By Bill McElhinney When the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, a celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury opens in Blenheim this week, Blenheim man John Nelson will be very excited. Because John is in the movie. Or at least his voice is. Back in May, John sang a version of Bohemian Rhapsody in a competition for singers to be included in the movie. Continued on Page 2. John Nelson will be singing along with Freddy Mercury in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, which is currently being screened in Blenheim.

Blenheim man sings with Freddy in Queen movie Continued from page 1. “I’ve always been a big fan of Queen, and I follow them on social media,” John says. “I got an alert on my phone about the competition. They were looking for voices to include in a scene where the crowd sing along with Freddy at a live aid concert. “So I grabbed my phone and sang, and sent it away. I didn’t think anything would happen.” Then last week John was very surprised to get an email confirming that his voice had been added to the choral crowd scene of Bohemian Rhapsody in the Live Aid part of the movie. “I seriously did not think I would get picked,” John says. “There are many voices in the mix. To get this email blew me away. “Queen are part of our culture and everyone remembers their set at Live Aid back in 85. “I can’t wait to see the movie now!” A video clip shows how the production team at Abbey

Road Studios mixed all the voices cleverly into the movie, which opens in Blenheim with a special screening tonight. John and his wife Patsy moved to Marlborough from Dumfries, Scotland, seven years ago and last year became New Zealand citizens. “We lived in Auckland for a year in 2003 and made a lot of friends, and we always wanted to come back to New Zealand,” John says. So they took the plunge and made the move, and have never regretted it. John, who is an IT specialist, landed a job with pcMedia in Blenheim. “We love it in Marlborough,” says John, “and it’s a lot warmer here!” John has a lifetime love of music and back in the 1970s formed a high school band with friend Tony Thorburn. Tony also immigrated to New Zealand and lives in Auckland, and he and John have reunited to record a debut album of

“late models and we’re from Europe!” “The album is being recorded on vinyl and will come out next year.”

In the meantime, John is looking forward to the movie. “I’ll be listening hard to see if I can hear me!”

By Megan Connolly The Rotary Club of Blenheim South is running a film premiere fundraiser at the showing of Bohemian Rhapsody tomorrow, Thursday, 1 to raise money for Creative Kids Trust Music Therapy and PolioPlus. The event will take place at Event Cinemas with drinks and nibbles at 5.30pm and the film starting at 6.15pm. Tickets

are $35. Rotary Club of Blenheim South, who will be celebrating their 50 years anniversary later in November, are using the opportunity to support the local Creative Kids Trust Music Therapy at Seddon and Ward schools. Creative Kids Trust uses music therapy to help children who are affected by the

post-Kaikoura earthquakes and has been running for seven terms in schools. In January of 2017 the Rotary club of Blenheim South approached Creative Kids Trust to investigate if there was a need for assistance in possibly introducing musical therapy in Seddon and Ward schools post the 2016 earthquake. It didn’t take long for the

Creative Kids Trust, headed by Liz McKay, to see the positive effects the musical therapy sessions were having on the children. While Rotary Club of Blenheim South provides aid to local communities, they also are all working together globally to help immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries.

Since their first project in the Philippines in 1979, Rotarians have helped reduce Polio cases by 99.9 per cent worldwide. PolioPlus and Rotary are close to eradicating polio worldwide, organiser Mike Parkinson says. To find out more or purchase a ticket, contact Mike on 021765407 or parkinsonmb74@gmail.com.

Earthquake, 6.2 felt in region Geonet reported a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that hit 25 km south-west of Taumarunui, at a depth of 207 km yesterday at 3.13pm, which was felt across Marlborough. It was orginally reported as being 6.7 magnitude.

House bus crashes

The road between Picton and Blenheim was down to one lane on Sunday afternoon after a house bus rolled at Koromiko, briefly trapping the male driver. The driver was taken to Wairau Hospital with moderate injuries. Traffic was reduced to one lane while emergency services worked to clear the road of debris. MP Stuart Smith and U.S. Ambassador Scott Brown prepare to climb aboard the World War II Avro Anson bomber at Omaka.

