By Bill McElhinney Work is nearly completed on installing new LED street lighting in Blenheim. Over the past six months Marlborough Lines staff has installed about 3500 LED street lights throughout the district. “We’re now installing the new LED lights in the town centre,” Marlborough Lines contract manager Jason Null says. “Some of that has involved installing new poles for the LED lights. We’re about two weeks away from finishing the project.” Continued on page 2 Nick Williams from Marlborough Lines installs another new LED street light in Market Street.

New LED street lights nearly finished Continued from page 1 The street lights project has come with big savings for ratepayers, the Marlborough District Council says. The estimated cost to convert Marlborough’s street lighting to the energy-saving bulbs was $3 million and the plan had been to phase them in over the next six years. However the NZ Transport Agency offered to pick up 85 per cent of the cost if the Marlborough District Council made the switch by December this year. Council grabbed the chance to switch to the long-lasting and brighter LED bulbs, at one-sixth of the full conversion cost. “We’d be mad not to accept this deal from the government,” deputy mayor
Terry Sloan said when the idea came up at council. Making the switch will also save $150,000 a year on the public power bill for street lighting, the council says. Existing bulbs have to be replaced every two or three years, but the brighter, white-light LED bulbs have a 15 to 18-year lifespan. This will lead to fewer outages and much lower maintenance and replacement costs. “The timing of the project was ideal,” Jason says, “as many of the older street light fittings were coming to end of their life and were costly to maintain.” The new LEDs are a white light that has a defined spill area; quite a different light to the sodium lights that provide a more orange, diffused light. Some concerns were initially raised
by residents in newer subdivisions about the replacement of the bronze and heritage-style light fittings. However, there is no way of using the heritage style fittings with LEDs. The NZTA is also very specific in requiring light to be directed downward as opposed to everywhere, which the older fittings do. “The fittings we removed are being recycled,” Jason says. “Its part of the deal we did with the supplier of the new fittings, that they take back the old ones for recycling.” After the council-owned street lights, including those in the townships are changed over, the lighting on the state highways will be done, Marlborough Roads journey manager Steve Murrin says.
The heritage-style street lamps in some of Blenheim’s newer subdivisions have had to be replaced with the new LED lights, which direct the light downwards.

Firms rock up to fix soggy RDA yard By Bill McElhinney The flood-prone yard at Marlborough Riding for the Disabled in Taylor Pass Road is being repaired. Workmen from local firms Simcox Construction and T.C. Nicholls turned up on Saturday morning to begin the work. The yard has flooded every time it rains and the water does not drain away, making the area un-useable and preventing staff from getting to the stables. “There was just no drainage there,” Ryan Allcot from Simcox Construction says. “So we’ve dug a big soak pit, which will drain the water away. “Once that is sorted staff from Downers are coming in to build a wash bay for the horses, and the water from that will drain into the soak pit as well.” Excavating the area revealed
that it was built on what was once a rubbish dump. Not far down the workers struck remains of rubbish that had been dumped there years earlier. “Once we got right down to a gravel base, we knew the water would drain away,” Ryan says. A story in the Sun about the yard flooding prompted the generous response from local firms to fix the problem. “It could have cost $10,000 to fix this problem, so we’re so grateful these firms have come to do the job for nothing” RDA manager Helena van Velthooven says. Marlborough RDA is a voluntary, non profit organisation which provides therapeutic, horse-related activities for a wide range of people with physical, intellectual, emotional and social challenges.
Hayden Edwards, from T.C. Nicholls and Ryan Allcott and Dane Kearon from Simcox Contsruction were fixing the drainage problem at Marlborough Riding for Disabled on Saturday.

Marlborough doing well Marlborough’s economy is still doing better than the national economy. The provisional estimate of GDP showed growth of 3.5 per cent over the year to June, well above the 2.7 per cent estimate of GDP growth nationally. It pointed to strong exports and a strong labour market with spending growing and the average number of people receiving Jobseeker Support down. It estimates Marlborough gained 121 international migrants and 207 domestic migrants in the year to June 2018. Tourism spending, traffic flows, and residential building consents were also up, higher than the national figures.

