Charlie’s back

By Megan Connolly With Halloween lurking just around the corner you’d think that Bronwen Widdon should keep her ventriloquist dummy, Charlie McCarthy in the wardrobe. But that’s not the case for the doll that has been passed down through the generations. Charlie dates back all the way to when Bronwen’s grandmother, Bronwen Weir, came to New Zealand around 1913. Continued Page 2. Bronwen Widdon and her ventriloquist dummy, Charlie, who has been passed down through her family and is over 100 years old.

Bronwen Widdon and Charlie McCarthy the ventriloquist dummy, who has been passed down through her family, reading the Sun Newspaper.

Continued from page 1. He got his name, Charlie McCarthy, from American comedian Edgar Bergen’s ventriloquist dummy which had the same name. With Charlie being so old, you’d wonder what spooky things he’s seen. Bronwen is unsure of exactly how and when Charlie McCarthy became part of her family’s history. But she has always had fond memories as a child of Charlie sitting on the piano stool in her grandmother’s house. “It’s the mystery of Charlie. I don’t know whether she bought him here in New Zealand or she came over with him. “He must be 100 years old by now,” Bronwen says. Bronwen’s grandmother was a concert pianist, playing

the piano in the cinemas in Wellington back before there were ‘talkies’. When her grandmother passed away, Charlie went to live with Bronwen’s mother and then to Bronwen herself in the 1980’s. “I probably ended up with Charlie because I was the oldest.” But now Charlie sits in the wardrobe because he’s getting old. It was a trip to the cinema in Christchurch to see the new Goosebumps movie with her grandkids that prompted Bronwen to bring Charlie back out of the closet. “When we saw him in the movie we were quite surprised, my grandkids leant over to me and said ‘Nana that looks just like Charlie!’” But a makeover by her

dental technician brother in the 1970s, and a few wardrobe changes, meant that Bronwen’s Charlie looks a little different from the tuxedo-wearing ventriloquist dummy in the movie. “He used to have a top hat, a tuxedo and a monocle,” Bronwen says. At one stage, Bronwen’s brother took Charlie to do some repairs on his aging face, but he returned with a moustache and sideburns. Bronwen was horrified. “I knitted my husband a mustard turtleneck so I knitted Charlie one too because they looked so alike,” Bronwen says. Like her own childhood, now Bronwen’s grandchildren have come to expect to see Charlie when they open the closet.

Lizard survey to start in Picton By Megan Connolly Did you know there are actually several species of Lizards here in Marlborough? And that one of them is even named the Marlborough Green Lizard? Well, project coordinators Rachel Russell from Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Society and Siobhan Browning from Picton Dawn Chorus have joined forces to survey lizards in the Kaipupu Point and the Victoria Domain. It started at the Kaipupu Sanctuary because Rachel and her colleagues weren’t

sure what they had in their backyard. “Mainly because it hasn’t been done before and we want to know what is around,” Rachel says. The survey will help the groups to compare the locations and the different types of native control. “It helps us to understand the change in land use. If we clear vegetation gecko’s and skinks have nowhere to live,” Siobhan says. “They have the potential to disappear if they get isolated because they end up splitting

into different species. That’s why some species have gone away. The survey so far has had Rachel and Siobhan, and Trent Bell director of Eco Gecko, laying out surveying equipment with volunteers over the past couple of weeks. Traps which are foam sheets nailed to trees, which provide cover and pitfall traps, are put in place but will be opened in January. It gives the skinks and geckos time to familiarise themselves with them before they are opened in January.

The Lizard Survey run by Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Society and Picton Dawn Chorus are looking for geckos just like this Raukawa gecko, which is widespread in the Marlborough Sounds. Photo provided.

“It’s very useful because it gives us a baseline to tell whether it is us or other environmental factors,” Siobhan says. The long-term goal of the

project will be to lead a longterm monitoring system that helps to understand the lizard population in those areas. “It will be fascinating to see what happens,” Siobhan says.

