Speech skills

By Bill McElhinney Lily Chen came to New Zealand from Taiwan eight years ago, and despite learning English in her home country, Lily still struggles with the language. “I’m fine with reading English,” Lily says, “but I have trouble with pronunciation and understanding the meaning when someone is speaking.” But now Lily has a helper, Isobel Wylds, who is a volunteer tutor with English Language Partners in Marlborough. Continued on page 2 PHOTO: Lily Chen from Taiwan with her tutor Isobel Wylds and tutor Alison Wylds-Blackburn at the rear with her pupil Mami Yasuda from Japan.

TWICE WEEKLY

Learning English and making friends Continued from page 1 Lily and Isobel meet for an hour every week and Isobel helps Lily with her English skills. “It’s a great help,” Lily says. “I can practice conversation and Isobel can help with my pronunciation and explain various meanings for me.” “We took a drive out to my brother’s farm in the Wairau Valley recently,” Isobel says. “On the way we could talk about what we saw.” “Yes,” says Lily enthusiastically, “we saw cattle up close and some Australian birds – spur wing plovers!” “Its fun and we’ve become good friends,” Isobel says. “We’ve been to lots of plac-

es and events, visited the art gallery, and went to the Anzac Day concerts. It all helps with Lily’s learning.” Isobel’s daughter, Alison Wylds-Blackburn, is also a tutor. For the past 18 months she has been meeting every week with Mami Yasuda, who came to New Zealand from Japan eight years ago. Like Lily, Mami studied English at school in Japan but needs help with speaking and sometimes understanding the spoken language. “We often use the Sun newspaper in our lessons,” Alison says. “I get Mami to read an article and then we talk about

it and sometimes I get her to write comments about it.” “She gives me homework!” Mami says with a smile. “And Mami comes with lots of questions,” Alison says. The couple use a variety of resources and look for interests they have in common so they can discuss them together. “It’s getting used to the everyday phrases and sometimes the slang language that we use that is the challenge for these students,” Alison says. “But when we teach, we also learn – about other people and other cultures. It’s very rewarding.”

Eunsook is one of Blenheim’s home tutor volunteers, and her learner is Vika. Eunsook is from South Korea and Vika is from Tonga. They have formed a firm friendship and each learns from the other.

Home tutors helping migrants By Bill McElhinney It’s not easy to begin a new life in a country that’s vastly different from your own, and some migrants also face the challenge of overcoming the initial language barrier. That’s where English Language Partners Marlborough and their volunteer teachers can help. “Our special ESOL home tutoring programme allows learners and tutors to learn alongside each other,” says Charlotte Wood, co-ordinator of English Language Partners Marlborough. “People are genuinely engaged in picking up English for their new lives here, to get to know other Kiwis, find work, and settle kids into school. And volunteers work hard to help them do this.” The teaching takes place in learners’ homes, which is a comfortable environment if you’re new to English, and a relaxed space for volunteers to develop teaching skills, Charlotte says.

“Our tutors provide a hugely valuable service, and love what they do,” “Many make great friendships with learners and other volunteers.” “That’s why we’re applauding both learners and volunteers.” “They’re acquiring new skills together, and with a lot of enthusiasm!” “We’ve been celebrating recently with a writing competition, where learners are invited to write about why Marlborough is the best place to live,” says Charlotte. The Marlborough group recently ran a day where Margaret Western from the Marlborough Migrants Centre with Anne Barrer and Jude Streeter gave the tutors tips on dealing with other cultures. English Language Partners teaches English to newer Kiwis nationwide. The organisation has 23 locations and works with more than 7000 refugee and migrant adults and 1800 volunteers annually.

Red Cross show success

The Red Cross Crosses the Runway fashion show held on Monday evening was a real success, and $2600 was raised for Marlborough Red Cross, show convenor Lorna Whitehead says. “A huge thank you to Michelle Bradley, MC, for coming to our rescue at short notice. It was a fun with wonderful volunteer support from all involved, including hairdresser Nadia, all the models, work group members, back stage crew and Marlborough Public House owner and staff.” Lorna says. Lynn Evans is the only person in Marlborough with a ‘hearing dog’, and says her Shih Tzu cross Bichon ‘Gem’ attracts a lot of attention.