U.S. Ambassador’s bomber ride By Bill McElhinney The U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand, Scott Brown, breezed through Blenheim last Thursday as a guest of Kaikoura electorate MP Stuart Smith. But the ambassador wasn’t on the hunt for Marlborough wine – he was looking for vinyl records, old ones. Scott is a keen guitar player and record collector, and is always on the prowl for vintage vinyl records to add to his already extensive collection. He didn’t manage to unearth any hidden treasures here, but did get a ride an Avro Anson bomber based at Omaka airfield.

Built in 1943, the Avro is the last World War II bomber of its kind still flying, and Scott and Stuart got a flight with pilot and owner Bill Reid, who says the plane was used in the Royal Air Force and then the Royal Australian Air Force. Scott loves flying – he’s done 180 hours in a Cessna, and he loves sport. He swims, he runs, he mountain bikes and he is really enjoying his time in New Zealand and the outdoors opportunities it provides. As the U.S. Ambassador and a diplomat, he doesn’t get involved in politics. But he says New Zealanders

need to look at U.S. President Donald Trump’s achievements, and “give him a chance.” Yes, he loves New Zealand wines, which he says sell for a premium in the U.S. “They’re on the shelves for at least 15 per cent more than other brands, and they’re very popular,” he says. But because I’m interested in music as well, he’s keen to show me what could be mistaken for an exhibition at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, set up at his ambassador’s residence in Wellington. Signed guitars, vinyl records and photos of Scott with musicians line the walls. He even has a music

studio. And he never misses a chance to tell people about how he’s played guitar with good friend Rick Nielson of U.S. rock band Cheap Trick. Scott, who spent 35 years in the Army National Guard, is a former U.S. senator from Massachusetts. His wife of more than 30 years is journalist Gail Huff and they have two daughters, Ayla, a singer who has appeared in American Idol, and Arianna, a vet school student. It was his first visit to Blenheim and he’s hoping to come back with his family for the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival in February.

Allow extra time

The NZ Transport Agency says drivers should allow extra time for their journeys along the Wairau Valley Highway, SH63, from next week into early December. Road repairs will be underway from the Korere/Tophouse Rd intersection to St Arnaud village from Monday to the first week in December. There will be minor delays with speed restrictions and Stop/Go traffic management in place. With the start of the summer road construction season, upgrading and strengthening works are being undertaken on three sections of the highway.

Scheme under review

Public consultation opened yesterday for people to give feedback on proposed changes to the NAIT Act and regulations. Christmas Parade countdown

The Subway team at the Stadium are gearing up for a busy day tomorrow. From left: Monique Burger, Jeanette Anderson, Georgia Catterick and Nina Oehlrich.

Big day ahead for Subway teams By Bill McElhinney Blenheim Subway staff are gearing up for the biggest day of the year on Friday. “Last year we had queues going right out the door of the Stadium,” Stadium 2000 Subway manager Jeanette Anderson says. The attraction is Subway’s largest fundraising event of the year, the Subway Live Feed. Every Subway visitor who buys a sub, salad or wrap on Friday will get one free, and Subway will donate the cost of a meal to food rescue organisation KiwiHarvest. This is the second-year Subway New Zealand has partnered with KiwiHarvest.

Each month, KiwiHarvest collects more than 65,000 kilos of surplus food from supermarkets, wholesalers, growers, manufacturers, producers, markets, cafes, restaurants and hotels and distributes it to over 220 New Zealand charities including Women’s Refuge and local community food banks. “People were lining up last year, and they didn’t mind the wait,” Jeanette says. “We were rushed off our feet, but it was great. And this year we have special spot prizes to give out as well, so every 100th customer will get a bonus prize! “Last year Subway NZ raised the equivalent of 90,000 meals for those in need. “This year we’re aiming for 100,000.