Marlborough Chamber of Commerce new general manager Hans Neilson with Chamber administration and communications coordinator, Alice Parkinson, outside the Chamber’s Seymour Street office.

Chamber has new manager By Bill McElhinney A year after joining the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce, Hans Neilson has been appointed general manager. Hans takes over from Grant Kerr, the CEO of the Nelson-Tasman and Marlborough chambers, who has accepted a role at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology as the executive of director of strategy, enterprise and sustainability. For the past year Hans has been the partnership, development and events manager with the Chamber, building membership and networks across the region. “I’m excited for the opportunity to give back to the community that I love and to lead staff who are

committed to one of the most valuable assets in Marlborough, our region’s businesses,” Hans says. “We have a great team and a roadmap that aligns with the Chamber’s strategy, and a vision to see the Chamber continue to grow.” The Marlborough Chamber of Commerce currently has 354 members. When he’s not busy with the Chamber, Hans enjoys playing guitar with the Havelock-based group, Band of Locals. “We’ve got some performances coming up, so we’re busy rehearsing at the moment,” Hans says. He and partner Bridget Mulligan also take the opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the many

attractions Marlborough has to offer. “Hans has been with us for a year and has shown a passion for the Chamber, its members and the economic development for the region,” Chamber president Nita Van Grinsven says. “The board recognises and appreciates his efforts and his interest to grow further with the Chamber. “Hans has strong support from the Board for him to build on being the local face representing the Chamber in the region at a management level,” Nita says. Hans has a wealth of experience working with businesses and communities across Marlborough and is keen to build on a successful career in economic development,

marketing, promotions, event-planning and communications and IT consulting. Nita says the Nelson resource sharing agreement has been a great experience and both sides have learned from the experience. “Grant Kerr’s influence and expertise as joint chief executive has helped to align and strengthen the strategies for both Chambers and ensure that we can now deliver quality services consistently to our members on both sides of the hill,” Nita says. “Both Chambers will continue to collaborate and share resources in a Top of the South approach to ensure that we can deliver the best services consistently to our members.”

Getting State Highway One to Christchurch open again has boosted visitor spending in Marlborough. Destination Marlborough says the opening of SH1 in December 2017 has resulted in a total of $387 million of new money into the local economy to year ending March 2018, up eight per cent on the previous year and up seven per cent on 2016 pre-quake spend.

Reservoir almost ready Work to seismically strengthen and upgrade the Wither Hills reservoir is almost complete. Work on the 1970s structure began in March this year and included remediation of the external walls, internal concrete surfaces, floor slab and roof. Pipework has also been replaced as part of the work. Council projects engineer Mark Power says the next step involves filling the 5600 cubic metre reservoir to disinfect it, and to test for water tightness. “This process will take approximately three weeks,” Mark says.

Vintage Farm machinery open day

By Megan Connolly Marlborough Vintage Farm Machinery is holding their bi-annual open day on Sunday, October 28, at Brayshaw Park. All their buildings at the park will be open, along with working farm machinery displays and the popular Thomas the Tractor. It’s perfect for something to do at the long weekend, and only a gold coin donation on entry. “The day has entertainment for the whole family,” an organiser, Bernie Mason says. There will also be a pen of baby animals, professional wood cutters in action plus a yummy sausage sizzle. The event will run from 9.30am to around 3.30pm, so there will be plenty of time to explore and look around the machinery. Vintage Farm Machinery from the settlers who took up the land in Marlborough in 1848 will feature at the open day. “We’re trying to preserve history so the public can appreciate what Marlborough was like before horticulture,” Bernie says. This year marks the anniversary of 50 years since Norm Brayshaw founded Brayshaw Park.

