By Megan Connolly Margery Rickerby celebrated her 95th birthday in style last week, taking a ride in a car that is only just younger than her! The Model A Ford she rode in is a 1928 model. If you’ve done your maths right, you’ll know that means Margery is older than the car she went for a ride in. Born in 1923, Margery is still sharp as a tack and was all smiles as she was helped aboard the vintage Model A. Continued on Page 2. Margery goes for a spin on her 95th Continued from page 1. Sitting in the Model A brought back many memories for Margery, like the time she went for her driver’s licence driving a 1928 Plymouth. “My husband and I owned the car. It had a beautiful interior design,” Margery says. The classic Model A that Margery rode in was brought into the country for its durability and capability to handle the rough unsealed roads of the day. Allie Moores, owner of the car and friend of Margery’s son, Pete, purchased the car 23 years ago simply because she liked that she could go off road and vintage rally drive with it. “Many older people remember their family having one on their farm,” Allie says It was Pete’s idea to get his Mum a spin in his friend’s car. “Mum has always been a bit of

a petrol head,” Pete says. For Margery’s 85th birthday she dressed up in leathers, hopped on the back of a Harley Davidson, and was taken for a ride. “We went really fast, it was lovely!” Margery says. “She always hated me having a bike, but she’s always been up for anything,” Pete says. The sharp 95 year old credits her long life to good habits. “I’ve never eaten rubbish. I don’t smoke or drink,” Margery says. Family and friends finished off the celebration with a party and a nice lunch back at Witherlea Lifecare. With all of this excitement, It gets you wondering, what’s next for Margery’s next major birthday. “I don’t know! Maybe a ride in a helicopter,” Margery says.

By Megan Connolly The Picton Dawn Chorus has one month left of their Bait, Set and Check initiative. The September winner, Kyla Spence, bought one of the Dawn Chorus $10 traps and recorded her catch online in The Urban Rat Project. Kyla has been working as a professional trapper for the last couple of years but her ‘nil catch’ win came Kyla Spence, the winner of the September Bait, Set and Check from her own backyard. “I’ve always been aware initiative run by the Picton Dawn Chorus.

Last month the Dawn Chorus recorded 115 new entry data points into their system compared to the 70 to 80 average of previous months, according to Dawn Chorus project coordinator Siobhan Browning. September saw the project catch 12 mice, nine rats and possums, and one stoat. The rest were nill catches like Kyla’s. “It’s useful to know about nil catches because you

Night walk for a good cause The Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is coming back and the Society is hoping the return of the night-time walk will get more people involved. Registrations for the Relay for Life are now open. The last two events saw fewer people take part, so organisers have decided to hold the special challenge overnight again. The Relay For Life Marlborough 2019 will take place from February 23-24 at Giesen Sports & Events Centre, in Renwick, between 4pm and 6am.

On Sunday, October 28 the final Second-Hand Sunday for 2018 will take place. Register your address in advance if you have goods to give away. Put out a Second-Hand Sunday sign (grey leaflet from Council) at your letterbox on the day so people know you have items to give away, and leave your items at your letterbox or driveway. Salad not so pricey

Marlborough Camera Club members had success at the recent Seddon Shield annual competition. From left: Trish Brown, Eunice Belk, Rosie Darling, Denise Manning and Iain Galloway.

Lettuce prices fell 45 percent in last month to an average of $1.81 a head, Stats NZ reported. “Prices reached an all-time high of $5.42 for a 500g head of lettuce in July, due to poor weather. But since then we’ve had two major price falls, which meant lettuce prices reached an unseasonably low level this September,” consumer prices manager Geraldine Duoba says. Vegetable prices fell in September, influenced by lower prices for lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers. However, meat and poultry prices rose, influenced by higher prices for beef and chicken.

Over 50 years of Bridge for Robin

Robin Young was recently honoured as a life member of the New Zealand Bridge Association for over 50 years of service to the game.