Imagine how that will help the most vulnerable members of our community ahead of Christmas.” “We are powered by the positivity of people who want to make a difference, which is why we are delighted to be partnering with Subway once again to help vulnerable New Zealanders,” KiwiHarvest CEO, Deborah Manning, says. Every month KiwiHarvest delivers more than 60,000kg of food to 220 charities nationally. Each donation on Friday will be captured on the Subway Live Feed digital tracker, and people can follow the progress via www.SubwayLiveFeed. co.nz

By Megan Connolly We don’t want to scare you, but Christmas isn’t far away. And that means so is the annual Christmas parade! Organiser Rachael Armstrong is looking for fun, funky new floats to be in this year’s parade on December 1. “It’s great for anyone who likes to have fun, highlight your brand and get into the community Christmas spirit,” Rachael says. The parade float can be anything, so you can definitely get creative and think outside the box. “You can enter your walking club, you can cycle, skip, dance, sing or drive. “You can even have ponies, puppies or rabbits. You can go as big as you want!” There will be a wide range of awesome prizes up for grabs for the best floats too, Rachael adds. The Vintage Car Club will be rolling out some of

their cars while Marlborough Vintage Farm Machinery will be displaying an old steamroller. The parade starts at 3.30pm and will do a loop of the main streets of the town. Of course, Santa will make an appearance. There will also be entertainment from Chloe Vitale and MC Glen Kirby. Community groups will only be a $5 entry fee and commercial floats are $35. The number of entries are limited so email Rachael at events@marlborough4fun.co.nz or call her on 03 5778946 to get your application form.

Organiser for the upcoming Christmas Parade on December 1, Rachael Armstrong, is already getting in the holiday spirit. But don't worry, there's still time to enter your group's float before the entries close.

The Sun's annual Christmas Appeal is back and welcoming donations of gifts, clothing and toys for local families.

Donate to the Sun’s Christmas Appeal By Celeste Alexander Every year the Sun holds a Christmas Appeal, asking the community for donations of gifts, clothing and non-perishable food items, which are then donated to local families in need. It’s been a hugely supported project which has helped a number of charitable organisations over the past years, and the Sun staff are pleased to announce it will be taking place again this year. The organisations benefiting from this year will be Strengthening Families (SF) Marlborough as well as Foundations, run by Noralyn Berwick. SF Marlborough manager Lyn Caughey told the Sun the organisation works with more than 600 local families, providing mental health and addiction support. It’s a number that is climbing and many of these families find Christmas a struggle, Lyn says. Noralyn’s Foundations provides empowerment courses for all ages, focusing on self esteem and personal development. It’s also known as ‘Keystones for Change’. Between these two organisations, there

are many families that would appreciate Christmas donations, Lyn says. “We work with families with children of all ages, particularly teenagers. It would mean a great deal to them if they received some lovely donations of gifts and non-perishable food items. “We like to put something together for the families, as well as something in there for the parents. Family games are also great for bringing the family together,” she says. Some items that would be most useful include: Young children - Colouring books, reading books, craft kits, pyjamas, general clothing, stationary. Teenagers - Toiletry packs (deodorants/ perfumes/shower gel), general gift sets, pyjamas, general clothing. Families - Cosmetic products, shampoo and conditioners, toothpaste, family games. Non-perishable food items - Tinned fruit, Christmas treats, biscuits, crackers etc. All donations can be brought into the Sun office at 72 High Street, Blenheim. The cut-off for donations will be Friday, December 8.

Letters to the editor

Dear Ed Your article last Friday re sunshine stakes epitomizes how so many locals are obsessed with the weather and will resort to any measure to try to prove that other towns are somehow cheating with their recordings. The facts show a different story. To date, Blenheim this year has had 50 per cent more rain than average, February was the wettest since way back in 1928. It’s raining as I write this, and the forecast indicates rain for eight out of the next 10 days! Clearly, Blenheim is certainly not a sunny town, and the sign on SH1 welcoming people to “NZ’s sunniest place” is a blatant lie. This would have travellers believe that we are the current holders of the sunshine record which is simply not true. There may be some advantages to living here, but let’s be honest, good weather is not one of them! Waterlogged Blenheim

Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even when a nom de plume is provided for publication.

