Red for fun!

By Megan Connolly “To age disgracefully and with fun is the motto of The Red Hat Society. And what better way to celebrate these words than to ride into a royal succession lunch on a motorcycle! It was a sea of red hats and purple as the ladies of Blenheim Red Hat Society gathered at Blenheim cafe and restaurant Saveur last week for their royal succession. Helen Winder and Louise Pearce rode in on a motorcycle, then Helen passed the mantle of Queen of Blenheim Red Hat Society on to Louise. Continued on page 2 Long reigning Queen of The Red Hat Society, Helen Winder, hands over her title to new Queen Louise Pearce.

Red Hatters enjoy fun and laughter together The Red Hat Society is an international organisation that empowers and encourages women over the age of 50 to socialise and “live out their lives disgracefully” while wearing their signature red hats and purple clothing in public. The name of their society comes from the opening line of a poem called Warning, written in 1961 by English poet Jenny Joseph. The opening line is: “When I am an old woman I shall wear purple, with a red hat which doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me.” It has inspired thousands of women to wear purple and red, even though Jenny hated the colour on herself. Rotarians tidy up school gardens By Bill McElhinney Rotary Blenheim members took up the challenge last week to make a start refreshing the community gardens at Mayfield School. Members spent a good few hours weeding, trimming pruning and turning soil to make a dent in the abundant overgrowth, the results of a great growing season. Two truck-loads of refuse were taken to the tip by member Brian Simpson, the result of the work of the 10 members who helped during the morning. The pupils at Mayfield School would notice a big change when they returned this week for the next term. They can now start planting new

seeds and seedlings for harvesting later in the year. Hunters Wines staff helped with the pruning of vines and advised on the best way to free up garden space to accommodate new plantings and staff from Sowmans also came to help. The Rotarians are anticipating being able to follow up again at a later time to ensure the gardens continue to be enjoyed, just one of the many local community projects that Rotarians are renowned for. The club thanked Mayfield Principal David Nott for allowing Rotary Blenheim to contribute to the positive learning environment at the school.

Rotary Blenheim members turned out to tidy up the community gardens at Mayfield School: Marion Rowe, foreground, Alastair Hebberd, left, and Katie Laing from Hunters Wines.

Redwood power outage The failure of a high voltage switch on a power pole in Weld St cut power to 946 Marlborough Lines customers on Tuesday morning. “A cracked insulator caused the switch to cut out at 10.27am,” Marlborough Lines operations manager Warner Nichol says. “We had power restored to the majority of customers just over half an hour later. The rest had the power back after another hour.” Marlborough Lines will have to have a power outage in the area at some time in the future in order to make more permanent repairs, Warner says.

More grass, better lighting: CBD upgrade gets under way By Bill McElhinney More grass, better lighting, phone charging stations and an upgraded power supply for outdoor events – it’s all happening at the Market Place in central Blenheim. Its part of the work funded by the Marlborough District Council and agreed with the Blenheim Business Association and follows on from the revamp of Bythell Place, the pop-up parks and the corten steel planters which have generated positive feedback about Market Place. New raised lawn and garden areas are being installed on the

north side of Market Place and new LED spotlighting will be installed. The work is being done during the quieter winter months with the aim of having it all done by spring, so Market Place is ready for the markets and events that are held in the town centre. The $200,000 revamp includes enhanced and enlarged grass pods with sloping sides which will be easier to get on to and will provide a bigger area for the all-weather bean bags that come out in the summer. “The raised grass pods already

there looked nice but weren’t very practical,” Blenheim Business Association chair Lynette Rayner says. “You could sit around the edges of them, but we want people to actually be able to get on them. “In summer it will give people a place to come and be, and relax and sit. “It just makes the whole area more inviting and usable,” Lynette says. The work, which is expected to take about another seven weeks, also includes upgrading the infrastructure in the area.