Lending a paw By Celeste Alexander With her friendly nature and happy wagging tail, Gem, a Shih tzu cross Bichon hearing dog, is the perfect companion for local woman Lynn Evans. Lynn has moderate hearing loss in her right ear and no hearing in her left ear, so ever since her hearing dog arrived she has enjoyed the peace of mind that Gem will alert her to important sounds that most people take for granted. What’s more, Gem is the only hearing dog in Marlborough. Gem is trained to respond to certain sounds such as the doorbell or knocking, the smoke alarm, the telephone ringing and even alerts Lynn if there are people walking close behind her. “If the doorbell or phone rings

I don’t hear it unless I’m close by them, so Gem will come to me and put her paws on my knees. I say ‘what is it’ and she leads me to the phone or door. “If the smoke alarm goes off she lays flat on the floor. I have a specialised visual vibrating smoke alerting system but if I don’t notice it, it’s comforting for me to know that Gem will get my attention,” Lynn says. Being a hearing dog, Gem has special privileges and can go anywhere with Lynn, with the only exception being a hospital’s intensive care unit. Gem wears a yellow jacket with the words ‘hearing dog’ printed on it so people know she has the right of access to any public place as well as public transport.

“Gem attracts a lot of interest from people who are curious about her, so I wanted to create an awareness of what she is and how she helps me with my everyday life by going everywhere with me,” Lynn says. Hearing dogs like Gem are specially trained by charitable trust Hearing Dogs for Deaf People NZ. They are trained in Taranaki at a specialised centre and no specific breed or type of dog is preferred, hearing dogs can come in all shapes and sizes. The cost to train each dog is $30,000 so as you can imagine, the application process is quite “intensive”, Lynn says. “There’s quite a bit of paperwork to submit as well as interviews and face-to-face meetings. Re-

ferrals are also required from an audiologist. I’ve also had support from my hearing therapist Tania Shearer of Life Unlimited, a charitable trust that provides free aural rehabilitation. “Once I was approved I went up for a week and stayed at a cottage on the compound, free of cost, to meet the dog and spend a week with it. “My first dog was called Ava which I had for 12months but she got sick and was retired to a nice home. “Then I met Gem and we had an instant connection. “I’ve had Gem since May and she is a lovely dog, a good companion and I couldn’t imagine life without her now,” she says.

Ulysses memorial rememberance service By Celeste Alexander A special memorial service is being held by the Ulysses Club Marlborough Branch this Sunday in remembrance of members who have passed away. This is the first time that the Marlborough branch has held its own memorial service. Normally the Ulysses Club hosts an event in the North and South Islands. “The South Island service is so big due to the number of people who have passed

away over the years and it takes a long time to read the names, particularly for those who travel from Marlborough to hear their loved ones read out,” club member Murray Brooks says. Murray spoke with the Marlborough branch committee which decided it was a good idea. “We thought it would create a more personal service for members and the family of the deceased to attend, a celebration of their lives,” he says.

The memorial service will be held at 2.30pm at the commemoration plaque and rock at the corner of Hutcheson and John Streets in Blenheim, opposite the ASB Theatre. The ‘Bikers Prayer’ will be read out followed by a reading of names by branch coordinator Kelvin Watson. Family and friends will have an opportunity to say a few words, then once the service is finished there will be an afternoon tea held at the Clubs of Marlborough.

There will be temporary road closures to allow the line of vehicles transporting the students into the Clubs of Marlborough carpark. To make the formal a success, there have been a number of local businesses that have sponsored the event

which this year, is themed “A Night on Mount Olympus Ancient Greece”. The organising committee wishes to thank the following sponsors. Money to benefit kids By Celeste Alexander Members of the Harcourts Marlborough team enjoyed a session of games with students at Whitney Street School last Thursday, as part of the Kiwi Can programme delivered by the Graeme Dingle Foundation. Kiwi Can is an energy-packed primary school programme that is delivered throughout local schools. It teaches values such as integrity and respect, and delivers fun-filled learning

to schools, and sets a foundation of values and life skills that the students take with them through school and into later in life. Because Harcourts Marlborough makes regular donations to the Foundation, team members wanted to sit in on a session before presenting a cheque for $2500. Mark Davis, Chris Greenhill, Ben McLennan, Matthew Stretch and Aimee McIntyre enjoyed ball and marble games with the stu-

dents and listened in on the Kiwi Can talks about honesty, responsibility and reliability. The Graeme Dingle Foundation applied for a grant from the Harcourts Foundation Grant Scheme, to help buy laptops for the Kiwi Can leaders for their lessons in the schools. Picton man sets sights on Air Force fire fighting By Bill McElhinney Being the oldest recruit on his Air Force recruit course didn’t stop Picton man Shannon Huntley from winning one of the top awards. I read regular books.