The editor reserves the right to abridge letters or withhold letters from publication. Email them to news@blenheimsun. co.nz or send a fax to phone 577 -7863. Please note that your name and street address MUST be provided with emails.

Fish cruelty

Well done Council Dear Ed, Kudos to the Marlborough District Council for front-footing the issue of climate change. This is a real threat to our children and grandchildren, yet the majority of Kiwis seem to want to pretend otherwise. We need more initiatives from central and local government to jolt us out of our apathy. What about bringing back carless days? Now that would get our attention! Granddad Blenheim

Dear Ed, When kahawai fishing at the Wairau Bar, could as many people as possible politely tell vineyard worker islanders to kill their fish immediately on catching and not leave them to die a slow death on the shingle? Also, they should realise that plundering big numbers of fish is not ethical. Catch enough for your immediate needs and then go home. Besides it’s an excuse to go fishing again soon. Mind you, it’s not only Islanders guilty of over-catching and cruelty to fish. Don Coyote Blenheim

While visiting Nelson at the weekend, I stumbled upon a classic car display just off Trafalgar Street - right in the heart of the shopping area. A small section of the road was closed off so that people could walk around the cars, all the while being entertained by two live bands playing. Now, how simple is an event like that! It’s the perfect thing for Blenheim’s CBD to host every few months. It brought all ages to the CBD, the cafe’s and bars were filled to the brim, and the energy was really uplifting and positive. Let’s see more of these pop-up events coming to the CBD! Ideas? Happy chappie

Hosed off Dear Ed, To the low-life who removed the garden hose and reel from outside the Menz Shed in the Bright Centre community centre, Dillons Pt Rd, let me tell you that we are a non profit charitable organisation that helps others in need. We have no guaranteed government or council funding, and have to apply to organisations for funding and or raise our own money through raffles and donations. We had to replace the hose and reel recently as the well-meaning PD workers ran over the old one with their lawn mower. SHAME ON YOU. If you have an ounce of decency, please return these items. Dave Oliver Menz Shed committee member

Money is the issue Dear Ed, I see yet another group is being formed to try and tackle the skill-labour shortage in Marlborough. Good on them, and I wish them well. However, none of the well-meaning groups who want to tackle this issue seem to want to talk about the elephant in the room – wages. Marlborough is, and has been for ages, a low wage economy with many young couples having to hold down two low-paying jobs to make modest ends meet. Sure, there are a few jobs that pay well, but if you talk to young workers around here you will find that many are on the minimum wage and $20 an hour is a common rate. Try paying a mortgage and supporting a family on that! The other big elephant is housing costs. The local developers are busy building four-bed two-bathroom $600,000 plus homes that are sold to retirees and out-of-towners, but that the average Blenheim wage earner will never afford. If you can’t earn a decent living and you can’t afford a house, you won’t be wanting to come to Marlborough. Worker Blenheim

New poems from pupils at Taylor River By Bill McElhinney Three new Taylor River Writers’ Walk poems, composed by pupils from Seddon, Fairhall and Rapaura Schools, were unveiled last week. The Taylor River Writers’ Walk

was initiated in 2010 by Springlands Primary School. A student’s poem about the river was engraved on a plaque and mounted on a riverside boulder. This was the beginning of the

Writers’ Walk, which has been added to each year since with poems from other Marlborough schools. The sixth and seventh poems were unveiled in 2015, an eighth

poem in December 2016 and a ninth poem in September 2017. The poems, all written by local school students, celebrate the importance of the Taylor River and help raise awareness of envi-

ronmental values. Funding for the walk comes from the Marlborough District Council and Monumental Mason Geoffrey T. Sowman, who donate and engrave the granite plaques.

Water Child of the mountains A braided mess Bringing joy and good times But also power and destruction You need me to survive however I could be your fate I am life Balanced Kept prisoner by these banks I am infinite with no destination

The mother of my enemy Polluted by my children I used to be uncatchable Until you came with your bottles I trust only the stones over which I flow Born from the clouds above and the springs below I am you I am them I am water Margot Taylor, 12, Rapaura School.

