By Celeste Alexander How do you like your strawberries? Freshly picked, dipped in chocolate or with some fresh cream? For Hannah Thomas and Clayton Morgan of Hedgerows, they can’t get enough of their hydroponic strawberries which are in season now. The recent cooler weather has been ideal conditions for the strawberries, and if the hot weather holds off a little longer their Christmas crop will be a good one, they say. Continued on Page 2. Clayton Morgan and Hannah Thomas of Hedgerows say the family business is already having a great season.

Hedgerows directors Hannah Thomas and Clayton Morgan have been busy since September selling their delicious hydroponic strawberries.

Continued from page 1. “Today it was 21 degrees which is ideal. Next week on we will start to see the white specs among the green leaves. These are super important as they are our Christmas fruit,” Clayton says. “We are crossing our fingers for this type of weather for the next couple of weeks,” Hannah adds. With next door’s strawberry farm, Jones Berry Fruits, now closed there will be more demand on Hedgerows. “The Jones have left a huge legacy, but we will try our best to provide for the community,” Hannah says. Already Christmas orders have been filled but don’t despair the couple says, because there will be plenty of strawberries before and after. “The fruit lasts about seven days in the fridge and we tend to have so much around the five days before Christmas, and a few days after, so there will be strawberries,” Clayton says. Hedgerows is very much a family run business since being taken over

by Clayton, Hannah and family members. They are into their third season this year and now gearing up for their busiest period. This year they put in around 75,000 plants. Around 50,000 of these go into the glasshouse and the rest into the polyhouse. These have different conditions with the polyhouse a little warmer and producing larger strawberries. “The fruit comes on a little later in the polyhouse but the berries are huge. These ones we tend to sell locally because they are too big to be packaged and sent out... they are definitely our favourite,” Hannah grins. The outside area by the shop has been updated and is a great space for families and kids to sit and enjoy fresh strawberries and icecream. Hedgerows also has a new cart in Blenheim’s CBD which has been a big hit with locals, Clayton says. “My father is also at the Farmers’ Market with our strawberries so if you haven’t tried any yet, make sure you do,” he says.

George wins National Spelling Bee Champs By Megan Connolly For Marlborough Boys’ College student George Turner, who won the National Spelling Bee 2018 Championship on Sunday, life will go back to normal. Despite his big win following some tough competition at the City Art Gallery in Wellington, “it’s all yet to sink in” George says. George takes away the Spelling Bee trophy and $5000 towards his academic pursuits,

in addition to holding the title. “It was tricky and a bit nerve-wracking being in front of everyone,” George says. It was the word ‘frankincense’ that won him the title, and when the word came up, George was relieved. “I knew it,” George says. To prepare for the big competition, the year 10 student was given a list of words to learn in preparation in the months leading up to the championships. His family couldn’t have

been more excited. When he arrived home with his dad, his family had made a sign and were waiting at the airport to congratulate him. George’s championship trophy is proudly displayed on top of his dresser next to last year’s runner-up trophy. “It’s pretty cool,” George says. And because the Spelling Bee is only offered to Years 9 and 10, George is finishing his spelling bee career as a national champion.

Marlborough Boys' College Year 10 student George Turner was named New Zealand Spelling Bee 2018 Champion in Wellington at the weekend, beating hundreds of other spellers. Photo provided.

Craft market this Friday The Beavertown Blenheim Lions are holding their Craft Market - featuring locally made craft this Friday from 9am - 5pm and Saturday 9am - 1pm at The Forum Market Place in Blenheim. There will be plants, clothing, raffles, garden ornaments, redrock hats, Christmas crafts, licorice and jewellery throughout the 16 stalls.

Warrior Women evening Warrior Women, a support and wellness group in Blenheim headed by Sarah McAlister, is hosting an evening this Friday from 6-7.30pm at Whitney Street School, looking at the importance of liking who we are. Door entry is by donation to the Motor Neurone Disease research and services.

Stephan Walliser and Pol Lenzinger in front of part of the incredible corkscrew collection at the Fromm Winery's new cellar door. Stephan is holding the first corkscrew to be granted a patent in 1795, and Pol has the first corkscrew to be patented in New Zealand in 1945.

Corks no challenge here! By Bill McElhinney You want to get at the wine, but the cork’s in the way. So you need a corkscrew, right? Right. So you should see Pol Lenzinger. Pol, a party owner of Fromm Winery in Marlborough, has close to 2000 corkscrews. “I started about 51 years ago,” Pol says. Pol, who is Swiss, wanted to brush up on his English, and was advised to go to Christie’s auctions when he was in London on business, as that would be a good place to expand his language skills.