I like reading regular books more than ebooks.

I read paper books. The brightness of an ebook can be too much but an ebook would be handy if you’re travelling.

I prefer a book. There’s just something about holding a book but I use an ebook while travelling.

I read regular books, I like the feel and the smell of paper books.

Regular books. It’s nice to hold a book.

Had enough of Winston Dear Ed, Most of us didn’t vote for Winston (Mr seven per cent) Peters in the last election, but we were prepared to cut him some slack when he decided to toss his lot in with Labour. But our patience is fading fast as we watch Winston’s latest shenanigans, attempting to manoeuvre himself and his motley crew into positions of power which they don’t deserve.

Let’s face it folks: It’s all about Winston, not what’s best for the future of our country, and many of us are getting tired of it. Jamie Arbuckle seems like a nice young man. If I was him I’d be looking to unhitch myself from Winston’s lot because at the rate they’re going, NZ First is heading for oblivion. Had Enough Blenheim

Nelson turns it on Dear Ed I so hope some councillors were able to attend last Saturday in Nelson for the AB’s game. Nelson turned it on in style. Streets closed by 2pm on Saturday for a GREAT street party. Entertainment tops, all bars and restaurants joining in to provide great food and drinks. So refreshing, children being allowed in all areas, no designated areas for drinking like we experience at street events here in Blenheim. The atmosphere was absolutely fantastic. Having attended many pre All Blacks events, this has to be the best. Nelson does everything right from dogs being welcomed in the CBD to free parking for the first hour all to encourage people to town. Come on Blenheim, we too could host amazing events, but council need to chill out with rules and regulations and remember how we can do rather than how hard can we make it! Science Fair keeps bright young minds busy By Bill McElhinney Young Marlborough minds have been busy over recent weeks dreaming up projects for the annual Marlborough Lines Science and Technology Fair: The Science Fair has been an annual event since the 1960s, and is now a partnership of Blenheim Lions, local school teachers, community sponsors and the major sponsor, Marlborough Lines. Marlborough Lines is a long standing advocate of the need for increased youth interest in science and technology, so is committed to helping local schools enhance students’ interest in both. The event gives youngsters a chance to be a scientist and do experiments to find about their world, or be a technologist who solves problems that people may have. More than 450 primary and secondary school students have been taking part in this year’s Marlborough Science and Technology Celebration, all supported by their schools, teachers and parents. Individuals or groups develop their scientific investigations and technological solutions in a competition initially held

within their own schools. The successful projects then compete at a regional level and are exhibited to the public at the Science Fair. The event is currently being held at the Stadium, with the prize giving tonight at 7pm. Over the past few weeks pupils from Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ Colleges have been visiting various schools and judging the entries to see which ones would make it in to the exhibition. “The young judges are all science pupils,” former science teacher and science adviser Hugh Lensen says, “They have judging forms to complete which guide them through the process. “There are far more categories this year, so we’re seeing a tremendous range of different exhibits.” There are prizes for each year grouping, and the winner of the most outstanding exhibit will be offered a scholarship for further tertiary education.

Can we reduce the amount of rubbish bags we waste? Keera Duncan from Tua Marina School has her science fair project asessed by Rebecca Bassett and Hollie Allen.

Does age affect your reaction times? Tua Marina pupil Eden McLeod, left, shows her project to Marlborough Girls' College judges Hayley Gill and Estrella Tyrell.

Poppa’s Christmas creations There’s always something happening in ‘Poppa’s Garage’, where Ken Lemon creates wooden Christmas decorations for family members as Celeste Alexander finds out.