LEFT: Margot Taylor from Rapaura School with her poem, 'Water.' BELOW: Sienna Payne from Seddon School called her poem ‘Dear Taylor River.’

Dear Taylor River Meet us, We love to watch your glistening surface ripple And bubble in the warming sunshine. This sunshine warms not only our skin, but our hearts, As do you, Taylor River. You are full of life and beauty, And we respect you so... At least that is what we say.

The plastic floating through your bubbling depths Did not discard itself, We are a disgrace After all you have given us, This is how we repay you. We say we are sorry But we are not true to our words... As we are not actioning them We have been mindless and

heartless And inexcusably selfish. All we ask of you Is your forgiveness And we will dedicate to your renewal We will repair what we’ve done And we will bless you with new life. Sienna Payne, 12, Seddon School

The Seasons of the River The summer sun beams down on the river, Parching everything lightly. Water glittering like thousands of sapphires. Lush leaves start to change. A whirlwind of red, orange, gold, brown. The colours dance across the surface of the water. Stripped skeleton trees line the water like ghosts.

Grey clouds circle the river. In flood the Taylor River unleashes its fury on the land. Trees and plants start to flourish as a new growth appears, spring is coming. Song birds return, everything is renewed. This is the Taylor River. By Jack Frew, Amelia Storey & Emily Harper. Fairhall School

From petrol head to painter Pete Rickerby is determined to live life to the full, despite having Multiple Sclerosis. He tells Megan Connolly about a few of his adventures. Pete Rickerby has always been a bit of a rebel. From a young age he was a “petrol head,” riding motorbikes, racing them and repairing them. Later in life he became a scuba instructor, intrigued and fascinated with every aspect of underwater exploration, from teaching diving to the science behind it. But it is art and drawing that has been the biggest and most important part of his life. Art had been a passion since Pete was a child, but he was around nine years old when he really became invested in it. “Mum and dad decided that they needed to get rid of me once a week on Saturday, so I learned to draw from a lady called Jocelyn May. “She really taught me to love painting and drawing,” Pete says. Mostly he drew cartoons, characters and caricatures just to amuse his friends. “I mainly drew for my own entertainment, really,” Pete says. For a number of years he worked for The Herald as a cartoonist before he got a job as a printer. Just like art, the love of motorbikes started when he was young and carried on right through after he left school and into adulthood. Pete learned to ride on a Vespa 90 scooter when he was only 13 years old, sneaking into his sister’s room to steal the keys and take it for a ride around the Port Hills in Christchurch. “I was a little wild child for a while. Sorry mum and dad.” As a young man, around the mid 70’s, Pete eventually found himself mixing with other motorbike racers. “For a while I was the slowest guy around the track till I fell off and stopped being so scared. “After a few years I think I became a bit of a well-respected rider,” he says. Pete and his friends raced all over the country under the name of team TOAD (Totally Obnox-

ious and Always Drunk), and enjoyed the social aspect more than anything. “I always wanted to be different. When you turned up around 98 per cent of the riders were riding Yamaha’s. I was riding a Kawasaki.” Like most things in life, Pete found himself on another path not long after; getting an itch for a life underwater. He took scuba diving lessons in the hopes to one day use it to catch his own seafood. “I was the worst student I’d ever met.

“When you put your head underwater, your mind goes ‘you can’t breathe’. It’s all mental.

save my mind.” Pete eventually got to the stage where he fancied the idea of making it his job to become a dive master or assistant instructor, and worked as a one for several years, meeting his wife Suzzie in the process. They eventually moved to Marlborough for the diving. In 2011, Pete was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. “We were heading through Hokitika and my eyes weren’t working. “There was some discussion

about MS but the doctors originally thought it could be a brain tumour because they couldn’t figure out why my eyes were so bad.” Pete found out it was damage to his optical nerve that caused his vision to go and he became legally blind. But Pete powered on, selling his bikes and returning to his art as a form of solace. “Art has been my saviour.” Pete will have a piece of work, named ‘Dreamtime,’ showcased at The Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery in November.

So who will go first?