“I was there one day when this beautiful corkscrew came up for auction, and I bought it,” Pol says. “I’d always been interested in wine, and most of the wine in Europe is closed with cork.” It was the beginning of a journey which fascinated Pol and led to him hunting down corkscrews in flea markets wherever he travelled. Last week Pol brought part of his collection, around 700 corkscrews, to be displayed at the newly expanded and renovated cellar door at Fromm. Included in the display are two unique items: the first corkscrew to be awarded a patent in England,

and the first corkscrew to be awarded a patent in New Zealand. The English corkscrew was patented by the Rev. Samuel Henshall in 1795. The New Zealand corkscrew, which was patented in 1945 by James Alexander Mason, took a bit of acquiring. “It belonged to a collector in Australia,” Pol says, “and it took a lot of convincing, and wine, to get him to part with it.” But Pol, who comes out to New Zealand every year for the Fromm wine harvest, eventually bought it and now it is on display amongst the hundreds of others at the cellar

door. “It’s extremely rare,” Pol says, “but it’s fairly flimsy and I would hesitate to use it.” That’s because you need some grunt to get a cork out of a bottle – around 30kg of pull if the cork is tight, Pol says. Fromm is an organic winery and most of their wine is under cork so you’re going to need a corkscrew, and their display certainly gives you a huge range of options. “It’s amazing to think that a simple tool like a corkscrew has sparked thousands of patents,” Pol says.

More teacher strike action Local primary schools have voted for strike action on Thursday, November 15 after the Ministry of Education made second offers to both primary teachers and principals, who voted to reject these offers.

Quilt art on show soon Cancer Society Marlborough update What ‘s New After eighteen years as our Centre Manager and Information and Support Nurse Margot Wilson is retiring this month we will all miss her and wish her well. Margot wishes to thank the Marlborough Community for their support.

By Bill McElhinney Marlborough Quilters members have been busy since their last exhibition three years ago. In that time Marlborough Quilters has held a mini symposium, which attracted quilters from all over New Zealand, and members have made over 400 quilts for children living on Marlborough’s East Coast Marlborough who were affected by the 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes. Members were busy recently sorting quilts for their 2018 exhibition, which is being held in

the Clubs of Marlborough from Friday through to Sunday. The exhibition has 11 categories where quilters express their passion for quilting in the genre of their choosing, from classical and traditional styles to fibre art and recycling and from miniature to king-size. The exhibition will showcase members’ creations over the past three years. “Bringing their art to the public gives their members an opportunity to show the community their art form, and encourages

like-minded people to be supported in learning their craft and enjoying the opportunity to view their exhibits,” one of the exhibition organisers, Liz Johnson, says. The exhibition includes 98 quilts made by members and 13 small quilts from the 2018 Club Challenge. “We are proud to have art quilts from Eleanor Cole and Clare Crosswell on display with the 2018 national travelling suitcase exhibit of Hoffman Challenge quilts,” Liz says. “They also celebrate local artist

Jean McLean’s success in the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, where she was awarded Best in Art Quilts.” Visitors to the exhibition can have a go at quilt making in the demonstration corner. Quilts made at the exhibition will be given to local charities. “Visitors can vote for their choice of the best quilt in the show,” Liz says. The quilt on the left in the picture here will be raffled, and tickets can be bought at the exhibition, Liz says.

Best pets on show

By Celeste Alexander Goats dressed in unicorn costumes, fluffy bunnies and lambs wearing bright pink collars were just a few of the animals that took part in the Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club group day event, held at Canvastown School last Friday. Students from Renwick, Linkwater, Canvastown, Tua Marina and Havelock Schools schools who won ribbons at their own school’s pets days, put their animals on show for the judges. It was a relaxing day out in the country for those who took part, families relaxed under the shady trees and the animals lazily grazed as they waited for their judging. For Sophie Laws of Renwick School, it was a good day for wins

with lamb Daisy winning first in ringcraft and best pet combined, as well as third in care and knowledge. It was her fifth group day event, but still one she enjoys. Hana Sluiter of Fairhall School took along her four Red Shaver chicks. The nine-week old chicks did not receive a prize but Hana enjoyed showing them off. Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club secretary Sarah White says the event was a great success with just over 100 children attending with their animals. “It was quite a good number considering we didn’t have any calves due to Mycoplasma bovis,” she says. Here are the major prize winners. Doyle Trophy-Laying Hens - Callum Rooney of Renwick School

Stop and pause There seem to be a number of car crashes at intersections occuring recently, caused by motorists not stopping at a stop sign. One I drove past recently on Old Renwick Road was a case of a motorist pulling out in front of oncoming traffic. How no one was killed in that 100km/h area I don’t know. But it could have been easily avoided. Why is this? Why could you not spare

a few seconds of your time to stop, look in all directions and make sure it’s safe to continue. It’s very simple! Stop, pause and look for oncoming vehicles. How many times do the Police need to reiterate this very simple road rule. The world is not going to end in the moments it takes to adhere to the road rules. Seriously fed up!