Deborah Mortimer knows she is safe with her new hearing impaired fire and security alarms that she can access with the push of a button. Inset: Deborah with the smoke alarms that flashes to alert her if there is a fire or someone at the door.
Deborah is ‘good as gold’ By Megan Connolly Deborah Mortimer has been hearing impaired since birth. She is a Housing NZ tenant and has been living on her own for 23 years, all that time with normal smoke alarms. But as time went on Deborah became more concerned about not being able to hear her smoke alarms if they went off. She used to go to bed, remove her hearing aids, and worry about what might happen in the event of
a fire in her house. But now Deborah can rest easy after new hearing impaired alarms were installed in her house last week. The new alarms are small, rectangular boxes on her ceiling which flash blue when someone rings the doorbell, red if there’s a fire, or Deborah can press a button which sets off an audible alarm to scare away any intruders that may be snooping around the house. They’re hard for her to miss too.
There are alarm lights on the ceiling of her lounge room, kitchen, bedroom and spare bedroom, so wherever she is in the house, she can feel safe. “I can be in the bedroom doing something and not have to worry,” Deborah says. She also has a device that goes under her mattress and shakes the bed to wake her up. “I’m definitely waking up to that!” Deborah says. The new alarms were organised
by Housing NZ after an inspector came to check the house. The inspector tested Deborah’s smoke alarms several times, and when she didn’t react, it was decided to do something about it for her. “Kevin Forquhaur, who installed the alarms, was so nice I even gave him a hug afterwards,” Deborah says. Now Deborah really feels safe in her home. “It’s amazing! I’m over the moon!” she says.

Vintage car display raises cash for Cancer Society By Megan Connolly The Vintage Car Club of NZ Marlborough Branch held their Daffodil Vehicle Display for Cancer at Brayshaw Park on Sunday. The event attracted a wide range of vehicles, 230 vintage cars as well as nine boats from the Picton Clinker and Classic Boat Club. The day was a huge success, with all the proceeds going straight back to the Marlborough Cancer Society. This is the second year the Marlborough branch of the Vintage Car Club has organised this fundraiser and they will likely continue to organise the event, Kelly Landon-Lane, from the Vintage Car Club, says. This year they easily raised more money than last year’s total of of $8000. “It was a great day with a good atmosphere. “We’d like to thank the public for turning up for a great cause, and thank our members for assisting in every way,” Kelly says.

Cruise ship visitors bring in millions By Bill McElhinney International visitors arriving in Marlborough by cruise ships spent $18 million in the area during the 2017/18 cruise season, up 80 per cent on the previous year. Marlborough’s growth was one of the highest in the country, with 112,191 passengers and crew arriving on the 41 cruise ships that berthed in Picton during the season. And Marlborough’s popularity brought 175 domestic and international cruise ship delegates to Blenheim last weekend to attend the New Zealand Cruise Association conference. The delegates included international cruise line representatives. They were joined by representatives from most New Zealand port regions,
Tourism New Zealand, Air New Zealand, DOC, Tourism Industry Aotearoa. There was also a delegation of international and New Zealand cruise industry media at the conference. The visitors were taken on a Port Marlborough hosted tour of the Port in Picton and welcome function at Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre followed by a full day conference at the Marlborough Convention Centre. Destination Marlborough General Manager Jacqui Lloyd, who has recently been appointed to the Board of Cruise New Zealand Association, says hosting the conference in Marlborough gave the region the opportunity to demonstrate why it is a strong performer as a cruise destination “We deliberately set out to influence
the timing of the conference for the end of the week so that we could encourage delegates to stay on for the weekend to see for themselves why Marlborough is a brilliant cruise destination,” Jacqui says. Marlborough hosting the NZ Cruise Association annual conference is a huge coup, Port Marlborough chief executive Rhys Welbourn says. “Port Marlborough has invested heavily in cruise infrastructure over the last few years, including facilities which allow us to accommodate the largest cruise vessels in the world.” Forty three cruise ships are scheduled to berth in Picton during the 2018/19 season. The first ship of the season, the Radiance of the Seas, is scheduled to arrive on October 3.
The Ovation of the Seas, pictured here berthed in Port at Shakespeare Bay, is due to visit Picton six times during the coming cruise season. Cruise ship visitors have spent millions of dollars in Marlborough. Photo Michael Beech.