A hobby that began in Ken’s home garage in Blenheim is now keeping him so busy that he’s in there working most days. His decorations have been such a hit that he’s now making them for the Hospice Pre-Christmas Peek fundraising event being held on December 2. “I don’t work weekends though due to Union problems,” he jokes as he winks at his wife. “I like to be busy and have something to do so I come out first thing in the morning, stop for smoko and lunch breaks and finish around 2pm. “It keeps me occupied and I like that the things I make bring people pleasure,” he smiles. The retiree has built wooden toys for his great-grandchildren over the years including tables and chairs, toyboxes, treasure chests, ironing boards and even a digger. Then his daughter Moerea Mustard asked him one year if he could make her some wooden shaped candy canes and Christmas trees for her backyard. “It all started with the candy canes,” Moerea laughs. “The theme of my house at Christmas is the

result of Poppa’s workshop... lots of outdoor decorations. “My yard is very Christmasy and the envy of my friends and neighbours,” she says. Moerea, who is the volunteer coordinator for Hospice Marlborough, then asked Ken if he would consider making them for Hospice’s

decorations attached to a 3 metre long string. He is also making Christmas tree sets, with three trees of different sizes to a set. The Christmas trees have been designed to be packed away flat, and can have decorations added to them. “They’re also something that can be passed down through the family,” Ken adds.

These decorations will be sold at a ‘mini market’ as part of the Hospice Pre-Christmas Peek, where ticket holders visit local houses decorated in Christmas theme. Ticket holders will have the opportunity to purchase items at the mini market, so if you want to get your hands on some of Ken’s wooden decorations, make sure you purchase a ticket. Moerea’s house will be part of

the event, showcasing many more of Ken’s creations. The Hospice Pre-Christmas Peek will be held on Sunday, December 2 from 10am - 4pm and tickets for this go on sale on October 1. They cost $55 each and can be purchased from Mayflower Studio on the corner of Queen Street and Maxwell Road, the Hospice Shop in Redwoodtown or online at www.prechristmaspeek.co.nz

Ian has best results so far

By Celeste Alexander A crowd of more than 20 people gathered at the Marlborough Airport to surprise Spring Creek man Ian Woolley as he stepped off the plane, after competing at the World Ploughing Championship where he won third place. Ian looked surprised as he walked into the terminal, as

signs were held up and a cheer erupted from the crowd. His supporters were congratulating him on his fantastic effort making it onto the podium after competing against 31 other countries. This was Ian’s best result since he first began competing at the World Champs over the past four consecutive years. Ian Woolley and wife Jenny stepped off the plane to be greeted by an awaiting crowd. Ian won third place at the World Ploughing Championship held in Germany recently.

Gemma gets Taonga for community work By Megan Connolly The work Gemma McKinney has done for the Marlborough Maori community was celebrated on Friday evening at the Te Pataka o Wairau Maori Night Market in Seymour square. Gemma was recognised for a wide variety of reasons one of the organisers, Ranae Niven, says. “It is for her dedication to being a part of the organising team of Te Pataka o Wairau and for the huge voluntary hours she puts into community groups like Maori Women’s Welfare League and Maori Wardens. “Earlier this year at the end of the first Te Pataka market, Gemma was one of the last people at the venue seen still picking up

rubbish and putting it in the bin,” Ranae says. A Taonga made by Tasman Pounamu Carver, Taonga by Timoti, was presented to Gemma for her aroha and her manaakitanga to the Marlborough Maori community “I feel very blessed to receive this,” Gemma says. “Gemma is all about whanau, she is all about supporting all Iwi and all Maori, no matter where they come from. “We love her for that,” Te Pataka o Wairau project manager Dr Lorraine Eade says. “I’m a community person and I always have been. By Megan Connolly Entries for this year’s Home Industries section of the Marlborough A&P Show are now open. There are several different categories to suit a range of creative tasks such as cooking, needlework, hand craft, knitting and photography. A&P Association committee member Fiona Higgins has been entering her work in the show for around six years, she says. Fiona’s passion is the craft of sewing, and she has been entering the clothes she has made for as long as she has been on the committee. But you can enter anything you’ve made recently or in the past, Fiona says. “It doesn’t have to be brand new,

If you and your family are sick with the flu, keep away from school and work to prevent the spread.