Hot dogs Dogs in hot cars! How stupid can you be? My husband and I witnessed a woman leaving her two fluffy coated, medium sized dogs in their car as they headed into the supermarket recently. It was 22 degrees outside and the car was not parked in the shade.

We waited 10 minutes to see if they were coming back out soon after, but alas no luck. So we left a nicely worded note under the windscreen, reminding them of the dangers of leaving dogs in hot cars. Please, please, please do not do this. Dog lovers

Harry: “Aren’t you worried about a brexit NZ”? PM: “All of the rural NZ Mainland didn’t vote for us. Under our flawed MMP system (thrown out overseas), we elected ourselves to govern! “Our media loves me, thankfully they portrayed our last PM as ‘boring’. “They also covered the last US election and camped up in Clinton’s headquarters awaiting her victory speech, clearly showing that, like our government, they haven’t a clue of what the people want.” Old School Blenheim

Tribute to WW1 horses By Bill McElhinney Shona Currie has always loved horses. “I never owned one of my own,” she says, “but when I was a girl I had friends at Ward who had ponies, and they let me ride. “I was fortunate to go on horseback mustering trips in Ward and South Canterbury. I loved it.” Shona’s love of horses has prompted her to write a special poem, a tribute to the horses that were ridden by soldiers in World War I. The poem is written so that when it is recited aloud, it has the cadence of a galloping horse. At 11am on Sunday a special service will be held at the War Memorial Clock Tower in Seymour Square to commemorating the signing of the Armistice, declaring an end to the hostilities and the start of the peace process, marking the end of World War 1. Armistice Day 2018 also marks the end of the 100 year commemorations. Here is Shona’s poem. A Horse’s View of World War I Plucked from the fields of verdant green From the calm and peace of a

rural scene Into battle on shores unknown For a cause to me no-one had shown First with my master on ship I boarded Frightened, unsteady, our hooves had to brace Against alien forces which caused us to toss Nostrils flared, ears flat, our terror revealed Together we suffered and thought of our field After what seemed eternity, all together ship-bound We arrived in a camp – at last on firm ground Our masters were there and tended us daily With water and food and what we all needed They showed us the love that we gratefully heeded But what was to come we could not even guess How foes a mere horse know the world’s in a mess Far away in that alien place, we were ridden At a furious pace we thousands were bidden Hell on earth broke around us, we did not understand Overtaken by terror we galloped on forth Urged on amongst gunfire for

all we were worth Blinded by smoke and the screams of the shells Like devils possessed we shrieked to each other But no-one was listening – not even horse brother Men and horses were around us in heaps We tried to avoid them with terrible leaps Through death and destruction this deadly game wended I could only but wonder if this could be ended I remember the kindness and

MND cuts short a rich life Gerard and Glennis Neilson spent 30 years travelling the world together with Gerard’s job. Then motor neurone disease hit, and within a short time Gerard’s active life ended, Glennis tells Bill McElhinney. “Gerard was such an active person,” Glennis says with a smile. “He rowed, was a squash player, he walked, he swam. He was fit and active.” Blenheim-born Gerard went to university and became a road safety engineer, a job that eventually took the couple all around the world. Gerard managed projects all over the world for organisations such as the World Bank, the Asia Development Bank, and AusAID, the agency responsible for managing Australia’s overseas aid programme. The couple worked and lived in Bahrain, India, Uganda, Ghana and a host of other countries. “My job was to set up house, which I could do within a week,” Glennis says. “Then I would get involved with the local community, working with street kids, helping local women’s organisations.” In 2015 Gerard and Glennis decided it was time to come back home to New Zealand to semi-retire. “We were in Jakarta before we returned,” Glennis says. “We decided to have a week in Bali before we left, and it was there I noticed Gerard had a bit of a limp. He didn’t have any pain, but I thought, ‘no one limps without a reason’. It just didn’t seem right. “And then he took the grandkids snorkelling, and he had to get out of the water because he was cold.” When the couple eventually arrived back in New Zealand, Glennis urged Gerard to see a doctor about his limp.