“What the public won’t see are the upgrades to the power supply, which we need to do for the many outdoor events held there over the summer. “That and the improved lighting will greatly enhance the area.” The renovations are part of a bigger plan to refresh Blenheim’s central business district, Lynette says. The creation of six interactive sites around town, part of a bigger plan for Blenheim, will kick off before the end of the year.

Kids jump at the chance to Jam By Bill McElhinney The opportunity to give youngsters leadership skills, confidence, fitness and fun prompted Springlands School teachers Courtney Haley and Stacey Grainger to promote Jump Jam in Marlborough. “It gets kids interacting with others in a good way and promotes fitness and fun,” Courtney says. “We saw that the Jump Jam Extravaganza was being held in Timaru, and thought it would be great if we could bring it to Blenheim.” Created by the first ever double world aerobic champion and eight-time New Zealand aerobic champion Brett Fairweather, Jump Jam is a fun fusion of dance and fitness based on aerobic exercise, The programme has been adopted by more than 90 per cent of primary schools across the country and is also used in Singapore, Australia and other international schools. Brett says it is geared to challenge fundamental movement skills, increase fitness, develop student leadership and motivate pupils to move and enjoy exercise. There are team categories for children Years 1 through to 8, and costumes and themes are encouraged. Teams start out using routines provided by Jump Jam, with older teams combining those routines with their own choreography or completely creating their own. Jump Jam competitions are inter-schools events that provide schools with the opportunity to showcase their students and school in Jump Jam, regionally, nationally and internationally, with the chance for television and media exposure and regional and national championship titles. “We contacted Brett and he agreed to have Jump Jam Extravaganza in Blenheim if we could get 10 teams,” Courtney says. “So we put the word around Marlborough schools and we got 25 teams!”

Some schools were already doing Jump Jam, Courtney says. “But we wanted to bring the community together and that’s what happened. “We staged a Jump Jam competition at Bohally and the school hall was packed.

“Each team chose their own routine to learn and a song to perform to. It was a great event, and hopefully we’ll do it again next year.” The top five results from the Blenheim Strictly Jump Jam. Year 1-4: Witherlea School 1; Springlands

School 2; Renwick Primary 3; Redwoodtown School 4; Renwick Primary 5. Year 4-8: Springlands School 1; Witherlea School 2; Renwick Primary 3; Bohally Intermediate 4; Springlands School 5.

Career change from Blenheim Toyota teacher to funeral director By Celeste Alexander From early childhood teacher, to stay at home mum and home educator, to swim instructor then to teacher aid, it’s evident that Paula Aires was destined to be working with people. So it’s no surprise that Paula has decided on a whole new career path, and has joined the Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors team. In May Paula began her role as assistant funeral director and is also training to be an embalmer. She agrees that it’s quite a different role to what she’s done before, and yet it’s similar in the way she continues to work alongside people. “My husband and I have two teenage daughters and it was when they both reached their senior years at college that I sat back and really started thinking about what I wanted,” she says. “Nothing was really jumping out at me until one day I saw this position advertised and all of a sudden it made total sense to me. I’ve always been someone that had empathy and a desire to help people so I knew there and then that this was the career for me.” Prior to the funeral industry Paula had worked as a swim instructor at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 and then as a teaching assistant for students with learning needs at Marlborough Girls’ College. “I absolutely loved what I was doing, but I had also started to feel passionate about starting a new career, one where I could make a difference to people’s lives. “This is why I’m so thrilled to be part of the Geoffrey T Sowmans team. Every member of our team are so friendly and supportive and always go over and beyond to care for the families of our Marlborough community. I am proud to be part of it,” she says. One of the things that has inspired Paula is that funeral directors are often “some of the first and last people to care for a family’s

Suspicious vehicle involved in rural thefts The Blenheim Crime Prevention Group has put out a warning about a suspicious vehicle that has been targeting rural properties for theft. The vehicle in question is similar to the one in the photograph and is a Mazda Demio, of a similar colour. A male and female are reportedly using

it to steal items such as tools, machinery, trailers and motorcycles. The first letter of the registration is ‘J’, and local police are urging the public to keep an eye out throughout the Tasman District. Any suspicious activity should be reported to local police.

