Formal wows

Les Whiteside

By Celeste Alexander “What a night!” The Combined Colleges Formal was held last Friday night at the Marlborough Convention Centre and ‘what a great success it was’, organisers say. Students made their grand entrances in style, from golf carts and Rolls Royces through to London cabs and even a double decker bus. Thundering hot rods, gleaming classic cars and the more quirky - trucks with open sides where students arrived dancing to their own music, were all part of the incredible show enjoyed by the large crowds that gathered to watch.

Inside was decorated in ancient Greece theme and students danced throughout the night to a live band and DJ. Marlborough Boys’ College head boy, James Hammond says the overall feeling among students was of being “relaxed”. “Everyone enjoyed the more relaxed atmosphere this year and the theme was a hit. “The formal was a huge success. “Thanks to the formal committee for their dedication throughout the year to put on such an amazing event for the senior students. “Also, a big thanks to the

police who did an amazing job managing everyone’s arrival. Like always there were some pretty cool vehicles on show,” James says. There were many different colours and styles worn by students, including gowns with flowing chiffon, satin and suits in a variety of shades. Gowns with splits were trending again this year, and lace detail and pant suits on the girls featured more this year. During the night a number of awards were given out as per formal tradition. Taylor Pass Honey Company beekeeper Sam Lawrence shows a nest of bees to pupils at Blenheim School.

Here’s a job with a sting in it By Bill McElhinney Professional beekeepers need to be tough – they can get stung up to 20 times in a day! Children at Blenheim School discovered this recently when staff from Taylor Pass Honey Company visited to tell the youngsters about bees. September is Bee Aware month, and the Taylor Pass folk were keen to raise awareness of the importance of bees in our food chain. “Many of the things we like to eat need to be pollinated by bees,” Taylor Pass operations manager Rex Butt told the youngsters. Even chocolate milk? Yep, even chocolate milk.

If the bees don’t pollinate the clovers, there’s no grass for the cows and no milk. And the wild African bees pollinate the cocoa tree, which provides the cocoa beans from which chocolate is made. The youngsters asked lots of questions, and in the process learned that bees have different colours, they only sting when they are frightened, and the professional beekeepers often get stung every day, sometimes many times. Bees don’t live long, Rex says, about six or seven weeks and a bit longer when they’re dormant over winter. And the hard working honey bees

also face occupational hazards. “Sometimes when they’re out collecting nectar, the bees don’t make it home because they get eaten by a bird or a wasp,” Rex says. One of the easiest ways people can help bees is by planting bee-friendly gardens in both urban and rural spaces. Bees need food so they can help pollinate our food. Bees will forage on wildflowers and other bee-friendly plants for nectar and pollen, which provide carbohydrates and protein for growth and energy. Well-nourished bees are more capable of fending off disease and parasites.

Another way you can bee-friendly is by not spraying your garden with harmful pesticides. First, consider whether spraying is necessary. If you choose to spray, there are some important things to remember. Do not spray when plants are in flower or bees are present. It is also best to spray early in the morning or at sunset. You can also provide fresh, pesticide-free drinking water for bees. Fill a saucepan of water, put pebbles or twigs in the water for bees to rest on while they drink.

After an audit of the new Eltham and Beaver roads cycleway, the Marlborough District Council will reverse the street priority at the Beaver Road and Dillon Street intersection. “There is a fair amount of non-local traffic using this route - it appears some drivers have not recognised or understood the new intersection layout.” council assets and services manager Richard Coningham says. The road priority at Beaver Rd and Dillon Street will revert back to its previous layout, giving Dillon St the right of way, causing minimal disruption for cyclists.