Flu season

Influenza – or the flu – is a virus that spreads quickly from person to person. Symptoms include fever, chills, aches, runny nose, a cough and stomach upset. The flu spreads quickly from person to person through touch and through the air. It’s caused by different strains of the Influenza virus, and currently there are four seasonal viruses circulating globally - influenza A(H1N1), influenza A(H3N2), Influenza B/Yamagata lineage and Influenza B/Victoria lineage. This year the publicly-funded influenza vaccine includes all four strains and health professionals say the best defence is immunisation against the flu. While you’re unwell, stay away from work or school. Look after yourself and your family – rest and fluids. You can spread the flu to people, including your family/whanau and friends, who are at most risk of complications. While general health affects the severity of an infection, the influenza virus is contagious and anyone can become infected. Influenza is more than just a ‘bad cold’. Although some of the symptoms are the same, influenza is usually much more severe. Symptoms of influenza include a cough,

headache, fever or chills, body aches and pains, fatigue and generally feeling miserable. Even if you do not end up in hospital, influenza can keep you in bed for a week or more, preventing you from doing work, sport or just about anything that requires leaving the house. The flu spreads from person to person. The influenza virus is transferred in droplets of moisture expelled through breathing, coughing and sneezing. The virus is spread when a person touches any droplets which contain the influenza virus and then touch their mouth, nose or eyes before washing their hands. Influenza can affect anyone, no matter how fit, active and healthy they may be. Although people with underlying health conditions are most at risk from influenza associated complications, previously healthy people can still become seriously ill an even die. It takes around two weeks to develop immunity once vaccinated. Ideally, immunisation should be carried out before the main influenza activity in May to September. People can be immunised at any time during the influenza season, the vaccine is only free for those in the high-risk groups.

Whooping cough Whooping cough (pertussis) is a highly infectious disease that is spread by coughing and sneezing. It’s caused by bacteria which damage the breathing tubes. Whooping cough can be very serious for babies and children – especially those under 1 year old. If babies catch whooping cough, they: •May not be able to feed or breathe properly. •May become so ill they need to go to hospital. •Could end up with serious complications such as pneumonia and brain damage. When it’s infectious People with whooping cough are infectious from six days after exposure to the bacteria, when symptoms are like a normal cold, to three weeks after the ‘whooping’ cough begins –

unless they are treated with antibiotics. Many babies catch whooping cough from their older siblings or parents – often before they’re old enough to be vaccinated. How common is whooping cough? Most cases of whooping cough occur in adults whose immunity has faded. In these cases, symptoms tend to be less serious, although

the persistent cough can be unpleasant and frustrating. Help stop the spread of whooping cough: •Make sure all your children are up to date with their immunisations. •Keep your baby away from anyone with a cough. •If you have a cough yourself, stay away from babies. •If you’ve got a cough that won’t go away, see your doctor.

Healthline, Pharmacists, GP or GP Practice Nurse, and Urgent After Hours GP offer professional health advice. If you arrive at Wairau Hospital’s Emergency Department with a non-urgent health concern you may be referred to your GP.

The Marlborough Parents Centre (MPC) hosts this highly popular event and every year it gets bigger and better. It’s being held at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 from 10am 2.30pm and promises a fun-filled day for all ages, as well as a huge range of stall sites for people to browse through. There will be everything from beautiful baby clothing and accessories for purchase, through to fitness demonstrations and even a massage station, expo co-ordinator A voucher for a canvas is just one of the many items donated for the Expo's Maddy Robertson says. “There’s been a huge amount of raffles and silent auction.

work put in by the committee and it’s looking to be a great event. “We have a large number of stall holders this year including a good mix of repeat businesses from previous years, as well as a bunch of new and different exhibitors,” she says. One stall holder is coming as far as Invercargill, called Whoopzie Giftz, which specialises in quality handmade infant clothing. Another is ‘Vintage Fairy Tale’, an event management business that helps people to plan unique date nights, kids parties and other special occasions. “Some different things we will have on offer this year will be a photo booth by Oh Snap and we’ve got the Ladies and Lords

Wax Bar on hand to provide some treatments,” Maddy says. For the children there will be an array of fun activities on offer including facepainting, a bouncy castle, a Bunnings DIY table and toys provided by the Blenheim Toy Library. “And don’t forget, the first 350 paying adults through the doors receive some amazing goodie bags with some cool sample products and vouchers in them,” Maddy says. Entry into the Expo costs $2 per person, children under 14 are free and there will be some food items available for purchase. Bring along cash as Eftpos facilities are not guaranteed.