Grove Road bridge Litter left at the Taylor Dam reserve.

Rubbish at Taylor Dam Dear Ed, I write to you regarding the continual problem of litter being left / dumped at the Taylor Dam reserve and along the Taylor Pass Road. The Marlborough District Council website uses words for the dam reserve such as ‘a sanctuary’ and ‘attractive setting’. If we want to promote the dam reserve and actually make it a sanctuary for the bird life, then we need to start getting tough with laws. We face local, national, and global environmental problems. However, people still continue to dispose of litter in the environment. I understand the council employs people W h e n o n ly t h e b e s t W i l l d o !

to pick up litter left by Blenheim residents. Yes, this is a good thing for Blenheim, but it comes at a cost to others not responsible. Maybe the removal of the public bin has added to the devolution of the residents (minority) of Blenheim. What is the reason for not shutting and opening of the gates to the entry of the dam reserve each day? Surely this would mitigate the people employed to pick up the litter left by others and thus be a cost saving to Marlborough District Council. Gareth Shawcross Blenheim

Dear Ed, I, like Rod Heard, also thought: “Great, the Grove Road historic bridge replacement was on hold.” What a let-down. Now the bridge is not on hold any more. The ratepayers are paying for so many mess-ups. It is no joke. It is high time the Marlborough District

Council stood up to be counted. They should take a drive down Main Street and see all the heavy traffic. Why not have a bypass? I think then that most ratepayers would give the MDC full marks. D. Beattie Blenheim

Nurses go on strike Dear Ed, I was no fan of the last government in Wellington, but this current mess that calls itself a government is really the pits. Nurses and midwives are meant to go largely empty-handed because the “cupboard is bare”, but at the same time the government has half a billion for Pacific Islands and one billion for Shane Jones who will give 40 per cent of it to his cuzzies and mates in Northand

and a mere one per cent for the whole of the South Island. And there are the millions spent on free dental care for the Pacific Islanders but none for the needy right here. I hope the nurses and midwives stick to their guns against this dreadful mess of a so-called Government and get justice. Stuart Greif Blenheim

Multicultural pot luck brings people together By Megan Connolly Marlborough Multicultural Centre hosted a pot luck tea celebration on Sunday evening with guest speakers and performances from local people. Everyone who attended was encouraged to bring a dish from their own country to share. The evening also celebrated the variety of new migrant cultures in Marlborough through dance performances and the messages speakers brought. Mohan and Vandita Maham Pisharoti, from Western India, came to Marlborough in 2016 and spoke about their relocation and their journey. Their sharing was followed by Claudia Quiroga who performed two different contemporary Pacific Island dances. “The pot luck teas are more than just a gathering for our newcomers,” Migrant Services

manager Margaret Western says. “It is an opportunity to connect and make new friends, which plays a significant role in reducing social isolation and helping settlement process.” Margaret says. The Marlborough Multicultural Centre works to ensure that local people and newcomers have a welcoming community to celebrate their diversity, and they feel empowered while doing so. “Marlborough attracts and needs our international newcomers. Their contribution to the economy is significant and growing, and their cultural presence enriches our community,” Margaret says. “I believe their successful settlement is a responsibility to be shared by both long-term Marlburians and our newcomers. Together we can build an inclusive connected community that will benefit all of us.”