By Stuart Smith MP. In last week’s column, I wrote about other New Zealand centres which have made a very deliberate move to introduce, and embrace, central city living in a bid to breathe life back into languishing CBDs. These were all larger centres, and some people may be tempted to view these places as too different to Marlborough to compare. This is untrue. As I’ve pointed out previously, most of our towns and cities suffer from the

Stuart Smith MP.

“hollow egg” syndrome, where all residential living surrounds a core which, at the end of each working day, empties out completely. Keeping this core full around the clock by ways of a permanent population in CBD apartments and other accommodation, which would naturally support CBD businesses, is a logical way to stop this from happening. If we do want to look at an example closer to home, then we have to look no further than

Kaikoura, which is getting its own accommodation and apartment block in the centre of town as part of the post-earthquake rebuild. This development will ensure that Kaikoura’s town centre, small as it is, does not completely empty out once the tourists and workers leave for outlying accommodation, but leaves a small population base to support local business. Another example closer to home is Wellington, which suffers the least from “hollow

egg syndrome” of all our centres because it is constrained by geography. But even there, a new central city development of offices, shops and a performing arts campus on Cuba and Victoria Sts will include an apartment building above the planned precinct, specifically to rejuvenate that area with a permanent population base. All around us, towns and cities are creating opportunities to revitalise their empty CBDs by drawing people in, not taking

them out by only focusing on suburban residential developments. So, with all our empty first-storey CBD space, why aren’t we doing the same in Blenheim? Is it a case of changing traditional mindsets of how our town should be, not only for those residents, but also landlords and business owners? Our CBD will not fill itself, and it is clear that we need to take a different approach to what we have done in the past. So who will go first?

Lions raise cash for St Johns By Megan Connolly Blenheim Lions Club presented a cheque donation to St John Ambulance recently for $3500. The money will be used to purchase a new first responder kit which is completely comprehensive with all the gear needed for first on scene emergency

responders, spokesman for St John Rod Hill says. “Every time first responders use the kit, the medical supplies used are immediately replaced. Increasing the kits means we’re always better prepared. “It’s a tremendous gesture,” Rod says. The funds were raised

through the Blenheim Lions Club’s huge wood chopping and firewood project and from the parking at the St Clair Marathon, member of Blenheim Lions Club Willie Blom says. “It’s about keeping the money local,” secretary of the club, Mike Blom says.

Powerful paintings in Panaho exhibition

Cellist Elgee Leung plays to a packed gallery at the opening of Blenheim artist Andrew Panoho’s current exhibition at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery.

By Penny Wardle The paintings are powerful, in Andrew Panoho’s current exhibition at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery. Andrew’s belief in the love and redeeming power of God inspires his “Faith – The Window of Heaven is Open” exhibition. However, the paintings and drawings are accessible to everyone. Walk into the gallery and it appears to be bathed in translucent light shining from “Faith” which fills almost the entire back wall. First exhibited in London where Andrew had a studio in the 1990s, the painting asserts itself with a fire-like glow and resonant text from the Apostles’ Creed. This is among works on display after years of storage. Others were

painted in Andrew’s Blenheim studio, built in 2007. This includes a set of canvases exploring faith in a Marlborough context, enigmatic but open to individual interpretation. Andrew’s skill as an artist is evident in a number of skilfully executed portraits in pencil and watercolour where lines are lively rather than literal. What they capture is beyond mere figures, expressing for example the exhaustion of his wife Ana weeks away from giving birth. There are also painted self-portraits at various ages, from teenager through to confident but questioning adulthood. Recent works include expressionist representations of Pollard Park in Blenheim with a carnival colour

pallette and joyful beauty. These are perhaps the most accessible of the paintings, breathing life into a familiar Blenheim scene. Yet at a deeper level the artist explains, these paintings, too. are charged with symbolism. Art-lovers along with the creative Panoho family’s musical and church contacts packed the gallery for the exhibition’s Friday opening and a performance by cellist Elgee Leung. “Faith - The Window of Heaven is Open” at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery daily, 10.30am-4.30pm, closing November 4. The Panoho family will host a Sung Communion in the gallery on Sunday October 28 and November 4 at 2pm.

