of the South team and the North Island team. The Top of the South team is made up of representatives of the Marlborough, Nelson and Golden Bay-Motueka associations. The North Island team arrived in Blenheim hav-

Top of the South fought back strongly in the third and final set, with the men’s pairs and triples, skipped by Marlborough’s Steven Grant, and the women’s fours winning their games. Overall, North Island managed to maintain their unbeaten 2018 tour record with a 35-13 win on the night. Individual results: Women’s singles: Mary Jordan (ToS) v Jessie Moffat (NI)

Red team - Riki Winitana Sponsor - NZ Home Loans My name is Riki Winitana and I am 36 years old. I am married to Lisa and we have two sons, as well as our niece at home. I have been interested in boxing since I was young, as my dad was a boxer. It wasn’t until Mike Newton (red team trainer) moved in next door and set up his first gym that I decided to give it a go. Since then my sons and niece have also joined Mike’s club, Smack Fitness. Last year we watched the fights

and a mate suggested that I should give it a go in 2018. At the time I was injured, so this has been great motivation to get back to full fitness. With both of my sons at primary school, and my wife being a teacher, I understand the importance of the Life Education Trust. Getting in the ring is a great opportunity to support Life Education Marlborough. I am loving the physicality of the training. Mike pushes us hard

but is a great motivator. Boxing is hugely different from my rugby background, but I am enjoying the challenge of learning a new sport. I have been fortunate enough to have been sponsored by Phil and Anna Muir from New Zealand Home Loans. I really appreciate the contribution that they have made to support me for this event. I have always been taught that no one remembers second place, so game on!

The Sun will be profiling each Fight For Life competitor in the lead up to the big event on September 29.