Making a difference in people’s lives Contributed by Robyn Bennett Growing up as an army brat Dee Smith has learnt a lot about resilience. “Both my parents were in the British Army. Dad taught, and mum was a nurse and midwife,” Dee says. “I attended 15 different schools and that makes you a survivor. “I learnt how to make friends quickly.” Travelling with her parents saw her live in Hong Kong, Belgium, Germany and Singapore. When her dad retired back in England Dee followed her mum into nursing. “I was an oncology and chemotherapy registered nurse.” Moving on, she became a team leader in drug and alcohol services. “I set up a pilot scheme to help detox alcoholics, mainly women, in the community.” Looking for a change in lifestyle, Dee, her husband and 19-year-old son moved to New Zealand in 2006 originally settling in Wellington. Why New Zealand? “I picked up a magazine that had an article about New Zealand. “From there I talked and breathed wanting to live here even though we’d never been to New Zealand before.” In Wellington Dee dipped in and out of nursing and management and also worked for Healthline as a Tele Health Nurse. She was also involved in supporting Rimutaka and Arohata prisoners both physically and mentally. “I wanted to make a difference and help bring a little bit of happiness into the lives of the prisoners.” It was having friends in Blenheim

that enticed Dee to move from Wellington. “I had attended a number of Marlborough Food and Wine Festivals. “I thought I could live here and made it a goal to move to Blenheim.” Dee nursed in Blenheim for a while but an accident where she fell and injured her right hand prompted her to change careers. “I had to learn to write and do everything with my left hand. “I love people, that drives everything that I do. “And I believe I’m a good communicator too so I decided to try my hand at real estate. “Owning a business had always been on my bucket list and here was the chance I’d been waiting for.” What advice does Dee have for women starting their own business? “Go live your dreams; go for it! “Use the skills you’ve got and build up a network of people who can help you.” Dee suddenly remembers that she will have been in business one year in July. “Gosh, that time has flown.” And will she celebrate? “I’m really hard on myself. “I’ve had a few knockbacks, but I keep going. “It’s definitely worth celebrating though.” Dee exudes warmth and you’re immediately drawn to her quiet, but bubbly personality. “I like listening to heavy metal and rock. “Black Sabbath is a favourite and I play Guitar Hero. “On the other extreme I enjoy knitting. “It keeps me off the computer.”

Young winemakers roll out skills in Vin Olympics By Bill McElhinney They rolled, cracked, tasted and spat – eight young winemakers pulled out all the stops as they competed against each other on Friday. The Tonnellerie de Mercurey South Island Young Winemaker competition, held at the Marlborough Research Centre in Budge Street, pitted four competitors from Marlborough, two from Central Otago, one from Nelson and one from Canterbury against each other in a comprehensive test of skills. Organisers say the competition is a chance for under-30s in the wine industry to show off their skills. The annual event, held at the Marlborough Research Centre, saw the

contestants taste, blend and test wine. The marketing component of the competition also saw the entrants present a two-minute speech and there was even a forklift challenge. The fun part of the competition at 12pm was the Vin Olympics, which involved a barrel rolling obstacle course, a wine fining module which included separating egg whites and a spitting competition! At the end of the day the judges tallied their scores and it was a great result for Marlborough. First place went to Greg Lane, from Foley Family Wines. Second was Kelly Stuart from Cloudy Bay Vineyards and third place went to former Marlburian Ben Tombs, who

now works for Peregrine Wines in Central Otago. “To be recognised by the industry from a very talented group of competitors is a big thrill,” Greg says. “It’s a culmination of experience working in New Zealand and abroad, and I have been lucky enough to work with and learn from some very talented winemakers.” Greg and Kelly will represent the South Island at the national final in August against the top two from the North Island event on Friday. The top four will then vie for the title of the Tonnellerie de Mercurey NZ Young Winemaker of the Year.

It’s capable of seating up to 170 people or 300 for a cocktail function and boasts of having the services of the in-house Marlborough Light & Sound and the professional event management team. Not only that, but people can have their choice of caterers and the theming possibilities are endless. The Whitehaven Wine Room has a good connection with the theatre’s foyer space, with both being able to be opened up to allow for larger events. Also soon to be completed is the Anderson Theatre. This has been designed specifically with adaptability and versatility in mind. This intimate space, will lend itself ideally to boutique theatre and concerts, breakout sessions, exhibitions,

meetings and seminars on a smaller scale, without having to compromise on quality, production and presentation options. So far this year the theatre has been hugely popular for events and conferences that have been hosted in Blenheim, bringing in hundreds and sometimes thousands of people to the region. For your next event, including weddings, contact the team at ASB Theatre to find out more about the options available.