Confidence down A fall in the number of tourists to the region, especially to Nelson and Marlborough, slowing house prices and a pickup in regional unemployment have seen households in Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast less optimistic about the economic outlook for their region over the coming year, according to the Westpac-McDermott Miller Regional Economic Confidence survey for the September quarter. The Consumer Confidence Index for the Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast region slipped to 107 in the September quarter, from 109 in June. The survey says consumers in the region remain pessimistic about the prospects for the New Zealand economy, but are feeling marginally better about their own financial circumstances over the next 12 months.

Music artist to finish tour in Blenheim By Celeste Alexander Rising country musician Matthew McNeilly and his wife Amelia Richards are back in New Zealand touring and are heading “home” to Blenheim for a show. Matthew, born and raised in Blenheim, lives in Australia where he and Amelia have been working on their music and touring as ‘NeillyRich’. The couple have only just returned from Nashville, Tennessee where they spent over two weeks recording with The Rukkus Room studios, well

known for recording some of the music industry’s biggest names. “It was a dream come true really. It’s always been our dream to record there just like the likes of Taylor Swift through to Allan Jackson. Everyone there was amazing and really nice... we had an amazing time,” Matthew says. The couple wrote some new songs in Nashville which will be going on their new record, which is yet to be named. “I’ve literally just stepped off the plane back home and am about to get on another and fly to New Zealand, so the music

is all very fresh,” Matthew says. NeillyRich had been invited to perform at the Morrinsville Country Music Club’s annual Spectacular Show on Saturday, then decided to “make a tour of it”. “We will be coming to Blenheim’s Yard Bar on October 5 and playing a bit of everything. It’s our last NZ tour for our last album, Here Now Forever. The Yard Bar partly sponsored that record so it’s only natural that we finish our tour there,” he says. The show starts at 10pm. Matthew McNeilly and his wife Amelia, of NeillyRich are coming to Blenheim to perform.

Carpentry apprentice Shanon Bettridge, who is employed by Blenheim’s George Guthrie Construction Ltd, has been named the third place winner in the Upper South Island Registered Master Builders CARTERS 2018 Apprentice of the Year. The results were announced at an awards evening held in Marlborough recently. Registered Master Builders Chief Executive David Kelly says that Apprentice of the Year showcases the attractiveness of a career in the trades. “Apprenticeships offer the chance to earn as you learn and be a part of an industry with strong job prospects and opportunities for growth. With the construction skills shortage currently facing the building and construction industry, the value of an apprenticeship has never been Shanon Bettridge (19) of Blenheim, with his third higher,” he says. placed certificate. New liner fixes leaky park pond By Bill McElhinney Blenheim model boat enthusiasts are smiling again after their pond at Brayshaw Park, which sprang a leak last year, has been repaired. “The pond is 60 years old, and it was built on what was the old Blenheim rubbish dump,” Marlborough Associated Modellers Society president Philip Gibbison says. “We’ve patched previous leaks, but this last one was a bit more serious.” Resurfacing the whole pond was the ideal solution, but could have cost up to $100,000, which was money the society doesn’t have, Philip says. And a patch-up meant the pond was likely to leak again. But thanks to some generous support the pond, which has been out of action since last year, now has a new liner and is being used again by the modellers and members of the public. Christchurch Firm Viking Containment, which builds water storage dams in Marlborough, came up with a new pond liner. “They only charged us for the cost of materials and Renwick Transport brought the equipment up from Christchurch for free, and we also got some funding from the Redwood Trust and the Marlborough District Council,” Phil says. “The pond gets a lot of use, not only by club members but also

members of the public who bring their boats to the park,” Phil says. The Modellers Society is a non-profit organisation and the members build and operate model aircraft, boats and trains. The popular miniature railway and model boat pond are maintained by club members at their own expense. “There are between 12-15 active members of the model boat branch,” Phil says. “Sailing is usually on the first and third Sunday of every month, from 1pm until 4pm. And there are pond yachts (non radio controlled) available for visitors to play with, for a small fee.” The pond was first used by people flying control-line seaplanes and tethered speedboats. Model boat regattas were also held at the Taylor Dam, which drew large crowds in the late 1960s.