New bus service trials get green light A new Renwick to Blenheim return bus service is to be given a trial. The Marlborough District Council’s assets and services committee has agreed to trial several new bus service trials over 18 months and to expanded Blenheim commuter bus routes and a Blenheim to Picton return service. Deputy Mayor Terry Sloan says the council will now enter into a formal negotiation process with bus service providers to confirm pricing and the final routes. “I’m confident we’ve found a work-

able solution to providing more bus services for our growing population,” Terry says. “But we won’t be able to please everyone. Unfortunately an airport bus service is cost-prohibitive - we can’t afford to service every arrival and departure from the airport.” The services to be trialled include a Renwick service (peak and off peak) – four weekday return trips, plus a Saturday service. New Blenheim commuter services (peak) - half-hourly between 7.30am and 8.30am, and 5.15pm to 6.15pm.

A Picton service, two days per week, off peak. “All the proposed routes and timetables are yet to be finalised. The Renwick service is proposed to be a mix of peak commuter and off-peak services, requiring four return trips on weekdays and two on Saturdays,” Terry says. “There is an approval process required through NZTA to add new services under the Super Gold Card travel scheme. Super Gold card users are entitled to travel for free on offpeak services only.”

Probably around three days but it just really depends on wifi.

I could probably go without the internet for a week and have a break.

Depends on what it is... I use Instagram mainly in the morning but if there’s nothing on there I’ll not check it again. I could easily go a whole day.

Like a week. I’ve done it before so I could probably go quite a while.

If there was no wifi I could easily go for ages without out it. But if there was wifi I would check it all the time.

I’ve been without wifi for a month before so it wouldn’t be that hard.

Drivers, take care!

Not on the footpath

Dear Ed, Another crash at the Scott Street – Muller Road intersection and another fence flattened. What is it with Blenheim drivers? The streets aren’t narrow, the give-ways are clearly marked. But this particular spot seems to attract more than its fair share of bad drivers. I’ve lost count of the number of crashes there in the last couple of years. You certainly need to be a defensive driver in Blenheim, given that a fair percentage of our motorists are obviously human hazards on four wheels. Wonder how they got a licence in the first place! Nervous driver Blenheim

Dear Ed, Driving down High Street to turn left into Seymour Street on Sunday just before 4.00 pm I noted what I presume to be a father and his young daughter on their bicycles travelling in the same direction. So lovely to see them enjoying time out together, but sadly they were riding on the footpath and then rode over the pedestrian crossing.

‘Footpath’ means a safe path for those on foot, ‘pedestrian crossing’ means those crossing on foot. Those on bicycles, scooters, etc. must dismount and walk across the crossing. Traffic does not have to give way to those not on foot! Please Dad, keep safe, demonstrate and teach your daughter the correct road rules. Judi Woolley Blenheim

Dear Ed, We decided to replace our two old loos, complete with cisterns. The plumber subsequently arrived, dismantled the old ones and installed the new loos, and did a great job. The proof of the pudding was yet to come. But when we flushed, the pudding was still there! The plumber returned and made a few adjustments, but to no avail. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, the vendor of said loos arrived and apologetically informed us that most modern loos were designed to use less water, for conservation purposes, and were made more narrow, so it seems we are stuck with the problem. So loo buyers, please be aware! M. Candy Blenheim

It’s time to change Dear Ed, Talk about rubbing salt in the wound! An event in Turkey points out that every time petrol goes up, we donate to the kind of people who, logic tells us, we should never have made rich, including a medieval tyrant who buys the West’s prime real estate and state-of-the-art weaponry. The oligarchs and tin pot dictators for whom we discovered and developed oilfields now wield power beyond all reason and enjoy the lifestyles of the rich and famous. In my opinion it is crucial that we install tidal current generators in the appropriate zones of Cook Strait, with the assistance of Norway. And we should push ahead with electric propulsion for every form of transport so as to get out of being subservient to the oil moguls. We have to grasp the fact that this is the Electric Century. Oil was for the 20th Century, as coal was for the 19th Century. It is betraying our descendants if we do not adapt, and fast. Bill Holvey Blenheim