Catering and events hire Great tasting food is everything! No matter what the occasion whether it be corporate lunches through to weddings, RB Catering will work to ensure your expectations and budget are met. The business is owned and operated by Roxanne Phipps who first established it 14 years ago. After taking a break Roxanne is back in action and taking bookings for a wide range of functions. She has also added another string to her bow by purchasing the popular Marlborough Weddings & Events business. This now means Roxanne can not only plan and run weddings and events, but she can cater for them as well. “My idea was to have an all-inclusive service which takes the hassle out of organising events. “I can take care of the whole process from planning to completion so that you can sit back and enjoy it,” she says.

Hire from Marlborough Weddings & Events to make your celebration or conference unique.

Through the Marlborough Weddings & Events, Roxanne has a huge variety of items for hire including wedding decorations, chair covers, linen and soon-to-be added crockery. Packages are available for a number of venues also, and can include catering options that can be tailored for what you need. For more information contact Roxanne.

Make your next event memorable Event packages available tailored to your needs. Let us help you enjoy your next big event

With room for up to 560 guests, an on-site professional event manager and catering team, let your next event with Marlborough Convention Centre will be one you’ll remember.

Oliver and Charlotte dominate name trends Baby names, we all love to hear what parents have named their children, but which are the most popular? The most interesting baby name trends for 2018 show some of the old favourites topping the charts for boys and girls, including Charlotte and Oliver which once again have proved to be the most popular in New Zealand. Harper, as a girl’s name, continues it’s meteoric rise, and is now the second most popular girl’s name. Mila is another name that’s jumped in popularity this year, sneaking into the top 10. Similarly the boy’s name Arlo

sneaks into the top 10, after having risen every year for the last five years. Not surprisingly, George continues to make a comeback after Prince George was born four years ago. Here are the top 10 names according to the latest releases from Births Deaths & Marriages NZ. Boys: Oliver, Jack, Noah, William, Hunter, James, George, Mason, Lucas, Arlo. Girls: Charlotte, Harper, Isla, Olivia, Ava, Amelia, Mia, Mila, Sophie, Emily. In the category of Maori baby names, trends for the past two years

show that the most popular for babies born in New Zealand include Maia for girls and Nikau for boys. Each name was carefully researched by Te Taura Whiri I te reo Maori, the Maori Language Commission, to confirm it was a Maori name. Here are the top 10. Girls: Maia, Ariana, Manaia, Anahera, Hana, Amaia, Aroha, Ataahua, Tia, Ria. Boys: Nikau, Ari, Kauri, Manaia, Te Ariki, Mikaere, Ihaia, Rawiri, Hemi, Tai.

Water polo festival By Megan Connolly After weeks of fundraising, the Marlborough Under 14 water polo team headed to Auckland for the recent Pan Pacific Youth Water Polo Festival. The girls worked hard during the tournament, beating Canberra and Waikato, but tough competition meant that the team finished the festival at 23 out of the 28 teams. “They had a tough pool, where three of the other teams finished up in the top eight teams,” a team organiser Fran Brinn says. The event is the largest water polo festival in the southern hemisphere and is played at five different pools in Auckland, with over 150 teams from around the world competing. The Marlborough Polo Jacks were the only team from Marl-

borough to go to Auckland to compete, and trained six days a week in preparation for all their games. “Unlike the state-wide Aussie teams who select 13 girls from over 100 clubs, we had nine girls, half of who moved up from the under 12 team this year and an 11-year-old who stepped up as a sub,” Fran says. The girls funded the trip by selling bags of manure, pine cones and home-made honey wraps, while at the same time keeping up their training. The girls would like to thank Redwood Trust, Subway, Hunting and Fishing, Pak’nSave, Bryn Spray Farm, Floor Pride, Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000, Kiwi Seed Co. Marlborough Ltd for their support, as well as coach Alastair Keay.