Chloe Hackett (8), Luca Vesely (9) and Emily Lawrence (7) were excited to recieve their new St John Youth Vehicle last week which will take them around to competitions and to training events.

New vehicle for St Johns By Megan Connolly The young students of St Johns Penguins and Cadets will be riding around in style after receiving their new youth vehicle last Friday. The 12 seater bus will be used to transport the youngsters to competitions and other events, Divisional Manager for Youth, Jane Donald, says. “It’s amazing. It’s going to make getting around so much easier,” Jane says. Prior to getting the bus, there had to be several cars and parents “roped in” when the cadets went away, Jane says. The first big trip in the bus will be next week when St John stu-

dents will travel down to Living Springs, which is an hour outside Christchurch, for the regional competitions. “It’s got the room for luggage and everything,” Jane says. The money for the vehicle was raised from their St John shop and sponsorship from the Marlborough District Council, Harcourts and Redwood Trust, area administrator for St John, Gayle Chambers, says. “The beauty is that when the cadets go away, we don’t have to hire a vehicle any more,” Gayle says. Look out for the St John cadets in their new yellow and white bus.

Now is definitely too early so probably the middle of November. I like to put mine up a week before.

Everyone knows when Christmas is so maybe two to three weeks before Christmas. I put up mine a week, sometimes a day, beforehand.

Middle of November probably. I put mine up a week before.

Now is too early but middle of November is good.

It’s definitely too early now to put them up. Definitely not before December, too soon and all the pine needles fall off the tree.

October is too early but the middle of November is good. But you should take them down before New Years.

Driver not at fault Dear Ed, On Tuesday evening a small dog was accidentally run over and killed on Arthur street. As the owner of that dog I want to tell the driver it was entirely the dog that was at fault. I do not know who you are but please do not blame yourself in any way. I also extend my sympathy to the two little girls that were in the car and witnessed the event. I hope time will help heal the pain for you. I am sorry I did not take your details. A fairer tax system Dear Ed, Michael Cullen and the tax working group are floating, yet again, the idea of a capital gains tax. Hurrah! Why is this a good thing? Because for years Kiwis have believed the smart thing to do with their money is to use it as collateral, borrow a lot more, put it all into the property market, live off the rents and get rich off the tax-free capital gains. No jobs are created; no tax is paid; the money goes offshore in the form of

interest to whatever Australian bank has loaned us the money. People on the minimum wage pay tax on everything they earn. People living in poverty pay tax on everything they buy. Nurses pay tax; teachers pay tax; but people who own vast property portfolios, or derive their wealth from owning financial assets can pay virtually no tax. Many of those who benefit from living in this great country with stable insti-

tutions and modern infrastructure contribute the least towards maintaining those things. And that includes our MPs, most of who are multiple property owners. They have more houses than most because they earn more than most. Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas, so don’t expect any changes in the foreseeable future. Taxpayer Blenheim

Dragged down by the Nat - Labs Dear Ed, Snipers, when captured, frequently don’t make it to the POW cage. When I read snide comments fired from the cover of anonymity, I relate to that action., So Winston is bad news? Over the three decades since Rogernomics I’ve watched the NatLabs and the LabNats between them drag down one of the most fortunate countries on Earth. Now I see the party which had power for the past nine years constantly telling me how, if we’d given them yet another term, things would be better. Yeah right! I could write a book about the simple steps that so obviously ought to have been taken. But the Establishment, high above the quagmire, were too well insulated from our cares. Now it is desperately late to start dealing with the scores of problems we have brought on ourselves. I’ll warrant that the no doubt National Party supporter shareholders who lost their money in Mainzeal will be watching the High Court trial with keen interest. Bill Holvey Blenheim