By Megan Connolly The Marlborough Civic Orchestra will be performing a medley of songs inspired by British films and British composers for their concert, ‘The British Empire Strikes Bach’ this Saturday, September 1, at 7pm at the ASB Theatre. With everything from 007, Game of Thrones and Star Wars to classical favourites by Vaughan-Williams, Elgar, Holst, and Bach, the variety of music means there is something for everyone, orchestra manager Linda Lloyd says. The Marlborough orchestra was formed around four years ago when violinist and music teacher Linda felt there was a need for such a community musical group. Wit h t he help of ot her like-minded people, she formed a group where individuals could brush off their instruments and get back into orchestra playing while enjoying fun and comradery, Linda says. “It’s been an exciting progression. We started off with only four violins; now we have 29 people in the strings section.
“We have a full orchestra for this concert, nothing is missing!” Linda says. Recently appointed orchestra chairman, Andy Collier, was recruited for the orchestra only two days after moving to Marlborough, his skills as a string player making him a lucky catch for the local orchestra. Andy’s violin skills mainly involve playing jigs in a more relaxed setting with his band, Shamrock Touch, which is a little different to playing classically in an orchestra. But “music is music,” Andy says. The concert will feature 51 performers on stage primarily from Marlborough, conducted by David Brooks and tutored by freelance violinist from Wellington, Karla Norton. “The concert has great music and entertainment. There’s something for everyone. If you’ve never been before, try it out! You won’t get bored,” Linda says. Tickets for the ‘The British Empire Strikes Bach’ are available from the ASB Theatre. Adults $32.50, Seniors $27.50 and children only $10.

Sunday song a winner Dear Ed, How fortunate were those of us who attended the recent 2pm Sunday Song Service. It was nothing short of grandiose – roof lifting. I’m sure the angels above gathered loads of our voices to be shared at the Most High. The band was par excellence and the leader deserved the response given. The soloists filled the church with quality music and what a beautiful, rich impression our Island brothers made. The careful selection of period music gave the programme historic significance. For me, every one of the hymns had a solid foundation in my childhood and these were later introduced to our families by various Christian denominations. It was without doubt one of the best put together shows for many years. It took me back to the devotions of my childhood and all those special servants of God who gave so much. Rod Eatwell Blenheim

Dear Ed, There is no economic benefit to our country in spending $20 million – plus to fix the bridge bottleneck at the north end of Blenheim. We desperately need this money to fix a little hole we have created in the last 20 years in our trade training system, in our general education, in our public housing, in our health system. We wasted $1.4 billion on a tunnel between Auckland suburbs, to the benefit of overseas financiers. State highway One is an excellent route for views of our beautiful country, but as a trade route it is only a drain on public money. We are not trapped in a landlocked country,
at the mercy of difficult roading geography. We know that water transport is vastly more fuel-efficient than any other system and, when not burning bunker fuel, is more environmentally friendly. Wasteful systems exist because they put more money into certain hands. Efficiency is not in the best short-term interests of all too many politicians and bureaucrats. Former Bank of New Zealand chairman Kerry McDonald is right in calling for a royal commission into the policy failures of recent successive governments. Voter apathy has grievously injured New Zealand. Bill Holvey Blenheim

Pamper Day ‘incredible’, women say By Celeste Alexander There was an air of excitement mixed with the smell of hairspray and nailpolish at last week’s Pamper Day held at the Rangitane Cultural Centre at Grovetown. This annual event drew together over 70 women for a day of relaxation, pampering and empowerment thanks to the many local businesses that supported it by sending along hairstylists, beauticians and massage therapists.
In its fifth year, the Pamper Day is held for local women who are invited to attend by around 15 community services and government organisations. The whole aim is to make it as special as possible for the women, co-ordinator Paula Taylor says. “Those benefiting from this day are women with value and something to contribute to our community, they just need the boost to realise their own self-worth,” she says.
A huge amount of quality preloved clothing was also donated by the community which the women were able to choose from. “It’s been an amazing day and everyone involved has had so much fun,” Paula says. Hair stylist Vana Bradley was taking part in her first Pamper Day and says it was a “great feeling”. “It feels like the right thing to do… giving your time to other women. It’s heartwarming,” she
says. For Wairau Pharmacy beauty therapist Kelsi Symons it was her third time and “a lot of fun”. “I love being part of this, it’s such an incredible event,” she says. Those who were receiving the pampering couldn’t speak more highly of the day, including Jen Hartley and Leonie MacDonald. “It’s been really great coming along today, especially meeting people in similar situations.
YOU’RE INVITED!
“It’s also been good having a day of pampering without the kids and a bit of a practice leading up to my wedding at the end of the year,” Jen says. “I’ve found it a little confronting in the way of letting people look after you which isn’t something I’m used to. “There’s a real sense of community with everyone pitching in and being kind to one another… it’s been nice,” Leonie says.