Revitalising our CBD is shared by many By Stuart Smith MP. Blenheim’s ongoing struggle to fill and revitalise its CBD is shared by many other centres around New Zealand. I have previously likened Blenheim to a “hollow egg” which, at the end of every working day, empties out as residents head home to the suburbs, leaving nothing at its centre. Nelson, Rotorua, Tauranga, Porirua and Hamilton, to name just a few, have been grappling with the same issue for many years, but there seems to be a gradual move towards answering

the problem with inner city living developments. Tauranga has for some time been in the process of developing a series of high-end apartment developments in its CBD, and is also looking to attract more student accommodation and retirement accommodation. This drive for more inner-city living is backed by the city’s chamber of commerce and its mayor, who can see the many benefits of drawing people into the area and offering a choice of lifestyle. Hamilton has been developing

apartment blocks within an area identified by the city council’s Hamilton’s Central City Transformation Plan, which have reportedly been attracting young professional couples and empty nesters. This push to revive the CBD was backed by a council remission scheme, introduced in 2013/2014, where CBD projects didn’t have to pay development contributions, provided the project fitted with council’s goals. Porirua, too, is undergoing a similar push for inner city develop-

ment, starting with 36 mixed-use apartments – hotel-type units for travellers, and others for long-term owners and students - which its mayor has said supports its vision for having a 24/7 centre, and will bring confidence for businesses to invest. Blenheim would do well to look at the success that inner city living options bring to these centres and follow suit by filling the largely empty first-storey level of our CBD. The space is already there, we just need to fill it.

Parents setting driving boundaries Become a great kiwi driver! With six out of seven New Zealanders aged 16 to 24 driving in breach of their licence conditions, research suggests parents and caregivers, not licensing laws, are setting the boundaries. A 2016 study by the Auckland Co-Design Lab, showed 85 percent of drivers aged 16 to 24 breached their learner or restricted licence conditions, and 40,000 young people were ticketed for licence breaches each year. Another study done in 2013 for ACC and Auckland Transport showed the influence of parents and caregivers on young drivers had a powerful effect

in reinforcing the social acceptability of ‘breach’ driving. The AA recommends parents and caregivers provide support and set clear boundaries for the young drivers in their care. Discussing the laws and dangers of driving are important, as well as working out strategies of how to avoid potentially dangerous and unlawful situations. Strategies include establishing a Driving Agreement which sets out the roles of parents and restricted licence holders borrowing the family car, or driving their own car.

Responsibilities of the parent could include making an effort to be available as a supervisor at night and contributing to third party insurance. Responsibilities of the young driver could include advising parents where and when they are driving and asking for supervision for new or risky driving situations, such as bad weather or unsealed roads. Young drivers and their parents and caregivers may find it useful to check out the AA Going Solo brochure, or www.drive.govt.nz for more tips and information. PBA.

Third generation to race Leighton Stanton is following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather as he takes on his first speedway season driving a stockcar. He talks to Celeste Alexander about his family’s involvement in the motorsport and why he also chose to get involved.

Leighton Stanton is a newcomer to the stockcar class at Eastern States Speedway.

At the age of 18, Leighton is enjoying his first taste of being behind the wheel of a stockcar. When he was young he often sat on his father’s lap during grand parade laps and watched from the crowd, but there’s nothing like feeling the power and speed out on the track, he says. “I grew up around speedway as my grandfather Reg and father Brian raced, so I knew it was always going to happen for me eventually,” he laughs. Leighton actually started out in kart racing in 2012 in the Rotax Senior class. He enjoyed this and travelled away the odd times to compete, but when he found out the stockcar class was “picking up” he decided to do the swap. “I had actually been looking at stockcars for a couple of years now, just seeing what’s around. Now that

I’m working fulltime I decided to get one,” he says. “There’s a big difference between racing on asphalt and a speedway track... I had to get used to that change but it was good and I think I’m doing alright.” Leighton works as a cellar hand at Wine Works, doing the night shift. So when he gets home from work in the morning, he’ll sleep first then spends a few hours in the shed working on the stockcar. The stockcar Leighton has purchased for his first speedway season is out of Christchurch and he says was “one of the fastest” in that area. “It was all set and ready to go when I got it. It’s got a Rees chassis, an AU motor in it and a ZF gearbox. I’ve had a couple of races in it already and went over to Nelson for their opening night last Saturday and I’m

pretty happy with it,” he says. The most important feature of the car though, is the race number - 57e. “One of the first things I did was change the racing number on it... I’m racing the same number that dad and my grandfather did,” he says.