By Megan Connolly Robin Young has recently been honoured as a life member by the New Zealand Bridge Association for over 50 years of contribution to the game of bridge. The 83 year old has been playing bridge since he was about 10 years old in his home 27 miles from Palmerston North. “My parents wanted to play bridge but had nowhere to go or anyone to play with. We didn’t want to go an hour into town in those days,” Robin says. The first bridge club he joined

was the Wanganui Bridge Club, where he discovered that “bridge clubs didn’t really know how to play bridge.” By the mid 1970’s Robin and his wife had relocated to Marlborough in search of dryer and warmer weather. Not long after, two of the local bridge clubs merged, creating Marlborough Bridge Club. “They wanted me to be president because I was new to town and no one knew me,” Robin says, As well as spending over 50 years on the bridge committee, he has also spent 10 years on

the national committee. For the last 12 years he has also been the secretary for Marlborough Bridge Club, although “only temporarily”, Robin says. “I like to think it’s still only temporary but nobody else does!” Robin continues to play bridge and compete in tournaments even now. “I like the challenge of it. “It’s like any sort of puzzle, there’s the challenge to get it right. “You can play bridge a lot longer than you can play cricket or football.”

Golden ticket celebrates Blenheim Toyota 100,000 theatre-goers GREAT SUMMER DEALS

By Bill McElhinney It was almost like a scene from Willy Wonka: There was a bottle of bubbles, a bunch of balloons and a golden ticket waiting for Blenheim Mum Emma Morrow when she arrived at the ASB Theatre with her two boys on Thursday. Emma had brought Toby, two, and Henry, four, to see the Mr Science Magical Science Tour, a fun science show presented by Sterling Cathman, a specialist primary science teacher who has been working with kids and teachers for the past 10 years in schools around NZ. Emma didn’t know it, but she was the 100,000th person to buy a show ticket at the ASB Theatre. She was called up on stage before the show and presented with a golden ticket,

which will allow her to get two free tickets to five shows of her choice at the theatre next year. “We wanted to celebrate this milestone,” theatre manager Andrew Scott says. “Since the theatre opened two-and-a-half years ago, we’ve sold 100,000 show tickets. “That’s not counting the thousands of conference visitors who have used the theatre. We’ve probably had 200,000 people through the facility since it opened.” Emma, a regular theatre-goer, was thrilled with ticket, wine and balloons. “We love coming to the theatre,” Emma says. “We came to Mary Poppins and we’ve been to quite a few shows. It’s marvellous!” “It’s great to be celebrating this at a children’s show,”

Andrew says. “After all, that’s what the theatre is for – our children and local groups.” Next year promises to be an even bigger year for the theatre, Andrew says, with a number of international acts coming and along with a wide range of touring shows. “And because we’ve got this facility, the Royal New Zealand Ballet is committed to coming here every year,” Andrew says. In the meantime work is progressing on the final stage of the theatre project, The Anderson Theatre, a multi-functional venue which should be completed by the middle of next year. It will be a boutique theatre for concerts, breakout sessions, exhibitions, meetings and seminars on a smaller scale.

Life jacket use ‘encouraging’ New research shows recreational boaties are behaving more safely, but Maritime NZ is warning them not to slip up on their good work this summer. Lifejacket wearing behaviour is steady, more boaties are checking the weather, taking two ways to call for help, and avoiding alcohol when going out on the water, Maritime NZ Deputy Director Sharyn Forsyth says. “This survey is a good indicator of how prepared boaties are in the run up to Labour Day weekend, which is

traditionally when boaties get back on the water,” Sharon says. Lifejackets remain the most prevalent form of safety device taken on boating trips and the number of boaties wearing their lifejackets all, or most of the time, on the water, remains stable at 75 per cent. “Most encouraging are the significant increases from last year in the three other risk areas - checking the weather, taking communications and avoiding alcohol before going out on the water,” Sharyn says.