Bruno made his mark Former Marlborough journalist Phil Campbell looks back on the legacy of sportsman, local body politician and businessman Bruno Dalliessi. The romantically named Bruno Julio Dalliessi certainly made an impact on Marlborough. When he died last week aged 83, Bruin, as he was sometimes called, left a formidable legacy. Bruno was a New Zealand heavyweight boxing champion in 1955 and 1957, representing Canterbury, and from the front row of provincial rugby he joined the front row of local body politics. In 1966 when still pulling on his ‘dreaded red shirt’, a phrase coined by selector Pat Dwyer, he was also elected Mayor of Picton. Bruno’s new status became national news. Not only was Bruno the youngest mayor in New Zealand, but Bob Penington, of the Picton borough’s salaried staff with whom a lifelong friendship was forged, was the youngest town clerk. In his final representative rugby game Bruno propped with hooker Geoff Evans, now a Marlborough district councillor, who was playing his first game. B r u n o wo n h i s a m a t e u r heavyweight boxing title from Christchurch in 1955, pounding a chap named Wolfgramm. By a happy coincidence, Bruno played for Marlborough at the same time as Brian (Tank) Sadd, who
also held the national heavyweight amateur crown. Both were strong front row men, the forerunners of such other stanchions as Jim Joseph, Bosun Huntley, Lucky MacDonald and Ken Hart. His reputation extended beyond the Rarangi coast to Wellington.
In 1966 Bruno was the youngest mayor in New Zealand.
A 20-year-old Dave Olliver had been picked at prop for Wellington B to play against Marlborough at Lansdowne Park. Olliver was ribbed by his Wellington confrere, for Bruno to them was still heavyweight champion of New Zealand. Yet Olliver, who had earned his spurs by then against All Blacks Ivan Vodanovich and Ken Gray, found Bruno an excellent propping opponent, who did not resort to the byzantine arts of front row play others of lesser ability often did. Later, Bruno and Dave were
Marlborough team mates. Despite his large, athletic and well-proportioned size, Bruno Dalliessi was a man of amiable disposition. He was imposing physically, but like most of his kind comfortable within their skins, he allied a quick wit with business smarts and political acumen. Everything seemed easy to him. He was ready with a laugh and a beer once the heat of political battles ended for the day. Between the 1960s to late 1980s Bruno represented Marlborough for a myriad of local associations and organisations. He worked tirelessly to support the Catholic schools and parishes in Picton and Blenheim. Bruno was elected to the Marlborough Harbour Board in 1971 and as board chairman in 1983, later becoming an inaugural director of Port Marlborough. Bruno owned and had shares in several successful Marlborough businesses, mainly hospitality. After retiring in the late 1980s, he was approached to take on the role of chief executive of the Blenheim Working Men’s Club and was instrumental in turning the club into one of Blenheim’s most profitable businesses of that time.
Bruno Dalliessi.
He was later instrumental in the establishment of the Clubs of Marlborough. Bruno carried himself with dignity, whether meeting the Queen at Picton in 1970 or dealing with awkward staff and political matters. He was chairman of the Marlborough Harbour Board, which was abolished in 1991, its assets having been transferred to Marlborough Regional Council. It was the last harbour board to be abolished. All boards were abolished in 1986, except Marlborough, which remained as an entity to avoid a potential costly settlement in the wake of the sinking of the Mikhail Lermontov. Over several decades, Bruno belonged to a card school of memorable Blenheim citizens – Dave Olliver, Razor Saul, Bob Penington, John Davis, Boof Davis, John Cuddon, Mark Peters, Bill Blackmore and Jack Gleeson. Each week they met and matters
of state (for these were the days of land rezonings and pushes by governments to centralise local bodies) were put aside for several hours. But here, too, Bruno showed his talents for few knew he was also a South Island poker champion. Footnote: Bruno’s wife Monica predeceased him several months ago. They had five daughters. Monica had also done her bit for the province. She became Blenheim’s first teacher in porcelain painting. At that time, local artists travelled in convoy to Nelson. Monica then formed the first Marlborough Porcelain Artists’ Association, of which she became President and, later, founded the Marlborough Guild. Note: Thanks to Dave Olliver, Bob Penington, Liz Evans and the Dalliessi family in compiling this tribute.