After a number of tests, the reason for the limp was discovered — and the news was shattering. Gerard was experiencing the first signs of Motor Neurone Disease, or MND. Motor neurone disease is the name of a group of diseases that destroy the nerve cells (neurones) that control your muscles. With no nerves to activate them, the muscles you use to walk, talk, hug, hold, speak, and eat gradually stop working. Eventually, you’re locked in a body that can no longer move. “When he was first diagnosed, Gerard asked the doctors to give him a worst-case scenario,” Glennis says. “They said the worst outcome would see him in a wheelchair a year later. And that’s exactly what’s happened. “We moved to Wellington and built a house to accommodate Gerard – wider halls and doorway, a wet floor bathroom. “We thought the progression of the disease would be slow, but it wasn’t,” Glennis says. “I nursed him as much as I could manage, and we had incredible help from the people in the health system. “We were also grateful that Gerard remained alert throughout. Apparently it’s not uncommon to get a form a dementia with MND, but this didn’t happen. “Eating eventually became a problem, as Gerard found it more and more difficult to swallow, but he loved flavours, he loved his curries, so I made them and just blitzed them up so he could eat them.

Glennis Neilson's family made a photo book of her late husband, Gerard, who died of motor neurone disease.

“Eventually he had to go on a breathing machine and he would suffer involuntary twinges and spasms as his muscles flexed.

‘We were both determined to suck it up and make the best of the situation’ “Gerard was pleased it progressed quickly – he didn’t want it to drag on. “We were both determined to suck it

up and make the best of the situation. “We’d had 30 years of happy marriage, raised five healthy children, and have nine grandchildren, all of whom we saw often. “It was never as bad as I thought it might be,” Glennis says, “and I never felt I couldn’t cope, and we had so much support from health professional, friends and family.” Fourteen months after being diagnosed with MND, Gerard passed away peacefully at home in January, 2017, aged 69. Glennis moved to Blenheim as has become involved with the MND support team. She is hoping the public will support the Walk 2 D’Feet MND in Blenheim on Sunday, an event to raise money

for research into the disease. The walk, which is suitable for all ages, starts at the Taylor River Reserve, Beaver Road entrance, with registration from 9am and the walk starting at 10am. Walk goes along on the concrete path on the eastern side of Taylor River to the footbridge that goes across towards Brook Street and back down the western side of the river to loop back to the start. Registration is $10 for individuals, $20 for a family. There will also be a coffee cart, sausage sizzle and some music. “This disease can affect anyone at any time,” Glennis says, “so please come and help us to raise awareness and funding for this very worthwhile cause.”

The Marlborough A&P Show November 9th & 10th, 2018

Country comes to town By Megan Connolly The countdown has begun for this year’s Marlborough A&P Show which takes place this Friday and Saturday. This hugely popular event will be held at the Marlborough A&P Showgrounds and promises entertainment for the whole family. This year will feature a wide range of animals to see and cuddle at the animal nursery, as well as the many animals throughout the different sections that will be competing, from late morning on Friday and starting again at 10am on Saturday. The animal nursery will have goats, miniature cattle, donkeys and young lambs. Plus a new breed not showed in Marlborough before that comes from the Swiss mountains named Valais Blacknose will be on show, organiser Chris Bowron says. If you’re a pet sheep lover there will

be several class competitions to watch where judges will look at grooming, how clean their fleece is and how well they will take the bottle. “There will also be a class for the Best Fancy Dressed Pet which is open for fun and creativity,” Chris says. Plenty of food will be available and entertainment for everyone, and something for every member of the family. “It’s a great opportunity for town people to see what happens on farms and get an up-close look at all the stock and talk to owners,” Chris says. Along with lots of fun activities for the youngsters, there will be dog trials on both days, equine displays, vehicles on show, tractors and other industries. “There’s always something for everyone,” Chris says. Entry is $15 per person or $30 for a family (2 adults, 3 children). Children under 5, are free, students (5-18yrs) A new breed not showed in Marlborough before, the Valais Blacknose, will be at the Marlborough A&P Show. are $5 and public parking is $5.