Empty spaces makes sense for living By Stuart Smith MP for Kaikoura. There is a growing level of support behind the idea of repopulating the many empty spaces that sit above Blenheim’s central city shops. In the past few weeks, I have had quite a few discussions with constituents about this topic, and the general consensus seems to be that we should be filling these spaces – and people are questioning why it has not happened yet. My office on Scott Street is located below a large first floor space that has sat empty since last year after a business of about 50 people moved out. A few weeks ago, this prompted me to publicly

Stuart Smith.

suggest that we develop this space, and all the other first storey spaces around town, into apartments or other accommodation facilities. It makes so much sense. Our housing crunch is ongoing, particularly as a result of our burgeoning

wine industry that requires more and more labour. Blenheim, like most other New Zealand centres, is what I describe as a hollow egg. All our residential areas, motels and several large retailers have been built around the CBD, leaving nobody to populate the middle. Central city apartments would address these issues to an extent and, more than that, it would go a very long way to revitalising our CBD, which is an ongoing issue in itself. A permanent central population means our CBD doesn’t empty out at the end of every day as workers, and customers, disappear off to the suburbs.

Businesses would benefit, and our town centre would once again become a vibrant hub, every day of the week. Having apartment living as an option will appeal to a market of people who do not see themselves living a suburban lifestyle, Above and below two large commercial buildings in Scott St with property that requires that could provide upstairs accommodation in the CBD. maintenance and a lifestyle that requires a car to get into town. There are so many benefits. I, too, continue to actively question why the upper levels of our CBD languish, empty, when there is so much to gain from filling them up. This is an important discussion that we must all continue to pursue.

Good score for MDC services Electric vehicles visit Omaka Electric vehicle owners got together at the Omaka Aviation Centre recently to share experiences and learn more about our cars. The number of EVs in Marlborough is steadily growing and there are currently 20 members on the EV group’s list.

Funding for toilet upgrades Marlborough District Council has been granted $668,000 in funding from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment for five projects around Marlborough. T h e p r oje ct s a r e : Anakiwa toilets upgrade, $112,000; Havelock toilets upgrade, $194,000;

Okiwi, Torea and Te Mahia Bay toilet upgrades, $118,000; Rai Valley new public toilets, $134,000; Collins Memorial Reserve toilets and picnic sh elt e r, Ko r om i ko, $110,000. This follows an award of $195,000 government funding in August for toi-

let and car park upgrades. This is great news, Deputy Mayor Terry Sloan says. “Our tourism spending and traffic flows are up and we expect continued visitor growth as more people discover what Marlborough has to offer.”

By Bill McElhinney Marlborough residents are pretty happy with Marlborough District Council services, particularly the drinking water supply, sewerage and community services. Every year the council undertakes an independent annual survey to identify service satisfaction levels and performance scores. “Our overall satisfaction score is slightly down on last year, we’re well ahead of the New Zealand benchmark of 55% per cent,” council chief executive Mark Wheeler says. The three top rated services in 2018 are: Drinking water - 8.2 out of 10; sewerage - 7.9 out of 10;

community facilities - 7.5 out of 10. The three lowest rated services in 2018 are: Democratic process - 5.6 out of 10; Environmental policy and monitoring - 6.1 out of 10; biosecurity - 6.2 out of 10. “A new question this year - on whether people are satisfied with council’s communications achieved a good result at 75 per cent, against the national benchmark of 53 per cent,” Mark says. “I’d like to thank our hard working staff for their achievements. They often go the extra mile to deliver an excellent customer experience.”

Boys’ College Leo’s raise cash By Megan Connolly The students at Marlborough Boys’ College Leo Club have raffled firewood to raise around $800 to be split between two charities SPCA, and St John. Each year the Leo Club raises funds and provides sausages to numerous community events and charities. Later on this year the Leo Club will again hold a sausage sizzle at the annual Mistletoe Market, club president Michael Mason says. Te Akau Moanaroa is a year nine student and one of the newer members of the club, having joined at the start of the year. He has enjoyed his time so far as part of the committee, he says. “I like getting to see the smiles from everyone when you hand them over what you’ve raised,” Te Akau says.