Hard work pays off Riders shine at Special Olympics ribbon day For the 16 people that took part in the Special Olympics Ribbon Day in Blenheim on Saturday, there was plenty to smile about. The equine event was hosted by the Marlborough Riding for the Disabled and featured riders aged nine-53 years of age. For some it was their first time competing and were clearly challenged in a positive way by the competition atmosphere. They put their skills to the test in front of family and friends looking smart in their riding attire, while the horses and ponies also had the opportunity to shine with painted hooves and plaited manes. Highlights of the competition were the special awards. The highest per-

centage in dressage went to Marlene Fergusson and Sundance, the 77.8 percent best match in dressage went to Zoe Tate and Banjo, the best match in trail went to Marlene Fergusson and Sundance, the highest percentage in working trail went to Karl Millan, and the rising star - newcomer to equestrian, was Jack Bugler. Fun in the sun with machinery The Marlborough Vintage Farm Machinery Society held their annual ‘Open Day’ on Sunday, and those who ventured out into the sunshine at Brayshaw Park thoroughly enjoyed the attractions that were on offer. Photos by Kathy Johnston.

“Ooooh, mind the toes…!” Gary Graham skillfully and carefully slices into the log with a very sharp axe.

Lisa Puklowski - for professional pool care advice! Lisa Puklowski has a passion for pools, so in 2016 she established ‘Nelson Pool Care’ and has teamed up with Antony Heyward at Nelson Para Rubber to provide a service which fixes people’s pool issues. “Antony sells the pools, liners, pumps & filters, etc and I install them,” says Lisa. “New liners and new pool installations are keeping me busy until Christmas, with a lot of the work coming through Para Rubber. If people have a specific pool problem, they can pop into Para on a Saturday morning, and I will be available to discuss how it can be sorted out.” Many locals will know Lisa from her time at Aquaflow where she worked for 15 years. “My father, John Puklowski, developed the business to what it was in 2009, when he died. I’ve grown up in this industry. I remember testing water when I was 14!” If I’m ever stuck, or a certain job needs an extra bit of working out, I often think ‘what would you do Dad?’ It’s been five

years since Lisa left there and she has now transferred all her knowledge and experience to ‘Nelson Pool Care’ and Para Rubber. “I’ve enjoyed training staff members at Para. We are able to fix any pool problem, for any type of pool, from small to large, vinyl liners through to concrete & fibreglass. Para definitely needs to be looked at if you are thinking of purchasing a pool. They look really good and they last the distance; I’m seeing a lot of older Para’s that are 30 plus years old, which only need a new liner and they’re as good as new!” Lisa loves a good challenge such as bringing a ‘pea soup pool’ back to being a beautiful, clear, sparkling pool again; the chemical side of things and getting the water balance right is where my passion is, and I enjoy making things as easy as possible for people, in a cost effective way.” For more information, visit www.nelsonpoolcare. co.nz or www.pararubber.co.nz Business Update. Have cockroaches? Act now Cockroaches - does the mere mention of these pesky critters make your skin crawl? They are extremely common in Marlborough, and more prevalent in some areas than others. All cockroaches are pests, and the biggest cockroach pests in New Zealand are the Amerian cockroach (Periplaneta americana) and the German cockroach (Blattella germanica). While they are only a low-level health risk, they do live in unhealthy environments and they can transmit a number of diseases like dysentery, salmonella and diarrhoea. They prefer damp, dark places and are often found inside walls, behind household appliances and in cupboards. Cockroaches thrive in warm and damp conditions and will dehydrate if the environment is too dry. However, they can survive in extreme conditions for short periods of time. Cockroaches can survive months without

food and up to four weeks without water. This makes them very difficult to get rid of. They can eat a range of foods, from faecal matter to fresh food intended for people to eat. If cockroaches contaminate your food or the surfaces you use, you could get sick. You can reduce your chances of a cockroach infestation by: Filling cracks in walls and foundations Keeping living areas dry and clean Disposing of rubbish Removing human waste and food waste from the home quickly and efficiently. If you already have cockroaches, you might need to set baited traps or apply an insecticide to the area. Insecticides work best when applied to areas where cockroaches hide during the day or where they pass through at night time. It is vital to keep your home clean and dry to stop you from getting cockroaches in the first place.