The Tamarind

A delicious medley of light, fresh flavours from South India that will keep you craving! Gluten free | Dairy free | Sugar free

Open Tuesday to Friday Lunch 11.30am - 2pm Tuesday to Sunday Dinner 5.30pm - 10pm 14 Scott Street Blenheim

03 972 2903

If you think you like Indian food, prepare to fall in love with an authentic experience that takes you through South India’s ‘Land of Spices’. The Tamarind restaurant, Blenheim’s best kept secret when it comes to Indian cuisine, is located on Scott Street and specialises only in South Indian, truly authentic food. There are no additives to sweeten the dishes, and chefs use coconut water as the base instead of creams. This is something that owners Denny and Priyanka Yeldo are hugely proud of. “Our food is free of dairy, gluten and added sugars... making them healthy. We have taken traditional, authentic dishes from our home state of Kerala, and have not altered the taste. “This is what makes us so unique, we are the only Indian restaurant in Marlborough to offer this style of Indian cuisine,” Denny says. Denny and Priyanka opened their restaurant nine months ago and have enjoyed a regular following of customers. “Our customers are always giving positive feedback. They encourage us to keep the dishes truly authentic because they enjoy that difference,” Denny says. The business came about after Denny set up a home kitchen in 2016. He and his wife are registered nurses, so on his day off he would cook a range of dishes to work out which the public would like. “That’s where I established my customer

base. It’s been wonderful,” he says. He then took the leap and opened the restaurant and says it’s a decision he’s hugely proud of. “I can truly say that we create 100 percent authentic South Indian dishes. There are no twists or fusions, the whole menu is how you would taste it in Kerala,” he says. Because South Indian food originates from a coastal area, it’s common to use coconut water in the dishes rather than dairy as well as seafood. “This is what makes us one of a kind in Blenheim. Different spices, flavours and ingredients. If you haven’t tried our food, we invite you to,” Denny says. Asked what were some of the more popular dishes, Denny says the Dosa is one of the favourites with diners. “Because we use a lot of rice in our dishes, the Dosa is a light pancake made using fermented rice and lentils batter served hot. There are several options for fillings,” he says. “Our starters are also very popular, including the ones with mussels and prawns and in our mains, our pork and duck dishes. We are the only Indian restaurant serving pork and duck,” he adds. Enjoy lunch and dinner inside the restaurant, or dine outside in the sunshine. There are lunchtime combo options also available. For small groups of up to 17 people, a separate seating area can be booked, and larger groups can be booked for the main area.

Croquet players can have a ball By Bill McElhinney The gentle clack of croquet balls and pleasant conversation drift around Whitehead Park in Brooklyn Drive, as Blenheim Croquet club members enjoy another afternoon together. “Golf croquet, which is what we mostly play, can involve two or four or six players,” club member John Campbell explains. “The object of the game is to hit your ball(s) through the course of six hoops in the right sequence in each direction. Each player, or team of players has different coloured balls. The side which completes the course first with their balls wins.” Sounds pretty straightforward, but as with most games, there is a fair amount of skill, and some tactics, required.

It’s not too strenuous. Players walk between 1.5 and 2 kilometres in playing four games, and you don’t have to bend much, which is helpful for those with ailing joints. “Anyone can play,” club member Jeff Sawyer says. “We have players ranging in age from 60 to 90. And it’s affordable. You just need flat soled shoes and a smile!” The mallets which the players use to hit the composite plastic balls range in size, weight and cost. The idea is to pick one that suits your individual strength and size. Prices range from around $150 to as much as $500 and many popular mallets are made in Nelson by Michael McClure of Terminator Mallets. “The secret is to find the mallet that suits you, then

when you hit the ball, swing the mallet like a pendulum and let the mallet do the work,” Jeff says. The club, which has about 50 members, started in 1991, and meets on Tuesday, Thursdays

and Saturdays for social games. Each game takes about half an hour and most members play four games per day. “We’re a social group,” Jeff says. “It’s a great way

to meet other people and most of our members have come here as the result of meeting other members and being invited along. We’re happy for anyone to come along and have a go!”

John Derry takes another NZ title By Celeste Alexander Imagine racing at speeds up to 140 mile an hour in only centremetres of water. Jet boat racing isn’t for the faint of heart and is very much a champion sport, as proven by local man John Derry. John, a seven times New Zealand champion and two times world champion has raced into the top spot once again, after winning the ITM NZ Jet Boat Marathon that finished last Saturday. north of Christchurch and finished on the Waimakariri River. John Derry and Nick Smith proved once again that they had the winning edge in one of the most challenging action packed sports around. John and Nick from U36 took out the NZ1 title in a close match with runner up Mike Pooley and Nick McMillan, who at times, came very close to snatching the points away. Winning the NZ3 title was Shaun Kelly and Joseph Kelly.