biggest supporter... always has been with all of my racing.” Asked who he looks up to in motorsport the most, Leighton says his father Brian, hands down. “I have always looked up to my old man. He’s been the one to push me through motorsport and supports me in everything I do!” Brian was a stockcar driver for many years with Eastern States Speedway and was involved with the first Vikings team, then went on to be part of the Titans. He sold his stockcar three years ago, but will still be present throughout the season helping Leighton. “Dad’s been a huge help learning about the stockcar. Between him and family friend Scott Duncan, I’ve got good help. Scott has helped us heaps with the stockcar with all the engineering work and re-

Leighton will be the third generation to race under 57e, and he’s keeping the same family colours of orange and black too. “It’s a shame that my grandfather isn’t with us anymore to come out to the track and watch, but dad is my

building of the trailer, we’d be lost without him,” he says. Looking at the 2018/2019 season ahead, Leighton says he’s looking forward to a South Island Championship event in January and racing in Palmerston North. “To qualify at the South Islands would be pretty cool,” he says. Helping Leighton with sponsorship for his racing is his uncle, Jeff Stanton of Precision Auto. Jeff provides a space in his workshop for the stockcar and does “bits that need done during the week”, Leighton says. “Uncle Jeff is a big help, as well as Brent Goulding of Marlborough Vehicle Recovery who drops off spare parts when needed. “A massive thanks to everyone who helps me, it’s appreciated,” he says.

Establishing grass growth has never been easier thanks to hydroseeding, a planting process that can be used anywhere, whether it be at home in the backyard or on construction sites for erosion control. One local company that specialises in hydroseeding is Landspec, a new business established this year by Andrew and Leanne Goodsir. Landspec not only specialises in hydroseeding, but also irrigation, general landscaping and outdoor construction. It’s been a busy time for the couple who launched their business earlier in the year, and already their services are in high demand throughout the top-of-the-south. Andrew, who has a background in ea r thworks, forestry engineering and project management, says he’s effectively turned his ‘hobby’ into a career. “It’s something I’ve always

done in my spare time.... landscaping, building decks and fences, whether at home or friend’s properties. It’s also something Leanne and I like doing together, so to be able to make a career from something we enjoy has been a real bonus,” he says. With all the housing and earthworks developments taking place in Marlborough, Andrew and Leanne identified a demand for hydroseeding and have aligned themselves with PGG Wrightson who they source quality seed, fertiliser and hydroseeding materials from. “We chose to go with this company because of the support and training that’s provided, as well as being able to source quality product from,” Andrew says. Hydroseeding, or as many would know as “Spray on Grass”, is a cost and time effective solution for grass establishment and can be

tailored to all types of soil. “The key to quality hydroseeding is using the right products for the right situation for any terrain. We spray it on the area and then provide the client with all the information required for aftercare. “But it’s not just the hydroseeding that we provide. If the client wants us to prep the lawn and, install an irrigation system, we have qualified and experienced staff who can take care of it,” Andrew says. For larger landscaping projects, Andrew can also project manage the whole process. “Andrew has had nearly a decade of managing projects, co-ordinating with businesses, clients and staff, so he can make it easy on the client by taking care of all the details,” Leanne adds. “That’s the benefit of working with Landspec, we can do the whole job, the land-