Lynette’s a busy lady Netballer, Mum, accountant and Blenheim Business Association chair: Lynette Rayner uses her talents to aid the community. She talks to Bill McElhinney. Lynette Rayner moved around a lot as a youngster. Her dad was a foreman with the Ministry of Works and was involved in constructing hydro dams. The family came to Blenheim 30 years ago after losing their Dad to illness. After having a bit of a look around the world and what it had to offer, Lynette married husband Larry and they became involved with a transport start-up company. After selling that Lynette went on to continue studying accountancy extra-murally while working in the industry, eventually becoming the owner/director of Blenheim accountancy firm Accounting Plus. “I enjoy accounting, especially the interaction with my clients,” Lynette says. “I like people, and I like hearing their stories.” She also got involved with governance, firstly through her sporting interests, and was fortunate to receive a significant Sport NZ Women on Governance scholarship over three years that allowed extensive governance opportunities and training. She is a life member of the St Mary’s Old Girls’ netball club and has years of experience in the sport as player, umpire, coach, and administrator. She served as chairperson of Marlborough Netball and had

been a member of that board since 2008. Then in 2015 Lynette became the first Marlburian to sit on the Mainland Netball Board. The Mainland zone covers Canterbury (north of the Waitaki River), Tasman, Marlborough and West Coast regions and oversees both community netball and the Tactix, their professional national netball league side. She was chair of Marlborough Netball during the consultation process for shifting the courts from Horton Park to the new Lansdowne Park sports hub, a move which Lynette says has gone well. “Although we didn’t initially realise it, it was time to give netball a new lease of life,” she says. Having a business and owning property in the CBD got Lynette involved in the Blenheim Business Association, where she initially served as treasurer. Now as the association chair, she is helping spearhead the Marlborough Mile and the $200,000 revamp of Market Place with the enhanced and enlarged grass pods, better lighting and phone charging stations. The work is funded by the Marlborough District Council and follows on from the revamp of Bythell Place, the pop-up parks and the steel planters which have generated positive feedback about Market Place. “The Blenheim Business Asso-

ciation has a shared vision of creating a central business district which is the heart of the region,” Lynette says. “Blenheim’s town centre should be a hub for Marlborough’s thriving industries, events and recreational activities, showcasing our retail, dining and cultural experiences.” The renovations are part of a bigger plan to refresh Blenheim’s central business district, Lynette says. The next stage is the Marlborough Mile, which will create six interactive sites around town and will kick off before the end of the year. As a mother of two youngsters, Annalice and William, Lynette

also has got involved with school governance, initially at Springlands School, then becoming deputy chair on the Marlborough Boys’ College Board of trustees, looking after the finance and property portfolios. She has also been part of the Colleges Co-Location team. “The community has given us a great deal over the years,” Lynette says, “so it’s good to have the opportunity to give something back. “I love my job, and it would be easy just to stay on at work, so it’s good to have other interests, other things to do. “But I make sure I don’t commit

to anything that I can’t do properly.” It sounds like a busy life: there’s even a range of pets at home to care for – three cats, two dogs and numerous fish. So what about time to relax and unwind? “I head up the Wither Hills,” Lynette says. “We’re so fortunate to have the farm park on our back door step. It’s a great place to unwind and relax. “I go and sit on a seat in the peace and quiet; no phone, no distractions, a time to be mindful, to be grounded.”