I really liked the Documentary Most Unknown. They get nine different scientists together and look at interesting things around the world.

The newest Mamma Mia movie. I downloaded all the music as soon as I got home!

The Nun. But it wasn’t as good as the other ones.

I like to watch movies from my home country so probably a Russian movie.

St Andrews says thanks St Andrews would like to thanks all those who took part in their Garden Tour on October 5 and 6. We were blessed with two glorious days that enabled everyone to wander through all the beautiful gardens. We thank all those who “loaned” us their gardens for the tour, those who helped and all those who bought tickets to enable them to take part in the tour. In all a most successful and happy two days, so thank you. The raffle, which was donated by Bunnings, was drawn last Monday and the winner was Daphne Radmill, whose garden had been included in the tour. St Andrews Garden Tour Committee

Apartments in the CBD Dear Ed, Great idea to encourage people to come into apartments in the CBD. However, this has to be a package deal and let’s not forget the environment in which we are asking people to live. For example, pets. The council needs to have an holistic view of these developments and the potential needs to a new style of

Simon says Dear Ed, I wanted to laugh out loud when I heard National Party leader Simon Bridges on National Radio saying he wanted teachers to be paid more.

This from the leader of the party that has, for years, rebuffed teachers’ pay claims and treated the educational sector with general disdain. Does he think we voters suffer from some form of short-term memory loss?

Give us some wheelie bins Dear Ed, With regard to Confused writing in to The Sun regarding recycling. Blenheim needs to join the rest of the world and have adequate sized wheelie bins for both recyclables and land fill, not the present black bags and open crates. These bins are loaded onto the trucks without manual lifting. Rubbish will not blow out of them. The recyclables need to be sorted by machine at a central depot, not by men in the back of a moving truck. Most of society is moving away from single use plastic bags, yet thousands of these black ones issued by the Council are going to landfill each week. And, while I’m at it, chlorinate and fluoridate your water too. Concerned Long term Visitor Blenheim

Get a grip, petrolheads! Dear Ed, It’s past time to stop whinging about petrol prices and start facing up to some harsh reality. The outcry over petrol prices has come at the same time as the release of the latest IPCC report on climate change. The report, which most seem to want to ignore, is stronger in its language than earlier reports and says we have a decade to make drastic changes in our fossil fuel use and other emissions, or suffer the consequences of drastic climate change. What sort of a world do you want to leave your children and grandchildren? It’s time to make some changes, folks. Better public transport, more freight on rail and sea and less on the roads and get out of the car and on your bike. You’ll do yourself, and our planet, a favour! Concerned Granddad Blenheim

Rien moved by music and song Marlborough man Rien Wagenvoort has been choral singing for much of his life, but as he tells Bill McElhinney, a performance next month with the Marlborough Singers is likely to be a moving experience. There have been many highlights in Rien Wagenvoort’s years of choral singing, but an upcoming performance with the Marlborough Singers will be both moving and testing, Rien says. The Marlborough Singers will be performing “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace” by British composer Karl Jenkins, in recognition that this year marks the 100th year of Armistice Day. Armistice Day is commemorated every year on November 11 to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War 1 and Germany for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War 1. The Marlborough Singers will join with the members of the Marlborough District Brass Band and guest soloists under musical direction by Robert Tucker for the performance. Guest soloists include Wellington-based soprano Barbara Paterson, Manase Latu, a finalist in the 2018 Lexus Song Quest, Marlborough mezzo-soprano Elin Tomos and James Harrison from NZ Opera. The Marlborough Singers will also be joined by students from the Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ Colleges. Rien has sung The Armed Man before in combined concerts with Nelson singers and musicians. “You know you’ve sung something,” he says. “It’s an emotional piece and you’re quite spent by the end of it.”