Decked out in time for summer The warmer weather is here and people are If it’s a deck you are considering, there pulling out their BBQ’s, outdoor furniture and are endless possibilities when it comes to are looking to create an entertaining space. the style and placement. A recent trend is the multiple levelled deck. With this design the main level that sits closest to the house can serve as a large open-air grilling and dining area. The next level down can be designed for intimate lounging and a quiet room setting, and if you wanted to take the deck a further level down, a hot tub or pizza oven can be included there. A raised deck attached to the second floor of a home can be an ideal option to screen a porch or open patio, effectively acting as a ceiling to provide a sheltered area. When searching for ideas for your new deck, look at ways to match the architectural style of your house to the deck. One idea could be a deck stained in all one • Installed to fit your requirements colour with clean lines and sharp angles, • Aluminium mobile scaffolding available which might suit a contemporary home. • Trade qualified If you want to personalise your deck, • Member of Scaffold and rigging NZ you could do this with the railing details. Making the most of laundry space Every home has some form of space for a laundry area. Some are larger than others, but even with the smallest amount of space, a lot can be done with it. Some clever planning and storage ideas can transform your laundry into a functional and well organised space. Here are some ideas for laundry rooms that may help to inspire your next home project. - Take advantage of the warmth of wood by placing shelves that stretch over the washer and dryer. Add some more shelves stacking up the wall. - In some homes, the laundry is actually

found in a small niche along a hallway. If you don’t want your little laundry area exposed, consider sliding doors painted in a feature colour. - Nowadays a homeowner can buy laundry appliances in a variety of colours. So keep the decor simple with neutral colours and make the appliances the feature of the laundry. - One solution for a small laundry space, is to stack one machine on top of the other and add simple shelves in the gap between the appliances and the wall, for the necessary items to make laundry day easier.

Using colour to enlarge rooms Do you have small rooms that you wish to make look bigger? There are a number of paint colours and techniques that can be used to achieve this. Carefully chosen colours can easily transform a small room into an intimate, cosy and stylish space, all the while making the room appear larger than it actually is. Here are some tips. Light and white: Light colours on the walls reflect natural light and bounce it around, this creates an open and airy space. Ideally a soft white is preferable for walls, as brilliant white can look clinical. Bright white however, can be used as an accent colour for accessories and trim. Create interest by adding bolder accent furniture and accessories or paint a feature wall in a cool light shade, like blue, green or grey. Warm versus cool colours: Cool pastel shades recede, making walls look as though they are further away than they actually are. If you have a space that is long and narrow, do the opposite

Painting horizontal stripes on a wall can help make a space appear wider.

and paint the end wall a warm colour (red for example) which will make the wall at the end appear closer and the space less narrow. Painting the trim: Painting skirting boards and cornices the same colour as the wall will make a wall appear taller than it is, making a room appear larger. Painting the ceiling: Ceilings

painted in light colours will make the ceiling recede and appear higher creating a feeling of more space. Another trick is to paint the ceiling and the walls the same light colour, this allows the eye to move continuously around the room without stopping at the boundary of the wall and the ceiling, this makes the room appear more spacious.

Window design ideas Windows are one of the most important parts of a home. They let in the light, warmth of the sunshine and connect your home with the outside world. So when designing your home, give careful consideration to how your windows will look. Will you go with a wood or metal framing? Will your windows have a more modern and contemporary design, will they be large or small, and how many will you have in each room? These are all questions your architectural designer will ask. So put together a list of ideas that you feel will complement your home. Here are some design ideas to help. Entry door windows: A well-designed entryway makes a positive first impression and reveals the tone of the rest of the house. From sidelights

to transoms, windows serve an important role in entryways, providing views, light, and architectural character. Bay windows: Bay windows offer many advantages, such as stunning views, natural light, window seats in cozy alcoves, connections between indoors and out, and extra storage and floor space. Skylights and high windows: Skylights, transoms, and other high windows are great ways to add natural light to a room without sacrificing privacy and wall or storage space. Skylights can be used to show off a ceiling’s striking pitch, bring the outdoors in, and offer sky and treetop views. Additionally, if operable, high windows can provide a valuable source of ventilation.

Painting stripes: Stripes are a great way to create an illusion of space. Horizontal stripes will make a wall appear longer than it actually is. Vertical stripes will make a room appear taller than it actually is. Stripes can be done in beautiful bright colours in various widths or keep it simple and stylish with stripes of the same size in neutral colours.