Simply the Breast to connect By Megan Connolly The Marlborough breast cancer survivor dragon boat team, Simply the Breast, has offered women exercise, community and support for 10 years. The team is made up of women who are breast cancer survivors and ‘support paddlers’ who go out every Sunday morning on the Wairau River in their majestic dragon boat. The boat seats 10 paddlers, with one person sitting at the front with a drum. The name comes from the often decorated Chinese dragon head at the front and the tail at the rear of the boat The boats originated from China’s southern Guangdong Province and were originally

made of teak, but are now mostly made of carbon fibre. Margaret Hockey has been a part of the Simply the Breast team since its inception, when a study found that upper body movement and exercise was playing a vital role in breast cancer recovery. “You just get hooked on the fun aspect. You’re with a bunch of people with the same experience as you,” Margaret says. Recently long-term paddler Denise Neal travelled to Vienna for the World Dragon Boating Competition, where she competed with a composite team. Simply the Breast is made up of women with levels of skill levels and experience.

“There aren’t as many survivor paddlers, so we’ve had support paddlers for the past couple of seasons, otherwise we don’t have enough paddlers,” Denise says. “But the fact is it’s a sport for any age. No experience is necessary.” Siobhan Skinner has only paddled twice with the team and travels from Canvastown to be among like-minded women. “There’s something about being on the water, around nature, and with each other as the drum pounds in time with the paddlers,” Siobhan says. If anyone would like to join the team contact stbdragons@gmail.com or call Denise on 021 131 2213.

Science fair success for Bohally pupils By Bill McElhinney Smok ing will have a detrimental effect on your circulatory system. If you want to know more, ask Bohally pupil Will Flynn. And much of the plastic we dump finds its way into the ocean, where it doesn’t break down and has a detrimental effect on marine life, Bohally pupil Jesse Theodor says. Will and Jess are among the Bohally pupils who entered the annual Marlborough Lines Science and

Technology Fair and won prizes for their exhibits. “We entered 57 exhibits and won 43 prizes,” Bohally head of science Phillip Johnson says. “Eight of our groups achieved above and beyond awards. This was probably our most successful year at the Fair. “Many of the projects involved the environment or body systems,” Phillip says. “There was a lot of research and inquiry and as a result of our efforts the

school won a $1500 prize, which we’ll use to fund our science resources.” The Science Fair has been an annual event since the 1960s, and is now a partnership of Blenheim Lions, local school teachers, community sponsors and the major sponsor, Marlborough Lines. The event gives youngsters a chance to be a scientist and do experiments to find about their world, or be a technologist who solves problems that people may have.

With more space, more style, more safety, more features, more performance and more peace of mind, the all-new Santa Fe builds on New Zealand’s favourite family SUV in every single way.

BLUE TEAM

The Sun

Saturday, September 29, 2018

Blue Team coach Raymond Madsen and Red Team coach Mike Newton.

Boxers are ready By Celeste Alexander The fights have been set, the boxers have faced off with their opponents and all that’s left now is to count down the days to the Fight For Life Education Marlborough charity boxing event this Saturday. It’s being held at the Marlborough Convention Centre in front of hundreds of people, kicking off at 6.30pm. In the main arena room there will be 450 people watching and in the room next door the action will be live streamed on a big screen to 300 people. For those who missed out on tickets this year, you can still watch the live streaming action at the Redwood Tavern. Hosts Mike and Kerry Neal will have a special menu and drinks specials on the night. There has been months of preparation involved in choosing this year’s boxing competitors and getting them

trained for the ‘Fight Night’, and the best part is that it’s all in the name of charity. The hardworking Life Education Marlborough Fight For Life committee have worked tirelessly on putting together this fantastic event, with proceeds going back to the Trust so it can continue to offer its health programme to children in preschool, primary and intermediate schools. The Trust is completely locally funded and all funds raised stay within the local community. Last but not least are the ha rdwork ing coach ing teams. In the Red corner is coach Mike Newton and his trainers Darren Aldridge, Reon Materoa and Jarden TaukiriWaaka. In the Blue corner is coach Raymond Madsen and his trainers Ray Ferris, Sam Sheehan and Gavin Thomas. Good luck to both teams!