Rien came to New Zealand from Holland when he was five, and was surrounded by music at home. “My mother, Jo Wagenvoort, was a founding member of the Blenheim Choral Society,” Rien says. “I started selling programmes at Choral Society concerts when I was 11, and then I ran the box office in the old Blenheim Town Hall. “There was always some involvement – sorting music, programmes – I grew up with singing.” Rien left Blenheim to study at Canterbury University, graduating with a science degree, majoring in chemistry.

It’s an emotional piece and you’re quite spent by the end of it For years has worked as a paint chemist with Marlborough firm Equus Industries, which specialises in manufacturing industrial waterproof coatings. “The Blenheim Choral Society went into recess for a few years,” Rien says. “But when I came back to Blenheim from university, in 1973, the choral society was resurrected under the leadership of Marios Sophocleous, who was the

deputy principal at Marlborough Girls’ College and a talented musician and music teacher.” Rien, a baritone, became secretary of the Choral Society and was president for about 20 years. Some memorable performances he recalls include singing Vivaldi’s Gloria in the old Civic Theatre and performing Felix Mendelssohn’s powerful choral masterpiece Elijah with the Nelson singers. “Robert Tucker was the soloist at this performance,” Rien says. “Now he’s the musical director for the Marlborough Singers, and our singing skills have improved immensely under his direction.” The Marlborough Singers have been rehearsing weekly for the performance, and Rien is looking forward to it. “I’ve always had the vision to

have The Armed Man performed here with all local people,” Rien says. “When I found a copy of the music that had been written for a brass band, that sparked the idea. “It’s appropriate, because it is a military piece and having the band is really appropriate.” The work is an anti-war piece and although it is based on the Catholic Mass, it incorporates words from other religious and historical sources, including the Islamic Call to Prayer, the Bible and writer Sankichi Toge, who survived the Hiroshima bombing but died some years later of leukaemia. The work will also be performed with a video display. “It is telling the story of the journey towards war, the agony and misery of the war itself, and

the hope for peace that follows the conflict,” Rien says. “There is a lot of meaning and emotion in it, and the audience usually comes out quite moved.” It’s a busy life for Rien, who also works with the heritage section of Blenheim Smart and Connected, and is president of the Marlborough Historical Society. But performing this work on the anniversary of Armistice Day is something he and the other performers are really looking forward to. To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day, the Marlborough Singers and members from the Marlborough District Brass Band will perform The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace on Sunday, November 11, at 4pm in the ASB Theatre, Blenheim.

Take your career to the next level Kaikoura resident Ailsa Howard and her husband Ted be have designed cages to be laid over the nests of banded dotterels to save their eggs from damage by beach users and attacks by predators.

Saving banded dotterels from an empty nest Banded dotterels are a small endemic bird that can be found on Marlborough’s East Coast beaches, often seen running quickly and stopping to peck at small invertebrates. These threatened birds breed by laying two to three eggs in a shallow scrape on the foreshore and while being well camouflaged, their location makes them very vulnerable to damage by motor bikes, 4WD and even people stepping on them. The usual introduced predators,

including hedgehogs, also impact egg and chick survival. Kaikoura resident Ailsa Howard, who has been monitoring banded dotterel in Kaikoura’s South Bay, is alarmed by the low numbers of banded dotterel chicks she sees. In some years no chicks appear to have survived. This led Ailsa, and husband Ted Howard, to trial designs of cages that could be laid over a nest to allow bird passage but not predators like dogs, cats and