Raffles, auctions and more In addition to the stall sites and fantastic activities on offer, there will also be a number of raffles on offer. Tickets cost $2 each or three for $5 and all proceeds from the raffle and the Expo itself, go towards supporting the Marlborough Parents Centre. Raffle prizes include gro-

cery hampers, firewood, gift baskets and family swim vouchers. There will also be a silent auction on the day and local businesses have been incredibly generous in their support. An example of items in the silent auction include a 16x22inch frame, free en-

Shining a light on first women’s advocate - Mary Ann Muller Blenheim resident Mary Ann Muller was New Zealand’s first women’s rights advocate, but few people know about her role. Zonta member Jeanine Wardman and Cathie Bell are organising an event on Sunday to highlight her role. Broadcaster Kim Hill will interview historian Professor Raewyn Dalziel, who has written about Mary Ann Muller. The event starts at 2pm on Sunday at the Marlborough Convention Centre. Born Mary Ann Wilson in London in 1820, she left an unhappy marriage with two of her three children and moved to New Zealand in 1850. She met Dr Stephen Muller, his wife and four children on the ship, and when Mrs Muller died, she looked after his children with her own in Nelson while he travelled for business. The pair married, and they moved to Blenheim in 1857 so Dr Muller could be resident magistrate for the newly-established Wairau District. Mary Ann was greatly concerned with women’s rights - particularly property rights and the vote. In those days, women lost control of their property to their husbands when they married. Her husband was opposed to women being actively involved in politics, but she became a well-known advocate, writing a nationally-syndicated column under the pseudonym Femmina. In 1869, she wrote a pamphlet, called “An Appeal to the Men of New

Mary Ann Muller Zealand”, arguing against discrimination against women, which received national and international acclaim. It inspired women’s suffrage advocate Kate Sheppard, who arrived in New Zealand later that year, and who led the ultimately successful campaign for women to gain the vote. Despite her husband’s views that women should not be involved in politics, Mary Anne Muller met with many prominent political leaders of the time, such as Edward Stafford, Alfred Domett, Sir William Fox, Sir John Hall, and Sir David Monro, and was an influential networker and lobbyist. Parliament passed laws in 1860 and 1870 improving the position of wives

deserted by their husbands, and in 1867 allowing divorce. In 1884, the Married Women’s Property Act gave women within marriage a legal existence for the first time: it let them hold property, make contracts in their own right, and sue and be sued. In 1893, women won the vote. In Marlborough, about 200 women had signed the suffrage petition, and about 1000 women registered to vote in 1893 - Mary Anne Muller was one of those. In December 1898, seven and a half years after her husband’s death, her identity as ‘Fémmina’ was finally revealed, in a notice in White Ribbon, the newsletter of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Auckland University emeritus professor Raewyn Dalziel has written about Mary Anne Muller, notably for the New Zealand Dictionary of Biography. Cathie says Marlborough is home to many people who have done important things in the world. “I think it’s important we remember them and celebrate their achievements, as inspiration for the young people. Jeanine says the event on Sunday is open to all, and encourages people to come and listen to one of New Zealand’s finest interviewers talk to Jeanine Wardman (left) from Zonta and Cathie Bell from the an expert on Mary Ann Muller. Motocross in honour of teen The 2018 George Holland Memorial Motocross event was held over Saturday and Sunday in the Waihopai Valley, attracting 129 riders from as far as Franz Joseph, Timaru and the North Island. It was organised by Chris Parnwell, Mitch Parnwell and Phil Balcom in honour of local teenager George Holland, an avid motocross rider who passed away last year, aged 19. Mitch and George were good friends and raced together since they were nine-years-old. “Hence this event had huge personal interest for us,” Chris says. Riders were aged as young as four-years and the two-day event “ran like clockwork”. “There were good battles throughout each class. Overall it was a really good Guss Jeffries competing in the MX2 class on Saturday.Photo by Lily-Alyce Vercoe event,” Chris says.