Vows that make you laugh and cry Wedding vows can be an emotional, funny or as traditional as you like. Here are some examples of vows exchanged between husbands and wives. Non-denominational wedding vows. I, (name), commit myself to you, (name of significant other), as (wife/husband) to learn and grow with, to explore and adventure with, to respect you in everything as an equal partner, in the foreknowledge of joy and pain, strength and weariness, direction and doubt, for all the

risings and settings of the sun. We tie these knots to symbolize our connection to one another. They represent our trust in each other and our combined strength together. Humorous wedding vows. With the deepest joy, I promise to cherish you, to support and honour you, to frustrate and challenge you, and to share with you the wonderful moments in life. And, someday, if the stars align, I may even let you win an argument.

Emotional wedding vows.

You, my darling are my best friend, my playmate, my confidante – and my greatest gift. You are the love of my life, someone who always make me happier than I could ever have imagined and you have made me a better person than I ever thought I could be. I feel truly blessed that you chose me – and that I get to share my life with you – and that you have chosen to share yours with me.”

HOME VISITS & PICTON CLINIC Visit me at Renwick Medical Centre, last Wednesday of each month.

Hearing loss for most people generally develops over many years, with the effects becoming apparent only gradually, this makes it difficult for those affected to recognise that they are suffering from a hearing impairment. One of the leading causes of hearing loss is excessive noise exposure, with noise induced hearing loss more likely to be a hazard for those who work in a noisy environment. This is supported through a study conducted by Kurmis, A. P., & Apps, S. A. (2007) that showed that 37% of all adult hearing loss cases could be attributed to workplace noise1. Major companies often take precautions to help prevent noise induced hearing loss, however a small farmer or panel beater may not have these precautions in place and this can cause problems later in life. This is supported by a study of 586 farm workers in New Zealand’s southland district, most workers studied had a moderate hearing loss, with a significant minority having significant hearing loss3. So what should you do if you have experienced frequent loud noises at work and are concerned about potential hearing loss? There are five signs that indicate you may have a hearing loss. 1. Do you find it difficult to understand phone conversations clearly? 2. Does your family complain about the volume when you are listening to the radio or television? 3. Do you find it difficult to follow a conversation in noisy environments?

4. Do you often feel exhausted after family celebrations because listening is such an effort? 5. Do you hear better when you can look at the person talking to you? If any of these signs apply to you, don’t endure it, you can and should do something about it, and you may be eligible for financial support. The New Zealand Government’s Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) will provide financial support for injury related hearing loss, which, depending on the level of injury, can include fully funded hearing aids. At House of Hearing we help people with hearing loss navigate through the ACC claims process every day. If you think you may have hearing loss and feel it may have been caused through your work or an injury give our local hearing experts a call on 03 768 5528 References 1) Excessive noise contributes to 37% of all adult causes of hearing loss, http://psycnet. apa.org/record/2007-13991-001 2) NZ industries: http://archive.stats. govt.nz/browse_for_stats/snapshots-of-nz/ yearbook/people/employment/nz-do.aspx 3) A survey of 586 workers across 60 farms reported that most farmers have moderate hearing loss with a significant minority with a high risk. https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/ Noise-exposure-and-hearing-loss-in-agriculture-a-s-McBride-Firth/2b5cc9c94d09 eadb42c52afb4e88571c91d272f5

Football dreams come true for former Boys’ College lad By Megan Connolly Nineteen-year-old, Alex Connor-McClean, is beginning to make a name for himself in the world of New Zealand Football. Recently the ex-Marlborough Boys’ College student has been playing in Auckland as striker for the Birkenhead United team. Birkenhead United recently beat Western Suburbs to win the prestigious Chatham Cup. The Chatham Cup is New Zealand’s premier knockout tournament in men’s association football and is played for annually. Alex relocated to Auckland in January this year after he was approached while playing on a scholarship at Nelson College. It was a big leap but it was a great way to progress, Alex says. “The season started really good. In our first game, I scored two goals and we won three to one.