Transport Agency South Island Director of Regional Relationships Jim Harland says the appointment marks a major milestone
in the development of the bridge on State Highway 1. “Investigations identified that the existing bridge was too narrow and unsuitable for current transport needs,” Mr Harland says. Work is due to start in early September, weather dependent, following a blessing and ground-breaking ceremony with key stakeholders including neighbouring residents, iwi and business owners. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2020. The Transport Agency has budgeted $21 million to cover the cost of bridge construction. The existing bridge, a Heritage NZ Category 1 Heritage Place, will be retained for pedestrians and cyclists.

Steve Fantham has been operating his coffee cart for 13 years and recently moved onto Grove Road.
Coffee cart going strong after 13 years By Celeste Alexander It’s black, shiny, smells of heavenly fresh coffee and is now located along Grove Road, beside the SPCA Opshop. Steve’s Coffee Cart has been brewing up fresh coffee daily for 13 years but the passion is stronger than ever! Owner, operator Steve Fantham estimates he was the first commercial coffee cart that set up for business all those years ago and recalls the first place he began trading, in The Warehouse carpark before renovations and extensions took place. He says it all began when he sold off a business and was “in between” projects when he decided to continue being self-employed and go back to coffee. “I saw it happening in Brisbane and thought it would be something good to start up in Blenheim... and here we still are today,” he grins. He’s moved around a few different locations, but his regulars are always happy to follow. “Since relocating to Grove Road three weeks ago, I’ve had a few of my old regulars pop back up which has been great,” he says.
The coffee cart itself has had a facelift recently, going from being “a tin shack” as Steve called it, to a gloss black with shiny chrome lettering. “It’s looking really good now and draws a bit of attention which is good,” he says. If you ask his regulars why they continue to support Steve, they’d probably say “the smooth, flavoursome coffee”, he laughs. “What’s the secret to my coffee? Well that’s going to stay a secret,” he jokes. “But I can say it’s all in the beans, the temperature and the love of the barrista that have an awful lot to do with it! “I like to serve my customers coffee that’s good. If it’s not right, it doesn’t go out. I started this business because people deserve good coffee,” he says. He also attributes it to the older style lever gear coffee machine that he uses. “It’s probably the only one in town. But it gets the coffee absolutely right,” he says. Steve’s Coffee Cart operates five days a week at his Grove Road location, then at the Blenheim Rotary Boot Sale Market on Saturdays.

Blenheim Marlborough
TrusTed in Marlborough for over 33 years
After 12 years being in business with Heating Marlborough, owner Peter Cairns is selling.
Peter is selling up By Celeste Alexander For nearly 17 years local man Peter Cairns has been involved in the home heating industry but now he’s decided on ‘a lifestyle change’ and is selling his Grove Road business, Heating Marlborough. Born in Marlborough, Peter spent his earlier years working as a panel beater then doing insurance work. After a few years spent overseas he returned to Blenheim and decided on a new direction, and bought a chimney cleaning business. After five years this led to the opportunity to open Heating Marlborough with the help of a business partner, opening the first shop at 23 Grove Road. Three years later the business had outgrown where it was so they shifted further down Grove Road to its current premises, formerly occupied by Croads Honda. Further change took place five years ago when Peter bought out his business partner. But now after 12 years Peter has decided on a change and is looking forward to finding
a new owner. “It’s a good, well established business in a great location, ideal for someone to bring in some new enthusiasm. “There’s still a lot of work to do with the council’s ‘Home Clean Heating Scheme’ to replace the old fires from the Blenheim air-shed, and we have the BBQ retail side which is going well. “Plus I have a good team here, some of whom have been here a number of years,” he says. Asked if he will be sad to see the business sold, Peter says “yes and no”. “It’s a great business that I’ve put a lot of time and energy into but at the same time I want more of a balance back. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge from this industry and I’ll still be involved somehow,” he says. “I’ve enjoyed the fact that this business is busy through winter and a little slower over summer so you get a bit of downtime when it’s warmer, but I’m looking forward to the next chapter,” he says.