Summer provides ideal conditions for fleas

Pet owners aren’t the only ones that love their animals - fleas do too! These tiny little pests commonly lay dormant in the home in places such as the carpet and furniture. They awaken when these areas warm up, typically around summer. When they sense vibration nearby they jump on board and begin biting, which can cause irritation and sometimes bad allergic reactions. The flea species present in New Zealand are mostly a public health nuisance, but have the potential to be a public health risk due to their ability to transmit infectious diseases. To get rid of fleas follow these steps: Eliminate source: Treat your pets with flea control products available from your vet. These control adult fleas when they take a blood feed from the pet. However, eggs, larvae, pupae and adult fleas do not live on your pets, they live in carpet and bedding where pets sleep, so if possible give your pet’s bedding a hot wash to kill any remaining fleas, eggs, larvae and pupae. Stop: Spray a flea protection product in areas where pets sleep and around edges of carpets and other places fleas have been found. Then flea bomb to kill fleas and penetrate into

areas that cannot be treated directly. Follow the directions on the side of the fumigator. It will also flush the fleas out of hiding places so that they come in contact with sprayed surfaces. Keep room/s sealed for as long as possible, up to 24 hours. If the flea infestation has become established it may be necessary to repeat this treatment. Clean: Thoroughly vacuum all parts of the house where fleas have been found. Vacuuming removes the dust flea larvae feed on, flea pupae and eggs. Dispose of the vacuum bag immediately by sealing in a plastic bag and placing in bin outside. Proof: Spray again with the flea protection product a month after initial treatment.

New beach volleyball courts open By Celeste Alexander Marlborough Volleyball is getting set to celebrate the official opening of the new beach volleyball courts at Lansdowne Park, and invites the public to go along. The area where the Jim Fraser Centre once sat, is now home to the four courts which were put in by the Marlborough District Council to replace the previous two courts which were located nearby. Marlborough volleyball committee member Steve Beaumont says while the beach volleyball courts were completed and opened at the beginning of the year, they are now wanting to officially open it and launch a competition. The opening will be on Tuesday, November 6 at 6pm with an invite to the public to go along and try volleyball for themselves. People can then find out more about putting in teams or pairs for the up and coming competition, which runs November 6 to December 18. “The council has been great and provided us with four good

sized courts, so the idea is that we will have a net up at all times for people to go and play/practice. “We are also offering an opportunity for teams or pairs to compete in a Beach Volleyball competition, so if it sounds like you get in touch,” he says. Steve plays both indoor and beach volleyball and is part of the masters team ‘Marlborough Madness’ which regularly competes at South Island events, and at the Worlds Masters Games in Auckland last year. Promoting the sport throughout the community is game development officer for Marlborough Volleyball, Nicky Bain. She regularly visits local primary schools, organises junior competitions, senior leagues and basically “anything volleyball in Marlborough”. Her daughter Amy Bain, 16, also helps out with coaching as well as playing herself and refereeing. To enter a team into the Beach Volleyball Competition, contact Nicky on 022 120 0573, email volleyballmarlborough@ gmail.com, or call Kelly on 027 451 0226.

By Megan Connolly Local boys William Exton and Arthur Broughan travelled down to Invercargill for the South Island Kart Sprint Championships and returned with three out of the six titles to be won between them. The boys went down with their fathers Gareth Exton and Matthew Broughan recently for the two-day racing event. Fourteen-year-old William successfully defended his title of Yamaha Junior and Rotax Max Junior titles with great success, winning both. Nine-year-old Arthur went with the intention to build on his third place and came out with the impressive Junior Cadet Rok title. Both of the drivers excelled in the initial heats and finals and drove Arthur Broughan with dad Matt on the left and William Exton with dad Gareth at Invercargill for the superbly all weekend, a spokesperson South Island Sprint Kart Championships.