hedgehogs. The cages also draw attention to the presence of a nest and helped people avoid disturbing the birds. Ailsa Howard will be presenting her banded dotterel work at a Forest & Bird public talk at Blenheim school hall, at 7.30 pm on Thursday, October 18. The public are welcome. Designing a home you will love Creating contemporary, stylish and comfortable homes is what Jason Anderson does best! He’s designed hundreds of beautiful homes throughout Marlborough and New Zealand that not only reflect the wants and needs of his clients, but also compliment the environment in which they are built. business with clients located across the Tasman has now expanded as far as Queenstown and Tauranga. What’s more, their local client base has grown to the point where they relocated to an office within Blenheim’s CBD, and now plans are in motion to move to larger space early next year. “Our growth is a huge reason for celebration,” Jason says. “As it shows the incredible amount of support we’ve received and we thank everyone who has helped us to get where we are today.” As a qualified architectural designer, Jason works on a wide range of designs from high end homes and large scale renovation projects, through to smaller budget builds. “We can be working on builds between $300,000 through to $2.5million. A large portion of our work comes from private clients who come to us with a section they’ve purchased and some ideas of what they want. “Most importantly, I like to get to know the client first and establish a relationship with them so that we both have an understanding of exactly what they are wanting,” he says. Jason sits down with clients and goes through an indepth process where

they work our everything from the budget and timeframes, through to which builder or building company they want to build with. “It’s a very detailed and open process. At the end of the day we want to produce a design that ticks all the boxes. “We also believe in treating our clients how we would want to be treated. Our approach is providing ongoing communication, complete transparency and above all, a home that is 100percent what you wanted,” Jason says. Jason’s experience and ongoing research into the building market means that no matter what the design brief is, or how geographically challenging the location is, he can provide a number of options to the client. “I’ve worked on projects in remote locations throughout Marlborough, including one in the Sounds that we are hoping to feature on the Grand Designs television show,” Jason says. “We’ve also completed a build at the Marlborough Ridge and have several other big projects in the pipeline.” Whatever your next project is, call in and see the team at Anderson Archictectural Design at their Arthur Street office, opposite Westpac Bank.

Testimonial “Jason and the team at Anderson Architectural are a pleasure to work with, very professional yet very comfortable and easy to work with. Understood exactly what we were after from the very first meeting, which gave us great confidence that we were working with the right person. He was able to offer some great suggestions and expand further on our ideas. Concept plans were drawn and received

within a week, and with a few minor twinks final plans soon followed. A very quick, efficient service that I have never experienced before, dealing with architects. If you are looking for a architect with great skills, great communication, easily relate-able and offering an all round excellent service, then I would highly recommend Jason from Anderson architectural. Thanks Jason, looking forward to the build now.”

Free transport for those who need it

Staff at Wairau Pharmacy wearing their Dementia Friendly badges.

Dementia Friends just the ticket for Wairau Pharmacy Wairau Pharmacy has committed to signing all its staff up to Alzheimers NZ’s Dementia Friends programme, which launched nationwide in April. With a number of regular customers presenting with dementia, pharmacist Marion Gray says it seemed an obvious decision to better understand them and their experience with the condition. “We thought about what their experiences would be and how we could help them. Becoming Dementia Friends was something we thought could benefit both them and us.” With a number of new staff members recently joining the Scott St

pharmacy, Marion hopes everyone will soon be a Dementia Friend and committed to an action. She also hopes the Dementia Friend badges and wrist bands will help start a conversation with customers about the condition – one that affects four out of five Kiwis in some way. Alzheimers Marlborough general manager Diane Tolley is extremely proud of not only the local pharmacy’s efforts to join the programme, but also of other pharmacy staff who have joined Dementia Friends. Dementia Friends learn about dementia and the impact it has. They then make a commitment to action to help those living with dementia

to live well, choosing the action or actions they are comfortable with and able to offer. As of last week, more than 1500 people throughout New Zealand have made commitments ranging from something as simple as wearing the Dementia Friends badge or wrist band, to one volunteer enrolling as a registered driver to help their local branch with group outings. “Every action counts, be they big or small,” Diane says. “Every Dementia Friend is helping Marlborough become a little more inclusive, and brings us closer to becoming a dementia friendly community.”