Order elects new chaplain By Bill McElhinney History was made at the national conference of the Order of St Luke, held in Blenheim recently. The Reverend Jenny Quince was installed as the new chaplain for the national order, the first time a woman, and a Maori, has been elected to the position. Jenny, who is based in Auck-

land, works in the Auckland Anglican Maori Mission and is involved in the leadership of the Maori Pastorate. Blenheim kaumatua Canon Kevin Thompson led a special welcome for Jenny’s installation as the conference delegates gathered in the Blenheim Wesley Centre. “We elect a new chaplain

every three years,” Blenheim Order of St Luke member and former national chaplain, Kevin Gwynne, says. “It is wonderful to have Jenny take up this position.” The Order of St. Luke the Physician is an interdenominational movement founded in America in the 1940’s with the object of restoring the place of healing in

the life of the church. The Order was established in New Zealand in the 1960’s and there are about 400 members in chapters and healing groups throughout the country, Kevin says. The Blenheim chapter meets every third Wednesday in the chapel at 1.15pm in the chapel at Wairau Hospital.

Don’t skip lunch breaks Are you feeling tired and fatigued at work? If so, it could be because only 28 per cent of Kiwi workers take their full designated lunch break. That’s according to a survey by recruiting firm Hays, who surveyed 1253 professionals, who were asked how much of their designated lunch break they take on average. Just 28 per cent take their full lunch break most days, 25 per cent take around three-quarters and 22 per cent take half. A further 18 per cent take just one quarter of their break. The final 7 per cent never take a break! And when asked what helps keep them fresh and alert at work, 65 per cent said getting away from their desk to eat lunch. “People often believe they’re too busy or their to-do list is too long to be able to step out,” Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia and New Zealand says. “But we don’t always need to be available at our desk. We can step away to eat and take a break. Leaving devices at your desk can keep you fresh and alert too. “It’s important to down tools and step away from our devices during break times. Go for a walk to stretch your legs or sit in a nearby park. You’ll notice the difference in your improved level of productivity.”

Sun shines on memorial tournament

Last Saturday was a day for friendly rivalry between social football teams that gathered at the A&P Showgrounds in Blenheim in honour of Matt Neal, who tragically passed away two years ago. The annual Matt Neal Memorial tournament was a big success which was played in good spirits by all, made even better by the fantastic weather. Proceeds from the team entry fees

went to a good cause, with $600 donated to the Neal family’s choice of charity. They chose the Marlborough Youth Trust this year. Results: 1st – Internationale; 2nd – Cobras, 3rd – VB Longnecks, 4th – Picton Wildcats, 5th – Slightly Buttered Mushrooms, 6th – Lads on Toure, 7th – Yeah the Boys, 8th – Red Rabbles.

Table tennis players perform well at national champs Four Marlborough-based players competed at the national table tennis championships in Tauranga last week. Kylie Hurren, playing in the Nelson women’s team with the mother/daughter combination of Glenda Ferguson and Kylie Collett, came away with a silver medal in the women’s B grade. Kylie won four singles from eight matches. Waikato won the grade with Nelson claiming second place on a count back from Bay of Plenty and Manawatu. Vanessa Wood-Lin won a silver medal playing for the Canterbury under-15 team in the A grade, with Wellington coming first. Vanessa won five out of eight singles. In the individual events, this under-15

player reached the last 16 of the under-18 girls’ singles. Alex Kennedy had a brilliant run playing for Manawatu B in the under-18 boys’ B grade. After losing his first match, he won nine matches in a row to finish the competition with only one loss. Seeded 28, he qualified for post-section play in the boys’ under-18 singles. He reached the quarter-finals of the boys’ under-18 doubles with Southland’s Andrew Fleming, after they had beaten the seventh seeds in the previous round. Nathan Watson was unable to play in the individual events due to injury, but earlier had won five out of eight singles for Manawatu B in the men’s B grade.