Free public transport is available to Super Gold Card holders on the Blenheim Bus. There is also some assistance available to people who require door-todoor transport. The Total Mobility Scheme provides subsidised taxi transport for people who can’t manage public transport due to permanent disability or impairment. The Scheme is jointly funded by the District Council and the NZ Transport Agency. An eligibility assessment by a participating Agency is required before joining the

Total Mobility Scheme and a $20 assessment fee is payable to the agency. People who qualify for this assistance are issued with a photo ID card and vouchers that entitle the user to halfprice travel up to the value of $15 for a one-way trip within Marlborough. There’s no restriction on the purpose of the trip; it can be to the doctor or the shop or for personal or social reasons. For more information about the Total Mobility Scheme Ph: 03 520 7400.

Saturday spring fair Celebrate the arrival of spring and help Linkwater School to raise money. There are two fantastic events on this weekend. The first is the Spring Fair on Saturday from 10am - 1pm at Linkwater School. A spokesperson says the most exciting part of this fair is the seedling sale. “With Labour Weekend being the traditional time to plant veges and flowers. People come from all over to buy their seedlings... they’re world famous in Marlborough,” Anna Polson says. There will also be loads of fun and entertainment for the kids including pony rides,

games and food. Later that day, starting at 5pm will be the Link-toberfest event, a fundraising dinner being held at Outward Bound, Anakiwa. There are still tickets available, $40 each, and include a drink on arrival, authentic ‘barvarian style’ food and live entertainment. For tickets contact Linkwater School on (03) 574 2200 before noon Monday-Friday or email office@linkwater. school.nz This is Linkwater School’s big fundraising push for the year and money raised from these events will pay for Linkwater to hire a third teacher.

By Celeste Alexander A brand new equine veterinary practice has launched this week in Marlborough thanks to a collaboration between local woman, Dr Charlotte Patterson-Green and Dr Keith Houston, owner of the National Carevets Group. Charlotte has been a veterinarian for 11 years and has always been passionate about horses. During her university holidays she worked as an extern at UC Davis equine hospital in California where she was inspired to become a horse vet. Charlotte started her veterinary career as an ambulatory equine vet with Dr Corin Murfitt in Christchurch and has since worked with all companion animals in both Tasman and Marlborough. She particularly enjoys equine dentistry where she has spent time in Australia learning from the world’s best veterinary equine dentists. So when she was approached by Keith to start the Horsevets Marlborough Ltd practice, she jumped at the opportunity. “The region has been crying out for an ambulatory equine service since the retirement of equine vet, Dr David Simm”. “A mutual friend whose horses I had worked with in the past recommended me to Keith, so after a phone call and later a meeting in person, the business was born,” she says. Keith has been a veterinarian in Hamilton for over 30 years, servicing the needs of rural and pet families. He

started and funded the National CareVets Group 15 years ago which aims at high quality pet care. Keith will continue on as the owner of Horsevets Marlborough while Charlotte will be the operating veterinarian. “I feel incredibly lucky to have met Keith but also that this opportunity was meant to be. I was at a crossroads in my career and ready to leave the region to find a practice that matched my values and along this came out of the blue,” she says. Horsevets Marlborough will initially be ambulatory with the potential for setting up a premises in the future. Charlotte will operate from a truck with mobile stocks where all procedures and diagnostics can be carried out safely and easily at any property.

“The advantage of the mobile stocks is that horses can be treated at their own home, even in their own paddock, where they will be relaxed and comfortable,” she says. Horsevets Marlborough boasts of having state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment including a portable digital x-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy and the very lastest dentistry equipment from the United States. “I will be able to communicate with all the equine vets that work as part of the Carevet team in the North Island as I believe many pairs of eyes are better than one set when it comes to complicated cases. “I look forward to providing a professional equine veterinary service for all horses, from miniatures to warmbloods,” Charlotte says.

Spring is finally here, and that means the holiday season is not far behind. So, it’s time to think about putting your best face forward at parties and celebrations. If you’re looking for advice on skin rejuvenation, then look no further than enhanceskin. Registered Nurse, Lacey Boyd, offers clinics locally at the Churchill Trust Private Hospital. Lacey has been expertly tutored in facial rejuvenation techniques and treatments by Dr David Orsbourn. Her gentle touch and calming manner, combined with enhanceskin’s ethos of helping clients age gracefully, has already proved to be a winning combination for many Marlburians. Lacey is aware that one of the most common concerns people have before undergoing any facial aesthetic treatment is that they don’t want to look ‘done’. To that end, the enhanceskin team have put practices in place that guarantee you’ll get the natural look you want when you invest in any treatment plans with them. Firstly, they offer an initial complimentary cosmedical consultation. While you need to book in advance, this is a no-obligation, totally free of charge appointment, that allows you to discuss your requirements and concerns. Lacey suggests you bring a photograph of your younger self to this initial consultation,

saying, “Our aim is always to enhance your features, so you look like a younger you.” The cosmedical services, enhanceskin offers, are then tailored into a treatment plan for you, this might involve just one treatment, or it might be a combination of treatments. Cosmetic Botulinum, a natural, purified protein, gives such a lovely refreshed look, it’s as if you’ve been on holiday. Lacey says, “Clients have told me that their friends notice the difference, but can’t quite work out why they look so good!”. Lacey also recommends the Liquid Face Lift; this procedure restores the cheeks with youthful volume, lifting the jawline and nasolabial fold. Results can last up to two years, but the treatment can be performed in your lunchtime! enhanceskin also offers lip enhancement to restore your natural lip hydration and border, creating beautifully shaped lips that are elegant, sculpted and well defined, yet subtle and natural looking. Whichever facial rejuvenation treatment, or combination of treatments, a client decides upon, nobody knows what they are visiting enhanceskin for, it could be for a skin or vein assessment... so their secret to ageing gracefully stays a secret. Friends and family will all notice how great an enhanceskin client looks, but nobody will know why!

Boys show skills on football field By Celeste Alexander It was the boys’ turn to show off their football skills in Blenheim last week as part of the Gavin Roberts 12th Grade Boys South Island Rep Tournament, held October 11-13. The week previous was the 12th Grade Girls South Island Rep Tournament. Despite the rain Thursday and Friday, the Marlborough Maroons had an awesome start to the three-day tournament. On Friday they won both games 5-1 against Otago Gold, and 6-0 against Mid Canterbury, and their third game against Waimak Red was 0-0. The Marlborough Whites began

their first day of the tournament with a match against Central Otago where they lost 5-0, but in their second match against the SASFC Panthers they won 5-4. They went on to play against Christchurch United who dominated the match and won 10-0. On Friday The Marlborough Maroons continued their winning streak against Selwyn Blue 9-0 and the Roslyn Rangers 2-0, while the Marlborough Whites won their match against the FC 2011 Green 2-0, then drew against South Canterbury Green 1-1. The teams then headed into the

quarter finals where the Marlborough Whites lost against Mid Canterbury 2-5, then it was another close loss for the Marlborough Maroons to Christchurch United 3-4. The semi-finals proved a little tougher, with the Marlborough Whites losing to Nelson White 0-5, and the Marlborough Maroons to Otago Blue 1-4. Going into the finals, the Marlborough White team faced off against Halswell Force but lost 2-4, and the Marlborough Maroons lost to Nelson Royal 0-2. Overall, of the 23 teams that competed in the tournament, the

Local takes on top rally drivers The New Zealand Rally Championship held the final round, Rally New Zealand, last weekend based in Raglan. Top drivers from New Zealand and some visitors from Australia and Caledonia added to the interest. Rally New Zealand was won by World Rally Car driver Hayden Paddon in a Hyundai AP4 car with Ben Hunt in second place. Marlborough Car Club member David Taylor, along with co-driver Jared Hudson from Christchurch, finished third in their class to round off a strong and successful

They finished the season a creditable 13th overall in the Championship driving their Honda Civic. David says; “Despite being in a small two wheel drive car and competing against many very experienced drivers in their four wheel drive, high powered cars, we showed that in addition to being fairly quick on the
